Nick Martinez

After spending the last three weeks in the bullpen after making two starts to begin the year, Nick Martinez is back in the rotation for the time being.

This season the splits for Martinez aren’t much at all. But last season he was much better against right-handed hitters, holding them to a .603 OPS while left-handed hitters had a .747 OPS against him.

Zack Wheeler

When he faced the Reds on April 3rd he picked up 10 strikeouts and allowed just one earned run, but Cincinnati got two other earned runs in a 4-1 win.

This season Wheeler has been quite good against lefties, holding them to a .672 OPS. But he’s been downright dominant against right-handed hitters. They have just a .360 OPS against him. While his splits weren’t that good last season, they reflected similar ideas with a .548 OPS from righties and a .722 OPS from lefties against him.

News and Notes

Elly De La Cruz-ing to the next base

Baseball Reference shared some information this morning that Elly De La Cruz is the first player since 2007 to have 15 stolen bases before the end of April. It’s only happened 15 times in history. There’s still a week left in the month, but it’s going to take some work to catch up to Rickey Henderson, who has spots one and two at 22 and 20 steals. It’ll take some work for him to set the Reds record, too, which is held by Deion Sanders at 19 (1997).

Bryce Harper is back

After spending three days on paternity leave, Harper is back in the lineup for Philadelphia this afternoon.

India back. Hope he can regain his stroke.

    • David

Bryce Harper is back, so soon after having a baby! 😉

Harper has 4 HR this season, and 3 in one night against the Reds. Actually, not exactly having a stellar year.
Frankly, I would keep Espinal at 2nd base right now. He’s actually hitting pretty good the last few days.
The Reds will have their work cut out for them today against Wheeler.
Nick Martinez may pitch well, but the bullpen may be a little gassed today.

Tomorrow in Texas, Hunter Greene faces our old friend, Mike Lorenzen, pitching pretty good for the Rangers.

      • VaRedsFan

I would have preferred India at 2B, Espy at 3rd, Ty at DH, with a day off for Candy.

So now that insures that Candy is star of the game. 😉

    • Mark Moore

I’m thinking India is “easing into it” with the DH role. Probably not a bad decision given we don’t know how “far down” he was.

    Martinez SSS caveat but

SP First time through order 2.19 xFIP 0.00 ERA
SP Second time though order 7.35 xFIP 9.00 ERA
SP Third time though order 7.11 xFIP 19.29 ERA
RP First time through order 3.08 xFIP 0.00 ERA
RP Second time through order 5.62 xFIP 5.40 ERA

    • VaRedsFan

Sounds like he should be a 3 inning reliever.

  3. Cincy6464

    Things I’ve noted in the young season;
    1. SP looking solid overall. Young guys learning & maturing.
    2. RP is lights out. Depth and reducing BBs.
    3. A Abbott is one smart “pitcher”
    4. F Cruz throws a nasty splitter – dynamite stuff!
    5. CES has nice compact swing – his hits from last games show he’s adjusting to situation. Hands in on inside pitch to punch ball down RF line then arms extended to drive outer half pitch to LCF fence.
    6. Depth & talent makes watching Redlegs fun – kudos to NK
    7. It’s a long season with many twists & turns ahead but I like how team is constructed.

  4. Mark Moore

1PM meeting almost queued up so we’re on mute for this sunny but cool afternoon contest. Playing for the W and some pride (since we now own the tie-breaker against them). Hope India can find his stroke.

It’s about time to KICK THIS PIG!!!

Best to Martinez as he starts today. 5 innings would be good. 6 would be fantastic.

  5. Mark Moore

Do we need to spot them a run in the 1st inning to replicate the method and magic of the last two games?

    Asking for a friend … 😐

  6. Mark Moore

Got to love Bike Helmets. Nice job again by CES starting that one to erase Turner’s single.

    • Daytonnati

Harper not exactly bustin’ it down the line?

  7. LT

Nick is agressive, throwing strikes, that’s great. I don’t understand why Martini is playing and Ty is not. There is no field position or DH for him? He’s hitting great.

    • Mark Moore

Because Fraley is still ailing would be my guess.

