The Cincinnati Reds will take the field at Kauffman Stadium tonight looking to pick up another win against the Royals. They beat Kansas City 5-4 on both Monday and Tuesday night, and a win this evening would give the Reds a 3-game sweep hearing to an off day on Thursday. Tonight’s first pitch is set for 8:10pm ET.

Ben Lively

The last time out was a tough one for Ben Lively as he allowed seven runs in 6.2 innings – including giving up three home runs to the Cardinals hitters. He’s given up a lot of home runs this season, but he’s kept runners off of the bases so it hasn’t been as harmful as it could otherwise be.

So far this season Ben Lively has had reverse splits. He’s held left-handed hitters to a .211 average and a low walk rate. Right-handed hitters are hitting a little better, hitting .254. Righties strike out more than lefties have, but are showing similar power and walk rates as lefties.

Daniel Lynch

After missing the first month of the season with a rotator cuff injury, Lynch went on a month-long rehab stint in the minors before being activated in the final week of May. He’s made three starts since his return and has been solid across the board.

Looking at his splits from last season (this season doesn’t make sense given he’s thrown just over 16 innings), lefties hit better against him than righties did. But that doesn’t actually provide much information because teams pretty much only let their best left-handed hitter on the team face him because in 27 games he pitched in eight games where he didn’t face a single lefty and in the other 19 games they had just 76 plate appearances. Right-handed hitters found success against Lynch, hitting for average, getting on base at a solid clip, and hit for a solid amount of power.

Lively Over 17.5 outs tonight. He might give up a TD but Bell let’s him get his innings in. Hopefully he can miss some barrels tonight

    • VaRedsFan

Let’s hope he does, because that would be good news for the Reds.

Only caveat is, they have an off day tomorrow, so Bell might be willing to use the entire pen, and have a quicker trigger, if need be.

  2. Steve Schoenbaechler

Doug, I know you’ve heard it before, but I still don’t believe you hear it enough. Thank you for Redlegnation.

    • Steve Schoenbaechler

Not only providing us the source but also putting up with us all, me included.

    • REdsvol

+10,000. Thank you Doug and thank you @Steve for reminding us to thank him!

      • REdsvol

oh, and thank you Doug for your other site – Redsminorleagues.com. Because of it, I feel like I know so much more about the guys that have come up over the last several years.

    • JayTheRed

Had a friend who is a big Brewers fan see this site and asked me what it was all about. He was very jealous of the detailed information that is presented here and that on a daily basis there is great analysis done by the team here.

Thanks again Doug for you and your team for what you do daily here during the season and during the offseason.

  3. Dennis Westrick

Can we PLEASE have a “normal” game tonight! And, I challenge anyone on this site to define “normal” when applied to this 2023 Reds team!

Let’s finish the job by sweeping the Royals and move on to Houston!

    • Mark Moore

A Houston team without Lance McCullers … hope he recovers well. Don’t wish a season-ending injury on anyone.

    • Melvin

Famous quote from Dennis the other night after Karcher finished the game, “Let’s not do that again”. 😀

  4. Mark Moore

OK, friends, I really mean it tonight …

I can’t stay up late. So we need to pile on early and get a huge lead (I won’t even suggest the alternative). That library book is now overdue and not finished yet. No fines, but it’s a new release, so I don’t want to hold on to it too long and deprive others on the wait list.

Almost time to Kick This Pig!!!

    • Dennis Westrick

Yep! Two late nights in a row are making this old man feel even older! Playing at Houston won’t be any better unfortunately!

      • Mark Moore

I can handle Friday night. Saturday and Sunday are earlier starts. Just have to make it through tonight.

  5. LDS

Friedl injured? Other than McLain, he’s the only guy hitting .300 regardless of L/R pitchers. I guess it’s just a Bell thing. Numbers don’t matter.

    • Mark Moore

      It’s a Handyman special situation

      • Melvin

Yeah. Me no understand about Friedl for a LONG time. I don’t know what he has to do to show he can hit LH pitching. Having said that here’s hoping we win with WHATEVER lineup Bell uses.

