The Cincinnati Reds are coming off of road trip of extremes. They swept the White Sox in Chicago, but they then headed out to Seattle and got swept by the Mariners. After an off-day on Thursday, the Reds return home to host the Los Angeles Angels for a 3-game weekend series. First pitch is scheduled for 6:40pm ET.

Nick Lodolo

Things went about as well as possible for Nick Lodolo in his return to the big league mound in 11 months when he made his season debut last week and struck out 10 batters in 5.2 shutout innings. He’ll look to replicate that on Friday night against Mike Trout and the Angels.

In his career, teams have given Lodolo very few opportunities to face left-handed hitters. And it’s for good reason – even the best of the best who get to stay in the lineup when he’s on the mound have been embarrassingly bad. Teams have stacked their lineups with right-handed hitters against him and they’ve been pretty good across the board against him, hitting for a good average, getting on base quite often, and showing a solid amount of power.

Tyler Anderson

We need to start this out by acknowledging that Tyler Anderson’s nickname is Mr. Duck. I don’t want to know why but I want you to know.

This season teams haven’t sent many left-handed hitters to the plate against Anderson, but lefties that did get the chance to face him have done better than righties. And that was the same thing last season, too, as left-handed hitters put up an .869 OPS against him in 2023 with nearly as many walks as strikeouts. Right-handed hitters in 2023 were solid across the board, hitting .266/.336/.447 against him. His home/road splits were big, too. On the road last season his ERA was 5.93 and opponents had an OPS 92 points higher.

News and Notes

Reds acquire Livan Soto from Baltimore

Cincinnati picked up infielder Livan Soto on a waiver claim from Baltimore this afternoon. They optioned him to Triple-A Louisville and moved Tejay Antone to the 60-day injured list in order to create a spot on the 40-man roster for him. You can read more about Soto in our piece from earlier today about the acquisition.

Reds still sick

Ian Gibaut returned from rehab

The Reds announced earlier today that right-handed reliever Ian Gibaut was called back from his rehab assignment after experiencing some forearm discomfort after his most recent outing with Triple-A Louisville.

Prospect Cam Collier homers twice

It’s been an outstanding start to 2024 for the Reds 2022 1st round pick Cam Collier. On Thursday night in Dayton the left-handed hitting third baseman crushed two home runs as a part of a 3-hit night for the Dragons. Both of his home runs came off of a lefty. We’ve got video and a bunch more fun bits of information on Collier over at if you wanted to take a look at that kind of thing.

If you haven’t seen Miguel Sano lately, guy looks like he’s dropped 60 pounds. Still striking out a ton, but dude can hit them. I’ve followed him since seeing him, Mauer, Buxton, Polanco, Rosario, Span, Dozier, Morneau, Cuddyer, Lew Ford, Jacques Jones, etc in New Britain, CT with the Twinsies. Even Big Papi himself. Minnesota had a great, great farm system. And Beehive Stadium, old and new.

  2. Jon

Does the Covid IL still exist? You’d think Krall could figure out a way to stick the ill players on it to enable him to bring up some replacements from Louisville. Even if it’s only a stomach bug, isn’t that a Covid symptom for some people?

    • Tom Reeves

The team has a PCR test machine that can tell almost instantly if someone has Covid.

  3. LarkinPhillips

This pitcher is our worst nightmare. A left hander who throws primarily changeups. Expect a lot of rollover grounders tonight. I hope I am wrong. We need a bounce back night.

    • DW

So true, but hopefully they can break that trend.

  4. JB WV

Latest line: cincy -140. Fraley starting against a lefty. Go reds

  5. Bet on Red

anyone else hear about rendons comments about phoning it in

  6. Indy Red Man

So this umps going to add 4 inches to the outside corner and make up his zone. One more time and I’ll find something else to do. Tired of their bovine droppings

  7. VaRedsFan

Bell favorite Hunter Strickland throws for LA now.
He blew a 2 run lead 2 days ago and got the win.
    Oldtimer would be proud.

    • JB

Somehow he will get in against us and dominate.

    • JB

20 pitches. At this rate he can go 11 innings.

    • Jason T.

