The Reds and the Brewers played a wild one to open up their series on Monday night as Cincinnati jumped out to an 8-0 lead and barely hung on for a 10-8 win. The two teams get back to it tonight with Milwaukee looking to even things up in the 4-game series. First pitch is set for 6:40pm ET.

Frankie Montas

Before the season began, Montas noted he was going to win 20 games on his own after hearing about some of the projections that had the Reds below .500. So far this season he’s won every game he’s started, so he’s on his way to that goal.

So far this year he’s been dominant and has allowed just one extra-base hit through two starts. He’s faced more left-handed hitters than right-handed hitters this year. They’ve made more contact and have twice as many hits. Small sample size applies big time here.

Joe Ross

It had been a long time prior to his start last week since Joe Ross pitched in the big leagues. On August 10th of 2021 he pitched against the Mets in a game that got suspended by rain. He has battled injuries since then, throwing just 17 innings – all in the minor leagues – between 2022 and 2023.

During the spring he threw 12.0 innings with a 4.50 ERA and had seven walks with 17 strikeouts. In his regular season debut this season he threw 3.2 shutout innings against Minnesota on April 3rd, but walked five batters and gave up two hits as he walked a fine line during the game to avoid allowing any runs.

Updates on Friedl and McLain….

David Bell spoke with the media prior to today’s game and had some updates on some injured players. TJ Friedl is getting another MRI at his scheduled check up just to be sure everything is healing up properly, but he “feels great” according to Mike Petraglia. Bell also stated that it’s realistic that Matt McLain could return at some point in August of this season.

Pirates have already lost. Can pick up a game with a win.

  2. Optimist

The McLain story is definitely a “see it to believe it” August return. Antone story is simply the same for any return. But, they’re professionals, and good at MLB as well, so both could happen. Hope so . . .

  3. Jim t

Would love for our 3 and 4 hitters in our lineup to get hot.

    • RedlegScott

Agree. A combined .300 average won’t cut it.

  4. LarkinPhillips

I can’t believe we haven’t switched CES and Steer yet. – Signed a huge CES fan.

Hopefully Reds can pull out another win against the pesky Brewers tonight. Anyone local to Cincy have a feeling or thought on the rain tonight?

    • Jason T.

Not supposed to rain during game time. Chances after midnight.

    • DW

The high number of strikeouts are a bit concerning, but also expected, for CES. But he has hit the ball hard on quite a few occasions without being rewarded for it. I say let him stay in the middle of the order a little while longer and work through it. Though I would like to see him in the four or five hole, instead of three.

Definitely move Steer up. Should be hitting in the top half of the lineup every game. I’d like to see him in the three hole at this point.

  5. doctorrockett

    I’m optimistic about the Candyman.

However, after looking into the details of his career thus far, he’s relatively steady across the board…with one glaring exception…where he’s hit 8th in a lineup (albeit a small sample size):

    19 games
    56 AB
    63 PA
    22 HITS (13 singles, 6 doubles, 3 HR, 11 ribbies, 6 walks)!!!
    .393 avg!!!

Ummm…can we start a petition with DB?!?

  6. Klugo

Why in the world is CES still batting third, for Gods sake?!

    • Dennis Westrick

Exactly! Move CES down and put Steer in the 3rd or 4th spot, please! Does Bell even look at the stats or trends?

      • Tom Diesman

Yes. But he understands sample sizes

      • Old-school

Steer was the Reds 2023 team MVP. He is the reigning NL player of the week and the Reds unquestioned best hitter. Are you saying 6 other hitters deserve to hit above Steer based on their sample sizes? If you want to die on that hill, go for it.

      • Tom Diesman

        Too early to move Encarnacion-Strand

    • oklared

We can’t decide if we need stability in line up or rearrange due to recent performance.

  7. Jason T.

Would rather have Fairchild in the lineup over Martini regardless of pitcher.
Hoping Montas continues his dominance. He’s been fantastic through his first 2 starts.

