Luke Weaver

Coming off of back-to-back road starts that saw him walk more batters in each game than he struck out. The Reds have won each of his last four starts, and the game prior to that saw Weaver throw 6.1 shutout innings.

Both lefties and righties have found success against Luke Weaver this year. Right-handed hitters have found more success, though, hitting .317 and slugging .590. Righties aren’t walking much, but they are hitting a bunch. Left-handed hitters don’t strike out much, but they aren’t quite hitting as well as righties are. That said, they are still hitting .281 and showing a bunch of power.

AJ Smith-Shawver

It has been an incredible rise for AJ Smith-Shawver. Drafted out of high school in 2021 in the 7th round, he didn’t pitch above Low-A until this season. He made three starts in High-A before being promoted to Double-A where he made two more starts before being promoted to Triple-A where he made two more starts before being promoted to join the Braves. He will not turn 21-years-old until November.

Looking at his splits is tough to put a huge amount of stock into because he’s thrown a max of three games at four different levels, and just 25.1 innings between Triple-A and the big leagues. With that said, he’s been beyond dominant against left-handed hitters this season. Right-handed hitters haven’t done a lot, either, but they’ve shown some power and are walking at a good clip against him.

Should be a great crowd tonight. It will be interesting to see tonight’s attendance.

  2. Daytonnati

Braves have a very impressive lineup. Sean Murphy not playing for his homecoming??

  3. GJF

Connor Phillips starting tonight vs. BLX. Why not ATL? This feels like a “throwaway” game.

  4. Harry Stoner

I’m expecting ‘Dream’ Weaver to be pummeled this evening.

Having the law firm of Busenitz & Bracho on hand to mop up seems like good planning.

Here’s hoping we see Ashcraft return to form tomorrow.

Not getting swept will be a victory.

  5. Mark Moore

Tough lineup to face regardless of who we put on the mound. Starting this series with a win, especially with Joey in the line-up and a packed house, would be extra super sweet.

I’m in for the ride tonight (except for what should be a relatively quick call around 7:30 EDT).

    Time to Kick This Pig!!!

    • Mark Moore

Oh, and aren’t you glad it’s the Stupid Cubs and the WLB Dirty Birds who drew the short straws to play in London? Frankly, that whole publicity stunt is ridiculous IMO. Kind of like the old post-season Japan tours.

      • Daytonnati

MLB not exactly sending their best 🙂

I thought they wanted to EXPAND the popularity?

  6. Ted Alfred

Just saw that the Braves starting pitcher tonight was drafted out of high school in 2021 and he’s only 20 years old. Last year 2022 the highest level he pitched at was low A ball. This year he pitched three games in high A, two games in AA, two games in Triple A and now he’s making his 4th start in the majors tonight. I think the Reds need to be a little more aggressive with Connor, who’s crushing it a double A….especially considering the starting pitching problems we have. The Braves are proven to be the way better organization over the last 30 years and they seem to have no problem bringing guys up very quickly, even starting pitchers

    • Daytonnati

Strider spent less than an year in the minors as well. I think he was coming out of college though?

    • AllTheHype

Reds have had Phillips on a pitch count between 90-100 every game, and he didn’t get past the 5th inning with that pitch count until his 11th game this year. He’s got a ways to go before he’s ready.

    • Doc

Weaver pitching tonight making that decision easier.

  7. Mark Moore

Starts by nibbling and then offers up a cookie … not a good approach.

    • Mark Moore

Yeah … definitely not the way to approach this lineup.

  8. MBS

Weaver starting is almost a crime against the team.

  9. Melvin

Have to calm down here and keep the damage to a minimum.

  10. Mark Moore

We escape this mess down only one run … and WOW!!!

    • Mark Moore

Spoke too soon. Grooved another one. 😮

    • Melvin

Not quite. Nice to have a team that you feel like you can come back with plenty of fire power though. Bring up CES too!

  11. Ted Alfred

Weaver needs to be out of the rotation soon….1st batter 3-1, 2nd 3-0, 4th 3-0 yada yada yada…4-0

  12. JB

Looks like the Reds will have to add to their come from behind wins.

  13. Mark Moore

Could be easy to Clete tonight and turn my attention elsewhere. I really don’t think the game is going on the TV screen with audio on.

  14. AllTheHype

It’s not just one game that Weaver affects. The BP will be overworked again soon and that carries over.

I hate to say it, but he might just have to eat this game for 4-5 IP at least so we can save the BP somewhat.

    • VaRedsFan

Was about to type the same thing. You saved me the trouble.

