After an 8-1 road trip and currently riding an eight game winning streak, the Cincinnati Reds (37-35) return home to Great American Ball Park Monday night to face a Colorado Rockies (29-45) team that has lost five straight games and is buried in the basement of the NL West division. First pitch is at 7:10 EDT, pending weather.

Austin Gomber

With a 7.29 ERA and a 6.34 FIP, 29-year-old Austin Gomber has not had a great season for the Rockies. However, when you dive into his splits, it’s clear that he’s a much better pitcher away from Coors Field. In 37.1 innings at home, he has a 9.40 ERA and has allowed 12 home runs. Away from Coors Field, he has a 4.60 ERA in 29.1 innings. His most recent start came at Fenway on June 14, and while he took the loss, he did pitch a quality start, giving up only three runs in six innings and striking out five while walking only one.

Gomber is not a huge strikeout guy, with only 44 strikeouts in 66.2 innings. He also has gotten destroyed by left-handed hitters this season. Even in only 68 plate appearances, lefties are batting .390/.448/.712 against him, with a 1.160 OPS. It’s why my hope for tonight is this:

Brandon Williamson

It’s gotten worse for left-hander Brandon Williamson in his last three starts. In the month of June, he’s allowed 11 earned runs on 20 hits, including five home runs, in 17.1 innings. He had allowed eight runs in his first 14.1 innings in the big leagues through the month of May. He has cut down on the walks recently, only walking four, as compared to nine in the three starts he made in May.

The good news for Williamson is that the best start of his short major league career came in his debut against these Colorado Rockies at Coors Field. He pitched 5.2 innings, only giving up one run on two hits and striking out six.

News and Notes

#19 is back

The Reds activated Joey Votto from the IL and he will make his season debut at GABP tonight.

More Accolades for Reds Minor Leaguers

Final Thoughts

No words–I’m just going to leave you with this photo of Joey Votto with a giant smile on his face, because this is also how I feel about the return of #19.

Hey Mark & Melvin! I’m Back! The O2 tanks are filled, the BP meds have been restocked and the fridge has plenty of adult beverages! Let’s roll and keep the winning streak going against the Rockies!

    Also, welcome back Joey Votto!

    • Mark Moore

I’m here and waiting. Hoping the rain holds off and we can see Joey come back to a little magic. Just took a reading of 124/62 so I’ve got some margin.

Still some puzzling assignments today, but I’m thinking TJ is hurting a bit after that monster collision and India is at DH for the same reason. Would prefer to see Senzel and the 14-year-old flipped, but that’s just me.

      • Oldtimer

Steer is playing OF for only the 6th time since his pro career (MiLB) started in 2017. Senzel has played RF but not very often.

      • Melvin

Steer is going to have to learn to play the outfield more often. He’s happy with that he says.

    • Melvin

Alright. Just remember. DEEP BREATHS. 🙂

      • Mike Adams

To your comment about Steer playing the outfield: his attitude is probably whatever I have to do play and stay in the Show.

      • Melvin

Yes Mike Adams. He’s a good man to have on your team.

  2. 2020ball

Anyone else wanna write off Votto before he even takes an AB?

    • LDS

I won’t say write him off. But, I will say people here have excessively elevated expectations of his performance.

      • Harry Stoner

I haven’t seen, read or heard anything to suggest any sort of such expectations here.

Maybe on Twitter or Goober or Mettwurst fan sites?

The Eeyores are out in force, though.

Folks are pulling, hoping for an “Albert the Great” type last rodeo.

I wouldn’t even call that optimism.

A Jerry Jeff Walker song in there somewhere.

      • Melvin

I’ll admit it. Sometimes it’s fun to have excessively elevated expectations. 🙂 We’re already witnessing a miracle in wins and losses.

    • JayTheRed

Not me … The guy might not be the player he once was but I think he will do everything in his power to help this team win.

      • Mike Adams

        I agree.
I also hope he hits everything off the wall or over the fence so he doesn’t have to run hard. He lumbered along in that video of his double with the Bats.

  3. RedsGettingBetter

Well, we hope Williamson can keep Rockies under 4 runs in about 5-6 frames that it’s just his ERA says in order to have the game on the line whether the Reds offense continues to rake as the last games and they could be able to hit Gomber hard
How is the weather at GABP right now?

