News and Notes

Nick Martinez to throw today

After being scratched from his scheduled start on Thursday with what may have been “a rib out of place”, whatever that is, Martinez will throw to hitters in a simulated game/live bullpen according to’s Mark Sheldon.

Andrew Abbott on the mound

Sheldon is also reporting that Abbott, who was originally going to start today, will now pitch a simulated game, allowing Lodolo to pitch in the game that they’ll keep score in.

Another Spring Breakout Game

Cincinnati is playing a second Spring Breakout game tonight. The game will follow the big league game in Goodyear. You can watch it on We’ve got the lineup and more information over at if you’re looking for that.

Hoping Lodolo keeps trucking along with no setbacks. Having him ready to go on or shortly after Opening Day would be huge.

Don’t see them on Bally’s schedule

    • Doug Gray

Apparently I can’t read. I have updated the post. Thanks Grover.

Who determines the amount of spring training games broadcast? Is it the Reds saying we want to broadcast this many spring games or Bally saying we can sell time for this many spring games? I can’t believe that given the excitement from the players last year their wouldn’t be some interest in the spring games. If it is Bally determining amount of games, I think that I would find another TV partner after the contract expires

But we can at least put some of it on the Reds since they are partial owners of Bally Sports Ohio.

Given the lack of exciting programming on Bally during the day, can’t see why their would not be some viewership of the games. I maybe understand not putting games on during the weekend, since college BB going on, but a Tuesday afternoon or so would seem to be a prime time to put on a spring game.

What happened with Dunn? Is he injured or something? I may have missed that.

Also, why not play Dunn over Martini or Kemp?

    • Doug Gray

Dunn is back in minor league camp. If Friedl is injured for real and is going to miss a real amount of time, it’ll be interesting to see if the club brings Dunn back into big league camp (and maybe Hurtubise, too).

Listening on the radio. Is Friedl ok?

  6. GW

I’m at the game. He walked off not holding his shoulder or anything but who knows.

  7. LDS

Sprained wrist it seems. Don’t know how long Friedl will be laid up.

    • Harry Stoner

Hopefully not too long, nor rushed back.

I’ve been a slow convert on Friedl.

I’ve grown to like his game.

He’s got a unique blend of skills on the team.

Same here. I think Friedl snuck up on all of Baseball last year. A year ago, he was battling for a roster spot. Now MLB network recognized him as a top 10 Center Fielder. Pretty amazing. I hope he’s not just a shooting star ala Winker. He’s got to stay healthy.

On another note. I really would love to see Bell swap Elly and McLain in the lineup. I see McLain as the perfect two hole hitter. Like Friedl he excels in getting on base and having two table setters constantly getting on base (and stealing bases) in front of the sluggers is the way to go. And he also has some of the best contact skills to get Freidl in from scoring position. If Elly slugs to his potential this year Reds need to capitalize with has much on base talent in front of him as possible.
