Andrew Abbott

From July 31st through the end of August, Abbott struggled. He made six starts and had an ERA of 6.67. He struggled with his control, walking 15 batters in 27.0 innings pitched. But in his last start he allowed one run in 6.1 innings with just two walks against the Cubs in a Reds 2-1 victory.

Lefties haven’t been able to do much this season with Abbott on the mound. They have just three walks and 24 strikeouts while posting an OPS just over .500 against him. Right-handed hitters have not hit for much average, but they have a good walk rate against him and have hit for a solid amount of power.

Drew Rom

The rookie left-hander is returning home to pitch for the first time. Rom was born in Cincinnati and was drafted out of Highlands High School in Fort Thomas by the Orioles in the 4th round of the 2018 draft (acquired by the Cardinals at this years trade deadline). This will be his 4th big league start. In his most recent start he allowed three runs with three walks and a strikeout in 4.2 innings to Pittsburgh.

The splits against Rom are interesting. He holds lefties to a lower average, but he does walk them more frequently and they hit for more power than righties do. Right-handed hitters, though, hit for a high average and have a good walk rate against him – so they’re getting on base a lot against him.

News and Notes

Joey Votto and Jonathan India to Triple-A

The Reds could be close to adding Joey Votto and Jonathan India back to the big league roster, but first they’ll be making a stop in Louisville. And that stop begins tonight when both of them join the Bats to start their rehab assignments. We’ve got a few more details from earlier today right here if that’s what you’re looking for.

Fernando Cruz is back, Kevin Herget DFA’d

Cincinnati has designated reliever Kevin Herget for assignment to make room on the active roster for Fernando Cruz. After missing time on the Covid-19 injured list, Cruz is back and healthy.

Looks like the best lineup anyone could possibly put together with this roster. Only a whiner or a complainer could find anything negative to say about it. Go Reds!

  2. DW

Really not a fan of the lineup tonight. Oh well. That Cardinals lineup sure looks potent, though. Hopefully Abbot is on and the offense can give him some good run support.

  3. RedAlert

Bader, Fairchild and Senzel starting … David Bell special in the midst of a playoff chase ….
Can’t make this stuff up … don’t care if they are all right handed bats are not … they are NOT your best options

    • Mike Adams

They are the best options if you worship at the altar of handedness–ask Bell

  4. VaRedsFan

Love that Abbott got to 0-2 on Edman and went right after him.
    Strike 3 called.
    No nibbling.

  5. Old-school

Its really amazing the ripple effect of not having McLain and India in the lineup playing everyday. Those 2 players not playing push bell into handedness fantasy manager

    I miss McLain

  6. VaRedsFan

    Doesn’t Stephenson bat right handed?
That qualifies him to DH right?
    His bat is needed.

    • Jim Walker

Got to consider that Bell’s goal is just to stay in the game vs LH pitching and make hay when the other team brings in a RH pitcher.

Just look at his lineup construction and it jumps out who he wants to drop where into the lineup to get to his typical LH batting order.

    • Mark Moore

Well … pretty much what we might have expected. Thanks for doing the research.

  8. Daytonnati

One strike away from getting out unscathed. A walk, an error, and a 3-run bomb.

    • Jim Walker

They scored that Arenado play a hit and an error to advance the man to 3rd which I think was a fair call. It was a hard hit ball Marte knocked it down on the line and should have eaten it.

The real key to the inning as almost always was the walk. Throw Goldschmidt a strike at 2/2 or 3/2 and even if he nails it, the score is just 1/0 with 2 outs and nobody on.

  9. Mark Moore

I guess I picked the wrong time to get home from dinner and tune in.

At least we get to come from behind now, right?

    • Daytonnati

I think it is required on Friday nights?

    • Jim Walker

Blame it on Apple TV showing up again. 😉

  10. VaRedsFan

    Geez…got the 1st 2 easily.
    Walk
    Error on Marte
    3 run shot.