  8. LDS

The lineup needs to be shuffled. Just the usual Bell intransigence or innumeracy. Hopefully, tonight’s victory will be less chaotic than last night’s. As for Antone, I think the Reds should be looking at a future non-tender. McLain back by August sounds like wishful thinking. May for Friedl also sounds optimistic, but like more feasible than McLain or Antone.

  9. Redsgettingbetter

Would be possible Antone throwing triple digit after a third surgery come back? What kind of procedure will he suffer in that surgery?

    • VaRedsFan

He’s coming back as Col. Steve Austin
      I’m all for it!

    • William

I am a CES fan, but he should bat seventh and Steer third right not.

  10. Nick in NKY

I don’t see the point in shuffling the lineup for at least a month. Come May, if certain guys are still struggling, then maybe time to take a look. In the meantime, if it ain’t broke (mostly), no need to fix it.

  11. Dennis Westrick

Can we please have a “Normal” game tonight, whatever that is? If not, I will be forced to send a bill to the Reds FO for oxygen supplies and more blood pressure meds!

  12. Dennis Westrick

Last night turned out to be a great night for the Reds! In addition to hanging on for a nail-biting win, EVERY other team in the NL Central Division lost!

Let’s get win No. 2 tonight against the Bernies!

    • Melvin

“Let’s get win No. 2 tonight against the Bernies!”

Okay. Now that you’ve said that I’m all for it. 😉

  13. Melvin

“Tejay Antone is having his third elbow surgery on Friday. He said he wants to make it back to the big leagues to be an inspiration.”

He’ll be an inspiration to me if he just comes back healthy and has a fully functional arm.

  14. Dennis Westrick

Took a look at the MLB hitting statistics season-to-date today! The Reds have the WORST strikeouts per game ratio at 10.5! If I was the hitting coach I would be aghast!

That statistic will have to improve if the Reds are serious about making the playoffs this year!

  15. VaRedsFan

    Leadoff single. India.
    Oppo style.
    Love it.

  16. Reddawg2012

Does anyone else have super terrible Bally Sports signal so far tonight?

  17. Dennis Westrick

Reds need to patient and selective at the plate tonight given Joe Ross’ tendency to give up a lot of walks!

  18. Ronnie

What is the expected return date if friedl? I thought late May.

  19. Mauired

India doing his job getting to 3rd. Can Candelario do his and get the run in?

  20. Mark A Verticchio

3 and 4 hitters are really hurting this team.

  21. GPod

between Candelario & Strand….what a dead spot in the lineup

  22. RedlegScott

Agree with what’s been stated regarding the 3 and 4 spots in the line-up and having Fairchild in there, too.

  23. Mauired

Montas lookin good as usual. Keep it up.

  24. Melvin

Best #7 hitter in baseball on base again. Even Larkin mentioning his numbers and how he’s batting 7th. 🙂

  25. Mark Moore

Had the Bally audio feed on for a bit. Day was saying how Suter went to the training room to give TJ a hug and then went back out and pitched the next inning. That’s a teammate to an extreme degree.

  26. Mauired

Ross hasn’t been a viable big league pitcher in 3 years but Reds lineup making him look pretty good. One hit and one walk 1st time through the order.

  27. Mark Moore

Guys seem to be low on the mojo scale so far tonight. Post-eclipse effect?

  28. Dennis Westrick

Yes! I’m gonna say it! Walks are like Kryptonite!

    • Indy Red Man

Had Yelich 0-2 and the scrub with the 2 run single was down 1-2. Disappointing

  29. JB

I wonder if Yelich would bat 7th if he was a Red?

    • GPod

I would not bring him back in the 4th

      • Tom Diesman

I hear you. Should have pulled him after that 65 mph two run single in the third.

      • DW

Really? Just burn your bullpen because he gave up three runs? This is a four game series, the second game of a ten game stretch, and early in a very long season. Historically, Bell burns through the bullpen enough as it is.

  30. Mauired

Just 3 runs. Hopefully he can rebound. 64 pitches after 3 innings though. Spiers might need to pitch some long relief tonite.

Reds need to show some offense.

