Graham Ashcraft

After a nice season debut, Ashcraft struggled a little bit last time out – but he was pitching with a big lead until the end of his outing when things got away from him a bit.

This season left-handed hitters have crushed Ashcraft. Right-handed hitters have done next to nothing against him so far this year. But the sample size here is small. Last year Ashcraft was better against lefties than righties, with right-handed hitters holding an OPS 103 points higher than left-handed hitters.

Michael Soroka

The start of 2024 hasn’t gone well for the White Sox and it hasn’t gone well for Michael Soroka. On April 4th he allowed two runs in 6.0 innings against the Royals, but he gave up four runs in 5.0 innings in his first start with three walks and his last time out he gave up four runs in 3.2 innings with three walks against Cleveland. He’s allowed a homer in each of his three starts and is not striking out anyone.

This season both righties and lefties have performed well against him. Left-handed hitters, though, have walked twice as often as they’ve struck out against him and half of their hits have been for extra-bases. Right-handed hitters haven’t walked against him yet, but they are making tons of contact and hitting well.

News and Notes

Ian Gibaut’s Rehab

Last night saw Ian Gibaut make a rehab appearance for Triple-A Louisville. He gave up two runs on a hit and a hit batter in an inning of work. He struck out a batter, threw 18 pitches with 13 strikes. His fastball was 93.5-94.7 MPH on the night.

Updated Rotation

With the team skipping Nick Martinez when his start was rained out, there was some question about how the rotation would play out after that. Charlie Goldsmith of the Cincinnati Enquirer is reporting that the next three starts will go to Frankie Montas, Hunter Greene, and Andrew Abbott. After that has not yet been announced, but Martinez isn’t in that group and would be on normal rest.

Martinez really needs to go to the bullpen. He seems to struggle if he has to go through a lineup more than once.

A six-man rotation doesn’t make any sense. It would just further weaken an already weak bullpen.

    • JB WV

Agree and I think that’s what the reds had in mind when they signed him. Hopefully he’ll excel coming out of the pen.
Love the order of the lineup today, especially Steer at cleanup.

    • Optimist

Wonder if they’re considering Lodolo and Martinez as the combined 5th starter – 80-90 pitch limits to each should get into the 8th inning if each is going fairly well. May preserve Lodolo in the long run, and retain Martinez as the 5th starter if someone else is out. Would avoid calling up Phillips or Richardson, and give Williamson more time before he returns.

    • Oldtimer

The 1975 and 1976 Reds both had six man SP rotations. How did that work out?

      • CI3J

Oldtimer, you know as well as I do that starters went much deeper into games and the bullpen wasn’t as important in 1975 and 1976.

The game has changed significantly since then.

      • Harry Stoner

Fifty years ago, they probably weren’t the same pitchers the Reds have now.

Fifty years before that, pitchers sometimes pitched both games of a double header.

    • Ted Alfred

Yep. Martinez needs to go to the pen now…not later.

On a more positive note, Steer hitting #4 , Candelario #7 is an improvement. Things can change, but for now viewing the Reds through the lens of what is actually happening on the field it’s a no-brainer.

  2. Mark A Verticchio

Bell putting out as good of a line up as he can today, I hope I am not jinxing them. Big game because any sweep is a big deal no matter the opponent, I just wish the Orioles would win a game vs the Brewers, man are they playing well.

    • Dennis Westrick

Glad to see Steer in the cleanup spot!

    • CI3J

      Agree.

I still wouldn’t call this the optimal lineup (I’d swap EDLC and CES), but it’s MUCH better than what he has been putting out there.

      Hope he sticks with it.

      • Dennis Westrick

It is one of Bell’s better “getaway day” lineups! Maybe Bell ran out of participation trophies?

    • JayTheRed

I am surprised by the line-up I thought we were going to get the Sunday special today.
This might be the best lineup of the year so far.

  3. Dennis Westrick

OK, Reds! It’s not 1919! The White Sox are not going to throw this game today! Let’s complete the 3-game sweep!

