It’s a battle between rookie pitchers when the Cincinnati Reds (56-48) and the Los Angeles Dodgers (58-43) meet for a little late-night baseball on the eastern side of the country. The Reds have the slight advantage in the season series, having taken two out of three when the Dodgers visited Cincinnati in June. First pitch from Dodger Stadium is at 10:10 EDT.

The Dodgers come into the series 5-5 in their last ten games, but they currently lead the National League West by three games. While they trail only the Braves in team OPS, the Dodgers pitching is what has been a weakness this season. Their team ERA is 4.47, 9th in the NL. This is only slightly better than the Reds’ team ERA at 4.69. (However, the Dodgers may have solved some of the pitching problems by trading for Lance Lynn and Joe Kelly today).

Brandon Williamson

Brandon Williamson is coming off the best start of his very young career. Last Saturday, he allowed only one run on three hits with five strikeouts and one walk through six innings against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Williamson has struggled at times to keep his command sharp, but allowing only one walk to Arizona in six innings is a step in the right direction. He’s not a high velocity pitcher–his four seam fastball has averaged only about 92-93 mph–so it’s important for him to locate his pitches well.

Bobby Miller

The Dodgers top pitching prospect, and #15 prospect in baseball according to Baseball America, faces a Reds lineup tonight that is coming off a 18 strikeout game against the Brewers. Miller currently has a 23 K% for the season, and has only struck out fewer than three batters in a game once out of ten appearances this season. He is a high velocity pitcher who relies primarily on his sinker and slider, and he averages about 99 mph for his fastball and 90 mph for his slider.

Bullpen Help Coming:

Two relievers – Vladimir Gutierrez and Casey Legumina – were sent to the Arizona complex today for rehab stints.

Another Reds reliever had season-ending surgery earlier this month:

I’m too tired to do that tonight

    • RedsMonk65

Minds their lose to about are people.

      l think I already have…. 😉

  1. west larry

David Bell signed to a three-year extension..

    • Melvin

Krall has to answer for it now good or bad.

  2. Jedi Joey

3 year extension??? Wow! Why not just another year? I mean, were they afraid someone would steal him away?

    • Dennis Westrick

I’m sure suitors from all of the other MLB teams are lined up all the way around GABP to sign the effervescent, brilliant tactician that Bell is!

  3. Pete

Does Nick Krall know about this? Is this a Bob & Phil move exclusively?

  4. MIredfan

Ok, so you say the Dodgers team ERA is 4.47. Lynn’s ERA is 6.47 and Kelly’s 4.97, and neither is necessarily trending in the right direction over the last month. So, um……what?

  5. Mark A Verticchio

8 games over .500 is not that great that it deserves an extension, they could have, at least, waited to see how the season plays out, remember the total collapse of 2021. I think Krall has done a lot of good things but he may have hurt his reputation with this move. We will see.

  6. RedsFanInFL

Makes sense. 2021 in the miDale of an August / September collapse when the Reds played their way out of a wildcard spot he got a 2 year extension. Now watching the Reds just finish the season 3-10 bs the Brewers and fall out of 1st place, why not give Bell a 3 year extension

    • Melvin

haha Yeah. They DO announce extensions at the weirdest times don’t they. haha

  7. J

This organization… I was *almost* convinced they’d started prioritizing winning above friendships and loyalties, but apparently not.

I was pretty sure he’d be back next year, but assumed they’d be taking it year by year.

Three more years of Benson hitting 9th and India 5th for no apparent reason.

    • Melvin

Well. At least Doug’s site will have lots of conversations/posts for three more years. lol

      • Doug Gray

I got bills to pay, so I guess that’s a good thing? Lol

      • Melvin

You’re not in cahoots with Krall are you? lol

      • Dennis Westrick

It’s called collusion, Doug! Just kidding!

    • Frankie Tomatoes

Isn’t the team winning right now?

David Bell could save 14 cats from a burning building and I swear that some of you would be mad at the order in which he saved them.

      • Melvin

Not me. I don’t like cats. lol …..Just kidding. 🙂

      • Jedi Joey

@Frankie, can you honestly tell us you think this is a great decision? The season isn’t over. A collapse could happen and they are stuck with this guy for 3 more years. No one would hire him away. A one year extension to prove he can consistently win would have been way smarter. Then again, we are talking about one of the worst ran teams in MLB so it probably does make sense after all.

