Cincinnati had to come from behind on Saturday to pick up a win, but a big home run and a highlight reel from the fastest man in the world helped get the job done. With the series evened up at one game each, the Reds will try to beat the Brewers again this afternoon in Milwaukee and take the series. First pitch is set for 2:10pm ET.

Ben Lively
Fresh off of the injured list, being activated this morning, Ben Lively is coming back from a pectoral injury that has cost him about two-and-a-half weeks on the shelf (he was sitting right next to the elf, in case you were curious). In his last two starts before heading to the injured list he had allowed two runs in each, covering 9.2 total innings.
Right-handed hitters have hit Lively better this season than lefties. They’ve hit for a .277 average this year, and they are walking a little bit more than lefties. They don’t make as much contact, but they are turning out more hits. Left-handed hitters do make more contact, but it’s not turning into his as often. But when they are getting hits, they are doing so with plenty of power.

Wade Miley
The Reds missed Miley when the teams met earlier this year. Miley missed a month between mid-May and mid-June. He was very good in his first three starts, giving up just two total runs in 15.0 innings, but his last time out saw the Cubs score four runs against him in 5.0 innings.
Left-handed hitters don’t get to face Wade Miley all that often, but when they have done so this season they have hit for a solid average. What they haven’t done is gotten on base or hit for power. Right-handed hitters aren’t hitting for much average or getting on base, either. They do make plenty of contact, they just haven’t been turning that into hits. But in the cases where they do turn that contact into hits, it’s been for a little bit of power.

News and Notes
Roster Moves
Ben Lively was activated from the injured list today to make the start for the Reds. He will take the spot on the active roster of Michael Mariot. He was just added to the 40-man roster and called up yesterday. Today he was designated for assignment and is off of the 40-man roster.
Christian Encarnacion-Strand hit two homers last night
Down in Triple-A, Christian Encarnacion-Strand homered twice and both of them were absolute missiles. The two home runs went a combined 910 feet. We’ve got video of both of them over here, and an update on how well the infielder has been hitting over the last week-and-a-half.
The MLB Draft starts tonight
While we will provide some information on the Reds draft picks made tonight here at Redleg Nation, over at RedsMinorLeagues.com we’re going to go further in depth with things throughout today, and we’ll be covering all three days and 20 rounds of the draft over there. If you’re looking for all of that information, here’s where we will be on day one. The draft tonight will cover rounds one and two, and it starts at 7:00pm. Cincinnati has three picks tonight, including the 7th overall pick.

Might just be my imagination that the Reds historically has done well against former pitchers. But being a southpaw Miley can be a handful for Reds hitters today. Can’t wait to see how Lively pitches in a playoff like atmosphere. Can’t wait to see how the game plays out
Guys the lineup looks solid. Glad Votto is in the lineup. And before everyone criticizes Bell for putting Newman in the lead off spot think about this; I’m not a Bell cheerleader, but who would have imagined at the All Star break we’d be in 1st place. The team seems to be tight and accepting of their roles, why can’t we just accept it and enjoy the run. Hopefully it will all play out in the end, with a great outcome.
The Dodgers have an ack owledged need for a RH hitting SS.
I wonder what is preventing the Reds from trading either Newman or the AAA Ss who is having a career year?
Love to see some young itching talent in return.
Just a curious thought. Does anyone have a way to recover what the Reds projected playoff chances were on July 9, 2021?
BBRef shows they had the 6th best record in the NL which was 2nd in the Central, -6 games to the Brewers, and trailing the Padres by 5.5 games (4 in the loss column) for the final WC spot.
I remember about a month ago they were sitting at 1.7%
Looking at fangraphs, Reds were 31-54 and odds to make playoffs were 0.0%
At midseason 2021, everybody pretty much had conceded that the NL West was going to get both WC spots in addition to the division winner in the playoffs. The question was who among the Giants, Dodgers, and Padres would win the division and leave the other 2 as the WC teams.
But then the Padres cratered in early August while the Reds ticked up to ~10+ to .500 and by August 22, the Reds were by the Padres and had a 5 game advantage over the 2nd place NL East team, the Phillies.