  4. MBS

I’m hoping we go with a 6 man rotation because we have so many guys who are big question marks of being able to go 30 starts in a season. Plus once Williamson gets back, there is no justification of letting him stew down in AAA.

  5. VaRedsFan

I wouldn’t read too much into it.

They didn’t announce a Martinez decision, because they wanted to see how Lodolo recovers from his start. If all is good, he will most likely slip back into the bullpen. If Lodolo is slow to recover, Nick M can slide in to give Nick some extra recovery time.

  6. Mauired

Six man rotation makes alot of sense if you want to keep them healthy. Lodolo, Montas, Greene, and Ashcraft all missed significant time last year from injury. All on innings limits but being counted on to not only stay healthy all year but hopefully well into October as well. I’m not sold on Nick Martinez as the sixth man though but maybe he could hold down the fort until Williamson returns.

  7. LDS

Regarding Martinez, it’s likely that Montas, Abbott, and Lodolo are capable of regularly getting into the 6th or later. Ashcraft, perhaps as well. Greene on the other hand, still comes and goes. Martinez to long relief makes a lot of sense and use him 3-4 innings depending on how the game is going. Just none of the one and done nonsense that Bell typically employs. It’s a sure recipe for wearing down the bullpen, as past years have shown.

  8. Indy Red Man

I kind of forgot about Williamson. I think he can do the same thing Suter does and maybe spot starter. I also saw where Gibaut is struggling at Louisville.
I’m happy Bell adjusted the lineup, but saw where Benson is hitting .139 in April

    • Mauired

Yeah he is struggling and ironically it’s more in the 2 spot against the rightys. I don’t want to nitpick the lineup. Happy Steer has moved up and Candy down. That was the main concern. Benson does have some nice speed and onbase skills but I don’t really see him at the top of the lineup. When everyone including myself wanted him out of the nine spot, I think most people were thinking 5 or 6 hole would be a good fit for him?

  9. Mark Moore

Starting with the Bally TV feed as I promised I would to do my part for “the streak”.

  10. Indy Red Man

Going to enjoy Steve Stone discuss the Reds today

    • JB

Watched him the whole series. I like him.

      • JB

Melvin- I always watch the visiting teams broadcast on MLB. I like to hear what they say about our team and you don’t get all the crap Sadak gives you. Stone loves Andrew Abbott and Lodolo. Curious to see what he says about Ashcraft. Both announcers drool over Steer and Elly.

      • Melvin

Yeah JB. Point is I can’t being where I’m located. 🙂

    • Mark Moore

Stone is a quality announcer. Haven’t heard him since WAY back. May have to switch my feed at some point (if I think I won’t jinx things).

  11. Mauired

I know the White Sox probably don’t want to celebrate the 1919 world series. But I thought it would be cool if at least the Reds brought out those World Series unis that they brought back in 2019 for the series.

  12. Mark Moore

As much as I dislike that 3rd out happening, I’m pretty happy with Elly deciding early to do something with it. He knew he would see that pitch, just didn’t square it up enough.

And love that Fraley hustle to make Elly’s bat possible.

  13. LarkinPhillips

CES really believes in swinging your way out of a slump. He is way to aggressive right now.

    • GreatRedLegsFan

Yes, he needs to relax and wait for better pitches…

  14. Mark Moore

That one was obviously for Dennis … 😮

  15. Mark Moore

Quick! Somebody get Ashcraft a map showing the strike zone!!!

    • Tom Reeves

Hey, Angel Hernandez told him where the strike zone is and he’s listening.

      • Mark Moore

Oh brother … if ANYBODY is clueless about the strike zone, it’s Angel.

  16. Indy Red Man

Getting no downward bite. GA highest exit velocity in MLB…not good

  17. Mark Moore

    OK, now I can exhale.

And did Ashcraft end up striking out the side?

  18. Indy Red Man

Very lucky. Sheets hit the 3-1 112 mph foul. 0-2 to the last guy was right down the middle. All 3 strikes were absolute center cut

  19. Dennis Westrick

Good news -GA dodged a bullet! Bad news – 26 pitch 1st inning!

