News and Notes

Santiago Espinal’s phone blows up

When the Reds acquired their new infielder, the first person to send Santiago Espinal a text was Joey Votto. Espinal and Votto were teammates with Toronto for about two weeks before Espinal was traded to Cincinnati.

The return of Tejay Antone

Charlie Goldsmith of the Cincinnati Enquirer wrote about reliever Tejay Antone this weekend. After coming back from his second Tommy John surgery, Antone has made the opening day roster after throwing 8.2 innings with a 3.12 ERA this spring that included 10 strikeouts. Not bad for a guy who wasn’t sure he was ever going to pitch again.

Man I love Votto. With the 2024 season unraveling before it even starts,do we try to get Joey back here in Cincinnati.? It will at least give me a reason to follow!

    • Melvin

Has he played since that one and only AB (HR) and then rolling his ankle?

  2. AllTheHype

Have the Reds officially released the rotation order after Montas? Guess if Greene is pitching tomorrow he probably lines up for Saturday, then Ashcraft, Martinez, Abbott?

    • Mark Moore

That probably sounds like the right order, at least to me.

At least we 1) get to see this game for a change and 2) are on the brink of REAL MEANINGFUL BASEBALL GAMES!!!

    • DaveCT

Not following. Ashcraft started yesterday and Martinez the game before. Wouldn’t they stay in that sequence, Hype?

      • AllTheHype

Not sure about that. I was thinking they are lining up Montas for 4 days rest, Greene for 5, and every one else more than that. Or it could be Montas 5, Ashcraft 7, Greene 6 etc. I may be reading too much into it.

    • Tom Diesman

According to C. Trent Rosecrans at the Athletic:

That order — Montas, Greene, Martinez, Abbott, Ashcraft — is how the team will line up its pitchers in the first five games of the season.

  3. AllTheHype

Reds have an opportunity to play the service time with Lodolo. In the past they have, to their credit, not played such games. Will be interesting if they DL him and let him accrue time or option him to get the extra year of control (he needs a little over 2 weeks down for that).

    • DaveCT

I’d think that as a matter of good faith, and looking at just really a matter of, what, ten days, it’d be the DL.

    • BK

If he’s injured or recovering from injury as has been widely reported, there really is no decision–he starts on the IL.

      • AllTheHype

He’s been pitching, just not stretched out. They have cover. They can simply say he didn’t make the team. But I don’t think they will do that. At least I hope not.

      • BK

He started pitching late due to an injury. From the Red’s official website:

“LHP Nick Lodolo (left tibia discomfort)
        Expected return: April 10
After the Reds break camp, Lodolo will remain in Arizona and pitch in a Minor League game on March 26. His plans include pitching in two games on a rehab assignment with Triple-A Louisville before making his regular-season debut in the big leagues on April 10 vs. the Brewers. (Last updated: March 21)”

Rehab assignments occur on the IL.

    Bad read from Fraley …

And was that actually Charlie Blackmon … or just a Blackmon bobblehead covered in hair? 😀

  5. Mark Moore

Day and Sam will be an interesting combo to listen to today.

Nice way to bear down by Montas on the Backwards-K

    • Jason Franklin

I really have always enjoyed Jim Day’s chances when he announces. May just be me.

      • TR

I also enjoy listening to Jim Day. In comparison to other teams interviewers, he’s got what it takes. Day comes across as genuinely interested in people.

  6. Mark Moore

Fraley owes Frankie a beer for that one.

  7. AllTheHype

Hope the Reds are considering Benson for leadoff. I mean, why not, he’s got speed, he works the count, takes his BBs.

  8. AllTheHype

It’s the 2020s and MLB doesn’t have Statcast for Spring games. Come on, MLB, wake up and put just a *little* bit of money into the presentation of your product.

    • Mark Moore

Lack of stats, lack of televised games, lack of … it’s ridiculous IMO.

  9. AllTheHype

New guy going with the pitch. Nice!

    • Mark Moore

Day saying that’s his MO as a hitter. I like the approach.

    • AllTheHype

I live 40 mins from Camden. Not an Orioles fan tho. All my friends are. They used to sell out often in the late 90s, but the downtown is less fun, more bad elements. Can’t park and walk to the stadium without someone asking for money or handouts. I don’t go to games there anymore. Stopped about a few years ago.

      • Mark Moore

Sad state of affairs. I did some work in downtown Baltimore and have attended a conference there. I used to love eating on the patio at City Lights by the Inner Harbor. The game I saw was part of the conference and we had our bash in the picnic grove (ended up hanging out in that area near the bullpen).