But then it was the Reds turn to nose dive as the Cards took off on that epic 17 game winning streak.
Moon, are you sure 2021 and 2022 aren’t crossed up somewhere?
BBRef has the 2021 Reds at 46-42 at the end of play on July 9, 2021.

Not sure but put down $100 on 2500-1 odds at MGM
Already did on June 2nd. $2600 payoff.
Almost time to Kick This Pig!!!
Miley has always been a human pitch clock, so nothing changes there. I’m hoping all our guys are sporting Hulk tattoos and perform to that level.
If we find a way to win today, you’ve got to figure Fangraphs puts us neck-and-neck with the Bernies. Gonna be a playoff atmosphere, as noted earlier.
Interested to see how EDLC does against another lefty, especially one as crafty as Miley.
For some crazy reason Bally is not showing the game today in Indy and I’m too close to Cincy for MLB. Stupid.
Attaboy, Newman. Set the table early. Get Miley off his game.
Newman just keeps hitting lefties.
They Bernie fans are booing EDLC? That’s a classy move.
No runs, but we’re putting the bat on the ball. That usually ends up producing good things.
Let’s see how Lively is feeling.
Basically crushed the ball 4 times in the top of the 1st. Miley was extremely fortunate. McClain needs to get Newman to 3rd, gotta hit it the other way.
Tough play for Steer. Slicing hard. But an experienced LF’er gets that one most of the time.
It’s going to be a learn as you go for Steer and Senzel in right. Not easy positions to learn on the fly.
Nope. Not easy at all. It’s the lumps we have to take at this point.
That was the crux of my comment below. I’d like Steer to keep playing on the corners of the infield, not the OF.
That’s an out every time with a good LF, but I’m not going to blame Steer because he has played very little left field. His initial steps were towards Center and the ball was actually the other way… he just got twisted around
And he was probably playing a couple steps shallow.
I like Steer, so don’t take this the wrong way, but he shouldn’t be playing in the OF. He’s made some nice plays out there, but I’d rather see Senzel, and Fairchild picking up the OF opportunities. Keeping Casali around is holding this team back
Yep…a wasted roster spot
I concur. Bring up CES and send Casali down.
Or Newman, pick your poison. Or move on from both and have spots for both CES and Fairchild.
Bingo
This is exactly what I’d like to see in the 2nd half.
Were I a betting man, I think we come out of the break minus one Curt Casali. He’s not getting any playing time to speak of and as a PH’er he’s well below what we need.
Figures … Da Wink delivers one.
I wouldn’t take Winker back if Milwaukee gave him to you for free and paid his salary…he is freaking terrible at every facet of the game.
I mentioned yesterday, he looks like he’s now a “lost boy”. He’s not long for MLB at this rate. Maybe not for baseball at all unless he heads to Korea or Japan.
Platoon baseball just cost the Reds a run.
And it is costing the Reds starter a lot of extra leverage pitches in this inning.
There is an opportunity cost for almost every reward.
Bad pitch to Wink, but only 1. I’d really like to see Ashcraft for 3-4 innings today. He’s young and we need this game
good thought on Ashcraft. I thought ahead of this series, they actually might option him to get an extra bat or reliever.
Yeah, it’s 15 days for a pitcher (unless an injury pops up) but the 5th game back on the 20th would be his 13th day. When was the last time this team went 13 days w/o a pitcher getting put on the IL???
Who’s pumped up for the Draft?
Our history of drafting HS players doesn’t excite me much. They end up being a long-range crapshoot. I’ll wait for it all to unfold and read what Doug and others have to say.
I am for sure … I lean more towards the McLain type picks who’ve played a few years D1 college ball vs the High School phenoms but we’ve done well with both so we shall see.
Scouts say planning at Division 1 colleges is like playing at high A or AA depending on the conference. Give me a solid college kid anytime.
I’m still recovering from the NHL draft which broke well for the Blue Jackets.
After they came up short in the lottery for the top spot and landed third, luck shined on them as the consensus #2 who most scouts pegged as a #1 overall in probably 75% of years fell to them for whatever reason!
