The Cincinnati Reds will continue their road trip, making the long trip from Miami to Milwaukee as they open up a weekend series against the 1st place Brewers. Cincinnati will hand the ball to Robert Dugger tonight, who will be making his first big league start since June 27th of 2021 when he was with the Seattle Mariners. The Brewers will send Ohio native Eric Lauer to the mound as the lefty looks to keep Milwaukee at the top of the division. Tonight’s game is only available on the Apple TV+ streaming service when it comes to television viewing options. It’s free, but you will need to sign in with a free Apple account. More info can be found here.

Robert Dugger
This will only be the 4th appearance in the big leagues for Robert Dugger this season, and his 3rd with the Reds. He’s thrown 6.2 innings with the Reds and allowed three runs, walked three batters, and he’s struck out 10. This season in Triple-A between Louisville and Durham (Tampa Bay’s affiliate) he’s posted a 4.30 ERA in 58.2 innings with 24 walks and 45 strikeouts.
His splits don’t feature much time in the big leagues, so they aren’t going to be entirely valuable by comparison to someone who has pitched a lot more in the majors this year, but you can get somewhat of a general idea of how each side of the play may perform against him in comparison to the other. For Dugger, the splits are pretty even.

Eric Lauer
Teams don’t send many left-handed hitters to the plate against Lauer – they’ve racked up just 66 plate appearances against him all season long. The ones who do get their chance haven’t done all that much as they’ve posted a .648 OPS against him. Right-handed hitters aren’t hitting for much average and they aren’t getting on base, either, but they are hitting for some power.
Not shown below are his home and road splits, and they are very slanted towards success at home. While pitching in Milwaukee he is holding hitters to a .671 OPS (.786 on the road) and has an ERA of 2.85 (4.47 on the road).

News and Notes
Hunter Greene placed on the injured list
About 40 minutes before the start of tonight’s game the Cincinnati Reds announced that Hunter Greene was placed on the 15-day injured list with a right shoulder strain. The team called up reliever Ryan Hendrix to take his spot on the roster.
Old Friend Alert
Wow. MLB says it has suspended Derek Dietrich w/o pay for 50 games for testing positive for 1,4-dimethylpentylamine, or DMPA, which it says is a banned stimulant. Dietrich was at Triple-A w/ the Yankees.

I was really looking forward to watching the game tonight. Too bad MLB made this one part of the “stick it to the MLB.tv fans” package. I know I could sign up for free and all, but the hassle of creating one more account and adding yet another app somewhere just grates on me. Looks like Gameday is in order with perhaps some WLW audio feed. That or a MiLB game.
OK, rant over. Interesting line-up. Let’s see if Donnie Barrels gives JV any protection and if the top 3 can produce. Hoping Kyle gets comfortable at 3B quickly.
Time to Kick some Bernie Pigs!!
I agree … all this did was devalue my mlb.tv subscription … not happy.
I actually shouldn’t complain since mine came courtesy of T-Mobile. Next year I’ll have to pony up since I switched carriers.
seriously, there might be a route to a class action here, I mean we all expect to be able to see all the games right…
Would work if we got a judge and jury who don’t like Apple in general … 😀
Between this and the blackouts on mlb when the Pirates play ( I have to listen to their pathetic announcers on their network) it’s enough to make me an Orioles fan. No freakin way
MLB making harder and harder to be a baseball fan. Very stupid and short sighted to say the least.
+10,000
+1000
OK, add another 0 for me too 🙂
Same price, worse and worse product every year
Yet another absurd restriction on MLB fans. Just had last weekend with no Reds games bc they played Baltimore– and I live in Raleigh, NC!
Can’t imagine a dumber marketing plan to prevent me from watching my team play bc my cable system subscriber base is supposed to be paying for the “regional” Fox/Bally/raycomjeffersonpilot channel that carries Oriole (same with Nats) games. Despite that being totally out if any known geographic association anyone is aware of, other than “greed and avarice”.
Anyway, I get pretty miffed that i paid for the full baseball package in times like these. My team isn’t even trying to win and yet I still want to watch, and baseball still craps on me.
To quote Yakov Smirnoff, What a Country!!!