  20. GreatRedLegsFan

I don’t think Gibaut is returning to the ML roster, there’s just no room for him now. Furthermore, when Moll is activated, he’ll more likely replace Wilson in the bullpen.

    • JB

Moll hasn’t done anything at AAA either. His 10 ERA right now doesn’t scream bring him up. I’m hoping the Reds play the earn it card this year. They have alot of pitching and don’t need to bring up pitchers just for the sake of it.

      • GreatRedLegsFan

The thing is there’s a limit for rehab assignments, not sure when his ends, and has only one option left.

  21. Mark Moore

Cracked bat flair that I thought was going to be caught … happy to be wrong about that.

    Sunday afternoon Martini, anyone? (Nope)

  22. VaRedsFan

    Candy…7 hole hitter extraordinaire.

  23. Indy Red Man

Candy atleast hits the ball all over…when he hits it.

  24. JB

So we have gone from terrible defensively to catching everything hit. What the heck happened?

  25. Mauired

Sad to see the local kid Benintendi struggling so much. Looked like a future star with Red Sox now he maybe the worst contract in MLB.

  26. Dennis Westrick

Much better 2nd inning for GA!

  27. Mike W

He’s almost seen the light! In the last 3 games Bell has implemented 3 of the 5 recommendations I’ve made for weeks:
    1. He finally kept RPs in for 2 innings.
    2. He finally moved Steer up to 4th.
    3. He finally moved Candelario down to 7th.
    4. He should have put Elly in the 3rd hole (especially against a RH SP today!)
And he should have put CES in the 6th hole.
Come on Mr. Bell. Do ALL these things starting tomorrow and let them play that way for a few weeks.

    • Melvin

Obviously you’re someone he listens to. ;)….unlike the rest of us. 🙂

  28. Indy Red Man

Freidl is probably our best defender in CF, but he doesn’t get that ball

  29. VaRedsFan

Ashcraft looked better that inning with more movement. With the extra off days, it’s such a thing to be too strong. The more the game wears on, the more his stuff will start to move.

  30. Mauired

Gavin Sheets looks like a young Adam Dunn.

  31. Melvin

CES flexing the muscle on that HR. 🙂

    • Mauired

CES has some crazy bat speed. When he learns to be a little more selective, he’s going to be an elite hitter.

  32. Mark Moore

Maybe that little sequence has rattle Sroka a bit. Regardless, I like the results.

  33. Melvin

Steer doing his Joey Votto imitation these days with great hitting and OBP.

      • JB

It hurt my eyes to watch Joey on the bases.

      • Melvin

Well you couldn’t miss it that’s for sure. haha

  34. Melvin

At least no K and got the runners over by EDLC. 🙂

  35. Dennis Westrick

Every time I get down on CES he goes and does that!

  36. Dennis Westrick

Candy needs to go buy an Ohio lottery ticket!

  37. Mark Moore

Seeing Steer look back toward home on that steal, I’d swear that was a hit-and-run …

Meanwhile, we play some add-on and continue to build up Sroka’s pitch count.

    • Mark Moore

Then again, hit-and-run is against the rules now, isn’t it? (asking for a friend)

    • VaRedsFan

The jump was so big he was probably wondering if the catcher was even going to throw it.

  38. Old-school

    This is fun

Abbott and Lodolo showed maturity with early leads and didnt lose focus

See if Ashcraft can keep things rolling

Outfield defense spectacular this past week

    • Mark Moore

Outfield defense is a freaking highlight reel … 😮

  39. Mark Moore

To play on an old Chicago concept …

    Score early, score often!!

  40. Mark Moore

Another backwards K after taking the ChiSox hitter full …both of them looked to be in the zone.

Better pitch efficiency from Ashcraft there. That should help (if he can keep it up).

  41. Mark Moore

You just kinda knew Benson was running.

  42. Mark Moore

And we’re back to the Ashcraft of the first inning.

  43. Old-school

Benson a really nice game. Amazing catch in CF and 3 solid AB’s.

  44. Mike W

Does CES intensity remind anyone else of manny Ramirez? I think, like many of you have expressed, that CES is going to be a great hitter. Watches that ball like Rose, but hits it hard like Tony Perez often did.
    No……….. Jesus Fraley!!!!

