Nick Lodolo

Lodolo had a strong start to the 2023 season, which included a start against the Phillies where he allowed no runs and three hits with 12 strikeouts in seven innings. His last two starts, however, haven’t been as great. He allowed eight runs in 4.2 innings against the Rays and six runs in four innings against the Rangers. He’ll look to get back on track against the A’s today.

Home runs has been what has hurt him so far in 2023. Last year, he pitched 103.1 innings and allowed only 13 home runs. He’s already given up nine home runs in only 25.2 innings this year. If you’re looking for some good news though, he’s still striking out batters at almost a 30 percent rate and his walk rate is down to 7.2% at this early part of the season (It was 8.8% in 2022).

Ken Waldichuk

Oakland will start another lefty when Ken Waldichuk takes the mound this afternoon. The 25-year-old rookie was drafted by the Yankees in 2019 and made his MLB debut on September 1, 2022. Nine home runs and 11 walks in 25.1 innings pitched leads to a 7.82 ERA for the young pitcher. It’s been a little bit of a roller coaster ride to the start of his big league career and 2023 for Waldichuk. He had a very good start against the Cubs earlier this month (0 runs on five hits in five innings), but then followed that with a start in which he gave up five runs on six hits in 5.1 innings against the Angels.

News and Notes

Fernando Cruz placed on the injured list

The Cincinnati Reds placed reliever Fernando Cruz on the injured list prior to today’s game with a right shoulder strain. His velocity is down a little bit this season, though that may or may not be related. Cincinnati also activated Graham Ashcraft from the bereavement list, getting them back to 26 players on the active roster.

Henry Ramos and the Reds 5-game winning streak

The Reds haven’t lost a game since calling Henry Ramos up from Triple-A. He’s certainly been a spark to an offense that had been struggling, hitting .412/.524/.529 with just one strikeout while starting all five games.

Tough night on the farm

There were some real clunkers down on the farm on Saturday, but there were also some good performances on the individual front. Blake Dunn, who has already homered again today, had another big game for Dayton. Alejo Lopez picked up two hits for Louisville and he pitched a shutout inning of relief. Elly De La Cruz also picked up his first homer of the season.

Today’s stat of the day. Alexis Díaz has been good.

A left hander starting for the Oakland A’s, and David Bell rolls out his platoon of right – handed mediocrities.
India sits (slump, scheduled “rest”?), and Newman plays second.
Friedl sits (left handed), so Senzel is in CF and Reynolds plays third.

This is the David Bell motif, his pattern of play. His MO, his modus operandi.
I will say, although Casali is no real offensive threat, he may get a better game out of Nick Lodolo than he has been dealing lately.

    • Chris

This is the sort of thing Dusty used to do on Sundays. Didn’t matter if the team was on a losing streak or winning streak; Sunday’s were the day he chose to play his whole bench. What a joke. Way to kill the momentum.

    • SteveAreno

Kevin Newman led the team in RBIs (2) and played excellent defense at SS. Not sure why there is constant whining and complaining.

  2. Melvin

Well, being the true fan that I am. Here’s hoping the “questionable” guys that are playing today have career days and we win big. 🙂

  3. Mario

Like others in the previous article, I don’t love the lineup. Hope they have some hits in those bats today. Would really like to see Lodolo have a nice game and get back on track. Hard to believe some on RLN suggested demoting him to AAA after his last appearance.

  4. Dennis Westrick

If I had a Genie in a bottle and he/she could grant me three (3) wishes today they would be: 1) Lodolo return to early season form and throw 7 shutout innings, 2) stop the Reds baserunning miscues and 3) Extend the winning streak to six (6) games!

  5. CI3J

Well, here we go. The Reds have to try to win yet another game in spite of David Bell rather than because of him.

It’s good that this team actually has some talent. But they probably should have about 2 or 3 more wins than they do. That’s the Bell effect.

