The Cincinnati Reds will do just that this evening as they welcome in the New York Mets to start a 3-game series at Great American Ball Park. The Reds will look to put Sunday’s embarrassing loss behind them. First pitch is set for 6:40pm ET.

Luke Weaver

After giving up five home runs in the first to starts of the season, Luke Weaver didn’t give up any the last time he took the mound. He still struggled, giving up nine hits and four runs in 4.1 innings.

We’re dealing with a sample size of just three starts, and none of them have gone well, but both lefties and righties are crushing Luke Weaver so far this season. Righties are hitting .344 against him with an OPS of 1.025. Lefties are hitting .294 and have an OPS against him of 1.016. For his career he’s pitched better against right-handed hitters, but the difference hasn’t been big.

Max Scherzer David Peterson

Max Scherzer was scratched from his start with neck spasms, so David Peterson is now stepping in to make the start. He’s pitched very poorly this season, posting an ERA over seven in his 30.2 innings pitched.

This season lefties and righties are both hitting well against Peterson. That shouldn’t be surprising given his ERA. The big difference is the left-handed hitters are hitting for massive amount of power against him so far this season, while right-handed hitters are hitting a bunch of singles and doubles.

News and Notes

Luis Cessa DFA’d, call ups from Triple-A

In a weird set of roster moves this afternoon the Reds designated Luis Cessa for assignment. They then called up two 32-year-old right-handed pitchers from Triple-A in Kevin Herget and Ben Lively. Reiver Sanmartin was placed on the injured list, creating the need for a second pitcher to join the club. We wrote about each of the moves here if you wanted some more information.

Hunter Strickland released

If you weren’t aware, Hunter Strickland had been pitching in Triple-A Louisville with the Bats this season. That is no longer the case as he has been released.

Isn’t the point if a batting order to get your best hitters the most at bats? Let’s put the guy hitting over .300 3 spots below a guy hitting under .200

  2. Dennis Westrick

Fairchild & Newman in today’s starting lineup! Awesome! Dis Barrero get kidnapped?

    • Old-school

Dennis c’mon. His turn to bring the juice boxes, man the Viking gear, and help keep the dugout tidy!

      • Melvin

haha Don’t start cracking me up again. 😀

  3. Bet on Red

Seems we are missing Schezer after all… lucky day… also dont understand the Cessa move, but GUESS WHO JUST GRADUATED LAW SCHOOL

    • old-school

If that means you graduated law school today…congrats!

      • Old-school

Can we sue the Castellini’s for malfeasance? Do we have a case? Asking for a friend? RLN may have some Gofundme financing.

  4. DataDumpster

The Mets, the big spenders. I would say 4 top pros in their S8, on balance not doing very well. A scratch in one of their top pitchers, who is also not lighting up the trees, leads to a guy who is just as bad as Weaver nearly twice over (in regards to innings).
Meanwhile, the Reds while impressing no one, are still back just 5 in the loss column to the top but still get only a 100-1 shot for the playoffs. Embarrassing for the team, David Bell, and the organization.
John Ring’s summer of ’73 piece shows how a very damaged roster on a very good team rose to greatness. Can a young, rebuilding team with a chip at least lead to respectability and hope for 2024? They did the Rangers but then faltered, why not restart with the Mets? Is it there? I like the talent but even without injuries, the team seems very unstable as managed.

  5. Dennis Westrick

Plus, facing another potential Cy Young pitcher in the Mets David Peterson with a pre-game ERA of 7.34!

Let’s try to score early & often so Weaver can settle in and pitch 5 or 6 low run innings!

  6. Mark Moore

That’s the way to start the game. Nice work by the boys.

    Now for the Hit Parade!

  7. Old-school

Sadak with a useful factoid. Senzel is top 5 in MLB hitting against lefties. Right on cue, Senzel rips a double to RF

  8. Dennis Westrick

Nice start by Weaver! Now, let’s get him some runs!

  9. old-school

Senzel and Stephenson create a run…This was how 2023 was envisioned to be in 2017.

  10. Old-school

Myers takes ball 4 for strike 2

    Robo umps please

    • renbutler

That’s one of the worst I’ve ever seen in 40 years of watching baseball, no hyperbole.

  11. Mark Moore

Myers got robbed just a bit there. But at least we scored and ran up Peterson’s pitch count.

  12. Dennis Westrick

Left ducks on the pond! Again! Gotta put the ball in play! Hard to score when you strike out unless there’s a wild pitch or passed ball!

  13. Mark Moore

Glad we got that out after the HP and 1B Chumpire both squeezed us on the same pitch.

  14. Mark Moore

Another good inning from Weaver, including contributing with a glove.

  15. Old-school

But Friedl is a lefty? he cant hit lefties.

    • SteveAreno

We have seen that from Newman several times. Keep up the good work.

  16. Dennis Westrick

Hopefully, we can get into the Mets bullpen early!

    • VaRedsFan

Why?? I’d rather face a struggling starter.

    • earmbrister

With Peterson struggling to throw strikes and at 63 pitches thru 2 IP, it’s a reasonably safe bet that we’ll be getting in to the Mets BP early

      Good start to the game!

