Frankie Montas

The last time out for Montas was an outing he’d like to forget as he gave up five runs and couldn’t record an out in the 3rd inning before being removed against Seattle.

This season teams have stacked lefties against Montas and it’s paid off as they’ve found plenty of success against him. Right-handed hitters have struggled against him, hitting just .185 so far and not showing much power. That’s been the story for his career as he’s held righties to an OPS 123 points lower than left-handed hitters.

Jose Soriano

This will be Soriano’s third career start after making over 40 relief appearances in 2023 and 2024. His last two outings were both as a starter and in his last one he walked a tight rope as he allowed one run in 5.0 innings, but walked five batters against Tampa Bay.

While the sample size for his big league career is still small because he’s been used mostly as a reliever, he’s dominated against left-handed hitters, who only have one extra-base hit against him in 107 plate appearances while also only hitting .169. Right-handed hitters have been successful, posting an .817 OPS against him.

Time to shake the clubhouse bug! Today is down to Frankie Montas. But a bounce back for him, and a bounce back sweep for the team would be a sweet Sunday finish. Go Reds!

  2. LDS

Soriano has significant reverse splits. I’m not sure how well loading up the Reds lineup with lefties is going to work. This is one of the examples that makes me question Bell’s approach. He went with the L/R thing, not that there are many options on the depleted Reds. Of the 13 position players, 7 of them are hitting less than .200, including Candelario, CES, Benson, and India. Pitching is shaky as well with on 4 of 13 having ERAs less than 4.00. That has to change or this is yet another lost season.

  3. DataDumpster

At this point, I guess it’s commendable that they have a winning record although the opposition has been pretty weak. What is this “bug” they are talking about? To my knowledge they haven’t explained anything and I can’t imagine what it could be. School children get these kind of things all the time but young adult athletes? Mystifying. Going on 2 weeks or more I think.

    • greenmtred

Young adult athletes aren’t immune to flu, Covid, rsv, various other viruses and bugs. School kids–and their teachers–get this stuff frequently because they’re together all day, and so are ballplayers.

  4. Ronnie

Who leaves to make room for friedl? I would assume bubba. We don’t really need his speed.

  5. gusnwally

I have been so sick the last 2 weeks I thought I might die. Wife has been the same. She finally went to the hospital yesterday and it is definately the flu. I lost 11 lbs while not being able to hardly eat anything. The medical people have been telling people to get a flu shot. Normally that is a september thing. Not a April warning. Must be going around pretty bad.

  6. Mark Moore

That clubhouse bug can’t cycle through fast enough for me. Taking out two at a time really hurts.

  7. KYRedsfan

Got some work to do on my lil farm today so instead of catching the whole game I’ll be watching here n there. Go Redlegs!

  8. Mauired

Just saw that Elly is the 1st player with 5 homers and 10 steals in 1st 20 games of the year since Ken Williams in 1922.

Ken Williams is one of the forgotten superstars of baseball. 1st 30/30 player in baseball in 1922. Was close to being first 40/40 with 39 homers and 37 steals. Nobody else had a 30/30 season until Willie Mays in the 50’s.

Ken Williams actually started his major league career with the Reds but they lost his rights when they sent him back to minors. Which hurt them in the 20s because their teams had great pitching but always fell short because they didn’t have enough offense.

In 1922, he out homered Ruth and set the franchise record with 155 RBI for Orioles. He played for the St Louis Browns who moved to Baltimore in the 50’s. In an ironic twist of fate, the Cleveland Browns also moved to Baltimore.

Williams career .924 ops is still top 50 in baseball history.

    • greenmtred

Thanks, Mauired. I’d never heard of Williams before your comment.

    • Steelerfan

Agreed. Great post, and made me look him up.

Nice to still have a positive little corner of the internet….

    • DataDumpster

That’s quite a find. I guess he is forgotten because he didn’t really find his stride until he was 30 so denting his career stats and the St. Louis Browns (well…)

      • Mauired

Yeah. World War 1 shorted his prime two years and contributed his late start. His traditional counting career stats are also not great due to the shorter career, but his slash line is better than many hall of famers. He was an elite player in the 20s.