  15. Gpod

Weaver has been putting the ball consistently right over the middle of the plate …it was only a matter of time before they crushed one….Weaver stinks

  16. JB

Weaver only signed for 2 million. I would bet they cut him loose after this start. He just doesnt have it. 40 pitches so far in the first .

  17. Moon

5-0 already…Weaver at 40 pitches already. As I posted during Weavers last start, he is not one of the answers. There have to be better options

  18. Melvin

Well it’s safe to say I think that we’d better get Weaver OUT OF THERE NOW….if we want to win. 🙂

  19. Reddawg2012

Luke Weaver should not have a spot on this roster.

  20. GreatRedLegsFan

Not a good idea to open this series with Weaver, actually not a good idea at all to still have him it in the rotation.

    • Ted Alfred

Nope… and we make it really easy for their 20-year-old starter who was in a high school 2 years ago because now he can pitch with no fea up 5-0.

  21. LDS

So much for the winning streak. Atlanta’s will be at 11 when they rollout Sunday. And why in the world is Weaver still in?

      • LDS

You bet you @JB. I just don’t party with losers.

      • Melvin

“I just don’t party with losers.”

        Hahahaha!!!! You guys are hilarious.

      • LDS

@Melvin, maybe they stage a comeback but I’d bet against it.

      • LDS

Yes it would. Might help if Stephenson could catch more often.

      • Melvin

“Might help if Stephenson could catch more often.”

        I’m for that.

      • LDS

Not quiet @Kurt. I had logged out. Just checked back end to see the final score. And man was I surprised

      • Melvin

I know you’re a BIG Reds fan LDS. Just enjoy it buddy. 🙂

  22. JB

Did they say if anybody was up in the bullpen?

  23. Ted Alfred

43 pitches in the 1st inning, behind to every batter. How could Connor in AA possibly be worse? Weaver has been literally terrible for 6 weeks straight. 20 minutes into the game and you basically have no chance to win and are likely going to crush your Bullpen for the next three or four games…just fantastic. He needs to be gone soon.

  24. Gpod

I wouldn’t pay this guy $1 to pitch for my team

    • Ted Alfred

Just checked his stats. This is his 12th straight start in the rotation and he’s pitched 57 Innings with a 7.14 era. That’s right, an ERA over 7 after 12 games and he still starting for the Reds. I was really, really excited for this series but I was terrified of the Reds pitching matchups without Greene or Abbott, especially starting off Friday night with Weaver… just sucked all the air right out of the team and right out of the stadium.

  25. Redgoggles

I’m missing Benson in the lineup.

    • Mark Moore

Saving him to pitch later tonight. Stay tuned.

  26. Mark Moore

So an in-game ERA of 45.0 … that works.

I realize we’ve come to expect more, but he might as well serve them up on a tee.

To quote that great philosopher Charlie Brown, “Good Grief!”

    • JB

Are you calling Weaver Ricky Karcher? Because that’s not fair to Ricky

      • SlippinJimmy

At least the batters fear Ricky Karcher. Nobody fears Weaver. I mean, no-ho-ho-body…

    • Melvin

Karcher did almost the exact same thing last night and got out of it again. lol WILD MAN! 🙂

  27. Mark Moore

OK, Bravos, here’s what we’re going to do …

We’re only gonna play an 8-inning game and our first 3 won’t hit out of the gate. And we’ll spot you 5 runs.

    That work?

    • JB

It’s far from over if Weaver can calm down and quit throwing strikes down the middle

      • Mark Moore

Oh, I agree. That graphic they showed of the 1st inning pitches was VERY telling. About 50% 4-seamers and most of them out of the zone.

  28. Soto

You have to give the Reds front office a lot of credit for the Reds success this year… But… Everyone who has watched the Reds like the people on this night, saw this coming. Weaver just isn’t a MLB starter. It’s like throwing away a game. This was night the night to throw away. Too big of a crowd, too big of a streak, too much momentum to just throw away. Shame on the Bull and shame on Bell. Every game counts. This team, city and fanbase deserve better.

    • Ted Alfred

Exactly. Starting Weaver was basically starting the game with two hands tied behind your back. When the team, the city and the crowd has this much momentum on a Friday night this was a very poor decision by David Bell. Weaver has been essentionally terrible for a while. The other problem with getting your brains kicked in the first game is the Braves are the best team in the National League and you needed to make a stand and play well win or lose in this first game. I can see us getting totally mentally discombobulated for the rest of the series due to how this is starting.

  29. Ted Alfred

  30. Melvin

Mr. “I can play anywhere” Steer in left. 🙂

  31. Soto

What’s the over/under on how many runs Weaver gives up tonight?

    • VaRedsFan

Braves team total for the WHOLE GAME was 5.5…

  32. JB

Would like to see if Weaver gives up a lot of his runs in the first. Is he a guy that needs an opener ?