  4. Indy Red Man

Saw Connor Phillips highlights on Twitter. His breaking stuff falls off the table! Idk about this weekend w/Atlanta, but get’em up here.

Something tells me tonight Elly golfs a breaking ball to left for #2

  5. Tim

Phillips is having similar success as Abbot did. It would be nice to bring him up with similar results. Welcome back Joey. Help this team win a championship on your way to retirement.

    • Mike Adams

yeah, if Mike Leake could go straight from college ball to MLB why not try that with others to solve the starter problem?

  6. Moon

And Hunter Greene to the 15 day IL. That means the entire 5 man pitching rotation the Reds started the year with are not pitching right now….

    • Doc

Isn’t this HG’s second IL trip this year?

  7. west larry

Greene to the 15 day ir. Herget dfa’d,

    • west larry

Greene to the 15 day IL with hip soreness.

      • Mike Adams

See my reply to Tim a couple comments back

  8. CI3J

Seems like when Ashcraft comes back on Friday, Weaver will be released.

It also seems like the Reds are trying their best to use smoke and mirrors to make it to the ASB before really dealing with the roster crunch.

    • Harry Stoner

You don’t think they’d try Weaver in the BP first?

Wasn’t that what part of what they originally acquired him for?

      • CI3J

I kind of doubt it. Who would he replace?

      • Harry Stoner

        Cruz?

Or if they go with a shorter rotation, they could get creative.

IDK, hard to see them jettisoning him during a pitching crunch.

Maybe bumble along with him until Phillips is ready.

Beats trading Marte for an innings nibbler.

  9. Harry Stoner

I’d be more concerned about a team letdown over the HG injury News than any bad juju from Votto “taking ABs from some Young Turk”.

I figured Reds’ fans would be pulling to see him don that goofy Viking hat and then struggle to pull it off his big head.

A good time for Williamson to step up.

    • LDS

Give him his send off but don’t play him everyday.

      • ChrisinVenice

How about seeing how he plays?

      • LDS

We have actually. Maybe he’ll do well but I’m not betting the farm. The man is almost 40, just had major surgery, and didn’t hit AAA pitching. Maybe he turns it around. Maybe he doesn’t. But pretending he’s going to play like he did in 2017 or even 2021 against RH’ers, is IMO wish

    • Hanawi

Not really new injury for Greene, though. They already skipped him once through the rotation. And he was clearly not right during that last start.

      • Harry Stoner

So, you’re right, not coming as a surprise.

In which case, let the good times roll.

  10. Mark Moore

Really hope the Rocks are completely off their game tonight and that Joey can bang one. I’d prefer him somewhere other than 1B (pushing Steer to LF), but as a long-time fan I’ll roll with whatever gets thrown my way. Hoping the revers splits on the Rocks pitcher hold true tonight.

Of we go for the homestand.

    • Mark Moore

Pretty sparse crowd … and I’m thinking that’s not just because of the weather.

  11. Indy Red Man

Michael Wacha 18-4 last 1.5 seasons w/Boston and SD. Always liked the movement on his pitches

That’s the kind of guy Krall needs to be searching for. Maybe Brady Singer from KC needs a reset?

    • Mark Moore

A whole lot of teams will be searching for starters. That’s gonna drive up the asking price. Those that maybe need a reset could be good candidates.

      • Harry Stoner

Another Sonny Gray / Sanmartin type deal would be welcome.

  12. Indy Red Man

Not going for the fences tonight, just a winner hopefully:

Same game parlay +264 with boost

    Williamson 5+ hits allowed
    McLain 1+ hit
    Reds Over 4.5

    • VaRedsFan

I don’t hate it…I got MMC in a hit parlay.

  13. Ron S

Joey may not have the same stroke but his eye should keep his opb okay. Will Marty B still comp!ain about Votto drawing walks ?

    • Tom Reeves

      At Joey’s age, it’s called drawing walkers…

  14. Hanawi

Good start from Williamson. Maybe having already had success against the Rockies gives him a bit more confidence in his pitches today.

  15. Mark Moore

Nice first inning from Williamson. 5 or 6 like that and it gives us a chance.