  45. Melvin

Well. So much for good defense in the outfield. lol

  46. Indy Red Man

Candy better at 3b then advertised.

    Lol. Now I hope it’s only 4-2

    • Mauired

He is probably the best glove in Reds infield. And best 7 hole hitter hopefully.

  47. VaRedsFan

How is that called a hit?

With all the awful scoring decisions these days, and guys still can’t bat .300 anymore.

    • JB

No way? There’s no other way to paint that but an error

  48. Mark Moore

OK, Jake. You started to make up for that with the BB and making their catcher get crossed up.

    • Mauired

Strikezone has been upside down today. Balls outside of zone turn into strikouts. Balls in the zone turning into walks. It’s been bad on both sides.

      • Melvin

Eventual Robo umps may help increase offense. Hitters just don’t know what to expect.

  49. JB

Kind of stinks for Ashcraft. The ball four to Vaughn was a strike and a K. He comes around to score when Lee goes down and gets a single on a good pitch. Then Fraley does what he did on the pop up which would have ended the inning.

  50. Old-school

    Martini says handedness smandedness.

    Take that!

    • Roger Garrett

Shaken not stirred if you will.Big knock for sure.

  51. VaRedsFan

That’s a big hit for Martini and the team

    • JB

I like Martini on the team right now. He gives some pop to the team until somebody in the minors is ready. Although Capel hit his 6th today.

    • Mark Moore

I’ll have to go back and look at it … I was “indisposed” when he pulled that off.

  52. Mark Moore

Hoping Ashcraft can have a nice efficient inning and get a chance at the 6th. Starting 3-0 isn’t the best way to do that, though.

    • JB

Chicago station showed the stat that batters are hitting .467 the third time through vs Ashcraft. Ouch.

  53. Roger Garrett

Let’s get a DP right here and get back in the dugout.

    • Mark Moore

Ask and you shall receive, Roger.

  54. Mark Moore

Bike Helmets to get Graham out of the 5th and set him up for the 6th. Got to like that.

  55. VaRedsFan

Nice shutdown inning after the team just got 2 for Ashcraft.

  56. Indy Red Man

Liked Martinis short swing from day 1. We need him vs lefties too instead of the Bubba Thompson’s and Espinals

  57. Indy Red Man

Will Benson 8th highest ops NL since his recall last year. Ballys never gives u anything meaningful

    • Mauired

His april stats definitlely alot better after today.

  58. Dennis Westrick

Had to leave for a couple of innings to clean my pool filter, etc. Reds were up 4-0!
Much to my surprise, see where the leadoff hitter walked by GA in the bottom of the 4th scored. Amazing how that keeps happening! Thanks to Martini, the player, not the drink, got those 2 runs back!

Maybe one more inning for GA?

  59. Mark Moore

So India is on the schneid since he was hitless yesterday and again today … I say we trade him for a bag of BP balls.

    And Benson on base again.

  60. VaRedsFan

Happy to hear (via Sadak) that they are finally addressing pitch framing with Tyler Stephenson. I asked for it two years ago. Better late than never.

    • Mark Moore

League needs to address it via the robo-zone and take the variable Flex-o-Zone from the Chumpires out of the equation.

      • Mauired

They needed that years ago. Can’t wait for the system they already have in the minors of the ball strike challenge system. Much more fair than the terrible missed calls by the umps. One bad call in a one run game can decide it. And it happens alot.

  61. Mark Moore

That’s some kind of mojo Benson has going.

    • Mark Moore

That slide to the infield side may have cost him

      • Mark Moore

OK, good. And no challenge left from the ChiSox.

  62. Dennis Westrick

For the most part, the Reds defense (fielding & throwing) has been just short of awful this season! The Reds pitchers must hold their breath every time a ball is hit!

  63. Melvin

Boy the Whitesox are terrible handling base runners. lol

  64. AllTheHype

CES has a bad case of chasing out of the zone right now. He’s mostly an easy out unless he runs into one. Pitchers need not throw him much of anything in the zone. He’s gonna chase and opposing pitchers all know it.