  9. MBS

Coming out of spring I thought Bell was going to go 1 India, 2 EDLC, 3 Steer. It seems like he’s been working his way there.

  10. Mark Moore

So we’ve got 11 guys to cover 9 slots today … only Bubba and Stewie available off the bench with a MAYBE for Fraley (but probably not for India).

Here’s hoping Frankie is dialed in from the start. We’re gonna need that. At least it’s sunny there. We’ve got chilly and damp/rain here in Raleigh.

Just about time to KICK THIS PIG!!!

And, after Annie, to switch the audio feed and hope the sync is good … 😀

    • Pharmer85

Not a hockey fan? I was in Raleigh last weekend- beautiful weather then- visiting a friend and saw the Canes play CBJ (my team) at PNC arena.

  11. Bet on Red

not that I am knocking Annie Sabo…. but where is Jim Day?

    • Mark Moore

Yeah, as I understand it, he’s cycling through the bug.

  12. Old-school

Reds home attendance up 5300 per game from 2023 per Codify

3rd in MLB behind the 2 WS teams
    ?

    • Tom Reeves

Assuming that holds for the season, that’s roughly $17m for the team to have available in extra cash the team has for 2025. That’s huge.

  13. Mark Moore

A couple good defensive plays there … but let’s hope Frankie is okay. Cowboy thinks he won’t be.

And out he comes … KRAP!!!

  14. CI3J

Sincerely hope it’s just a deep bruise and not shattered bone.

  15. Mauired

Good to see Stephenson (DH) in lineup even in day after night. He’s been hitting the ball hard for awhile but rockets right at people. The last couple nights the rockets at people were in the stands.

  16. DW

And Martinez got used up yesterday. Dang.

  17. Ronnie

Let’s hope not long term. Williamson is available i think.

    • DW

Williamson hasn’t even gone on a rehab assignment yet, so unfortunately, he is not ready. Spiers, Phillips, Richardson, or Kennedy

      • Ronnie

Could put martinez back in rotation too.

      • DW

Good point Ronnie. I think that is the route I would go.

  18. Indy Red Man

What happened? Not on in Indy although I pulled up the free stream.
Won Frankie Under 5.5Ks bet, but not the way I wanted it to happen

    • Mauired

He got hit in the pitching arm with a 100mph comebacker

  19. Ronnie

Are we not allowed to mention a certain recent reds cy young winner on here? Suggested we sign him and comment is “awaiting moderator”

    • Mauired

He would need a month just to ramp up if signed today.

    • VaRedsFan

I agree. To blackball a guy like that when nothing ever came of it is a grave injustice.
People need to get off their proven incorrect, moral high ground.

    • Mark Moore

He’s pretty much “Voldemort” at this point. I think I’m fine with that approach.

      • stuckonthenorthshore

Well, with that approach, you should also fear the fictious character and just say ‘he whose name we must not say’

    • DW

Doug does not allow mention of him on here.

  20. Mauired

Martinez is probably the choice but not the answer. He was really bad in the rotation.

    • Ronnie

Yes. His best role is exactly what he did yesterday.

      • Tom Reeves

It’s beginning to look a lot like collusion, everywhere you go.

    • Mauired

Or there are 30 organizations that don’t think he is a role model for a family entertainment business that is a big part of the community.

Not saying I agree with him being blackballed but I understand why one of the best pitchers in the game in his prime can’t get a minor league contract.

He’s not a victim. He’s just not a good guy.

      • Ronnie

Sports are filled with “not good guys”. As long as they win nobody cares. Kobe Bryant has reached sainthood status despite his checkered past. Tiger Woods. Ray lewis. Ben roethlisburger. The list goes on .

  21. Stanley Macdonald

    What happened to Frankie?

  22. Indy Red Man

I was just looking up our “prospects” this morning. Connor Phillips, Lyon Richardson, and Chase Petty have all been horrible so far

    • Tom Mitsoff

Martinez could fit back into the rotation if needed.

  23. Tom Mitsoff

How has anyone gotten a hit off Soriano this year?

    • VaRedsFan

It looks like he’s capable of never giving up a hit.