    That error was massive

    • Jim Walker

Arenado’s ball was (I think correctly) scored as a hit. The E was for the lead runner going to 3B. The key play in the inning was the w2 out walk. IMO

      • VaRedsFan

True on the scoring of the play.
But that play needs to be made.

  11. Indy Red Man

Come on. You just can’t throw a meatball down the middle there. Working uphill again

    • Jim Walker

+1000 And the 2 out walk with bases empty.

  12. RedAlert

    Let’s play from
Behind again …. Unfreaking believable …
    AWFUL pitch

  13. VaRedsFan

Going to take another Friday Night magic city connect comeback.

    • Daytonnati

Nothing the Cardinals would like more than to ruin our season.

  14. Mark Moore

OK, I’m all wired up on the big screen (have I mentioned I really hate the alternate feed games like this one?) so both my wife and I can watch. Got to love spotting the WLB Dirty Birds a 3-run lead.

  15. Mark Moore

And we’re dealing with another Chumpire and his Bizzarro Zone again tonight … just shoot me now.

That’s something we can’t pin on HDTBell 😀

  16. Mark Moore

Who is the team calling this game? My first impression is they could be a good substitute for a tranquilizer.

    • VaRedsFan

Alex Faust (play-by-play), Ryan Spilborghs (analyst), and Tricia Whitaker (sideline reporter)

      Spilly is decent

      • Mark Moore

        Thanks.

I’m still not a fan of the AppleTV format with interviews, mic’d up, etc. I find it distracting.

But at least I’m watching baseball on a Friday night. So that’s something.

      • Mark Moore

Never heard of any of them. I’m not a hockey fan, but I can’t even imagine Faust calling a game.

  17. Mark Moore

Marte made that one pretty close.

  18. Mark Moore

And a Bizzarro call goes our way 😮

  19. VaRedsFan

The Bader-tax at leadoff comes home to roost

    • Ted Alfred

Yeah it was your rather had up in that situation, Fraley Friedl or Bader.

It seems like every time Bell throws out one of these goofy handededness lineups the Reds get shut out or score one run and get stomped, but he never learns his lesson.

  20. Mark Moore

I’m second guessing of course, but I’m thinking TySteve ends up safe at 2nd in that situation. Then again, the way he’s been hitting, he might have blasted one out to RF.

  21. Kevin H

Bader hasn’t impressed me so far. Wouldn’t shock me if he is released when India comes back.

  22. JB

I couldn’t stand Bader on the Cardinals and I can’t stand him on the Reds. Right now he is worse than Skip Schumacher. Rom can’t throw a strike and throws a ball on first pitch so what’s does Bader do but swing on the second pitch. BADER SUCKS

  23. Old-school

Watching the game with my daughter on her computer.

She literally started laughing hilariously with David Bell interview.

“ yeah. Put together some good at bats… score some runs…beat the other team”

  24. Kevin H

Again a another strike called a ball and a extended ab that results in a walk.

Should of had a strike out and back to dugout.

When is MLB going to hold umpires responsible. It’s hard I know to call balls and strikes, however it has become very very bad

    • Mark Moore

      5th of Never …

They are supposed to be accountable now. But the evidence we see game after game indicates they are not. Only some combination of robo-zone and challenge will force a change.

  25. Mark Moore

Well, that does it for me, friends. Small screen only with no audio going forward. I’ve got a lot of other things I can watch.

    Maybe tomorrow.

Man, I really hate the WLB Dirty Birds!!

    • Mark Moore

Full disclosure … that was NOT a Clete from me … 😀

  26. RedAlert

Ballgame – walks man and another 0-2 pitch that gets hit for RBI : these pitchers on this staff NEVER LEARN

    Derrick Johnson …LOL

  27. Old-school

    Ball game

    This is a Clete

Bell playing guys hard to root for. At least friedl fraley benson stephenson rested while the non core Hessian mercenaries who wont be here next year play and lose

  28. magi210

Well, there’s a start to come back.

