After an excellent pitching duel Friday night that saw the Reds (14-12) lose on a Marcus Semien home run late in the game, the Reds are back at it this afternoon against the Texas Rangers (14-13) and old friend Michael Lorenzen. It will be Lorenzen’s first career appearance against his former team.

First pitch is at 4:05 EDT. (Note: this game will be televised on the FOX national broadcast, not Bally Sports Ohio).

Hunter Greene

Hunter Greene is still working on pitching deeper into games, and his last start was another step in the right direction. He’s gone 6+ in three of the six games he’s started, including seven innings against the Phillies this past week. In 2023, he pitched just two innings in innings 7-9, so he’s already halfway to besting that mark. Today will be Greene’s second road start of the season. He pitched well in Seattle, only allowing one run on four hits with eight strikeouts, but it also was his shortest start thus far in 2024.

Michael Lorenzen

After a long free agent stint this off-season, Michael Lorenzen signed a one-year deal with the Rangers on March 22. He made three starts at Triple-A Round Rock before being added to the 26-man roster when Cody Bradford went down with a back injury. Lorenzen was officially on the IL with a neck strain, but really he just needed to ramp up to being able to pitch at a starter’s level. Lorenzen has made two starts since being activated. He pitched 5.0 and 6.0 innings in each of those starts, so his endurance level seems to be just fine. However, in those 11 innings, he has walked eight. The Reds might want to be patient at the plate today.

Love Mikey Biceps, but really hope he tanks big time today. We need a win via a whole lotta baserunners (hits and otherwise).

Not on Fox in my area, but the feed has it, so I’m good. Wonder who will be in the booth for them today.

About 30 minutes left until we KICK THIS PIG!!!

  2. Mauired

I understand the pickings are slim for leadoff with Friedl and McLain out, but Benson looks very out of place in the top spots of the lineup. I think that has alot to do with his slow start. Some guys just aren’t built for it and don’t do well at the top of the order.A better alternative maybe the Fraley/Fairchild platoon until Friedl returns.

Yeah Benson is an on base guy with speed, but that’s ignoring other big parts of his game. I think when most fans clamored for him to be taken out of the nine hole, people were envisioning a move to the middle of the order like 4-6. Last year he was just nine points behind McLain in leading the Reds regulars in slugging. It probably surprises alot of people that the 6’5” slugger, slow start and all (plus getting benched a couple times a week) is second on the team in extra base hits. Yeah, more than the hit machine Steer.

The guy he has been benched for multiple times has 1 extra base hit but I’m not even going to get into those shenanigans. Just hopeful to see Benson in a more fitting 5 or 6 spot in the lineup soon to get him comfortable and producing like he should.

    • Hanawi

He has a sub .300 OBP and is in the top 10 in MLB in strikeouts. He’s not an everyday player, much less one that should be getting the most at bats in any given game. Batting him in the lower 3rd is more appropriate.

      • Mauired

so you want to bat him lower than Martini (.222), Candelario (.275), CES (.212), Espinal (.270), Maile (.250), Fairchild (.283)

Alot of Reds are struggling to get on base so far. Do they all get benched?

      • Hanawi

I certainly wouldn’t bat him first since he can’t get on base. And at this point, he’s a rally killer with the Ks.

      • Mauired

Yeah he’s defitnitly looked out of sorts there. Alot like when Bell put Elly into the leadoff spot last year. He tanked there as well.

  3. Dennis Westrick

Five games into this 32-game gauntlet that started with the Phillies and ends on May 26th against the Dodgers, the Reds are 2-3! Need to get back on the winning track today and that starts with another strong outing by Hunter Greene!

Let’s beat up on Mikey Biceps, the ex-Red! Limit the strikeouts and get some timely hits with RISP!

  4. Mark Moore

Let’s see how India is feeling after he’s kicked the bug and is back at 2nd.

Got to be patient with Mikey Biceps. We all know control can be an issue.

    • Mauired

Is Lorenzon a better swingman for 4.5 mil than Martinez at 14 mil?

      • Mark Moore

I was thinking he was on Krall’s radar. Of course, we have no idea about any discussions that happened and what, if anything, was offered. All we know for certain is Mikey was waiting a long time to sign a deal.

    • Mark Moore

Are we really gonna make Mikey look like Cy Young today? 😮 😐

  5. RedsGettingBetter

Lorenzen just throwing 94-95 MPH fastballs in the mid-zone to retire 1-2-3 the Reds first inning, easily

    • Mark Moore

Steer at least got some wood on it.

