Andrew Abbott

Teams aren’t sending too many left-handed hitters out to face Abbott, but the ones that do get to the batters box against him haven’t found much success this season as they’ve hit .200 without a walk or an extra-base hit. Right-handed hitters haven’t done much in terms of average or getting on base, but they have hit for a good amount of power when they have found some hits. That’s how things went for him in his rookie season, too.

Cristopher Sanchez

It’s been a good start to the year for Sanchez as he’s building on a strong 2023 season. As a lefty he has dominated left-handed hitters this year, allowing just three baserunners out of the 16 plate appearances lefties have had against him. They’ve managed just two hits and one walk. Righties have hit for a good average against him this season, but they haven’t shown much power.ย  That’s how it played out last season for lefties, who hit .133 in the very limited opportunities they had against him. Righties did show a good amount of pop against him last season, slugging .473 in 2023 when Sanchez was on the mound.

I know, I know, we don’t have alot of options, but I prefer Stephenson down around 7th….

    • MBS

Stephenson is the 2nd highest at .812OPS vs LHP on the roster. Number 1 is Steer at .923OPS vs LHP. He used to bat cleanup for us, plus Stephenson has been hot recently.

      • MBS

Sorry I edited, and chopped up my post too much, now it’s unreadable. The point is Stephenson is a good choice for the 3 hole vs a LHP.

  2. LT

Whatโ€™s our record against southpaw this year?

  3. Mark Moore

Good to see Moll is back up. Now I wonder who is the odd man out when Frankie comes back.

I only hope there is some SERIOUS PIG KICKING done tonight!!

    • CI3J

I imagine it would be Justin Wilson. Don’t need 3 lefties in the pen, and he has performed the worst (in an admittedly very small sample size) out of all relievers not named Lucas Sims.

    • LarkinPhillips

Moll still has options as well. I need to see him perform better before we ship Wilson out. Molls velo was down and he didn’t do great on his rehab assignment.

  4. Mark Moore

Dinner consumed (leftover grilled chicken & peppers with freshly made guac, Melvin). 3rd walk completed. Game on the phone.

    Time to KICK THIS PIG!!!

  5. Mark Moore

Closer than I thought it would be. Nice throw from Steer. Doesn’t matter with that 2nd double. Looked like another cement mixer to me.

  6. Dennis Westrick

And, we start with a one run deficit!

    • Mark Moore

      Beats 2 or 3 or 5 … ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

  7. Mark Moore

OK, Stewie. Show us how much you want this.

  8. VaRedsFan

    Phils strike early.
To their credit, they figure out the opposing pitchers game plan so early.
Once they see 1st pitch fastball strikes, they start attacking 1st pitches.

  9. GreatRedLegsFan

Garrett Cooper has just been DFA by the Cubs, can play corner OF and 1B, solid RH bat. I guess heโ€™d be a better option than Thompson from the bench.

    • Tom Diesman

I was thinking along that line too. Heโ€™s over.800 OPS lifetime vs LH and would make a great platoon mate with Benson or Fraley Itโ€™d all come down to whether his RF defense would be good enough.

  10. Mark Moore

The one time Stewie isn’t going … ๐Ÿ˜

  11. Mark Moore

Nice time for CES’ bat to wake up. Thanks, Jobu!

  12. Jason T.

    CES, clutch hit!
Great at bat by Candelario too.

  13. VaRedsFan

    Candy/CES are showing signs.
Think they may start of a little heater.

  14. VaRedsFan

Didn’t take long for Phil Cuzzy to make his presence known.

    • VaRedsFan

93.3% accuracy on ball/strikes places him in the lower 3rd of the league.

  15. Ronnie

I pray for a split in this series. The phils are really good

    • Mark Moore

+500 and a win tonight goes a long way toward that goal.

    • wkuchad

If Iโ€™m praying, then Iโ€™m going big: 3-1. Though Iโ€™d be great with a split.

    • Mark Moore

Nice play by Candy. One less hitch step and no challenge needed. Good, quick overturn on that one.

  16. VaRedsFan

    Great play by Candy.
I do wish he would fire the ball over with a little more heat.
He’s made several plays close this year, by lolly-popping the throw over.

  17. VaRedsFan

    Back to Elly’s AB.
With 1st base open, and nobody hitting behind him, he has to know, they are going to feed him trash. Sure enough, 2 junk balls in the dirt and he was in the hole.

  18. Old-school

Phillies are back to back NLCS participants for a good reason. They are good. Bryce harper isnt even playing

  19. Mark Moore

Good thing Abbott didn’t get the tip of his glove on that one.