      • J

Bell could burn down 14 houses full of cats and then save 14 cats from a burning building, and I swear some people would get mad whenever anyone suggests he’s not been very good for cats. “Haven’t you noticed all the cats he saved this year? Give the guy a break. All the cats he killed were probably going to die soon anyway.”

      • Redgoggles

If he saved 14 cats, I’d count that against him.

    • Dennis Westrick

Don’t forget about the use of 4+ relief pitchers per game and that NO RP may pitch more than one inning!

  8. Jason Franklin

I honestly am pretty sure it doesn’t matter what we think. 🙂 The players like the man, the maturity/boring approach he seems to handle them with. He doesn’t yell and all that but that seems to work with the younger teams (nowadays). We all wish he could handle the lineup better, show more emotion and all that, but Krall has something out of the way (for the FO). So, what’s next? Trade for some players? I just hope that this didn’t get done because they had the spare time to work on an extension instead of wheeling and dealing a bit.

  9. Indy Red Man

Hitters hit and pitchers pitch. I’m pretty sure Bob Melvin is better then Bell but we beat SD last time. They have a huge payroll and they’re under .500. I choose to focus on the hitters and pitchers. Let’s get a win tonight!

  10. Mark Moore

In a hotel watching the Bravos try to beat Bernie

    • LT

As it stands right now, the good guys are winning 🙂

  11. Dennis Westrick

I hate to say I told you so, but, I told you so! No, not Bell’s insane 3-year contract extension! Don’t look NOW, but the Stupid Cubs have finally reached the 500 mark at 51-51 and are NOW only 4 games behind our Reds in the NL Wild Card race and only 3 games back in the loss column!

What does that mean? It means the Reds cannot afford to stumble against the Dodgers in this 3-game weekend series prior to heading to Chicago for 4 games to finish this brutal (and vital) 10-game road trip!

I bet Ian Happ can’t wait to face the Reds and fatten his offense statistics!

    • Indy Red Man

Cards interim manager wouldn’t take Montgomery out in the 6th after he was obviously tiring. Cubs up 3-2

      • Dennis Westrick

Actually, it may be better the Stupid Cubs come off a winning steak when the series starts on Monday! Always nervous about playing a team in the midst of a losing streak!

    • VaRedsFan

You said the same thing about the Cardinals 3 weeks ago.

  12. Dennis Westrick

I hate these West Coast games! This old boy needs his beauty sleep! Will probably Clete early and hopefully be pleasantly surprised in the morning!

  13. Soto

I’m no Bell fan. He just isn’t my type of manager. I’m old school. I prefer managers like Sparky or Sweet Lou that aren’t afraid to ruffle some feathers and speak truth to the media on occasion, but this team likes Bell and he is very connected in the inner circles of the Reds and baseball in general… so there you go. I will say this. I hope he becomes the most successful manager in Reds history. Good luck Mr. Bell and congrats on the contract. Has anyone seen the numbers?

  14. Indy Red Man

This Miller kid for LA has been smacked around in his last 3 home starts. It would be nice if the bats got going and they got the first one. Milwaukee is losing big and Arizona is down 4 early. Let’s go!!

  15. Dennis Westrick

Dodger’s batting order is intimidating! Especially the top 4 with perennial Reds Killer and former Brave, Freddie Freeman!

  16. Indy Red Man

Leadoff triple for Elly. Certain RLN writing him off as a failure at leadoff after 10 days or whatever it’s been

    • Melvin

Not too many guys in the history of baseball get a triple on that hit.

  17. Dennis Westrick

Atlanta up 10-4 over the Bernies in the 7th! Guess the Braves are not intimidated by the Brewers!

  18. Bet on Red

how about this start against the dodgers… we are a single away from a team cycle

    • Bet on Red

and just as I posted that India gets the team cycle

  19. Indy Red Man

OV!! Other half of RLN wants him dealt for anyone to be named later

    • Old-school

Literally no one on RLN commented on fraley HR x you and me. they are conditioned to be loyal to the narrative over winning. i mean….fraley hit a 2 run homer to give the Reds the lead in Dodger stadium…but lets ignore that. fraley is the reds best lefty hitter and leads the team in homers and RBI and 3rd in OPS. Dems the facts folks even if you dont like ‘em

  20. RedsMonk65

Where we these Reds’ hitters vs. the Brewers?