  8. old-school

26 pitches in 2 innings. Not too bad Mr.Martinez.

Lets get him some runs and get Philly off to the airport.

  9. Mark Moore

Meeting done … WLW audio on just in time to see India ground out to end the 2nd. Hoping for a quick game (and a W). I have yard to mow.

  10. Bill

I don’t understand why David Bell can’t come up with a solid lineup. Most teams especially successful ones has the same lineup. I know you change lineups when you substitute players because of facing right or left handed pitchers but he moves players up and down the lineup daily. When I played ball if you batted second you always batted second unless you went into a slump or such. Just like De Le Cruz is in the sixth spot one day, the second spot the next and the fifth the third. I think if he was put in a spot like third and left there his performance would improve even more so.
    Just my opinion

  11. Mark Moore

And then THAT happened … 😮

  12. Frostgiant80

Good thing he is just a long reliver. Nothing to see here. Move along.

  13. JB

Martinez is a bullpen pitcher. I don’t see anything from him that would suggest otherwise.

  14. CI3J

Feeling pretty good about taking the OVR 8.0.

    • JB

I’m thinking with the bullpen gassed it might be Martinez for awhile. Might be white flag day. I’ll take a split. Philly is a good team and it’s going to be hard getting 5 on Wheeler.

  15. Mark A Verticchio

They can’t send Martinez to the mound every 5th game, he isn’t a starter.

    • Tom Diesman

They can and he’ll do fine. Just like we knew Espinal would start hitting.

  16. JB

Espinal is growing on us all. Keep it up young man.

    • Wallyum

Followed by an equally awful one by Benson.

  17. JB

They weren’t borderline pitches Sadak. They were in the zone.

    • Mark Moore

I know their perspective of the zone isn’t the best, but they also have video feeds with “the little box” they can check.

      • JB

True but the one to Benson was a strike. I don’t care what angle they have. Maile swings at ball four and then takes a pitch that was way to close to stand and look at it.

  18. Daytonnati

Elly just getting better and better. He would have chased that one in the dirt before. The game is really slowing down for him.

    • JB

It’s remarkable how far he has come since the the first two weeks. The guy just works at getting better.

  19. Mark Moore

Nice job by Elly to wait that AB out. Ball 3 was most definitely wide of the zone.

  20. Mark Moore

Don’t try to get all of them back, Spencer. Let Wheeler work wild if he wants to.

  21. old-school

good at bats by Elly and Steer. nothing to show for it.

  22. Gpod

that inning will help us get into their bullpen……unless Bell waves the flag & leaves Martinez in there to get crushed

  23. dimondfvr

My eyesight is failing me. I though Bell sent Martinez back to the mound again!

  24. Frankie Tomatoes

Not the best start today from Nick. It was going to be hard to win against one of the best pitchers in baseball but needing to score at least five runs makes it even tougher. Might be good that Elly and Steer ran up Wheelers pitch count last inning and let them get to the bullpen quicker. Have to keep them from scoring again.

  25. JB

Good grief Candy. And it brings up Bohm who is hotter than heck.

    • Ted Alfred

Candy has been a huge disappointment offensively and defensively. That looks like a huge waste of 45 million dollars

  26. docmike

We all knew this was going to be a hard game to win. Philly’s #1 starter Zack Wheeler, sporting an ERA just a hair over 2, against our #5 starter / bullpen long man Nick Martinez. No one would’ve gone into this giving us much of a chance.

But before this series, I think most of us would’ve been happy with a split. Even if we don’t come back, I’m ok with that.

    • Jeremiah

I agree…my only concern would be long term that if the Reds get into the playoffs they may be quickly dispatched by the quality teams with 2 good starters such as Philly

      • docmike

It is true that we could see Wheeler and Suarez if we meet in the playoffs. But at least they wouldn’t be facing a tweener like Nick Martinez on the other side. And hopefully with our guys healthy we can scratch across a few runs ourselves.

  27. Mark A Verticchio

Candy and India are going to be big holes in the line up as the season moves on.

    • Tom Diesman

Doubtful. The back of their baseball cards say different.

