Cincinnati has taken the first two games of the series in Miami, coming from behind in both wins. This afternoon they will go for the sweep, which would double their road win total that they had coming into the series. First pitch is set for 1:40pm ET. The game will be free on MLBtv, and is also available on MLB Network as well as Bally Sports Ohio.

Luke Weaver

In his last start there were some good and some bad for Luke Weaver. The good was that he pitched six innings. The bad was that he allowed three home runs – his third multi-home run game out of his four starts.

This season hasn’t been great for Luke Weaver. Left-handed hitters have slugged well against him, but haven’t hit for much average. Righties are not walking much, and not making tons of contact, but when they’ve made contact it’s gone for both hits and for power – big time power.

Braxton Garrett

After getting out to a strong start to the season, Braxton Garrett has gotten hit around in his last two starts. On May 3rd he allowed 14 hits, four homers, and 11 runs in 4.1 innings. His last time out he allowed four runs in 5.1 innings against Arizona.

Left-handed hitters have not found much success against Braxton Garrett this season. In limited action against the fellow lefty they’ve hit just .229 without much power. Right-handed hitters, though, are crushing the ball. They’ve put up 16 extra-base hits against him while hitting .373. They don’t walk much, but they have made plenty of contact and made all of that contact count.

Elly De La Cruz and his transformative May

During the month of May, Elly De La Cruz has walked more often than he’s struck out and he’s absolutely crushed the baseball. Despite being one of the youngest players in Triple-A he’s doing something he’s never done before. Over at RedsMinorLeagues.com we wrote about his month and how impressive he’s been.

According to Bell. Lodolo will be out a minimum of four weeks.

    • Bdh

Is that retroactive to his last start on the 6th or 4 weeks from now?

      • Jim Walker

It can be backdated up to 4 days based on when a player last played. For example, if Friedl does not play today (Sunday) or tomorrow, he reaches the full 4 days of backdating time; and, will stay at 4 days until he is used in a game.

Lodolo already had the 4 days but if they are looking at 4 weeks minimum, that is superfluous.

      • Votto4life

Let’s face it, Lodolo hasn’t pitched well in awhile.

  2. Bdh

I realize Fraley has struggled vs left handed pitching but he’s got 9 RBIs in his last 3 games and Friedl being out has an open spot in the normal lineup used vs LHP. Just a bummer

Looking more at Fraley’s RBIs and being used as strictly a platoon player

    RBI leaders
    Fraley – 28 RBIs – 121 PAs

    Adolis Garcia – 37 – 165
    Rafael Devers – 36 – 167
    Yordan Alvarez – 35 – 143
    Randy Arozarena – 34 – 170
    Marcus Semien – 33 – 182
    Sean Murphy – 32 – 146
    Pete Alonso – 31 – 166
    Cedric Mullins – 31 – 165
    Francisco Lindor – 30 – 169
    Jonah Heim – 29 – 132
    Max Muncy – 29 – 147
    Matt Olson – 29 – 178
    Brent Rooker – 29 – 139
    Andrew Vaughn – 29 – 175
    Alec Brohm – 28 – 160
    Brandon Lowe – 28 – 136
    Christian Walker – 28 – 158

These 17 players average about 159 PAs so an average of 38 more than Fraley right now. He has just been crazy productive this year! He’s already matched his RBI and SB totals from last year

  3. LarkinPhillips

I am glad to see the pitching moves to give us a chance today. I still don’t understand playing two offensive guys down by choice. (counting Friedl and the third catcher. )

  4. Bet on Red

alot of people may have to step up today, Hopefully weaver repeats his last performance

  5. Mark Moore

Facing a bit of a patchwork line-up for the Minnows. Sweep or not, got to love the way the boys played and stayed in these games. What we really want is for Weaver to throw 6 innings and not give up the farm. Bigger park maybe helps with that (unless the fans and A/C are blowing out hard 😀 ).

Almost time to Kick this Pig-Fish one more game!!

  6. JB WV

Love to see 4 in a row and possibly pull even with the Cubs. Give it everything you’ve got, Weaver. Go Reds!