  21. old-school

Oh no…Fraley 2 run bomb in dodgers stadium in a critical game…that doesnt advance the RLN narrative that fraley is not needed or easily replaceable agaisnt righties that throw 101.

  22. Indy Red Man

This is Hunter Greene West. Throwing hundo but not clipping corners. Reds always like velocity for some reason. I remember our s teams used to rock Gerrit Cole back in the day

  23. Soto

Williamson needs a good start. Not easy against this lineup.

  24. Soto

Freeman reminds me a lot of Votto in his prime. He just doesn’t give up at bats and rarely gets himself out. Heck of a hitter.

    • Indy Red Man

Except if they swap home stadiums Votto would be Adrian Gonzalez and Freddy would be Ken Griffey Jr

      • Soto

I hope you were shooting for hyperbole. In his prime there was only one JR. Freeman is a great player but he will never be in the Mantle, Griffey, Mayes league.

      • Indy Red Man

I was being a little bit silly, but Freddy Boom Boom would’ve hit 40-50 hrs every year if he was a Red. No cheapies in ATL or LA

  25. Brian Rutherford

Good start for the good guys. Lets hope the rook can calm his nerves pitching in Dodger stadium to this lineup. Going to be quite a test for the young man. Breath deep and remember you put your uniform on the same way they do my man.

    Go Redlegs.

  26. Soto

Not a horrible start for Williamson. I like the movement on his pitches, especially his cutter.

  27. Tom Reeves

Great move to extend Bell. This team plays hard for him and plays together! That’s his biggest job and he does it exceptionally well.

His best bat in the lineup bats 9th and he’s as big of a team player as anyone in the game – not a peep of negativity.

    • Brian Rutherford

These guys deserve to make the post season. It hinges on how fast they can adjust to how they are being pitched. Steep learning curve but I have faith they can do it.

David Bell has the perfect personality for this kind of team. Let’s hope it works out for everyone.

  28. RedsgettingBetter

    Elly 3-curve strikeout swinging

  29. Soto

I would love to see Hunter Greene try to develop an 80 mph over hand curve like Miller just threw. It would be devastating.

    • LarkinPhillips

That may be easier than the change for him to learn. A 12-6 curve is fairly simple the throw from a high arm slot like HG has.

      • Soto

I agreed. Back in the day that was a very common combination of pitches. Dwight Gooden was a sensation with that combination.

  30. Melvin

Way to hang with it and get the out. 🙂

  31. RedsgettingBetter

Williamson has been lucky so far…

  32. LT

“We don’t play the Brewers everyday” and the Brewers don’t play us every day. Atl got 10 runs on them, probably same number of runs Reds able to score in the last 3 series against them. Just baseball.

  33. Melvin

McLain is the best all around hitter on the team. There’s no doubt about it in my mind.

    • Soto

Looks pretty obvious to me. He gets my vote as their MVP and best all-around position player.

  34. GMan88

Very impressive to me that the Braves can hang 10 runs on the Brewers.

    • Soto

The Braves look like the best team in baseball. I don’t think it’s even that close.

    • Brian Rutherford

The Braves may end up with a historic season if they keep this pace up. They have no weak spots.

  35. Soto

I bet that last fly ball from India would have been gone in Great American Small Park.

  36. Indy Red Man

Cubs ..oh my goodness. CF caught one over the fence 2 out bottom 9. Win 3-2 instead of lose 4-3. LA about to beat Williamson down now

      • Indy Red Man

That was big. Maybe he can quit walking them now. They can be pitched to

      • JB

Walking Betts with Freddie after him is not a good plan.

  37. LT

How about that? Got in and out of trouble. Good job Williamson.

  38. Brian Rutherford

Way to throw a great pitch when you need it Williamson! Hang with em’

  39. Soto

I’d like to see him hang one of those curves to Steer.

  40. Indy Red Man

How does this kid get hit? Throws harder then HG with great curve and 2 more pitches….and in a pitchers park pitchers division

    • Soto

A lot of the 100 mph guys have zero movement on their fastball. He seems to get in trouble when he misses his spots with his fastball. Just like Greene. Modern hitters are conditioned to hit 100 mph. His curve ball is really good though. It looks like he is going to be a good one.

