Lyon Richardson

The Reds are going to give Richardson another spot start tonight. It will be his second start and he’ll be looking to perform a little better this time around after allowing four runs in 3.0 innings in his big league debut earlier this month.

Take the splits for what they are worth – a little, but not a lot given that most of it’s come from the minor leagues – but this season he’s been much better against lefties than he has against righties.

Reid Detmers

The month of August has been a wild one for the lefty. He allowed seven earned runs in his first two starts of the month, covering just 6.1 innings, and he allowed five homers in those two games. But his last time out he allowed one hit in 7.1 shutout innings against Texas.

When it comes to the splits, Detmers has some reverse ones going on this year. Left-handed hitters haven’t gotten nearly as many opportunities against him as righties have, but they are hitting 50 points higher and slugging 142 points higher. Right-handed hitters walk more, but that’s about it. They don’t hit for average or for much power.

    Spot starter vs. journeyman
    Both bullpens burned.

All the makings of a 2-1 game.

  2. Ted Alfred

Okay…Marte leading off instead of Friedl who is swinging a great bat right now vs a LHP with splits that favor LH? Martini looked good game #1 and Hopkins has looked basically lost, although he did hit one good to CF game 1. At least Votto is sitting. Not loving the line-up…again. I think this is a really, really important game to finally get some momentum going. Need to treat this game like a must-win situation to make the post season… not a game we can just afford to play everybody cuz we already won game #1

    • Melvin

“Need to treat this game like a must-win situation to make the post season… ”

      I concur

  3. Brian Rutherford

Reds sign Trey Mancini to a minor league deal.

    • Mark Moore

A little puzzling. But he costs us basically nothing.

  4. LDS

A must win game – that that most aren’t at this point. Winning puts pressure on the Cubs. Maybe it happens butIm not betting on it.

    • BuzzKutter

If they can keep the strikeouts to a minimum the sweep will be fulfilled. Make stuff happen!

  5. Mark A Verticchio

Bell needs to realize how big this game is because I’m not sure he does.

    • Ted Alfred

That’s honestly my worry. When you been scuffling like we have for 6 weeks I don’t know how you wouldn’t understand the opportunity to grab real momentum if you win this game heading into Arizona. It’s a huge game psychologically for this team, but whether that dawns on our fearless leader…who knows?

  6. Melvin

Kind of cool we have rookies 1-5 in the lineup.

  7. Melvin

Hey! Somebody tell Ohtani his arm needs rest. He shouldn’t be batting. 😉

  8. Melvin

    Moose batting 3rd?….Thank you. 🙂

  9. Bet on Red

No home runs…. infact no hits… this is an improvement from last time

  10. Luke J

I wonder if it has ever happened that a 3rd baseman has an unassisted putout a 2 different bases in the same inning before today?

  11. Indy Red Man

Kids got rough edges, but atleast he’s mixing pitches. Up to 99 in the first inning

  12. RedsGettingBetter

Since Richardson has pitches count limit about 65-70 , that’s mean 3-4 innings so it will need a reliever eating 2 plus frames to reach the 7th or 8th to give the ball to Sims. I wonder how they are gonna figure it out… Farmer, Cruz and Young pitched significantly in the first game…Gibaut threw a few pitches yesterday and today ….

  13. Melvin

Hmmmm Strike three looking with two on Stephenson. Hmmmm

  14. Melvin

Hopkins gets hit? Good job. 🙂

  15. Ted Alfred

Stephenson is so bad at the plate anymore that I’m actually not that disappointed with a strikeout because he at least he didn’t hit a 2 bouncer right at the shortstop for a double play… it’s truly pathetic to be okay with that result. On a full count he swungs at ball 4 inside, then fouls another off, then takes strike 3 right down the middle. By the way, really don’t understand Benson hitting behind Hopkins and Stephenson…. just really can’t make sense of it.

  16. Ted Alfred

I think I’ve seen all I need to see of Hopkins… time to send him back down to Triple A

  17. Daytonnati

Richardson looks like the bar bouncer that you would listen very carefully to. 🙂

  18. Indy Red Man

Hopkins. He’s like Senzels little brother. Can we get rid of him please

  19. BuzzKutter

Hopkins doesn’t even act like he wants to be up here.

    • Melvin

Kind of looks like a teenager trying to drive a car for the first time. Something like that. No offense to him but we need ballplayers. We’re in a pennant race. He’s not hitting well anyway. Might as well us Siani. At least he’s a good outfielder.