    Nice inning overall.

  20. Harry Stoner

Why can’t / won’t Hunter Greene learn to throw a changeup?

    Sanchez killing with it.

  21. Harry Stoner

EDLC: A walk is a double. I love it.

  22. Mark Moore

Elly running all the way takes advantage of that miscue by Bohm. Feeling better about things tonight.

  23. Indy Red Man

CES with 2 separate 2 out RBI hits. Wow and now 2 more on an error

  24. Mark Moore

Slap it and go … that also works.

  25. Old-school

    This is fun

Now get 6 outs and make this official

    • VaRedsFan

Hopefully some sample size shake out.

  26. Dennis Westrick

And I thought the Reds defense was bad!

  27. VaRedsFan

Antone in the booth next inning if anybody wants to tune in

    • VaRedsFan

So well spoken. He definitely has a future after the game if he chooses.

  28. Indy Red Man

They gave Martini a 2 RBI single on that….lol. Turner had him by 2 steps?
Philly broadcast on Crackstream. I like it

    • Mark Moore

Scoring decisions these days are almost as ridiculous as the Bizzarro-Zone by the Chumpires.

  29. Old-school

Bohm at first base phillies and hoskins first base brewers are awful

  30. LarkinPhillips

Steers BABIP is plummeting. He keeps squaring it up though.

    • David

Spencer is probably not a GREAT hitter, but is a good one. Well above league average.
These guys are not statistical robots, so everybody has off days.

  31. LarkinPhillips

Ball and strike challenge system can’t be implemented fast enough.

  32. Dennis Westrick

Why do the Reds pitchers continually walk the leadoff hitter? Most of the time it’s when the Reds are nursing a lead!

  33. Dennis Westrick

Abbott is now playing with fire! Stop with the walks, please!

  34. Gpod

two 3-1 pitches that were not even close…..that’s a way to open a big inning

  35. VaRedsFan

    B2B walks not a good start….Need a double play.

  36. Indy Red Man

Lets just walk them back into the game?

  37. Ted Alfred

    Wow…a 4 run lead top 5th facing
7-8-9 and walk the bases full…sheesh

  38. Mark Moore

Yeah … that was low. Gonna take a minor miracle to get out of this one without significant damage.

  39. Dennis Westrick

Abbott seems to lose focus about the same point in every one of his starts, the 5th inning!

  40. Dennis Westrick

If Abbott gets out of this mess of his on doing, he needs to change his middle name to Houdini!

  41. Ronnie

So tired of our starters not even able to make it thru 6 (and sometimes 5)

  42. Mark Moore

Got to focus here. Nowhere to put anybody.

  43. Indy Red Man

Get some Bell haters!! He pulls the starters too soon….wahhhhhhh

    • Mark Moore

I am decidedly NOT a Bell fan. But Abbott was done at that point. Cruz was a gamble that paid off nicely.

      • Indy Red Man

I don’t like that we lack fundamentals year after year after year, but he’s average overall. No better no worse

      • Mark Moore

He still ranks 30 of 30 on my score card ๐Ÿ˜€

      • VaRedsFan

If your team lacks fundamentals, you aren’t average.

  44. Mark Moore

Everybody exhale … we dodged a HAIL of bullets there.

  45. VaRedsFan

Cruz should get a save just for that.
At least a steak dinner from AA

    • Mark Moore

Full rack of ribs at Montgomery Inn.

  46. Gpod

Cruz is a real keeper in that bullpen

  47. RedsGettingBetter

    Fernando Cruz!!
Abbott lost his focus or something related to mechanics because he was cruising and suddenly he had no command at all…

  48. Rex

let’s Larkin to rehab and keep Tejay Antone in the booth

  49. Mark Moore

Bleeder of a base hit for CES. And Elly from the left side. All good things.

    • Mark Moore

Had his Lucky Buckeye in his pocket, no doubt.

  50. Melvin

EDLC! ๐Ÿ™‚ His pop ups tend to go out.

  51. Andrew Brewer

And Big Boy De La Cruz hits it out after taking time out with a 3-2 count…

  52. Jason T.

This is the CES I expect to see. Heโ€™s got so much talent.
Fantastic Elly! What a difference a night makes for our hitting.

    • Dennis Westrick

Good (and timely) hitting can cure a lot of pitching woes!

  53. VaRedsFan

Elly leg kick is a little higher than it has been.
But he mashed it the other way…a long way.