  41. LT

As an experienced, wanted to be a HOF hitter but actually not, Votto got fooled on curveball just like the rookies.

  42. Indy Red Man

Crazy we had Stephenson DHing half the year like he’s Mike Piazza.

  43. LarkinPhillips

Williamson has been playing with firewall night. Lots of hard hit outs. Wonder how long the magic can last?

    • Soto

I prefer to look at like he is learning to compete at the major league level against quality major league hitters. I see development in young Mr. Williamson.

      • LarkinPhillips

No disagreement there. He has improved every time out. Just hope he can keep dodging dipping ducking diving and dodging.

    • Brian Rutherford

That kid was pitching in Chattanooga or Louisville at this time last season and now he’s trying to get Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman out at Dodger stadium in a pennant race too.

What a difference a year makes.

    • MK

Firewall is there to stop the fire so if he is pitching with i, guess I hope it continues.

  44. VaRedsFan

Why did Votto fall down on a slow roller??
Because that’s how he’s always done it.

    • Ted Alfred

Not sure how that wasn’t an error…terrible defense by Votto

    • old-school

Votto is a terrible defensive first baseman and a terrible baserunner. Both are undeniable facts.

Good luck with that. David bell just got 3 more years

    • MK

Because he is and always has been below average defensively. He won a gold glove when popularity and positive offensive skills were part of the equation. After he got the award his fans thought he was the next coming of Keith Hernandez. He is not.

  45. Indy Red Man

Love RLN and everything you do Doug
CES could play blindfolded and he’d be better at 1B then Votto. That 75;mph chopper played him

    • JB

I would have been more amazed if he caught it. You could see it all the way that he was going to Ole’ it.

    • old-school

      No doubt Indy.

David Bell just got promised 3 more years to sign up for that.

  46. Beaufort Red

But Votto’s a historically slow starter. Even on defense.

    • MK

It is July 29. When does a slow start end September 15?

I think one thing that makes Votto worse defensively is Brandon Phillips. Datdude played with such pizzazz that Joe tried to do the same and he was not coordinated enough to be that cool. Brandon also could backup Joe to coverup some of the problems.

  47. Indy Red Man

Not an error because he go get the ball, but he should’ve atleast smothered it. Basically anyone could’ve atleast stopped the ball

  48. JB

Haven’t seen any stats, but who is faster Elly or Hamilton?

  49. Beaufort Red

Did Sadak just say EDLC needs to swing more at pitches in the zone and lay off more pitches out of the zone?

  50. Old-school

Watching another game where bad hitting is bad.

How bout the Reds get better hitters?

  51. RedsgettingBetter

Miller realized pitching a lot of curves can do damage to the Reds lineup…
Friedl doesn’t get on base …

  52. Indy Red Man

Joey had a plan. If he holds him to infield single then Mookie makes it 4-3

    • Indy Red Man

Joey’s experience and baseball IQ saved us 2 runs

  53. Brian Rutherford

Great pitch to Freeman right there. Nice DP.

  54. Indy Red Man

Benson and Freidl need to be swapped. Confident Bell will figure it out. In December

    • JB

I’m a Friedl fan and I agree with that. I think Friedl will do more damage in the 9 hole and same with Benson.

  55. LT

I tell you, the cutter got Williamson through 5 innings. He mixed in just enough curve and 4 seamer. 4 seamer got hit around a bit though. He has another inning in him I hope.

  56. Indy Red Man

Love Matty but he doesn’t walk much for a 5’8 dude. Has to realize he’s got a compact zone and I think he will

  57. JB

I hate bringing in Sims with a runner on.

    • LarkinPhillips

Me too. He walks the 1st batter nearly every time. Don’t understand this move at all.

      • LarkinPhillips

Only for now. We still have three innings to cover, and I assume Sims will warm up again to pitch the 7th.

      • VaRedsFan

He will get two quick outs, and Bell will put Young in if the next guy is a lefty.

  58. LarkinPhillips

Setting the Over under on relievers used by Reds tonight at 5. What do you got?

