Brandon Williamson

It’s been a good month for Brandon Williamson. While the rain got in his way when he was in Washington and limited him to just three innings pitched, he’s allowed just four runs in 14.0 innings over his three starts this month and he’s given up just eight hits in that span.

The splits for Williamson are pretty big. Left-handed hitters don’t get many opportunities to face him, but when they do the results haven’t gone their way. They are hitting .250, but they have just one extra-base hit – a double – in 45 plate appearances. Right-handed hitters are going a lot of work, though. They don’t hit for much average, but they walk at a solid rate and they hit for a lot of power against him.

Brandon Pfaadt

It’s been an up-and-down season for Brandon Pfaadt. He’s made 12 starts in Triple-A Reno and count success, posting a 3.71 ERA. But he’s also made six starts in the big leagues and he’s struggled in a big way, posting a 9.82 ERA and he’s allowed nine home runs in just 25.2 innings pitched.

While he’s been limited in his big league time this year to just six starts, both lefties and righties have crushed the ball against him. Righties are hitting .320 and slugging .720 – though they don’t walk much, they are making plenty of contact against him. Lefties are doing even better. They are hitting .367, walking more frequently, and they are also hitting for tons of power against him.

Elly De La Cruz among the most valuable in trade

Fangraphs wrapped up their Top 50 Trade Value series today. Elly De La Cruz came in as the player with the 6th most trade value in all of Major League Baseball. Of course, that’s not to say he’s the 6th best player in baseball (yet), but that the combination of his age, upside, and contract make him more valuable than all but five players in the game on the trade market. Matt McLain isn’t that far behind him, coming in at #28 on the list. Hunter Greene and Spencer Steer were also in the Top 50.

The Reds have spent big on the draft

Yesterday saw Cincinnati sign two more draft picks and they went well over slot value for both players. In fact, they spent so much that if they had spent another $460 then they would have had to forfeit next year’s 1st round pick. While there are plenty of places where it seems the club has been cheap over the last few years, the draft isn’t one of them. They pushed their spending to the allowable limits before facing the biggest penalty. You can check out all of their signings and bonuses at the Cincinnati Reds Draft Tracker.

    OK, here we go.

    Nice lead-off single from Steer.

Anybody else see/hear the clip from him in the pre-game? What a great young player and fantastic attitude. I’m thinking a modern Charlie Hustle without the baggage.

    And now we’re in business!!

    • Harry Stoner

Maybe a similar curious barbershop, if not style.

I think Steer is great. Hate to weigh him down with comparisons to that lug.

      Sabo a good comp.

      He’s the first Steer.

      • Mark Moore

        +5,000

Spuds is a great comp. I’ll use that going forward.

      • Mark Moore

Sabo once said something like, “If I’m not playing baseball, I’m flipping hotdogs.” Trying to say he wasn’t all that smart/talented about anything else.

  2. Steve Schoenbaechler

Elly not leading off? Probably just a day rest. Surely Bell didn’t learn something else?

    • Mark Moore

Day off. Planned or not, I think we all agree it was needed to help clear his head.

      • Melvin

It’s his turn in the rotation I guess. Probably a good time for it.

  3. Melvin

Good start. Two on. No outs. Scratch that. Three. 🙂

  4. Mark Moore

Pfaadt might as well put up an “Open House – Free Cookies” sign at this rate and invite everybody into his noggin.

  5. Mark Moore

I’m thinking Fraley was after a blast rather than a contact fly ball.

    Up to India.

  6. Mark Moore

Don’t make me type it … DON’T MAKE ME TYPE IT!!!

Bases loaded and bupkis to show for it … CANNOT do that, guys. Just cannot.

      • Mark Moore

Thanks, VaRedsFan. It was the “loaded, no outs, no runs” I was thinking of, but it deserves a major stink, fish, pot!!!

        +1,000 to you

  7. LT

Let the snakes escape. They will come back to bite us. Let’s hope not 🙂

  8. Melvin

Man. Bases loaded no one out and no score. Not good. This an example in my view of why CES needs to be hitting fourth. He’s not just a slugger. He’s a hitter also.

    • Steve Schoenbaechler

Nothing to say that CES would have worked there. Fraley is our main RBI guy. India still working out of a slump.