  65. Indy Red Man

Benson thinking on the fly out there …mark of a winner

  66. Dennis Westrick

Going into today’s game, the Reds were 2nd in stolen bases in the NL and all of MLB!

    • Mauired

With Friedl and McLain, they would be 1st. Like last year.

  67. Mark Moore

Wonder how short the leash is on Ashcraft here. He has space on the pitch count. Needs to go right after these guys.

  68. Old-school

Love to see ashcraft put 6 innings on the board here. 98 mph not bad.

  69. Dennis Westrick

Could have used that run! Runner on 2nd base and less than 2 out situations are golden opportunities to extend a lead!

  70. Melvin

Our defense loses concentration too often. Candelario that time.

    • Mauired

He’s been pretty solid at 3rd overall. Fraley in the outfield too. Both plays should have been made but an occasional error is ok.

    • VaRedsFan

Unless the hometown scorer gives them a hit on an obvious error.

  71. Dennis Westrick

Hope Bell has someone up in the bullpen!

  72. Old-school

I sense some Lucas Sims excitement coming our way soon!

  73. Indy Red Man

Ashcraft hung in there, but way too many balls up today. Good to win without your best stuff

  74. Mark Moore

Good day for Ashcraft. Exiting before a full 6 innings is at least partly on him.

Only need that first batter out, Mr. Sims. Don’t screw around with him.

  75. Old-school

    White Sox go lefty/S/lefty 9/1/2/

Wilson probably warming up for the 7th.

  76. Old-school

Lucas Sims Ho hum dominant . Nice work.

  77. Mark Moore

A little exciting there … but the job is done.

Let’s add on a couple more for good measure, boys.

  78. VaRedsFan

No damage on the error called a hit. Good job by Ashcraft/Sims

  79. JB

Ashcraft only 1 earned run. I’ll take that all day and every day especially on Sunday.

  80. Old-school

Fraley Benson and Martini all with hits agaisnt a lefty today.

  81. Mark Moore

    Fraley 4 PA’s, 4x on base today.

  82. VaRedsFan

That will probably do it for Elly’s OB-Streak.
    Start a new one tomorrow.

      • Melvin

He may make it up again. We’re the visitors. 🙂

    • Melvin

The way things are going he may get up again this inning. 🙂

  83. Mauired

Is it a coincidence that Candelario gets his first multi-hit game as a Red the day he is moved out of cleanup?

    • Mauired

Ironic that Fraley scores the run on that drop. I bet he feels good.

  84. JB

Apparently catching the ball in right field is not a requirement today.

  85. Old-school

Martini another lefty on lefty hit.
Sun in RF a nightmare today. White Sox give one back to Fraley drop

  86. Bet on Red

the soxs are really bad, can we play them for all the remaining games lol

  87. Dennis Westrick

Again, a Martini is not my favorite mixed drink! But this Reds Martini is growing on me!

    • Harry Stoner

It ain’t over, ’til it’s over.

      • Harry Stoner

Hopefully, when it’s over….it’s all yours.
I’ve been a Reds fan for too long, to ever count my chickens.
        But I will mix metaphors.

    • VaRedsFan

      Timing is everything.
Later in the season they might be playing better…with Robert and Jimenez back.
Good to catch them when they are down.

  88. JB

Reds outfielders have walked 8 times today. Got to be some kind of record.

  89. Old-school

I empathize with White Sox Fans but as a Reds fan that endured some AWFUL starts and 3-18 with Price and 2022…I dont feel bad. Get your sweep, get one the plane and get the heck out of town!

    • Harry Stoner

      Completely agree.

      It wasn’t that long ago.

I remember it as a 3-41 start, but it could just be my memory playing tricks on me.

  90. Melvin

I don’t care if this is the Whitesox. Momentum is a very good thing. 🙂

    • LT

Formula to make playoffs: win games you’re supposed to win and steal some games you’re not supposed to win. Reds are on the right track.

  91. Dennis Westrick

Nine (9) more outs to go! Good news is that Milwaukee lost!