      • Frankie Tomatoes

Every Reds game that I have been to over the last 35 years I walked past multiple people with a sign asking for money or a cup and a sign asking for money. These people are just asking for help. You will be fine walking past them and pretending they don’t exist.

      • Melvin

“Can’t park and walk to the stadium without someone asking for money or handouts.”

I’ve had the same experience in Cincy. Different sad story from the same people each weak. I tell people that and they still give them money. lol

    • Harry Stoner

This pivots from a discussion about the Orioles owner and his relationship with a team and a ballpark in a beat down city to RLN members bragging about how they blow off sad sacks on the street.

With the predictable (and lame) justifications to follow.

  10. DaveCT

Watching Montas and, first, delivery-wise, he and Green remind me of each other, and second, I’m thinking he can be a tremendous mentor for Hunter as well.

    • AllTheHype

Yep and he has that off speed changeup that moves away from LHBs. Greene needs that pitch, specifically.

  11. AllTheHype

Rocks are having some issues trying to square up Montas. Liking the swinging strikes and movement. First time I’ve seen him.

    • Mark Moore

I noticed the movement as well. Sam is commenting on it regularly. Plus his velocity is back up there.

  12. Mark Moore

    Frankie through Four Fares Fine

  13. Mark Moore

I possibly could be more tired of all the on-line gaming site commercials … but not by much. They just legalized it here in NC (like that stopped anybody) and all the platforms are promoting constantly. Couple that with political ad season, and I need my finger on the mute button rather often.

Nice swat by the Candyman!! (it was an AZ homer, but still).

      • Mark Moore

Don’t make me assign negative points to you, Old-school … 😐

      • Melvin

Guess I’m just stupid but never understood what he meant by that anyway. lol

  14. LarkinPhillips

Candy getting going, montas looking good. And enjoyable listening to Sam and Jim day. Can’t wait for Thursday.

    • Mark Moore

They are very easy to listen to. Nice rhythm.

  15. Mark Moore

Too bad CES got caught leaning … he’d probably be on 3rd (or maybe not).

  16. LarkinPhillips

TOOTBLAN by my CES… hope he gets that out of his system. I did like him laying off 2 quality off speed pitches with 2 strikes to draw the walk.

  17. GreatRedLegsFan

Total of 7 players in IL to start the season plus one suspended for the first half, hopefully they’ll be able to overcome that situation.

  18. GreatRedLegsFan

Is CES a potential 300/400/500 hitter?

    • AllTheHype

i’d be very surprised if he’s a .300 hitter, and def not .400 OBP. I would hope for .265/.340/.465 and that would be very very useful.

    • TR

CES is a natural hitter. He seems ready for a breakout year.

  19. DaveCT

    Joe Boyle Update:

    IP 18.1. H 13 BB 15. K 19, Era 5.89

    • AllTheHype

sounds about right. Are those statis from this year, or ’23, or ’22, or ’21?

    • AllTheHype

Only diff was at lower MiLB levels he could keep his ERA down and limit damage. He can’t do that at this level with the same lack of control/command.

  20. Mark Moore

A little redemption by Jake there

  21. Mark Moore

Another patient AB from Benson. I don’t mind Stuey trying to swipe 2nd. It was close as I saw it.

And Elly just put one in the air and watched it sail away. Day saying he didn’t even get all of it.

  22. Mark Moore

Steer hits a no-doubter!!! Not even an AZ dinger. He just smashed it.

  23. Mark Moore

    I’m enjoying Day’s interview/banter with Krall.

    • Mark Moore

Confidence builder for him and Frankie today.

  24. Mark Moore

Tony worked out of that little jam. Nice job!

  25. Mark Moore

Just saw the Shohei commercial for New Balance … didn’t realize NB had an on-line gambling platform … 😀

  26. Mark Moore

The Reds FB feed is showing pictures of some new food items. I could feel/hear my arteries hardening just reading the descriptions.

  27. Mark Moore

Sam as the color guy is REALLY good … his experience translates very easily from what I’m hearing, especially about the pitching (of course).

  28. GreatRedLegsFan

Fellow Lucas Sims is now the longest-tenured member of the Reds, joined on July 30, 2018.

  29. Mark Moore

Good game all the way around. I’ll be driving about game time on Thursday, so it will end up being audio only for me. Or maybe I’ll put it on video for my wife and just listen in.

  30. Frankie Tomatoes

It was great to be able to watch a game again. Thankfully the can’t watch the game portion of the year is over!

Frankie looked good today. If he can stay healthy and pitch like he has in the past I’m going to enjoy seeing him deal every five days. Christian Encarnacion Strand hits the ball hard so often. He is going to have a big year. I am so excited to get the real games started.