    • Redsfan4life

LHP for KC. Like it or not he isn’t starting much against a LHP

    • Redsvol

actually, I think its a good idea to give him the entire night off. Gives him 2 days (with the off day) to rest up the hamstring. Hamstrings on professional athletes just linger forever unless they are dealt with properly. Here’s hoping he can make it thru without any more major DL time because he is the straw that stirs the drink IMO.

  6. Tim

Can really gain some ground tonight with a win. And I concur with gratitude for this site Doug

  7. Redsfan4life

Win tonight means a winning road trip 5-1 heading to Houston for 3.

  8. Redsfan4life

They are very high in MLB in wins when a LH starting pitcher starts. I’d say sitting Friedl hasn’t hurt. He will be in at some point anyway.

  9. Moon

Brewers have lost 6 in a row including today. The Cardinals have lost 5 in a row. Oakland has won 7 in a row including the last 2 over Tampa Bay. Kansas CIty now has the worst record in baseball. The odd of the Reds making the playoffs as shown above is now over 7%. The Red enter tonight’s game 2.5 games behind the Pirates for the Division lead and 3 behind the Giants for the last WC spot. The Giants have won 4 in a row to move ahead of Milwaukee for that last playoff position. All in all it has been a pretty good 10 day for the Reds. Free CES!

  10. Dennis Westrick

I’ve come to the conclusion that being a Reds fan (short for fanatical) during the Reign of Bell is like riding a roller coaster without a the lap restraint in place! This year in particular has been a wild up & down ride! Still believe this Reds team has a real chance at winning the NL Central Division or snagging one the 3 Wild Card spots!

Just need to keep on winning series regardless of the opponent!

    • Mark Moore

      +5,000

Have to win the NLC. I don’t see a WC berth coming out of that division.

      • Dennis Westrick

It’s there for the taking Mark! Need some injured pitchers to make it back and adding CES would help the offense IMO!

      • Melvin

Adding Chapman if possible would help too.

      • Moon

Probably but the Pirates and Brewers have held that last WC spot most of the year until just a few days ago. The six game losing streak by the Brewers dropped them out of it. Just saying I would not write that last WC spot off.

      • Mark Moore

I just looked at the standings. I honestly thought there were more teams ahead of us for the WC. A whole lot of season to play and winning the NLC is still the best option. But the 3rd WC slot may remain at the edge of the table anyway. 😀

      • JB

Wild Card? Who cares about Wild Card. They will win the division. We don’t need no stinkin wild card. The of little faith.

    • JayTheRed

We have a pretty rough stretch in the schedule from here until the All-Star Game. Only a few chances at teams that have losing records.

Oh, speaking of All Stars everyone go vote for Matt McClain for SS for the All-Star Game.

    • Daytonnati

Yeah, I noticed. Hope it’s not an omen.

      • Michael Lieb

He is not in the same seat as the last two nights. Sitting to the right from the centerfield camera

  11. Old-school

Why does Kevin Newman get the most at bats hitting lead off. Is this the guy that hits 5x and more than anyone else? Makes no sense hitting lead off. Id rather McLain or India or Steer or EDLC get 5 at bats .

    • wkuchad

Look at his stats vs lefties. I thought we were done complaining about Newman vs left handed pitchers.

      • old-school

Lead off hitter ….lead off hitter.

Are you saying newman deserves the most at bats in a game of all the players on this Reds roster

      • Melvin

I know Newman hits lefties pretty good but a better lineup in my view without Friedl (smh) would have been something like this:

        McLain
        India
        De La Cruz
        Steer

Those would have been my top four but oh well. Let’s win either way.

  12. Dennis Westrick

Would like to see more patience from the Reds hitters!

  13. Mark Moore

Minor Keystone Kops routine brewing there. Lively needs to get Massey and wipe this inning off the books.

  14. Dennis Westrick

Why is Hopkins in the outfield? Asking for a friend!

    • Mark Moore

      Handyman special placement 😛

He’ll be back in L’ville soon enough.

  15. Mark Moore

Time for ELDC to get #2. Kauffman is a big field, but he’s bigger.

  16. Bet on Red

Can we get the sweep tongiht….

  17. Mark Moore

Nope … it was Steer who pounded one.

  18. Melvin

Another Reds awesome Rookie…STEER with the HR. 🙂

    • wkuchad

Rookie and team MVP so far this year

      • JayTheRed

Steer is my 2nd favorite player on the Reds. McClain is my favorite.