He’s looking like the ace we really need him to be.

  8. VaRedsFan

Hitters need to make a conscious effort to hit the ball the other way against this soft tossing lefty.

    • Jason T.

Was thinking the same thing. After the Seattle flop we need to get on base any way we can.

  9. Jason T.

Nice one Elly! He’s so fun on base.

  10. VaRedsFan

    Elly creates the run himself.
SB and home on the bad throw

  11. JB

Espinal with the 30 mph ground ball. Where have you gone Kevin Newman.

  12. KYRedsfan

I truly enjoy Elly Ball! So dangerous on the base path!

  13. JB

This ump sucks. He is missing a lot and it’s only the third inning.

    • Mark Moore

He’s all over the map and changes his zone seemingly at random, even within the same AB.

  14. VaRedsFan

Forever I keep wanting Tyler to throw to 2nd and seek contact…it’s automatic interference. Welsh has said it at least a half dozen times. Where are the coaches on this?

    • Mark Moore

Didn’t get called at Seattle. Bell got about as animated as we’d expect (and nothing changed the call).

      • VaRedsFan

All Ty has to do is make contact on the throw.
There was no contact, as he didn’t attempt the throw. Or other times he goes out of his way to avoid contact.

  15. Mark Moore

Watching on silent (on my phone) while we eat dinner and watch Jeopardy. Nice heads-up by our LF’er playing 1B to nail that guy trying to sneak a run. Elly was electric during his AB.

But what in the heck is up with tonight’s chumpire? He varies between innings, batters, AND pitches during the same AB!!!! 😮 😮

    • Mark Moore

Didn’t get called at Seattle. Bell got about as animated as we’d expect (and nothing changed the call).

      • Mark Moore

        Wrong thread … 😛

        India breaks his streak

  16. VaRedsFan

    Spencer Steer – baseball player.

  17. LuciusRuber

    Things I miss-
Mark starting the thread with “Its time to kick this pig”
Richard’s writing- a professional writer masking as an amateur
    Old Cossack and his insight

    • Mark Moore

I forgot I used to do that. I’ll try to remember and use that phrase. Thanks for the shout out.

I also miss the Old Cossak’s commentary.

      • LuciusRuber

I’ll expect every game-it is a staple here
        what’s for dinner?

      • Mark Moore

I had an errand to run, so I picked up burgers from a local joint. Almost as good as I can make on my griddle. They do killer fries which we then re-crisp in a 400-degree oven.

Breakfast scramble on tap for tomorrow morning. Peppers (yellow bell, jalepeno), red onion, and bacon.

    • Mark Moore

And a +500 if you can tell me where that line comes from (movie).

      • LuciusRuber

        down periscope-thank you Google

  18. Mark Moore

OK, that works. Keeps the runs at zero and conserve’s Lodolo’s pitch count. After Seattle, I’ll take it any way we can get it.

  19. Mark Moore

Elly’s doing better at grabbing the bag. I like that. Maybe the new oven mitt has a hook on it? 😀

    • VaRedsFan

Noticed that too. He just had to start his slide earlier to avoid oversliding. He now needs to give a clinic to his teammates on how to slide.

  20. RedsGettingBetter

This offense is really hurt by the injuries so it is harmless since Monday

    • Mark Moore

Wasn’t exactly striking fear in the hearts of the opposition before … definitely not now.

  21. VaRedsFan

Friedl to start rehab assignment in about 10 days.
Does that mean start baseball activities, or start playing minor league games?

    • Mark Moore

I believe “rehab assignment” means he’s with one of the clubs doing actual baseball activity. Couldn’t come soon enough (but don’t rush it, please)!

      • JB

Yeah hurry back but don’t hurry back. The Reds just got to hang on in this weak division.

  22. Mark Moore

Lodolo still dealing. Kind of a “hard luck” run charged against him in my book. Still a very good pitch count.

Let’s back him, boys. Somebody wake up Jobu and give him a shot of something to get him going.

  23. Mark Moore

    Benson is JUUUUST missing those.