  29. LDS

Sure glad the Reds have that really, easy schedule

  30. Gpod

When I saw they said reds have the easiest schedule of all the teams competing for the last wildcard, I thought it will be trouble because, this is in Bell’s wheelhouse ….see 2 years ago

  31. Old-school

    Partial clete

    Renfro a nice pickup

  32. Indy Red Man

Senzel leading off instead of Bader and it’s probably a different story. They’re fighting though. The energy has been a lot better

  33. VaRedsFan

MLB Network had a segment this morning about automated strikezone

Jason Stark said they now have tech that can account for different player sizes.
The whole panel agreed that it needs to happen. But they also said that despite the need, the league moves so slow on such issues.

    • Mark Moore

I read they would “feed it individual profiles” which I think is key to making it work. Perhaps by the time we have a new ownership group?

  34. Dennis Westrick

Not much better where I am at tonight! At the Louisville Bats game and Brett Kennedy is getting beat like a drum! Four (4) runs allowed and still in the top of the 2nd inning!

  35. VaRedsFan

Elly with some major league leather on that play

  36. Melvin

Looks like India walked and scored in his first AB. Votto doubled home two runs. Both playing 2B and 1B respectfully.

    • Melvin

For those who might be wandering Newman had a hit and scored on Votto’s double. All three in the top of the order.

    • Melvin

Barrero sitting tonight with Newman playing SS. lol

    • Melvin

How is that a non reviewable play according to the announcers?

    • JB

Guy gets a hit and still stinks. Hopefully they bring in a righty and get Friedl in the game. Hopefully India will be back by Monday and Bader will be gone. Cardinal players make me puke.

  37. Mark Moore

Probably the right call NOT to challenge. Looks like he did slide past as he tried to evade the tag and not enough to flip the call anyway.

    • Melvin

How many times has that happened to our players this year? Too many?

  38. RedAlert

You can’t make that out there Bader !!! This team gives away so many outs on basepaths …. Constantly !

  39. RedsGettingBetter

Harrison Bader has been depressing, he is not hitting and when he makes it hit then kills the rally running… Holly sh..

  40. VaRedsFan

That was a backbreaker…sliding 1 inch off the bag. He made a perfect slide too.
    Walker made a great play.

  41. Melvin

Little Big League play by Billy Heywood works again. 😀

  42. VaRedsFan

So in a weird way, the Bader overslide opened up 2B and allowed the double steal and the gift run.

    Silver linings.

    • Melvin

Yeah. He knew exactly what he was doing. 😉

  43. Kevin H

Oh here we go with the bullpen. Pitch all the rested guys. Lol

  44. Melvin

Man. How many times have we seen collisions or near collisions this year? Fundamentals gentlemen.

  45. JB

I think Maile looked at the bench and gave them the stink eye for nobody saying anything about CES coming on strong for that pop-up. Got lucky there.

  46. Mark Moore

Bit of a redemption inning there for Farmer.

Now back to work with the bats. Where is Jobu when you need him?

  47. Dennis Westrick

Votto & India in the Louisville Bats lineup here tonight! Kennedy has given up 7 runs in just 3 innings!

    • Melvin

I see he’s given up three walks too. He’s endearing himself to your heart I’m sure. 😀

  48. Kevin H

I often wonder why not just have a right, left, right, left batting order.

  49. Melvin

I like these “going the other way ground ball hits”. Good job. 🙂

  50. old-school

This just in. Mariners mashing the Rays. Reds took 2/3 Orioles best team in AL and 2/3 Mariners best team in Al west and 4/6 Dodgers 2/3 Rangers and swept the Astros and won season series against Cubs and Dbacks . I dont think there’s a narrative on this team except they need healthy starting pitching and a healthy McLain and India hitting every day.

  51. Mark Moore

On an unrelated front, the unfolding saga of Strasburg’s “retirement” and the “yes/no presser” is like watching a train wreck. I’m hoping we can avoid that kind of fiasco with Joey Votto, but I fear we won’t.

    • Kevin H

Votto doesn’t seem like the type of guy who wants much fanfare.