  17. Old-school

Nick Senzel is supplying 2 major league skills . Good third base defense and elite hitting against lefty pitchers.
TJ Friedl needs to play against lefty pitchers too.

TJ friedl against a lefty pitcher got a hit, stole a base and created runs.

See how many bunt hits he can get. See how many steals he can get. See how many runs he can score. See how many hits he can get. see if he can win a batting title. #freefriedl

    • Jim t

I think he will get more bats against lefties. Tonight was a start.

  18. VaRedsFan

Per Sadak: EDLC 118 MPH double tonight.

    • Melvin

He just homered too. 2-2 so far with a walk

      • Melvin

Looks like another one. Two HR and a double. I think he’s looking to pass up McLain and CES. haha

  19. Dennis Westrick

At least Weaver didn’t walk a batter ahead of the HR allowed which is usually the case!

  20. docproc

Plate umping is some of the worst I’ve ever seen. Balls 6-8 inches off the plate are getting called strikes.

  21. old-school

Mets might be asking Krall what A pitcher you want for Cessa. We got issues. Lets do this.

  22. VaRedsFan

I’ll never understand why an ump sits up on the inside corner instead of right down the middle (with his nose splitting the point of the plate)

  23. Mark Moore

Weaver a solid 5 innings. Would love to pile on here.

  24. Bet on Red

Myers might havecost us a DP there

    • Dennis Westrick

Still early and Tinker Bell is pacing in the dugout just waiting on making those switches he’s famous for!

    • Indy Red Man

Wow. Superior performance tonight. Weaver has them in swing mode once they realize being choosy equals 0-2 or 1-2. Offense is flowing as well. This kind of feel good game might start a little heater!

  25. Mark Moore

That’s a gift if it doesn’t get overturned.

    Buck is done regardless.

    • Bet on Red

a gift that kept on giving…. runs

    • Mark Moore

Major gift for the good guys. HUGE!!

  26. Kevin H

Maile isn’t doing bad in his limited playing time

    • SteveAreno

Luke Maile with a strong double and batting .296 now. Awesome!

    • Kevin H

They gotta call these guys up soon don’t they?

    • Ted Alfred

Yep and 5hey just just said all three balls were hit 117 mph or higher, which has never happened in the history of Major League Baseball???…holy cow

  27. Old-school

Friedl can win a batting title and score a 100 runs.
India can score a 100 runs and get on base at .360

    These 2 guys can hit.

  28. Melvin

Well I’m going to go out on a limb and say Friedl is hitting pretty well again tonight. Two hits and a hard line out to RF. Some against a lefty even. 😉

  29. Ted Alfred

How about TJ frickin’ Friedl?? The Reds have not had a spark plug like this in a long time and it’s so fantastic to have that again. Just adds so much juice to the lineup. I can’t get over how much he reminds me of Lenny Dykstra when he was in his heyday leading those really good Phillies teams

  30. Dennis Westrick

Would be nice to get one (1) more inning from Weaver tonight to give our bullpen a rest!

  31. Mark Moore

Productive inning. Get Weaver through the 6th and keep the pressure on the Metropolitans.

  32. Dennis Westrick

Maybe avoid giving Alvarez anything to hit?

    • HoF-13

Both times he homered, on the previous pitch a clear strike was called a ball. Have to wonder if that changed the ultimate outcome.

  33. Optimist

Have been away for an hour – Weaver doing it tonight – 3 hits, 2 hr, 6ip, 74 pitches – dare he pitch the 7th?

    • Optimist

No, the answer is no, don’t do it. Don’t have to bring in a reliever with men on base. No.

  34. Kevin H

Reds face Justin Verlander tomorrow. Dude is 40 years strong.

  35. Indy Red Man

Sadak needs to relax. I like to hear the crowd when we’re playing well, but he’s tiring

  36. JB

Mets announcers saying the Reds have the best statues of players in front of the stadium. Nobody comes close

    • Ted Alfred

I agree and it seems like Larkin has to be getting annoyed with his constant chattering and laughing and over the top comments that are just never ending about everything

    • VaRedsFan

The ballpark tour is worth it for those that haven’t done it. They speak about the statues. The Rose statue is incredible on how it was built.

  37. Bet on Red

I like Weaver in here, 7-3 is still a margin, but get the BP going

  38. Kevin H

A 360 foot homerun LOL.. Band Box does it again, lol

For the record I like GABP, as it is a nice park, however move the fences back a tad

    • Kevin H

Law has been pitching well as of late.

  39. Mark Moore

Anyone else hear Cowboy’s theory on why pitchers struggle in the 7th or beyond? Interesting take. Mostly mental.

  40. Daytonnati

Maybe we can double-up Tommy Boy.

  41. Dennis Westrick

And Law issues the mandatory walk! At least it was after the HR!

  42. Dennis Westrick

Why not let Weaver at least start the 7th?

    • Dennis Westrick

My bad! Weaver did start the 7th! Not watching the game but following the box score on ESPN!

  43. Dennis Westrick

We can’t possibly blow a 7-1 lead, can we?

  44. Daytonnati

Okay, could have been a lot worse.