  6. Roger Garrett

Reds aren’t ready or so it appears.First two fan and a ground out is just way way too easy.

  7. Mark Moore

Looking forward to seeing Espinal at 3rd today.

  8. Tom Mitsoff

Nice to see an 11-pitch inning for Greene!

    • Mark Moore

Wondering if he can duplicate that in the 2nd inning (or at least come close).

  9. Tom Reeves

I think the Reds messed up not keeping Lorenzen around.

  10. Mark Moore

It’s early, but the Fox guys aren’t impressing me so far. Nothing terrible like I’ve seen on other platforms (like Apple), but kind of “meh” so far. I’ll hang in there a bit before switching to the WLW feed (which I hope is in sync like it has been).

  11. Mark Moore

    That’s the Mikey we remember.

  12. Tom Mitsoff

Let’s get some runs and run up Lorenzen’s pitch count big time!

  13. Mauired

Bases loaded no outs. This could be the biggest opportunity of the game. please no dp india

  14. Mark Moore

Attaboy RoY!! Station to station works.

    • Mark Moore

And Martini gets it done as well. AJ calling it “good baseball” … I’d have to agree.

  15. Roger Garrett

Who knows what may happen this season but so far the Reds pitching overall has been very good. The rotation has depth in the minors that can be plugged in to start or relieve.Suter,Pagan and Martinez make the pen better and can go multiple innings so i like what I see so far.Offense will come around at some point and catch up with the pitching and the defense is improving.Young team with a lot to like going forward that will require all of us to be more patient this season.Baby steps for this team for sure.

  16. Mauired

Espinal with the dp rally killer. Still not very impressed even with his 3 day hitting streak.

  17. Old-school

    Nice second inning

See if greene can pitch with a lead

He usually doesnt get that fortune

  18. Mark Moore

CES at 1st is definitely growing on me. He seems committed do hustling and making the smart plays.

    • Mauired

He’s been great there. He just starting playing the position last year. Big cat out there.

    • Tom Mitsoff

Agreed. He’s much better than expected. Wish he would start hitting.

      • Mauired

Needs to learn to walk so he can hit.

      • Tom Reeves

He’ll hit. He’s hit at every level. The league has adjusted to him and he looks like he’s working on his adjustments. It will turn around.

  19. Mark Moore

Nice 2nd for Greene. Probably helped out by the Chumpire a bit, but we’ll take that when it goes our way, right?

  20. Mauired

oh wow. put the game on. not an interview

  21. Mark Moore

Note … Benson did NOT whiff that AB. Small steps … 😛

  22. Mark Moore

I don’t know about the rest of you, but a little bit of this split screen interview goes a long way for me. I want to watch game action.

Of course, “action” didn’t exactly describe those AB’s.

    • Mauired

defitnitley didn’t enjoy the constant switching away from game for interviews.

  23. Tom Mitsoff

Max Scherzer’s eyes are completely different colors.

    • Mauired

Interview went south went Max said he does not want electronic strike zone in MLB. Couldn’t disagree more. Umps miss several crucial calls on both sides many times per game and decide outcomes of too many games.

  24. Mark Moore

Scherzer is “pro umpire” and anti robo-zone. Yet he wants more accountability. I think the “human element” given the pace of the game is a red herring.

    • Old-school

His point was most umpires are good but a few are bad and need to be dealt with. Not unreasonable first step.

Greene 42 pitches in 3 innings. Progress. Nice outing so far.

      • Mark Moore

I tend to agree. There seems to be a complete lack of accountability for the “worst offenders”.

      • Mauired

I don’t blame umps for making so many bad calls. I would too. It’s not possible for a human to catch all these breaking balls and 100mph pitchs in an imaginary box. My vote is we help them with abs just like replay system. good for baseball.

  25. Mark Moore

So are we done with the interviews now? Please … pretty please …

    • Mark Moore

And that’ s not something switching the audio feed will fix 😐

  26. Tom Mitsoff

Despite CES’s infield hit, he showed the pattern that has been very evident in recent weeks. The pitcher gets to two strikes on him, then throws a slider low and out of the zone and CES strikes out. This time he got the tip of the bat on it, but the pattern was there again. If I can see it, so can the opposing teams.

    • Mark Moore

It’s almost like a “formula” at this point.

