News and Notes

Tony Kemp is out

Yesterday the Reds reassigned Tony Kemp to the minor leagues. It seems that today he opted out of his contract and is now a free agent. Cincinnati has now lost two players from their organization due to opt-outs, but they also gained reliever Justin Wilson this way after he opted out of his contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers last week.

Matt McLain update

Matt McLain, who was scratched from the lineup on Monday night with a sore shoulder, but it sounds like he’s going to be alright and could be back in the lineup tomorrow.

I wish they would just let Steer in Left and continue his growth there….

Would be nice to see Greene match his words with action today by mixing in these new pitches he’s been working on. I thought the quote by Bell yesterday about Abbott was telling. “For a young pitcher to come into camp and have clear goals on something to work on and still compete and compete for a spot on the team, you couldn’t really ask for much more,” Bell said. “A lot of pitchers at that point of their careers don’t have the confidence to do that. We’ve talked about Hunter (Greene) doing the same thing.”

I really wish the Reds would have their own broadcast teams showing spring games. Seems to be a cheap out.

  4. RED THUNDER

Starting to lose some of that depth now that some of the veterans are opting out. Lets hope everyone stays healthy! Erik Gonzalez, Miguel Hernandez, Mark Mathias, or Hernan Perez waiting in Louisville. My first choice would be Miguel! Go Reds

  5. RED THUNDER

Mike Ford is having himself a great spring training!

    • DaveCT

Ford’s power played well in Seattle, so, if he sticks, I imagine it’ll be just fine in the home bandbox.

Looks like something CLOSE to what the Opening Day lineup might be.

No Candelario, since he played last night (he’s tired!)
But they want to look at Martini, to see if he sticks.

With Friedl gone, I don’t think that Fairchild is “on the bubble” now.
But Martini, Ford and Bubba Thompson are…probably.

Spencer Steer playing 2nd base may be a clue about what they really think about Matt McLain.
Left hander starting for Angels, so this is the right handed platoon. Let’s see if EDLC can do anything against a left hander, batting right handed. He was lousy at the ML level last year right handed.

  7. Mark A Verticchio

My concern is, 9 days to go and the starters are barely stretched out and to say the least they will not have the line up we all expected. As I type this Greene gives up a long home run another concern.

  8. VaRedsFan

Last year Greene would often cruise through the 1st inning, then give it up in the 2nd.

    Similar scenario today.

  9. DaveCT

I used to see Miguel Sano at AA in New Britain, CT. Beehive Field. He looks about 75 lbs lighter. The guy has enormous power. I saw him hit one *over* the LF light tower once.

  10. VaRedsFan

Manager/coaches continue to not stress holding runners on.
1 with no throw, and 1 with no chance on the throw.

Greene is up to around 40 pitches through 2.

The question is what progress has the team made this off season. Lots of the symptoms are showing up again.

  11. VaRedsFan

Greene had a very good 3rd inning.
I haven’t seen any of the proposed 80-85 mph off speed he’s been working on, although there is no pitch speed graphic.

    • VaRedsFan

He did appear to use some off speed in the 4th.
      1-2-3 in an easy inning.

  12. VaRedsFan

    Hunter starts the 5th.
Two batted balls called hits…. although both should have fielded for outs, by Elly and Steer. Then a clean single plates 2.

  13. VaRedsFan

91 pitches for Hunter and his day is done. Deserved a better fate in his last inning.
They stole 4 bases, and it seems like they all scored. (The Angels do lead the Cactus League in SB’s)
Silver linings. Glad to get him stretched out, and he looks healthy.

  14. VaRedsFan

Stuey continues to have a strong Spring as he ropes his 2nd double of the game, plating 2

  15. VaRedsFan

Bubba makes it a 5 run inning as he obliterated that ball for a 2 run shot.

  16. VaRedsFan

Benson got plenty of action all against lefties so far to day.
Check swing dribbler down the 3rd base line that went for a hit.
His 4th AB, he did hit a line drive right at the 2nd Baseman.
Strikeout and HBP his other 2 AB’s

    • Melvin

That would be good enough if he keeps it up to stay in the lineup maybe down in the order against a lefty. Still shaky in the outfield but no more than Choo was.

      • Melvin

That last one should have been caught by somebody. Probably lost in the Arizona sun.

      • VaRedsFan

If he shows anything at all in Spring I would give him some chances. But history has not been kind to Benson vs Lefties. I would lean Bubba Thompson in RF with Stuey in CF….should Bubba make the 26 man cut.

  17. VaRedsFan

Hicks take Diaz deep for a 2 run shot.

  18. VaRedsFan

Benson in CF, makes his 1st blunder of the game. MLB popup to shallow center and his 1st step was back….just enough of a mistake to let the ball fall in between 4 Reds.

I’m perfectly OK giving him some PT in center during Spring. Same with Steer at 2B, and CES at 3rd also today, just to log some innings in those positions.

  19. VaRedsFan

Angels covering the whole game with 2 pitchers.