These umps? I swear to God. It would be more tolerable if we got off the corners too, but usually we don’t
I feel like some of the reason we don’t get them is Stephenson is a poor receiver of the ball.
Why does the ump always screw Senzel? The pitch off of the outside of the plate is always called a strike on him. Always. Now they are calling that crap on the inside?
chumpires strike again!!!!!!
My God, that was no where near the strike zone. This is ridiculous.
That was a terrible call period.
And the low strike is not being called today. At least for now. Check back in the seventh inning. How would you like to be a hitter and the strike zone changes every day and with some umpires every inning
2nd guessing here and I admit it, but why not bunt McLain after Newmans double? You know Miley is coming inside so trying to take a shot to right is going to be tough for McLain
+1,000
These past couple of series should really convince almost everyone that the days of the human HP Chumpire need to be done. It’s way beyond the “human element” and they don’t seem to be adjusting at all. The game is about the players and they are, quite frankly, getting cheated regularly.
Late to the party ladies & gents! Thought game time was 4:10 EDT!
Based upon events so far, looks like Reds hitters, when they are making contact, are hitting the ball hard but right at someone!
Robo ump behind home plate cannot come too soon! All you expect from the HP umpires is consistency in calling balls & strikes for each team from the 1st inning thru the 9th inning!
Lively is dealing now.
No kidding! Let’s hope he bottled that inning and takes a sip in each subsequent inning. 😉
Is Ashcraft the first man in from the pen today?
Of course, Lively that inning looks unhittable.
Ashcraft will be first if needed early, but that doesn’t look likely at the moment.
Nice 3rd inning by Living Lively! Now, let’s put up a big crooked number and get into the Beers bullpen!
Nice hit by MattyMc … went with it and then made the Fish Guy attempt a throw.
By the way Mark, I blame Winker’s RBI single on you! I think Winker read your comment last night about being a Lost Boy!
Why does it seem like ex-Reds pitchers always do well when they pitch against the Reds?
Lively has given up 2 runs or less in 7 out of 9 games. You take away the two game of 5 and 7 runs and he has been lights out. Not sure why everybody is down on him.
You are correct! Lively’s pitched well. He throws strikes. I like that.
That’s why you don’t bunt McClain. That’s why you bunt India
India pressing too much on that whiff.
Up to Elly …
Nope
India? What the h is he doing? Other then an occasional HR in garbage time he’s mostly useless
India’s plate discipline is, shall we say, lacking?
I’d take the pressure off of him by at minimum swapping him and Steer in the batting order.
India is scuffling. No reason for him to play all 90 games or whatever it is. I’m going with he is tired. Needs a break and a better plan 2nd half the season for more regular rest.
I think that’s likely, Old-school.
This 2023 team is special, and they need a nickname. I am not good at naming things, but It feels like it should have something to do with Electricity, speed, or youth.
1970’s TV fans might like “The Electric Company” but that’s too centered around 1 man, and not the team.
You know, I’ve long wondered:
What’s the story behind the “revving the motorbike” followed by the “rowing the boat” gesture the players make when they hit a double?
Aside from the leadoff double, that inning was all Wade Miley (with help from India).
Have to remind myself we’re still in sole possession of first no matter what.
Well, help from EDLC and Steer; nearly identical AB’s.
I’m giving them passes that inning. They are young and still learning. India knows better (IMO).
Me, too, but I’m giving India a pass, too. Miley is pitching well and , more to the point, knows how to pitch. So far only Newman and McClain have gotten hits.
3 strikouts all swinging at high and away fastballs…basically just like Abbott when he is throwing the ball well like the prior outing vs the Padres
Although it is happening against us, I love watching Miley pitch. It really is an art form the way he does it.
Made no bets today on the game because of Miley. He is just to hard to bet against. Never gives up a lot of hits.
I think the break is coming at a good time for Steer. He’s had a terrible series…doesn’t seem to be seeing the ball very well.
I really hope after the All Star Break they really think about moving India to the 7 or 8 spot.
When they moved India to 3rd they were looking for some power. They really dont need him there anymore for power.