Of course I could be wrong

    • JB

Votto has stated he wants to keep playing next year. I can only hope it’s not here. Love the guy but it’s over.

  52. RedAlert

How many have the Reds left in base this game !!! Can’t get the big hit !!!!
Just can’t continue to play from behind every freaking game…

  53. RedsGettingBetter

Reds team LOB is 10 in 6 innings… They can’t hit in clutch situation…

    • Mark Moore

Our boys do seem to have that as a recurring theme.

    • RedAlert

Man that’s brutal …. Thanks for that info !

Too bad Bell didn’t run out a better lineup to start out with …. No urgency from this man till it’s too late…

      • Kevin H

Reds scored 4 runs with the right handed lineup in.

Bell didn’t strikeout with the bases loaded, nor did Bell give up 6 runs

      • RedAlert

He’s a bad manager period any way you slice it …

    • JB

Stephenson at 1B. So we have downgraded defensively at 3 positions.

      • Melvin

Eh No big deal. lol We’ve only got three innings to go. What could possible go wrong? :0

  54. Mark Moore

Oh that defensive line-up … I get the moves with the hitters. But even in a small outfield like GABP, that’s kind of challenging. Hoping it doesn’t cost us anything.

And for those who wanted to see TySteve back at 1B … 😛

    • VaRedsFan

I agree with giving Ty Steve a chance there in a big spot.
      Worry about defense later

    • Melvin

Want to see him catching…the whole game while he’s been hot.

  55. RedAlert

And here comes bullpen with hit by pitch and walk ….. amazing just amazing

    Sickening

  56. Mark Moore

Really, really, REALLY need some Bike Helmets here.

    But … nope …

  57. Mark Moore

And after we cannot convert with bases loaded, we implode from the mound.

Maile is taking a beating tonight.

  58. RedAlert

Par for the course with these bullpen guys …. Clown show

  59. JB

That might be the dagger. Reds have left 90 on base tonight.

  60. Dennis Westrick

    If it’s not a walk, it’s a HBP!

    • RedAlert

Thanks Cruz – awesome pitching … slammed the door on your own team

  61. Melvin

Easy schedule not so easy tonight so far unfortunately.

  62. Mark Moore

And I’m back to the small screen and no sound.

Hanging on by a thread here. Feeling a Clete loading.

  63. VaRedsFan

Just another example of Bell taking out an effective reliever for no reason

    • RedAlert

Exactly !!! He can’t help himself man …. Dude never learns anything and never gonna change his thought process ….how he
wrangled a 3 year extension is beyond
      comprehension

  64. dimondfvr

Someone tell the Cardinals that we’ve reached the easy part of the schedule!

  65. Redlegs1869

I know. This is a positive comment only night. So tonight won’t decide the season, right? I just despise the Dirty Birds and continually losing to them, even when they’re almost 20 games under 500 and in last place and we’re at home with everything to play for. We just seem to lay eggs at inopportune times. Whoops. I did it. Maybe they’ll rally for the win. Maybe they’ll win the series. Then again…2021 memories loom.

    • JB

Exactly. I would rather watch CSPAN reruns than watch the Cards beat up their little brother, the Reds. Then they go get Bader. Despise that guy.

      • Melvin

Hey JB. What do you think about Bader? Like him? 😉

    • Mark Moore

No, tonight in and of itself won’t kill the season. But a consistent pattern of “tonights” will.

Proof will be in the Saturday and Sunday games. Oh, and the WLB Dirty Birds got in after 2AM, so they had a short night. They’ll be fully rested for Saturday and Sunday.

  66. JB

Those two runs were huge. Team looks defeated.

  67. Dennis Westrick

George Foster at the Bats game tonight autographs! Looks like Yahtzee could still play!

