Daylight savings time is upon us and that means games are starting an hour later than they had been earlier this spring. This afternoon the Cincinnati Reds will play “host” to their shared facility does, the Cleveland Guardians. Someone technically has to be the home team and it’s the Reds this time around. First pitch is set for 4:05pm ET. There is no television option today, but you can listen on 700 WLW on your radio.

News and Notes

Matt McLain and Nick Lodolo debut

After injuries have kept both guys off of the field this spring, they’re back. The Reds have a loaded bullpen for today’s game, indicating that they aren’t expecting Nick Lodolo to pitch very long. He’s been throwing 2.0 innings in his simulated games/live batting practice sessions, so he’ll likely at least match that, but he may not go any longer.

Matt McLain’s got less than three weeks to get regular season ready. He can’t afford any setbacks at this point, but if he doesn’t have any, he’s probably got enough time to be ready to go for opening day.

Jonathan India’s outfield experiment begins

After getting his first start over at first base in Friday’s game against the Dodgers, Jonathan India is now out in left field for the first time.

61 years ago today, a Reds minor leaguer entered a scoreless ST game in the 9th inning. He doubled twice and scored the winning run in a 1-0 win over the White Sox.

    You know him as #14.

    • Doug Gray

And now much of the fanbase under the age of 61 is ashamed that he’s associated with the organization.

      • Oldtimer

I’m not a fan of his but it is history. I worked with his brother-in-law in the summer 1969 to 1974.

      • VaRedsFan

In today’s society you pretty much have to separate player from the person….or else one would be a curmudgeon about every athlete, actor, President, ect.
It makes living easier without having to be angry about everything.

      • Tampa Red

I’m solidly under the age of 61 and feel no shame. There is so much more I’d say but this is a Reds baseball website so I’ll keep it to myself. Go Reds!

The essence of our system of justice is to let the punishment fit the crime. No one in the history of baseball has been overpunished like Pete Rose. Yes, betting on baseball, even if its for your team to win, is wrong. It should be punished. But Rose was punished to the same extent as the 1919 Black Sox who literally threw the world series. He is also punished far more severely than the steroid users of his era even though they have ruined baseball’s record book. Apart from what he did wrong, Pete Rose showed incredible determination and did more with what he had than most people ever to play the game. Players that I have spoken with who were on that BRM say that it was Rose more than anyone who established the team chemistry of the Reds. No one person was better than any other. While Rose’s contemporaries went largely unpunished for using drugs to jack themselves up, Rose, facing retirement, used gambling, something he learned from his father. Was it wrong? Of course. Does it deserve a lifetime ban? Absolutely no way. Let the punishment fit the crime. I brought my boys up on Pete Rose and I am very, very proud he was associated with my baseball team. (Let me add I absolutely love your work, too, Doug.)

    • Doc

He entered the game in the ninth inning, doubled twice… i presume they played extra innings in ST back then?

  2. Rex

I would really like to view this one on TV

    • Melvin

Yes. India in LF, McLain at 2B, and Lodolo pitching all would make it very nice to watch this game today. Plug in Steer and this could very well look like the opening day lineup.

      • Doug Gray

When I typed out the lineup I thought something similar, and then laughed to myself about how CES was hitting 8th (because the lineup is good enough where it’s not some egregiously terrible, non-sensical spot for just about anyone in the lineup).

      • Melvin

Yes. When Benson was hitting well and at the bottom of the lineup it seemed kind of crazy when the Reds weren’t winning and has lesser players at the top. Now there is always going to be good players at the bottom of the lineup so it doesn’t seem so crazy. It brings to mind a Concepcion quote in the World Series, “Why do I have to bat 8th”? Someone said, “I’ll give you seven reasons…..Rose, Griffey, Morgan….etc.” lol

      • Melvin

Having said that I doubt CES will see much time in the 8th spot unless he goes in a prolonged slump. If he does I don’t mind him hitting 8th or anyone else moving down in the lineup during his stretch of slump. The batting order shouldn’t be “etched in stone”. History tells us even Sparky did it with the Big Red Machine at times.

      • VaRedsFan

Waiting for someone to point out the foolish point of “but he can the 2nd cleanup”….lol

  3. Redsfanintx

I am in Goodyear for this week.
I am 55 yrs old. I am proud to say that I am a fan of Pete. I can say I saw him play as a kid!

    • Doug Gray

You a fan of the part where he embarrassed the organization multiple times between the gambling on the team and lying about it (including probably dozens of times lying to you as a part of his public denials) while calling anyone who called him out for lying about it, or for the underage girl thing?

      • RedBB

Pro sports are full of all sorts of slimy characters including rapists and mudrerers. Singling out Pete is an exercise in futility IMO.

      • Doug Gray

I don’t single out Pete. I call out all of them that are known to be slimy when I see them mentioned. It just so happens that on Redleg Nation that Pete is brought up more than other known slimy characters.