      • Jim Walker

What % of the guys Fraley could have driven in has he actually driven in? That’s the comp metric to look for. And no, I do not have it at my fingertips for any of the 4 guys being mentioned.

      • Ted Alfred

And no way to say that it wouldn’t have resulted in a huge hit if CES was hitting 5th instead of India….and we’ll never know… but lineups do matter.

    • Jim Walker

Sitting here thinking the same. How does CES not get to the plate in that inning. 1K in 17 PAs and he bats behind 3 K risks and 2 GIDP bait guys.

  9. Tomn

Bases loaded, no ine out and we come up pfladt.

    • Ryan

But Joey keeps saying “I’m almost there…”

      • Friedl Green Tomatoes

Unless he’s got a time machine, he’s not, and he never will be. He’ll run into a home run once or twice every week or two, but in between he’s a useless strikeout machine. That’s his ego talking.

      • Melvin

At least he made contact. If Fraley would have done that we’d have a run.

  10. old-school

Pfaadt huge K numbers in AAA and throws change up and off speed for strikes. Fraley/India and Votto flummoxed on the off speed.

    • Mark Moore

Point taken. But the Rays took him for 6 runs in 2 innings for his last start. Need to get that back in his melon and mess him up.

Then again, we’re not the Rays and never will be. I never use that comp as I don’t think our FO has a clue how they operate.

  11. SR

Words fail me on that effort from our 4,5and six hitters against a guy with an ERA like his.

  12. Indy Red Man

Pathetic at-bat by India in particular. Hacks at a bad 2-1 pitch for no reason and then gets confused by 2-2 down the middle. He just panics with men on base? Put the pressure on the scrub with a 9.50 era and bases loaded behind 2-1

    • Steve Schoenbaechler

Justification to put his leadoff, put him lower in the order, or DFA/trade him, where other teams will utilize him better.

      • Harry Stoner

        DFA India?

What are you drinking this afternoon?

    • Ted Alfred

I don’t want India anywhere near an RBI position in the batting order because he just almost never comes through. He either hits into a double play that crushes the inning or strikes out.

  13. Brian Byrer

I’ve been fine with Benson hitting ninth but innings like that make me reconsider.

  14. Mark Moore

Stats said 2.8 runs average with bases loaded and nobody out. But we’re not playing stats baseball, are we … 😮

Nice quick, clean inning. So that’s a plus.

    • LT

The Reds defy logic, stats, everything. No team has a lead off hitter striking out 2-3 times a game and a 9th batter with highest OPS on the team. We’re intending to rewrite baseball.

  15. magi210

Williamson very pitch efficient so far, love to see it.

  16. LT

Williamson looks to be better today than his last outing. He’s throwing the 4 seamer both at the top and bottom of the zone, mixing in the change up and cutter. So far so good.

  17. Tom Mitsoff

Williamson only 17 pitches through 2 innings!

    • Rick

If he keeps getting it done & Phillips makes it up, we’ll have our starters for 24.

  18. Old-school

Been to 3 games in the last month and all absolutely packed to the gills. another home near sell out today. Reds fans are showing up to watch good baseball. Would be interesting to see the financial upside since Memorial Day at GABP compared to budget.

    • Mark Moore

Would definitely like to see that number. It compounds in most cases since fans buy stuff at the ballpark.

  19. Rick

Maybe the bottom of the order gets on for Steer.

  20. Mark Moore

Anybody else notice the fly balls from both CES and TySteve would have scored us a run? Anyone … Bueller …

  21. Beaufort Red

Votto keeps saying he’s almost there. I’m thinking he is already there and it ain’t pretty. And those that say he’s a slow starter, when’s he gonna get hot, September?

    • LT

After the season over, seriously. He will have a few hot spurts here and there and it’s a beauty when that happens. But the rest of the time he’s what we’re seeing now.

    • old-school

I think the issue with Votto is most folks look at him as all or none and he most assuredly is not that. There’s some complexity there. Against righties hitting in the 6 hole with high on base fast guys ahead of him…I think he can still help this team as a power lefty bat.