Wow! 70Ks for Dugger in only 12.0 innings pitched. Pretty impressive for a guy who’s been DFA four times this year. ?
+5,000 for use of that meme. Who didn’t love her in Clueless?
Sorry, I couldn’t resist! You always do a great job with the information you provided us, Doug.
She’s still pretty clueless in real life
17 in 12 isn’t too bad. That WHIP number is ugly.
50 games for Dietrich. I have to believe that may be the death knell for his career given his age and such.
may explain the flexing though
Greene to DL with a shoulder strain per C Trent. Hopefully nothing more serious.
Kershaw to the IL with lower-back strain.
Just seeing Greene to IL, So Dunn for Sunday
game delayed…. bashing on apple broadcasts is not
Mahle pitching for Twins this evening. 9 Pitches to get through 1st inning. Cy pitcher soon!!
He will do good in thst ballpark. No more small ballpark for him.
Cy comment was me being sarcastic, however I do agree he will be better getting out of a small park.
Bob Uecker talking and Harvey’s Wallbangers. That was an awesome team.
Senzel smoked that one.
Joey with a rope off the lefty.
nice AB
They’re making him work, but the zone looks tight
Yeah, I thought Joey and Solano both got some calls.
4 nice ABs, and then Aquino steps in…
Man, he just looks so overmatched up there too often
Aquino doing what he does best
AA with his normal strike out ab.
He usually swings at the low and outside pitch. (usually it’s out of the strike zone tho) so the fact that he held up might actually be improvement. (thinking positive thoughts)
Fair point, thanks for sharing as I am on gameday. So, I didn’t see that.
Yeah but he swung through two straight belt high center cut fastballs
If he can’t hit those what can he hit
95 that dotted the corner. You’d like to see him protect there, but thats a tough pitch to hit for sure. Still a strike all the way with 2 strikes and he just watched it, that after swinging for the fences and fouling it back on a FB middle in where a single would suffice.
Going by the strike box on the screen it looked like a fair strike 3 call on Aquino but he looked like he saw it all the way and reacted like he thought it was not a strike. Farmer was called out on a similar vertical location and wasn’t real happy either. Too close to take as they say but wonder if the strike box is off.
Dugger pitching around Telez?
ouch
I was just going to say I hope he avoids throwing a cookie like Minor did to Jesus … then THAT happened.
Early 2-run hole could be hard to fill in … again.
“Downtown … where all the lights are bright …”
Tellez is the new Eric Thames
tellez and vogelbach long lost twins
So glad we have retread Dugger pitching tonight–such an important part of our future.
who would you pitch instead?
Dunn…. but now that is sunday…. I would hope
I’m sure theres a guy someone could name, but why even post a comment like that if you haven’t already looked for one
Dunn.
Williamson.
Bullpen night.
Anybody but this retread.
It’s 5-0 in the second on national TV.
I’m not sure where Dunn is on his rehab and Williamson doesnt need to be rushed just because of a nationally televised game. A bullpen game with this team doesn’t sound like it would do much better so whats the point. I dont want to watch Duggar either but whats the point in griping about it when he’s just a fill in. Likely whomever you choose instead yields the same result.
he’s a fill-in and DFA when another guy gets healthy or emerges as an option. The advantage is you’re not burning an option year on anyone in a lost season and losing the guy doesnt hurt when you dont need him any more.
Who would you pitch? LOL
Dugger does not seem to have much. I didn’t see one pitch reach 90 mph.
I often wonder why Okey didn’t get a shot.
Just one side note observation, minor league records aren’t everything, but all 4 of our teams are either last or next to last in their leagues right now.
2 reasons…. we have good players on bad teams… and second…. we have gutted AAA due to injuries and that messes with their mojo
We have gutted AAA because of injuries I will give you. Dayton and Daytona are different stories. Also good players are supposed to overcome bad managing, at least according to the David Bell defenders.
lol, how offbase that sounds is crazy. First of all its about development at that level, not their record, and last I checked Bell isnt their manager. Plus some of them are 18-20 yrs old. Other teams have the same types of guys too, did you care to look at any other teams? All that after admitting records arent everything.
