The Cincinnati Reds head to Houston tonight to start a 3-game series with the Astros and former manager Dusty Baker. The Reds are currently just one game back of first place in the National League Central and could draw even tonight if things go right. Houston is in second place and is sitting at 39-30 and wondering if they can get back to the National League where they would have a healthy lead in the NL Central if they were there. Tonight’s first pitch is set for 8:10pm ET.

Andrew Abbott

The left-handed start has gotten out to a strong start to his big league career. In his two starts he hasn’t allowed a run yet, though he has tip-toed the line of handing out too many free passes.

With just two starts in the big leagues we’re showing his full season splits below. That’s going to include three starts from Double-A and seven more in Triple-A, so be sure to keep that in mind when looking at them. That said, he’s been very good against both lefties and righties this season. In a strange circumstance left-handed hitters have four home runs among their 10 hits against him this season.

J.P. France

The 28-year-old rookie has been a solid addition to the rotation for Houston this year. Called up in early May, he’s made seven starts and has posted a 3.54 ERA along the way.

In this big leagues this season, J.P. France has had big time reverse splits. Right-handed hitters had an .892 OPS against him and are solid across the board, if not better. Left-handed hitters have had almost no success at all against him as they’ve posted a .539 OPS with just one home run. That’s lower than the slugging percentage righties have.

Would love to catch a little lightning in a bottle and take the first game. Hoping Senzel has a monster game on his return.

Let’s kick ’em hard enough Dusty snaps a dozen toothpicks! 😀

    • Dennis Westrick

And swallows the remnants! Never was a Dusty fan, even when he was the Reds manager!

    • JayTheRed

I would take Dusty Baker over David Bell 1000 times over and over again.

  2. VaRedsFan

I guess the “they’re saving Barrero’s last option” theories are out the window. Never bought into that.

    • BK

The theory remains possible until Barrero spends 20 or more days in the minors.

      • Harry Stoner

I was one who was musing on the idea.

A still-in-development player like Benson came over from Cleveland with options which did seem to add to the value…he came back from AAA an improved hitter

I hope the same for Jose B.

He’s still only 25 and under control and I would contend has more trade value than Myers, for instance, and likely others.

Being out of options likely diminishes that.

      • VaRedsFan

I still think he can go down and find his way with the bat.
Jake and TJ did it last year.

  3. Moon

The Astros are 4-6 over their last 10 games. Cincinnati is 8-2. The Red are one game behind the Pirates and 1/2 game behind Milwaukee in the NL Central. The Pirates are playing the Brewers tonight. The Reds are 2.5 games behind SF for the last WC slot. The Giants have won 4 in a row to seize that spot. Hoping for another good start by Abbott tonight and the chance to steal game one in Houston. Just for fun Espn had an article by their baseball “experts” predicting world series teams, mvps etc. For NL rookie of the year they listed 12 possibilities. 4 of the 12 were Reds. Abbott, Steer, McClain, and EDLC. In other words, Reds have a lot of really good young talent on the team and it is getting noticed.

  4. Melvin

Interesting CES is in LF tonight after playing RF last night. I don’t what else the man can do to show he will do anything necessary and deserves to be in the majors with the Reds.

    • Redsvol

He needs to learn how to play better defense At third base. If that fails, then learn to play an outfield position or two. Can’t be just a first baseman/DH this year. It might be ok next year. But if he wants to play, then he needs other positions. Looks like they are doing that. He is young and he can handle it. Now is the time to figure it out – not at the major league level.

There are 5 other guys tearing the cover off the ball in the international league – and until recently all 5 were still at AAA. Pitching is horrible in the IL this year. But I do believe in CES because he’s hit across multiple leagues.

      • JB

CES isn’t playing third in the majors.

      • Melvin

I agree JB. Just being able to play there a little ups his value though.

      • old-school

        @ JB

        You are 100% correct.
The whole Jose barrero/Kevin Newman soap opera that played out from Opening Day till the arrival of Matt McLain proves that Krall has an organizational depth chart and just because 1 player is playing a position a level ahead of another, that doesnt mean he is the guy. The Reds are going to use the next couple of months to figure out the depth chart moving forward in 2024 while trying to win at the same time and trying to trade old assets and Senzel and Newman and Myers and Votto arent part of that depth chart in 2024. Barrero likely isnt either but he gets some reps in AAA to figure that out.