He hasn’t hit lefties since 2018 and he’s one of the slowest players in the game and not good defensively. It would seem platoon DH with occasional 1b sharing with CES or Steer and power lefty bat off the bench would seem to work. But, Votto cant be broken down into 39 yo skill sets. Its all or none from the fans and all or none with vet legacy from DB.

    • Hanawi

We know your opinion on Votto and EDLC. You don’t have to repeat them ad nauseam

  22. Old-school

John Smiley looking good thru 3.

      • old-school

Nice reference to Pete Schourek( sp?). these tall lefties with off speed are a tough change of pace.

      • Rick

Thanks. I think that your (spl) is correct on Pete.

  23. Mark Moore

Completely on a whim, I just checked airfare to Cincy for Labor Day weekend. Sadly, unless a winning lotto ticket magically appears in my possession, that won’t happen.

I’d really love to make the trip while the boys are playing hot. The DC trip wetted my appetite for live baseball.

    • VaRedsFan

Do you have Breeze Airways in your area?
Cheap and good and they go to Cincy.

    • Dennis Westrick

And, we are wasting a pretty good performance by Williamson!

    • Dennis Westrick

Like I said the other day! I am driving from Central Florida up to my twin sister’s house near Louisville the week of Labor Day! Will attend at least one Reds and one Bats game that week!

  24. Steve Schoenbaechler

Excellent pitch count by BW so far, as I knock on the coffee table.

    • R

Hope that he gets thru the order 2nd & 3rd time today.

  25. Mark Moore

Kind of looks like Pfaadt has cleared his melon after we let him off the hook in the 1st.

  26. LT

Look like AZ pitcher has settled in. Pitching duo 🙂

  27. Mark Moore

OK, that guy without a shirt had to have lost a drunken bet … no other explanation for a guy that age to do that.

  28. Mark Moore

21 sac bunts this season for the Snakes. Leads MLB.

  29. Amarillo

If a guy with a .900 OPS wishes to give us a free out, you just say thank you.

  30. Melvin

Good play by CES there. He’s got a pretty good arm. I think his defense is underrated.

  31. Old-school

Other than Weaver, who exactly needs to be replaced in the reds SP rotation?

  32. Jim Walker

Especially for a minor leaguer 😉

    • Jim Walker

This was meant for Melvin’s comment about CES’s defense a couple of threads up.

Guess I am a minor leaguer at comment posting today. (at least).

      • old-school

He’s my first baseman Jim ….now. I will give Votto some spot starts against righties at 1b as he has earned that….but CES is my first baseman/DH and 5 hole hitter. Move on.

      • Melvin

You’re taking posting away from someone else. 😉

  33. Mark Moore

Good to see Williamson work out of that jam. It wasn’t pretty, but it got the job done. His earlier efficient innings should mean that inning doesn’t stress him too much.

Crooked numbers now, please. Lots of them.

  34. Harry Stoner

Williamson looking much more confident in his stuff of late.

  35. gusnwally

No one actually, that is why I would hate to trade away top prospects for a middle of the road pitcher.

  36. LT

Williamson needs to trust his stuff more, throws a few more strikes and he will be able to go deep in game

  37. Mark Moore

Perhaps India is still pressing just a tiny bit? Maybe?

  38. Harry Stoner

India falls right for it, time and again.

You could see Pfffft setting him up for it and wham….down and away K.

  39. Jason Franklin

When will Elly get in the game? Reds need something to spark them. pfaadt is not this good.

    • Mark Moore

If he’s throwing that offspeed garbage, the current version of EDLC will look a lot like India, just from the other side of the plate.

      • Jason Franklin

Pinch run then. Something. I’ve wondered if Elly is any good at bunting?

  40. Mark Moore

The Ghost of Evan Longoria breaks up the potential No-No.

  41. Mark Moore

Focus on the batter. Longoria isn’t going anywhere.

  42. Jim Walker

TJ Fried’s OPS from the last 28/14/7 days is .623/.384/.280. How much slack does he have left? Asking for Jose and Stu in Louisville and Nick in Cincinnati.

    • Hanawi

He seems like one that was playing over his head for awhile and is coming back down to probably what he is long-term. Still think the Reds need at least one if not two everyday options in the outfield during the offseason.