The “splash down” in the beer was funny. The guy drinking it with the ball in it was kind of gross. 😛

  16. Ted Alfred

I’m really encouraged by that first inning by Williamson. I think that’s the best he’s thrown the ball all year…his fastball is hitting 94-95 regularly which is 2 to 3 mph faster than normal and he was locating it better and throwing it more often…good news.

  17. Mark Moore

He got enough of that one!! Nice stroke, Newman.

    • greenmtred

Homer from leadoff. Next Ricky Henderson?

  18. Mark Moore

    ELDC slides and he’s safe.

But we’re up to start the game. That’s a good thing.

  19. Mark Moore

We’ll take that inning from Williamson. Gave it up to their best hitter. Senzel’s throw was close enough to keep him at 2nd.

    Almost Joey Time!!

  20. Old-school

Im not trading any assets other than lottery tickets in high A. Most of the young guys have stepped up. Let Williamson and Lively have a few more starts. Williamson throwing strikes and mixing pitches.

  21. Dennis Westrick

Anybody know why Blackmon is not in the lineup for the Rockies tonight?

      • Dennis Westrick

Thanks! He was a perennial Reds killer!

    • Will the Red

I believe he’s got a broken hand. Glad Votto is back, and very interesting to see how the roster and lineup is juggled by Bell to get enough of the young guys ABs. Also, still wondering if anyone knows why they didn’t try EDLC in center field? Seems like he’d be about the best one we’ve had out there since at least Neon Deion, if not Eric Davis.

  22. Mark Moore

Didn’t whiff. Went with the pitch. I’m OK with that.

  23. Old-school

Steer and Votto ripped balls. Right at cf

  24. Old-school

    Senzel against lefties is absurd

    ‘That was a rocket

    • Mark Moore

Out in most parks. Wall banger in a couple more.

  25. SteveAReno

Up first to plate is Kevin Newman, and he’s busting the ball for a Home Run Reds fans!
The Nasties here will say trade him because he should have waited until there were two or three runners on base.

    • Tom Reeves

I don’t understand why Newman didn’t score three runs on us own right there. He really needs to step it up!

      I blame Bell!

      • Melvin

I’m glad you recognize that. Most wouldn’t understand. hahaha

  26. MBS

The 2 utility guys who specialize in smashing LHP, just smashed LHP!!!

  27. Dennis Westrick

Happy for Nick! Let’s keep scoring!

  28. Nelson Arblaster

Newman and Senzel hitting homers just makes it even harder for the front office to decide who they will drop. Who makes way for CES?

  29. Mark Moore

Welcome to the show, Kaiser 😀

  30. Mark Moore

Pretty efficient 3 innings. Inducing some weak stuff from their better hitters. Maybe we can ride him for 6 innings.

  31. Mark Moore

Stewie trying to get in on the Viking fest … just missed it a little.

  32. Ted Alfred

I noticed Sadak is talking about Williamson’s stuff being better tonight than it has been all year and I agree. If we get this version of Williamson going forward he’ll stick in the Reds rotation all year. He’s using the fastball more and with better velocity and hitting his spots, which is setting up a nice change & cutter, not to mention the occasional big hook. If this is his new version fastball we good.

  33. David

So, Hunter Greene on the DL, TJ Friedl banged up from the collision yesterday (will be back tomorrow, or Wednesday?), Joey Votto back (he’s back!), and the Reds will likely need another starter (hello Graham Ashcraft).

    It will all work out…somehow.

    • Mark Moore

Pretty much sums it up. India is probably ailing a bit as well and HDTBell is using the DH to give him a break.

  34. Mark Moore

Let’s not let the wheels come off here, guys.

That’s an example of why Senzel in RF isn’t the best choice.

    • Mark Moore

Cowboy and Thrall noting the ball was smoked and probably not catchable.

    • Roger Garrett

Yep and I am not sure but has Nick ever played right field?

      • Mark Moore

I recall one other game. Here at GABP if I’m not mistaken. Looked just a tad “lost” that time as well. It’s completely different from CF or LF. That’s why I would have preferred to swap him and Stewie tonight.

  35. Mark Moore

Nice throw by TySteve … very close.

  36. Dennis Westrick

Gonna need more than 2 runs! Need to pick it up!

    • Mark Moore

India is trying. Flirting as Thrall put it.