    • LT

Is it 1st inning or 1st inning pitched? I wonder. If it’s 1st inning pitch, maybe change his warm up routine?

  33. Reddawg2012

This isn’t really surprising. The Reds starting pitching is bad and we’ve all kind of known it would eventually catch up with them. Especially against one of the top teams in MLB. Hopefully, Greene and Lodolo get healthy, maybe a trade can be made, and the Reds can weather the storm. The next few series are going to be really tough.

  34. Mark Moore

2nd time through the line-up and he works a clean inning. Go figure 😮

  35. VaRedsFan

Is this the definition of eating innings?

  36. JB

I’m surprised that hit by EDLC didn’t knock the wall down

  37. Gpod

I looked at Weavers lifetime stats & cannot figure out why the reds thought he was a guy you would want on your team

  38. Melvin

De La Cruuuuuuuuz! DOUBLE off the wall! 🙂

  39. Dennis Westrick

Late to the show as usual as I had to clean storm debris from my pool! It’s obvious that Weaver is NOT part of the long term plan!

  40. JB

So is this game still over? Inquiring minds want to know

  41. VaRedsFan

Rake gives ’em something to cheer about

  42. Old-school

    Trade Fraley !!!!!!!!
Hes one of the best lefty hitters in baseball

    Get rid of him

    • Harry Stoner

I think much of that is coming from the Fairchild Society here.

Nate Silver doesn’t parse statistics to the same extent.

If Fraley’s ‘handedness’ is such an issue, how does that affect his potential trade value?

Sure, he’s streaky, but very productive.

On track for 20-25 hrs, 100 rbis.

    • Mike Adams

I didn’t think a sensei could be sarcastic.
      You are confusing this grasshopper.

  43. Soto

This team has a lot of fight. I never count them out. Imagine if they didn’t have to start in the hole almost every night.

    • Melvin

It’s not fun not coming back. Don’t you know? 🙂

  44. CI3J

Votto is really pressing. He’s swinging at pitches way outside the strike zone, which is unusual for him. Seems like he wants to prove that he belongs on this burgeoning offensive juggernaut.

    • Gpod

That’s exactly what I thought after that 2nd game he played

      • WCRon

He seems to be totally out of sorts. Pulling off pitches

  45. SlippinJimmy

Votto lookin like a mafia hitman in those city connect unis.

      • Melvin

Like I said before they all look like “cat burglars” to me. 🙂

      • Daytonnati

        Like Ben Stiller’s dodgeball team.

    • CI3J

Little too much lift and not enough drive.

      • Soto

Must have been a little on the end of the bat. Launch angle looked pretty good. I thought he had it.

  46. Dennis Westrick

Weaver at 59 pitches thru only 2 innings! Yikes!

    • Harry Stoner

Keeping Dream Weaver on a pitch count seems a bit silly.

He made the mess. Let him mop it up.

  47. Mark Moore

Keep clawing your way back into this boys. Gonna need a LOT of crooked numbers.

  48. Gpod

Kind of back in this game….if one guy gets on, get the bullpen up

  49. Old-school

Is there really anyone out there honestly saying Jake fraley needs to be traded. yes the Reds need pitching. Yes Jake fraley is one of the Reds best hitters…True true unrelated. Stuart Fairchild cant remotely hit a baseball like Jake Fraley can. Abject stupidity saying Fraley needs to be traded and Stuart Fairchild needs to play instead. Thank goodness Nick Krall is the GM.

    • Harry Stoner

You’re going to yank some RLN chains that way…..

Expect the careful statistical parsing to come your way.

    • Soto

I think most people on RLN agree that Fraley absolutely rakes against Right hand pitching.

      • Harry Stoner

And his current production matches or exceeds what anyone else has provided against both RH and LH.

Sure, OPS, etc. are valuable statistics, but I’ll go with rbis, too.

  50. DHud

Man, imagine if we had started a pitcher who didn’t just immediately throw the game away

  51. JB

Weaver still in. David Bell – Thrill Seeker.

  52. LT

We’re in this until we’re not. I expect the offense to cover between 6-8 runs. It’s the strength of the team right now.

  53. Soto

That’s three balls that the Braves have hit that I thought were gone off the bat. Maybe that’s the key to Weaver having success… Deep flyball outs that appear to be gone.

    • Soto

Hope he keeps it up for a couple of more innings.

  54. Melvin

Friedl with a leadoff walk JB. 🙂

  55. WCRon

Why don’t they have benson in the lineup and have Votto dh and Stephenson coach. Steer should be at first. Can’t Fraley play RF. I am not that smart. Can someone explain please

  56. Dennis Westrick

One more inning for Dream Weaver at best!