  7. Kevin H

    Love blackouts. LOL.

Go Reds! Make it 4 in a row!!

  8. LarkinPhillips

3 strikeouts on offense. Error and seeing eye grounder, to start on defense. Not a great start.

    • Mark Moore

Scored a “hit” SMH Very Hard 😮

      • Kevin H

So a error on Newman called a hit?

      • LarkinPhillips

@kevin it was a a weak hit high Hopper that Newman charged and “olayed.”

      • Mark Moore

@LarkinPhilips … “ole” is right. I can hear Lou Brown now. 😀

      • VaRedsFan

        High chop…They weren’t getting Berti….thus the hit

    • Erik the Red

Lordy, he looked awful slow on the first 2 ground balls. Not sure why we would play a guy who is not in the future plans at SS. He is not even hitting much better than Jose. Did Jose B. need a day off?

      • Jim t

Bell probably got tired like I am of watching Barrera strike out at least twice a game.

  9. Mark Moore

Well that stinks. Really need a “mental lapse error” for Newman on that first one.

Hope Weaver can shake it off.

  10. LarkinPhillips

A good defense shortstop and I think weaver would have just had a 7 pitch 1-2-3 first.

  11. Mark Moore

Not quite sure why Senzel didn’t tag the runner who was right in front of him. I supposed the hope of a pair of bike helmets take precedence over that.

  12. LarkinPhillips

Good first inning from weaver. Very weak contact and a strikeout.

  13. Mark Moore

Several more pitches than he should have needed to throw, but the job is done.

Now we really need the Crooked Number Hit Parade to show up.

  14. Mark Moore

Until that HBP, I was thinking Braxton was a shoo-in for the NL Cy Young 😉

  15. Mark A Verticchio

The team has been a pleasant surprise, but I have never seen so many players take strike 3 right down the middle as the Red’s have this year. Stephenson and Myers have probably been the biggest culprits.

  16. LDS

Get ready for Friedl to go on the IL. Bell speak suggests Wednesday or so. Maybe we’ll get lucky and not, but don’t bet on it.

    • LarkinPhillips

I thought he should have been placed on it immediately. Obliques are tricky. Especially for an “all out” guy like Friedl.

      • Melvin

Hard to understand how we can “carry” a guy who can’t play when we already have three catchers who aren’t exactly versatile.

  17. LarkinPhillips

I bagged on Newman last inning. Good play by him to start the 2nd.

    • Mark Moore

Agreed, though the “spin throw” still bugs me. Too much margin for error.

  18. Mark Moore

A little redemption from Newman right there. Let’s see if that shakes the cobwebs loose for the rest of the boys.

  19. Mark A Verticchio

I hope Newman keeps hitting because right now Barrero looks totally lost. There is no reason Mclain isn’t in Cincinnati.

    • Melvin

Both Barrero AND Newman have options left to be sent down without losing them. Just have to find a 40 man roster spot for McLain.

    • Beaufort Red

As I’ve said Barrero needs to be sent down to learn a new position. He is not the Red’s future shortstop. Too much talent behind , chomping at the bit. Newman a sufficient bench player.

  20. JB

Berti is just going to keep hitting the ball to Newman today

  21. Mark Moore

Regardless of whether he gets the speedy runner or not, I’m about at my “fed up” point with Newman at SS. Of course, we’ve seen plenty of “sloppy” from Barrero as well. I’ve been hesitant to get on the McLain bandwagon, but maybe it is time.

    • Melvin

Speaking of McLain he just reached again for the second time today (HBP) with a walk earlier. He’s an on base machine not to mention a pretty good hitter (.343) while leading the International League in RBI with 40. Don’t want to imply we could use him though. 🙂

  22. Mark A Verticchio

I think everybody agrees it is time for Mclain. It”s not like he is that young 24 in August.

  23. Mark Moore

    That out was entertaining 😛

    Nice heads-up from Steer.

  24. old-school

Starting Newman at SS with regularity is insanity. Play Barrero or bring up McLain. He also cost the reds a run with his baserunning by not tagging and going to 3rd on fly to RF with outfielder momentum taking him away from 3b. India rocket to 3b would have scored the run.