  24. LuciusRuber

I did not like the black uniforms-I like the early 70’s the best (button down jersey)
but they’re not bad-have an 1800’s feel to them-maybe the strip on the helmut and pants makes the impression

    • JB

I like the way McLain wears them. He pulls the pants up to the knees and shows the red stirrups

    • Mark Moore

I’m actually a fan. I bought a t-shirt and the hat. Wore them at Nationals Park last July. Thinking I need to figure out a weekend trip up there again when they start the second half of the season in DC.

    • VaRedsFan

I like the jerseys. Not a fan of the hats.

  25. Mark Moore

Right idea, Jon. Way better than whiffing.

  26. RedsGettingBetter

I feel something bad with this game hope just a matter of things of mine

    • Mark Moore

At least he didn’t try to make a “hero throw”

    • Melvin

Personally I’d rather have Barrero but too late for that.

  27. Mark Moore

That was unfortunate on multiple levels. Glad we got that 2nd out.

  28. Indy Red Man

Julia Roberts married Lyle Lovett, but then quickly realized she couldn’t wake up to that ugly mug every morning and got a quick divorce. Reds-Espinal same thing please

    • Mark Moore

Yeah … if his “glove first” billing isn’t true, there are other options. We dumped a bigger mistake in Will Meyers last year.

    • VaRedsFan

The are stuck with him, because every option behind him is worse.
Trading is forbidden before July. (apparently)
So they are dead until Marte gets back.

  29. Mark Moore

Nice job by TySteve on that quick field and throw.

  30. RedsGettingBetter

Espinal if you are horrible at the offese so you have to be really good defensively… Sheesss..

  31. JB

I’m not sure you can win a game with 2 hits. Might want to get the boys going Bell.

  32. Mark Moore

Somebody really needs to hammer one!!

      • Mark Moore

111 mph exit is the highest of his career to date

  33. JB

Stephenson is coming around. Had some bad luck but not that one.

    • VaRedsFan

He’s barreling up a lot of balls lately.
      Finally a good result.

  34. Melvin

Stephenson finally got one “to fall”. 🙂

  35. Mark Moore

On the big screen with audio now. Thinking I need to switch the audio. I’ve done my penance with the last few games. Time to go back to Thrall even if it’s delayed a bit.

    • Mark Moore

WLW audio is actually just a tiny bit ahead. That works for me.

Nice lead out on that one. Elly did an incredible job.

  36. Mike W

    Yeah Tyler!
He and Steer have been hitting it so hard and had nothing to show for it — until now. Wow, 111 mph! Congrats.

  37. VaRedsFan

India and Elly made a great play there to get 1

  38. Mark Moore

Would have loved to see Lodolo finish the 7th, but I can’t disagree with this call by Bell. And if we get the customary firs BB, then it sets up Bike Helmets to finish the inning … amIright?

  39. VaRedsFan

Cruz needs a K….Ty needs to block these pitches.
    Awesome start by Nick L.

  40. Mark Moore

TySteve needs to be very aware with a runner on 3rd and Cruz tossing his crazy stuff.

  41. JB

Cruz has a tough time when there is a guy on 3rd. He is afraid of spiking that splitter

  42. Mark Moore

Cowboy: “Evidently he didn’t know THAT was coming!”

  43. Mark Moore

    That was 100% NASTY!!!

Line from “Time Bandits” … “Dad! Don’t look at it; it’s PURE EVIL!”

  44. RedsGettingBetter

Very nice pitches by Cruz… held off LAA

  45. AMDG

Hopefully the Reds can get some more runs before the 9th.

I’m not confident giving Diaz only a 1 run lead to protect.

  46. VaRedsFan

Let’s all take a moment to give Bell a golf clap for being aware and lifting Lodolo and using Cruz in that situation. Even if it wouldn’t have worked

    • Mark Moore

Yep. I’m a pretty harsh critic most of the time, but that was exactly the right timing. And it worked out very well.

    • Roger Garrett

Cruz has swing and miss stuff and he was the right guy even if as you said if it didn’t work.

    • Melvin

I’ll agree. Can’t complain about that move. He was “on the ball” with that particular in game management strategy.

    • Mark Moore

And a quick one. 6:40 start and we’re now in the T-8.