      • SteveAReno

should have kept Henry Ramos. Bad move

  20. Bow Red

    Am I banned from posting?

Did I miss something in registration?

  21. Ted Alfred

Freidl makes the slightly tougher play look easy, meanwhile Hopkins looks like he doesn’t have a clue where the ball is in relation to himself on a similar play

  22. Indy Red Man

Most of these young hard throwers won’t come inside which really lessens their stuff. Jam the bottom of the lineup and get some quick outs here and there

  23. Indy Red Man

Outer half again. Inside corner and it’s a dribbler to CES

  24. Melvin

Why do I not feel good about facing Ohtani here?

  25. Melvin

Friedl saves the day that time!! Diving catch!!!

  26. BuzzKutter

You would think these triple A guys would be hungry to make plays like that. Hopkins looked.like he was jogging over again.

    • Melvin

Yeah I know. Hopkins had no chance. It’s like he’s in a daze or something. In awe of the moment playing in the majors.

  27. RedsGettingBetter

Lack of command keeps Richardson walking on the tightrope

  28. Melvin

Friedl looks better with a hair cut and shave. 🙂 Maybe it makes him faster even. 🙂

  29. Mark A Verticchio

Hopkins should not be in the line up.

  30. Indy Red Man

They hit rockets that inning, but only 1. Let’s get some offense

    • VaRedsFan

One of the few that changes his approach with 2 strikes.

    • Melvin

I love McLain but I’d have to give team MVP to Steer this year at least so far simply for the fact he hits so well while playing so many positions. (LF, RF, 3B, 2B, 1B)

    • DW

Yep. I was thinking the same thing. He is just solid and reliable.

      • Ted Alfred

Yep about a month ago I said the two guys the Reds should think about doing early long-term contracts with are McClain and Steer. The other rookies still have way too much to prove, but those two guys are going to be really good Major League ball players for a long time

  31. BuzzKutter

Good piece of hitting. Wide open mole on the right side.

  32. Melvin

At some point in this game (hopefully soon) we’ve got to replace Hopkins with Siani before he costs us the game one way or another.

    • DW

Yeah, seems like he is playing with a fear of failure, making him timid.

    • BuzzKutter

Completely agree. He just doesn’t look good out there. But now Friedl is limping around.

  33. DW

Richardson has the stuff to be dang good. Lots of potential there. Hopefully he can stay healthy, get experience, and put it all together in the future.

  34. BuzzKutter

Stepho, wow finally makes something happen.

  35. LT

    Friedl drilled that one. #Frieldcanhitleftie

    • Ted Alfred

That was huge. I was just happy to see the sac fly deep enough to get the run in, so the Home Run was an extra bonus. His next ab was a ball to deep CF…maybe he’s going to start hitting again

  36. DW

Friedl needs to be kept at the top of the order regardless of which hand the pitcher throws with.

    • Ted Alfred

Yep he’s over .300 versus lefties. I just can’t understand dropping him down to six and hitting Marte lead off….just makes no sense. It’s the first thing I mentioned before the game started

  37. JB

Hopkins with a hit. Would have been safe if he didn’t overslide.

  38. Indy Red Man

Stephenson finally does something. We need somebody new to get hot

  39. VaRedsFan

    sliding lessons tomorrow.
    zero dark 30

  40. LT

TS been contributing the last 4-5 games, a couple singles, a HR the other day, throwing out a runner the other game, now a HR. He’s been doing better than Benson out of the bottom of line up. When we have Steer or Frield part of bottom of line up, good things happen. But we can’t have Frield there.

    • JB

Can’t have Steer there. Guy leads the team in everything.

      • LT

He was playing there and producing when we had India and Fraley 🙂 obviously we need him where he is now without those two bats, but I think the bottom of line up has been bad without him.

  41. Indy Red Man

Couple inches from the cycle there
    Triple HR double single

  42. VaRedsFan

When the team was going good, It was a different person every game.
It’d be great if they got back to that.

  43. Melvin

Alright. We’re playing like we want to win. 🙂 4-1 now

  44. LT

Stringing hits together starting from bottom of line up, that’s a he formula for success. May and June, nostalgia.

    • BuzzKutter

Yes indeed. Good plate discipline without the strikeouts.

  45. Mark A Verticchio

Running and more running more May and June nostalgia.