  37. Mario

before the HR, Senzel had a lower OPS than Votto had in his injury plagued severely down year in 2022.

  38. Dennis Westrick

Williamson 4 innings, 71 pitches! Yikes! Good news is he’s only allowed one (1) run! Glad the bullpen is rested!

  39. Harry Stoner

    Ooh.
    Gruesome AB for EDLC.
I hope he gets 3 more tonight.

  40. Dennis Westrick

Too many strikeouts by Reds hitters so far tonight! Need to make contact, put the ball in play and see what happens!

  41. Mark Moore

    Wait … WHAT????

    Monster BANG!!

  42. Bet on Red

BUT BUT BUT>>>> its like he never left

    • Mark Moore

I’ve missed you posting that, BoR. I really have.

  43. Mark Moore

Curtain call with the Viking gear … that’s a big welcome home. 😀

  44. greenmtred

Joey! You can’t make this kind of stuff up. Well..you can, but nobody would believe it.

  45. Roger Garrett

Lets get a crooked number this at bat and get Williamson another inning with some wiggle room and let the pen close this thing out.

    • Mark Moore

Nothing tough at 1B yet tonight, so that helps. But the solid stroke for both AB’s speaks for itself.

      • JB

I highly doubt he will take at bats away from Steer. The Reds I hope aren’t that dumb.

      • Mark Moore

It’s not taking AB’s from him. It’s the downgrade at 1B that concerns me most. So I’m hoping we see him plenty at DH and that his stroke is truly back.

  46. Melvin

Hahaha!!! HR against a lefty. Vottoooooo!!!!!!!! :D…viking Votto.

  47. Dennis Westrick

Outstanding 5th inning for Williamson! Can we get one more?

  48. Beaufort Red

As of now, I humbly eat crow. With a beer of course!

    • Melvin

Might try some A1 sauce. It helps me when I eat crow. 🙂

      • Harry Stoner

Beaufort….take it from a guy who’s eaten plenty of crow here….some Tabasco or a nice hot sauce to go with that and your beer.

  49. Mark Moore

Chatting up Benson … providing some veteran knowledge. I like to see that.

  50. Soto

Never bet against Votto! He is one of the all-time great Reds. The man can hit. Hope he’s healthy and has two more great years left.

  51. Mark Moore

Shaking my head at the Chumpire’s zone. Seems to be in a state of flux. Inconsistency is the thing I hate the most from these guys.

  52. Mario

I’m not going to say I told you so yet. He’ll have some good and bad moments like any player especially late 30’s. What a cool moment. Almost like Bench night 1983.

  53. Mark Moore

If you caught the pre-game, Votto going yard was the featured parlay.

    • David

He hit the ball hard both times tonight. A hard out to CF, and the homer.

So, my medical diagnosis is that his left shoulder seems to have healed pretty well. It took some time, which MANY here predicted. This was a major surgery, and Joey is 39 years old.
I am glad Joey is back, and hope he has a lot of big nights in him this last season.

      • Melvin

Appreciate your diagnosis there Doctor. 🙂

    • Mario

Bingo!! I was Michael for a while after my late great friend but for a while, there seemed to be a lot of Michael’s on RLN. I’ll have to break out my ECU shirt for Michael.

  54. Mike Adams

I got my wish further back in the comments. Time to buy a powerball ticket.

  55. Jim t

Brewers losing 4_0 and pirates losing 3-0.

  56. Dennis Westrick

Short leash for Williamson please! Hate to dip into the bullpen so early but need to protect this slim lead!

    • Dennis Westrick

And there it is as Farmer gets the call!

  57. Soto

Really good outing from Williamson. Nice work young man.

  58. Reddawg2012

Yet another starting pitcher who can’t get passed the 5th inning. The entire bullpen is going to be on the IL by August 1.

    • Hanawi

They really need a long man/6th starter to help eat innings, especially if they can find one with control into the future. I get the feeling that the Reds may see Williamson in that role eventually.

    • Soto

It’s now the norm across baseball. The game has changed. The Reds need to invest in the bullpen. It’s the future of the game.

      • VaRedsFan

Correct, stop with the “our guys never go 7-8 innings.”
        Doesn’t happen,…..stop asking.

  59. SlippinJimmy

You know who’d be good in left field? A left fielder.