  5. Melvin

Votto grounds out hard to 2B. He hit a couple of balls just foul very hard. Looks like he’s seeing it well and the stroke looks good.

    • Dennis Westrick

If Votto returns, this team needs him to be 100% healthy and productive! I’m a huge Votto fan but do not want his imminent return to be a disruption and affect the current momentum of this team!

      • Redsvol

Joey Votto is a future hall of famer. If he is even 80% healthy, he will be an asset at the plate. I’m not convinced he can field though.

      • Beaufort Red

Future Hall of Famer isn’t a given. What he doesn’t need to do is give the doubters a lousy last season to justify their decision. Another discussion for another time.

    • old-school

We know some things about Votto and there are other things we dont know.

1.) When the Reds signed him to the 10 year deal, CW was his swing and plate discipline translated to his late 30’s even if the power eroded. I could see an RBI machine in the 5/6 hole if used correctly.
2.) He obliterated RH pitching in 2021 and that could still be very useful( Pujols crushed lefties his final old year).
3.) Hes terribly slow. Watch the video of his double last night.
      4.) Hes bad defensively.

See how the reds use him. If he plays every day hitting 4th including lefties….thats delusional. If he plays 40% 1b and hits 5/6 hole or so against righties and hits 30% DH some and rests against lefties, maybe it can work. Time will tell.

  6. Old-school

It was apparent in mid april the Reds had moved on from Jose Barrero as the franchise SS when he was sharing time with Newman. That looks like a good decision with McLain and EDLC so the Newman v Barrero wringing of hands and gnashing of teeth was wasted energy. Barrero is going to have to re=purpose himself as an OF or showcase his skills in AAA as a SS as a trade candidate. Fraley will be back Sunday and Hopkins will catch the Sunday flight to Louisville.

The real roster crunch starts when Votto and Myers get activated next week. Fairchild penciled in over Benson shows hes ahead of Benson on the depth chart and after that it’s not going to be the 3rd catcher or Senzel or Newman…..So Benson and Fairchild could be on the same plane ride.

Speaking of wasted energy….talking about India playing OF or 1b. Steer in LF and CES playing corner OF tells you India is mostly 2b. Perhaps he plays some 3b once a week but hes not materially moving positions in 2023.

    • Mark Moore

India is cemented at 2B with just MAYBE a 3B start or two thrown in. We know he’s in the DH rotation. The 1B/OF talk is nonsense, especially this season.

    • Harry Stoner

Barerro was the second of two big $$ international shortstop signings along with Alf Rod.

I think some of the ‘handwringing’ was associated with this.

That the Reds continued to draft and develop and trade for shortstops only made those investments seem more questionable.

Barrero tore up AAA pitching a couple years ago, but has struggled in MLB.

Worth repeating that he’s 25, which in today’s game, is still a pup.

      A pup out of options.

    • VaRedsFan

I still think Barrero can go down and find his way with the bat.
Jake and TJ did it last year.

    • DW

I hope Barrero gets traded to a team that keeps him at SS. I would love to see what he develops into there, good or bad.

  7. RedsGettingBetter

“The Reds are currently just one game back of first place in the National League Central and could draw even tonight if things go right.” I don’t think so because unfortunately Pirates are facing Brewers so if Pirates win they will stay at first place or , on the other side, if Brewers win they will be first. The Reds only could reach 2nd place if they win tonight no matter what happens between Pirates-Brewers.
This game is a huge challenge to Abbott, Let’s see what he can do…
I don’t know but I feel this first game seems to determine the rest of the series…

  8. T-money

So glad that we have Newman in the lineup and Elly on the bench. Play the kids…

  9. Mark Moore

I see Welch is back with Sadak which should me we get Cowboy on the WLW feed.

  10. JB

I never could stand the Astros when they were in the west with the Reds. JR Richard was about the only guy I liked. Sweep em.

    • Mark Moore

JR Richard was a demigod. I maintain he would have been a top-5 all time if he hadn’t had a stroke. Such an imposing figure.

    • Harry Stoner

      Agreed.

Remember how Mike Scott owned the Reds?

Jose Cruz was pretty likeable, though.

Current Asterisks are among the most hatable teams in MLB, and should remain so until the last of the trash-can-bangers is gone.