  57. Mark Moore

That’s two less-than-stellar AB’s for MattyMc to start this game. Hoping he can go back to being more selective.

  58. Soto

Nasty pitch from the young right hander to retire McClain. Tip of the hat.

  59. Reddawg2012

It might be time to move McLain out of the two hole, at least temporarily. I’m not hating, but he’s a rookie and he’s been struggling. Take some of the pressure off.

  60. Mark Moore

Brutal! Same pitch he got Matty on.

    • Soto

I could be wrong, but the pitch to India looked like a slider. McClain’s was a really good Combio.

  61. Mark Moore

EDLC says, “Here, youngster … let me show you!”

    Back in it!

  62. Soto

I’m really glad that Dude plays for my team. Elly!!!!

  63. LT

EDLC told TJ “don’t waste energy running. I hit a HR to get you in”

  64. JB

So is it still over? Like what have people been watching for the last month?

    • Mark Moore

My concern was founded in Weaver continuing to give up hits. Holding them down for 2 innings puts a lot of hope back in the equation for me. We know our guys can mash it.

  65. Mark Moore

Keep chipping away. That’s the ticket.

Somebody’s win streak ends tonight, so it might as well be the Bravos.

  66. Harry Stoner

EDLC sticks w the curveball and clobbers it.

I think ATL bench voiced a collective “Uh-oh.”

    Maybe same w NL Central.

Could he be adjusting this fast?

      • Jason Franklin

McClain seems to be having a offspeed/changeup issue right now. I am sure he will be fine, but there should be some worry?

      • Harry Stoner

Check…. McL in need of adjustment #2 right about now.

EDLC looking better against off speed junk than week 2.

Curve could have hung, or he could have tracked it.

He hasn’t been as fooled by changeups recently.

You don’t want to throw a mistake to him.

    • Mike Adams

Hope so. Didn’t he adjust fast when he came up to AAA?

  67. old-school

Reds gotta win 9-7 every game. Need the offense 1-9. Elly and Fraley crushing Rh pitching and brought the reds back in this game

    Lefty hitters matter

    • JB

And Senzel crushes left handed pitching. I believe leads the league or close. Put him with Fraley and watch them go.

  68. JB

So here it is. Weaver has given up 41 runs this year, 19 in the first inning. Almost a half of his run total is in the first. If that don’t scream opener , I don’t know what does.

    • Soto

Good point. If they are going to keep rolling him out there, it’s at least worth a try. I would prefer to make him the mop up long reliever. At least that way they can feel like they got something for their 2 million. The last reliever rarely pitches anyway.

    • JA

Someone above mentioned something interesting… maybe he needs to adjust the warm up routine

  69. Melvin

Weaver woke up a little. haha Stay AWAKE! 🙂

  70. Jason Franklin

Who gets called up when Weaver is DFA’d? Kennedy? Or do they roll with the youth movement? Is it too early for the young guys in AA?

    • JB

Maybe try an opener for Weaver next game. If that doesn’t work then let him go.

  71. Soto

Good execution on the run-down. Text book.

  72. Harry Stoner

Interesting that Bell goes with Duarte instead of the law firm.

    Not throwing in the towel.

EDLC has cycle on his ‘to-do’ list.

  73. Harry Stoner

    Acuna has 33 SB already.

Not since Alex Acuna, master drummer for Weather Report, Los Lobos, et al.

    • Soto

Jam on Stoner. Love me some Los Lobos. Check out their version of the Grateful Dead’s “Bertha”. Good stuff.

  74. Dennis Westrick

Spotting the Braves 5 runs is like the Bengals spotting the KC Chiefs 2 touchdowns! Maybe Dream Weaver wasn’t warmed up?

  75. Melvin

Mariot pitched six innings of no run ball down in AAA. Second good start in a row. I believe eight innings last time.

  76. Mark Moore

    What was THAT????

    Bang it, Joey!!!!

  77. JB

Would have been cool if that ball Joey hit landed in the lawn chair

  78. Harry Stoner

Tonight shows the need for the long ball to offset the weak SP.

If JV isn’t going to provide it, then it’s CES.

    Crystal clear.

  79. JA

I don’t know the final result of the game, but I guess the people at the GABP is having too much fun today

  80. JB

Your number one prospect isn’t as good as our number one prospect

  81. Mark Moore

Cowboy just gave the PERFECT analogy 😀

“This is kind of like a golf game where you’re 4 holes in and you spotted the other guy 5 strokes.”

  82. Harry Stoner

Oops…well even if JV is providing….;-)

  83. Daytonnati

I think the days of “Clete’ing” might be over?