    • Mario

I like this team but it doesn’t have much talent. How many guys on this team would play regularly for the Cubs, Cardinals, Brewers, or even Pirates? We don’t have a single guy similar to Goldschmidt, Adames, Reynolds, Happ, etc. It seems like Suwinski (spelling?) is making a big difference in the Pirates lineup. As is Wisdom for the Cubbies & Téllez for the Brew Crew.

  6. Lid

As a Bay Area Reds fan, got to see Hunter along with the few hundred … Oakland’s silver spoon owner worse than Bob

  7. Old-school

    Big game for Lodolo

Hes had 2 clunkers in a row but pitching in a friendly park against a bad team

    Just win

  8. Mark Moore

OK, RLN friends, I’m making a commitment today. I’m not going to bash or question Mr. Handy DT Bell today. I said my piece on a different thread and anyone here who knows me knows where I stand on the matter. It may mean I censor myself a couple times, but that’s how it rolls. I did this last season with 3M/4M. Regardless of today’s outcome, we’re on a 5-game streak and broke a few “curses” along the way.

Here’s to Lodolo getting it done today in fine fashion. Hoping we back him up with a plethora of crooked numbers.

Two final things to start off today’s Pig Kicking:

1 – the word my wife used about the dugout shot yesterday was “atrocious”. She remembered that a little bit ago and told me.

2 – from scratch pizza tonight … that’s crust and sauce, friends. I’ll probably even crack open a beer (Innis & Gunn Scottish Red, aged in a rum barrel) with dinner.

    Here’s to Sunday’s game!

    • Dennis Westrick

Mark, DM me on Facebook with your home address! Just kidding! Dinners are lonely events for me since I lost my wife of 44 years 3 years ago! She was a big Reds fan and knew to avoid me if the Reds were losing or after a loss!

      • Mark Moore

Dennis – you’d be welcome anytime (as would MOST of the others here 😀 )

We just hit 37 at the Moore house. I know some of what you speak of, though not with that intensity or permanence.

      • Votto4life

I am so sorry to hear that Dennis. I can’t imagine going through a loss like that. It sure puts baseball in perspective. I am sorry for your loss my friend.

    • Kevin H

I will follow Mark. Like you made my thoughts known too.

Today it’s positive and reds baseball. I feel a no hitter

      • Mark Moore

Thanks for the company, Kevin. If I had your address, I’d mail you a slice 😀 … no meat on it tonight, just red pepper, red onion, bella mushroom, and some fresh mozz.

    • RedsMonk65

Dinner always sounds glorious at your house.

      • RedsMonk65

Sort of like Grandpa Jones on “Hee-Haw”

  9. Harry Stoner

Senzel, who some folks noted had some mobility issues yesterday at 3b is back in CF so Bell can satisfy his Reynolds fix.

Friedl now has a higher split against lefties than the mightly Newman leading off.

But Bell goes with his ‘handedness’ despite the numbers.

Lodolo better have a great game to extend the streak.

And more from Ramos so they don’t ship him out to keep Reynolds when Myers comes back.

    • David

Ship out Ramos when Myers comes back? Yeah, that would be a “management” thing to do.
Really, at this point, I see why other teams have sort of “given up” on Myers. Not turning out to be the hoped for “veteran presence” guy we expected.

This is the problem with bringing up McClain, CES, etc now. Because we are stuck with Myers, have this three-headed catcher, and Joey Votto’s situation is in limbo.

      It’s a roster thing.

  10. Kevin H

Lodolo has a bounce back game. Newman 4-4 and reds win 7-0.

It’s almost time to play ball. Let’s go!!

    • Dennis Westrick

I hope you are prophetic! Need to run the winning streak to 6!

  11. Mark Moore

Just looked at the 40-man. Didn’t realize McClain and CES aren’t on it, but ELDC and Benson are. I have to think we’ll see some shuffling during May as the current round of sorting unfolds.

  12. Eddiek957

Is it just me or is it nice to be able to watch the reds? Here’s hoping we can break out the brooms.

  13. GreatRedLegsFan

Some bats in today’s lineup that hopefully will be gone soon.