  92. RedlegScott

These guys (ChiSox) make last year’s A’s look like juggernauts. Feel sorry for their fans. Gonna be an exceptionally long year, it seems.

  93. Mark Moore

Watching that inning with my First Wife asking questions in my left ear about the 2023 taxes (kudos to her for catching something I missed … pretty big benefit to us).

And it’s only the 7th inning. Elly may get another shot at his on-base streak.

  94. Indy Red Man

Brewers finally lost. Pitt blew out Philly.
I don’t think Pitt fades like last year. Maybe like 79 wins or something, but they’re much better

  95. Mark Moore

Time to see if the extended bench time impacts Sims. So far not so good … 😮

  96. Melvin

I actually wish Steer hadn’t dove for that ball. We have enough injuries with a 10-2 lead.

  97. VaRedsFan

    Orioles finally beat Brew.
    Pirates keep winning.

  98. Mark Moore

Could really use Bike Helmets here for Wilson to start his outing.

    • Mark Moore

Definitely can NOT use a first pitch like that one.

  99. RedlegScott

These offensive numbers are great, but it’s difficult to measure the significance given the lack of quality of the pitchers we’re up against.

  100. MK

I wish Sadek would shut up, especially the philosophizing.

    • Mark Moore

One of the biggest reasons I struggle to listen to him call a game. His waxing philosophical and throwing in the 55-gallon drum full of different words (most of them unnecessarily more vague) just turns me off. At least with Welsh he’s a little less annoying. With Larkin’s silence, he just talks more.

  101. Harry Stoner

Reds bullpen preparing to cave in.

    • Melvin

What were you saying about being over? 😉

      • Harry Stoner

        No lead is ever safe.

The NYTimes once wrote about the “Reds historically bad bullpen…”

        It wasn’t an exaggeration.

  102. Dennis Westrick

Eight (8) run lead and Wilson walks a batter! Ridiculous!

    • Mark Moore

After throwing one to the backstop. And then he grooves one that almost gets hammered out of the park.

  103. Dennis Westrick

Make that two (2) walks! Get him OUT NOW!

  104. Dennis Westrick

Wilson is about to give a lesson in how to blow an eight (8) run lead!

  105. Mark Moore

So, I’m thinking when Moll progresses, he gets Wilson’s spot.

And I’m not hanging this on Bell at this point either. Seems Wilson just isn’t focused.

Glad he gets that K. Now Bike Helmets and limit the damage.

  106. Dennis Westrick

So, Bell, how many walks/runs before you make a pitching change?

  107. Mark Moore

Sunday afternoon, so we have a Pagan warming up in the BP, naturally … 😛

  108. Mauired

Sheets should be his last batter regardless of the outcome

  109. Mark Moore

It’s an out, but he hit that one right on the screws.

  110. Mark Moore

There we go. Seems like they scored more runs than they did, but we still have a 6-run lead and Wilson is done for the day/week.

    • Dennis Westrick

How about done for the season! Package him with Farmer and get a batboy!

  111. RedlegScott

Very fortunate to get out of that with only two.

  112. Dennis Westrick

Crap like this by Bell just infuriates me!

  113. Mark Moore

That stat they just showed … how did BHam manage to get on base 3 times in a game (against the Dirty Birds to boot)?

  114. Mark Moore

Wind held that one up. Nice streak, Elly. Start another one tomorrow night.

    • Dennis Westrick

Who knows, with the way the Reds bullpen is performing today, EDLC may get another AB!

  115. Mike W

    OMG bell, let people play!

Even with us having a 2 Grand Slam lead in the bottom of the 7th you find a need to micromanage and discourage our pitchers (same as last year).
You just can’t leave well enough alone — by leaving our RPs in!

Instead of leaving well rested bullpen leader Sims in to work his way out of a 2 men on “jamb” you bring in Lefty RP Wilson to replace Righty RP Sims — who had only thrown 12 pitches — to face a righty!

You are wasting RPs again (see 2023) and telling them “one mistake and I’m pulling you and I don’t have confidence in you” and the runners Wilson allowed — while throwing 22 pitches in 1 inning — count against Sims.