  25. Tom Mitsoff

I saw the defensive “plays” in the bottom of the third, but apparently there were more like that earlier in the game. Not encouraging.

  26. Mark A Verticchio

Somebody needs to tell Larkin and Sadek that the Marlins Cy Young pitching candidate has a 5 plus Era.

  27. Mark A Verticchio

Just a horrible play by Ramos, pull up and give the guy a single.

    • Melvin

Ramos has the best arm in the outfield but he’s not the best fielder for sure.

  28. Mark Moore

Seems to me there’s aggressive and then “stupid aggressive”. Guess which one I think that was?

  29. Mark Moore

Terrible job by the Chumpire crew on that AB. Having watched some of the AAA game last night, that one “ball” gets overturned, doesn’t it?

  30. Old-school

Say what you all want about Bell and Barrero but the worst players on this team are old guys in a year when the Reds arent winning.

Soon to be 30 yo Kevin Newman and his .579 OPS is playing shortstop with regularity. 31 yo Henry Ramos who played overseas last year and has never had success in MLB is playing with regularity.
    (2) over 30 catchers playing and Will Myers at 32 is just collecting a paycheck

Newman just made his 3rd error of the game

    • Tom Mitsoff

Yeah, there is just no excuse for a guy who is supposed to be a utility infielder to play like that.

    • Melvin

Newman if fine for a backup. “Backup” is the key word. He just plays too much.

      • Ted Alfred

Way too much…same with Myers. Too more veteran stiffs taking up playing time from young guys who should be here now.

  31. Mark Moore

I think I need to check my BP about now.

    • Mark Moore

Surprisingly good given what we saw.

Weaver takes the bull by the horns (or Fish by the gills). Too bad he’s thrown an extra inning’s worth of pitches so far today.

  32. docproc

Newman having a crappy day in the field. So glad he’s a “glove-first” shortstop.
Can we please get McLain up here?

  33. LarkinPhillips

Newman has now cost Weaver around 30 pitches this game. Probably 2 innings with the way Weaver is pitching today.

    • Votto4life

Hard to believe he has a reputation of being a good defensive shortstop

  34. Tom Mitsoff

Anyone counting how many extra pitches Weaver has had to throw because of the defensive misplays?

    • Mark Moore

At least one full inning’s worth. Maybe more as others noted. He’s pretty dialed in.

  35. Ted Alfred

Newman sucks. Freaking Sadak talking about some tough in between balls?? That last ball is the easiest play ever for a freaking 12 year old… let alone a major Leaguer. Sadak is terrible…hopefully this is his last year. He is super annoying and half the stuff he says is way off from reality.

    • LarkinPhillips

I watch games on mute because of him. And you can tell by my name, I like Larkin.

With that said, sadak worked hard to get where he is, working his way up with the minors and all. But he isn’t my cup of tee.

      • Mark Moore

I put the WLW audio overlay on my video feed. Cannot stand Sadak’s constant oral diarrhea.

  36. Melvin

Can’t complain about Weaver today. He’s getting the job done so far.

    • Tom Mitsoff

No question. He’s overcoming terrible support behind him.

  37. Ted Alfred

And I am super impressed with Weaver today. He’s not getting the benefit of many of these borderline calls from the UMP and yet he is just pounding the Zone…up and down, changing speeds and staying ahead of all the hitters…while overcoming terrible infield defense behind him. You can tell Larkin is really impressed with him today and I am too. I think the Reds might have something in Weaver.

  38. Mark A Verticchio

Weaver has done a great job but thanks to Newman his time on the mound is going to be limited. I think someone, anyone needs to tell the Reds brass there is a guy in Louisville having a fair season.

  39. Tom Mitsoff

Today’s game is a good example of the importance of getting the “prospects” into the right positions when they arrive in the big leagues. Getting them here out of position will be counterproductive in both the short term and long term.

  40. SOQ

Weaver today and Diaz yesterday. Nice to see them bear down and get it done

  41. Mark Moore

Ramos hit by his own batted ball … AGAIN.

