Christian Encarnacion-Strand, Elly De La Cruz among today’s cuts

The Reds cut five players from big league camp today, including Christian Encarnacion-Strand – who has probably been the best hitter in spring training in the entire country – and top prospect Elly De La Cruz.

Luke Weaver left his start early….

What to do with the Cincinnati Reds

Jason Linden’s column is back this week. This morning he took a look at how things in spring training have gone and how some of that may come into play with what he would be doing to make the Reds both fun this season as well as the fastest path to the team being good once again.

Glad to see CES is in the starting lineup again so he can continue his hot hitting and possibly play a big part in keeping us from another slow start of the season. Oh wait. He’s not on the 26 man roster anymore. smh

Just like Bell did when Barrero came up the first time riding a hot streak, Bell had to sabotage CES just to justify playing “his” guys with the “veteran presence” instead of the younger, better players. You couldn’t have Barrero coming up and taking Farmer’s spot, oh no, you can’t have that. Farmer was the starter, and that’s all there is to it. Doesn’t matter if Barrero had/has the potential to be better than Farmer ever was, SS belonged to Farmer. Just like now, doesn’t matter how good CES is, he’s not a “veteran”, so sorry, no room for him.

Because nothing says excitement like watching a 30-something mediocre player with a career 85 OPS+ (see also: Pinder, Newman, et. al.). No, you can’t let those young kids get too cocky, gotta keep them in their place and teach them to respect their elders. They have to wait their turn, these “veterans” earned the right to play every day.

I’m really getting a sinking feeling that this rebuild is going fail simply because David Bell refuses to buy into it. I know Krall sets the roster, but Bell seems to go out of his way to avoid playing any of the kids Krall gives him. Remember, India would have never gotten a shot if it hadn’t been for an injury.

So luke Weaver soft tissue pitching related injury and overton who
Missed 3/4 of last season with a stress fracture of his scapula has an ERA over 12 and hasnt pitched 2 innings in a row and justin Dunn is shut down and Stoudt sent down and Cessa in WBC and its down to soft tossing 84 mph Chase Anderson to save the day???

Mike Minor might be an upgrade!

This starting pitching could be historically bad again and 2017 was awful

Theres going to be more injuries as pitchers ramp up and theres zero margin? Can we get Arroyo off his boat? Whats rubber arm Scott Sullivan doing? Danny graves is the parade grand marshall OD ? Sam Lecure could come down for an inning from the broadcast booth?

Why not sign Dylan Bundy or Chris Archer? I mean they are warm bodies?

The boys face another ML starting pitcher in Greinke tonight. Let’s see if they can get more than a couple hits.

And same manager. They sent down the guys doing it differently. Can’t have that. Can’t embarrass the veterans.

With the new balanced schedule there’s 13 games with the Pirates instead of the usual 19, and 12 games each with the Reds 3 other rivals in the NLC. In my opinion the current spring training indicates, if injuries do not become a major factor, that the Reds will challenge the Pirates and Cubs for 3rd. place in the NLC.

At least, it was a good outing for Greene. No walks through five. For a Reds pitcher, that’s like being a Cy Young candidate. Speaking of which, I see the Reds CY winner signed overseas.

I saw that. You’re right. He was flat on his butt and threw him out. Pretty amazing.

Why do I suspect that if Votto is ready for opening day that Vosler gets the call. Bell & the FO have mad3 me cynical, I guess. The first two guys on and nothing to show for it is so last year.

There are some on here that say there is no way he’ll make the team again. That’s not the way the MLB announcers are talking tonight.

I’d almost bet he comes east with the team. He fits the pattern.

      • Melvin

The thought crossed my mind that maybe Krall is setting Bell up so he can fire him finally. Hahaha

  13. LDS

Another Strickland special. What’s the over/under on the number of appearances he’ll make without giving up a run. An ERA approaching 12 and a WHIP approaching 3. That’s a real high leverage pitcher. But, he’s 34 and has that veteran presence.

Don’t say things like that to people that think Bell is great…because on his 12th try he finally got 3 people out in high leverage, and they got to say “See…Bell was right to stick with him.”

Same as last year and he got a contract.
