Nick Lodolo

Teams just don’t send many lefties to the plate to face Lodolo. The few who are given the chance don’t find any success as they’ve hit just .147 against him in 84 trips to the plate. Right-handed hitters have been good across the board against him, showing a good average, drawing walks at a solid rate, and hitting for good power when he’s on the mound.

It’s been an impressive start to 2024 for Turnbull, who has allowed three earned runs total in his four starts this year. He’s dominated both righties and lefties, but he’s really been tough on lefties as they are hitting just .077 against him. Last season he only made seven starts, but left-handed hitters were quite good against him as they put up a .942 OPS. Righties put up a .764 OPS in 2023 when he was on the mound.

News and Notes

Reds acquired Peyton Burdick

Cincinnati picked up outfielder Peyton Burdick on waivers this afternoon from the Baltimore Orioles. He had seen action in the big leagues in 2022 and 2023 with the Marlins before being traded to Baltimore this spring. The Reds optioned him to Triple-A after the move. You can read more about the move here.

Jonathan India is back. Sort of.

Interesting to look at the standings.

With all the moves that St. Louis did this winter, still in last place, although not buried there. Lance Lynn and Sonny Gray seem to be pitching well, but maybe they aren’t scoring many runs?
A lot of the Cardinal’s player’s offensive statistics look kind of anemic.
I think I saw somewhere that the Brewers are now struggling with injuries to their starting rotation. The Cubs are poised to leap over them…soon?

    • RedsGettingBetter

Cubs moved Bellinger to 15-day IL after reportedly he has 2 fractured ribs. Timeline is not set yet. Suzuki is out too just about for a month…

  2. Jim Walker

Still no Fraley or India. Does anyone have a clue whether the illnesses the Reds are working through are positive Covid tests or what the protocols MLB is using this year?

    • Optimist

There’s an India update in the summary.

Lots of bugs going around and all seem to have similar symptoms and prognosis so doubt there’s any variety in protocols. Don’t mind not knowing unless there’s some severe peculiarity affecting someone.

      • Jim Walker

I was wondering how many guys had to be simultaneously afflicted before they might be allowed to bring guys up on an emergency basis outside of options and waivers like they’ve been able to do since the pandemic up to this year.

      • Optimist

Good question. Don’t know if that policy continues.

  3. Eddiek957

Bats won today. Ian had two k’s no hits

  4. LuciusRuber

    Cue Mark,
    It’s time……
    let’s get this done

    • Mark Moore

I’ll award you +1,000 if you can identify where that little ditty comes from 😀

  5. Indy Red Man

Odds boost Elly Over 1.5 hits, runs, RBI +200

Same game parlay Lodolo more Ks then Turnbull, Over 7.5 total runs, Elly score a run

  6. Mark Moore

Dinner consumed, third walk done, it’s time to …

    KICK THIS PIG!!!!

  7. Mark Moore

At least we get the TOOTBLAN out of that.

  8. JB

I guess Turners foot didn’t hurt as bad as he was making it out to be

    • Mark Moore

Yeah … I noticed the same thing. He got a monster jump from first.

  9. Mark Moore

Castellanos looks a bit lost there.

Oh, and did y’all see Bellinger went to the IL?

    • JB

Yep just when he was heating up after a slow start. Just a shame.

      • Mark Moore

I’d shed a tear in my beer if I were drinking one tonight

  10. Mark Moore

And you lose their #7 hitter after getting ahead. Bear down, Nick.

  11. Mark Moore

OK, got out of that minor jam. Ran up his own pitch count, but still not too bad. Just need a solid performance, not a perfect one.

Back him up, boys. Wake up Jobu and get him sober.

  12. JB

Nicks battling tonight. Struggling with that breaking ball. Let’s get him some runs.

  13. Indy Red Man

Candy and Espinal both K on garbage. Trying to get on board with Candy, but he’ll go a whole series with maybe 2 well hit balls let alone hits

  14. Mark A Verticchio

Remember the old Mendoza line, this line up has 5 of 9 qualify.