  42. old-school

Weaver is giving a great SP#5 performance. Hit spots, change speeds, pitch to weak contact, keep your team in the game.

    • Votto4life

Weaver has been living on the outside corner. He has thrown more strikes there than he has been given credit for. He keeps hitting his spot there and he will make a lot of money in this game.

      • Melvin

I would at least like to see the challenge system in the majors for balls and strikes.

  43. Dennis Westrick

Just got back from my grandson’s 9th birthday celebration! How can Weaver be at 85 pitches thru only 4 innings?

    • LarkinPhillips

Bad defense behind him. The normal answer for most times we ask that about the starters lately.

    • Mark Moore

Go back through the thread comments. In short, his “defense” cost him probably close to 30 pitches so far. Add in some marginal squeezing by the HP Chumpire, and you get that high that fast. He’s really been dialed in today. Our guys??? Not so much.

      • Dennis Westrick

Checked the “Team Field” stats on ESPN, the Reds rank 9th out of 15 teams not including today’s Newman’s bobble fest!

  44. Melvin

Meanwhile everybody’s favorite player these days Matt McLain gets another hit down in AAA. (.348)

  45. Mark Moore

Finally a clean inning for Weaver.

  46. Tom Mitsoff

I’m guessing that Weaver is done at 95 pitches, but he pitched SOOO well. If he can continue that, he’s going to be an asset.

    • Melvin

Yeah. We needed a good game from him today and he certainly have it to us.

  47. Old-school

Can we get Garret pitch count up and to the bullpen so Friedl and Fraley are allowed to play? Obviously they are inferior to this offensive righty juggernaut

    • Dennis Westrick

It’s Sunday! Even God rested on the 7th day! That’s humor guys!

    • CI3J

Friedl is still injured, as far as I know.

  48. old-school

Can all the Senzel haters just acknowledge he is playing a good 3b, hits lefties well and is contributing to some good wins?

    • Melvin

I’m happy Senzel is playing well after pretty much leaving him for dead as far as helping the Reds. Very pleasant surprise. However the fact that DLC is playing 3B more than SS down in AAA might be an indication of the future for both.

  49. Kevin H

I napped, sounds like Newman has cost Weaver at least 15 pitches?

  50. Tom Mitsoff

It’s going to be interesting to see what happens if Fairchild comes up in a run-producing situation. If Fraley pinch-hits for him, there’s no qualified fielder to play centerfield unless Friedl can do so.

  51. Mark Moore

Not how you want to draw it up, but it scored a run and moved up the other two guys. Like a weird safety squeeze.

  52. Melvin

Good RBI for TS. I’m sure that’s exactly the way he planned it. 🙂

  53. Oldtimer

Must be following a different game. Weaver has thrown 5 shutout innings with 6 K and 1 BB. Reds have bases loaded in 6th. I’ve seen worse games by Reds.

  54. Melvin

If they give Fraley anything good to hit here they’re nuts.

      • Melvin

…and Ramos proves them as having made the correct decision hitting into a DP.

    • Tom Mitsoff

Miami played it just right. Now who will be playing center field?

      • Tom Mitsoff

Ah! Forgot about the Senzel option.

      • Melvin

Barreo could have played there too with an already short bench though.

  55. Mark Moore

All you had to do was lift a moderately deep fly ball. That’s all we were asking.

    • Dennis Westrick

Again, the cerebral part of the game demands that the batter understand the situation and do his best to hit a sac fly when it is warranted, DPs are definitely rally killers!

  56. old-school

So Friedl is active but not playing entire series and Ramos hits into DP instead of Friedl hitting. Ridiculous.

Bell outmanaged with Marlins walking Fraley to get to Ramos. Ramos and Newman major players in this game for the wrong reasons and thats not what this 2023 season is about. You cant lose games because of Ramos and Newman and both have been awful.

      • Old-school

That was 3 games ago…if he can’t play, call up TJ Hopkins. That was Bell keeping Friedl out and rolling the dice with Ramos. Friedl would not be on the roster today 3 days after an injury if he was a no-go. Bell said he was available.