    Fire. David. Bell.

  60. Melvin

This ain’t good. Need to stop the bleeding. Great try by Steer there.

  61. Roger Garrett

Had to have one like this cause its just baseball.

      • Mark Moore

Nope. Haven’t even dug a hole yet. And we’ve got a pretty loaded bench.

  62. VaRedsFan

How many times are the Reds RF’ers going to throw to third base with no chance of getting an out, before Bell does (not says) something?

    • Mark Moore

Given we have a 3B/CF/LF playing there tonight, I’m afraid we may see it a couple more times.

      • VaRedsFan

Hopkins, Benson and India have done it too.

    • Melvin

They’ve been watching Aquino too much. They just can’t do it like he could. 🙂

  63. Mark Moore

Looks like Farmer isn’t “on” tonight. I’ll take back my criticism of Gibault based on what I’m watching. I think our BP is just fatigued.

  64. JB

Buck doesn’t have it tonight. It was bound to happen. The dude has been lights out since last year. Bell needs to pull him.

  65. Mark Moore

That should help with the confidence. A couple bike helmets would be very welcome here.

  66. old-school

Farmer’s like screw it. Im throwing gas..hit it.

  67. JB

Buck days screw it. This is my fast ball. What are you going to do about it.

  68. Old-school

I really dont want to watch Moose in a no lose situation.

  69. Mark Moore

I like the move to counter 4M with Young. Farmer buckled down there, but even if they don’t bat 4M (and it looks like they won’t) we’ve made them burn some bench bats.

    • Mark Moore

Apparently Bud Black thinks 4M will work it. I’m hoping he’s the 4M we all got used to seeing.

But Young is gonna have to throw some strikes.

  70. Dennis Westrick

What happened to the strike zone?

    • Mark Moore

Chumpire has gotten rather inconsistent … are we surprised? 😮

  71. JB

Call me weird but I like to pitch to contact with the bases loaded. Nibbling won’t get it done . Make Moose swing.

    • Mark Moore

OK, you’re weird … but then so am I because I tend to agree.

  72. Mark Moore

Nope … not how you want to draw that up. The early balls way out of the zone hurt quite a bit.

  73. Soto

That stinks but it could have been worse. 4 runs isn’t probably going to win this game anyway.

  74. Dennis Westrick

Well, we’ve been here before! Gotta go to work and score, get the lead back and get to Diaz if he’s available tonight!

    OH! AND I HATE WALKS!

  75. VaRedsFan

Young just seems better with bases empty.
Seems to struggle with guys on.
I’m sure there are stats to prove me wrong.

    • Dennis Westrick

Could be pitching from the stretch versus a full windup!

    • Mark Moore

He started by nibbling (if you can call 2′ outside nibbling) and that set a bad tone for the AB with 4M.

  76. JB

Not bad by Williamson. Gave up three, two scored off of Buck. Only his 7th major league start. Don’t know many Rookie pitchers who come out and just start to dominate. I think he is far from “Garbage” .

    • Dennis Westrick

He is definitely NOT garbage! He left the game with the Reds leading! He will get better with each start!

  77. Dennis Westrick

Six (6) SOs by Reds batters! Not good!

    • JayTheRed

That play gave me a smile. So glad he is gone.

  78. Mark Moore

Put a glove on his flipper and what do you get? 😀

  79. JB

There’s the Moose I remember. Although they will give him a hit probably.

  80. SR

Todays game is going to indicate why the playoff % chance is so low. The bullpen, even with 8 arms cant throw 4 innings a game and be effective for an entire season. fatigue is setting in and an extra day off isn’t enough to recover from over usage over the course of a season.
A great athlete, even a big leaguer doesnt always mean they can play the outfield well. Big difference between shagging flies in BP and gametime. How a ball comes off the bat to right or left field. (Senzel was fooled) liners right at you(Steer). Where is the wall (both of them).Where to throw it (senzel). These players are not as interchangeable as Bell thinks they are without sacrificing defense and ultimately runs.

  81. Old-school

Can we just hit the ball to third base.

    BUNT now

    • Mark Moore

Like the softball game in the movie “Gung Ho” where 3B was manned by George Wendt.

    • Melvin

hahaha Just get it past the pitcher.