  15. Mark Moore

When you are consistently way off the plate, the Chumpire is gonna squeeze even your better pitches. To my point, Schwarber is now on first.

  16. Mark Moore

I feel my first Stink. Fish. Pot!!! of the night loading.

  17. VaRedsFan

That ball hung up in the corner or they have a shot at getting Schwarber at the plate…looked like it hit a notch in the wall

  18. Dennis Westrick

A walk and a HBP by Lodolo so far! Both runners have scored! Just sayin’!

    • Ted Alfred

Considering how off Lodolo’s control is tonight compared to the last two starts I’m very happy with two runs through five against this Phillies team.

  19. Mark Moore

There … that’s one run back. Got to feel good to Benson.

  20. Mark Moore

I’ll start by saying I’m not what you’d call a classic germophobe … but with the multiple bugs scurrying around the clubhouse, is the Viking helmet and cape really the best thing to do right now? Or maybe they’ve got a can of disinfectant they use after each guy wears it?

    • VaRedsFan

Maybe the helmet should come with a mask?

  21. Mark Moore

He’s lucky Elly wasn’t running or he might be on 3rd now.

  22. VaRedsFan

Purple oven mitt for Elly tonight.

  23. Mark Moore

Yeah … not sure he actually got him before Elly got to the base.

  24. Mark Moore

And Steer fails to put one in the air when we need it most.

  25. JB

Philly announcers trying to say that wasn’t a block.

    • MK

Scored a Stolen Base, didn’t know if it was SB or an error on third baseman.

  26. Mark Moore

    Squandered opportunity right there.

  27. VaRedsFan

I would have bet the farm that Steer would have got that run in. Normally great with 2 strikes.

    • Mark Moore

I’m surprised he didn’t get it done. Perfect situation for him.

  28. Mark Moore

And Nick rushes the throw and doesn’t help himself out.

  29. Mark Moore

    yeah, that’s getting overturned.

    • JB

How could he miss that? He had the perfect angle.

  30. Dennis Westrick

Lodolo’s pitch count at 70 thru only 4 innings! Not good!

    • LarkinPhillips

Turnbull is at 71. 2 15-17 pitch innings gets him through 6 at just 100-105 pitches. That’s not the worst thing in the world.

  31. MK

Tyler Stephenson doesn’t look like he is having fun when he plays.

    • Mark Moore

He’s going to be a dad in the 2nd half of the season … maybe that’s what’s on his mind.

  32. LT

Can the Reds manage to win this type of game when their ACE on the mound and play at home?

  33. Indy Red Man

Martini coming back to Earth with a thud.
We’re struggling to get 3 guys going at the same time

  34. Mark Moore

    Candy and Es-PEE-nal contributing.

    C’mon, Stewie!!

    • Harry Stoner

Maybe it’s time to stop with the childish jokes with Espinal Hispanic name?

      • Mark Moore

It’s how Sadak pronounces it. That’s who I’m jabbing at. Not at Espinal, Harry. Sorry if you missed that theme from several games ago.

      • Harry Stoner

Yeah, I guessed I missed it.
Still isn’t funny in the least.
I’m sorry that somehow you think it is.
I come from a large mixed ethnic family: Hispanic-Tejano-Irish.
It isn’t funny at all, no matter how you try to explain it.
Why not just let it go and try something else?

      • Mark Moore

Sorry to offend you, Harry. That’s the last thing I intended to do. I appreciate your explanation. I have tremendous respect for these young Latinx players who learn to communicate in at least 2 languages all while honing their craft. I certainly can’t do that.

      • Harry Stoner

        Thanks, Mark.
I wasn’t thinking the worst of you, just of the overall context.
I don’t listen to the broadcast often, so can’t imagine the announcer trying to be offensive, more likely just tone-deaf.
But less well intended folks can pick up on this and make things worse.
I’ve been dealing with this type of thing my whole life.