@2020. I know bell is not their manager. The Bell thing was a joke as people constantly say he only loses because the team is full of bad players therefore none of his decisions matter or can be criticized. I know it’s about development at that level, but Learning to win is part of development. My point was merely that all 4 teams are struggling which is interesting.
I gotta say that this broadcasting crew is servicable…… dugger not so much
not sure who they are, but ya I’m enjoying both of them. Happy its not Sadak or the Brewers announcers.
The female is very prepared. Do we know who the analyst is?
Oh Dugger don’t worry, you are going back
DFA…
Wynne deserves a shot. I mean he could do no worse.
Oops never mind lol
Dugger’s nibbling as Dennis likes to say
Anybody think that Dugger was separated at birth with Adam Driver?
that me me chuckle
Minor finally moved up to 4 on the rotation
LoL
Regardless of how this turns out tonight with Greene going down we may see this guy again. He is just a fill in and not part of the future but it is what it is for now.Maybe Dunn or Williamson or both the next time through the rotation.
Meanwhile Mahle pitching 1 hit baseball no runs allowed in his start so far.
Glad I didn’t muck around with being able to watch the game. I’m calling a Clete. Catch you all tomorrow when the video feed is back to normal.
I dont blame you, I have an apple phone so no effort for me but yet another example of mlb.com eroding their cheaper subscription options. Strongly considering canceling it next season actually
I want to thank the Beatles for my access. I subscribed at Christmas for my Fab4ever wife to be able to watch the Peter Jackson documentary, “Get Back.” It was more than worth it for that alone. I am lazy, ergo I STILL have the script.
Dugger pitches like Minor, but for $10M less
Syndegard pitched yesterday and he seemed washed out a bit… he was not pitching for 9 days, looked rusty…. Iam not surprised Dugger struggles in this one.
Batting and pitching practice for the bernies tonight
At least the Yelich isn’t on cycle watch…yet
Castillo, Gray, Mahle, Gutiérrez, Miley vs. Duggar, Minor, Lodolo, Dunn, Ashcraft. Young guys only count when they can stay healthy. A couple of years ago, writers were touting the Reds surplus of outfielders. Just a few days ago, the surplus of young pitchers. With Greene going down again, that doesn’t leave much margin for error. Obviously, Duggar wasn’t a key future piece. Time to dip deeper into minors. Going to lose a lot of games the rest of the year. Hopefully, they’ll do it with Williamson, Abbott, et al and not the Duggar/Minor types. Waive and release.
Correct LDS.Dugger has given up 5 runs on 3 hits because of the walks. He is at 88 tops which mean he has to have his control because he has no room for error.
Hopefully, they’ll do it without needlessly rushing guys. I really dont care who they pitch the rest of this year, it doesn’t matter one iota whether we like watching it or not.
Tellez stole second. Let’s call this one.
the 2nd SB of his career
This is a combination of a DFA non future pitcher and a easy to steal on Catcher….. would not worry about it because as soon as we can get rid of both we will
Drury was very important to this lineup wasn’t he?
Yes he was. Clearly shows.
Drury was but management didn’t think so.
2 games…. Berrios not helping his own case. IMHO he has the rest of the season and thats it. We have 800 shortstops in the minors now.
LOL@800 ss haha
but we do lol
Barrero can’t hit mlb pitching. Aqunio can’t hit mlb pitching. Time to move on
I agree lets release both of them tomorrow and try 2 more players.
lol
Can’t argue they both look lost.
If that’s the case, the Reds are not without prospects for shortstop.
Wheels came off for Mahle.Still up 5-4 but Jays have hit 3 homers in last 2 innings and counting. He will still win a bunch for the Twins.
After the next 2 months Joey might not want to come back and I wouldn’t blame him 2023 could be ugly, 100 plus losses.
Well, he has not been part of the solution either
No argument here. I think it would be best for all if he would retire a year early. How much money does he need? Plus, I bet the Reds would buy him out for a good chunk of his salary or at least they should.
He has about 25 million reasons for coming back next year. He Ain’t no fool.
Mahle’s night is done. 4 runs allowed in 6 innings of work. Not great, however at least he is out of the band box of a ballpark
Mahle is out of the Bandbox but many hitters seem to like the Bandbox.