    • GPod

That may be our only hope…team looks dead

  31. Mauired

Benson hit that hard but off the end of the bat. 3 innings and1 single off Joe Ross? Not looking good.

    • Mark Moore

End of the bat and “heavy air with rain” pretty much doomed it.

  32. Roger Garrett

Reds hitters are just not ready to hit.Martini last inning takes strike 3 and the first two guys this inning ahead in the count strike out on sliders off the plate.Ross is just not that good and hasn’t been in a long time.

  33. Indy Red Man

How come Connor Phillips has only made 1 start? He’s probably one of our best options right now

    • Mauired

I think he’s pitching for Bats today.

  34. Old-school

3rd time through the lineup. We got this.

  35. Dennis Westrick

Frankie goes to Hollywood! Hasn’t got it tonight!

  36. dimondfvr

Time to get Montas out of there.

  37. Mauired

If Bell brings him out for the 5th with 84 pitchs fine. But at least start getting the bullpen ready or it might get ugly fast. He’s hanging in there but barely. Offense has a single single so far. If he gives up another 3 spot it’s game over.

  38. Mauired

Let’s go Fraley. We need a run here.

  39. Mark Moore

OK, that’s one back. Nice effort by Jake to lace one up the middle. Candy tried but some good leather beat him.

  40. Mark Moore

And Elly finds a groove on that one right at his knees.

  41. Melvin

De La Cruz hitting over .300 now. 🙂

  42. Mauired

Alright, nice job hitting the breaking ball Elly. Tying run in scoring position. One out.

  43. VaRedsFan

Joe Ross last 3 starts vs Reds.

    4 IP 3H 0 Runs
    6.2 IP 5H 1 Run
    7 IP 6H 1 Run

Yes…this goes all the way back to 2017. lol

  44. Mark Moore

Ross pulled a string on that 3rd strike by Steer. Martini looked lost from the get go.

    • GPod

both at bats today, he takes strike 3 on balls he should hammer as a left-hand batter

  45. DW

Hard to get down on Steer right now, especially since he battled in that at bat, but gotta get the ball out in play there.

  46. Dennis Westrick

Huge missed opportunity to tie the game! Gotta put the ball in play! Way too many strikeouts – Again!

  47. Mauired

Ouch that might have been the biggest spot. Had Ross on the ropes with one in and two in scoring position only one out. Then two strikouts.

Hopefully, he doesn’t have enough in the tank to get through the lineup a 3rd time.

  48. Reddawg2012

It seems Nick Martini is this April’s Jason Vosler.

  49. Mauired

Ok leadoff batter on. Montas has struggled. How long is Bell going to wait to get someone warmed up.

  50. JB

India whiffed on that throw and it cost us.

    • Ted Alfred

It’s hard to believe Hindi is defense is so consistently terrible at second base but it just is. He whiffed on a throw that was basically perfect from 10 ft away that just gave the Brewers 2 runs… should have been a DP

    • Andy

I’m at game and it looked like India’s fault from my seat, but I see ESPN gave error to Elly. Was the throw that bad?

    • Beaufort Red

Throw was into the runner. Pretty obvious. Hence E-6.

    • Dennis Westrick

Living in Florida, I remember when Yelich played for the Fish in Miami! When he wanted out, I was hopeful the Reds would pick him up!

      • VaRedsFan

I Think the price at the time was Nick Senzel.
        Reds said no.

      • Daytonnati

Wasn’t there talk of Yelich for Chapman at one time?

      • Melvin

“I Think the price at the time was Nick Senzel.
        Reds said no.”

        Yeah. I remember that. lol

  51. Indy Red Man

Elly and India up the middle doesn’t inspire confidence.

  52. LarkinPhillips

I’m afraid to see how far behind the Reds will be of most teams in defensive war by end of the year. The extra outs are going to wear on the pitchers as this year progresses as well.

    • VaRedsFan

It seems to happen every game.
There are a ton of plays not called “errors” that should be made too.
      Very costly indeed.