    • Mauired

Yeah and after two tommy john surgeries as well. Crazy

  24. Optimist

A long absence, of course, would be terrible, but they have better emergency callups in AAA than last season. Not counting Abbott as a callup last season since he arguably became they’re TOR starter, but just thinking of the others if they need one or two starts/long relief arms.

    • VaRedsFan

Which ones are you talking about…because from the ones that I thought were there, are crapping the bed.

      • Mauired

I’m having trouble seeing these options too. Best one was supposed to be Connor Phillips. He can’t get out of the second inning in Louisville. I think he has more walks than innings pitched

      • Indy Red Man

Funny one is Richardson. Somehow he’s allowed 15 hits and 15 walks in 12.2 innings and yet has a respectable 4.26 era. How is that possible?
He must be stranding people like United Airlines

      • Mauired

Must be getting a lot of ground ball double plays

      • greenmtred

Now I know at least one airline to avoid.

      • Mauired

I went to Africa with my wife a few years ago. We used United points and got a ticket with their partners. We were supposed to have a connection in Israel on the way back but when we arrived in Ethiopia the airline informed us that we could not fly to Israel on a connecting flight due to their COVID restrictions. Fortunately the other airline rebooked our tickets and got us back to the states. But yeah United did their best to strand us in Ethiopia lol.

      • Optimist

I’m only talking one or two starts – all of those guys obviously need to sort it out in AAA before moving up full-time, but any one of them is liable to give the Reds a fill-in if needed. Recall this time last season and where they were headed with the rotation thru May and into June – not good.

  25. Reddawg2012

Good things are not meant for the Cincinnati Reds.

  26. Stanley Macdonald

Ok I saw the replay on Reds website guess we wait for an update. Lets go long relievers win this bullpen game!

  27. Erik the Red

Not a good game to use up the bullpen when you have the next 4 games against real hitting lineup like the Phillies. I assume Martinez will have to get back to starting if Frankie is out for a few starts.

  28. Indy Red Man

I actually think Trout is taking away from his legacy by not demanding a trade. These guys are mostly scrubs. Angels are going to lose atleast 85

    • Mauired

He should go to his Phillies and win a ring with Harper

    • Daytonnati

Had a similar conversation with a friend yesterday about this. Reminds me of Joey tolerating those awful Reds teams, post his peak.

  29. Mark Moore

Guys back Suter up defensively in this patchwork game. Now to figure out how to HIT AND SCORE on what looks like a miserable day.

  30. Mauired

Martinez is unavailable today for sure. means a not so healthy dose of Farmer coming soon

    • VaRedsFan

      Hopefully Suter can do 4.
Pagan and Wilson are probably the next guys up.

  31. Mauired

Suter might be the best pickup of the off-season

    • greenmtred

He is looking good, and thank goodness for that.

  32. Mark Moore

I’m as concerned about the 4-game series with Philly as anything else. Starters are covered, but a lot depends on how deep Suter can go today. We can call up a starter to replace Frankie if his injury is severe enough, but I hate to see us playing the Bullpen Shuffle already this season. That rarely works out well.

  33. Mark Moore

    3-6-3 Bike Helmets!!!

    Nicely done, guys.

  34. GreatRedLegsFan

The guy may be struggling at the plate, but certainly he isn’t on the defensive side.

  35. Mark Moore

How many ways are there to score from 3rd base (sac fly not in the mix this time)?

  36. Mauired

These guys need to learn how to give Ellie some more time to steal a base. They moved them over to third on two ground balls but if you had one steal in the meantime he’d be at home already

  37. Indy Red Man

Love Elly but why try to steal 3rd with nobody out yesterday yet today he doesn’t run when maybe we could’ve stole a run off a guy throwing bullets? You know Strands alot isn’t driving him in

    • VaRedsFan

      Martini swung at 1st pitch?

I think we want him to get a good jump, which he didn’t get yesterday. Couldn’t time Soriano, who was quick to the plate.

  38. Hanawi

Reds needed to bring in another starting outfielder in the offseason. Maybe they thought Dunn or Hurtubise could fill in, but seems clear to me that Benson is more of a 4th or 5th OF than an everyday starter.

    • Mauired

Benson had a terrible April last year too. Maybe he’s a slow starter.