I live in TX and have sworn off going to the JuiceBox until the last of them are gone.

      • Old-school

        Harry

I like your posts usually…but “Jose Cruz was likeable?”

No way…he killed the reds before Jeff Bagwell.

Jose Cruuuuuuuzzzzzzz. No I hated that.

      • Harry Stoner

        Ha!

        I hear you.

I lived in Houston then and they had cheap tickets at the Dome in the LF bleacher seats. It was called the “Jose Cruz section”.

Kind of like the “Top 6” tickets at Riverfront when I lived in the C.

It was a riot out there, great Mexican food, easy access for the beer vendors. Families, lots of kids running around.

Cruz always interacted with the fans in Spanglish.

But he did beat up on the Reds….

    • Dennis Westrick

Got to see JR Richard pitch against Tom Seaver in Riverfront Stadium back in the day!
Reds won and the game was over in a little over 2 hours!

      • Mark Moore

That must have been epic. Tom Terrific is also in my top-5 all time.

      • Roger Garrett

Got to see Richard as well in the dome back in the 70’s.Small crowd and set behind 3rd base.Dude was huge and fastball sounded like a rifle going off when it hit the catcher’s glove.Reds won late after JR was gone.

    • Daytonnati

The first game I ever attended was at Crosley, the Reds vs. the Houston Colt .45s. I was ten. Reds won that day. I remember Bob Purkey getting the win and also hitting a home run. I think Vada homered as well.

  11. old-school

McLain looks like Zach Cozart on the routine plays at SS. If both Elly and McLain can play SS…that saves a roster spot as you dont need the 26 th man no hit backup SS/utility guy. I say play them both.

    • VaRedsFan

In the smallest of sample sizes, I like Mclain’s defense at SS better. He just looks more fluid. We haven’t really seen Elly range in the holes, or throw on the run very much. MMC certainly handles those plays.

  12. Moon

I went to HS with Kyle Tuckers Dad. I still trade a message with him on rare occasion on Facebook. I do not know Kyle or his brother who was also briefly in the majors. Mike Tucker is a really good guy. I am hoping Kyle does well, except for this series. Sorry Mike….

  13. Kevin H

Good Evening Reds Fans. Happy Friday and lets go..

  14. old-school

Mets 5-1 over STL middle innings for those interested.

    Abbott has been ok.

    • Dennis Westrick

Need Abbott to continue his success and go 6 maybe 7 innings!

  15. JB

Houston announcers said that they have never seen a team have six number one picks in the lineup, like the Reds have tonight.

  16. Mark Moore

Looking at a 2-hour game if somebody scores

  17. JB

That’s why you have Steer at first. Smh

  18. old-school

Steer or any MLB 1b picks that. Newman isnt a first baseman.

    • SlippinJimmy

You know who’d be good at first base? A first baseman.

David Bell doing David Bell things. Because… David Bell? Newman “needs” more reps at 1B?

  19. JB

Wow they gave Pena a single. Home cookin

      • Melvin

Not a great big Newman fan but the throw was in the dirt. Should have been E6.

      • VaRedsFan

MMC would get the error for sure, but that Scoop is made 95% of the time.

    • Mark Moore

Either Thrall or Welch was saying those calls are mostly made in NYC these days.

      • JB

They need to relook at it. It could mean something, if you know what I mean, later in the game. Hint- Sadak will jinx it.

  20. Kevin H

Will Myers struck out with bases loaded. I have come to conclusion he will not be fine.

I do hope he is dfa

    • Mark Moore

Will depend on the FO taking a “sunk cost” approach to him.

  21. old-school

Abbott looks like a RH Mike Leake…Just throws strikes, competes in the zone and never backs down. Hes a keeper for sure.

    • JayTheRed

I would take a Mike Leake… He had a nice career.

  22. Mark Moore

2nd time through the line-up … let’s do some damage and make Dusty chomp through a couple toothpicks.

  23. Mark Moore

That was some funky movement on ball 2. I swear it went up.

  24. Mark Moore

Good challenge by HDTBell and crew.

    • tim

what does “HDT” mean? asking for a friend.

  25. Kevin H

Steer gonna homer this inning 😀

  26. Mark Moore

Cowboy saying “I guess everything’s a hit these days” 😀

    • JB

Well McLain just beat it out. So that should be a hit.

