Derek Law

The Cincinnati Reds are going with a bullpen day once again, with Nick Lodolo back in Cincinnati having his leg checked out. Derek Law will be the opener this afternoon for the second time in the last three days.

So far this season Derek Law has struggled to throw strikes with consistency. Both lefties and righties are walking at a high rate against him. Lefties aren’t doing much else, though, hitting just .184 when he is on the mound. Right-handed hitters are hitting well across the board against him.

Sandy Alcantara

The reigning Cy Young Award winner isn’t out to a great start in 2023. Sandy Alcantara has an ERA of 4.53 on the season, but much of that comes from one bad – and it was real bad – start when he allowed nine runs in 4.0 innings against Philadelphia. In his most recent start he allowed two runs in 8.1 innings with nine strikeouts against the Chicago Cubs.

Neither lefties nor righties are doing much against Sandy Alcantara, but righties have found a little more success. They hit for a higher average and make more contact, but have walked at a lower rate. Lefties have hit for more power and walked more often, but they have made far less contact. For his career he’s been a little better against righties than lefties, but the difference is rather small.

News and Notes

Levi Stoudt called up, Kevin Herget sent to Triple-A

While Derek Law is starting today’s game, it looks like Levi Stoudt is going to be expected to pitch several innings. Scratched from his start last night in Louisville, Stoudt is now in Miami with the club and on the roster. Kevin Herget was the roster casualty in this move and is heading to Triple-A.

The City Connect uniforms are out

Good to see Kevin Newman is starting. I was worried that David Bell forgot he was on the roster.

    • CI3J

I agree. How could Bell possibly forget about his gritty, veteran slugger?

      FREE KEVIN NEWMAN!

    • Jim t

With Friedl out and Myers not playing well I have no issue with Newman getting the start.

    • Melvin

There’s not a whole lot of players to choose from at this point.

      Myers .200

      Newman .233

      Barrero .222

      Farichild .227

      Casali .171

      Ramos .224

Too bad there’s no one in AAA that could come up and help.

      McLain .346/.457/.714

  2. RedsGettingBetter

Is Senzel resting right now? The team needs to have the best hitters against Cy Alcantara but…

    • Sherri

Exactly…Senzel has been playing very well

  3. Jim t

Also it seems whenever we complain about Newman playing he gets a hit and drives in a run.

    • Doug Gray

I’ve checked his numbers and know that someone’s complained about him every day and this now seems to be mathematically impossible.

      • Jim t

Lol!! Have to agree with your MathDoug.

  4. CI3J

Also, I have to say: Those “City Connect” uniforms are U-G-L-Y.

It’s like if the late-90’s “black is cool” style meshed with the late 70’s “how many overlapping lines can we add to this design before we cause a seizure?” style.

And that “CINCY” logo? Bleh, anyone with a basic knowledge of Photoshop could knock that out in a few minutes without even trying.

    Epic fail.

    • Votto4life

I thought the whole idea behind the “City connect” uniforms was to connect the the team with the city?? I don’t see the connection at all with these unis.

      • Tom Mitsoff

My best guess is that they are trying to connect with a younger demographic.

      • Votto4life

I have lived in Cincinnati for 40 years and have never once referred to it as “Cincy”. I guess this is something a designer in Los Angeles came up with.

    • Trainradio

Agree. Very ugly. Certainly not usable for a day game. Why don’t the Reds connect with the city by playing winning baseball instead?

      • Jimbo44CN

I’m with you Votto, born and raised here, and have never once called it”Cincy”. Only heard that from people that did NOT live here.

    • DHud

I think they look pretty awesome.

Don’t like the weird C logo but I think the black lettering and numbers with the red and white outlook is sharp

    • MK

My 17 year old grandson texted me to tell me how great they were. Guess that is the generation they are going for.

  5. Bdh

Called it yesterday that Law would start. With Herget getting optioned for Stoudt today he really needs to go 5 innings regardless if he’s getting hit. Can’t ruin the pen going into a winnable game 3 matchup

  6. Tom Mitsoff

Newman is 3-for-9 career against Alcantara.

  7. LarkinPhillips

I’m probably in the minority, but I like resting Senzel the day after a night game and in middle of 20 straight games(?). He hasn’t been the most durable guy, so rest is a good idea every now and again.

    • Optimist

This plus Old School’s comment about Senzel’s splits this season – not good vs. RHP, let alone the Cy Young award winner. He’ll get in the game late as needed – this is not a Newman issue. It will bee very telling if they can keep this one close.