  82. Mark Moore

Not even close … you can’t wait on that hop, Mr. Moose. Not with ELDC running down the line.

  83. Melvin

Hahaha Moose had no chance against De La Cruz. SAFE!!!

  84. VaRedsFan

    Looked up Young stats:

    High leverage: .344/.3382/.719
    Medium leverage: .231/.268/.231
    Low leverage: .186/.286/.326

My eyes weren’t lying for a change.

      • Melvin

Fitting in just nicely thank you. 🙂

  85. Bet on Red

Got that shoulder healed up real good

    • Mark Moore

Completely went with that pitch and got it done.

  86. Mark Moore

    Joey FREAKING Votto!!!

Welcome back to do what we need you to do tonight.

    • Dennis Westrick

Would make a great script for a baseball movie!

  87. Kevin H

    VOTTO!!!!! 3 rbi’s a homerun and a single.

  88. Hanawi

From CTrent: Votto’s single was 108.7 mph. His three batted balls tonight — 104.4, 102 and 108.7

    • Melvin

I just wish he would hit one HARD. 🙂

    • Mark Moore

The out and single did NOT look that hard. WOW! 😮

  89. Votto4life

But, but he didn’t hit in Triple A lol

  90. Kevin H

Wow Crowd is wild chanting Votto Votto when he was up

  91. SlippinJimmy

Well, Votto has made a believer out of me. If he can keep this up, maybe he will be the perfect injection of experience into this team of youth.

  92. old-school

So who in the bullpen is going to calm this thing down to get 9 in a row?

  93. redbone

Great run right now but our starting pitching is in trouble. Better hope ashcraft comes back strong.

    • Dennis Westrick

It’s starting pitching in name only! I feel sorry for our bullpen!

  94. Dennis Westrick

I’m beginning to like this Cruz kid (the pitcher)!

  95. Mark Moore

I’m off the week of July 4th. I’m wondering if I should make a trip up to DC and watch a game or two when the boys are in town. I could do trains and automobiles and make 2 games easily with an overnight near the stadium (or some other Metro station).

    • Kevin H

I am thinking of July 1st its a Saturday

      • Mark Moore

4 games at the Nats starting on the 3rd. 6PM on the 3rd, 11AM on the 4th. That could possibly work. Traffic on I-95 would be a little calmer. Closest regional train station is in Fredericksburg.

      • VaRedsFan

I’m going to Cincy 6/30 and 7/1 games

    • Melvin

I’ve been there and used the Metro. It’s right there.

      • Mark Moore

I worked for a company in Chantilly and went to a couple of games. Metro is easy to navigate. I think I have a couple of the fare cards somewhere.

  96. Melvin

Good job pitching there. Need more runs. Got to win this game.

    • Dennis Westrick

More runs would certainly make this old man feel better!

  97. Dennis Westrick

13 pitches for Cruz! Any chance he comes out for the 8th?

    • Kevin H

I give up guessing what is going through Bell’s mind LOL.. Just when you think you know, well you don’t hahahha

      • Dennis Westrick

I would have better luck at a Vegas craps table than trying to figure out what’s in Bell’s head on any given night! He either is a genius or verylucky or both!

  98. Soto

Need some insurance runs. Let’s put this thing out of reach.

  99. JB

Reds bullpen is third in WAR. They have pitched 281 innings. But they aren’t even close to Tampa who has 308. Who has the best team in baseball. 19 teams have 260 and above. The Reds aren’t alone. So if the Reds bullpen is tired , then so aren’t a lot of teams.

    • Hanawi

I’m mostly concerned that they don’t overuse Diaz to the point where he gets injured. The first Houston game where Sims threw 8 pitches in the 8th and then they put in a tired Diaz to close was not great.

    • Soto

The Rays have figured it out. Dominant bullpens win games. Huge part of the Reds success this year. Hope it continues.

      • Melvin

That’s one reason why I think adding Chapman will make us division favorites.

      • VaRedsFan

Yessir…i’ve been saying it for a while.
First part to contending is a super bullpen.
        Orioles did it last year.
        Rays did it.
Royals did it when they won.
        Astros.
Every great team has a great pen.

  100. Melvin

It’s fun watching the players on this team play together especially the top of the lineup…especially when Friedl is part of it (nothing against Newman).

    • Mark Moore

But not starting it out that way.