  47. Reddawg2012

Lucas Sims has looked rough his last two outings. Hopefully that’s out of his system.

  48. Mark Moore

    Sims???? Really????

Hope it works. It just makes me VERY nervous given it’s their best hitters.

    • Jason T.

Thought the same thing. Starts off 0-2 and bam, walk. Ridiculous.

  49. Mark Moore

Better a busted mitt with nobody on than last inning.

  50. Mark Moore

That was a strike several times earlier in the game.

  51. JB

Haha that’s a strike the whole game and now the chump doesn’t call it

  52. Mark Moore

Trout a little anxious on that one. Now get past Ward.

  53. VaRedsFan

    From 0-2.
    3 balls nowhere near.
Ball 4…which was at least close

  54. Mark Moore

OK, Sims. Get Sano and hand it over.

  55. VaRedsFan

    I’m selling shirts..
I survived Sims in the 8th.

  56. Old-school

Gonna lodolo cruz sims and Diaz

Need an add – on run

  57. Mark Moore

    OK … everybody breathe … 😮

Good news is, that burns their first 4 hitters for the 9th. Need a couple of insurance runs here. A boatload would be greatly appreciated.

    • Magi210

Wish granted. Nice to see someone else get the bullpen implosion.

  58. Ronnie

We need an insurance run bad. Cruz is the mvp of the game if we hold on.

  59. Mark Moore

    Spence Steer, Professional Situational Hitter

  60. JB

What was that? Was that what they call a bunt?

  61. Mark Moore

Nice job, Stewie. You made them make a good field and throw.

    • Mark Moore

That one was as much on O’Hoppe as the Chumpire.

  62. Mark Moore

Free pass to TySteve thanks to that poorly set pitch for ball 3.

  63. JB

Angels announcers are talking about Elly and why on earth is that guy batting 6th?

    • Harry Stoner

I guess they didn’t see him bat cleanup last year.

Let him ease back into that spot.

  64. Mark Moore

Anything but a K or a ground ball here, Nick.

    HBP works as well.

  65. VaRedsFan

No way should Washington have left Cimber in to face the lefty Martini.
    Was gonna Bell

  66. Mark Moore

Oppo shot to blow it open. Elly has to love it. I know I do.

    • Melvin

That’s going to help my fantasy baseball tonight. 🙂

  67. KYRedsfan

Love me some Elly Ball! Go Reds!

  68. VaRedsFan

True extension by Elly…let the ball travel (credit to Larkin)
    Beautiful swing.

  69. Mark Moore

We needed a game like this to start the homestand.

  70. Indy Red Man

Think I’ve been more lucky then good, but cashed Martini RBI +227. Batting 5th nice value. Up 2 car payments and we’re still in April

    • Mark Moore

Just remember, if you ever think you may have a gambling problem, call 1-800-OHTANI for help

  71. Melvin

EDLC could be on the All Star team this year if he keeps this up.

  72. Mark Moore

2:10 and we’re in the 9th. Time for Farmer to settle in and finish this.

  73. Mark Moore

Anybody want to lobby for Day to get both Lodolo and Elly after the game? With Cruz as an honorable mention …

  74. Mark Moore

    That’ll do, Buck … that’ll do.

  75. JB

How come we can’t have 2 hours games on the west coast?

    • Mark Moore

And that’s with our pretty long B-8th thrown in there. 2:14 I believe.

  76. VaRedsFan

A near flawless game by the boys tonight.
    Let’s do it again tomorrow.

  77. Harry Stoner

Okay, so what if he really is everything that everyone wants him to be?

    • Mark Moore

It seems to be possible. He’s definitely improving on multiple fronts from what I can see.

    • Daytonnati

If so, enjoy him for the next five years, then he becomes a billionaire 🙂

  78. Harry Stoner

    Cruz likely getting mobbed.

    That was epic.

We haven’t seen enough of that.

    • Harry Stoner

      As in Fernando C.

      I’ve already touted EDL

  79. Harry Stoner

    As in Fernando C.

    I’ve already touted EDL

    • Harry Stoner

      Sorry for the dupe!

Fun game at the end of a long week.