      • Mauired

He actually has a respectable ops despite the slow start

    • Indy Red Man

Don’t agree. Benson is very talented. CES is starting to grate on me though, but its April

      • VaRedsFan

He had 8 hits in 6 games before the illness.
        He’ll be fine.

      • Ronnie

Benson still really young. Would love to see him develop into everyday player and be productive.

      • Tom Reeves

As long as he grates on you with 2-run doubles all season, I’ll be happy.

  39. Mauired

Suter comes in with two out and the 1st and gets Reds to the 5th and keeps the Angels score zero. Small miracle

  40. LDS

I guess reverse splits matter. Who knew? Still hitless.

    • Mauired

Don’t ever question Bell, mere mortal!

    • Tom Diesman

      Cardinals fans are cute! #HHJC

  41. Mark Moore

Candy lays off that knuckle curve and lets it hit his foot. That’s a good start to the inning.

Maybe Soriano is starting to lose focus.

  42. Indy Red Man

Astros blew 2 run lead in the 9th yesterday and now it looks like they’re staring at
7-16. Wonder if they might go firesale mode if things continue?

    • Mauired

Who’s for sale? I briefly looked at Abreu but then saw his career ended two years ago but nobody told him (or Astros)

    • Mark Moore

To Thrall and Cowboy’s point, Soriano isn’t an easy pitcher to bunt against. The one he let go at the start was probably the best one to bunt.

  43. Mark Moore

Just find one to drive to RF, Luke. Simple ask … right? 😮

  44. VaRedsFan

ESPY-nal looked like he’s never bunted in his life.

  45. Reddawg2012

    Thanks for the help, Santiago.

This is the hard part of all the injuries. Coming into the season, we were no longer supposed to be depending on guys like Santiago Espinal to come through in big spots.

  46. Indy Red Man

Espinal. Jockey sized middle infielder and yet he can’t bunt. Starting to dislike him. What does he bring to this team?

    • Reddawg2012

He’s just a warm body to fill an open spot. Similar to Bubba Thompson.

      • Mauired

Just a warm body making 3 mil. Must be nice

    • GreatRedLegsFan

Espinal and Thompson very little, I guess there should be someone better in the minors.

      • greenmtred

Espinal isn’t doing much so far, but for his career he’s hitting .267, OBP over .320. Not terrible.

    • LT

Reds only bring in players who can’t bunt. They fit the culture perfectly.

  47. Optimist

We may well see Livan Soto before next weekend.

  48. Mark A Verticchio

If he gets the bunt down with the infield in that might have been a hit.

  49. LT

Look like we’re gonna have to win with pitching today. Too much to ask offense to score a run when there are 2 on base and no one out.

  50. Mark Moore

Nice start to the Bike Helmets from Candy there. Made it the long way around and erased Ward’s hit.

    • Mark Moore

104 on that swat at Candy.

Pagan takes down Drury and does his part.

  51. Indy Red Man

Candy is playing a really nice 3B for us this year!

  52. Indy Red Man

Had to find my boy Josh VanMeter. Has a .870 ops at AAA Scranton. Espinal couldn’t do .870 at AAA right now.

  53. greenmtred

Montas with a bruise. No break according to the x-rays

    • Mark Moore

Yeah … but Friedl’s break didn’t show up initially either. That’s the problem with the first x-ray where there is swelling.

  54. AllTheHype

Benson and CES are chasing everything right now. At least one of those guys need to figure things out.

  55. Mauired

Of course Elle breaks up the No-No

  56. Mark Moore

Watching CES right now is just plain painful 😮

  57. Mauired

Reds starting pitcher knocked out in 1st inning.

Reds offense gets no hit till sixth inning.

    Reds winning.

    Baseball’s a funny game.

    • AllTheHype

Reds offseason pickups Martinez, Suter, Pagan 8.1 IP, 0 Runs last 2 games.

  58. Mark Moore

Nice way to avoid the tag by Martini!!! CES delivers (finally).