      • Jim Walker

Stu in Louisville had a 15 point better MLB OPS+ (117/102) than TJ in 2022 on just under half as many PAs (115/258) but TJ was more or less just handed the CF job early on in ST. Think it is evidence of the Reds handedness platoon bias when a LH and RH hitter are both available for a spot.

      • Jim Walker

Ah yes!!! My reverse jinx strategy just paid off in spades!!!!

    • Rick

I wish that Stu was up & Curt released. Makes no sense in my book.
How is Marte progressing looking towards 24?

      • Melvin

Marte looking good and getting better.

  43. Mark Moore

Very dry day at GABP. Ball isn’t going to carry much.

    • VaRedsFan

Do you have Breeze Airways in your area?
Cheap and good and they go to Cincy.

      • Mark Moore

$250 to Columbus for their better seating. Includes checking the bag.

        Not bad, actually.

      • VaRedsFan

        Yes…that’s what I used “Nicer”
        Free checked bag.

  44. Jim Walker

Williamson ducks another punch. Starting to see a lot to like in him.

  45. Beaufort Red

If Williamson keeps it up maybe
    Lodolo, Abbot, Williamson
    Koufax, Osteen , Podres
I guy can dream can’t he!!!!

  46. Dennis Westrick

Tuned in late! Just catching up! Saw the Reds had bases loaded with NO outs in the 1st! Result? No runs! Simply not acceptable for a ML team in a pennant race! Strikeouts with RISP have been killing this team all season!

    • Mark Moore

Pennant race??? I thought we were in a PEANUT race … silly me 😛

  47. Melvin

It’s puzzling how Benson can see pitches so well but can’t see fly balls very well.

  48. Hanawi

15 straight retired now for the Reds. Just have zero idea what to do with this guy.

  49. Melvin

There’s a good catch by Benson. Much better coming in on balls.

  50. old-school

Benson great catch. Maybe just play him deep and let him run in?

    • JB

Yeah I think somebody said that yesterday. Larkinphillips I think. Maybe it will help his horrible reads on the ball

      • Jim Walker

Yeah, typically has no problem coming in on balls. He just can’t run good routes or keep track of high fly balls where he has to go back even a little.

    • Mark Moore

He’s better in LF from where I’m sitting (in my comfortable chair in my AC)

      • Jim Walker

From my comfortable perch, he has been consistently struggling on routes moving into the left center gap.

Just this week he has had at least 3 that he ran really poor routes on. They were not gimme catches even with good routes; but, he wasn’t even close to having a play on any of them. All fell untouched near or on the track in the general vicinity of the Reds pen.

A fourth ball in the same area he appeared to be settled under in front of the track then started that uneven almost stagger like uncertain fade he does back onto the track and fortunately gloved it.

This is the only real blemish I see in his game right now. Hopefully, in the off season they will hook him up with someone to work on it.

  51. Rick

I hope that our 1st inning doesn’t bite us. Looming larger the deeper we go.

  52. JB

I wish for once India would keep the tag on the runner. He never does it.

    • VaRedsFan

Agree. Never know what the ump or replay will see.

  53. old-school

    Williamson stellar today folks.

6 innings 1 run and looking like a legit change of pace big tall lefty with an assortment of pitches.

    • Dennis Westrick

Hated, absolutely hated, batting against lefties when I played HS baseball! Everything they throw is backwards!

  54. Mark Moore

Playing come from behind, so that’s a plus, amiright?

  55. Dennis Westrick

6 innings, 3 hits and one (1) run allowed on 80 pitches by Williamson! Where’s the Reds offense! Help a fellow out for Pete’s sake!

  56. JB

Freidl wants to know who is questioning his OPS!

    • jazzmanbbfan

No one on this site would ever do that ???????.

    • Jim Walker

I said as a comment to my original comment that my scheme to put a reverse jinx on him had paid off in spades. 😉

  57. Mark Moore

    TJ says, “Hold my beer”

Kind of crushed that. Well over the fence.

    • Mark Moore

And MattyMc tells TJ, “You hold MINE!”