The power this team needs is playing in Louisville! Free CES!
How could you not? Truly out of his depth hitting 3
@Beaufort, Yes, hopefully so.
Despite the success of this team so far this season, they have to be one of the top teams in strikeouts with RISP! Just keep it close and see what happens!
Very inefficient offense. Did not advance, not score, just advance, lead off double, twice. And Miley is good but not elite. This is as big a problem as lacking SP in the playoffs.
It’s called Small Ball I believe! Foreign concept to Bell!
They lead or nearly lead MLB in stolen bases and they consistently take the extra base. They’re in first place but aren’t among the leaders in homers. Sounds like a lot of small ball. Friedl bunts; he’s good at it. Do we know that anybody else bunts well?
Sadly, this is my criticism lately. We are winning, but not playing clean amd aggressive baseball like we were earlier this year. Before the power came, we manufactured a lot of runs. To win in the pot season or against quality starters you have to still do that.
Actually I like India, but he’s scuffling pretty badly. We’re not getting a top pitcher for him with the way he’s going? Got a guy playing in a bandbox that does very little on the road. I do like his on base game with all the hbp’s. If his ego could take it then 9th.would be ok. Just platoon with Freidl 1 & 9
M? theory on India is he’s trying to hit for power because he’s in the 3rd spot at the expense of hitting for contact. Power is not his game. He’s better at 1 or 2 spot and hitting single to get in base.
Miley is solid, but he’s not elite as someone said. And now everybody has seen him, so less surprises. Time to get into his head and put up some Crooked Numbers.
Lively is definitely doing his part so far. Even the run isn’t really on him.
Lively’s location looks as sharp as it did his first couple of starts.
Anybody else see that commercial for that “MLB All-Star Red Carpet Show”?
Anybody else find it ridiculous? 😀
Another hard hit wasted. UGH!!
We have hit a lot of balls into very hard outs…like the absolute rocket Steer just hit into the DP. I’ll bet that ball was well over a 105 mph…that thing was absolutely scorched but it took a perfectly easy hop for the third baseman into a easy double play. Miley is getting very lucky so far….Lively is actually pitching better so far.
+1,000
That was Senzel
Sensational at bat by Friedl.
That’s the way to get in Miley’s head.
Or just tired him out. He probably has 1 more inning in him and Reds offense will go to work against their bullpen. Votto walk was good too.
Time for a little 2-out bingo here.
Nope
Shadows got Newman I think. That was a Weaver-like 0-2 meatball there
Most likely. Tough shadow line for any hitter.
A little bit. I think it was a bit elevated, not righ down broadway
Yep… that ball should have been absolutely crushed by Newman…terrible pitch by Miley… right down the middle in the sweet spot. Miley has been incredibly lucky today all the way around.
A 93 mile & hour fastball right down the middle of the plate & Neuman swings right thru it….unbelievable
Platoon baseball, love it>>Reds 5th> platoon hitter GIDP; Platoon hitter Ks on 3 pitches with 2 men on base.
And I’m sure glad they gave Miley away. That guy is terrible.
He pitched in 9 games for the Cubbies last year. Probably the right call, in hindsight considering the contract and the youngsters they wanted to give the opportunity towards.
When he’s on (and healthy), he’s a fun one to watch.
There was obviously room for Wade Miley in the rotation in 2021 and 2023. Cutting Miley was a financial decision not a baseball decision.
I mean there was room for Miley in the rotation in 2022 and 2024
Wait Senzel smokes one to third and it was a great play by Anderson and you bellyache about a platoon player hitting into a double play? Lol my lord I’ve read it all on here.
Need some runs now.
Two things I couldn’t wait to see unfold turned out to be a wash so far. Lively is handling pressure packed game just fine, but ?n above average southpaw like Miley give the Reds hitters problem.
The Reds have hit a lot of balls hard… Miley has been extremely fortunate today.
🙂
Now is the time….can’t waste this start by Lively
Couple of solid singles. Starting to get to Miley (finally).
But he’s an escape artist. Votto had an ok pitch to hit there, a little bit low, and Justin just missed. But at 94 pitches, that should be it for Miley.