      • Doc

I know very little Spanish but I do know that the letter ‘i’ is pronounced “e”, and that the next to last syllable is often accented. Would that not make the proper pronunciation of the name, phonetically, es-PEE-nal where the capital letters are not meant to emphasize a word but rather to emphasize that it is the accented syllable?

      • Harry Stoner

        Sure, D-ahhhh-c, whatever you say.

I’m of mixed ethnicity, fluent in Spanish (and in English, too) and I know my pronunciation.

You can jabber around for some type of rationale for this type of nonsense, but you’re only contributing to the problem.

Oh course, I doubt you’d be self-reflective enough to even be aware of it.

        If you’re a doctor, you’re hopefully a learned individual.

This would be a good time to act like one.

  35. Mark Moore

Closer to the Bike Helmets than what I thought it might be. Nice pick by Candy.

  36. Mark Moore

Now for the Bike Helmets from Castellanos.

  37. Dennis Westrick

Again, too many walks by Reds pitchers, especially the starters!

    • Mark Moore

At least Turnbull’s pitch count is keeping up with Lodolo. But it is getting tiring seeing that movie over and over again.

  38. Mark Moore

And Turner falls for the LL deke for a TOOTBLAN!!!

  39. VaRedsFan

That may be the first time I ever saw the ole fake throw work.

  40. Dennis Westrick

Looking like another 5 inning outing for a Reds starter!

    • Mark Moore

Very short leash if he goes out for the 6th.

    • LarkinPhillips

This is Lodolos third start. He went 5.2 first game and 6.1 second. He can easily finish the 6th today with 14-17 pitches and stay under 105 pitches.

  41. Indy Red Man

Benson swinging at bad 2-0 there. He’s expanded his zone a little, but I think he’ll be fine. Turnbull is about like Ben Lively…this isn’t going to last for him

  42. JB

Stubbs is about as big as Eddie Gaedel behind the plate.

  43. VaRedsFan

Turnbell is just a fill in starter that will lose his spot when Walker comes back.
It’s crazy that they would remove him from the rotation.
    He commands every pitch.

  44. Dennis Westrick

Bell needs to have a short leash with Lodolo here!

  45. Mark Moore

Buckle up, Cupcakes … nobody out, corners occupied, Sims coming on. Hoping for another “miracle” like last night to keep this in check.

  46. Indy Red Man

Going to look like after the fact, but I didn’t like bringing Lodolo back. You got through 5 on a high note. Oh well not out of reach yet, but our bats are terrible

  47. Mark Moore

Damage limited. Now if only we could string together a couple of hits …

  48. Dennis Westrick

Time for a couple of bloops and a blast!

  49. VaRedsFan

Senzel is back playing and hit a HR tonight.

    • JB

Good. I like the guy and hope he does well

    • Mark Moore

Good for Nick. I’m still thinking about a trip to DC the weekend the Reds are in town.

  50. Mark Moore

I swear I thought they were joking a bit when the introduced the pitcher … granting him a knighthood for whatever reason … 😀

But I’m happy to see him miss the plate that badly. The stuff that fuels a rally.

  51. Mark Moore

GR2B … we’ll take it. Just hope we don’t “Strand” anyone on 3rd here.

  52. Harry Stoner

    Candelario’s moment comes.
    And goes.
    Wil Myers II.

  53. Mark Moore

Now that little flair, please, Santiago … pretty please …

    • Mark Moore

Just like that. Castellanos dogging it a bit and we capitalize.

  54. Bet on Red

espinal with back to back rbi games….. give that man a 20 year contract

  55. JB

I have more faith in Espinal than jeimer Moustakas

    • Ted Alfred

45M down the drain. Oh well, Marte back in another 56 games

      • VaRedsFan

        not back.
Prolly a 2 week ramp up

  56. VaRedsFan

    Huge clutch hit Espinal.
    Put it in play.