  14. Old-school

Padres in mexico with the altitude and had a beer league softball score yesterday

Reds could catch them at a bad time bullpen pitching wise if Lodolo can slam the door here.

  15. Dennis Westrick

I think I’ve figured it out! For Sunday lineups, Bell takes all of the names of eligible players who are not pitchers, puts them in a large spinning Bingo-like basket and pulls them out! As for how he determines the batting order, haven’t a clue!

    • Kevin H

I took a oath of Mark. I am not allowed to comment. LOL

  16. GreatRedLegsFan

Seems like Williamson and Stoudt path to the majors has taken a detour.

    • Old-school

That happens. Hopefully Abbott becomes SP5 and and reds spend money on a quality vet in offseason

Reds have good young talent but they are going to have to spend money on a SP, lefty bat, catcher, and bullpen at the minimum

      • Jim Walker

Agree on the “soft” spots. I think more than 1 SP though.

      • Mario

Major detour. Williamson looks like a bad piece of the Winker/Suarez trade (along with Dunn). Hopefully Connor Phillips can emerge on the pitching staff by next season.

  17. Mark Moore

Same-day parlay from the pre-game is Senzel with a single, Ramos with a hit, and TySteve with a double. If that all hits, we’re probably in decent shape today.

Both Sam and Brian like the odds of it happening.

  18. Kevin H

Curious last time reds swept the A’s in Oakland. 1990 perhaps? I was younger back then. Sophomore in high school I think. Lol

    • Dennis Westrick

Know right where I was at Kevin! Watched the 1990 World Series Champion Reds sweep Larussa’s precious, highly favored A’s in four (4) games thanks to Jose Rijo with help from The Nasty Boys in the Reds bullpen. My late wife was 8 months pregnant with my youngest son! Ah, good memories of that year and that special Reds team!

    • Mark Moore

Magical doesn’t even begin to describe that WS … I have the full set of 1990 baseball cards.

      • Dennis Westrick

Even better Mark! I have the complete 1990 Reds WS on DVD as well as the 1975 & 1976 WS games!

    3 pitch K

Its ridiculous newman is a leadoff hitter and Fairchild is a 3 hole hitter

    No one can defend that.

    This isnt spring training.

    • Jim Walker

I agree. Bell puts Fairchild at 3 so he is set up to move Friedl or Fraley into that spot at the 1st sniff of a RH pitcher.

If he was making out a real lineup, he’d keep Steer in his normal 3 slot and put Fairchild or Senzel at 2 with the other at 5.

Alternately just bump up Stephenson and Ramos with Steer still in 2 and drop Fairchild to behind Senzel.

Optimally Bell would just play Friedl vs LH pitching and bat him 2 (as per normal) with Steer at 3 and Fairchild after Senzel.

This stuff ain’t rocket science until a person decides it needs to be for whatever reason.

  22. Old-school

Barrero showing off the cannon at SS

    • Mark Moore

Looked pretty deep in the hole. Good thing Reynolds didn’t tip it.

    • Melvin

“Barrero showing off the cannon at SS”

      Yep

    • CI3J

Yep. I’d love to see Newman make that play.

  23. Mark Moore

I could easily NOT like Rooker 😀

  24. Mark Moore

Is it a sin to K Jesus on a Sunday? Asking for a friend …

    • Mark Moore

Well … we won’t know for this AB. Just crushed it.

  25. Kevin H

Anyone know why CES was pitch hit for today after only one ab in Louisville?

    • Melvin

Possibly because they are getting killed and it’s a very cold windy day. I don’t know.

    • Jim Walker

We need a spy at the Louisville airport. 😉

      • Jim Walker

oops forgot the Bats are in Ioway. Does Ioway have any airports??

  26. Dennis Westrick

Lodolo showing some old Mahle habits by nibbling when ahead in the count!

    • RedsMonk65

Speaking of Mahle, the Twins have shut him down for now after he experienced “elbow soreness.”

  27. Dennis Westrick

And, the 2-out walk comes back to haunt Nodolo! Jeez!

