Cincinnati suffered a deflating loss on Saturday evening after the Reds offense mounted a 2-run 8th inning to take the lead. Alexis Diaz couldn’t get the job done in a sloppily played game by the home team as the Washington Nationals came from behind to even the series up at one game each. This afternoon’s contest will decide the series victor. First pitch is scheduled for 1:40pm ET.

Nick Martinez

This will be the Reds debut for Martinez after spending the last few seasons pitching out west with the San Diego Padres. The ballparks are quite different in the NL Central than they are in the NL West (except for Colorado). With that said, looking at his splits he’s been much better against right-handed hitters than left-handed hitters since the start of 2023. Righties hit for a low average and next to no power against him. Lefties have hit for a solid average, and while they haven’t shown much power against him, it has been more than righties have hit for.

Jake Irvin

A rookie last season, Irvin made 24 starts for the Nationals and posted a 4.61 ERA during the season. He faced Cincinnati twice in 2023, allowing six earned runs and three home runs in 10.1 innings.

Last season left-handed hitters had a lot better production than right-handed hitters did against him. They held a 179 point OPS advantage, hitting for a significantly higher average and power, while walking slightly more often and making more contact. Only seven of his 24 starts came on the road last season, but he struggled away from Washington in those starts compared to when he pitched at home.

Cincinnati has sent Nick Lodolo to Louisville to begin a rehab assignment today. He’ll take the mound at 1:05pm ET for the Bats. If all goes to plan, he should get one more rehab start before returning to the Reds on April 10th.

V.Gutierrez called up by the Marlins

  2. Laredo Slider

Bell with two of his better offensive players hitting 6th/7th. SMH.

    • greenmtred

And three of his better offensive players batting 1 thru 3.

  3. David

If Nick Martinez can give the Reds 5 -6 good innings, they Reds have a pretty good chance at a victory today.

It will be interesting to see how David Bell uses the bullpen today.
Go Reds, and more importantly, have a Happy Easter.

  4. Matt McWax

Good to see Fraley and family at the Easter Egg hunt all smiles. I really hope their daughter beats Leukemia, something no child deserves.

Also, time to take this series with some more mashing.

  5. Jim Walker

Yep. Winker looking old Winker vs RHP. Guess the question is how long he can stay healthy.

    • Mauired

I thought Winker was worth a minor league deal. He’s been hurt for a couple years. But he looked like 2021 Winker yesterday. Could be a real big pickup and trade bait for Nats. Like Candelario last season.

  6. MBS

That Irvin was dealing in the 1st. We better make him work a bit next inning.

  7. Mauired

Looks like the lineup will be Fraley/Fairchild platoon and Martini/Espinal platoon until Friedl comes back.

    • Jim Walker

      …..until Friedl gets back
      Then things get really interesting.

  8. MBS

Martinez looked tighter in the 2nd. If spring and these 2 innings are representative of what Martinez is as a pitcher, I’m a big fan.

    • Jim Walker

And where is the game at now where you are 😉

I’m new to Fubo TV and wondering how far they might be railing the actual “live” events (and too lazy to turn on a radio I guess).

      • MBS

I’m behind as well. I stream on the Bally’s app, and get notifications about 15 seconds before plays happen. I try to keep my phone face down to keep from getting those alerts.

      • Jim Walker

I’ve got 2 windows side by side on a PC and saw the X post of Abram’s HR at least a minute in advance.

  9. Ronnie

Would be great to get another good start out of our free agents.

  10. Jim Walker

That Abrams PA seems to have taken a toll on Martinez. Let’s see if he can rejuvenate in the dugout after escaping with no further damage.

    • Old-school

That would be an affirmative Jim. 1-2-3 (8) pitch inning.

  11. Old-school

Big at bat for TS. 2on, no out. Dont hit the 6-4-3 dbp.

    • Jim Walker

At least TS avoided the GIDP. Appeared he was guessing he would see a get ahead strike on pitch 1 but was looking in a different location than they threw it. Better to take it than roll over it or pop it up. Battled back well and at least advanced the runners for India’s RBI ground out.

  12. Old-school

    Productive inning moving runners.

Im fine with Benson in CF and hitting 2nd with Friedl out against lefties

  13. RedsMonk65

Benson looking good at the plate thus far this season.

      • RedsMonk65

Too bad he was caught stealing. Elly’s triple would have brought in another run.

