The Cincinnati Reds made a set of roster moves today. Lyon Richardson has been recalled from Triple-A and he will be today’s starting pitcher. The team optioned reliever Casey Legumina to Triple-A to clear a spot on the roster for Richardson. Cincinnati also announced that reliever Alex Young was sent to Triple-A for a rehab assignment.

The move to call up Lyon Richardson comes as no surprise. Cincinnati has had him listed as the probable starter for several days now, even after he was returned to the minor leagues after his previous start. It will be the 4th start for Richardson in the big leagues. Each start has gotten better, with his last start on September 1st in the second game of the doubleheader against the Chicago Cubs being one where he allowed two earned runs in 4.2 innings. He has struggled a bit with control, walking 11 batters in his 8.0 innings.

The return to the big leagues for Casey Legumina was a short one. He was called up on Monday and then pitched last night against Seattle, throwing a shutout 8th inning. Now he’s heading back to the minor leagues. Someone had to be the guy to get sent out and it was him.

Alex Young has been out for the last two weeks with a hamstring injury. He last pitched on August 24th against Arizona, giving up two runs in an inning of work. The lefty will join the Bats in Louisville tonight. His rehab assignment, assuming he remains healthy, is expected to be a short one.

Is there a transaction cost to option moves? Room, board, and bus tickets are adding up for some of these guys.

I am sure all the details or where to go to find them are to be found here:

      I’d suggest this as a starting point “ARTICLE VII—Expenses and Expense Allowances . . . . . . . . . . . 22”

That’s page 22 of the actual document as it is numbered, not the .pdf file numbering. 😉

Penny pinching advice from the guy who wanted to ship out EDLC, CES and Marte last week.

Bell’s management skills aren’t the only ones that are are dubious.

      • LDS

@Harry, I still want to send them down, especially EDLC. He’s barely hitting .200/against LHers with a SO rate above 40%. So yes send him down and work on his hitting. Trial by fire isn’t optimizing his development. It’s about next year and the years after. And BTW, it’s not penny pinching, it’s recognizing that they are incurring expenses precipitated by a failure to acquire ML talent at the trade deadline.

I hope Antone isn’t used tonight. He’s a valuable reliever. I think we should be extra cautious with him,

Farmer too right? He didn’t pitch last night. We should have enough arms.

      • TJ

Farmer had 26 pitches on Monday. I’m not sure exactly how Bell uses him. Is a day off enough for Farmer? Is he used full on or would he be limited in pitches or batters?

I doubt Diaz is available, which means Gibaut or Sims is likely our closer tonight. Richardson getting through 5 would be real nice, but if things go south I could see the white flag duo of Duarte and Herget.

SF has been flat for a long while and getting pounded again. Arizona is down 4-1 early. The Reds can really take advantage, but a sweep will be tough. Gilbert is 8-1 on the road with a 3.15 or something. I’m sure we’ll battle though. They seem to have new life from somewhere

    Just an interesting tidbit on 3 starters’ ERA since the MLB trade deadline this year;
    – Giolito- 6.89
    – Rich Hill – 8.53
    – Jack Flaherty – 6.66

There were some decent prospects traded for those 3 guys. Lorenzen is faring a bit better with an era of 4.97. Former Cardinal Jordan Montgomery in Texas is doing the best of the starters traded at 3.60.

For the record, I wanted Krall to make a trade for a starter. Turns out, Krall knows what he’s doing. I’d like to see us take a run at Montgomery this off-season – but he is a dreaded Boras client.

Texas DFA’d Glenn Otto yesterday, in 2022 he made 27 starts for the Rangers with a 4.64 ERA as a 26 year old. Got squeezed out of their rotation this spring due to the Rangers off season SP acquisitions and then missed the first half of 2023 due to a strained lat. He’s got 6 GS and 4 games in relief with a 3.38 ERA at AAA this year and struggled with a 10.13 ERA in 10.2 IP of relief with the Rangers this year. He could be someone who could help the Reds finish out the month as a swing man and at 27 years old with 2 options remaining he could be a good depth piece moving forward. Look forward to seeing who claims him.

Padres claimed Otto before he made it to Reds, there were about 3 teams between them and the Reds.