  27. Mark Moore

Attaboy RoY!!! Take advantage of what he’s giving you.

    • Tom Reeves

I think India needs regular rest. He tends to do well when he’s coming off a day or two off.

  28. Mauired

Like the drink, Martini is very nice once a week. Not everyday.

  29. Indy Red Man

Can HG run with this? We rarely score for him

  30. Mark Moore

Did Frankie to a counseling session with Hunter about pounding the zone and pitch efficiency? He just looks different today. And I like it.

    • Tom Mitsoff

If it were that simple, it probably would and should have happened long ago. I think that for some reason, he was just in a good groove today. I hope he memorizes the feeling.

  31. Mauired

Not perfect anymore but I’ll take 4 no hit innings.

  32. Mark Moore

And a Wil Benson sighting. Time for some Elly magic.

      • Mauired

Weird. Wonder how close that was to a pitch clock violation?

  33. Jonathan Linn

Hunter is going great and painting the edges of the strike zone. How come there are not enough comments giving him comments? It seems the comments only come out to criticize IMO. Just remember he is 24 years old with a ton of upside.

    • Mark Moore

Well, the comment pool is a little low today for whatever reason.

Hunter is definitely hitting the targets. He looks “different” today and I for one like it. This isn’t a team that will role over, so that ups this performance for me by HG.

      • Mauired

Had to stop and do editing. Was no hitting the champs and many of the Greene haters are mia. Zero dark 30

  34. Mark Moore

It’s almost time to cook those Wagyu burgers. I need to make a trip upstairs and get a beer out of that fridge.

  35. Indy Red Man

Cmon Will? Not worried about his bat, but we need to stop with these dumb outs

    • Indy Red Man

And quit calling African-Americans “well spoken”. It was racist 25 years ago

      • JB

And you don’t think African American isn’t racist? They are black Americans just like we are white Americans. Calli g them African is an insult since they aren’t from Africa. Should everyone call me Irish American?

  36. Mark Moore

Shake that one off and go after the hitters. You’ve still got this, Hunter.

  37. Jonathan Linn

Its like commenters are mad he was on SI or whatever….or mad that he was hyped up. Commenters really are not evaluating him with a good perspective. Plenty of pitchers relay on two pitches…

    • Indy Red Man

Starters? No. Many have 1-2 dominant pitches, but you a minimum of 3. Nolan Ryan had a circle change and he was throwing 98 when the league threw 89

  38. Old-school

Steer in LF, Elly at SS, CES at 1b look good on defense.

Hunter 5 superb shutout innings on 75 pitches

    Elly great play

  39. Old-school

Steer in LF, Elly at SS, CES at 1b look good on defense.

Hunter 5 superb shutout innings on 75 pitches

    Elly great play

  40. Mark Moore

Elly saves the shut out (for now).

  41. Mark Moore

My First Wife just asked if Elly has any brothers? 😮

    • Mauired

He’s really starting to look good at short.

      • Tom Mitsoff

Absolutely. I was critical of him earlier in the year, but he’s been lights-out for the past few weeks. Couldn’t ask for any more.

      • Mauired

I was starting to think Center was his future.

      • Mark Moore

He’s looking very good to me. And I’m one who wanted him bat at 3rd with MattyMc at SS. Now I think we ride this as far as we can.

      • Melvin

“Now I think we ride this as far as we can.”

Good thing he’s playing well there. We got no choice this year.

    • BK

Another example of why he’s more valuable at SS than CF 🙂

      • Melvin

He can be a superstar at SS. He can be All World in CF. 😉 No complaining from me. I’ll stake superstar. 🙂

  42. Mark Moore

I’m actually enjoying the AJ and Former President Bush banter and the pictures.

    • Mark Moore

And the banter about who is doing City Connect uniforms. All fine as long as you don’t keep switching from game play (or keep it on split for what seems like an eternity).

    • Mauired

the replay of him catching Nathans 300 save was hilarious. Ball that was called a game ending strike almost hit the dirt. yeah no electronic strikezone needed.

  43. Indy Red Man

Again not hitting the ball even remotely hard

  44. Old-school

Nice outing for Lorenzen. Good baseball Game.
See if Greene can keep dealing and get through the order 3rd time. Hes done really well through 5.

    • Mark Moore

He’s got a shot at going 7 innings at this pace. It’s all on him to make that happen (pitch count wise).