    • Dennis Westrick

I agree! The Ramos experiment is over! Time to try something else!

    • Kevin H

The oblique area isn’t something to mess with. It was a strain of some sort. Bell said Friedl wouldn’t play all weekend. Some on here thought he would of be IL, and someone brought up.

      • old-school

Bell DID NOT say Friedl wouldn’t play all weekend. Bell said he wouldn’t start but WOULD BE AVAILABLE.

        Get your facts right

  57. Mark A Verticchio

Not the time to pinch hit, should have waited and given Fairchild a chance a saved the defense.

  58. JB

Like I said yesterday, this lineup is lacking below Stephenson. It’s time for some changes.

  59. Mark A Verticchio

In a 1-0 game Bell weakened his defense, especially at 3rd, so Ramos could hit into a double play. He has done a better job lately but that was a bad move.

  60. JB

Drop Kuhnel off the 40 and bring up McLain and drop Ramos off the 40 and bring up Hopkins. Nobody in their right mind are picking them guys up anyways. And Ramos cost us a run and Miami ties it because of that.

  61. Dennis Westrick

Surprised that Bell sent Weaver out for the 6th inning! Having a worn out bullpen will do that!

  62. Mark A Verticchio

You have to score more than 1 run with bases loaded and nobody out. Weaver deserved a better outcome.

    • Dennis Westrick

Reds have done that a lot this year, and last year as well!

    • VaRedsFan

He gave up 4 in six innings last time, but the offense scored 7.
Things like that seem to even out.

      • Kevin H

Baseball is a funny game isn’t it LOL

  63. Votto4life

Bell always makes a move one batter too late. Great job by Weaver though.

    • LarkinPhillips

He has done a good job lately. And in his defense, he has a very shallow bullpen today.

    • Dennis Westrick

Would love to play chess against Bell! Checkmate in 6 moves or less!

      • Melvin

Don’t start cracking me up again. lol 😀

  64. LDS

He should have let Fairchild bat and bring Fraley in for Ramos. Would have left a better defensive alignment and better odds of a run.

    • Mark Moore

Good point, LDS. I think that would have been the case. Less disruption on defense as well.

    • Jim t

Ramos being a SH and a short bench I can see why he went the way he did.

      • LDS

Nope, 1B was open. Fraley has been hot. Fairchild was unlikely to hit into a DP – none so far this year. Worse case, Fairchild strikes out and no run scores. Fraley is still walked and the legendary Newman delivers the winning hit. Bell was out managed.

  65. Melvin

They just intentionally walked Mclain. haha

    • LarkinPhillips

To pitch to CES. Tough decisions there.

  66. Mark Moore

Is the Barrero in CF experiment over? Feel for Nick having to make that particular adjustment in the middle of a game. Wonder how Steer performs across the diamond as well.

    • JB

I’m thinking the Barrero experiment is over everywhere. Not sure why they don’t send him down. Right now it’s criminal why Newman plays as much as he does.

  67. Mark A Verticchio

Larkin talking about using Diaz today, glad he is not the manager. There is no way Diaz should pitch today and most likely not tomorrow, protect your investments.

    • JB

Exactly. Let’s ruin a few arms today.

    • Melvin

Yeah. I agree with that. It’s not the seventh game of the World Series.

  68. Dennis Westrick

Looks like the Pirates 4 game losing streak is gonna end this afternoon!

    • LarkinPhillips

I’m rooting for the cubs to lose so we can move up to tied for 3rd in division with a win today.

  69. Kevin H

Herget has impressed me in the short time he has pitched for the Reds. I do hope he sticks around.

    • Tom Mitsoff

      Agreed. He has performed well.

  70. old-school

Sadak and Larkin now ‘splaining away Friedl not playing. What a joke. This team could win if they had a full 26 man roster.

If Friedl wasnt available all series….then say that.
Reds didnt say that. Reds said Friedl wouldn’t start but would be available. Everyone here knew an oblique wasnt going to be ready in 48 hours. Reds just didnt have the intestinal fortitude to be definitive and commit to winning with the best 26 guys. Hopefully , someone finds a way. Luke Weaver deserves a win.