Steer is 0 for the series so far. ASG break probably coming at a good time for him
Steer has struggled badly on this road trip. Hopefully the break is beneficial for him.
Reds have like 8 SO vs Noodle arm Miley…jeez
I know some like him and others say the commentator curse doesn’t exist but for the love of all things holy can we get rid of Sadak please. If the lag wasn’t so bad between 700 WLW and Bally Sports Ohio I’d listen to the radio and watch the game on mute.
When the petition to fire Sadak is created, just tell me where to sign.
+50,000
I wonder if Bally knows how bad he is.
I’m with you. He’s a loud mouth,..and a jinx. I’d love to sign a petition to get rid of him.
I have no tv coverage today and the lag is at least three pitches behind.
For anyone who watches F1, he’s sort of like David Croft. He’s got a good voice, and he has some good references that are occasionally well-timed.
However, he is just too focused on other things that aren’t the product they are supposed to be presenting. And like Crofty’s man crush on Lewis Hamilton, dude, Sadak is a little too hot for Elly… Show a little restraint there, bud…
Reds still have time.Big game today and after yesterdays win it means up by 3 or up by 1 at the break.BIg chance to create some separation.GO REDS
Long, noisy out … time to get to the Bernies bullpen.
Time to take Elvis to Heartbreak hotel
+500 😀
No doubt he was “all shook up” yesterday.
How many strikeouts do the Reds have on just 3 pitches today? Incredibly…
Brewers are pounding the zone, but I think this could also be due to some of the flexi-zone that we have seen this series. Hard to take a pitch that’s anywhere close.
Reds hitters already think we are on All-Star break
I think it has a lot do with the shadows in that stadium. I have been to that ballpark. I am not a fan.
What a great pitching duel.
The Reds are going to give us a thrilling victory heading into the ASG break. Just be patient and believe!
Platoon Baseball>> Reds 6th inning, regular starting LH hitter enters game cold vs RH pitching and looks bad K’ing on a ball in the dirt.
Coming off the bench midgame is not the same as being in from the start even if you know you’ll be in if/when the oppo send in a RH pitcher. It has often been said PH is the hardest offensive job in baseball; and, that’s what this 1st PA essentially becomes.
Everyone has struggled today. You can pretend it hasn’t, but platoon baseball has undeniably been a huge success for this team.
As the talent level improves with players who do not need to be platooned, the team should move on from it though.
It causes unnecessary complication and burns roster spots that could used better in other ways.
Yeah. Having to platoon is not ideal.
Yep. Was making this same point in the other thread about CES. Reds have gotten into bad matchups late in some games due to the platoon issue. Having one or two guys is fine, but Reds have about 5-6 guys with severe splits.
Yes. They need to get back to that.
Then is it fair to say some would be upset and complain that so and so cant hit right handed or left handed pitching.
People seem to be so stat driven these days.
Myself I am all for the best 9 playing and give days off accordingly.
Me too; and, the last time I checked, by overall OPS Fraley would be in that top 9 group for the Reds just to make that point given what I have said about trading him.
India needs a break also
McLain really picked him up there.
looks that way
This is who India is as a player…it is what it is. Like I said a few times lately, I’m all for trading India because second base is where McClain should be, Elly at SS, Steer at 3rd and then Votto and then CES at first.
Speaking of CES… him sitting on the bench being available to ph versus Casali might have mattered in today’s game?
Leave Steer in left. That is where his future is. If they trade India then CES can man 3rd for the rest of the year. Marte is your 3rd baseman of the future which will probably be opening day 2024
+100,000
Maybe a “break” wearing someone else uniform?
*someone else’s uniform
Miley is quirky LH who changes speeds and locates and just pitched a great game. Brewers bullpen good. Tough day so far but Reds offense has been shut down across the board 4-26 with 12k’s so far. All it takes is a bloop and a blast tho’
India isn’t bringing much to the table right now.
I have been against trading India for chemistry issues, but I am beginning to change my mind. The more I watch I am beginning to think he is just an average player.