  27. Mark Moore

Mistake by France NOT to step off and throw to 2nd. But it probably doesn’t matter. Unless Steer can make it happen.

  28. Mark Moore

    Yeah … I’m good … get off the field … 😛

  29. Mark Moore

Focus … all you need to do is get Diaz.

  30. Old-school

Abbott and McLain…2 rookies …are the Reds best players tonight through 4 innings.

McLain is a good SS and a good player.

    Bullpen should be rested

  31. Kevin H

15 consecutive scoreless innings by Abbott

  32. Mark Moore

52 pitches and maintaining his 0.00 ERA … need to back him up, boys.

  33. Melvin

52 pitches after 4 innings. Not bad Mr. Abbott. 0 RUNS

  34. JB

Tucker first lefty in the majors to get a hit off of Abbott

  35. VaRedsFan

    Abbott – UVA grad.
UVA just went up 4-1 on FLA (India).

I wonder if AA and India have a bet??

    • Indy Red Man

Guess who has Cavs/Reds parlay. More on Va +110

  36. Mark Moore

1 hour in and 1/2 way through. Who’s gonna blink first?

    • JB

Houstons bullpen ERA is 3rd best. Reds 10th. Could go 20 innings.

  37. MK

If the Reds stay in contention I could see Barrero being the prospect included in a trade. Could also be traded for another teams highly touted but thus far disappointing prospect.

  38. Mark Moore

Need a pair of bike helmets here.

  39. Mark Moore

Terrible call, but the drop probably played into it.

  40. Indy Red Man

Irritating to see our C team lineup make their C+ pitcher look like a stud. Senzel/Newman/2nd catcher in the lineup for no reason

    • SteveAReno

Your making C team funnies. Newman’s double is what scored Benson to win the game!

  41. Kevin H

Ball four that should of been a strike.

  42. Dennis Westrick

First real test for Abbott tonight! Pitching on the road against WS Champs, albeit cheaters, and in a hostile atmosphere!

  43. VaRedsFan

That was a clear strike…Maile dropped it and blocked the umps view.

  44. Dennis Westrick

I cringe after every walk by a Reds pitcher, whether it’s a starter or reliever!

  45. old-school

Why is a strike a ball because a human catcher makes a mistake trying too hard to get read y for a throw. A strike in the zone is a strike is a strike. a ball is a ball is a ball.

    • JayTheRed

Robo umps next season. Bet you’re going to love that old-school.

    • Dennis Westrick

Solution – Robo umpire behind home plate!

      • old-school

I approve. Im old school for work ethic and that its. Results matter.

  46. Mark Moore

Dodged a freaking HAIL of bullets and mortar shells.

Nice job by Abbott to focus and get ‘er done!

    • Dennis Westrick

What do you think? Is Abbott a keeper?

  47. Dennis Westrick

Pitching to Altuve is challenging as his strike zone is about 12 inches!

  48. Dewey Roberts

I can see why it took so long for the Reds to call up Abbott. He clearly cant pitch. Lol! Seriously, had any Reds pitcher ever started his career like this? I can’t remember one in my lifetime as a fan since 1961

    • Dennis Westrick

Apparently using the same logic with CES as he’s struggling to hit! Also a Reds fan since 1961 and my dislike of the NY Yankees started then too!

      • Dewey Roberts

He had an amazing start, but I think he was scored on in his first three games.

      • Daytonnati

Oh, in terms of shutout innings? Yeah, I can’t remember anyone with a streak like Abbott.

  49. Dennis Westrick

Bernies now up 4-1 over the Pirates!

  50. Mark Moore

At least we’re past Altuve for the 6th. Texas Hold ‘Em again and Abbott is well on his way.

  51. Old-school

Not sure what David bell and Reds looking at with righty v righty line up. reds need Jake Fraley and the good version of Joey Votto and Elly and this game proves that. Newman at first base?????

  52. Mark Moore

Notice MattyMc kept moving toward first while he worked to control the ball before throwing it. I really like this kid at SS.

  53. JB

Stop throwing to first. Newman scares me over there.

  54. SlippinJimmy

Note to D. Bell: that right there is why you have an OUTFIELDER playing OUTFIELD.