    • Mark Moore

I thought I saw just shy of 400 and 109mph

  54. SR

Think Abbot is fighting the flu bug that keeps hitting our starters? India flamed out mid-game too.

    • Mark Moore

Quite possibly the case. At least he didn’t let it slip completely away. HT to Bell for yanking him (and you know it kind of burns my finger tips to type that).

  55. 44Reds

Tejay Antone is outstanding in the booth. Great dude with a lot of insightful commentary.

    • Mark Moore

Given the state of his elbow, maybe that’s his next best option.

    • Jason T.

Just a great dude. Well spoken and articulate. Heโ€™s fun to listen to.

  56. Mark S

Nice HR EDC! I forgot the backstory on Fernando Cruz. Made his MLB debut at age 32! A 2007 KC Royals draft pick. He is pitching lights out.

  57. Dennis Westrick

Sign Cruz to a long time contract tonight!

  58. Melvin

Gonna switch over and watch the Pacers in the playoffs soon. Bring this one home for me guys. ๐Ÿ™‚

  59. Andrew Brewer

Notice how Bell is saving Cruz for another day …

    • VaRedsFan

      I think that’s a good call.
Hopefully they can give Suter another day too.

  60. Dennis Westrick

This is what drives me nuts about Bell’s handling/mishandling of the Reds bullpen! Cruz faces 2 batters, throws only 6 pitches and he’s done for the night?

But, Bell just loves the Astronaut Farmer!

    • Mark S

You can’t seriously be mad about not sending Cruz out when the Reds are ahead 7-1. Can you?

    • Jim t

Farmer didnโ€™t pitch Sunday in the 8.1 bull pen effort. He didnโ€™t want to use Cruz for 2 innings tonight which would have made him unavailable for Wednesday game. Have no issue with using Farmer and Wilson to close out this game with a 6 run lead and resting the others with a night and day game coming up.

  61. Dennis Westrick

There’s the Reds defense we’ve come to know and love!

      • Dennis Westrick

Obviously, my negative comment brought some positive vibes!

      • Melvin

Good job. You know what your’e doing. ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Mark Moore

Took a bit of a funky hop and the glove angle was a bit weird. At least it kept Bohm on 2nd. And then Elly happened and made it a non-event.

  62. Mark Moore

Bike Helmets based on some good fielding there.

  63. docproc

Tejay Antone is a fabulous color guy–he has a future in the booth.

  64. Dennis Westrick

Lucky, lucky, lucky! Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good!

  65. Mark Moore

PSA given the onslaught of sports betting commercials …

If you think you might have a gambling problem, especially with baseball, call 1-800-OHTANI for help.

    ๐Ÿ˜› ๐Ÿ˜› ๐Ÿ˜›

    • Dennis Westrick

That’s a good one, Mark! I listed Draft Kings as a dependent on my 2023 IRS tax return!

  66. VaRedsFan

Who’s seen that kid in college that throws 99 with 1 arm and 95 with the other?
    Now that’s talent.

  67. LarkinPhillips

Hopefully larkin and sadak are taking notes from Antone. He is fabulous in the booth.

    • Mark Moore

They spent extended time with Joey who also did a great job. It didn’t make any difference. Not sure they even know how to take notes

  68. VaRedsFan

    Batting practice for Friedl tomorrow.

    • Mark Moore

Little steps. Him for Bubba is a big step forward.

  69. Beaufort Red

Hope to someday hear Antone as a Reds color guy. Knows the game and speaks well.

    • VaRedsFan

      He was great.
      LeCure is also very good.
      Welsh is great .

They aren’t kicking the HOF’er (player) out of the booth though.

  70. Dennis Westrick

So, Farmer issues the customary free pass to the leadoff hitter via the HBP!

    • Jason T.

Recovered nicely though thanks to that incredible play by Elly.
Nice to see Farmer give us 2 scoreless innings.

  71. VaRedsFan

Oh my Elly… That’s as hard as it gets!

    • Mark Moore

Welsh said “he basically outran the ball” ๐Ÿ˜ฎ ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

  72. Dennis Westrick

As much as I dislike Farmer, he did a good job!

  73. RedsGettingBetter

Farmer has been doing his job as we can expect from his role, despite we would rather someone a little more reliable than him… He lowered his ERA at 3.55…Not bad so far…

  74. Dennis Westrick

Just noticed the Reds lineup has 4 batters hitting below .200! And, I think CES was below .200 as well prior to his 3 for 4 tonight! Makes you wonder how the Reds ever score more than a couple of runs per game! Offensive juggernaut we are not!