      • MK

Not a bad idea giving him a day off. Injuries always maintain some permanent weakness. Better to keep his as rested as possible and give those damaged areas some additional recovery Tim better 1 game than 1 week or month.

  8. LDS

Barrero & Fairchild starting 2 days in a row? Did someplace freeze over? Is Senzel injured or did Bell just need satisfy his mediocre journeyman fetish?

  9. JB

In the day of pitch counts and babying pitchers, Derek Law is starting his 2nd game in three days. The guy is a rubber arm. Who needs a five pitcher rotation. Lol

  10. Tom Mitsoff

I’ll be curious to see if Law is on a pitch count or if he goes through the full batting order before being replaced. One benefit of the “opener” is to give batters a look at a second pitcher on the second time through the order, reducing the unlikelihood of any pitcher on the team going through the order for the dreaded third time.

    • Optimist

Just 2 ip, even 1 2/3 if it is to be. Stack the relievers up front, let Stoudt go from the 4th on as long as he can.

  11. JB

Is it me or is Barrero falling for the down and away stuff again?

    • Tom Mitsoff

The eye test tells me that he swings at the majority of pitches that start in the lower part of the strike zone and then dip below the zone. That’s the out pitch against Barrero if I am pitching (and if I could throw it).

      • DHud

Out pitch? That’s the ONLY pitch against Barrero!

If I’m pitching against him I’m throwing literally nothing but slider down and away and I guarantee he’ll swing three times before he doesn’t swing four

If I’m the manager I’m telling my pitcher if you so much as even throw anything else I’m removing you right then and there

  12. DHud

    I’ve seen enough from Barrero

He will not cannot not swing at the slider down and away. Over and over and over. And it never works

    • Hanawi

Yeah. I was on board with giving him more time but I’m close to giving up at this point. Newman isn’t the answer either and cannot be blocking any prospects. Time to bring up McClain

      • JB

I’m not giving up on Barrero because the guy has talent. I would like to see the Front Office send him down like they did with Friedl last year. TJ went down and worked on some things and came back up and turned it around.

  13. Bdh

That 1-2 pitch was strike 3 there!

Down a reliever due to Lodolo not going to the IL it isn’t making sense to me why Bell couldn’t let Law finish the inning

    • Dennis Westrick

Why? Because he (Bell) can! Tinker that is!

      • MK

At what point does Johnson get any blame for pitching issues?

  14. Optimist

Stoudt will likely have pitch count issues – will be frustrating if he gets to the 5th and game is close.

    • Optimist

1 more from Stoudt and it is interesting – Farmer, Legumina and Sims for 4 ip if needed.

    • MK

Why should Stoudt have a short pitch count, he has been starting in AAA?

  15. Votto4life

    Miami’s defense has been impressive.

  16. JB

Not much hope in the lineup after Stephenson. Five out of the nine are high percentage outs. Not good.

  17. Indy Red Man

Stoudt completely reminds me of Disco. He’s got some talent if he can get it together

    • Tom Mitsoff

I’m with you. He has good stuff, just hasn’t mastered control yet.

  18. Mark A Verticchio

This is almost a give away game. Bell needs to let Stoudt pitch as long as possible. I don’t think this line up can score against Alcantra.

    • Votto4life

Such a shame with the Reds just 4 games out. I continue to be baffled why the front office didn’t make more of an effort to acquire another starter or two this past off-season.

  19. Votto4life

Wouldn’t be surprised if this game is already over.

    • Votto4life

I’ll show my way out now. Way to go Fraley!!!

  20. Mark A Verticchio

Thanks to Fraley I was happily wrong.

    • MK

He has been much better than Winker the last two years. Offensively and defensively.

      • Melvin

Yeah. I’d just like for him to shave that beard so we can see who he really is. 🙂

  21. Mark Moore

Been on audio only whilst running errands. Didn’t get to see Fraley’s bomb but it sounded sweet. At least we have the lead to work with now. Not a terrible outing from Stoudt.

Back on MLB.tv feed (wth WLW overlay, of course). Let’s Kick this Pig for another couple innings and head into Sunday with 2 W’s in our pocket.

  22. Kevin H

Listening to game on radio and I admit Brantley talking about Barrero having no idea where the inside corner was on pitches out-of strike zone. Then Barrero doubles and Brantly says better lucky than good. Yet other players who swing at balls today he has said nothing.

Another note, what a good game so far for Reds and their pitching staff

    • JB

I told you before , Brantley has absolutely nothing good to say about Barrero. If he does anything good he still critiques him in how he could have done better. Brantley is a hack.