  19. Dennis Westrick

Steer has been more than a pleasant surprise!

  20. Indy Red Man

Losing Tyler at DH would be a plus. I think he’d have 1 hr if he played at an average park. I’ll even take Votto

  21. Daytonnati

JB – I think I spot #94 on the right side behind home plate.

  22. Mark Moore

Let’s keep this lead and then make it grow.

  23. SlippinJimmy

Anyone else think maybe Elly would be better off batting 3rd? Steer is certainly an appropriate #4.

    • Melvin

Problem is India, Friedl (when he plays smh), and McLain are pretty good top of the order guys already.

    • MBS

I like the fact that we are starting to get so many players who can fill important spots in the lineup. I could be convinced that Friedl, India, or McLain should be the leadoff hitter. That middle is filling up too, with EDLC, and Steer. It’s only going to get fuller when CES joins the team.

      • JayTheRed

Don’t forget Frailey too. Nice middle of the order guy.

    • Ted Alfred

I actually think they should drop Elly down to 6th or 7th right now because you can tell he’s pressing and he’s guessing a lot and really not coming close on most of the breaking balls, so I think it’d be better to take some pressure off of him until he relaxes a bit

      • JayTheRed

I’m with Ted, Maybe bat him a little lower but not much lower.

  24. Mark Moore

Nice throw by Stewie. Great tag from MattyMc. Erases that mistake by Lively.

  25. wkuchad

For some reason, I thought Fairchild was starting in RF tonight. Glad I was wrong.

      • Kevin H

No, just having some fun. His first name is Kevin, he can’t be all that bad. hahahahah

    • Mark Moore

In a world where awesome = average then yes, yes he is. 😀

Seriously, a nice guy and has been getting the job done. Not a huge fan of him leading off, but whatever …

      • Kevin H

Nor am I, and I dunno Friedl is great. Oh well lol

      • Kevin H

@JB, that is right he is legit!! I forgot lol

  26. Melvin

Barrero robbed. Excellent line drive hit with nothing to show for it.

  27. Mark Moore

These Royals can play some D … have to give them that.

  28. Kevin H

How about those A’s. 7 wins in a row. Baseball is a strange game sometimes

  29. Melvin

Pretty good play by Fairchild there.

  30. Dennis Westrick

Reds making Lynch look like a Cy Young candidate! And, yes, there have been some hard hit balls but need to string some hits together and add on to this slim lead!

  31. Kevin H

Connor Phillips is pitching lights out in double A.

    • Melvin

Yeah. I noticed that. He could be AAA bound soon. If he turns into another Abbott we’ve got our starting pitcher without trading anyone. Just need a good lefty…hint hint…in the pen.

  32. Kevin H

2 errors by Hopkins, is he not a right fielder? One of those games?

    • Mark Moore

He’s a AAA guy who can play the corners. That won’t work in a park like Kauffman.

  33. Dennis Westrick

OK, now 2 mistakes by Hopkins! Good choice by Bell

    • SlippinJimmy

Here ye, here ye! These beith the Laws of Bell! How dare thou questioneth his superiority in all things?

    • wkuchad

When Hopkins was first called up and didn’t immediately start every game, Bell was blasted on this site. Pick a lane.

  34. SlippinJimmy

Reds need to have some Red Bull. Time to channel their inner Max Verstappen.

  35. Dennis Westrick

Nice recovery by Lively to limit the damage to one (1)! Let’s get that run back plus a bunch more! I would really like to turn in at my normal work day bedtime at 10:30!

  36. Melvin

Good bunt by McLain. Almost made it. We know now for sure he CAN bunt…not that he should often though.

  37. Mark Moore

Let’s see if that’s the sparkplug that ignites a little rally here

  38. Mark A Verticchio

Reds need a big inning, 1 hit in 10 innings.

  39. Melvin

Hahaha I don’t know how McLain read that so well but I’m glad he did.

  40. Mark Moore

Super aggressive play by MattMc. Glad it worked out in our favor.

