The Cincinnati Reds have called up right-handed reliever Tony Santillan from Triple-A Louisville. He will be the 27th player on the roster for the sort-of-kind-of doubleheader that will take place tonight after Monday night’s Reds and Giants game was suspended by rain in the top of the 8th inning. That game will resume tonight at 5:40pm ET and be followed by the regularly scheduled game between the two teams.
Santillan missed over a year between last summer and this summer as he recovered from a back injury, then a knee injury, then a hamstring injury. After his second rehab stint in Triple-A went without a hitch – at least in terms of remaining healthy – the Reds added Santillan back to the active roster two weeks ago. He then pitched on back-to-back days on July 6th and 7th, throwing a shutout inning against the Washington Nationals and a shutout inning against the Milwaukee Brewers.
He was then optioned to Triple-A Louisville where he joined the Bats bullpen. The All-Star break played a role in the situation, but he threw in just one game after being optioned by the Reds prior to today. Santillan threw a shutout inning with a walk and two strikeouts against Nashville on July 15th.
While you don’t want to count rehab stats against a guy, especially when he missed more than half of the season before, Santillan’s struggled with his control since starting his first rehab stint with Louisville back in April. In the 13 games he’s pitched this year between Louisville and Cincinnati he’s walked at least one batter in nine of them.
As the 27th player on the roster tonight, Santillan will have to go down to Triple-A tomorrow unless the team decides to officially recall him from Louisville to replace someone on the roster who was injured. Otherwise he has to remain in the minor leagues for at least 15 days after he was originally optioned.
I completely forgot about the 27th man for a DH day. Minor bonus.
I did, too. In my mind this isn’t a doubleheader, so I didn’t even really think about it until I saw the transaction lol
Options Math – players have to be down for 10 days unless injury, yes?
So he COULD be back up for good today??
Unless different rules apply when calling up the 27th spot for a DH day.
15 days for pitchers. Santillan can’t be recalled after this game unless he replaces a player who is put on the injured list.
Drats
One of these days I’ll remember that it’s now 15 days and not 10.
Hopefully Weaver doesn’t pitch like Weaver today. Not holding my breath though as he has been consistently bad this year.
