Hunter Greene

In his first two starts of the year Hunter Greene allowed five runs in 8.0 innings, walked six batters, and allowed 10 hits. In the four starts since he’s allowed four runs in 20.0 innings on 19 hits and five walks. He’s only allowed one earned run over his last three starts.

This season has seen the splits for Greene as extremes. He’s pitched very well against lefties, who have a .179 average against him and a .574 OPS. Right-handed hitters are finding much more success. They’ve hit .339 with an OPS of .885 against him. They haven’t hit any home runs, but they have picked up plenty of singles and doubles along the way. Last season righties also hit better off of Greene than lefties did, but not nearly to this extreme.

Lance Lynn

Over the previous four seasons, Lance Lynn has had an ERA under 4.00. This season, though, he’s had a very tough start and his ERA currently sits at 7.16. He’s striking out a good number of hitters, but he’s given up tons of homers and walked more than his fair share of batters.

This year it’s been left-handed batters that have been crushing the ball against Lance Lynn. They have an OPS just over 1.000 and have six home runs in 60 at-bats against him. Right-handed hitters have been solid, but nothing stands out from that side of things this season. In the previous two seasons lefties also hit Lynn better, but not by nearly as much as they have so far in 2023.

News and Notes

Wil Myers is back, but isn’t

Big night on the farm

Thursday night was a great time to sit around and watch some minor league baseball games. While there were some big things that happened in the Dayton doubleheader and in Chattanooga, it was the game in Louisville that had two of the biggest things go down. Matt McLain hit for the cycle but somehow that was overshadowed by Christian Encarnacion-Strand hitting three home runs. The Bats held on to win that game 12-10. We wrote about it this morning and have video of all of the action if you want to check it out.

Home town cooking

The Cincinnati Reds have been real bad on the road, going 4-12. But when they are at Great American Ball Park they’ve played well, going 9-6 in front of the home crowd.

I burned my Apple TV one timer last year to watch the reds so I am following peripherally. Those watching give an extra detail on what happens. Love to see the Reds ahead of the Cards and Cubs aren’t Juggernauts either. Winnable series. Catch the Cubs and keep the Cards where they belong.

Bold prediction #1- Matt McLain starts at SS Tuesday
Bold prediction #2 -Andrew Abbott starts on Mother’s Day.

    Go reds.

    • Jim Walker

Do you have more than 1 email address? Just asking. 😉 I have heard tell that some rascals have more than 1 Apple (or Google or whatever) account. Now whether a person’s IP address or some such would get cross checked and cause refusals, I cannot say.

  2. Mark A Verticchio

It has to be time for Mclain, Bell won’t start Barrero and Newman is not the answer. CES should come up with him to play first base and DH.

    • CFD3000

If Bell isn’t going to play Barrero (which is RIDICULOUS) then Matt McLain please. Newman is a waste of roster space. Free Jose (or at least promote McLain).

      • LDS

Trade Barrero to a real team. Dodgers would likely be thrilled to have him. And would likely start him. I’m sure they’d send some cash Krall’s way. That all that matters.

      • Melvin

I wouldn’t be a bit surprised if Barrero is traded soon.

      • CI3J

Bell obviously PERSONALLY doesn’t like Barrero, for some reason. Maybe he thought he was too cocky.

But yes, if Bell isn’t going to play him, trade him. Let Barrero become the next Edwin Encarnacion, who Jerry Narron also seemed to dislike personally.

  3. Dennis Westrick

As I posted yesterday, while the Reds were enjoying their day off, ALL of the other teams in the NL Central Division LOST today!

Time to start a new winning streak!

  4. Mark Moore

I’ve decided to just do the WLW audio feed tonight. I don’t want to create another streaming account, even a freebie trial, for a single game. Just isn’t worth it to me.

So Thrall and Cowboy it is for tonight’s Pig Kicking Extravaganza!!!

Anybody seen Jose? Asking for a friend … 😮

    • Jim Walker

I was surprised to see that Apple is “only” $7 a month; and, apparently, they go by days and not hard calendar months. So, a person can drop in and out easily. $7 bucks isn’t bad for even one game let alone if a team has several in a 30 day interval.