  45. Mark Moore

Roof only open 3 times EVER??? First Wife says they probably lost the key.

  46. Mark Moore

“Seager’s birthday but Hunter Greene’s the one celebrating so far.”

May be the comment of the day from the booth. These guys are growing on me.

  47. Old-school

Greene competing in the zone. Strong 6th inning.

  48. Mark Moore

Right on the meat of his throwing hand!! OUCH!! 😮

      • Mark Moore

AJ was saying one like that broke his hand.

  49. Mark Moore

Oppo shot from India! Way to go with what Mikey offered up.

    • Mark Moore

TySteve can now go ice his hand.

      • Mauired

Yeah that’s why India is such a good teammate.

  50. Melvin

India!!! Just when we were leaving him for dead. 🙂

    • Mauired

Best he’s looked in since May 2023. Reds offense really needs him back.

  51. DK in Erie PA

I’m taking credit for Indias performance
CES could be the worst player in baseball (lol)

    • Mark Moore

As long as he performs like this, you can take whatever credit suits you.

  52. Mauired

I’ve always like India in more run producing spots than leadoff. He has 4 of the 5 rbi today

    • Indy Red Man

He was horrible at cleanup though. Very low bringing in the man from 3rd with less then 2 outs

  53. Old-school

India and Benson play add-on and make this a laugher. Both needed that.

    • Mauired

Yeah if those two get going, Reds going to win some ballgames.

  54. Indy Red Man

Wow. I never worried about Benson’s talent although maybe lower in the order might work. India has the eye at the plate if his legs are healthy. Pretty promising game, but wait til tomorrow

  55. Tom Diesman

Benson with 100+ EV his last 3 PA That’s a great sign.

    • CI3J

Hope he’s finally coming out of his slump. He was on fire to start the season, then suddenly went ice cold.

We saw last year he’s a very talented player, but he’s also still young so there will be ups and downs. It’s nice that Bell recognizes that he is an everyday player, though.

  56. Mauired

Greene best start of the year without his personal catcher. I’m glad thats over.

  57. Tom Mitsoff

I hope Stephenson isn’t seriously hurt. I couldn’t imagine he’d be able to grip and throw a ball after that Lorenzen pitch hit him squarely on the right wrist.

    • Jeremiah

That looked painful…yeah I worry this could be something that keeps him out for a bit, hopefully not.

  58. Old-school

Greene dominant 7 innings. Great job, Great bounceback game from the Redlegs. The vultures were circling and some guys who needed to answer the bell have done that and then some. Good ball game.

  59. Mauired

HG seven innings 1 hit ball against the champs.

If it was Lodolo or Ashcraft there would be 20 commentators talking hall of fame. But with Greene it’s mostly crickets when anything good happens.

  60. Mauired

Yeah he needs a 3rd pitch to take it to another level. But Reds fans should be thrilled to have a 24 year with that arm making 3 million bucks same as the backup catcher instead of jumping all over him for any non cy young type of start.

    • ILL BILL

The problem is that he has 2 pitches. He will have games that he’s untouchable but it’s not sustainable. It’s been the same thing as last year. If he pushes the splitter and curve more and gets comfortable with one then the sky is the limit. Until he does that it’ll be the same old thing…. One or 2 games that he’s untouchable and one or 2 that he’s at 100 pitches in 4 innings. He’s very inexperienced for it being his 3rd year in the majors. Probably should have kept him down till he developed that 3rd pitch. If he ends up a closer it’s because he got pushed too early to the majors too early. There was the Covid year and a year from Tommy John. He’s been mishandled imo.

  61. Tom Diesman

Awesome start by Greene. I believe he did it throwing just the FB and Slider. I didn’t notice one Splitter or Curve. Anyone else see one of the third pitches today.

    • Mauired

Unfortunatley no but when those two pitchs are working just go with it I guess.

    • CI3J

If he threw anything besides a fastball and slider, I missed it.

While it’s great it worked out for him today, I really hate that this sends a message to him that he can get by with just two pitches. Despite today’s result, he still needs a 3rd pitch if he ever wants to be consistently successful.

  62. Roger Garrett

Worth noting is the Reds after the first two hitters struck out have only done it one more time.Need that to continue.

  63. Mark Moore

Game like this … especially Greene … Wagyu burgers and beer … it’s not April 25th, but this is pretty close to a perfect date.

    Finish ’em off, Brett!