  68. VaRedsFan

Wasting Antone in a 4 run game?
    Wow

    • RedAlert

      That’s just inexcusable too …. What’s his
reasoning for that ? … never seen a manager completely butcher usage of a bullpen like this guys does ….. zero common sense
      thinking

      • RedAlert

Guess it didn’t make any difference lol

  69. dimondfvr

Not only do we lay eggs, we also get eggs on our faces! Looks like the Cards are gonna poach another win, but let’s not criticize Bell, We’ll be over easy on him! (Sorry)

  70. Jeremiah

Cards are a tough match up for the Reds. Reds are really streaky too. I’m not sure the Reds are gonna be in the race going into the last 5 games or so if they don’t start getting some 6-7 inning outings out of the starters. Their pen is good enough to make the playoffs but not continually pitching 4-5 innings every other game.

  71. Kevin H

I have a question if Bell is so bad, then how have the reds stayed in the playoff chase??

    • VaRedsFan

With a better manager, they’d have 10-12 (very conservative…might be more) more wins and be comfortably in the playoffs.

      • Mark Moore

        +5,000

I have to believe that’s a probable number. And even at half that, we’re in a much better spot.

Echoes of 2021 continue to haunt like walks.

      • Kevin H

So by that logic the pitching staff giving up 9 runs, or a starter going 4 innings giving up 6 runs wouldn’t happen?

Stephenson striking out with bases loaded wouldn’t happen with a better manager?

      • VaRedsFan

And he didn’t even cost them the game tonight….just a chance to keep it close enough to comeback. One of the hidden parts of close games.

      • Kevin H

I do understand what you are saying. And sure I get frustrated.

I myself just believe the players are the ones who need to perform better. If I sounded rude I apologize as I wasn’t meaning it that way

For record this game has been frustrating

      • VaRedsFan

        I hear ya bro.
I’m not one to say that everything Bell does is wrong.
It’s just enough of a tax that adds up over the course of a season that if you just miss, it becomes like you said…frustrating

    • Mark Moore

      +1,000

I’m old enough to get that reference.

  72. Dennis Westrick

Running out of games to solidify a Wild Card spot! Cards are awful, you’ve got Abbott as your starter and you’re losing 8-4! Perfect! Only 19 games left after tonight!

    • Ted Alfred

So by Kevin H’s reasoning, it’s always on the players to play better if they lose, therefore the manager has literally no effect on the outcome of the game. Even though the manager makes out the lineups, decides where everybody’s playing, what the hitting order is, makes all the Bullpen decisions, somehow none of those decisions actually affect the game? Got it

      • Kevin H

Did Bell allow 9 runs? Did Bell leave 12 men on base?

How have the reds made this far if Bell sucks so bad according to some on here

  73. Mark Moore

That’s a fully loaded Clete for me.

    Catch you all tomorrow.

  74. Jeremiah

Reds offense has been better recently which gives some hope…some missed opportunities tonight hitting but maybe they can continue get on base more moving forward… I don’t want to say it’s obvious but it seems like Abbott is fading. That’s a big blow to the Reds hopefully no injury issues for him… I don’t know what to expect from this team. Just my opinion but I don’t think the schedule matters much. They just won games they probably shouldn’t have went against two pretty good teams. I think it’s more mental and mindset going down the stretch here. That’s a lot of competition though everyone’s going for that last spot or two.

    • Melvin

Maybe we’d do better on a “hard” schedule. 😀

  75. VaRedsFan

They out hit the Cards 10-9, and out walked them 5-4

    Outscored by 5 though 🙁

  76. Melvin

Well that was a whole lot of fun. 🙂

    • Kevin H

Must win game tomorrow? In your book?

      • Melvin

It’s getting to the point they’re all must wins.

  77. RedsGettingBetter

This was a really bad game from the Reds tonight… Bad pitching, bad defense, bad offense… sheee…

  78. Kevin H

Well Abbott giving up 6 runs didn’t help. Cruz being wild didn’t help.

12 men left on base didn’t help, nor did leaving the bases loaded twice.

Well tomorrow in my book is a must win.

  79. West Larry

Ugly game tonight. Twelve left on base, but we would have half of those score to be in this game. let’s forget this one and get them tomorrow.