  28. Gpod

Maile has basically given the Reds nothing at the plate this year

  29. JB

Wheeler has found that curveball now. Reds had their chances against him. When a pitcher like Wheeler opens the door for you, you have to take advantage because it won’t be open for long.

  30. Gpod

Just kind of waiting for the roof to collapse

  31. RedsGettingBetter

When the Reds staff considered Nick Martinez pitching today against Phillies and Wheeler I think they just gave up the game because Martínez is a 4-5 inning right now and with bulpen gassed it would be very difficult to keep an score on the line… As the first game of this series , this was lost before it would start…

    • VaRedsFan

Who else could they have used?
All the AAA guys are in bad form and probably worse than Nick M.
At least he burned through six innings.

Now Buck can do 2 and Wilson 1 and we are out the door with the good parts of the bullpen ready for next series.

      • RedsGettingBetter

Ashcraft could pitch today but I am just trying to see how they wanted to manage the starters and the games. I think they choose to be a losing matchup today but have a chance to win tomorrow using Ashcraft vs Eovaldi counting on a rested bullpen

  32. Mark Moore

So we at least split and head out with the tie-breaker edge. Better than I expected. Bats are flat today, but Wheeler is pretty good anyway.

  33. docmike

When you go into a 4-game series against the Phillies, and two of the games are against Ranger Suarez and Zack Wheeler, you know that you’d better win the other two games. Reds did just that, and earned a split. Good job, now let’s go on the road and get some more wins.

  34. MBS

The yard work I’ve been doing all day had to be more fun than watching this game

    • Gpod

just like the 1st game of the 4 games

    • Mark Moore

I need to go mow at least my back 40

  35. docmike

This lineup has a lot of black holes in it right now. You’ve got Elly with MVP-level numbers, Steer with solid numbers, and Benson with an average-ish OPS, then everyone else is below average or worse. Amazingly, after those first 3 hitters, the next best OPS from today’s starters is the .655 from Candelario.

But that’s what happens when two starters are out long-term (McLain and Friedl), another is sick (Fraley), and Stephenson is sitting the day after a night game. Can’t expect to score much when instead of those guys you’re starting Espinal, Martini, India, and Maile.

  36. Jeremiah

Reds have 5 regulars in the lineup batting under .200. It’s not just the Reds either.. how have major league hitters gotten so bad? I understand it’s early but it’s 60-70 at bats into the season for a lot of these guys …I don’t remember this in the past so many terrible batting averages 25 games into the season?

  37. Optimist

This was not a good performance by Martinez, but it was not very bad, and it was very necessary.

Another in line with what he and Suter are doing to save the bullpen and rest of the staff from fading in August.

With a little luck, and a passable offense this is a 5-2, 5-3 game going into the 7th.

You really cannot control when luck strikes, but even without the absences, they’re still short on offense.

Still, a clear step up from the past few seasons – let’s see if they can build throughout this season.

    • Mark Moore

Yep. The missed opportunities by Steer and others just made it far more difficult. Martinez did the minimum we needed today in getting his innings in. Jobu and the bats must already be at the airport waiting to travel.

      • Indy Red Man

They roll out their best pitcher and best hitter and no contest. We either score 7 or literally do nothing. Could always be worse

  38. Mark Moore

And that would be a provisional Clete for me. I have a yard to mow that I shouldn’t put off any longer today. Not expecting a miracle in the final 2 innings, but I certainly wouldn’t turn up my nose at it.

  39. RedsGettingBetter

Aside the slump, Steer has been unlucky recently when has made hard contact…It could be a regression in his BABIP

  40. docmike

His final line may not be pretty, but at least Martinez saved the bullpen today. And once again, a lot of the damage was done on the 2nd time through the order.

I still think he can be a very valuable piece of this team. Say Hunter Greene has a good start where he goes 5 innings and only allows 1 run, but his pitch count is over 100 and he’s gassed. Martinez would be great guy to bring in and have him give you a solid 3 innings. He could get you to Diaz or Cruz in the 9th, and still save the rest of the bullpen.