    • Mark Moore

Yeah … it would really take a slaughter to make that happen. And probably pretty late in the game.

  84. Dennis Westrick

OK, we’re back to even! It’s a bullpen game going forward! Bell must be ecstatic!

  85. Melvin

The youngest and the oldest on the team getting it done tonight so far. Pretty cool. 🙂

  86. old-school

Can we all agree Luke weaver is DFA and cant start again?

    • Daytonnati

82 pitches, 10 outs. I’m good with setting him free.

    • Mark Moore

Yeah, I’m fine with that. We need a spot for Ashcraft anyway.

  87. Melvin

Barrero not playing in either one of the AAA games today. Trade in the works?

    • Soto

Interesting. Either that or he is hurt.

  88. Soto

Nice play by Steer. Dude is proving that he must be in the lineup somewhere. He will adapt to left field just fine. He’s a ballplayer.

  89. CI3J

I believe the proper term for this game is “slugfest”.

  90. Soto

Atlanta has ridiculous team power. It just makes winning games so much easier when you hit a lot of homeruns. The Reds need to add CES if we want to consistently compete with the big boys.

    • Mark Moore

They mash, that’s for sure. One of only 3 teams to have a +100 run differential.

    • Dennis Westrick

No truer words have been spoken tonight! We’re fighting with BB guns and Atlanta has 155mm howitzers!

    • Roger Garrett

Especially in GABP.They start guys that all of them could hit 20 easily and 4 or 5 may hit 35 or more.If they get some starters back they could bury some really good teams in the East. They are that good.No they are really really good.

  91. Melvin

I thinks that’s one play where a good defensive second baseman would have had that ball.

    • Mark Moore

Probably so. Didn’t ultimately cost us more and it was pretty deep in the hole, but if you flip the script, I think Ozzie snags that.

  92. Mark Moore

    MattyMc on … another HBP

Time for India to yank one out.

    • Mark Moore

Or take another HBP and leave it to EDLC 😮

  93. Dennis Westrick

Time to get back to work on offense! Just a travesty that we had to start in a 5 run hole! Weaver needs to be DFA’d following today’s game!

  94. Melvin

    Alright! We’ll take those plunkers!

  95. Melvin

Wohoo! RBI single by De La Cruz. 🙂

  96. Mark Moore

Break the wall, break the bat, whatever works when you’re 3-for-3.

Needs a triple for the cycle. He’s one guy that could pull it off.

  97. Mark Moore

Yet another over-slide … but the results worked.

  98. Mark Moore

Time for Joey to do what Employee #19 does.

  99. Mark Moore

OH MY FREAKING WORD!!!! HE COMPLETELY CRUSHED IT!!!

  100. Melvin

OH MY GOODNESS!!!! VOTTO!!! THREE RUN HOMER!!!

    • Melvin

Oldest and youngest getting it done again that inning. 🙂

      • Dennis Westrick

It’s like watching an episode of Sanford & Son!

  101. Soto

Can everyone stop doubting Mr. Votto. Just enjoy!

    • Mark Moore

It appears he’s healed up and then some. He worked that count and made ’em pay BIG TIME.

  102. Slicc50

Gosh this is fun! Wonder if that Votto guy will hurt the team????

  103. LarkinPhillips

This is the most fun I’ve had watching a Reds team ever! Thirty plus years.

    • Soto

I’m with. Most fun since wire to wire for sure.

      • Mark Moore

        +50,000

And that’s a bunch of points to hand out in June 😛

      • Melvin

It’s MORE fun because it’s totally unexpected. Miracle.

  104. Tom Reeves

Joey’s going to make the Reds consider that option for next year, isn’t he?

  105. JB

Joey said last year he loved playing with the kids. He must really love it this year.

  106. VaRedsFan

Sold out show…getting their money’s worth.
    I’m there next Friday.
Give me half the excitement of this one

  107. Old-school

Votto is a decent 6 hole hitter.

    • JB

So ? Are you now ready to get on that playoff bandwagon? You said you would rethink it when they got to .500

      • old-school

        Yes JB
        Add me on baby!
Im going to the game tomorrow!

      • Melvin

Make room for me. I’m getting on. Playoffs here we come! 🙂

  108. JB

Hey Melvin, Joey is still driving the Bandwagon!

    • Melvin

Friedl just wants to know if he’s still L…What’s that word again?

  109. VaRedsFan

Keep adding on…9 runs won’t win this one.

  110. Dennis Westrick

Long way from over, but, it’s been fun so far! Three (3) field goals! Nice!

    • CI3J

The Falcons got a touchdown, though. Can’t count them out just yet.