Not good
Stupid Brewers. Reds just can’t seem to get over the hump against them. Not going to give up yet, but starting to look grim for this game. 3 games series after the break is big.
Well, Gibaut somehow got out of it with no more damage. Still a chance here.
EDLC is a one-man highlight reel.
India with a great play.
Excellent focus and presence on that one.
De La Cruz maybe showing why he should be in the outfield from what radio says. Great difficult catch.
He tracked it the entire way. Steer knew to back off. And the Bernies knew NOT to run on him.
And EDLC felt robbed of the chance to make a highlight throw when the BeerBoys didn’t test him.
Umm no.
Just call Gibault Houdini that inning.
Tell EDLC didn’t feel cheated out of a chance to make a highlight throw off a highlight catch when the Brewers did not test his arm on the popup caught with his back to the plate moving away from the infield 😉
Lively’s era is 3.83 . I did not know that lol
You take the two games of 5 and 7 runs out and he is lights out 8 out of 10 games.
I was thinking he wasn’t too bad in the rotation. Thanks for that info
Reds just can’t settle for 1 win in this series.GO REDS
Joey loves hitting in Milwaukee. Maybe a little Joey magic.
Nope. Still in first. A lot of guys need the rest. Especially the bullpen.
What a great pitching battling between these two teams today.
Reds 50-41
1st place
Fun team to watch
Agree.
Ironically enough two former Reds had a hand in beating the Reds today.
Yep.
Cowboy called it on Winkers first at bat. Counsell put a 197 batter in the fourth spot for a revenge game.
A primary takeaway from this game and series for me is that our boys are really tired. I think they pressed more than a little extra today, and they just couldn’t pull it off. I have to think back to a point where I would have been satisfied with taking 1 of 3 against the Bernies in their own house. That building hope they’ve injected, made me want 2 of 3. But at least we’re still in first headed into this break.
No baseball until next Friday … what am I going to do with all my free time?
See you all on the flip side.
Primary takeaway for me was the Brewers were more focused on this series than we were. I don’t think they as good as we are, but they still took 2 of 3 when they needed to. The rest you mentioned should help, and the next 3 games need to be played like it’s an elimination round.
Reds offense just didn’t show up today.Never expected that after such a big big win yesterday.Nothing more to say they just never showed up at all.
I give it to great pitching by Miley. Sometimes you just need to tip the cap and give credit where credit is do.
Maybe because the platoon guys who bat RH aren’t really as good vs LH pitching as their small sample OPS stats for this year. Or at least that is what their career stats suggest.
Newman in 2023 before today vs LH pitching>>.897 OPS; Career>.742 OPS
Senzel in 2023 vs LH pitching>>1.032OPS; Career>.759 OPS
Inexcusable performance. They’ve now dropped 5 of 7 to the Brewers. This was a statement game and the Brewers made it. The Reds are more fun than years past but aren’t there yet.
Stay off the ledge Eeyore.
Seriously, competitive teams don’t drop 5 of 7 to their division rival. That’s not Eeyore, that’s simply truth. I’ve said for the last few weeks that folks were getting ahead of themselves. The Reds have a ways to go before they are a serious post season competitor
Yep. Dropping 5 of 7 to your rivals. That’s called “choking”. Not Lively. He was a man’s man. He deserved better. The sad fact is we have to play them the next three games after the break.
Its not like the Reds were blown out and today’s game you tip your cap to the opposing team.
I totally disagree with the term “choking” Just a ridiculous overreaction
Talk about overreactions…try to get in touch with reality. Steer and India are slumping bigtime. We faced their top 2 SP, meanwhile 2 of our top 3 are on the DL. Their only run comes on a misplayed fly ball in the 1st, meanwhile in our 1st inning we hit four balls very hard…three right into easy outs, including Elly’s screamer right at 2nd with Newman on 3rd. Steer hit a an absolute rocket into a inning killing dp in the 5th or 6th with 0 outs…stuff happens in a long season like baseball. Trajectory is way up for the Reds, meanwhile the Brewers got all the breaks and barely eked out a 2-1 series at home…because the talent of their starting 8 is way below the Reds. And in a long season like baseball talent is going to win out unless injuries interefere. Blue skies ahead
Poopy. Still in first by ourselves at the all star break.