  58. Melvin

Okay Friedl! Game tying homer! 🙂

  59. Melvin

McLain! Back to back. We take the lead! 🙂

  60. Dennis Westrick

Still can’t believe we’ve managed only one (1) run against a pitcher who had a pregame ERA near 10!

    • Dennis Westrick

      Correction! Only two (2) runs!

  61. Mark Moore

Just plain crushed it. Pfaadt’s head has to be spinning again.

  62. Hanawi

Alright. Starting to figure him out now.

  63. JB

Did somebody say where’s the offense?

  64. Melvin

Fraley!!! Back to back to back!!!! 🙂

  65. Mark Moore

Jobu found, sobered up again, and in the house.

The fireworks guy is running low on ammo.

Lot’s of noise for India 😀

Sadak’s head would have completely exploded if that happened.

  66. VaRedsFan

Who can dig up the numbers in Reds daytime home games.
    Runs per game?
I’m hearing alot of rumblings about the batter’s eye glare.

I’ll get Mark to send you some points.

    • Hanawi

From Baseball Reference, the home/road splits are basically the same. And they hit better overall during day games than night games. But don’t see the home/day combo.

  67. Mark Moore

I’m prepping to fix my T-bones, so I’m not commenting. Got the game on my phone which is about 1.5 batters behind. Them’s the breaks.

Nice inning from Gibault. Keep the Snakes in their place.

  68. Old-school

Gibault and Young have been outstanding this year. i never saw that coming.

  69. Matt McWax

Pfaadt was riding high until the lollipop guild knocked him out of his saddle.

  70. JB

Steer . Bat him anywhere. Play him anywhere. Guy is a stud.

    • MBS

There were people complaining that Steer was the leadoff today. That kid is a ball player.

      • Steve Schoenbaechler

        Agreed. He deserves regular play.

  71. VaRedsFan

109.3 mph on the Steer single.
    Hardest of the game.

  72. Jim Walker

Seeing as how my reverse jinx seems to have worked really well on Friedl, who should I target next??? 😉

    • JB

Votto. That might take a miracle. Got any of those left?

      • old-school

Let’s go now…need the Votto Mojo.
        2-28

      • Jim Walker

Nah, fresh out of miracles. (which is an inferred reverse jinx with Votto batting)

    • Hanawi

EDLC and Stephenson have been the next worst since the AS break after Friedl.

  73. Old-school

Elly scores in 1.2 seconds from 3rd…lol

    • Mark Moore

Great PH move by HDTBell. Upgrade the 3B defense as well. EDLC needed to watch this one closely.

      • Melvin

I didn’t particularly like it at the time taking Steer out after having two hits on the day since it’s not that hard to score from 3B. It worked out well though. Don’t know if Steer would have scored on that ball.

  74. Indy Red Man

Reds over 3.5 & Freidl to score. Had it all the way…lol

  75. JB

Friedl is at .289. That’s 7th best in the NL. Everybody goes into slumps. It’s a long season. He plays a great CF. I’ll take him until somebody else shows me they can hit big league pitching.

  76. MBS

I didn’t get to see the Reds back to back to back jacks, but I just saw them on Twitter. Monster Mac going upper deck!

  77. Jim

A lot of new faces at the ballpark, just is painful for them to see Votto like he is now.
Wish the young fans could have seen him 10 years or so. It is just bad to see him play like he has been. It does not help the team!

  78. JB

I don’t believe Carroll is the runaway favorite for rookie of the year. He is slumping since the break and coming back to Steer and now McLain.

  79. Jim Walker

Stu is not in the Louisville lineup tonight. Wonder if he is in or on his way to Cincy to travel with the team on this trip either as a callup or on taxi status??

    • Jim Walker

Or the Reds could be about to take an announce a trade???

    • MBS

Or he’s not good enough to get regular playing time in AAA. JK, Taxi squad seems likely.

      • Jim Walker

He has been batting leadoff every day and his AAA OPS was .998 at the end of Friday’s game.

And TBH, there is as good of or better case for bringing up Barrero. He had a so-so night Friday and is at an .950 AAA OPS at the end of the day Friday.

    • Colorado Red

Could also just be a day off?

    • Jim Walker

Yep, and they ain’t as cheap as they were back in Fullpack Stanhouse’s day either.