  57. JB

Sir Anthony of Lancelot is not very good.

    • Mark Moore

Talk about “throw the next one at the Bull …”

  58. Mark Moore

Looks like a line shot in the box score, right?

  59. Mark Moore

Another GR2B … and Elly did it from the right side.

  60. JB

This looks like the Philly bullpens of the past.

  61. Mark Moore

Steer’s a little anxious to contribute here.

  62. Ronnie

Ground rule doubles keep stealing runs from us!

  63. VaRedsFan

    Willie left on left,
then Elly driving it as a righty.

  64. Mark Moore

Stubbs is earning his paycheck tonight.

  65. Mark Moore

OK, bullpen … let’s finish kicking this pig!!

  66. Harry Stoner

    Steer having a rough off-night.

A hit would have broken it open..

  67. Ted Alfred

And right on cue Candy blows the super easy TaylorMade double play

    • VaRedsFan

He bobbles everything hit to him, and has no arm.

  68. Mark Moore

    Pagan isn’t fooling them tonight.

  69. RedBB

Honestly..outisde of Curz this BP sucks

  70. VaRedsFan

    Candy good defense …….greatly exaggerated.

  71. VaRedsFan

Cruz is great…why not start the inning with him?
    Then Suter 8th?
    Diaz 9th.?

  72. LT

Cruz is like Gault of 2023: great escape

  73. Indy Red Man

    That was big!

Candy .673 career ops in April so he’s a slow starter.

  74. Mark Moore

But I thought if you bobble it you have to tank the throw from 3rd as well.

    Challenge gonna work I think.

  75. Indy Red Man

Give the man a home cooking single …again…lol

    • VaRedsFan

They changed yesterdays single an error.

  76. JB

Martini 1 for his last 23 and they gift him there. I would bring up Ford. The dude is hot and gives us some pop.

  77. Mark Moore

Way to go TySteve … and Thompson ends up on 3rd.

  78. Old-school

Stephenson hit that one on the screws

  79. Mark Moore

OK, Candyman … deep enough fly ball

  80. Mark Moore

And one of our hottest hitters (admittedly unexpected) to the plate.

    • Mark Moore

And he does what we needed him to do.

  81. Mike W

Glad to hear Bell FINALLY committed to hitting Elly second all the time when the Reds are facing a RH SP.
Of course Elly should have been hitting 2nd or 3rd EVERY game this year as I’ve said since game #1(and in 23 posts over 20 games).
So, Elly has a single against the Philly’s RH starter AND an RBI double against their LH RP.
Elly is now hitting .305 for the season.
I’ll close in my normal fashion:
Bell, put Elly in the 2 hole every night and leave him there (unless you want to move him to the #3 hole when our regulars come back).

  82. Old-school

    Espy knocks in bubba

    I just said that

  83. Bet on Red

did i say 20 years….. 30 year contract for espinal

  84. Mark Moore

    6 outs … that’s not asking much … 6 measly outs.

  85. JB

Don’t the umps check the Phillies pitchers gloves anymore? That’s three times tonight that the pitcher has walked into the dugout with no check.

    • Mark Moore

They are supposed to. Maybe we’re just not seeing it?

    • LarkinPhillips

I think they check relievers on the way in.

  86. Indy Red Man

Berated Espinal Monday and now he’s Jerry Hairston Jr Jr. I’m impatient

    • Mark Moore

Join the club … we’ve got jackets on order

  87. Mark Moore

Suter made short work of them. Diaz will get the toughest hitters with at least a 2-run lead.

  88. VaRedsFan

If india comes back tomorrow, Let Espinal play 3rd.
    Ty DH
    Candy day off.

    • Mark Moore

Something along those lines … definitely let Espinal man 3rd.

  89. Mark Moore

But Elly can’t hit RHP with any regularity …

He just turned on that one and smoked it.