    • LarkinPhillips

That wasn’t a walk. Rooker had a check swing single.

      • Dennis Westrick

My bad! Was watching the ESPN app on my phone and assumed a walk after the graphic showed a runner at first after a 3-2 count!

      • LarkinPhillips

        Fair assumption there Dennis. Haha

  28. LarkinPhillips

Poor time for Lodolo to “practice the change up.”

As others have mentioned, David Bell clearly is showing with this lineup today he don’t care if the win, so why should the players play any other way on a getaway day. Let’s root for the A’s to do A’s things and give away another win.

  29. Old-school

Ok… so lets end the notion Casali is a pitching whisperer

    End the 3 catcher nonsense.

    Lodolo.. what the heck

  31. Mark A Verticchio

Just look at the 1st and 3rd place hitters and you wonder how this team is even 12 and 15.

  32. Mark Moore

Nice rainbow shot from Nick. He’s done his part in that pre-game parlay.

    • Melvin

Wow. I’m about ready to say trade Senzel while we can. 🙂

  33. Old-school

    Senzel bomb!

Can we just go with Senzel and Barrero?

Reynolds strikes out on a violation

  34. Mark Moore

Batter violation for stepping out a second time … from a guy who was just in MiLB where that’s standard? C’mon, man!!!

  35. JB

Nick is back. Haven’t seen him hit like this for power since his first year. Let’s hope it continues.

  36. CI3J

    LOL! at Reynolds.

Got himself out by taking too long to get ready.

Seriously, you can’t make this up.

  37. Kevin H

    Okay Nick,

Lets focus and pitch. I am wondering if his confidence is shaken?

      • Kevin H

I encourage you not to jump, however yes become president. We need a leader to push Nick to a mVP!!!!

      • Old-school

        Ok Jim.

        Ill wait 2 weeks .

This is 6 consecutive games though hes had a meaningful winning at bat that impacted the game and theyve won all 5 games.

      • LDS

@OS, patience. Maybe he’s really coming around. Maybe he stays healthy. Maybe we just enjoy it for the time it lasts.

  39. VaRedsFan

Some people here say Senzel can’t hit if he plays CF.

As I’ve said before, if you can hit it doesn’t matter where you play.
One thing has nothing to do with the other.

Mookie Betts…gold glove outfielder….moves to the infield…plays 2nd base, and for the first time EVER just moved to SS.

Stop with that “natural” position” nonsense.

    • Kevin H

Some players though can’t and that is just it. Switching position’s isn’t as easy as one might not. Not disagreeing with you, just saying I see some say just go to outfield or play first base. Its not that simple.

As we know just cause Betts can do it, doesn’t mean Steer can or Mclain . Just a couple of examples

      • VaRedsFan

I agree with that, but I’m just saying 1 thing doesn’t affect the other like people here think it does.

Young guys trying to hit might have a little more trouble. But that’s why they’ve been practicing at new places….being coached in up daily.

I don’t they are in the batters box thinking about their defense position.

I’ll continue to say it. If you can hit, the defensive position you play, has little to no affect on your hitting

    • old-school

@ Va…I just think Senzel is way better at 3b and 2b than CF. If he was Billy Hamilton…sure. It just hasn’t worked out in CF. Find a CF and let Senzel compete in the infield. Once a week…sure.

      • VaRedsFan

        Agree OS…
        Senzel isn’t a bad CF’er…not great either

Looks ok so far at 3B.

His best hitting, however was early when he just took over in CF.
Kinda debunking the hitting from “out of position” theory

    • Mario

I think too many fans have made excuses for Nick. He may not have been happy or comfortable playing CF but it’s up to him to overcome that.

It is exciting to see him finally hitting after 3 dead years. I doubt it can continue but we can hope.

  40. CI3J

My main question is, WHY is Reynolds even playing? Bell doesn’t have to play him, he’s (supposedly) just a place-warmer until Myers is back.

Senzel could easily be at 3rd with Friedl in CF. Can anyone explain why that’s not the case?