  41. Old-school

Mclain should hit lead off if Friedl doesnt against lefties. He needs the most at bats. Speed. Runs…

    • Melvin

I think McLain would be an excellent leadoff hitter. He’s an on base machine and a good hitter as well. Perfect.

    • JayTheRed

No I disagree. I think McClain should be batting 3rd. Consistently gets hits all the time.

  42. Mark Moore

Mental error on India for not looking back to pick up the ball.

    • Dennis Westrick

Little League play by India! Reds baserunning looks like a Keystone Cops episode!

      • Kevin H

busted out laughing at this comment LOL..

I bet you have people laughing with your sarcasm LOL

  43. Dennis Westrick

EDLC can’t catch a break tonight!

    • Indy Red Man

He’s not hitting anything hard lately, but it’s a learning process

  44. JB

Reds have a record of 7-13 on last games of a series. They need to improve on that. They looked sluggish early but speed and youth have solved that some.

    • Melvin

One could argue that David Bell is not using his “getaway day” lineups as much.

    • wkuchad

We’ve had a few questionable lineups in getaway games. Tonight is not that case.

      • Melvin

Unless you count Friedl…but he always does that. lol

  45. Melvin

Lively keeping us in the game so far. Good job.

  46. Melvin

McLain giving Steer a run for his money as team MVP this season. Great jump, timing, and grab on that line drive.

  47. Mark Moore

That half-inning helps. Now let’s pile on!

  48. Indy Red Man

That’s about 4 balls roped to 2b shaded up the middle

  49. Kevin H

Fairchild does it again. He doesn’t want to go down

    • JB

I would be surprised if he does. He plays great defense and has a nice arm. His bat gets more consistent, look out.

    • wkuchad

I think there almost no chance Fairchild is sent down

      • Melvin

Who knows? Somebody has got to go. Lots of somebodies.

  50. Mark Moore

Another jack by the 14-year-old! That’s the kind of juice we need to see.

  51. Melvin

Fairchild! Hard to give up on him. Home Run!

  52. Mark Moore

That’s a case of better lucky, amiright?

    1st career steal by Hopkins.

  53. VaRedsFan

Fairchild and #15 prospect for Chapman….while his value is the highest

    • Melvin

I’d probably do that. Don’t know it KC would though. lol

  54. JB

Barrero can’t buy a hit. Robbed twice

  55. Mark Moore

This just in … Bobby Witt is a really good fielder.

    • JayTheRed

No that has been known since he came up. KC does have a pretty decent fielding team overall.

  56. Melvin

Barrero robbed AGAIN! Good hard hit. Can’t complain about his hitting tonight.

    • VaRedsFan

Tune in a week from now when he gets another shot

      • Ted Alfred

Poor Barrero…. Crushed two balls in two at bats and he’s got nothing to show for it.

  57. Indy Red Man

Told ya Stewie had some pop!! He’s had quite the series

  58. Kevin H

I called it Mclain homerun, however I didn’t comment on here LOL

My thought was a bunt hit last inning and a three run bomb now

  59. Melvin

McLAIN!!! = AWESOME Three run dinger!

  60. Mark Moore

    That’s what I call going yard … WOW!!! 😮

  61. Dennis Westrick

Hopkins is 0-2, batting .190 with 2 bonehead plays in the outfield. The late, great John Madden was once asked by a sideline reporter to comment on one his Raider players who was having a bad game! The question was “How much longer is he gonna remain in the game?” Madden said NFL. The confused reporter asked Madden to explain what he meant and he said again, NFL – Not For Long!

    • Dennis Westrick

Correction! Hopkins is now 1 for 2! My bad!

      • MBS

To be fair, his non hit was a bullet, just at the RF. He’s probably a day late and a dollar short with these hard hits, because the IL squad is about to return.

  62. Mark Moore

    What are we seeing????

    Talk about piling it on.

  63. Melvin

Can EDLC make it three in a row? 🙂

  64. Dennis Westrick

I thought the HR Derby was part of the All Star week!

    • JayTheRed

This is a preview of the Reds taking over the All Star Game voting in 2025. Maybe even 2024.

  65. VaRedsFan

That ball swims with the fishes in the fountains.

  66. Amarillo

This team is tired of small ball.

  67. Old-school

    What is going on exactly?