Except for CES, everyone seems to be hitting well thus far.

        Oh, and Steer rocks.

  14. CI3J

CES might need a Benson-style return trip to the minors if he keep struggling like this for a few weeks.

He seems to be pressing too much. He needs to just clear his head and get his swing right with no pressure on him. Whether that happens in Cincinnati or Louisville remains to be seen.

    • RedlegScott

Drop him in the order first? Candelario not exactly killing it either. Tough spot for the Reds since they’re batting 3rd and 4th.

      • CI3J

if he keep struggling like this for a few weeks.

  15. CI3J

Yet another TOOTBLAN, this time with Fraley the perpetrator.

  16. RedsMonk65

Martinez faltering. Looks like another bullpen adventure soon.

  17. RedsMonk65

Stop the presses — Stephenson nails a runner! Nice throw. (And yes, I know the runner was called safe. Second day in a row the umps have made a horrible call.)

  18. LDS

So, sacrifice hits can work? Who knew? At least, Martinez hasn’t walked anyone yet. Washington is considered one of the weakest teams in the league. The Reds need to win this one.

  19. Indy Red Man

Martinez hurt on a couple of fastballs out over the plate. He’s an off speed guy…no challenging them over the plate. Limited the damage though.

  20. redsfansince62

    Hello Redlegnation:

I am new to this reply board. I look forward to discussing games with you this year and in the future.

  21. GreatRedLegsFan

Who leaves the roster upon Lodolo’s return?

    • Matt McWax

Really could only be Antone, Cruz or Ashcraft, unless there is a nagging injury amongst the other staff. Diaz has options but that may be a little too bold.

      • greenmtred

Ashcraft?? With all due respect, that’s crazy.

  22. Old-school

Fraley 3-3 and fights one off against a lefty

  23. Old-school

Steer and CES need to swap spots tomorrow in the lineup. Take some pressure off CES

  24. CI3J

Benson so close with a highlight reel, homerun robbing catch.

But “close” only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades.

  25. VaRedsFan

    Move the fences back Bob.
Has this ever been brought up, except on these pages?

    Worked wonders for Orioles pitchers.

  26. Indy Red Man

Farmer has no fastball at all today. Why’d they bring him back anyway? This pen is going to kill us

    • Jim Walker

The incumbents are in vintage form, but the new guys have a lot to learn 😉

  27. JB

I would get rid of Farmer , way before Cruz.

    • Matt McWax

It wouldn’t break my heart, as I think Cruz could be really strong and losing Farmer would be sad but not devastating.

  28. RedsMonk65

Geez, this bullpen. Not feeling good about this game….

  29. Mauired

I have no idea why Reds even brought back Farmer much gave him a raise. Typical outing. Homer and lots of base runners. Leaves the inning with the bases loaded. The guy sucks.

  30. Mauired

Oh wow. They left him in with bases loaded. What a wise decision

  31. Mauired

Got out of the jam. Only took 31 pitches. Most difficult pitcher to watch on the staff.

  32. Indy Red Man

Big Tony or the Louisville closer…whatever his name is. They’re all better then Farmer. Moll and Gibaut too. Saw no reason for Farmer

  33. RedsGettingBetter

I writing this after Farmer dominated Ruiz but he should be hooked before. No way Bell leaving him there after he was throwing a 90.4 MPH fastball with no much command

  34. Doc4uk

30 pitch inning for Farmer. Not sure why they brought him back with an ERA over 4.0 . Very concerned about Farmer and Diaz. Perhaps he will be sent down when Lodolo is activated and Martinez is sent to the pen.

  35. Roger Garrett

Reds pen may get there but in baseball now the guys in the pen better throw 95 or greater or have a great change or splitter.Diaz at 93 yesterday is just not the same as the 96 he was last year and Buck at 90 is just batting practice for most big league hitters. If you can’t miss bats well it will come back to beat you late in games.

  36. RedsMonk65

C’mon Reds, pour it on while you have the chance. Make the pen irrelevant!

  37. VaRedsFan

    Well…that was unfortunate CES.
    Not getting anything elevated.

Coaches have to be in his ear that everything Floro was throwing was at the knees or lower. I’d love to sit in the dugout and just hear what communications are happening.