    • Mark Moore

I have no opinion on that to offer … today … 😀

    • Kevin H

I am not allowed to say, I took Marks oath today 😀 LOL

    • Mark A Verticchio

I can explain, Bell has no idea how to manage a baseball team. They must try to win every day in spite of their manager. I have said it before Bell may be a nice man but he is a horrible manager.

    • Jim Walker

I am seriously wondering if there is some provision in the CBA that makes an actual game appearance for Reynolds personally important above and betond just being on the MLB active roster and picking up service time.

  41. Mark Moore

Clean inning. Nicely done. Now time for more crooked numbers from the boys.

  42. Dennis Westrick

Nice bounceback inning for Sir Nick!

  51. Mark Moore

  52. VaRedsFan

As Kevin asked earlier, Does anyone know why CES only batted once today and was removed. My first hope is that he got kicked out. Non-injury related please!

    • Mark Moore

Box score says HBP in the 1st inning. Let’s hope it was a precaution.

  53. old-school

Yikes…Fairchild doubles and TS doesn’t move him over. Lost opportunity

    • Mark Moore

Yep. Ramos did his part, but needed Fairchild on 3rd to make it work.

    • Jim Walker

I’ll give TS half a pass. He looked like he was trying to drive the ball; and, given what’s happened since, the A’s 3rd run, that might not have been a bad plan.

After all, it was only the 4th inning. But yeah, TS could have tried to go to right-center or even up the middle versus doing a full rollover.

  54. Mark Moore

    Did I mention I’m thinking I don’t like Rooker?

  55. Mark Moore

Seems like Nick is hanging them just a bit.

  56. LDS

Someone needs to figure out the Lodolo issue quickly. Something is off. I won’t be surprised if he winds up on the IL shortly.

  57. Dennis Westrick

Rooker is the newest Reds Killer!

  58. Brian Rutherford

We need Abbot up here and Lodolo in the pen. It won’t happen because Bell is an idiot and puts veterans before young players. His idiot pitching rotation is the problem here

    • CI3J

      We need Abbot up here

      Yes, in good time.

      and Lodolo in the pen.

      Absolutely not.

  59. Dennis Westrick

Can this awesome lineup conjured up by Handy DT Bell score more than one (1) run?

    • Melvin

What are you complaining about? Reynolds just had a bloop hit. 🙂

  60. old-school

Well…Reds have this winning formula down the last week. Get behind early by multiple runs, then steal victory from the jaws of defeat late. Sitting pretty.

  61. Old-school

And just like that Reynolds and Barrero with seeing eye bloopers

  62. Kevin H

Lets relax on Lodolo to the pen talk

    • JB

Lodolo just needs to use the whole plate. He will be fine.

    • Mark Moore

Yep. I think he’s nibbling too much. Plenty of time to correct that.

      • Dennis Westrick

Ghost of Mahle The Nibbler haunts every mound that Lodolo pitches from!

  63. JB

Newman can hit anywhere in the order? Come on Bell, he can barely hit period. He certainly isn’t a 4 hitter.

  64. Melvin

David Bell on why Newman is leading off, “We can move him up and down because he can hit pretty much anywhere in the order”. lol

    • LDS

Bell missed his calling, standup comedian

      • Melvin

Sad thing is I think he really believes it.

  65. old-school

Oh no…steer took one the knee..

    That didnt look good.

  66. VaRedsFan

In the name of Jim Walker….let Stuey deliver here.

    • VaRedsFan

      good wood…no result.
Casali and Newman, not so much.

  67. Melvin

They didn’t look good for Steer. Possible IL on the HBP in the knee.

    • Harry Stoner

I knew Reynolds was going to be around for awhile.

    • Jim Walker

Well Stu guessed right and gave it a ride at least. Looked like maybe the wind caught it and pushed toward CF as the RF was looking up all the way like it was wall bound.

  68. Old-school

Back to back innings runners on with no outs and didnt advance.
Cant do that if no power.