    Queue the Michael Scott GIF

    Its happening

  68. Kevin H

When De La Cruz gets hot again look out world

  69. Mark Moore

JB – did you ship a case of raw Seneca Lake water to the boys and somehow get them to drink it? I’m thinking that would explain some of what we’re seeing. Glacial lake water is magical afterall.

  70. Melvin

Lively not great but not pitching bad either. Need to get out of this inning with very little to no damage.

    • Melvin

No. Hope not. No walks tonight. That alone should help your blood pressure Dennis. 🙂

      • Dennis Westrick

Gonna send the Reds FO a bill to cover the cost of my BP meds, CBD products and additional adult beverages I need to watch this team!

    • JayTheRed

I let him go another inning.
      Bell probably won’t though.

    • redbone

With this lead let him go another. A well rested bully with the off day and a big series coming against a monster.

  71. JayTheRed

Lively may have looked a little shaking to start the game but now he seems to have settled in nicely.

Just heard that Chapman has said yes in an interview that he would like to come back to the Reds.

    • Melvin

Yep. I’m thinking more and more we ought to get him. The Cowboy was in awe when thinking about him and Diaz in the late innings. Me too.

  72. Indy Red Man

C’mon Lively…get thru 6. Already cashed Reds ml with the 2 run lead promo

    • JB

Wait wait, you dog the starting pitching relentlessly and then you bet on them?

      • Indy Red Man

Hes been bad lately? I’m not a cheerleader

      • Indy Red Man

I also talked about Lively when nobody mentioned him or wrote one word about him. None of you, Doug, or anybody else

      • JB

True but you crapped on him for the past 2or 3 starts. Said he was trash. So what is it?

  73. Daytonnati

Now Indy has to sweat out three more outs 🙂

  74. old-school

Reds and Pirates battling for #1 pick in 2022.

No battling for best young team in 2023. I didnt see that.

  75. Melvin

Keep this up we pick up a game on the Brewers. Pirates are winning in the sixth.

  76. Dennis Westrick

6 or 7 innings from Lively tonight would be huge given the challenge ahead in Houston!

    • JayTheRed

Nope Bell doesn’t let any starter finish their innings. Almost always 4 and 2/3, 5 and 2/3, 6 and 2/3… That’s one of the many things that drives me bananas about David Bell.

  77. Mark Moore

Need a pair of bike helmets here

  78. JB

So these guys are going nowhere
    1) McLain
    2) EDLC
    3)India
    4)Steer
    5)Freidl
    6) Stephenson
    7) 2nd catcher

Then these 6 have a chance on being sent down.
    8) Fairchild
    9) Benson
    10)Newman
    11)3rd catcher
    12) Barrero
    13) Hopkins

No really set order there. So don’t get to infatuated with that. But basically this is who goes from 13 down when players start coming back. Senzel, Fraley, Votto,Myers, CES … You bring up those five and we could be looking at a different team. At least bench

    • wkuchad

I think 8, 9, and 10 have almost no chance of being sent down. Just my opinion.

      • JB

I agree but one might if Myers is your 4th guy called up. I would DFA him personally.

      • Dennis Westrick

No way Bell agrees to get rid of Newman!

      • JB

Dennis- I don’t think Bell has a choice. I will say Newman has been a nice surprise though and probably has more trade value than Myers.

  79. Melvin

Tell ya what. EDLC, McLain, and Barrero is a pretty good up the middle defense.

    • Ted Alfred

Barrero again…for the 3rd time kills a ball, this time right at 3rd…hitting missiles around the infield with nothing to show for it…0-3.

  80. Mark Moore

Welsh talking about pitching to George Brett. Used the phrase “trying to sneak the sunrise past a rooster” about throwing him a fastball and thinking he’d get away with it.

    • JB

Haha great line. I love Welsh. Great sense of humor.

  81. Mark Moore

My wife asking if HDTBell has his concession coupon with him to give to Lively when he takes him out 😀

  82. Indy Red Man

Noooo. Lol. Still made a little with the DraftKings promo. Lively competes, but he’s so hittable. Idk? I guess he might pull off 4.90 as the 5th starter….maybe?