  38. RedsGettingBetter

Wow I don’t know if CES has hit something different like a groundout to third , ground to third for double play or punched out so far

  39. Tom Mitsoff

This is very close to getting out of hand. Antone can’t throw a strike.

  40. Justin T

And this is what im talking about… Bell pinch runs for the Stephenson, Bubba comes on and steals second. You simply put India on first and get your double play that way. Stop thinking one move at a time. Now your starting catcher is out of the game. Just let the game come to you, its too easy to counter those moves for an opposing manager.

    • CI3J

I imagine Bell is a horrible chess player.

  41. VaRedsFan

Welp….it seems to be contagious with the entire bullpen

  42. RedsMonk65

Wow, even Antone. Not looking good….

  43. Mike W

Three games in and Bell is already over managing our pitchers!
He should have let Green go at least 5 innings.
Pulls him after 4.2? Really! Just so he couldn’t get the W?
We’re ahead 4-2 after 6 and you still find the need to use 5 RPs in our second game? Don’t you remember how you burned them out last year (2nd most appearances of any team)?
And today he pulls Martinez after 90 pitches, tied 3-3, so no chance of our SP earning a W again. Let our pitchers pitch. Stop micro (lefty righty righty lefty) managing.
You’ve now given EVERYONE on the team (except 2 SPs of course) time on the field. This is not Little League. You don’t have to do that. There are no participation trophies. We had 2 run leads twice yesterday and lost. We had a 2 run lead today and trail in the 8th. We had 2 on and no outs in th bottom of the7th today and you didn’t have us bunt? Why not? Bunt has men on 2nd and 3B, anda fly ball ties the game, or a single wins the game. But no, you let them swing away. Really poor management! Washington gets 2 on and no outs (just as we had) in the 8th and their batter shows bunt, and draws a walk. Pagan through 9 pitches to get 3 outs and Bell pulls him to use more RPs. Why? If it ain’t broke, don’t do anything Bell! (We trail 4-3 right now and I hope we come back, but I’m guessing Bell uses 6 more pitchers today and we lose again. I hope not….)

    • greenmtred

Washington was starting to hit him. If Bell had left him in and he’d given up a few more hits, you’d be all over him for that. Harry’s right (I know you mean it sarcastically, Harry): Bell and all other managers do know things about their players that we do not. Doesn’t mean that they always get it right, but they’re working with more information. Obviously.

  44. Doc4uk

Antone not same pitcher as prior to injury. Unfortunately he will be dropped before they drop Farmer Reds bullpen is once again a major issue.

    • Hanawi

Front office not adding a legitimate starting OF in the offseason is going to come back to haunt them.

  45. VaRedsFan

That ball needs to be cut to, get the other runners moving up. No chance at home.

  46. VaRedsFan

All in all….decent job by Cruz

    • JB

Cruz has one of the nastiest pitches in the game. Farmer does not.

    • Tom Mitsoff

Yes, he is moving up my bullpen depth chart very quickly.

  47. RedsGettingBetter

Antone isn’t the same anymore… 92-94 MPH fastball and lack of control … Cruz could minimize the damage to only one run…but this doesn’t look good for the next games upcoming

  48. Reddawg2012

We will always have opening day. No one can ever take that away from us.

  49. JB

It’s early but these games mean just as much now as they do at the end of the season. You have to win every series against these crappy teams. The Reds missed out by two games last year. They are giving away two games already.

    • Hanawi

Luckily they are in the weakest division, but it also means they probably have to win it.

    • Tom Mitsoff

I am looking at this team as a contender for a division title. Three games in is no time to panic, but players who are on the fringes and not performing will have to be on very short leashes. There’s not a month or so to give Diaz, Farmer, Antone, etc., a chance to get themselves in order.

  50. Roger Garrett

Wasted another chance to score. The difference is there guy was 98/99 with a splitter to go along with it.Big difference cause we have nobody like that.Tony S needs to be up here now and can we maybe discuss Hunter in the pen?Probably not but is it something to consider even after only two games but we can see what we have and all pretty much are the same pitcher.

  51. Matt McWax

Hope there are no football scouts sneaking about watching Elly.

  52. Hanawi

One thing we have learned so far is that Steer is backing up his year last year and showing he is one of the best hitters on the team. Time to move him up to the 3rd spot.

  53. Indy Red Man

That’s why yesterday hurts. Everybody loses games, but you can’t be up 2 in the 9th and lose.