    • Melvin

I agree it would probably have been best to give Friedl rest on the IL with that type of injury. As far as letting everyone know about his status it was probably best strategy wise not to let the other team know for sure he wasn’t available.

      • Kevin H

David Bell said he wouldn’t be available after the injury happened, or at least that is what he implied. He said the hope was not to use him all weekend. I heard him talk on the pre-game Friday before start of the game.

I then questioned to self why Friedl wasn’t IL

      • Melvin

Yes. With an injury of that nature the chances are very good that he needs time on the IL.

      • Votto4life

I would beat the house that TJ will still end up on the IL.

  71. Dennis Westrick

The Reds batters have killed more worms today than a BASS fishing tournament!

    • Kevin H

OMG, hahahaha you are on a roll!! 😛

      • Dennis Westrick

Still have my day job though!

  72. LarkinPhillips

Bell had one bench piece to use today and he was intentionally walked. Now you have Casali or Barrero left on the bench. Playing short handed for no reason is dumb.

  73. old-school

Herget threw 10 pitches???? Reds are throwing this game and planning for Armageddon at Coors field.

  74. Mark Moore

And the new guy gives it up immediately. Apparently he didn’t get the memo about walking the first guy you face.

And then THAT boneheaded mess to get us out of a bike helmet situation.

  75. Mark A Verticchio

You can say what you want about Bell, but this has not been a well managed game.

    • Mark Moore

Bad situation in the bullpen. Short bench that got shorter and then weakened the defense. And a starting pitcher who twirled a gem but had to offer up maybe 40 more pitches than he should have (certainly 30 more).

I can’t blame it all on Handy DT Bell … but he’s not exempt today either.

BTW, if I recall correctly, a “strain” is a “tear” … even if it’s just a minor one. And Friedl won’t heal if he isn’t shut down to preserve himself.

    • Mark Moore

      From Bull Durham … “Lollygagging!”

  76. Dennis Westrick

This game is about to get away from the Reds! Only have to go back to the inning where they had the bases loaded with NO OUTS and scored only 1 run! Looking huge now!

  77. Old-school

Ramos looking great out there. Gives up the extra base. Thats (2) extras bases Ramos has handed the marlins today not to mention the inability to get a run in. What are the Reds doing??? Why is Ramos on this roster?

    • Dennis Westrick

Who knew Ramos was a Reds killer!

  78. JB

The pitching in AAA is horrendous outside a couple of guys. This is what worried me in bringing up some guys.

  79. LDS

3 hits and a walk with no outs recorded. Hint Bell, that’s when you take them out of the game.

  80. Steve Schoenbaechler

If no one has said it, I will. . .

I don’t care what the stats say, Newman committed 3 errors today. McLain plays the same positions, plus CF (going by baseball-reference). Their fielding is similar. Newman’s offense has only been good his second season in the bigs and last year. McLain has experienced very few bad seasons batting.

I have to think, the move to McLain is sooner rather than later.

  81. Bdh

Pulled Herget at 18 pitches because Bell needed the walk to the mound to help get some more steps in to hit his daily goal I guess

    • Dennis Westrick

I know how to hack a FitBit if Bell needs help!

  82. Old-school

David Bell literally threw a game. Plan was save the bullpen and let Ramos and Newman and third catcher have their day and only have to cover 8 innings on the road since they won the series already.

  83. JB

If Busenitz is closing out this game, fine. If he isn’t then Bell needs to get him out of there while it’s still close

  84. Kevin H

Rough way to impress your team. Now Herget in line for loss, unless Reds can comeback. Which they have been known to do.

  85. Votto4life

Glad the Red’s front office wasn’t foolish enough to pursue pitching during the off season.

  86. JB

Need another comeback here. At least the top of the order is up.

  87. Dennis Westrick

In my opinion, based upon Weaver’s performance today he should stay in the rotation as the No. 4 or No. 5 SP. The defense behind him was nothing short of atrocious!