  83. Steve Schoenbaechler

Alright, not only us here but many baseball pundits talking about how are bullpen is being strained; I believe even Bell has talked about it. So, what does he do? He pulls a starter with a 7-2 lead in the 6th after 95 pitches and 2 out? Alright. . .

    • Indy Red Man

Last time he let off the gas StL rallied and he ended up needing Diaz. We don’t need that

  84. Mike Adams

Five out of the Reds’ seven hits are extra base hits.
    FEEL the POWERRRRRR!

  85. old-school

A Reds win tonight is unquestionably the high water mark of the season and a nice day off

  86. Dennis Westrick

OK, this is the point in the game where I start counting outs! I don’t start in the 5th inning because I would have to take my socks & shoes off!

    • Harry Stoner

We’re not out of the woods yet.

We’ve seen this kind of lead go up in smoke too many times.

      • Dennis Westrick

Yep! Here we go! Leadoff triple off of Young!

  87. Mark Moore

Chumpire must be double-parked. Seems his zone is expanding.

    • Dennis Westrick

Either that or Happy Hour at the Holiday Inn ends soon!

      • Mark Moore

        I think it’s the Airport Ramada 😀

  88. VaRedsFan

1st missplay i’ve seen from Barrero in CF

  89. Mark Moore

I’m thinking Friedl catches that. Inexperience. Glad we’re ahead by 5.

  90. Harry Stoner

Time for Bell to wake up and take charge.

Don’t sit around twiddling until it;s a one run game.

  91. VaRedsFan

over 9.5 gets there tonight, after last night’s horrific beat

    • Dennis Westrick

Someone please tell Young we have a 4 run lead and don’t walk anyone! Bell made a good choice in pulling him! Sends a message IMO!

      • Mark Moore

I tried … the call went straight to voicemail

  92. Dennis Westrick

Cubs just put up a 6-spot on the Pie-Rats and lead 7-5 in the 7th inning!

  93. MBS

Real good chance the Reds, Pirates, and Brewers will all be tied with 34 W at the end of the day.

  94. JB

Barrero can’t worry about the runner going to 3rd. Inexpierence.

  95. Mark Moore

They’re gonna make me stay up past my bedtime again, aren’t they … 🙁

    • Dennis Westrick

Sometimes better to be lucky than good!

  96. Dennis Westrick

OK, I can breathe again! Reds outfield “defense” has been offensive!

    • Mark Moore

Definitely not the “A-Team” out there tonight.

    • JayTheRed

Don’t worry it’s not our normal OF.

  97. Beaufort Red

This inning shows why Barrero needs to go down. Work on his outfield defense. You just can’t throw a shortstop to the outfield, even if he’s a great athlete. This ain’t high school ball.

  98. Mark Moore

That strike to ELDC probably should have been in the fountain.

    • Jim Walker

Yes, but I think one of EDLC’s biggest adjustments right now is that he had the ABS system absolutely dialed in and now he is having to adjust to a changing zone every night.

  99. Dennis Westrick

EDLC 0-4 tonight! Needs to relax and use his skills! May need to move him out of the 4-spot in the batting order and put CES there! Oh, that’s right! CES still stuck in Louisville!

    • SlippinJimmy

Prediction: Elly will be back in Houston.

      • Dennis Westrick

Hope you’re right! He puts a lot of pressure on the opposing team’s defense as well as the opposing pitcher when he gets on base!

    • VaRedsFan

So if he was batting 6th he would be hitting?

    • LDS

And hitless for the series with a GIDP in each game. N all honesty, a dose of humility will probably help him in the long run.

  100. Beaufort Red

I knew that every time Sadak wet his pants over EDLC, it may come back to bite him. EDLC is a unbelievable talent, but major league pitchers with their advance scouting reports are a different breed. If nothing else he needs to be dropped to 5th or 6th. Less pressing.

    • bug

Yes, Red. I concur. Way too many Ks for EDLC!!! He takes too many pitches. He needs to take his bat off his shoulders and get his swings in. The other night he took 3 pitches right down the heart of the plate and then sat down. No excuse for that. Matt McClain is the player!!! If EDLC does not cut way down on his Ks, he needs to be sent back down to AAA to figure it out. The best thing about this team is this year we are not strking out (since we don’t have Suarez king his normal 200 times/year,..along with some of the others we no longer have). We don’t need someone batting clean up that is extremely prone to whiffing. Something needs to change soon about his strike outs.