    • Mauired

Just a quibble but almost wished they save Suter and have Farmer finish the game.

  64. Roger Garrett

Martini with 2 sac flies today.Fundamental baseball at its best.

  65. Mauired

Greene top 3 in NL in K’s and top 25 in NL in ERA. If that’s meaningful in any way.

  66. Jeremiah

Suter seems to be a very valuable reliever. He can pitch in big moments, and then he can pitch in 8-0 games a couple innings and you usually don’t have to worry about him giving up 3-4 runs, then having to start bringing in the other regular guys. I didn’t realize this much till last year, but just having guys that can eat up innings throughout the course of the year is pretty important as it saves the rest of the pen for the bigger moments

    • Harry Stoner

Usually you don’t have to worry about that.

      Sometimes, I guess, you do.

This is one for everyone to forget and focus on India and Greene’s performances.

  67. Old-school

    How valuable is Brent Suter?

Comes in an 8-0 game and willing to finish this game so bullpen is saved. Team guy with no ego

  68. CI3J

I really don’t remember Benson chasing so many low balls before. He used to have an exceptional batter’s eye.

It really seems like he’s pressing and has expanded his strike zone as a result. Hopefully he can remember how to sit back and let the game come to him instead of trying to force something to happen.

  69. Tom Reeves

Elly looks tired. He looked a bit tired last night too.

    • Jeremiah

He rarely gets a day off, they need to try get him one occasionally

      • Tom Reeves

One of the reasons Eric Davis performed better under Pete Rose is that Pete knew Eric couldn’t play every day. Elly probably should have a day off regularly.

    • Mark Moore

I was thinking the same thing. Wonder if we see Espinal at SS tomorrow. Of course, that comes with other complications.

  70. Mauired

Reds might steal the road series with Abbott pitching tommorrow

    • Mark Moore

We can hope that’s the case. Bats still need to back him. Hoping Jobu isn’t catching a morning flight and misses the game.

  71. Jeremiah

Hunter Greene and De La Cruz are somewhat similar talent wise, with their effect on a team… When they’re just average, they’re good, when they’re below average, they’re still valuable enough to be on your team, when they’re above average ,they’re superstars.

    • Mauired

Sounds like two guys to build a team around.

  72. Jeremiah

Maybe I spoke to soon about Suter! Keep him in there though he can finish it!

  73. Dennis Westrick

Good grief, Suter! Finish it already!

  74. Eddiek957

Five straight hits two homers three lefty hitters. Put a fork in him Dave

  75. Harry Stoner

    Did Bell just wake up?

    We’ve seen this happen before.

    • Dennis Westrick

Classic Bell! Always one batter too late! Baseball is a thinking man’s game for which Bell is not suited!

  76. Mark Moore

What did you guys do??? I break to finish cooking my burgers and then eat them and THIS is what I get?

Suter doesn’t have it tonight. And I get Bell was trying to ride him to the end, but getting Diaz up is necessary to staunch the bleeding. He needs to deliver, though.

    • Harry Stoner

      He delivered.

      Classic Diaz.

What was going on with Suter?

      • Mark Moore

His control was a bit off mostly, but they also bled more than a couple hits to compound matters. it could have been a LOT worse.

      • Harry Stoner

The two home runs didn’t actually help.

If Diaz had stuck with Reds’ tradition and walked the first batter, the tying run would have been at the plate with one out.

Yeah, that was way closer than it needed to be.

Now back to feeling good about Greene, India and Benson.

  77. Mark Moore

Hairy game shaved bald and we post the W. Nice last play by Elly there (again).

Tomorrow’s line-up will be interesting to see.

  78. Melvin

Little shaky but we’ll take the win. 🙂

  79. Mauired

I said Farmer should have come in lol. A win anyways. Notable that Diaz had to pitch but it was a short outing.

  80. Roger Garrett

One of those games I guess but its a win and that’s all that mattered.Greene was masterful and we go for the series win tomorrow.

    • Mark Moore

Greene twirled a gem for 7 strong innings. Can’t ask much more than that.

  81. Dennis Westrick

Despite the unnecessary drama in the bottom of the 9th, nice bounceback win by our Reds! Let’s not forget, the Rangers are defending WS champs1

    • Mark Moore

+5,000 and they are managed by “top men” … 😛

    • Mauired

Reds are still outscoring Rangers 9-5 this series and have the advantage on the pitching hill tommorrow.