    • VaRedsFan

      Yes, yesterday was a giveaway.
      Today they just got beat.

  54. Mike W

I agree with all of you: weak throwing arms and not hitting cutoff guys have allowed several runners to score and others to advance. Still we’ve lost 3 leads in the last 15 innings. We’ve scored 17 runs in 3 games and will likely lose 2 of 3 at home. Let starters pitch. Use fewer RPs and bunt more often. I was so excited after the first 15 innings of this season started. Buy hey, if we lose 70 games we’re in the playoffs. Go Reds!

  55. LDS

Another year, just like the other years. At some point, Krall has to realize that this team is not going to win with Bell at the helm, DJ, and a bunch of retreads. Man up Nick and make the changes.

  56. Hanawi

And then BOOM from Benson. Not dead yet!

  57. LDS

Benson comes through. CES end it now. No extra innings.

  58. RedsMonk65

CES shows up just the right time!

Reds did not deserve to win, maybe, but they do!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  59. JB

Well CES needed that. We needed this series. Like I said you have to win every series against crappy teams.

    • Mauired

Very true. Big win. They all count the same. Reds finished two games out of playoffs last year. This win could be very important in six months.

  60. Harry Stoner

That’s a fun way to win a game.

India’s at bat was one for the ages.

  61. RedlegScott

CES’s first hit is a walk-off dinger. Sweet!

  62. JB

Now let’s figure out that Bullpen Mr. Bell

  63. Mauired

Lol. Don’t demote CES yet. But seriously was impressed by the India an to just keep the Reds alive. Not sure if I’ve seen back to back homers to walk off the game. Five minutes of fun to wash away two terrible days of baseball.

    • Indy Red Man

Dan Driessen inside the park and then Bench hit the walkoff. I was there. 1978 I think

  64. Roger Garrett

No words to describe what just happened.India battled and got it started.Got to believe he is the leader of this team.He could have rolled over down 2 with 2 out but he fought and fought.

  65. Oldtimer

Love reading the negative comments then …

  66. VaRedsFan

    The minor leaguer comes though!!

  67. Indy Red Man

Wow. Gave up and watched Purdue bb

  68. RedsMonk65

WOW. Amazing. Still concerned about the bullpen, the outfield defense, and some of Bell’s head-scratchers, but all in all, well done! More, please.

  69. Tom Mitsoff

Three of the balls hit off Finnegan in the ninth — Martini, Benson and Encarnacion-Strand — were 100 mph plus.

  70. RedsGettingBetter

This walk-off-homer win changes everything for tomorrow… CES should get rid of the beginning press starting here… Benson has started hitting pretty good and Fernando Cruz minimizing damage was huge…

  71. Tom Mitsoff

That one is about as sweet as it gets. Tremendous sign for this team.

  72. Mauired

Didn’t Reds lead baseball in comeback wins last year? Seems like deja vu

    • greenmtred

They were second by a game or two. Lead for much of the year, I think.

  73. VaRedsFan

This is why you should NEVER Clete!

  74. TJ

Way to go Reds. All credit to David Bell. Early manager of the year candidate.

  75. Mauired

Pirates just finished a four game sweep. But I believe they were the surprise team in the first half last year before coming back to earth.

  76. TR

What a game. A ninth inning surprise like yesterday with Reds up by 2, lose 7-6. Today, Nats up 2, Reds win 6-5. Off to Philly for a tough series.

  77. VaRedsFan

113.3 MPH off the bat of CES 387 feet
102.9 for Benson and 411 feet

  78. LeRoy

2 outs and India up. I know I’ve never seen back to back to back home runs to win a game. India keeps fouling off 2 strike pitches and I hope he walks. Then he lines a double down the line, and Benson hits the dinger to tie the game and CES ends it with a walk off homer. This is also a good way to end the game. The boys from last year are back!

  79. GMan88

I wonder what the “win probability” was for Washington when India stepped up with two outs, down 2, and nobody on.

  80. Mike W

LDS is right on, Krall replace Bell.
I’m happy for India’s early success.
Benson hitting second is what Ive always said, yeah!
(Hitting that man and his OPS 8th or 9th was insulting).
SOMETHING has to be done about our bullpen!
I think their ERA is around 7 now.
Each of our starters should have been kept in for another inning.
They are off to a much better start than our bullpen.
    Go Reds!