  111. Melvin

Sure would be nice to have Chapman in a game like this tonight.

    • MBS

Lol, keep banging that drum. It’d make this pen that much stronger.

      • Melvin

Having TWO stoppers against a Braves team like this could make all the difference.

  112. Roger Garrett

Need a clean inning after taking the lead then the top of the order leads off.

  113. Mark Moore

DD#1 is with us and noticed Harris II at bat. She recognized him from when she worked for the Rome (GA) Braves.

  114. JB

If the Reds players pulled their pants up to below the knees like McLain, the uniforms would look a million times better.

    • Mark Moore

The only thing I dislike more than the long pants is the shorts the White Sox wore that one season.

    • VaRedsFan

Mclain hikes his up over the knee…a’ la Hunter Pence.

  115. Votto4life

Another bad night for the Joey Bashers. But I am sure they will be sure to show up during his next 0 for 4 game.

    • JB

I’m very happy for him. He is going to be so happy when he gets to the playoffs this year.

    • Mario

Sure glad the haters didn’t make you turn.

  116. Melvin

Steer called him off like a LF should. 🙂

    • Mark Moore

I noticed that. He’s a very valuable player for our Reds.

  117. Dennis Westrick

And Gibaut just had to walk a batter with 2 outs and no one on base!

  118. Mark Moore

Winning this first game is worth a bunch in my book. Gives us a chance to split the next two for the series win and breaks their 8-game streak.

  119. Soto

Gibaut has been one of the unsung heroes of this team! Keep it up big guy!

  120. Soto

Time to play add on! Friedl doing what he does.

  121. Melvin

Way to move him over McLain. Got to get this run in now.

  122. CI3J

    Elly for the cycle!

First of many, many more to come!

    • Daytonnati

      “They smell like … victory”

  123. Mark Moore

    OH MY FREAKING WORD!!!!

15 games in and he’s hit for the cycle like the former #44.

I may not be able to sleep tonight.

And there’s still only one out 😮

    • Mark Moore

And we spotted them a 5-run lead.

I imagine for those of you on the Bally feed, Sadak’s head just exploded.

      • LarkinPhillips

As a Sadak basher, I don’t even mind him right now. It’s unbelievable to watch what is happening right now.

  124. Melvin

You have to wear #44 now if you want to hit for the cylce with the Reds. Eric Davis 1989. 🙂

      • Tom Reeves

I’d say Elly has earned the right to wear #44.

I never thought I’d see another baseball player play for the Reds as gifted as Eric Davis. Welp, Elly is more complete than Eric. We’ll be talking about this guy for the rest of our lives.

  125. Mark Moore

I do believe I’ll be buying a City Connect shirt … and maybe a hat.

  126. LT

I should have said offense can cover for 10 runs, not 6-8. Lesson learned 🙂

  127. LDS

I give them up for dead after the first inning, come back and EDLC has cycled? The Reds are ahead. What planet am I on? This is seriously Twilight Zone stuff. I always liked the Twilight Zone.

    • JB

Have you even watched the Reds in the past month? It’s never over.

      • LDS

Not much over the last 3 weeks after I temporarily unretired. But, they are getting fun again, for the first time in nearly 2 decades

    • Melvin

Don’t forget about Votto hitting two homers. 🙂

  128. JB

Sadak with a funny line- Reds baseball. This is what the College World Series is like every game.

    • Mark Moore

He’s not wrong. At that point, it’s a complete carnival atmosphere.

      • JB

Lol he also said this is video game baseball

  129. Mark Moore

I like that attempt … probably not well executed, but keep pressing the gas.

  130. CI3J

The record for most cycles in a career is, surprisingly, only 3 times.

I have a feeling Mr. De La Cruz will break that record in his career. Maybe even before he’s 25.

    • Mark Moore

He just might do that. It’s rarified air to breath to even get one in, let alone within your first 15 games in The Show.

    • VaRedsFan

      Yelich has vs. the Reds
      Or is it 3?

      • CI3J

Yelich does indeed have 3 against the Reds. 2 in 2018, and the 3rd one in 2022.

      • VaRedsFan

        OK…final answer…it’s 3…all vs. Reds

      • JB

Didn’t he get both in the same series?

  131. Mark Moore

So the plan is Farmer to Sims to Diaz I’m assuming. Unless we pile on more and only need the young mop-up crew.

    • Melvin

He says, “Who says I can’t play outfield? I’ll show you”. 🙂

    • JayTheRed

Steer helps this team so much. Quality at bats every time. and such a team player. I have to say his defense is very solid too.

  132. Mark Moore

Anyone who had Steer making that kind of a catch in LF (the one before Ozuna) please raise your hand.