I think it is just the principle of it that rankles. I hope Manfred is able to pull it off and MLBTV becomes the focal point where we can buy a full subscription and they figure out in the back room who gets what and take care of routing the money.

      • Mark Moore

        +10,000

It’s only impacting us tonight and on June 2nd. I can skip those two for audio only. I have no idea who the TV broadcast team will be, but it’s not a big deal for me. I’d rate my indifference about 75% principle about another platform ID and 25% other.

      • Jim Walker

I’ll be switching from my Windows all in one PC to my iPad at about 7:15 EDT. That could get interesting. I have Edge on the iPad because my password manager works across devices. I hope the iPad doesn’t force me to use an Apple app or even worse Safari ;-(

      • Jim Walker

Took me 20 minutes to get signed in on the iPad. Thankfully nothing big happened in the game.

Edge authenticated me into Apple TV but the hardware forced me to switch to the official app. Therein the issue. My wife’s account is primary on the iPad and I had to get it unconnected from the Apple TV app to switch to mine. Not at all clear or intuitive like Apple claims to be

  5. Old-school

Charlie goldsmith with a votto update. Sounds like hes not far off. Several quotes supportive of franchise at every level helping him

With myers coming back and Votto ramping up and Stephenson in limbo… i wouldnt bet on CES coming up anytime soon

  6. Dennis Westrick

Another HOF lineup for the Reds offense tonight! Again, the Reds should be familiar with Lance Lynn as an OLD Cardinal SP!

Let’s go Reds! Score early & often and give Hunter Greene a lead to work with for once with!

  7. VaRedsFan

    Greene off and running.
    3 pitches….K

    • Old-school

      Thanks VA

      Beautiful night

So eating on the deck and following on RLN

  8. Old-school

    Philly cheese steaks!

    Cincy weather is amazing today!

    • VaRedsFan

Double thumbs up….for the food and the weather

  9. VaRedsFan

25 pitches thru 2 for HG. 1 infield hit allowed.

  10. Dennis Westrick

Again, the SOs are nice but I would like to see Greene go 7 innings tonight!

    • Melvin

Right about now I’d like for him to think about a double play ball. Like you I want him to pitch well into the game.

      • VaRedsFan

Is it Greene’s fault that they swing and miss.
        actually it is.

  11. Dennis Westrick

For what it’s worth, the ChiSox have the same record as the Cardinals at 10-22!

  12. Melvin

45 pitches through 3. We can live with that.

  13. VaRedsFan

    6 K’s 45 pitches thru 3. Very sharp. 1 walk to Andrus.

  14. Votto4life

Wife and I are at the game hoping for free Pizza!

  15. JB

White Sox swing at everything. Benintendi had no chance with those high fastballs.

  16. VaRedsFan

If ever there was a time for a bunt….Maile should have been tapped for the task.

  17. VaRedsFan

TJ hits the chalk for 3 bags!!! 1-0

  18. Melvin

Friedl a triple. Best hitter we have right now.

    • VaRedsFan

      can’t believe they overturned that.
Reds have the worst luck on replays.

      • Melvin

At least it’s a double and an RBI

    • Melvin

Yeah. He might be a keeper even when all of the sorting is done.

  19. VaRedsFan

Umps are miked up….except when there’s an argument.
Which is the exact time I’d like to hear them!!

  20. old-school

Looks like Greene doing great. They should sign that guy!

  21. VaRedsFan

Two great oppo hits for Steer and Steve

  22. Melvin

Haha Fraley has had like three little dunks in left field lately for RBIs. Getting the job done.

  23. Mark Moore

Back from my walk. Heard the first run and now the second. Nice string of hits, even if they weren’t blasts.

  24. Melvin

Alright Senzel for an RBI. He’s been cooling off a bit lately.

  25. Mark Moore

Rally killing GIDP, but at least we plated a couple.

    • Dennis Westrick

How many of those have we seen this season?

  26. Dennis Westrick

Back-to-back singles yielded by Greene to start the top of the 5th inning! Greene needs to buckle down!