Actions you take now — like overusing RPs and discouraging, rather than encouraging, you players — could cost us dearly over the year, just like last year. How about expressing confidence in our o players by letting them do the job they were hired to do!

    • Indy Red Man

26 to 5 isn’t good enough? Ok. Ever thought he might want to use Sims Tuesday and doesn’t wanting him throwing 30 pitches in a 8 run game

    • Mauired

Grossman is a switch hitter. He might hit lefties less.

    • Dennis Westrick

You nailed it, Sir! Another example of Bell NOT QUALIFIED to be a ML manager! Sims not given the chance to work out of a mess he created but he leaves Wilson in after 3 walks and 2 runs! Bell’s inconsistency borders on madness!

    • Tom Diesman

Oh great. Some more Bell whiner rants in a blowout win. Almost as good as the Jerry Springer show. LOL

      • Mauired

Oh there you are Tom. I notice you play a disappearing act whenever Benson has success against lefties.

      • Mauired

Just needed to pop in to defend your little buddy Bell

      • Tom Diesman

Good for Benson. Hope he rakes vs LHs all season. I don’t really care for Bell. I just don’t have the need to rant about him.

  116. Dennis Westrick

Nice job by our Pagan on a Sunday!

  117. Mark Moore

Thought Martini stumbled, but I guess he just hesitated and then headed for 2nd based on Benetendi being nonchalant about it.

TySteve helps us take advantage of that and then India gets his rib-eye.

  118. Mauired

I think Stephenson is 0 for but he’s been hitting rockets all day.

  119. Mark Moore

Who was the pitcher jawing at as he left the mound? He looked more than a little frustrated.

  120. Reddawg2012

Tyler Stephenson has the following exit velocities today:

    98.3
    100.6
    103.8
    104.3
    107.0

Only one hit to show for it, but that seems good.

    • Mark Moore

Yeah. Took a very good route and catch on that last one. And with the wind pushing in, some of those are dying.

    • MK

Thatywhy stressing over exit velocities is BS.

  121. Dennis Westrick

Don’t fool yourselves RLN junkies! Would not want to play this Chicago White Sox team when they get healthy and are at full strength!

    • Mauired

Even when healthy, they still don’t have any pitching besides Crochet.

      • Mark Moore

        +1,000

        They are definitely pitching challenged.

    • MK

The guy injured aren’t the guys playing defense like they are playing without gloves. At full strength the Reds are better than them. Reds get to add Friedl and McLain as well.

  122. Mark Moore

I get using Diaz, but he’s rarely good in these situations. That has to impact his confidence.

  123. Mark Moore

There’s your obligatory BB to start things, Dennis.

  124. Melvin

Diaz walking the first batter Dennis with a 7 run lead. 🙂

  125. Dennis Westrick

SHOCKING! Diaz WALKS the first batter he faces! If not, he gets fined?

    • Mark Moore

Nobody ever gets fined by the fellow teammates or the manager/coaches. This Reds team hasn’t seen a Kangaroo Kourt in forever. But there are juice boxes and goldfish crackers …

      • Harry Stoner

I think Dennis was implying that Diaz would be fined if he DIDN’T walk the first batter.

It’s been a Reds’ bullpen tradition for a long time now.

The new pitchers seem to pick up on it quickly, perhaps due to the ‘veteran presence’ and the respect for the tradition.

  126. Mark Moore

Check that route by Benson. The wind must be playing havoc with those fly balls. Good result, though.

  127. RedBB

Man Diaz looks awful…..7 run lead and he can’t throw strikes.

    • Mark Moore

Well, seems he can to every other batter. But he’s not helping himself at all.

    • MK

He had too much time off. He needs to pitch at least three times a week to stay sharp. Think they are limiting him now and putting up with the command issues to have him some gas in the tank for three days a week from mid August on. Remember they wore him out early last season, and he wasn’t sharp at the end.

  128. Jason Franklin

You guys feeling better now that he struck out the last two batters? 🙂

    • Mark Moore

      Little bit … yes.

Comment from Sadak and Welsh was he didn’t “finish” which was causing stuff to tail away to the arm side.