  59. LT

Not sure why he didn’t go with cutter to get Muncy. I would let him pitch to Taylor but Bell just got a 3 year extension so he’s doing whatever he wishes

  60. Indy Red Man

Great performance from Williamson. He’s really grown for a rookie! Hopefully we can hold on and get him a big W

  61. JB

Sadak- Almonte hasn’t given up a run in 15 innings.
Steer- Thanks for jinxing him buddy.

  62. Brian Rutherford

That is a huge run! WTG Spencer Steer!

  63. Soto

Steer sure does like to sit on a breaking ball!

    • Beaufort Red

Anybody batting behind Votto is a joke.

  64. Indy Red Man

Benson only Red that walks anymore

  65. Soto

I think Krall’s number one job in the off-season is locking up McClain, Steer, and Abbott to extensions. I’ve seen enough. I’m convinced those three are keepers. I think CES will join them soon in that category, but time will tell.

  66. VaRedsFan

perfect time for a squeeze with TJ

  67. LT

Friedl got 2 RBIs without having a hit. Baseball.

  68. JB

Two games in a row that Friedl got hit on the foot.

  69. LT

Couldn’t get anything off of Brewers bullpen. Got 3 runs off of LÀ. I’ll ?n already. Is LÀ throwing in the towel by staying with this reliever?

  70. Indy Red Man

I’m not feeling all warm & fuzzy yet. Not with 9 outs to go. 2 more please

  71. Indy Red Man

I would’ve sent Elly on 0-2. Knew they were throwing a waste pitch

  72. LarkinPhillips

3 big runs. Would have felt better with two more, but tough luck for Fraley. This game is far from over with our pen.

  73. LT

Maybe this is why Bell does not send his receiver back out ? Does Bell know something about his relievers that we don’t?

  74. LT

Need to get Gault up and ready to escape jam.

  75. Indy Red Man

Ok so now Sims gives them right back. We can’t do this with Sims as our setup man. He’s been good overall, but he’s not great.

    • JB

Guy just doesn’t know what a clean inning is.

  76. LT

He just gave up and threw a high fastball for ball 4. Bases loaded with Freeman up. My gosh Sims.

  77. Melvin

All we need is a bases loaded grand slam here. smh

  78. Chris

Can’t the Reds just have a quiet 7th/8th/9th inning for a change?

  79. LarkinPhillips

The move to pull Williamson after 76 pitches and bring in Sims isn’t looking as good now. We need Gibaut to bail us out, against Freeman. Ugh!

    • LarkinPhillips

Young gave up a GS to freeman last time we played them.

  80. Melvin

Better be prepared to score more runs…several.

  81. JB

Needed more runs when they had the chance.

    • Ted Alfred

Just bad luck on the Fraley out…he smoked it which is at least two more runs and maybe more that inning. Meanwhile Freeman hits a soft liner that gets two runs in… bad luck. Sims is always a scary proposition because his control is so erratic…he doesn’t know where the ball’s going most of the time, so he can strike out a lot of guys out and his ball moves a ton, but he’s also very likely to do what he did tonight. If Antone can come back anywhere near where he was 2 years ago it goes an awful long way to solving the bullpen problems, because he becomes the set up guy. 2 years ago his stuff was by far the best on the staff and he had really good control.

  82. RedsgettingBetter

Incredible… 6-2 so LAD loaded the bases with Freeman at Bat against Gibaut

  83. Melvin

I’d almost rather he walk Freeman here…. Too late.

  84. LT

Do not throw high fastballs to LÀ hitters, unless you want to get your brain beat out of you.

  85. VaRedsFan

Better stop throwing fastballs to JD

  86. Slicc50

We need a better bullpen to beat the big boys like the Dodgers. They really work the pitchers!

  87. VaRedsFan

Don’t know what happened to MMC there??
The ball curved away from him?

  88. Jason Franklin

Do we still not want to trade anyone in the farm for some relievers or a starter? The bullpen is dying.

  89. LT

That was a beauty by Sims and Gibaut. Sims got 3 on and Gibaut got 3 circle the bases

  90. Redgoggles

Here is an example of why it isn’t a slam dunk to send back a reliever who has only thrown a few pitches…..especially after a long inning on offense.

Surprise move by Bell. Must have read the comments on this site.

    • Jason Franklin

Haha. Yes, you are probably right on the reading the comments.