Nick Senzel home run is only run.

This team needs to execute better or play guys with power

    • LarkinPhillips

Those two innings are absolutely unacceptable. Especially verse the A’s. There is no accountability for it from Bell though.

    • CI3J

      play guys with power

I’d settle for just playing guys that can hit.

Hint: That’s NOT Newman, Reynolds, or Maile. Yet Bell insists on playing them.

If any of you were on the old ESPN.com boards back in the day, do you remember the “BOONE = AUTOMATIC OUT” running theme? I suggest we update it to “NEWMAN = AUTOMATIC OUT”.

  69. Mark Moore

    Completely SQUANDERED multiple opportunities.

  70. Mark A Verticchio

Well Newman leading off has not worked so far today David Bell.

    • Melvin

Newman is a Barry Larkin to David Bell.

    • LarkinPhillips

He will be back in there tomorrow though. David Bell said as much yesterday in his pregame. He believes in Newman.

      • CI3J

I’m really starting to believe those posters on here that said the reason Bell loves mediocre journeymen like Farmer and Newman is because he sees himself when he looks at them.

That’s the only logical explanation why he keeps playing them at the expense of younger, more deserving players.

  71. Old-school

Senzel sliding catch in cf and Lodolo quick inning.

  72. Mark Moore

Senzel looked better on that play than the last couple times in CF. I think he’s more than a little fired up and just wants to be out there.

  73. Kevin H

    India or Newman.. ugh.

Mark I hope I didn’t break the Oath LOL

  74. LarkinPhillips

Stephenson needs a couple days off. He is pressing and looks worn down.

    • Mark Moore

Yeah … I don’t think he’s getting that double for the parlay. Ramos just did his part.

    • VaRedsFan

      They were off Thursday.
      I settle for 1 game…not 2….he’s been hitting lately

      • Melvin

Yeah. He had his BA up to .290 before the game today I believe.

  75. Kevin H

Senzel creeping toward batting 300 😀

  76. old-school

Ramos singles again. Senzel singles again.

    Need some runs!

  77. Mark Moore

I do believe Spring Training is over for Nick Senzel. On a 10-17 stretch is what Thrall just said.

  78. JB

If you haven’t yet, there is still room on the Nick Senzel bandwagon.

  79. Melvin

Senzel is basically just hitting the ball hard right now which I like. Wish everyone would do that. Forget about launch angles. Just hit with the sweet spot and let the bat do a lot of the work for you.

  80. Kevin H

Barrero hits right handed pitching better than Left.

    • JB

Yeah but it fits Bells game plan. Get Newman and Reynolds plenty of at bats.

  81. Kevin H

Why in the top of the 6th is he pitch hitting??? Oh my goodness.

    Sorry Mark, LOL

    Bell just baffles me

  82. old-school

Newman inside out blooper to rf. Can they make it 6 in a row?

  83. Melvin

Newman comes through. Glad it worked. lol

  84. Old-school

Yikes…Steer obliterates a ball for an out and Newman fists a blooper..
    baseball.

    Let’s win this.

    • Melvin

Bell had already set it up so that he had to keep Newman in the game there since he had already taken Barrero out.

  85. Old-school

Yikes…Steer obliterates a ball for an out and Newman fists a blooper..
    baseball.

    Let’s win this.

  86. old-school

Bell just changed the entire lineup!!!

Sadak says David bell moves perfection.

    Who pays Sadak check????

    • Melvin

Correct me if I’m wrong but I believe we’re in the 6th inning and we basically have no bench left.

      • JB

Bell use to do that with Winker. Replace him early then the game goes in extras and he has nobody. Clown show

      • LDS

Nah, still has Maile. Bell has shown little growth over his tenure. If anything, he’s getting worse. Nothing empowers bad managers more than a couple of successes. They start believing their actions actually produced that result.

      • Melvin

Sure. Maile can play most anywhere just like Newman can hit most anywhere. I get it now. Silly me.