We needed CES up for this game against the left handed Miley. Lively deserved better. Simple as that.
And CES would have just ripped through Miley despite the fact that an entire lineup of MLB players who are 10th in MLB in on base percentage, per Scorecard, couldn’t do squat. Strains credibility.
We will just never know,..will we? What we do know is that we were shut out today. Nada. That’s a fact.
A very bad offense day… 14 Ks… I hate that was against Brewers… The Reds underperform against that team….I hope the next week series Reds shows his true game level and win 2 of 3 at least at GABP
Another rotation piece emerging. A bright light in an otherwise tough loss. I hope our left-handers especially were watching Miley in action.
Emerging? Lively has generally pitched well all year. It’s Weaver that stinks.
By not scoring a single run in this game the reds cost themselves 2 games in the standings….think about that at the end of the season when we are battling them for the division title
LMAO
Reds are 43-26 since starting the year 7-15.
That is 23 games over 500..
I’m gonna go out on a limb and say that if we play 23 games over .500 the rest of the way we will win the division. 🙂
Wierd game…only run is a misplayed easy flyball in the 1st. Reds hit enough balls hard…Elly smoked a liner right at 2nd in the 1st that scores a run and still batting. Is what it is… but honestly I feel even better about our chances in the second half than I did coming into the series cuz I’m just not that impressed with the Brewers after watching them for 3 games. We got 2 of their 3 best starters and Abbott had his first bad game where he couldn’t locate. If the Brewers were better overall I’d be more concerned, but they just aren’t that good. Think about our record since the 7-15 start…vs. the Brewers record since that same point in time. Look at how horrific the Reds starting rotation has been the first half…partially due to the injuries to 3 of the 5 starters who are going to be coming back fairly soon. Today was an anomoly for the Redlegs.
Lively was great today and hopefully he’s good for the 2nd half.
Exactly, going forward, would you swap their 26 for our 26? I don’t think so. Now, it if the trade was Counsell for Bell, I’d have to think about it :-)Dayt
+1000 This wouldn’t take too much thinking for me. 😉 And I would definitely be sure I was not overthinking it.
What’s encouraging is that the Reds lead the Brewers by a game despite having gone 2-5 against the Brew Crew. So the Reds are +4 games against the rest of the league than are the Brewers. I’ll take that with the balanced schedule. The Brewers lose a couple of game against the Reds, those games are now against the rest of the league where the Reds have a nice advantage over the Brewers.
Plus the Brewers have to play the Braves six times in July coming out of the break …good luck with that.
Hopefully the Braves will do to them what they did to us,..you know, beat them 5 out of 6. We lost 5 out of 6 to the Braves,..and 5 out of 7 to the Brew Crew. Depressing numbers indeed. Maybe when we get Greene and Lodolo back in the second half we can compete a little better. Huh? How’s that for optomistic?
typo,…”optimistic”
I am extremely proud of what the Reds have accomplished since they brought up the youth, and I have high hopes for the rest of this season and seasons to come. But that does not mean that today’s game was not important. I posted yesterday that Miley would probably hang up a string of goose eggs on the scoreboard against us. That was no surprise to me. He’s a great pitcher. I wish we had him. I’m just upset that we wasted Lively’s great game. Shut out? Disappointing, tstl. Oh well. That’s baseball. But it surely will be nice when we start really competing against the cream of the crop,..i.e. the Brewers and the Braves. And I’m not talking moral victories either. But after losses like this one I have to remind myself that the season is only half over too. So,…go Reds!!!
Just hard to find a silver lining in a 1-0 loss that costs 2 games in the standings.Reds punched out 14 times had a man at second 3 times with no outs and never moved him. They settled for that win yesterday and to be honest I would never have dreamed they would roll over today cause if theres one thing they have not done its roll over and settle.I believe in them and I am sure they are not happy so we play on.
Hard to see the ball in the shadows. It was just one of those days. A couple of hard hit balls right at people too