Now we need a pair of bike helmets.

  101. GPod

i have watched, I think every at bat that Elly has had since that HR in his 2nd game, and i don’t think that he has seen a pitch above the belt since

  102. JB

Joey Votto said last year he loves playing with these young kids. He loves their enthusiasm and it’s hard not to get excited in the dugout with them. I think Joey will have a ball this year and will be a great mentor to these “kids”. I think Joey is a team player and will sit without a problem. I think he will do whatever needs to be done to get into the playoffs. I had Freidl driving the bandwagon but maybe Votto deserves the right to. He stuck it out ,instead of giving the go ahead and being traded. Red for life. Can’t get any better than that.

    • Mark Moore

I’m normally not a big believer in the whole “veteran presence” thing. But having watched Joey for this long and seeing his enthusiasm tonight, perhaps I’ll lay that aside for this season. He definitely knows the game. If he allows the infectious spirit of the young studs to motivate him as well, we may just catch some lightening in a bottle.

I’ve said it before. NLC is wide open for the taking. Why not us?

      • Mario

Joey seems so much different than earlier in his career. A few years ago, he seemed to lighten up, be a better teammate, better with the media. I didn’t get the sense he was well liked. Now it seems he is revered among his teammates.

  103. Steve Schoenbaechler

I don’t know about this. Bell looks like he’s trying to think again. Cruz had a clean inning. Why replace him?

Just like even though the left handed starter we were facing has worse stats against left handed bats, what does Bell do? Puts in our right handed bats.

    • Kevin H

You want him to be able to go back to back games if need be. Farmer over 25 pitches already done foe tomorrow.

My guess of course, however makes sense to me

    • Mark Moore

      Personal opinion only, but …

HDTBell wouldn’t manage for any other club in the majors. His family connection likely gives him a long leash. And, to his credit, we’ve seen some solid moves that resulted in wins so far this season.

Overall, the BP management still makes me shake my head often. Not sure if that will change. Nothing I can do about it anyway, right?

      • Kevin H

Agree Mark and liked I mentioned earlier trying to get used to Bell’s thinking is like banging my head lol

  104. old-school

    Arizona 7-1 on brewers
    Cubs blowing out pirates.

Cubs may be the team to watch . SP is very good.

    • Melvin

I still think the Brewers are our biggest thorn in the side.

      • Mark Moore

Counsel just seems to squeeze every drop out of whatever team he has.

      • JayTheRed

We play the Brewers 9 times in July… within like a little over a 2 week period. It’s going to be huge!

    • Mark Moore

Steer just helped him out with that take of 2nd.

  105. Mark Moore

I’m thinking Hand was headhunting just a bit there.

  106. Dennis Westrick

Why not let Sims close it out and give Diaz another day off?

  107. Melvin

Throw at Votto will you? Fight!!! 🙂

    • Melvin

Why are they pinch running for Votto. Are they trying to say he’s not fast? 😉

      • Kevin H

But but the veteran presence. Bell can’t manage him. But but

  108. David

Fraley up against a left handed pitcher.

Would you have him bunt here? Two men on, no one out.

Why not? Because he flails at lefties.

    • David

I guess not. Chases the first pitch.

    • Hanawi

He and Senzel would seemingly make a good rotation team in left field, but that does sometimes lend itself to bad late inning matchups if you burn the switch too soon.

To be clear, I was fine with Fraley PH earlier for Senzel as that was a big spot that could have broken it open.

  109. Mark Moore

Just float one out there deep enough, TySteve. Anything more is gravy.

  110. Mark Moore

Fraley got a HUGE jump. 12 SB’s on the year.

  111. Mark Moore

    Black makes the change mid-AB … 😮

  112. Mark Moore

It comes down to Diaz … I need to check and see where my meds are just in case 😛

    • Dennis Westrick

Got all my fingers AND toes crossed!

  113. VaRedsFan

Who could the Reds poach from the Rockies.
    Bard? meh
    Hand? meh
    Lawrence? Oh yes! nasty stuff.

  114. Mark Moore

Good defensive team in here now.

  115. Mark Moore

4M isn’t allowed to do that in GABP … at least I thought that used to be the rule.

  116. Melvin

Yuk! Moose looked like he barely had the wind to get to 3B.