    • Kevin H

I retract my Law statement. Whew. Lol

  45. Dennis Westrick

Better get Diaz warmed up! DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT wait until the 9th inning Bell!

Pirates down 10-1 in the bottom of the 8th against the Rockies! We need this win!

    • Kevin H

Diaz and Farmer? Or Farmer and DiaZ?

      Young?

  46. Kevin H

Any word on Fraley and his back issue?

    • Indy Red Man

Day to day, play short-handed, and eventually DL him anyway. You must be new here))

      • Kevin H

Beg your pardon. No need to be a jerk

      • Indy Red Man

Joking around. Sorry because you don’t know my intent

  47. Indy Red Man

Weaver deserved better, but hopefully will get the win. I stand by what I said that he’s fairly talented for a 4th-5th starter. He’s gotta get the ball down though

    • VaRedsFan

Even when Arroyo was old he would occasionally throw a good game…Weaver can only be a 5th guy on the Reds right now.
      The bar is low.

  48. Mark Moore

Bullpen not helping itself tonight 😮

  49. JB

Young has been terrible in May. I think that’s 5 runs he has given up.

  50. Bet on Red

I dont know why it wasnt sims 8th, diaz ninth

    • J

Too obvious. Bell doesn’t earn his money by making the obvious moves. Anyone could do that.

  51. Mark A Verticchio

Sims should have started the inning, Young has not pitched well lately at all. Bell needs to learn how to read the situation better.

    • VaRedsFan

But the 1st guy was left handed (HBP)

  52. VaRedsFan

Mclain goes deep in the 9th….Bats still lose

    • VaRedsFan

Correction…Bats win on walkoff walk by EDLC!

  53. Votto4life

Well when I left home for a night out with my wife the score was 7-1

  54. Mark Moore

Oh those base on balls. Always add to the angst.

  55. old-school

I dont like the collective “bullpen” is or isnt doing well. Its individuals.

Derek Law isnt a major leaguer. He shouldn’t be in any bullpen.

  56. Indy Red Man

Win or lose Bell is on point tonight. Could only get 1 lefty vs lefty out from Young and Sims couldn’t get either of 2 righties so you go to your horse for 4 outs

    • Kevin H

Nothing wrong with Bell’s moves tonight. Pitchers are the ones not coming through

      • VaRedsFan

I think that’s exactly what he said

    • Daytonnati

First pitch to Tommy Boy down the middle at the knees. Ball 1.

  57. Kevin H

Diaz should of struck him out. Another missed strike call by the ump

  58. Mark Moore

Trying not to let Tommy Boy beat you, and he beats you, just smaller.

  59. HoF-13

This is the worst called game for balls/strikes I’ve ever seen.

  60. JB

Bullpen has been smokin in the dynamite room all game

  61. Mark Moore

    WHEW!

Really need an add-on or 2 hear. I mean REALLY.

  62. Daytonnati

Take ’em any way you can get ’em.

  63. J

Home plate ump almost seems to be trying to make some sort of point. Maybe along the lines of “I can do anything I want back here, and nobody can do a thing about it.”

  64. Mark Moore

Look, folks … a Fraley sighting.

  65. Bet on Red

Hey anyone with MLB. com subscriptions might be able to get some money, evidently they may have been sharing privacy data.

    • Mark Moore

Ooooo … have to keep my eye out for that.

  66. Mark Moore

They man is a magnet for that stuff!

  67. Dennis Westrick

If our RPs don’t give up a walk, the issue a HBP! And, as usually the case, followed by a HR!

  68. Dennis Westrick

The Reds have left a small village on the bases tonight! Would have been nice to score another run or two!

  69. Mark Moore

That was probably ball 4 … but at least that bad call broke our way.

And the nail-biter goes our way.

  70. Bet on Red

Great job by Diaz, good job by Weaver. Can’t wait for the Verlander Greene matchup tomorrow

  71. Mark Moore

14K attendance on a Tuesday evening. That’s a little better.

    • Daytonnati

Probably 50% wearing blue, plus bark in the park, they may have been counting dogs.

  72. J

Sadak informs us that Diaz has already had some “iconic moments” with the Reds. He’s definitely been a good pitcher, but I think we’ll have to agree to disagree on the definition of “iconic moments.”

    • Mark Moore

C’mon, man … it was the 9th inning and even Sadak starts to run out of words … 😀

      • J

Disagree. Games used to routinely go 3+ hours and he rarely even paused to take a breath. He had another hour’s worth of material ready to go, minimum.

      • Mark Moore

True on that, J. I never listen to Sadak anyway and I do doubt he would ever run out of words, even at the pace he burns them.

    • SteveAreno

He’s had seven iconic moments and we are grateful

  73. old-school

Game threads are fun but a complete up and down.
@ GMR. You are always a Monday morning QB.

    Why not play on Sunday?

    Yes…you lose sometimes…but it’s fun.

  74. VaRedsFan

What a job by Diaz tonight.
Some saves are better than others.
This one right up there at the top.

  75. Dennis Westrick

I can breathe again! Nice win! Happy for Weaver to get his first win this season!

Let’s give Verlander a proper Queen City welcome tomorrow!