    • Mark Moore

I think Senzel makes the catch that Steer couldn’t. Of course, that would mean starting players in spots where they actually have experience.

  55. Mark Moore

TJ with the great track and catch.

Abbott should get his shot at starting the 7th, though I’m fine if HDTBell puts Farmer in. Quite the streak to start his career in any case. He’s not going back to the minors.

  56. Dennis Westrick

If Abbott didn’t issue the 2 walks he may have been able to go 8 innings! That would be a FIRST for a Reds starter this season I believe.

In any event, Abbott has been spectacular!

And, the bullpen loves him too I bet!

  57. Old-school

Ty Steve says hello Crawford box

  58. Mark Moore

I was going to say TySteve looked a little lethargic … but maybe not.

  59. Dennis Westrick

This is shaping up to be a one (1) run game or whomever blinks first!

  60. VaRedsFan

Good to see him pull it with authority.

  61. Mark Moore

That Crawford Box shot may have rattled France a bit.

  62. Indy Red Man

Stewie was on a roll too, but Senzel has the grit factor.

      • SlippinJimmy

From benching 315? Can he do 405?

  63. Mark Moore

Lucky carom and we get #2 across. Nice job Newman and Benson.

    • JayTheRed

I’m starting to warm on Benson.

    • Beaufort Red

+1000 That’s why you keep Newman up and send Barrero down.

      • SteveAReno

Newman is a strong positive for the Reds.

    • JayTheRed

I have no problem with him in the line-up tonight. Newman has been an important part of this team. Just don’t like him playing 1st and I don’t like him batting 1st in the order either.

  64. VaRedsFan

Fortunate kick off the scoreboard let the hustling Benson score.
    Big hit by Newman!

  65. Melvin

That’s the first time I remember Bell taking Newman out of a game.

  66. Randoxu1

Newman comes through again. The bashing of Newman on here is non stop and makes no sense. You have to have some veteran players and he’s done a great job regardless of all the hate he gets.

    • Mark Moore

It’s more of where he plays. He’s adequate at 1B, but Steer is clearly better. Newman at 3B, Steer at 1B, and Senzel in LF would have been my preferred options given ELDC is clearly getting the night off.

    • Hanawi

He’s a journeyman. Others praise him like he’s an everyday star.

    • SteveAReno

Newman’s double wins the game. The bashers never stop. After Newman, it will be someone else on our team. It’s like are really trolls.

  67. Mark Moore

Looks like Abbott is done based on him wearing a towel rather than his hat.

  68. Indy Red Man

Ole Dusty. I will never forgive him baseball wise for leaving Latos in. Everyone knew he was melting down. Everyone. Taxi drivers in Bangladesh knew it, but Dusty somehow didn’t

    • Indy Red Man

I am glad he finally got a ring

    • Harry Stoner

Dusty Baker still gives the best post game interviews in MLB.

“It’s like when Hank Aaron told me to lay off Drysdale’s curve….”

  69. JayTheRed

See my comment a few spots above.

  70. Old-school

Milwaukee beating the Pirates. 9 outs and the Red s within 1/2 game of first place and tied with the brewers for most wins in the NL central. I may just go to bed now and wallow in that. It’s June 16th folks.

    • JB

You ready to ride that Bandwagon into the playoffs , now?

  71. Hanawi

Would have liked to see Abbott go back out there.

  72. Dennis Westrick

Bell just won’t let his starters go beyond the 6th inning, even when they are doing well, which is rare!

Kudos to Abbott for another outstanding start!

    • Indy Red Man

Abbott will probably be on a innings limit. College reliever now going AA AAA 60% season in the bigs? That’s alot

    • Harry Stoner

      Left handed junk ball pitcher.

      What’s not to like?! 😉

      • Dennis Westrick

Reminds me a little of Freddie Norman, but bigger of course!

  73. Steve Schoenbaechler

I don’t know if I would have taken Abbott out. I would definitely have him on a short leash going into the 7th, if I put him back in.

    • Dennis Westrick

Water under the bridge at this point! We survived Farmer’s inning at least!

  74. old-school

    Sims 8th and Diaz 9th?

What is happening here with the Reds?

  75. Mark Moore

HUGE out for Farmer. MASSIVE HUGE!!!

    • Dennis Westrick

Yes! I didn’t know I could hold my breath that long!