  117. Mark Moore

If Steer wasn’t holding on 4M, that’s in his glove and we’ve got one out at least.

  118. Mark Moore

If you can’t get the speed, throw filthy stuff.

  119. Melvin

Wow. That was strike three from my view.

  120. Mark Moore

Goes to show good pitchers won’t let terrible Chumpires ruin their day.

  121. Soto

Man it’s nice having a great closer!

  122. Kevin H

9 in a row!!!! Votto drives in 3 runs. Home run and single. As well as a walk.

    • Melvin

Yeah it was a walk. Was thinking it was a HBP. It was close.

  123. Bet on Red

Will the reds be in first? we will see

  124. Mark Moore

9 straight on the back of Employee #19!!!

Looking like we get at least a day in 1st place.

  125. David

The Pirates are getting shellacked by the Cubs, and the Brewers are getting clobbered by the Arizona Diamondbacks (who are really pretty good this year!!!)

The Reds will be all alone in….First Place? Okay, who had that on their 2023 Season Bingo card?

    • Mark Moore

Not the PhilBob Monster … or me.

    • Melvin

Diaz probably has more saves than I thought the Reds would win in the first half for awhile there.

  126. Dennis Westrick

    This one belongs to Votto!

    • David

Home run and a two run single. Game winning RBI’s.

Joey Votto, Star of the game. Okay, take it away, Old Lefthander.

Joe Nuxhall would be having a ball tonight.

  127. Mark Moore

Joey talking directly to the fans during the Jim Day interview. Got to love it. He’s saying how much he’s wanted to wear the Viking gear. Praising the energy of the guys.

    • Mark Moore

Day asked him about “knowing he’d homer” and Joey clapped, and ducked it.

      What a class act.

  128. Steve Schoenbaechler

The last time the Reds won 10 in a row, Marty bet to have his head shaved.

How about India has his head shaved?

    • Mark Moore

It would grow back in about 2 days 😀

      • Dennis Westrick

Wish I had that problem! It’s a race whether my remaining hair is gonna fall out, turn grey or both!

    • Melvin

I’d settle for some of them shaving their beards. lol

  129. Dennis Westrick

Pie-Rats lost to the Cubbies! And, the Bernies are down 8-1 in the 7th!

  130. Votto4life

Looks like the Joey bashers checked out early tonight lol

  131. Dennis Westrick

Diaz 19 for 19 in saves I believe!

    • Mark Moore

I believe he’s 23 in a row going back to 2022. Longer than his out-for-the-season brother.

  132. Mark Moore

The Reds Live scene is raucous!! Not sure Brian and Chris will get a word in edgewise tonight.

  133. J

I’m sorry if this offends anyone, but I enjoyed this game quite a bit. Just felt I had to get that off my chest. It’s

    • Mark Moore

OK, J … just don’t let it happen again … unless we win again 😀

    • Melvin

Okay this time. just try to keep your emotions to yourself next time. 😉

  134. DW

Awesome to see Votto come back so strong. Have to give him a ton of credit for not rushing back.

    • Dennis Westrick

Hope it continues! This team can certainly use a seasoned veteran!

    • Mark Moore

His post game is all about performance. He knows that’s what is most important.

  135. Mark Moore

Joey’s locker room interview … he’s really lighting the place up and passing out the love for the team. Again said he love wearing the gear because it’s a team thing.

  136. Mark Moore

Now replaying Newman’s and Senzel’s HR’s. With Nick, the look on Gomber’s face just says “What the #######??”

  137. Mark Moore

OK, time for me to shut it down. I do have to work tomorrow. This one was especially sweet.

    Night, all!!

  138. Redsvol

Awesome to have Joey Votto back. Now if we can get EDLC reset and comfortable.

  139. Dennis Westrick

Snakes now up 9-1 over the Bernies in the 9th!

  140. Tim

I’m telling you that Votto will be a source of inspiration for the young guys. They will want to play with and for a future HOFer

  141. Protime

Believe it and live it! The Red tide is rolling….

  142. Will the Red

Such a fun game to watch, and a fun team to root for! Bell can be maddening at times, and how he managed in the 2020 wild card series… OOF. But this season, he seems to be doing just about everything right. Keep it up, Redlegs, and let’s get 10!