  90. VaRedsFan

2 missiles from the right side for Elly

  91. Mark Moore

OK, Spencer. Just lift a moderate fly ball. That’s all we need.

    • Melvin

Lots of “Ellyctricity” in the house tonight. 😉

  92. Old-school

Elly making a case as NL player of the month

  93. Mark Moore

As I said earlier, when you are missing that badly, you don’t get the close calls.

Love that we’re burning up their bullpen arms.

  94. JB

It pains me to say but Steer isn’t the best player on the team anymore. Elly has come a long way in the past couple of weeks. That kid has great work ethic. His fielding is way better since the first few weeks. Not to mention his hitting.

    • Melvin

We’ll still keep Steer though. 😉 If Elly comes close to reaching his potential he’ll be the best player in the majors. 🙂

  95. Stoney

Elly is just incredible. What a weapon. And he’s only going to get better. Imagine that.

  96. LarkinPhillips

    Elly! WOW!

Good execution by steer and nice ti see CES walk. He is getting ready to get hot!

  97. JB

Bubba strikes out. Oh well , we can’t have everything.

    • Mark Moore

He was having a fair AB until that last foul tip.

  98. Mark Moore

OK, Diaz … no mucking around. Go after them and get them out any way you can.

Espinal with Day tonight WHEN we get there. That’s my prediction.

  99. Indy Red Man

Lodolo wasn’t sharp so this is a big win if they nail it down. Not hitting much this year, but they are getting timely 2 out knocks

  100. Indy Red Man

I’m taking Bohm tomorrow over 1.5 bases. He’s on fire

  101. Mark Moore

Bohm is dialed in at the plate tonight.

  102. Mark Moore

And BIKE HELMETS to finish it. Nice start by CES and finish by Espinal … with Elly in the middle, of course.

    • Mark Moore

I’m pretty sure any one of us would take a split after Monday and given how hot the Phillies were coming into town. Now we have it and a chance to take the series. Can’t ask for much more than that.

  103. Mark Moore

My First Wife just remarked that Bell was smiling in that shot … 😛

    • VaRedsFan

      Confirmed…I saw it too!!
He has reason to, total team effort tonight.

  104. Ronnie

A split at worst w a shot at 3 outta 4 from the red hot phils? Great game

  105. Jason T.

What a win. This team can win in many ways. Another locked in bullpen game.
Elly just doing what Elly does.
Feels great to have won back to back games against the Phillies.

  106. bug

That’s what I’m talkin’ about! Go Reds!!!

  107. Amarillo

We now own the playoff tiebreaker against Philly. That could become really important.

  108. Mark A Verticchio

14 and 10 with all the injuries, sickness and 1 big suspension that is very good, go get another one tomorrow.

  109. Matt McWax

Great win, 14-10 without Friedl, McClain, and Marte. That’s a good sign. Elly came up big again. I think he is confirming that he is a burgeoning hitter from the right side. It’s amazing how much value he creates if he’s going strong. Since about April 8th, he’s slugged over 800, I think ops about 1.300 in that stretch.

  110. Jason T.

Also back to back good games from Espinal. What an unexpected surprise!

    • Melvin

Here’s to hoping David Bell keeps his usual “getaway” lineup tomorrow and keeps Espinal in the lineup. 🙂

  111. Mark Moore

And it’s Espinal!!! He earned it.

    “Trying to get barrel”

  112. Mark A Verticchio

With the new tie breaking rules the win tonight gives the Red’s the season series win over Phils, you never know how huge that could be.

  113. Mike W

    Great finish.
    Great team win.
    Great hitting and pitching.
Hopefully our GM can sign Elly to a longer term contract like he did with Hunter. Elly is 22 and arguably better than anyone (non pitcher) in baseball in everything. Stay healthy and keep having fun Elly (and Bell plz don’t ever put him in the OF where he could get injured more easily as you know he’s going to run and dive for a ball.) Go Reds!