  27. JB

That was a bullet Greene threw to Senzel. Senzel was smiling at Greene

      • Kevin H

SMH… I know Reds hit them too, just frustrating. lol

  28. VaRedsFan

Up and in pitch too….GABP Special.

I had just dropped the Andrus bum from fantasy roster.

  29. Mark Moore

New game but we get one more inning if we need it. Time to resume the Crooked Number Parade.

  30. Dennis Westrick

The good news is that Greene may last 7 innings tonight!

  31. VaRedsFan

    India leaves the surly bonds!!!
    105 mph

  32. Votto4life

Maile adds absolutely nothing offensively to this team. He can’t even help his team by taking a pitch.

    • Dennis Westrick

But we need 3 catchers right? Ty Steve is the only one who has the ability to hit!

      • Votto4life

But we need Tyler Stephenson as DH or at 1B where he is solidly below average.

  33. Dennis Westrick

    That’ll do India! That’ll do!

  34. Melvin

India with a HR. He and Friedl are good at the top of the order.

  35. Votto4life

India’s bomb was a major league home run, unlike the cheap one the King of Rock and Roll hit at the top of the inning.

  36. Dennis Westrick

May get a good look at the ChiSox BP tonight with Lance Lynn at 80+ pitches already thru the bottom of the 5th inning!

  37. Kevin H

Even when Reds hit the wall scraper homeruns I find it annoying. I do wish they would move fences back just a tad.

    • Mark Moore

Or raise them. Or both. Either way, it’s not like you are taking away seats that get occupied.

    • VaRedsFan

      Oriole wall adjustment….great success.

  38. Kevin H

If Greene walks Vaughn Bell will take him out I bet

  39. VaRedsFan

What a great HR saving catch by TJ

  40. Melvin

Friedl might get arrested for stealing that HR. 🙂

  41. Mark Moore

I suppose I’ll need to find that highlight to watch. Nice work by TJ.

  42. Melvin

Hey JB. Is Friedl legit? 🙂 What do you think?

  43. Votto4life

Yelp…that David Bell is some manager

  44. JB

India didn’t even get out of his crouch and turn around on that homer. No doubter

  45. Dennis Westrick

Greene, with 2 HRs and 5 runs allowed and nearly 100 pitches, will, once again, NOT make it into the 7th inning!

  46. VaRedsFan

1st HR’s allowed since opening day.
    That was no cheapy

  47. JB

Greene really needs a third pitch. They have figured him out third time through

    • Kevin H

He has a fastball, Slider, and Change up.

Brantley was saying how he was using the pitches today with command. Well not this inning though lol

      • JB

He doesn’t use the change up very often. I don’t get it. He could be a beast if he uses it more. Go through this every game with him not using his change up.

    • VaRedsFan

      correct.
He throws the changeup some….just not enough.

  48. Mark Moore

Weather must be improving with these balls flying out of the park. Of course, “flying” doesn’t really apply to what Andrus did.

  49. Kevin H

So What do you all think, why not let Greene face on more batter. Have someone start a clean inning?

    • VaRedsFan

I think it was time….Some hard hit balls last 2 innings…(not Andrus).
I agree with Bell for a change

    • JB

Because he is getting rocked. Would have been three homers if it wasn’t for Freidl. Who is legit.

    • Votto4life

Greene really had lost it a few batters before the Roberts home run. I have no idea why our manager wasn’t able to see it.

      • Kevin H

Interesting observation. I just follow along lol

  50. Mark Moore

Greene’s night is done and he’s still looking for his first W this season. Them’s the breaks, or so I’m told.

  51. Dennis Westrick

For me, Greene is NOT the ACE of this 2023 pitching staff! That title currently resides with Ashcraft! Another outing of less than 6 innings completed! Can’t figure him out! Yes, he’s young and will hopefully improve yet this year!

Only one (1) walk by Greene tonight, so that’s something!

    • Mark Moore

Two steps forward, one step back I’m thinking. He’ll be fine ultimately.

    • Kevin H

I have said this already, however I get frustrated with the cheap homeruns. I mean 356ft. To what left center? or straight away left, at any event that is just a routine fly ball.

He was cruising along and bam. As Mark said he will ultimately figure it out.