Mine is decidedly DOWN. The kid is a stud.

  133. LT

When you hit for cycle I guess you are free to do anything including trying to steal home. What a magical night for Cincinnati Reds nation

    • VaRedsFan

It was definitely a Steph Curry heat check attempt.

  134. Indy Red Man

    Both teams 5+ runs +180
Big bet on Reds +2.5 when it was 5-2

Elly most talented player I’ve ever seen and Joey is cementing HOF

Please quit throwing Fraley in trades please. Jake & India are the leaders imo

    • JB

Who is throwing Fraley in trades? Old School said the same earlier. Did I miss something?

      • VaRedsFan

There are several that want Fraley and India in trades. I try to snuff them out, but they are relentless box score watchers.

      • JB

This is why we can’t have nice things.

    • Old-school

Jake and India are leaders for sure! Don’t trade either

    • JayTheRed

I agree we keep Frailey and India. Bad idea to get rid of their leadership and drive have this team rolling along.

  135. Mark Moore

Nice play by Fraley. Now let’s get the batter and sit the Bravos down.

    • JB

You know his outfield play has gotten better. It’s not Freidl ” legit” defense( you catch that Melvin?), But it’s serviceable.

  136. Mark Moore

HUGE K there by Farmer. Just HUGE!!!

  137. Dennis Westrick

Why do the Reds relief pitchers seem to struggle with 2 outs and nobody on base?

  138. Kevin H

    WoW

Been listening on radio and well just wow

  139. Steve Schoenbaechler

I don’t like the CC unis that much. If they had more color to them, some more red and white, alright. But, if you aren’t looking right, you may see all black.

As well as, I can’t help thinking, on a hot summer day, that’s the last thing the players would like to be wearing.

    • JB

Like I said earlier, pull the pant legs up to the knee like McLains. Then they look good.

  140. SlippinJimmy

Random question: is Anne Sabo still with us? Haven’t seen her in a while.

    • VaRedsFan

She was on the pregame with Welsh

      • SlippinJimmy

Oh lol thanks, my bad. I usually tune in right before first pitch.

      • Daytonnati

I believe that was Katherine Nero, a local broadcaster.

      • Mark Moore

Thanks, Daytonatti. I didn’t think that looked like Annie.

      • VaRedsFan

        Thanks….
Heard a female voice and just assumed.

  141. Melvin

Can you imagine this lineup tonight if you put Stephenson at catcher and CES at DH? Wow.

    • JB

CES was in a little slump there. 1 for his last 17 before that 2 run single. It can’t be easy hitting in front of Reynolds. He probably isnt getting much to hit.

      • Melvin

MIght be bored because he can’t do anything to get up to the bigs.

    • Tom Reeves

I was thinking Steer should be at 1B, Votto DH, and CES in the OF but Steer and Votto have destroyed that thinking – happily

I still want to see CES.

  142. Steve Schoenbaechler

This ump doesn’t seem to be giving many of those “on the line” strikes tonight.

    • Mark Moore

Nope. He’s been mostly consistent. A little more generous with Joey to start than with others.

      • Steve Schoenbaechler

I didn’t say he wasn’t consistent. He just wasn’t seeming to give those strikes that were borderline.

  143. VaRedsFan

Ty went to the India school of check swings.
Whip the bat back….never leave it there..
Someone needs to show them Brandon Phillips technique…he was a master.

  144. Mark Moore

Keep turning over our lineup and sitting them down.

I’m beginning to feel it. I just bought a City Connect t-shirt and hat.

    • Daytonnati

I think you may have jinxed this, Mark.

  145. Mark Moore

Solo blast there … grooved it just a bit.

  146. LT

This game has a Hr derby feel to it does it not?

  147. CI3J

7 HRs hit in this game so far.

    SLUG

    FEST

  148. Old-school

    Acuna solo Hr doesn’t matter

    Move on

  149. JayTheRed

I am little behind but catching up quickly on MLB I am in the 6th inning and OMG.. EDLC is huge the Cycle. Has not happened since Eric Davis in 1989. My heart is cheering, I can’t stop smling.

Oh and the old guy Votto has 2 Home Runs in this game come on …. Reds are on Fire. Everyone on the team is helping out.

    • Mark Moore

It’s a treat tonight. Just pure joy to watch this team.

  150. Melvin

This is a battle of the best right now.

  151. Dennis Westrick

Can you imagine how many HRs the Braves would hit if GABP was their home field?

    • JayTheRed

Shhh…. I don’t want to see any more home runs from Atlanta.

  152. Kevin H

I think it is safe to say Votto has his power back.