    • Mark Moore

I wasn’t a “doubter” long-term, but it has been frustrating to watch him again today … until THAT HAPPENED!! 😛

  59. RedsGettingBetter

The power of CES! capitalizes the LAA error

  60. Mark Moore

And Candy adds a triple to the mix. That has to be it for Soriano today.

    • Mark Moore

Thrall saying both of those hits were at 106.8 mph

    • Melvin

Big hit. 🙂 I thought Trout might be hurt there for a second.

  61. Indy Red Man

Wow. 2 out error opened the door and we took advantage. Thats what good teams do!

  62. Reddawg2012

“It’s been a barrage of blistered baseballs.” Classic Sadak haha

    • Mark Moore

      Not quite sure 2 = “a barrage”

      But we’ll take the results.

      • Tom Diesman

4 100+ MPH batted balls that inning

  63. Old-school

    Cruz sims and Diaz????

    Buckle up

One of these relievers wont have it

Maybe Cruz says its my turn

  64. Melvin

Of course a leadoff walk. Dennis will be proud. 🙂

  65. Mark Moore

Good throw by Benson to keep the runner at 2nd.

Now we need the Bike Helmet play.

  66. Mark Moore

Cruz wasn’t as tight as Friday, but he was tight enough on that one. Keep the line moving against the pen, boys!

  67. LarkinPhillips

Such a small thing, but great job by Fairchild to throw to second not third on that fly ball for second out. Too often we have seen the throw go to third and both runners score on a week single after. Those things matter.

    Cruz great job again.

  68. Mauired

Strange that Espinal has only 18 steals in 360 career games?

    • Mauired

I guess we can add base stealing to hitting as another thing he can’t do

      • Mauired

He just sat on 1st for two batters. Went 1st to 3rd on Elly’s hit. Just needed to steal second and would have scored on the hit.

  69. Old-school

I would start pre- medicating for lucas sims 8th inning now

    Tums pepto whatever u got

Sims could be ricky karcher vaughn or Rob Dibble or all 4

  70. Mark A Verticchio

Most of these hitters are really not hitting at all that has to end.

  71. Mark Moore

Nice hit by Elly. Have to think he’ll take 2nd without a throw now.

  72. Melvin

I give Bell credit for finally moving EDLC up in the order.

  73. Mark Moore

Thaiss never too his eyes off that one.

  74. Mark Moore

Uh … Lucas … when they say “eye level waste pitch” they don’t mean up around his head. But you got the Trout out, so that’s a good thing.

  75. Mauired

If Sims is the set-up man all year we’re in trouble

    • Mauired

Career 4.63 era. What was Krall thinking?

  76. Mark Moore

Squeezed and then not even close. Talk about waste pitches.

  77. Mark Moore

That’ll do … another run or 3 would be nice.

  78. VaRedsFan

We survived Sims 8th inning T- Shirt sales are going up.
He made a lot of good pitches that inning.

  79. RedsGettingBetter

Sims on 29 pitches thanks to the ump … I’m thinking Greene should prepare to throw about 150 pitches tomorrow trying to cover 7 frames at least… Only Wilson and Farmer seems to be available…

    • Mark Moore

Well, the Chumpire and his multiple “waste pitches” that didn’t entice anybody to swing at them.

  80. Mark Moore

Buckle up Cupcake. It’s Diaz time. And it’s a cool, cloudy afternoon.

  81. VaRedsFan

Can Diaz look as good as yesterday?

  82. Mark Moore

It comes down to the Moniak … Moniak (with the bat) …

    Waste him Diaz!

  83. Mark Moore

    And … EXHALE!!

Shutout sweep with 8.1 BP innings isn’t how any of us would have drawn it up, but we’ll take it.

  84. Melvin

Big day for bullpen and good to see Diaz looking better. Good win.

  85. VaRedsFan

Yeoman’s work by the pen today…led by Suter.

  86. Hanawi

Hasn’t necessarily been pretty, but Diaz has been pretty good since that first game against Washington.

  87. Mauired

Nice sweep…but Angels are basically White Sox with Mike Trout. If Reds can’t at least split with Philly I’ll be impressed.

  88. Jason T.

Great win. Bullpen did their thing. Huge.
Candelario 2 hits and CES with some solid D as usual and a clutch double.
Feels good to get that sweep.