  80. LT

Ballgame. The last 2 sliders are filthy. Williamson deserves this W

    • TR

Williamson has been a pleasant surprise these last couple months for the Reds starting pitching needs.

Time to celebrate with my T-bones and the Caesar salad (homemade dressing).

Finished grilling just in time to watch the end of the 9th and the win.

Love the 3 guys with Day tonight. Great choice.

It seems like the good old days back in Riverfront at GABP right now. The game is over but the fans want an encore before they leave. Been there and felt that.

    • Dennis Westrick

Me too, Jim! Back in the BRM days at Riverfront Stadium!

      • Jim Walker

didn’t they typically pipe Joe’s Star of the Game through the stadium and (Green) Plaza level PA Riverfront when the Reds won in the 1970s?

That is sort of my recollection. Or maybe there were just so many folks piping it through the speaker on their transistor radio that it sounded that way?

Ive been to 3 games in the last month and we hung out a bit at the Bally’s area with Chris Welsh and it was loud. Banks are packed 2 hours before the game. One restaurant was out of food 1 hour before the game. One hot dog stand was out of buns in the 4th inning. We found a stand with little skyline buns to mix and match with a hot dog. Restrooms are packed, prices are absurd and lines are long.

Strange win but a win is a win! Nice outing by Williamson for the W! I would have sent him out to start the 7th but Bell had to be Bell and use at least 3 RPs!

  84. Indy Red Man

I’m almost shocked with Williamson. He didn’t have velocity or control those first few starts. Now he’s 93-95 and getting ahead in the count. He looks very solid

    • MBS

I think he lost a couple of MPH after he got here, at least that’s what I remember hearing on a Just baseball podcast. It looks like he’s picked them back up, and is able to locate more consistently. He was a top 100 prospect, lets hope he continues to deliver!

      “Getting ahead in the count.”

      Preach it.

Williamson’s interview … the hat and the Hawaiian shirt … 😀

So far I am not impressed by Arizona. Maybe they’re in a funk. Maybe our pitching is great (I doubt). Maybe it’s a match up thing.

    • Colorado Red

They are also a young team as a whole, ups and downs.

    • Moon

they took 2 of 3 from Atlanta just prior to playing Cincy. Atlanta is pretty good

Williamson, Phillips, Fraley for Suarez and Winker. Who doesnt do that again?

Mahle and 2nd round pick Boyd for Steer, CES, and Benson ultimately….who doesnt do that again?

    Naquin for 2 A studs?

Gray for Petty is probably the one thats arguable but I will still go young.

I love it ! These Reds are inexplicable … Three jacks back to back to back. Boom, Boom, Boom. And pick up an insurance run too. What can you say ? This season is miraculous !

It’s really nice to see some good pitching from the Redlegs. These guys deserve some kudos for rising up and performing.

Sorry, everyone, missed much of the game. Saw my sister after 2 years, after I just got out of C1-C2 fusion.

Bell pulled BW after 6? I did see his pitch count was about 30 after 3, so that meant 50 pitches for 4-6 innings. Did he look like he was struggling?

I mean, my initial thought was why. But, then, I thought of the pitch count, and it could be what I missed.

Loved the win. Myself, I would have given up 2 of the HR for 6 more hits, especially hits that would drive in runs, like the first inning. Start a rally. But, again, that’s just me.

Some were talking about Young last night and making only 3 pitches, how he will be needed with the Arizona LH bats the rest of the series. And, that went as planned tonight. But, only 7 pitches and still pull him to bring in Diaz? What if we need Diaz tomorrow now? Sorry, but it simply makes we wonder. Not just Reds but league wide, I thought the LOOGY’s were pretty much gone as a result of any of the new rule changes. And, I always thought of Young as better than just a LOOGY. And, his splits pretty much shows he’s equal between LH and RH bats. It just gets me to wonder. Because I called it back in April, this is how bullpens get taxed. And, everyone knows what we had prior to AS break, if not still.

Hey Steve. Glad you got time to spend with your sister. Hope she is on the mend. It was a great game and Reds young guys stepped up when it mattered and won a meaningful game.

      • Steve Schoenbaechler

        Thanks old school.

I was the one with the fusion.