  153. Mark Moore

Focus, focus, focus … contain them to that one run. Riley is one tough cookie.

  154. LarkinPhillips

If this is a save situation and Diaz comes in, I hope they play his entrance from the BP with his matador song. It will be wild with the packed stadium tonight.

  155. Kevin H

    11-9, What a baseball game… man…

  156. Melvin

Sure would be nice to have Chapman here right about now. 😉 lol

  157. Dennis Westrick

Braves are not going down without a fight!

  158. Mark Moore

Quit nibbling, Sims! Then you offer up cement mixers like that one!

  159. Tom Reeves

    Sims doesn’t have it tonight.

  160. Dennis Westrick

Good grief Sims! Seriously? Three (3) solo HRs!

    • JB

That’s why you don’t walk people. Solo shots don’t hurt as much

  161. LT

Offense, let’s give Diaz a little more cushion here.

  162. Mark Moore

    Aaaaannddd … EXHALE.

    Need to add on here.

  163. JB

MAN THIS IS CRAZY!! AND YES IM YELLING! CRAZY GAME.

    • Melvin

Dennis is saying, “Who needs BP medicine now JB”? hahaha

  164. Dennis Westrick

Just can’t have an easy win can we!

  165. SlippinJimmy

Hopefully Diaz has at least been getting his 8 hours of sleep every night… Or 10… or 12…

  166. Mark Moore

Braves showing why they lead the NLE and are among the best in baseball. Still the 3rd highest run differential by a wide margin.

Time to end their 8-game streak with a little more magic from the boys.

  167. Soto

What a night. We have to find a way to finish this one off. Go Reds!

  168. LT

Beat the best to be the best. It cannot be any more true. Atlanta is one heck of a team but the Reds are up to the challenge. Let’s win this thing

  169. Kevin H

Really has been a fun game. Two good teams battling

  170. Amarillo

This is one of the greatest games I have ever watched.

  171. Mark Moore

Nuts … was hoping he’s find a gap and shoot MattyMc around the bases.

  172. JB

Fraley doesn’t get cheated on his swings.

  173. Mark Moore

OK, Diaz … this is what you live for. Our streak depends on your streak. So streak away!

      • Dennis Westrick

I remember streaking! Went to Western Kentucky University in the early ’70’s!

  174. Mark Moore

Now we need a pair of bike helmets to finish this thing.

  175. Mark Moore

12 IN A ROW!!! AND 21ST SAVE FOR DIAZ!!!

    Can Sadak even speak now?

  176. JayTheRed

I’m at the bottom of the 8th The Braves just almost gave me a heart attack. Very unusual pitching by Sims tonight. Guys are going to have rough outings.

    • JayTheRed

Woot woot! !2 IN A ROW!!!!!!! This Team rocks it.

  177. Melvin

Yepper!!!! Good stretch by Votto! Double play to end it! 12 IN A ROW!!!!!

  178. Dewey Roberts

Wow! Oh, wow! What a victory for these young Reds!

  179. JB

So where is the guy who said the Braves will sweep and score over 30 runs?

  180. Mark Moore

Gotta be EDLC with Day. You knew that.

    • Mark Moore

Gives the Eric Davis hat tip and tells the fans they are the best.

  181. LDS

As they said in the old movie “The Great Northfield Minnesota Raid” – “ain’t that a wonderment”

    • Mark Moore

      Ain’t it though?
      😮 😀 😉 😛

  182. Matt McWax

    Biggest win of the year!

Lots of highlights, lots to think about and learn from. The team can get better and that’s saying something during a 12 game streak. To get a win on a Weaver start against the Braves, it’s confirmation that the Reds can’t be counted out.

    • Tom Reeves

To me this is the biggest win since the 1994 season.

  183. CI3J

Reds are only 1.5 games away from having the 3rd best record in the NL, and the 6th best record in MLB.

    That’s something.

  184. Dennis Westrick

I’m speechless! Spot the Braves a 5-0 lead, come back and lead 11-7 and hang on to win 11-10! Storybook stuff! “The Streak” is still alive!

    • Mark Moore

Diaz on his own streak as well. It is storybook quality indeed.

  185. William

GM: Consider a Chapman trade. The Reds need a good starter as well. Thanks for helping build this team. Go Reds!

  186. Mark Moore

Mocking the Bravos war chant … got to love that

    • JayTheRed

That was my favorite part of the post-game show. I was laughing so hard hearing that.

  187. MCT

There are a LOT of salty Braves fans on twitter right now. I normally don’t mind Atlanta and their fans, but wow the cope is real and not a good look.

I guess the Reds finally beat a “real team”.

    • Mark Moore

After spotting them 5 in the first. Takes a real team to do that.