  53. Tyler Hawk

The team has looked flat from the get go in this one … Both EDC and Benson poked the bear in postgame concerning the Brew Crew just not a good look overall and just a symptom of the manager ho hum nature

  54. GPod

remember when Stevenson used to be a good hitter?

    • Tyler Hawk

Yeah … he was two concussions and a broken clavicle ago

      • VaRedsFan

        He’s had 3 concussions.
        1 in high school.
        1 in Single A
        1 in MLB

  55. JB

What is it with the Reds and journeymen pitchers? They struggle mightily against them

  56. Dennis Westrick

The Brewers came back from a 9-3 deficit last night! We can overcome a 4-run deficit!

  57. Erik the Red

Making Ross looking like a serviceable starter.

  58. Mark Moore

Was that a shot of Lodolo in the house?

    • VaRedsFan

Montas was holding court with all the youngsters.
      Hopefully sharing some knowledge.

  59. Roger Garrett

Hope so but got to think Spiers is out there for awhile regardless of how he does.I see the white flag being waved.Got to believe Spiers is not in the plan after tonight.Could be wrong and hope I am.

  60. GPod

this game is about down the toilet ……#9 hitter with 3 hits….good god

  61. VaRedsFan

Man….the extra base on the “wild pitch” comes home to roost.

  62. Mark Moore

Kind of feels like that’s the final nail in tonight’s coffin. I only have it on the phone screen, but it just feels like more than 5 runs down now.

Figure we have to lose one of a 4-game series. Might as well be tonight.

  63. Dennis Westrick

Why is it that Reds opponents get 2-out hits with 2 strikes but Reds batters strike out?

  64. Mark A Verticchio

Wild pitch gives away another run, I thought a good catcher makes that play. The Reds defense is flat out awful and has possibly cost 3 runs tonight.

  65. GPod

As far as Stevenson….he was a good hitter, but considered a liability behind the plate….so now that he can’t hit ….what do we have?

  66. Mark A Verticchio

I will settle for a split in this series, Brewers look like the better team right now. Getting Freidl back might change that.

  67. RedlegScott

Is it time to get Candelario out of the clean-up spot?

    • Mauired

it was never a good idea in the 1st place. He’s a good 6/7 hole hitter. nothing more

      • Rod Andrews

…an overpriced 6-7 hitter! This guy is a .240 hitter at best, but being a switch hitter helped get him a big contract. If both McLain and Marte get back for a couple of months the Reds will be much better. Candelario, I just don’t know.

    • JohnnySofa

You knew Bell would stuff him into the middle of the lineup, no matter what. And what the he …ck is Steer doing in the 7 hole again? Just limit the number of ABs for your best hitter. Sure, makes sense.

  68. Mark Moore

OK, that’s a Clete for me. If we come back, great. If not, I’ve seen enough tonight.

  69. Roger Garrett

    Ross with a 6 pitch inning gets are 3 4 and 5 hitters.Night all.

  70. Mauired

Oh no. Don’t add an injury to this debacle

  71. Mauired

Spiers looks like a BP pitcher. I don’t know if he’s even worth a 40 man spot.

    • VaRedsFan

Kind of need him to just finish the game out now….eat some innings.
Doesn’t look like he’s going to even do that now.

Luke Maile to pitch the 9th maybe?

  72. RedsMonk65

Just now able to tune in. Think I’ll tune back out. (sigh)

  73. Dennis Westrick

Not our night! It’s a Clete for me!

  74. Erik the Red

It is still early in the year. But there are some warning signs that we might be another year or two away. Bullpen depth is already being tested by the 10th game, defense is not very good, and the offense has struggled more than expected against less than top tier starting pitching.

  75. Mauired

Game might be over but series isn’t. Let’s get Ross out of the game and into the Brewers pen

  76. Redbb

Gardbage effort by the Reds tonight…

  77. Mark A Verticchio

Martini is really letting me down, I thought he could really help. However despite this team playing way below expectations 6 and 5 isn’t awful.