    • RedAlert

This young man Richardson has a power arm – if he can harness his stuff he could really help this team down the stretch

  46. LT

Who is this Richardson guy? He has more pitches in his arsenal than Ashcraft and Greene combined. And he has guts, fills up the strike zone. Quite a surprise.

    • Ozzie

Will they bring him back out for the 5th?

    • Redgoggles

He’s not Luke Weaver. That’s a good start for me.

  47. Old-school

Where is the Nick Krall didnt get giolito and lorenzo crowd to win the world series?????

    Come on now

    • Redgoggles

This will age better if Hunter can return to form very soon.

  48. LT

Would that fly ball from TS a HR at GBP?

  49. RedlegScott

Richardson’s time was obviously up. Pretty good job, though. Now what? Who’s left? Lol

  50. DW

Things have gotten pretty quiet in here. Must have lost most of those in the eastern and central time zones.

  51. JB

Strand has to learn to lay off the crap.

  52. Melvin

Time to get your best defense in the outfield Mr. Bell. One run game. hint hint

    • JB

Yep and that doesn’t mean moving Benson to left.

  53. LarkinPhillips

The next three innings are a direct result of Bell managing the pen poorly the first game. Sims will be stretched to cover the 7th. 8th is a mystery. Will have to be someone making their second appearance today. Diaz for the 9th. Pray we don’t go extras.

    • Brian Rutherford

Okay. You would have done it differently. What would you have done? I think he made good decisions. abbot barely went 5. He HAD to use the pen.

Richardson couldn’t go any more. He HAD to go to the pen.

What would you have done differently?

      • LarkinPhillips

I would have let Farmer pitch more than 13 pitches. He had retired 5 straight with weak contact. I would have let young pitch more than 8 pitches. That saves you some arms for the second game.

  54. RedlegScott

Giving Bell credit: He didn’t like Moll walking a guy and putting a runner in scoring position, so he yanked him, even with a lefty coming up to bat. Sims then got the job done. Good call. (I live in OR. It’s early here! Lol)

  55. RedlegScott

Runners on 1st and 2nd, 1 out, and CES and Friedl are down in 6 pitches. C’mon guys.

    • JB

All three pitches to Friedl were strikes whether he swings or not. Not to mention they were 99,99 and 101.

  56. LT

Had Sims walked the last batter, I would be shopping for TV tomorrow.

  57. Protime

Hopkins is overmatched and underperforming. Yet Ramos, a switch hitter is DFA, and Barrero is still in Louisville. Will see about Martini, and Siani, and now they sign Trey Mancini. What have they got up their sleeves….

    • Brian Rutherford

I wonder if Wil Myers is available? JK!

  58. Melvin

Sakak – “Hopkins has great speed.” If that’s true I sure haven’t seen in it in the outfield.

  59. JB

Hopkins with two hits and has been on 3 times tonight. Not to shabby.

  60. Melvin

Sakak – “Another left on left base hit by Benson.” Are you paying attention Mr. Bell? 🙂

  61. JB

Bell looks like genius by playing Benson against a Lefty and starting Hopkins.

  62. Melvin

Good job by Marte to put the ball in play and get the run in.

    • Melvin

Even better job by McLain!!! Two Run Homer!!!!!

    • RedlegScott

Absolutely. On an 0-2 count, followed by a dinger from McLain. Crucial at-bat.

  63. RedAlert

Young dudes coming thru again !!!!!

    • Melvin

That’s pretty much all we got is “young dudes”. 🙂

    • Daytonnati

ALL the young dudes … carry the news!

  64. JB

Reds have scored 12 runs with Votto out of the lineup today. Just saying .

    • Melvin

There was a time a month or two ago that you said Votto was driving the bandwagon to the playoffs. 🙂

      • JB

Yep I let him drive for Friedl so he could get his farewell tour in. He still driving. He has to contribute somehow. Right into the sunset.

      • Melvin

haha He’s not doing well at all at the moment. There’s no denying that. 🙂

  65. Brian Rutherford

All the young dudes, carry the news, boogaloo dudes, carry the news

      • LT

I like the game to go extra innings, I am in San Diego, have the advantage staying up., j/k.

  66. LT

9 hits and 11 hits in back to back games. Encouraging sign. 3 game sweep is sweet. Having another arm in Richardson is sweeter.

    • David

I think Richardson goes back down to AAA after today. But he did ok, I guess.