  101. Ted Alfred

Hopkins defense tonight has been terrible, along with Berraro in CF. Time for those 2 to head back to AAA when Senzel comes up…then trade Barrero to a team needing a SS

  102. Mark Moore

Welsh is golfing tomorrow (the 2-some or 3-some he’s playing with has no idea he’s joining them) and Thrall/Cowboy are headed out to sea to try and catch dinner.

  103. Mark Moore

    Another misplay.

Thrall is right, these are not “easy” but between inexperience and Kauffman this is what we’re getting.

  104. SlippinJimmy

You know who’d be good in center field? A center fielder.

    • Mark Moore

You think? This should underscore why you can’t just throw ELDC to the wolves and put him out there.

    • VaRedsFan

Billy Hamilton was a SS, and became just about the best CF’er I’ve ever seen.

  105. Ted Alfred

And right on cue he badly misplays that ball to Right Center…wow. He is a really good shortstop defensively who is not an outfielder and he’s never going to play SS for the Reds again…time to work a trade

    • Mark Moore

Bad read = bad route = trying to jump for it

  106. Melvin

CF and RF are having bad nights for sure.

  107. Dennis Westrick

We just can’t seem to get an easy win! If it’s not the pitching, it’s the bad baserunning or lack of hitting or awful defense!

  108. Dennis Westrick

Cruz could get a job in Las Vegas! He worked some serious magic to get out of the bottom of the 8th inning!

  109. Indy Red Man

Viva La Mexico City Chihuahua’s new SS Jose Barrero

  110. Melvin

Cubs winning 7-6 bottom of the eighth.

  111. Dennis Westrick

Cubs clinging to a one (1) run lead, 7-6 in the bottom of the 8th inning against the Pirates!

  112. JB

Everytime I see these infielders trying to play the outfield it reminds me of when Bell put Van Meter in the outfield and he immediately turned into Les Nessman.(WkRP) for you youngins.

    • Mark Moore

As God as my witness I thought turkeys could fly!!!

    • VaRedsFan

It’s exactly why the organization should foresee the logjam on the infield, and start getting these guys OF experience in the minors, instead of just hoping things will work out.

  113. Hanawi

Might need to start batting Stephenson 9th. Definitely should not be DHing anymore, which means they can get rid of the 3rd catcher.

  114. Mark Moore

OK, just need 3 outs to call it a wrap. All the drama and angst will be forgotten.

I probably need to check my BP.

  115. Dennis Westrick

Hopkins so far below the Mendoza line he can’t even see it! Can’t wait for Senzel and others to get healthy and return to the lineup!

    • Melvin

Hopkins to me looks intimidated to be in the majors. Good for him to get a taste and then go back down to work on things.

      • Mark Moore

I’d buy that. He came up out of necessity, not because he was ready and tearing it up.

  116. Indy Red Man

Cubs up 3. Reds most likely within 1.5

Feel bad for Barrero actually. Send him down to play SS every day for 4-5 weeks and hopefully he’ll hit this horrific AAA pitching and we can deal him

  117. Dennis Westrick

Cubs increased their lead to 9-6 over the Pie-Rats!

  118. Hanawi

Saw a Twitter post today about how “unclutch” the Royals are as a team. Basically they should have 9 more wins than they do and most of it is because they are absolutely awful in clutch situations. Tonight they have 13 hits and the Reds have committed 3 errors and still they have only 3 runs.

    • JB

I guess we could say the same about the Reds. I mean how many times in the past games have they left runners on 2nd and 3rd ?

      • Hanawi

Reds are in the top 10 in average and middle of the pack in wRC+ in high leverage situations. Royals have a 27 wRC+ and no other team is below 61 (100 is average). They are also the worst in pitching in high leverage situations by quite a lot. Reds are again middle of the pack. Jesse Newell is the name if you want to look the thread up.

  119. Mark Moore

Looking at Witt, I’m thinking he should play CF. What do y’all think?

Just focus on the batters, please.

  120. LT

Beat the team we are supposed to beat and steal some games from the top teams. Should be enough to make the playoffs? On to Houston

  121. Melvin

A walk after getting ahead 0-2. Not good.