  87. Kevin H

Lodolo out after only 70 pitches…

    • Jonathan

I saw that too. How is Lodolo out? From gamecast he seemed to be doing ok

    • LarkinPhillips

I thought it was a super early pull. To me Bell got sub happy and it succeeded in the top of 6th so now he had to continue with the bullpen.

  88. Dennis Westrick

Lodolo with Cessa-like numbers today! 5 innings pitched, 3 earned runs and 2 HRs allowed!

    • Kevin H

70 pitches thrown. I would of liked to see him get another inning or two. Padres coming up and my thought would be save bullpen for the Pads.

    • Brian Rutherford

Send him to the pen and bring up Abbot!

  89. Mark Moore

Pizza is cooling, beer is poured (and tasty), I’m done yelling at Sims for not throwing strikes … and we’re somehow still ahead.

  90. JB

We are in the 7th inning and our DH is still in play. Somebody needs to let Bell know.

    • LarkinPhillips

I thought he absolutely is safe.

    • Mark Moore

Not enough angles to overturn it? Isn’t that the difference between “stands” and “confirmed”?

  91. JB

Im not sure how they missed that. I need to get off my butt and become a umpire. Obviously anybody can do it.

  92. Votto4life

Why even have instant replay when you still get the call wrong.

    • Mark Moore

Yeah. But our opinion doesn’t mean jack 😛

    • JB

There was three angles and everyone showed India was safe.

    • Votto4life

Yes, India’s foot hit the bag without being touch by the third baseman’s tag. India’s foot hit the glove, after hitting the bag. It wasn’t even particularly that close IMO.

  93. Kevin H

    Wow…

Y didn’t the manager go out and stand up for his team? LoL

  94. Mark Moore

Need a GIDP in the worst way here.

    • Mark Moore

Or that … we get that instead.

  95. Kevin H

Farmer has had 1 bad game. Let’s not make it two…

  96. Mark Moore

Please, Rooker … don’t make me absolutely hate you.

  97. VaRedsFan

Newman saved a run with the dive

      • Melvin

I was thinking Barrero may have had a play on that ball. Maybe not.

  98. JB

Typical Bell. Make changes early and then the other team ties the game. Now he has no bench. Year after year he does this.

  99. Melvin

With all the subbing that’s been going on you can see that Newman and Reynolds are still in there.

  100. Dennis Westrick

Rooker strikes again! And, of course, the Reds relief pitcher-select HAD to issue the mandatory walk!

  101. Kevin H

    Okay Lets go..

India, Friedl, Fraley to lead it off. OH WAIT…. Nevermind LOL

  102. VaRedsFan

Newman’s 2 hits off of righties.

  103. Mark Moore

    Steer gets off the schneid!

Time for India to make some rain … or sausage out of this Pig.

    • Mark Moore

Or TySteve … that’s who I meant all along … don’t know what I was thinking.

  104. Mark Moore

Sorry, folks. TySteve looks beat down to his socks right now.

    • LarkinPhillips

Today might be the worst I have ever seen Tysteve look. Reds deserve to lose this. Hope they don’t though.

    • Kevin H

This is where Lodolo could of pitched a inning more or two. Geesh

  105. Mark Moore

    PAINFUL!!!

Who do we get for the 9th?

  106. Kevin H

Reds have had plenty of chances in this game. Plenty!!!

    • VaRedsFan

Bad game for sure…but he’s been hot up until today

  107. Brian Rutherford

If Bell hadn’t messed with the lineup they would have scored there. Worst manager in the game. Bring up Robinson and send Stephenson down but Bell won’t play him because he loves vets.

    • Woodrow

Wait. What? Is Frank Robinson catching in the system?

News: “David Bell walks across Ohio River”
      Commenters: “Bell can’t swim. Loser.”

    • Beaufort Red

Say what. Send Stephenson down. I want some of what your drinking!!!

    • RedsMonk65

I believe Mr. Rutherford is employing sarcasm here… And I can at least partly understand why.

  108. Mark Moore

At least my beer tastes good and the pizza was excellent.