    • VaRedsFan

Just because it didn’t work tonight doesn’t mean it’s the wrong move

      • Redgoggles

Hard to argue that it wasn’t tonight.

  91. Melvin

Poopy woopy poopy. Hanging on by a thread now.

  92. Jason Franklin

okay.. votto against a left.. i am done.

  93. Mark A Verticchio

Speaking of slam dunks this game is proof that Krall needs to find bull pen help asap.

  94. LarkinPhillips

Why are we not hitting fir Votto? What better time use CES?

  95. Slicc50

Wish our hitters would take a lesson from watching the Dodger hitters….take some pitches!

  96. LT

Did you see that? 3 straight fastball, almost same speed and same location, to strike Steer out.

  97. JB

Wish the Reds would trade for Suter. They need another lefty.

  98. Indy Red Man

Matty took 1 step up the middle for some reason as contact was made. Bad break, but Sims walked 2 guys. Feels unlikely we hold on now

    • JB

That ball curved back after it hit the mound.

      • Indy Red Man

Had to go back and look. Liner went over the mound to the right

  99. Jason Franklin

Do you ever get a really, really bad feeling about the outcome of a game? Letting Votto bat is just a big mistake by Bell. Plus the lineup needs some major restructuring. I can’t finish this tonight. Good luck everyone. Don’t forget your heart meds.

  100. Indy Red Man

We needed Dave Robertson or Graveman. Can’t believe Krall is going to do nothing and let this season go down the drain. They’re overworked.

    • Jason Franklin

Hey but he thanked us for going to the games to give the owners extra cash. Dangit, now I am gone 🙂

  101. JB

The way Diaz has pitched lately I don’t even trust him.

  102. RedsMonk65

Have to check out. Hope the Reds don’t blow this.

  103. Melvin

No error on that but it really was an error. Had plenty of time with his arm.

    • JB

Mac couldn’t get it out his glove either. What the heck is going on out there?

  104. Beaufort Red

I’m pretty sure Marte will play 3rd, moving McClain to 2nd . That’s too bad because I think he’s our best shortstop.

  105. Ozzie

Elly, Elly, Elly, we needed that DP.

  106. Ted Alfred

Geez Elly. The more I watch Elly play SS and 3rd it just seems he’s better at 3rd. He’s had some problems with pretty simple plays at SS where at 3rd base he’s been basically flawless and made a bunch of really great plays. I think his athleticism at 3rd plays so well too because it’s more a position of instinct and length and his arm all of those things.

  107. Melvin

Woo Hoo! Snuck out of that one! 🙂

  108. LT

Diaz slider looks ok tonight. Can he keep it in the 9th? No fastball

  109. Beaufort Red

EDLC is an average hitter with unbelievable god given talent.

  110. Melvin

I need De La Cruz farther down in the order until he gets on base more.

  111. Indy Red Man

Freidl is a mess right now. Too many flyballs. Doesn’t go the other way at all and doesn’t walk

  112. Beaufort Red

EDLC is an average hitter at best with unbelievable Gid given talents.

    • Brian Rutherford

He is a 21 year old rookie who was playing in AA last year. Give him a break maybe? I wonder if he has ever seen Dodger stadium?

    • Daytonnati

And you would replace him with …???

  113. LT

Got it. Sweat this one out. 1 pitch each to get Smith and Martinez. We take it.

  114. Indy Red Man

Wow. Finally an easy inning. Big win!
Milw, SF, and Arizona all lost

  115. Brian Rutherford

Ball Game! Nice job fellas. Way to hold on! Diaz did a nice job there.

  116. Melvin

Woo Hoo! We did it! Only a half game back. 🙂

  117. Soto

Big win! Great job by Diaz. Good start by Williamson! So nice to take the opener. Now win the series.

  118. Brian Rutherford

Way to hold up the fort night crew. Until tomorrow.

  119. RedsgettingBetter

Reds win! … Díaz has a great 4-out saved tonight… Young held LAD after the crap disaster of Sims-Gibaut…
The offense scored 6 runs tonight…

  120. RedsColoredSpecs

Nice effort to hold on tonight. Glad to be rewarded for staying up to watch!

  121. DavidKL

Nearing trade deadline.. why are we still using Weaver? He’s horrid. DFA him. Give Connor Phillips or Lyon Richardson a start.