      • JB

Yeah but shall be interesting to see what Kennedy does. Richardson might be back up if he doesn’t do well. Hope he does because the more depth right now the better.

  67. RED THUNDER

Come on Cruz, do your job, throw strikes

  68. RedAlert

Throw the ball over the plate !!!!!!!! 4 run lead 8th inning – come on man !!!!!

    • David

Cruz has kind of a rubber arm. He’s not quite Pedro Borbon, but he has actually said he is more effective if he is used more.

I would imagine Diaz will finish the 9th.

      • JB

Cruz might get their best relief pitchers right now . That splitter or fork ball is nasty

  69. LarkinPhillips

Huge insurance runs. Gutsy performance by Fernando cruz!

  70. RedlegScott

Not a fan of that lead off walk, Cruz, but I’ll gladly take the rest. Nice job. Who’s going in the 9th? Dare he bring in Diaz?

  71. RED THUNDER

Diaz for the top of order in the ninth. Everyone Agrees right? Including Mr. Bell????

  72. Protime

Bingo! on JV not playing. He needs to pinch hit, and hit no higher than 7th. They are certainly capable of winning without him in the lineup. He’s no longer the player he once was, and that’s to be expected of player who has played the game clean. There is no need to diminish him by playing him every day.

    • JB

This is so true and there is no way he is going to say sit me. Bell is going to have to man up and make the decision for him.

  73. JB

This Estevez guy has no clue where his pitches are going.

  74. Melvin

If anyone is interested Barrero with three hits, two home runs, and six RBI tonight….only struckout twice. lol

    • JB

Barrero and Senzel won’t be back at GABP as Reds.

      • Melvin

Yeah I know. An argument could be made that Barrero would help this team more than Hopkins, Siani, or Martini.

  75. JB

Hopkins finally has a good game and Bell pinch hits for him. Can’t have any of that “feel good” moments. Smh

    • Melvin

hahahahaha!!!!! I was just thinking the same thing. hahahahaha!!!! 😀 Poor Hopkins.

  76. Brian Rutherford

And I read a post on here from someone who said Friedl and Fairchild are basically the same guy

    Sign Friedl to an extension

    • JB

Yep. And they think Friedl is a fourth outfielder. The diarrhea that people post is incredible

  77. Melvin

Walking the first batter with a four run lead in the ninth is not a good idea Mr. Diaz.

  78. RED THUNDER

Did someone buy a broom today?

    • RED THUNDER

I know if the angels come back its on me. Come on Diaz one more out!

  79. Melvin

Thank you for that easy out MOOSE. 🙂

    • JB

Moose Must think he has a Reds uniform on.

      • Melvin

He should. He’s getting paid by the Reds. lol Big Bob gritting his teeth about now. 😀

      • TR

I was never comfortable with the signing of Moustakas for way too much money. He was out of shape with the Reds and I thought mentally he was still with the Brewers.

  80. Tim

LAA has the craziest collection of player names.

    • TR

The Angels have had a lot of good teams over the years with, I believe, one Championship. But overall, they’ve not been the success many expected.

  81. Melvin

Diaz worrying about the runner on second and walked the batter. Come on. Concentrate.

  82. DW

One of the highlights of this game is the moose the Reds have been paying big money to play on opposing teams went 0 for 5!

  83. Bet on Red

its a sweep…. hope this causes positive momentum

  84. RedlegScott

You sure like to make things interesting, Diaz. GG, Reds!

  85. Tim

Nice bounce back series. 16 runs today isn’t too bad. Good job Pen and Lyon

  86. Protime

They better keep a close watch on Diaz, he was laboring. He’s not the same closer, he was earlier in the year. He gutted out!

    • Melvin

Yeah. Why he was paying so much attention to Ohtani at 2B with a four run lead and two outs in the 9th I don’t know. He got the job done though. 🙂

  87. Melvin

Sweepamundo!!! Cool!! Maybe we should just play all our games on the road. Just ask the other team if we can come over and play at their house. 😀

  88. Mark A Verticchio

Big series in Arizona, I would hope for at least a sweep D-backs have been hot, time to cool them off.

  89. RedsGettingBetter

Well, finally Díaz closes the door… Reds sweep LAA … I worry about the Bullpen for tomorrow at Arizona… Williamson should go long because the relievers are really burned…Maybe The Reds will call up some guys from Louisville but I think it’s difficult to be at Arizona on time…

    • Melvin

If they start driving right now….;)