    • Kevin H

I do believe I agree. Reds have 4 starting pitchers going forward. I do think Abbot, and Williamson will be up in near future or be counted on. Herget as well in my opinion in 7 games now he looks sharp.

      • Jim Walker

They don’t have 4 starting pitchers for the next 4 weeks (or exactly however long Lodolo is out. Bell apparently said about 4 weeks).

    • Votto4life

With Lodolo out for a month, Weaver is now #3.

    • JB

I think Weaver looked good the last two games. He has good stuff.

  88. JB

I hope Senzel stays healthy for the year. Really would like to see what he can do for a full year. I’m impressed so far

  89. VaRedsFan

So wouldn’t the move earlier to PH Friedl earlier as a bluff. See if they IBB walk him?
If they don’t, he can either bunt or be taken down.

If he’s not really going to be used, you could have used him that way.

    • Mark Moore

That would reset his IL clock (I’m assuming he’s tagged tomorrow and goes back to Cincy, not on to Denver). The best explanation I heard was that he plays with such intensity, he won’t hold back and will risk further injuring himself. Of course, that screams IL to me, but what do I know? 😮

      • Kevin H

That makes to much Sense Mark, I was gonna say you know nothing. However on here someone may think I was offending you. 😛

        hahahahaha

      • Jim Walker

Sorry I repeated you Mark. My threads are displaying a little crazy. Guess it is because I have silmutaneous active windows.

    • Jim Walker

Then they burn the back date time (up to 4 days) once he is put on the IL. 5 or 6 days becomes the full 10.

  90. Mark Moore

Look, guys … Grit is Handy as well 😀

  91. Mark A Verticchio

This was a game the Reds could have won, scoring only one with bases loaded and nobody out really hurt. Stephenson’s lack of contact is really alarming. This team needs a legit #4 hitter to win, can you say CES.

  92. docproc

Okay, Fraley—now is the time to show everyone—including your manager—that you can hit lefties.

  93. Beaufort Ref

I’m not sure what it is, but Stephenson looks really bad. His swing and misses aren’t even close.

  94. Ted Alfred

    Stephenson was four more just
brutal AB’s again today. Just not a fan and I don’t think he should be a part of the future of this team as they get better in the years ahead. Really hoping they don’t sign him to a long term contract.

    • Votto4life

I think TySteve is still feeling the effects of his injury. It’s probably going to be awhile before he is hitting the ball with authority again. Having said that, if the plan for him is to be a DH and part time catcher, I hope the Reds don’t extend him either.

  95. JB

That’s probably going to do it. Can’t see the bottom of the lineup bringing it home.

  96. Melvin

Well Fraley didn’t get a hit against the lefty but he at least put good wood on it.

  97. Dennis Westrick

Who are these relief pitchers Bell is sending out there today? Was there an open tryout from the local softball leagues?

    • Kevin H

Those two were signed in off season if memory serves me correctly. Herget too for that matter, however he is doing well.

  98. Mark A Verticchio

Beauort Ref: Man I was just talking about the same thing, his swings and misses aren’t even close and you usually can’t tell that much on T.V. I am beginning to think the team needs a strong defensive catcher with an average bat. With CES and Steer splitting time at first and dh in the future there may not be a place for Stephenson at least not the way he has looked on 2023.

  99. VaRedsFan

Ramos, Meyers, Newman, Maile….if they pull this out, get your playoff tix.

  100. Kevin H

Eye test, is Maile a good defense catcher. He was hitting well in limited time. Today not so much. I ask as I do wish they would go back to a extra player on bench not 2 catchers on the bench

  101. JB

You think Myers would swing at the inside pitch. His stance is set up to hit that. God knows he isn’t touching anything on outside of the plate

    • TR

If Myers batting stance has always been so far from the outside corner, unless he has usually tapped the outside pitch to rightfield, I’m amazed he’s put in 10 ML years with Tampa Bay and S.D. The sooner he’s gone from the Reds the better I’ll feel. I prefer Fairchild over Myers.