  109. Votto4life

Why is Reynolds in The major leagues again?

    • Mark Moore

I have no response that can explain it.

    • LDS

Utility. And his golden glove obviously. Imagine, if Bell had simply started the best lineup without his handedness fetish, the Reds probably run away with the game.

      • Kevin H

Yep, the lineup that scored 11 runs in game 1.

        Never went back to it.

  110. LarkinPhillips

Another day of a player playing out of position making an error. Hopefully diaz bails bell out.

    • Mark Moore

I believe Reynolds played some 1B last year. I’m pretty certain he didn’t at L’Ville.

  111. Kevin H

Sure Lodolo throws 70 pitches. Through 5 complete innings. Good for at least 2 more innings. Sims, Farmer, and Law.. Now you bring in Diaz with 2 on and no outs. Padres coming up next…

    • Kevin H

Reds have had alot of chances today as well. Still the questionable decisions or whatever it is this manager does.

  112. Brian Rutherford

If we had a manger that stressed fundamentals more those errors wouldn’t have happened. When will the franchise finally see the light!

    • JB

I’m not sure a manger would due any good here. Would the light be the north star? Kind of early for that

  113. JB

Oakland will show the Reds how to bring a runner home from third with no outs.

  114. Mark Moore

I do believe we’re completely screwed here.

  115. Mark Moore

Kotsay out to protest … because he “has” to.

  116. Votto4life

Can’t give a team that many chances even the A’s

  117. Kevin H

Why start Law in the 9th?? Why remove Lodolo after 70 pitches.

Also reds had their chances, however ….

  118. Melvin

Well. So much for a 6 game winning streak. Momentum deflated.

  119. Mark Moore

Lost in this crappy game is our 5-0 run that included a sweep of Tejas.

Got to get a couple guys out of their funk before we take the field in San Diego. I won’t get more than an hour in for those games.

Night all. You make even today’s type of game bearable and I do appreciate it.

  120. LDS

Bell Ball – 4 runs against the worse pitching in MLB. But hey, Newman and Reynolds played the whole game, while Barrero and Fairchild, both with hits were pulled. While Maile, who homered yesterday, was on the bench wondering how to get Tinker Bell to put him in.

  121. Beaufort Red

Guys just my opinion. I think RLN needs to quit wasting brain cells on Bell. It’s not worth it and it’s not gonna happen, this year at least. If it does I’ll gladly eat crow.

    • LDS

I’m expecting a Bell extension any day now.

    • Kevin H

I agree, it is hard sometimes. As some moves makes one go huh lol

  122. VaRedsFan

Sorry TJ and Jake…..facing another lefty tomorrow in Snell

  123. Kevin H

In fairness Newman got two hits and the reds had numerous chances to score runs. Reds offense didn’t produce.

India and Stephenson both struck out with runners on second and third

    • LDS

And that means? He also couldn’t score from 1st on a double.

      • Kevin H

You said “bell ball” and couldn’t score runs. The Reds had numerous chances to score runs and didn’t. As much as you mention Newman he wasn’t the issue today.

      • Kevin H

I at times couldn’t score from 1st on a double when I played ball. I have seen numerous ball players who couldn’t score from 1st on a double. Again Newman wasn’t the problem today

      • LDS

Nor was he the solution. If Newman and Reynolds are starting then by definition, Bell isn’t fielding his best team. So it goes. I still expect they have a good chance to lose 100 and StL won’t be in last place forever.

    • SteveAreno

Plus, Newman got 2 RBIs and led the team in that category along with excellent defense. You should complain about someone else today

  124. Dennis Westrick

Had to step out for awhile! Lots of second guessing from the starting lineup, batting order, player positioning, pulling Lodolo after 70 pitches, starting Law in the 9th, etc.! Trying to figure Bell’s thinking and actions is just exhausting!

Glad we won 2 out of 3 but should have taken all 3!

  125. Dennis Westrick

Didn’t lose any ground in the NL Central as EVERYBODY in the Division lost today!