      • Kevin H

Yes you have and now I am a believer. LOL

    • LDS

Guys like Brantley mistakenly believe that it’s all about themselves. I’d say the same about Bell. Unlike most of us here that rant, troll, complain, and so forth, we’re just fans blowing off steam, right or wrong in our opinions. Brantley, et al. has certain duties to perform. He was a pitcher and what he’s really saying is what he would have done and how he’d pitch Barrero. Criticizing Barrero is obviously acceptable to the organization. And once Barrero is gone, it’ll be a new target.

      • JB

Brantley reminds me of Marty is his last years of announcing. Just became bitter and to me had nothing good to say. Tired of listening to “The Cowboy” talk about Country Music, Chicken , ribs and Ice Cream.

      • LDS

I listen to very few sportscasters these days, or newscasters for that matter. I much prefer the days when the team’s announcers were actually pumped when the team does well. This phony, self-aggrandizing “analysis”, so popular in the media today, is simply BORING.

      • MK

Joe kept Marty in check. He was hard to listen to after Joe passed. I understand they had to widen the radio booth door to get his head in. Thrall has a hard time reigning in Brantley.

  23. JB

Looking at the 40 man there really is no reason for Kuhnel to be on the 40. Carrying a 6.50 ErA and 28 years old. Has done nothing to warrant a 40 man spot. Bring up McLain to play and drop Kuhnel. More than likely nobody is picking him up anyway. I mean bottom of lineup is weak at best

      • MK

Siani would be grabbed on waivers in a second.

    • Doug Gray

If you’re going to drop someone on the 40-man it’s got to be Ricky Karcher first and foremost.

  24. Dennis Westrick

I’m still in search of that long lost treasure! The written document that EVERY Reds RP MUST WALK a batter, usually in the first inning they pitch! Farmer the only exception so far but there’s opportunities ahead!!

Fortunately, so far in today’s game it hasn’t bit them in their backsides!

  25. JB

Someday that will be our De La Cruz with the bomb.

  26. Mark A Verticchio

I am afraid Bell is going to drain this bull pen which has been very good so far. It is time to bring Abbott up and Mclain as well with CES and EDLC to shortly follow.

    • Optimist

Yep – really only Legumina and Diaz (3 batter maximum) left today. Sims needs to get thru the 7th. A real tight rope they’re walking the next 2 weeks.

    • Kevin H

I thought Stoudt could of went a few more innings.

    • JB

They are definitely going to wear out this summer. The starters need to start pulling their weight and going longer. They really don’t need to start any of this opener crap with the many innings this bullpen has thrown already.

      • Kevin H

        Totally agree.

I feel too they need to get back to a 5 man rotation and figure it out.

      • Chris

Then tell Bell to stop pulling his starters at 80 and 90 pitches. No reason theses kids shouldn’t be going at least 110 pitches.

      • Doug Gray

Chris – no one is throwing 110 pitches in games anymore, at least with any sort of regularity.

  27. Dennis Westrick

Hate to say “I told you so!” but, Farmer issued his mandatory walk and Bell promptly replaced him with Sims!

    • Kevin H

You enjoy telling us so. Admit it. LOL

      Just kidding

      • Dennis Westrick

Just the facts! Kevin! Just the facts! And, yes I DO ENJOY pointing out the facts!

  28. DHud

One pitch from the second best reliever in this team

    • Kevin H

My guess is he pitched extra on I think Thursday?

  29. Kevin H

Not sure why they sent Herget down. Why not just Dl Lodolo and bring up a starter. Now the bullpen is gonna be gased heading to Colorado

    • JB

Just like the triple headed monster we call catcher is killing the bench with Friedl down. Just stupid.

  30. LarkinPhillips

Between the third catcher, Friedl, and Lodolo, the reds are playing three guys short purely by choice. Friedl and Lodolo should both be on DL. This stuff makes no sense. Especially with bells penchant to sub as often as possible.

    • LarkinPhillips

Using your second best reliever for one pitch against the other teams worst hitter is a really terrible strategy.

    • JB

Exactly what I said and this has been happening for the past few years. Just IL them for 10 and stop this nonsense

  31. Mark A Verticchio

Like I said Bell is wearing out his bull pen and before a trip to Colorado. I also don’t understand sending down Hergert. Gibaut is gassed, be lucky to get out of inning tied. Weaver is going to have to go at least 6 tomorrow.

