The Cincinnati Reds have signed Tommy Eveld for the 2023 season. The right-handed pitcher signed a minor league deal, but maybe the Reds can also get him some work in their graphic design department?
My photoshop isn’t great, but I am excited to be joining the @Reds org for the 2023 season. Thanks to @ISEBaseball @Mark_Pieper and @TreadHQ for a great offseason and this opportunity to extend my career throwing baseballs #cincinnatireds #reds #heckyeahplayball #touchdowntommy pic.twitter.com/XlF3dDe4wQ

The 29-year-old reliever has never pitched in the big leagues but he has found success in Triple-A over the last two seasons. In 2021 he posted a 3.63 ERA with Jacksonville, throwing 44.2 innings with 16 walks and 54 strikeouts. Last season he returned to Jacksonville and posted a 3.38 ERA in 34.2 innings with 10 walks and 31 strikeouts.
While he is a reliever, Tommy Eveld does throw three pitches. He’s got a fastball that works in the low 90’s and touched 95 last year. The pitch shows high spin rate, especially for it’s velocity. He’ll also mix in both a slider and a change up. Both of his secondary offerings work in the mid-to-upper 80’s.
Cincinnati’s bullpen depth in the minor leagues isn’t great. I gave the relief pitching prospect group in the organization a D+ grade earlier this week. That’s not to say that there aren’t some relievers in the system with upside, but the highest upside guys have huge question marks with them. And of course that doesn’t include guys that are currently starting pitchers who will move into the bullpen for one reason or another.
Tommy Eveld isn’t going to be a guy you look at and think that he’s going to be a future closer, or probably even a relief ace. But he is another guy who has found plenty of success in Triple-A. That kind of depth will give Cincinnati’s front office options that may be more reliable than “has stuff and can’t throw it near the plate” guys like they’ve seen in the past few years if and when the time comes for the Reds to make some call ups.
You can see all of Tommy Eveld’s stats here.
Looks like a solid pickup. The Reds have enough options in the outfield and on the infield, but won’t win many games if they can’t hold a lead. With Antone hurt and Sims and Santillan coming back from… back injuries, more arms that might actually be decent from the bullpen is definitely a good thing.
I like this guy already.
With his artwork he seems excited about it. A positive attitude is a plus.
Who is John Murphy right handed pitcher on Reds transactions. Says he is 26 with no minor league stats.

This team is starting to inspire me to watch the major league movies again.
A remake with the Reds seems appropriate the way this off season is going.
The Reds need an attitude, aggressive, nasty, and fun!. Tired of us being out at the all star break. The Refs and Dodgers owned the west, lately we have been the farm team for the elite teams. Go Reds
We’ll see if the management team can make some lemonade this year!!
I do expect a sour taste to be left in my mouth over this season
hopefully with just enough sugar!