  76. Hanawi

Astros lineup without Alvarez is really pretty mediocre. Only one guy over .800 OPS and Tucker is at .805.

  77. Dennis Westrick

Glad I’ve got my industrial size of BP meds!

  78. JayTheRed

Will they please move India back to leading off. Friedl can bat 2nd. Just not the same player when he is not leading off.

  79. old-school

Sims night be a 2 inning save

    Dominant 8th inning

  80. Hanawi

Like to see Sims for a 2nd inning. Give Diaz the night off if you can.

  81. Mark Moore

Are my eyes deceiving me? Are we 3 outs away from stealing the first game from Dusty and the Toothpickers? On the back of another fantastic Abbott start?

  82. Dennis Westrick

I know I don’t get paid to manage this team but based upon Sims performance in the 8th and the fact that he only threw 8 pitches I would at least have him start the 9th inning!

I know that violates Bell’s unwritten rule that NO reliever shall pitch more than one (1) inning most of the time!

  83. Mark Moore

TySteve hit that up the middle with some authority. Maybe he is settling in to his routine.

  84. Hanawi

Should have pinch hit ELDC for Senzel. Senzel cannot hit RHP at all. He’s a platoon guy at best.

  85. Mark Moore

Let’s wrap this up in the bottom half of their order. No matter who we see start the 9th. A win tonight would feel just FANTASTIC!!

  86. SlippinJimmy

Hope he doesn’t use Diaz here unless Sims struggles…

  87. Mark Moore

Diaz for the save attempt to extend his record

    • Mark Moore

Gonna make this interesting, eh? 😮

  88. redbone

It would be really nice to get this win…

  89. Beaufort Red

Hopkins definitely needs to go down next and work on his offense and defense. Seemed like he was lost after he caught the ball .

  90. Mark Moore

Walk the #8 guy without really challenging him … SMH Pretty Hard

  91. JayTheRed

Should have stuck with Sims. Diaz seems pretty wild

    • Mark Moore

      Shoulda-coulda-woulda … but it worked.

Thrall and Cowboy saying this is the time when fatigue sets in for a closer. Diaz has to learn how to battle through that.

  92. LT

    Phew.
I would not call the police because it’s not a steal. We win it out right. Awesome

  93. Mark Moore

Diaz extends his streak and is now ahead of his dormant brother for consecutive saves.

This is what .500 ball in June looks like. And we got there by beating some good teams.

Keep the pressure on Saturday and Sunday … and keep having fun! Maybe ELDC finds the Crawford Boxes tomorrow going oppo.

    Night all!

  94. VaRedsFan

I HATE allowing the free steal.
    Glad for the win though

  95. redbone

Abbott really looking like the real deal!

  96. Kevin H

    Reds rolling. 6 in a row. 35-35.
Bell and his coaching staff have done a good job with this team.

Some moves I shake my head, however remarkable.

    • Moon

Last year at 70 games Reds were 24-46. 11 full games behind this years version

  97. SlippinJimmy

Send Diaz back to Cincy. Give the guy a rest.

  98. Harry Stoner

    Big win.

Sure the Asterisks are depleted sans Alvarez.

    But so are the Reds.

    Sims seems to be back.

Let’s celebrate .500 and come back at them tomorrow.

  99. old-school

For 5 minutes….the Reds lead the NL central in wins with 35.

Raise your hand if you predicted that in mid June

    • Mark Moore

      Nope, nope, nopity, nope-NOPE!!

    • Dennis Westrick

Can’t raise my hands! Still trying to put the cap on my BP medicine bottle!

  100. Mark Moore

TySteve working in “America’s Team” TWICE during the Jim Day post-game interview. 😀

    Got to love that!

  101. TR

A big win; nerves at the end. Six strong innings from Abbott. Two good lefties on a starting pitching staff is tough to beat.

  102. 2020ball

Fun times yall. Watched this game from the bar near the beach. Is Abbott the Reds best pitcher?

    • Dennis Westrick

It’s all good! 1/2 game behind both the Bernies & the Pie-Rats!

  103. Dennis Westrick

I guess with all the Rookies on this team a good moniker would be The Cardiac Kids!

  104. Protime

Tough game! Gritty Diaz get it’s done. He needs a rest. Solid starting pitching, set up, and closer along with timely hitting a winning recipe.