  102. Dennis Westrick

I have tempered my criticism of Bell as of late! He has been a miracle worker with the bullpen the past several games! However, his propensity to play Ramos and Newman is cause for concern! A sweep of this series was there for the taking today, especially playing a wounded Miami team! Guess we should be happy with a series win!

    • Kevin H

With limited bench and how the starting pitching has been with using a “opener” twice in 3 games. Yes, I say he has done well. One thing we as fans don’t know is, who is available and not available in bullpen on any given day.

Having a extra catcher on the bench in my opinion has hurt this team. Today’s game a perfect example of that. Friedl not available, and Casile on bench

  103. JB

Shows you how Bell feels about Barrero. Not even pinch hitting him for Maile

    • Melvin

Barrero either needs another team or another manager. Otherwise his career is in real jeopardy.

  104. Melvin

Six straight balls. If Maile swings here he should be “shot”. lol

  105. Dennis Westrick

With a man on and 2 outs in the 9th, THIS would have been the time to use Fraley!

  106. Rut

Gotta pinch hit for Maile there. Just bad management not to do that

    • Kevin H

Barrero or Casali were the two options,

  107. Votto4life

Hard to win games when you play shotty defense and have 4 #8 hitters in the line up.

  108. Bet on Red

well cant win them all, weaver had a good start at least

  109. Mark Moore

Once again, y’all make a game like this bearable. At least we took 2 of 3. And we get to face Chase Anderson out in RockyTopVille. So that’s something to look forward to.

    • Melvin

I’m sure you will have something good for dinner tonight anyway. 🙂

  110. Kevin H

    So positives today.

Weaver pitched well and if not for Newman from what I read he could of saved pitch count and went a inning longer.

Herget came in and looked good and in my opinion a keeper. Bracho came in and threw strikes and allowed no walks or hits.

To me Bell managed the game well, as he got his main bullpen guys a day of rest and Greene on the hill tomorrow.

    • Tom Mitsoff

Clearly the idea was not to use any of the bullpen regulars today due to overwork, and that is understandable considering the past few days. I’m glad Bell went for it yesterday and let today unfold however it was going to unfold.

      • Old-school

What about Fraley and Friedl regulars? How was the Righty lineup???!
Are Newman and Ramos regulars and part of the rebuild?

  111. LDS

Say what you will about this game: poor execution or poor management. Bottom line, Bell is event driven. He reacts instead of thinking ahead. Totally outmaneuvered on the Fraley move. But he got to shuffle players to new positions. And his handling of the relievers was lousy today.

  112. Mark A Verticchio

Let’s all be honest this team will not compete this year. Because of that by Mid June or sooner the following position players need to be gone; 1. Ramos obvious 2. Newman or send Barrero down 3. Fairchild he just isn’t that good 4. Maile or Casseli, Stephenson isn’t a good enough hitter to force his way into line up every day by carrying 3 catchers. Replace those four spots with CES, EDLC, Hopkins and Mclain. Another slight move is India to left field. For those that say you can’t do that in the middle of the season, Pete Rose to 3rd in May of 1975 and that team was a World Series contender, this team is not to say the least. Abbott must also come up as well. Good job by Weaver today.

    • Optimist

That’s way too much way too soon. Newman and Myers are clearly this seasons veterans to be traded at the deadline for prospects. They’ve performed below average so they’d get nothing now, and they won’t be released.

They should get rid of the 3 catcher set up, and perhaps McLain is ready for a call up. The rest can come up thru July and August (when they trade Myers/Newman). Abbott may get a spot start, but no need to rush that. Barrero should play more, and Fairchild has value and fills a bench/defense need.

There will be injuries and openings, and they need to let those take their course – forcing the issue doesn’t accomplish much.

  113. Dean

Bell punch hitting Farley in a situation where he would be intentionally walked was turning point of game. Idiotic.

  114. Erik the Red

Okay it is official Newman does not have his head in this game. He needs to be pulled during the game. He is dreadful today in the field. As a Manager you can let young players see an old timer not being held accountable. He has made Weaver throw an extra 15 pitches today.