  78. Indy Red Man

U-g-l-y we ain’t got no alibi

    HG is HG
    Ashcraft needs something below 90?
Lodolo throwing 93.6 and getting lit up at AAA
Martinez looks like he should be in the pen

Candy looks like the guy early on in Detroit that made me say “The Tigers don’t even care, leaving this .215 hitting sad sack in the middle of their lineup”. Sims and Pagan aren’t elite high leverage and it’s highly probable Diaz isn’t either.
Still like our team when healthy if they add a couple of arms, but this year is going to be a struggle

  79. Mauired

Finally got those two runs home needed back in the 4th when it was a 3-1 game.

    • Dennis Westrick

      Yep! Too little, too late!

  80. Mauired

India might be the worst 2nd baseman I’ve seen.

    • Tyler Hawk

      That’s because he’s a 3rd baseman lol

  81. LDS

5 errors in 11 games? So much for EDLC as an all star SS. This game isn’t what I’d expected. Bell needs to learn to manage or yield to someone that can. Sticking with his same lineup, regardless of performance is malpractice. Candelario isn’t a #4 hitter. In fact, he didn’t hit in ST and hasn’t hit thus far. Just because the Reds overpaid is no reason to treat him like Hank Aaron.

    • Mauired

I’m not sure about Elly at short but that one wasn’t really his fault. India just whiffed it.

    • Mauired

Candelario never should have been the cleanup hitter, but our stubborn manager will wait until 2025 to figure it out.

    • Melvin

I’d like to see Steer and Candelario swapped in the order. Maybe the new advanced analytics say put your best hitter in the 7th spot and I’m just behind in my thinking. 😀

  82. Dennis Westrick

I guess Spiers was the sacrificial lamb tonight!

  83. Mauired

Candelario looks really good in the field but his bat looks real slow. Moose 2.0

  84. RedlegScott

Candelario has been so bad tonight in the clean-up role that even Bell might finally be convinced to get him out of that spot. One can only hope.

  85. Mauired

If it wern’t for India’s bad team and Spiers bad pitching Reds would be in the game.

  86. VaRedsFan

    Back in slam range.
Good to see CES get 2 knocks tonight.
Thought Elly’s hit was destined for CF, but the SS was right behind the bag @ 2nd

  87. RedlegScott

The only bright spot tonight is 5 runs on 9 hits (so far). At least that’s something.

    • Mauired

Another one was Montas bad start was not so bad. 3 earned 5 innings.

  88. VaRedsFan

Another soft tossing lefty tomorrow in Wade Miley.

    • Mauired

He’s coming off a 55 pitch rehab start. That’s why Reds need to burn throuh some more brewers bullpen in the 9th.

      • Mauired

At least Reds got the Brewers closer in the game after being down 9-1

  89. VaRedsFan

Spiers’ line wasn’t good, but he did burn 4 innings while they are in the midst of a long time with no off days.

    • Mauired

Sure but if he didn’t give up 4 runs, its a tie game with two in scoring position no outs.

    • Mauired

He allowed 10 baserunners and 4 to score in 4 innings. Not really inspirational pitching.

  90. LarkinPhillips

I hate the launch angle stuff, but I wish Stephenson would get some sort of elevation. He seems to be a ground ball machine.

  91. Mauired

Not much better in Louisville. Connor Phillips got shelled. 7 hits and 4 walks. 8 earned runs. Didn’t get out of the 4th.

I’m not so sure he’s a starting pitcher.

  92. Tom Diesman

No quit in this team. I love that.

  93. Mauired

CES just wait too aggresive. Hitting .100 with 0 Walks

  94. Dennis Westrick

Runners on 2nd & 3rd with NO Outs and can’t score! Shades of last year!

    • RedlegScott

Three straight wiffs to make matters worse.

  95. DK in Erie Pa

We could have the worst 3-4 hitters in MLB

    • RedlegScott

#3 showed signs of life. Stick a fork in #4.

  96. Dennis Westrick

Twelve (12) strikeouts tonight! Above their average of 10.5 per game! Fire the hitting coach!

  97. Mauired

After seeing Spiers tonight, I’m wondering if there wasn’t a better arm to call up from Louisville like Legumina