  32. Mark A Verticchio

As well as Bell managed yesterday, he has stunk today, no reason to pull Sims after one pitch. Oh well another loss on Bell.

  33. Tom Mitsoff

We’ll see if the offense can come back again. Top of the order up.

    • Tom Mitsoff

Some luck there. Ball four was actually strike two.

  34. Melvin

What’s this Alcantar guy doing pitching in the eighth inning? That’s not allowed anymore is it?

  35. Mark Moore

Nice swipe by India. Let’s see if we can convert.

  36. Mark Moore

And Fraley comes through AGAIN!!! India’s swipe set that up in fine fashion.

  37. DHud

Ummm…what are we doing if this goes extra innings?

  38. Melvin

Fraley, whether a bloop or bomb or a seeing eye single gets the job done in the clutch. As a side note somebody better calm Sadak down now or his health could be at risk. lol

  39. CI3J

Fraley has fully come out of his slump and is back to hitting like he was late last year.

It’s really a shame he can’t hit lefties, though.

  40. Kevin H

Ramos comes through. Egg in my face. Lol

    • Mark Moore

      Fried, boiled, or scrambled?

In the end, we regain the lead.

  41. Melvin

Ramos got a big one there. Feel bad for that CF guy.

  42. Mark Moore

YIKES!!! Jazz is messed up out there. Hate to see that happen. Love the 2B for a run, but don’t like the injury.

MarlinFish will be very thin in the outfield tomorrow with the two injuries.

    • CI3J

He looks like he’s in serious pain. The replay showed his ankle got really jacked up on that curb at the bottom of the wall.

      • magi210

Amazed he walked off the field without help. Looks like a bad limp.

  43. Melvin

Why are they letting him walk back to the dugout?

  44. JB

Wow weird. Marlins don’t have two catchers still on their bench?

  45. Dennis Westrick

For what it’s worth, I believe the Marlins are 12-0 in one (1) run games this season!

In contrast, of the 21 losses the Reds have so far, ten (10) of those are 1-run losses!
If they had won 1/2 of those we would be leading the NL Central. Baseball is both FUNNY & CRUEL at times!

  46. Mark A Verticchio

Reds bring double A infielder up to Louisville, could that mean Mclain is coming to Cincinnati. He sure is needed.

    • Kevin H

Oh? Has McLain been pulled? Or De La Cruz, or CES?

Am I asking to many questions lol..

      • Melvin

Can’t find the Bat’s lineup yet for tonight.

  47. Dennis Westrick

And, I was just about to post a negative comment about Ramos! Then he drives in the go-ahead run!

    • Melvin

That’s right. So there. lol That’s his second hit of today….and he’s out of the game. haha Hopefully we don’t go extras anyway.

  48. Melvin

Wow. That was a strong throw from the CF guy. A few more seconds and it might have made it to home plate. lol

    • JB

Could have been like Curling where the infielders would sweep the grass in front of it and yell at the ball.

  49. Bet on Red

THis team sure does fight this season

    • Mark Moore

I’m still skeptical, but I’ll take what we saw there from him. And we know he plays a decent CF.

  50. Mark Moore

Mr. Peanut to hold them down … probably need a couple bike helmets here.

Nope … but we got one. Plus a shin burger.

  51. Kevin H

I do think it is fair to question why use Farmer so early. And to have Sims throw 1 pitch.

      • Tom Mitsoff

The batter smashed one back at Legumina that bounced off his right ankle. He recovered and threw the runner out, but had to be helped off the field.

    • Tom Mitsoff

If Legumina is hurt and goes on the IL, that might get Herget back up. They are going to need him.

      • Kevin H

Is he allowed Tom? Don’t they have to wait 10 day, or if a injury they can come right back?

        Not sure of the rule

      • Mark Moore

Kevin – they can bring him back if an IL stint is involved. Otherwise, it is a 10-day clock.

  52. LarkinPhillips

5 out save for Diaz? Weaver?

  53. CI3J

Man, what kind of game is this? They’re dropping like flies out there on both side.

      • Mark Moore

Plus headed to the Rocks … which can be challenging for starters to go deep into a game.

      • Melvin

Have to remember that if Abbott comes up it will help but he really has only been pitching about five innings so he’ll not likely go deep into a game. Won’t help the bullpen much.

  54. Optimist

Oh my – getting pretty squirrely.

  55. Mark Moore

Great focus by Steer to get that one and not run into Myers.

  56. Mark Moore

Got to get out of the 8th before you can think about the 9th. Nice job by Diaz do bear down and do just that.