Reds finally on the board. as for Votto already has a hit and a walk today. Cant hit a Solo 5 run homerun
Votto has the best numbers in the lineup outside of Solano.
What he can is a DP with runners in 1st and 2nd and one out…
Bell needs to play more aggressive with this lineup… try a doble steal.. small ball or something out of the normal…
Reds have won 3 out of the last 4 by only scoring 8 runs.Drury homers in the bottom of the 8th on Sunday and we win 3-2.Almora drives in 2 and score the other on Monday and we win 3-1.Aquino drives in both runs Tuesday and throws a player out at the plate as we win 2-1.Ty Steve is gone as is Drury.Everybody else that plays has to pick it up and so far this year nobody else has done that. All of the regulars have had downs year as per the back of their card unless you want to say Senzel and his 250 average is good. The rest Farmer,Joey and Moose are under their career numbers the last 2 way way under.Almora is about at his career numbers but there is a reason the Cubs let him go and the same with Reynolds who ha splayed with what 4 or 5 teams. In addition we have no catcher that can hit or at least Pap can’t and he seems to be the starter. Its been that way all year long but our starting pitching kept it close and now with 2 gone we get games like this and will get more unless the hitters step up which they haven’t the first 100 games.
+1000000
At least the third base plan for next year seems to be dealt with. And almost certain now that Moose is getting a DFA
Who’s on 3rd?
Farmer… “for the rest of the season”
I have no clue if Barrero or Aquino will ever make it in the big leagues but it doesn’t hurt one bit for this year and some of next year if they play a lot.It will sort itself out and the Reds need to bring more form the minors as well.Friedl Lopez and that guy at first in AA and Shrock if he recovers from injury along with Fairchild and just let them play.It hurts nothing and only helps looking to next year.I was really hoping somebody wanted Solano and really hoped they would part with Moose but its not my money. What it would have done is created 3 more spots if Reynolds went with them for younger players to claim.
Barrero behind on everything.
Yes, just play Barrero everyday. I like Farm Town Hero, but he isn’t the future. Barrero may not be either, but he needs his shot this year and next. McLain, De La Cruz, and even Marte might be ready for their call up sometime next season. If not they are assuredly likely to be ready in 24.
Looks like DBell will be going with India, Senzel, Farmer and JV at the top of the lineup the rest of ‘22. Spots 6-9 should be used to evaluate the rest of the roster. I’m thinking the 5 spot will go to the DH combo of Solano and Moose.
Pap has not shown much. He is onlyy 26 so guess you let him play to see what he can do. But he only hit .246 in the minors last year so I doubt he is going to add much offense to the team. He has a noodle of an arm and his defense is not impressive. I just have to wonder if there are not better options available? Is this the best the Reds can do?
Going to clete, my way to the gym. Learned not much today, except Bererros clock is running
Bell just told Barrera and Aquino I may have to start you but first chance I get I pinch hit for you.If I am Krall I fire him tomorrow
Couldn’t agree more. His comments in the Sheldon article saying Aquino was going to play more were qualified with it not meaning he was playing every day. Sounds like Bell and Farmer are both unhappy.
If I’m Bell I’m praying they fire me. Get me away from this ownership and second guessing fan base as quick as possible. Oh and did I mention he will still get paid.
If I’m Greene, Ashcraft,Lodolo. India and Stephenson I’m protecting myself the best I can and counting the days I can leave Cincinnati. Ownership will not surround them with anything other then prospects who may or may not work out. The idea of using prospects to bring in some established talent will not be utilized because they would have to pay them.
I keep hearing people say fire Bell. Who would want to mange this team?Maybe Krall could hire somebody from RLN. ?. This is a second rate team with a third rate ownership. I have been a fan since late 1950’s. Never have I been more embarrassed or disappointed in our franchise. Winning is hard in small markets but it is especially difficult when ownership considers winning impossible and much easier to hold its fan base hostage. Remember where are we going to go.
The recent sell off saved them money and bought them more time with the fan base. It was the path of least resistance. As the home of baseball we deserve better!!!!
Im still a Cincinnati reds fan but the ownership and whoever makes it hard, I don’t look forward to watching or listening as much as in the past. Is it me? Or the state of Cincinnati baseball.