    • Ronnie

This team is missing mcclain, friedl, and marte. All can be .300 hitters and top of order guys. Instead we get to watch guys like candelario bat .160

  75. Dennis Westrick

Anybody know why Bryce Harper is MIA?

      • Dennis Westrick

That’s right! Men can now have babies I hear! Relax everyone1 It’s a joke!

      • LarkinPhillips

His wife had the baby lol. (Sorry I couldn’t resist.)

      • Melvin

        “Relax everyone1 Itโ€™s a joke!”

        Thanks for clarifying. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  76. Dennis Westrick

Somebody put a lighted candle in front of the Jobu doll! Pagan now on the mound!

      • Dennis Westrick

If Pagan comes out for the 9th (unlikely – Bell’s rules you know) will need to put some rum in front of Jobu as well!

  77. Mark Moore

“Throw the next one at the Bull …”

    • Dennis Westrick

Will need to bring Aroldis Chapman back to endanger the bull mascot!

  78. Bet on Red

espinal homered get the 10 year extension ready

    • Mark Moore

Including a bucket of Lucky Buckeyes … AWESOME!!!!

      • Bet on Red

notice its the non dancing ones we win

  79. Jason T.

Holy sh1t Espinal! 3 hits and one is a homer. Wow!

  80. LarkinPhillips

Espy 3-4 with HR. Out was a hard lineout oppo. Hopefully the start of him getting hot.

    • LarkinPhillips

He will be benched tomorrow for India.

  81. Dennis Westrick

Stop the presses! Buy a lottery ticket! Espinal actually hit a HR!

  82. RedsGettingBetter

Whaaaat? Espinal homered! that’s definetly gonna be unforgettable

  83. Dennis Westrick

Need to close this out! Pie-Rats beat the Brewers!

  84. Mark Moore

About the easiest re-entry possible for Moll, even if it is a tough Phillies team. Very low pressure.

    • LarkinPhillips

He needs it. I am very concerned about him right now. Hopefully he is back fully healthy like last year.

  85. Mark Moore

Probably doesn’t get overturned, but no risk at this point. I think “call stands” is what we hear.

  86. VaRedsFan

    As I mentioned earlier.
Candy Lolly-pops it over to 1st.

  87. DataDumpster

Great rebound today. However, I was more interested in the Braves game where Max Fried pitched a complete game shutout with 92 pitches. Don’t see that very often anymore.

    • Mark Moore

      ๐Ÿ˜ฎ ๐Ÿ˜ฎ ๐Ÿ˜ฎ ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

  88. Mark Moore

I switched to the TV audio feed after the out … and now I get to hear Sadak use up whatever spare words he has left in his bag. “Meandering” and “anti-climactic” caught my attention.

  89. Mark Moore

There we go. Gave Moll a chance to whiff him!!

Who do we get with Jim Day tonight?

  90. VaRedsFan

    Welcome back Mr Moll.
Great game tonight for the good guys.

  91. LarkinPhillips

Moll looked good tonight. That’s encouraging. Great job Cruz. CES and EDLC looked like the duo we saw last year in AAA. Big win tonight!

  92. Dennis Westrick

Nice job Sam Moll! Welcome back!

  93. bug

Go Reds!!! Impressive bullpen again. Elly coming into his own. Even Bell is making good game calls. Go Reds!!!! Let’s win this series.

  94. VaRedsFan

For those of you that had under 8.5.
You got beat by an Espynal homer

  95. Mark Moore

And we get Fernando with Day!!!

  96. Justin T

This bullpen is filthy. Are they impressive or what.

Who knows why we cant look this way more consistently, its a tough sport. I think with India not out there its a noticeable difference in energy. I know its tough seeing him struggle out there but he makes this team go. Love him in the leadoff spot, its the one great thing our lineup consistently gets right. But I am happy to see the bats get going tonight, especially Benson. That was a solid base hit and hopefully a slump buster.

    Cheers Reds fans

  97. Andrew Brewer

What a reversal from Game 1. The Reds capitalized on Philly mistakes in the 3rd for 4 runs and set the tone. But what happened to Abbott after the 4th ? He couldn’t find the strike zone to save his life. He didn’t pitch a strike to Schwarber either, but got the strike out for the 1st out because Schwarber was too eager. Fernando Cruz came on with 6 pitches and ended the threat. This is why you don’t get down after 1 loss, because you can’t win ’em all, and baseball is 90% mental, as Yogi Berra said once upon a time.