      • Redsfanintx

Doug I love your site and respect your opinion. I am never going to be his friend. The underaged girl bothers me more than the gambling and lying about it. I liked him as a player. I believe that he cared about winning and on most days he gave 100%. Today’s athlete doesn’t care about winning or the fans.
Once again this is my opinion and I can be totally wrong. Thank you for your hard work on both sites.

    • LDS

I’m considerably older and grew up a fan of #14, the ball player. I was never a fan of Pete the manager, nor Pete the man. Those are all separate. The player was a Hall of Famer. The manager, perhaps better than the recent examples, but certainly not noteworthy. The man? You wouldn’t want to live next door to him nor trust him to babysit the kids. As for embarrassing the organization? They do a more than adequate job of that themselves.

      • Melvin

Watching him play baseball was fun and enjoyable but I wouldn’t trust him to watch my cat for a day if I had one…..and I don’t like cats.

      • VaRedsFan

It’s so easy to separate the two (player/person). I wonder how people struggle with such things.

    • Rex

I agree, he is no worse than most of our sports “heroes”

I did not like him as a manager

      • Doug Gray

He’s is definitely worse than a lot of them as far as we know.

  4. Mark Moore

I see our “emergency CF’er” is in there today. I know he’s athletic enough to play there at times. Going to make the OF defense a tad weak I’m thinking with his partner in LF. I’m in the camp that really wishes we could watch this one.

Let’s take it to the Guardrails … 😀

    • Melvin

You made me just realize Friedl isn’t in there today either. 🙂 Still though only one “non regular” is playing and at least he’s batting 9th.

      • Mark Moore

Melvin, I’ll also remind you that the menu has T-bone/Porterhouse over charcoal with some Caesar salad (my wife’s homemade dressing) at the Moore house tonight.

  5. Mark Moore

1-2-3 with MattyMc getting some action and Lodolo turning in a solid performance. I wonder if he’s slated for 2 innings or 3 today?

    • MBS

I think 2, Brantley said if he goes 2 today, and has no ill effects tomorrow it would be a success.

  6. Roger Garrett

What Rose did was just awful and then to deny it was even worse if that’s possible. No getting around it for me.In this world today its often said what was right is now wrong and what is wrong is now right but what he did was and is always wrong.

    • Mark Moore

      +1,000

My appreciation for him as a player is greatly diminished for the reasons you state. There are others in that “club” for me as well. I don’t like the hyper-dollars traded around, but the cheating, lying, and terrible off-field behavior is even worse in my book. They are just plain jerks.

    • Old-school

      Welcome back Roger…need your voice.

  7. Mark Moore

That’s the way to grab an early lead.

  8. Mark Moore

OK, MattyMc … show us you are ready to play.

  9. Old-school

Daughter is yelling at me …why isnt this on TV???? I wanna see Jon and Elly and Matt and Lodolo….I said it costs too much to show apparently…. She said school costs too much but it doesn’t stop me???

    Got nothing to respond.

  10. Old-school

Lodolo 9 pitches 9 strikes 2 scoreless innings per game day!!!

    Thats great

    Thats a ST joke Doug.

  11. Mark Moore

3 solid innings from Lodolo. That’s a HUGE step forward.

    • Tom Diesman

Did Lodolo go 2 or 3? Can anyone confirm? Gameday has Lodolo tossing the 3rd, but all during the top of the 3rd, the radio announcers were saying that Suter was pitching.

      • Old-school

Thats pathetic if Suter pitched the 3rd and were following Lodolo online.smh

    • BK

Per the Cowboy, Lodolo went Two innings. Suter pitched the third. Gameday appears to be in error.

      • Mark Moore

Thanks for the clarification. I did hear “Suter” on the radio feed, so it was 2 for Nick. They just fixed it on the box score feed.

  12. Old-school

India was really good as a leadoff hitter

    I wouldn’t mind India #1 Freidl 2 McLain 3

  13. Old-school

9u travel teams have better game logs than the Reds

  14. Mark Moore

Straw got deked into a TOOTBLAN.

  15. Old-school

    Im calling it

India and Stephenson are back as hitters

    • JB WV

As long as they stay healthy. That’s been the problem

    • Mark Moore

As Carl the Assistant Greenskeeper would say … “He got all of that one!”

    • LarkinPhillips

That would be huge for the Reds IF they returned to 2021 form. IF even half of last years rookies take a step forward, this lineup would be top 3 in MLB at end of year.

      • VaRedsFan

That’s what I’m looking for LP. Progressions instead over any sophomore slumps.

    • VaRedsFan

It would be a huge boost, but India’s condition that will not get better, and Ty is a catcher.
I’ll settle for “achieve nearly as good offensively, to their rookie seasons”

      • MBS

The good news is that India doesn’t have to go everyday now. He can play 70% of the time, and the rest that he gets should make him more productive.

  16. Mark Moore

Had to switch over to my phone for the WLW feed … what came on first was a basketball game 😮

    Weird

    • Andrew Brewer

WLW switched over to Drake vs. Indiana St. basketball mid-game. Luckily there was a broadcast on MLB using the Guardian announcers … The Reds have let a couple games get away in the 8th and 9th using some less than ready arms.