    • VaRedsFan

Ace is just a label. Means nothing.
Aces only matter if you are a playoff team.

  52. JB

I think Ramos is showing up now for what he is. Hopkins time?

    • VaRedsFan

the shine is wearing off a little

  53. Dennis Westrick

For those paying attention, we are losing to a 10-22 team at home!!! Time to buckle down and score some runs! Trying to figure this team out hurts my 70-year old brain!

  54. VaRedsFan

16 walks in 6 games for Lynn.
    0 tonight.

    • Dennis Westrick

Of course! Points out the Reds wholesale lack of plate discipline!

      • VaRedsFan

or their pitcher was throwing strikes.
We haven’t been fishing much tonight.

  55. Melvin

Good hit by Maile there. haha. It’s not often you see a catcher miss a fair ball pop.

  56. VaRedsFan

    Andrus…natural SS.
    1st time playing 2nd.
    Diving stop and throw.

I guess “natural position” only applies to Reds

      • VaRedsFan

If you’re a good player…doesn’t matter where you play.

    • JB

I would have never guessed he has 2000 hits

    • Mark Moore

Cowboy’s comments on Andrus and that play said it all. He just showed why he’s still playing despite hitting a buck-fifty or less.

    • Kevin H

I disagree with that VA, as that suggest the Reds don’t have good players and we know they do. As Jeff Brantley said in regards to Stephenson, It isn’t as easy as it looks playing first base.

Or any position, for that matter.

      • VaRedsFan

Well catcher is unique and doesn’t really apply to my statement.
Do i need a asterisk for catchers?? LOL
FYIY Ty hasn’t looked awful at first.

  57. Votto4life

Tying run at first base in Luke Maile. But hey no need for a pinch runner. Not like you carry three catchers or anything.

  58. LDS

Isn’t it time for Fairchild to pinch run?

    • LDS

Wow it was. So now Casilli and Fairchild done?

      • Kevin H

Maile, Casilli replaces Maile. yes fairchild done

  59. Kevin H

Analytics must of told Bell to do that. yet another example of why

    • LDS

Absolutely. And the way Newman is hammering the ball. Manager of the Year.

  60. Mark A Verticchio

They really need to rally, hate to lose this game and set up a bad feeling for this series.

  61. Dennis Westrick

Farmer with a scoreless 8th! That, in and of itself, is a miracle!

  62. Mark Moore

Facebook feed just posted the Friedl web gem.

  63. Votto4life

The Reds just don’t have anyone in the line up that opposing pitchers fear. Hopefully CES, EDLC or McClain will be those guys. Right now it’s a line up of #7 place hitters.

    • TR

Call on the farm system and bring up the youngsters. Change is needed. Time to go the Tampa Bay way.

  64. LDS

White Sox needs to bring in Billy Hamilton. Give Roberts a rest.

  65. Mark A Verticchio

Two guys that look lost, among others, are Steer and Stephenson. You are correct that none of the current hitters strike fear into anybody. There is no reason for CES and Mclain to not be on this team.

    • VaRedsFan

Ty is on the strugglebus for sure

  66. JB

Well here we go. Somebody gets on , Newman will get up. Can’t wait.

  67. Kevin H

Routine fly ball turns into a 3 run homerun. Band box of a ball park strikes again.

    Tuff luck Greene

    • VaRedsFan

      Agree Kevin…
      99mph…high and inside…off the plate.
Don’t know how he hit it

  68. Melvin

So much for looking forward to facing the White Sox.

  69. Dennis Westrick

Smart teams figure out a way to win! Dumb teams find ways, often unique, how to lose! Wonder which one we are?

  70. Mark Moore

Tough night to say the least. Glimmers of hope that got shattered along the banks of the Ohio.

But you know I’ll be back. I’m just that kind of guy. Night, all.

  71. Dennis Westrick

Greene still winless! And, the Reds wasted an opportunity to pick up a game on the Pirates who lost this evening!

Disappointing doesn’t begin to describe it!

  72. William

Good news: The Reds have a fun team coming together. It just takes some patience to wait for several of them to arrive. The Reds are on a turtle clock.