  122. Jim Walker

Bell slow to get the closer ready again. He should be in with only 1 out and 2 on despite the 4 run lead.

    • Jim Walker

And there we go. Newman’s best play was to pivot and dive for the 3B bag and hope he got the force out. Like they say on an airplane in the emergency exit briefing, the closest exit may be behind you.

    • bug

Yes, Jim. Bell waited one batter too long to bring in Diaz. Luckily we wone in spite of that mistake, no thanks to Bell’s decision. Oh well. Go Reds!!!

    • Dennis Westrick

      Getting the “homer” calls now!

  123. Melvin

Why do I feel we’ll need Diaz again tonight? Need a double play to end it.

    • JayTheRed

Sure would be nice to have Chapman for the 8th or 9th if Diaz has pitched too much.

Come on get him now don’t wait.

  124. Dennis Westrick

If the Reds outfield plays like they did tonight, they will get embarrassed by the Astros!

  125. Indy Red Man

Diaz should be warming up. Of course we’re off tomorrow so nail this down. Just walked a guy ahead 0-2 with a 4 run lead

  126. JB

You have to eat that Newman. Come on , you’re a veteran.

  127. Mark Moore

Kevin!!! Put that ball in your pocket!!!

  128. Mark Moore

Get 2 outs and give up no more than 2 runs … sounds simple enough, right?

  129. Mark A Verticchio

The Reds have not played well tonight.

  130. Indy Red Man

This team…lol. Predictable that it will get more entertaining then it’s supposed to be whether they’re way up or down

  131. HoF-13

Four errors and a couple of hits that could have should have been outs.

  132. Mark Moore

Facing the 9-hole hitter … don’t lose him.

  133. JB

Like I said, 7-13 record on final game of the series. Don’t know if it’s lack of concentration or eager to get out of town or whatever but they need to clean it up.

  134. Melvin

Well… we win another cardiac game. 🙂

  135. Mark Moore

Finally … press it to the limits but get out of town with a sweep.

22 saves in a row to tie his big brother. That’s got to feel good for Diaz.

    • JB

Yep. Turn out the lights and lock the doors.

  136. Jeff Morris

That was harder than it should have been….Thought A Diaz could have rested tonight, but smart move bringing him in to slam the door. A Diaz is the definition of a closer. These AAA pitchers going from AAA to the Reds and back to AAA and back to the Reds are not the best. Thank God we have a 3-4 run lead tonight.

  137. Dennis Westrick

YIKES! The Reds defense is like a Stephen King novel, very scary!

    • west larry

Yes. they played defense as if they were wearing blindfolds.

  138. LDS

Newman reverting to his career averages. As for Barrero and Senzel, the comments here are somewhat humorous. Put Senzel in the OF and he’ll do what he always does, return to the IL. As for Barrero, starting a 25yo SS once a week in CF and expecting Cesar Cedeno is wishful thinking. So send him down, let him get his stroke back, and trade him. It worked so well with EE.

    • wkuchad

Can always count on LDS to be the proverbial wet blanket after a win

      • LDS

Just observing the facts on the ground. Yes, the Reds swept KC, a team decidedly worse than they are. But, they didn’t exactly dominate. Every team in the NL Central has a negative run differential, the Reds being the worst at -29. If they play no better against Houston, they could well find themselves swept. As for my comments, Senzel was performing adequately at 3rd and wound up on the IL after a couple of games in LF. He isn’t the answer to the Reds OF mess anymore than Myers is. Wins are nice, but I don’t really care this year.

  139. Dennis Westrick

One game under .500 and 1.5 games out of 1st! Let’s see where we are next Monday!

    • JayTheRed

I’m Nervous. We have a lot of tough teams coming up. Colorado might be our only breather until the All-Star Break.

  140. LT

We will have Abbot and Green start in Houston series, so the chance to get a game or two is a ok

  141. Mark Moore

Houston starters not posted for any of the games. Hoping our guys can leverage the day off to clear their heads and focus on winning a game down there. One of three would be a success. Two of three would be a complete gift. And I’ll stop right there.

Let’s see who from our side finds the Crawford Boxes 😀