  129. Old-school

Get on the plane!!! On to Seattle. Road sweeps always good.

  130. Mark Moore

OK, that felt good. Lots of contribution across the entire team and the series.

Won’t play again for over 24 hours, so no excuses.

  131. Jason Franklin

Pretty good weekend series by the Redlegs. Outscored a AAAA team 27-5 in 3 games. Just kidding but the White Sox were pretty awful. The Reds did what they needed to do and that’s all that matters.

    • Mauired

I think you might have been a little generous with those a’s. The White Sox look like a minor league squad in everyway.

  132. David

When was the last time Diaz pitched? Because he just might have trouble getting a grip on the ball because he has had days off. Not an excuse, but these guys are not machines.
After all, the Reds just swept a team that might be the worst team in the Majors.
A lot of 4A players, and a couple of guys over the hill, and not much pitching.

Still, a win is a win is a win. I hope this sweep builds a little momentum for this team.

      • Jason Franklin

Seems like Bell has some issues with bullpen management. I wonder if he is in charge of that or the BP coach?

  133. Mauired

He looks very uncomfortable taking pitchers out of the game.

  134. Mike W

Gents, I’m just calling it like I see it: and what I see is Bell’s career record in the minors and with Cinn, is mediocre at best. This is a business and he serves at management’s will. He’s not guaranteed anything, but financial compensation He’s been given 5+ years to produce a playoff team and hasn’t done it. He should be replaced by someone else. His job is not union protected and sure his father was/is? still an advisor to management, but this is a business. You can’t keep a guy on at such a high level after 5 years of mediocre results. And for those who like Bell, I’m truly sorry he didn’t work out, because if he had we’d have been in the playoffs and quality players would be coming to our team instead of leaving it or not coming to join us. This isn’t personal, it’s a business. Frankly he’s lucky he hasn’t already been let go. A few managers were even after having winning seasons!

    • Mauired

I think the majority of people agree. Shocking that he was given an extension the 1st time in 2021 as the team tailspinned out of the playoff picture. I had never seen a manager rewarded after something like that. It was really something. Then another extension came as the team fell out of the playoff picture (look up Pirates sweep) last year despite his lackluster performance in all 5 seasons he’s been the manager.

      • TR

It’s a repeat, but the current Red’s manager is from a long established Cincinnati baseball family going back to his grandfather, Gus Bell, the popular, well regarded centerfielder of the fifties.

    • MK

The guy should have been Manager of the Year 2023. He is currently playin without 3of 8 anticipated starters and just this weekend had all his anticipated starting pitchers active.
He is doing just fine. 5-years ago the Reds were criticized for not being analytical enough. So they hired an analytical staff with an analytical Manager. Be careful what you wish for because this is what it looks like.

      • Mike W

        Hi MK.
I respect your allegiance to Mr. Bell, but we had the 2023 playoffs made easily if DB hadn’t overused our RPs all year.
3 of 4 of which — Gibaut 74, Diaz 71, Farmer 71 and Sims 67 —were in the top 10 of most used!
Contributing to Gibaut, Farmer and Sims having 9 saves total and blowing 17 saves.
Even though we were “the Rally Reds” and had numerous heroic come from behind wins, we also had sooo many blown saves because the guys had little to nothing left in the tank from pitching and or warming up to pitch (20 pitches in the bullpen) practically every other night.
Thankfully DB has changed his style this year — a bit — by letting the staters go ~6 instead of 4.2 and has left a few RPs in to pitch in back to back innings and then given them a few days off.
I wanted him fired, not given an award (MOTY) and the 30 members of the Baseball Writers Assoc. of America showed they weren’t crazy about him either when he received only 1 1st place vote out of 30 votes cast. And they see all the teams and managers.
Anyway, his last 5 years and .469 winning percentage are behind us and Bell is our manager this year, so I’m hoping he’ll continue to manage his RPs and batting order the way I’ve suggested — and let the guys play and not micromanage lefty/righty situations (Sparky never did with Bench, Morgan, Perez, Rose, etc.) and we’ll be in the playoffs this year. Go Reds!