Maybe Grit will insert Floro and we can pummel him in the 9th?

  57. Melvin

Casali to me doesn’t look like he has much left in the tank to play anymore.

    • Mark A Verticchio

Plus 100, Robinson needs to be given a chance.

  58. docproc

Over/under on how many times Larkin uses the word “conviction” in a game.

    • Mark Moore

Is that one of “his words”? I avoid Sadak if at all possible, so I don’t hear Larkin.

I find I like Thrall. Earlier comments noting that Cowboy may be heading toward being the “next Marty” which I can see at times. I’m not ready to go there just yet with him, but he does seem a little full of himself at times.

  59. Mark Moore

And it comes to this … a 1-2-3 inning would be greatly appreciated.

  60. Mark A Verticchio

Barrero does what Barrero does, he needs sent back down for his own sake. He strikes out 3 or 4 times a game and looks lost. He needs to play at triple A for a long time while Mclain comes up to man shortstop.

    • Beaufort Red

He needs a new position. Too many great players chomping at the bit. Has to be affecting his confidence. Timer to move on .

    • Mark Moore

His window was small and it seems to be closing quickly given the talent coming up.

  61. Mark Moore

    Well NUTS!

Got to get the next batter. Ignore the guy on 2nd for now.

    • Mark Moore

Can’t walk him there. Just CANNOT do that.

      And now he’s possibly hurt?

    • Mark Moore

Cowboy noted we didn’t see any fastballs there.

  62. LDS

That 1 pitch appearance by Sims is looming large now

  63. Mark Moore

Gift there with the batter violation. May put Diaz over the hump.

  64. JB

Car pool tomorrow coming out of Louisville

  65. Mark Moore

Put that one in the “miracle win” column. Wasn’t sure Diaz could bear down and pull it off, but he did just that.

  66. Melvin

Well it took Diaz 40 pitches but he got it done. We squeaked by another one. Dennis – What’s it look like in terms of games behind? 🙂

    • Dennis Westrick

Reds 3.5 games out of 1st place in the NL Central and only 1.5 out of a Wild Card spot!

    • LDS

Knocks Diaz out until at least Monday, probably Tuesday. Highest pitch count in ML career

      • Melvin

Yeah. It would have been worse if we hadn’t have won.

  67. TR

That’s the kind of games you want to win; plus a series win.

  68. Kevin H

    Nevermind. Lol

40 pitches, he isn’t going to pitch for 2 days

  69. Dennis Westrick

Gonna be a thin bullpen tomorrow with Diaz throwing 40 pitches and 6 other pitchers used. And, yes, Sims should be available if needed after throwing only (1) pitch today!

    • oklared

Actually, high multiday pitch count and was suggested may have some arm discomfort on broadcast

  70. VaRedsFan

    Marlins first 1 run loss….now 12-1

    • Dennis Westrick

Yep! I jinxed the Marlins by posting earlier that they were 12-0 in one (1) run games!

  71. Mark A Verticchio

If you are going to waste Diaz until at least Tuesday you might as well do it with a win.

Great win, despite questionable(barring injury) bullpen usage. Now use this inspirational win to get serious about winning this year. Several injuries can be DL’ed to bring up help. If Lodolo can’t go soon, DL, same with Freidl, looks like Legumina might need a stint on DL. Time to end the 3 catchers. Bring up Lively, McLain, another pitcher, German?,and Hopkins or CES. Bell can figure out where to play them, he’ll be in heaven with all the choices.

Need pitching help NOW! Maybe bring Herget back?

The qualifying criteria for Reds bullpen may soon be 1) Can you stand on the mound without falling off? and 2) Can you fog a mirror?

These two factors probably happen to many bullpens where the team does not have a designated 4th. and 5th. starting pitcher.

Going to be the Weaver/Lively show tomorrow probably.

Agreed! Hope Weaver can go 6 or 7 innings tomorrow!

It would be nice if Weaver could get it together. He reminds me from pictures of a real good Red’s pitcher in the 1930’s and 40’s, Bucky Walters, who, by the way, was a converted infielder.

I agree it’s time they give this team a chance to win this year. That means bringing up Abbott, Mclain as well as CES and EdlC asap. I also wouldn’t sleep on Hopkins and if you want to stick with three catchers Robinson might be one.

Weaver pitched very well against the Mets. No reason he can’t do it tomorrow. Keep it going and let’s get the sweep. This team has been fun to watch this year. They don’t give up. Hope the young guys are on the team real soon. Will make them even better.
