Hunter Greene
It’s been an inconsistent rookie season for Hunter Greene. When he’s been on, he’s been unhittable. But at times this season he’s been quite hittable and he leads the league in home runs allowed.
Greene has pitched much better against lefties this season than righties. Left-handed hitters are hitting for a lot of power against him, and they draw walks at a better than average rate, but Greene has held them to a .778 OPS. Right-handed hitters, though, are doing a lot better. Most of the difference comes in the power department as they are slugging .528 against him. Righties walk less, but also strike out less, while hitting for a higher average.

Pablo Lopez
A pitcher you may not have heard much about, Pablo Lopez has a 3.21 ERA over the last three seasons in 50 starts. He’s been very good and he’s getting it done again this year. His splits aren’t that different overall with right-handed hitters having a 13 point advantage when compared to lefties. Lefties do hit for a little more power, while righties get a few more hits overall.

News and Notes
Jonathan India would like his grand slam baseball
To the fan who caught my first career grand slam last night, would love to make a trade for the ball…??
— Jonathan India (@JonathanIndia) July 26, 2022
Pham, Votto, Moose as 3-4-5….
Well Barry did say last night that Joey is tinkering again with things
34-36 since their awful start. Something must be working.
Seriously I do believe if Reds had a bullpen they would have 10 more wins at least. Like was mentioned though a day or so ago. Seems like this team or organization does poorly and then plays better after the season is basically over and no chance of a playoff spot. Why, who knows but it does seem to happen that way.
1970 Reds started 70-30 and finished 102-60. Finished 32-30 mostly in Riverfront.
1973 Reds started 39-37 and finished 99-73. Finished 60-26 (thanks PH Hal King).
1975 Reds started 20-20 and finished 108-54. Finished 68-34 (thanks 3B Pete Rose).
1990 Reds start 33-12 and finished 91-71. Finished 58-59 (thanks Nasty Boys).
Those teams all had a competent team manager. The same can’t be said of today’s Reds.
Yea that’s the difference between those teams and this one. LMBO!!
The first three teams mentioned were chock full of hall of famers.
I guess I am a sour puss, because I am just not buying that this team is much better than they were when they were 3-22.
After that miserable start, the team has been playing under no pressure at all. It’s easier to play well when there are no expectations.
We have seen it with this team in years past, they get off to a bad start, fall out of the race early, and play close to .500 the second half and we get all excited about the next season. The next season comes around and it’s rinse and repeat.
The Bengals did that for a decade straight.
Do I think this team is as bad as 3-22? No.
Do I think they are a .500 team? Again no.
They are somewhere is the middle. Probably a team with some luck could win 70-75 games. Without some luck, they are 21 games under .500.
The Bell apologists here keep discounting the importance of good management, hiding behind roster disparities The 1970 Reds were hardly the BRM. The Phillies, the Blue Jays and other having fired underperforming managers this year. The nepotistic Reds just keep doubling down.
Others have made the salient points, LDS, but I’ll add, as I have before, that when Sparky and Lou had bad teams, they had bad records. This blows your contention out of the water. You’ll keep repeating it, God knows why, and I’ll keep repeating this, God knows why. We’re both allowed to be tiresome.
Ashcraft and Lodolo came off the break with strong performances. Greene had some time to
Work on things. Its the Marlins. I think he bounces back.
This lineup is out of current standards, as 3 RHH are opening followed by 3 LHH and finally 2 RHH and a SH….I think Bell is a little bit inflexible being stucked with Pham at 3rd spot and an overvalued Moose as 5th batsman
Let’s see what Greene looks like, especially without TySteve calling him. And on that note, let’s see if Pap can put his issues from last night behind him. Good, bad, or indifferent he’s part of the catching crew.
Just about time to Kick this Pig … or Minnow!!
That shot of the near-empty stadium behind the guys during the pre-game is telling. I seriously doubt many Phish Phans are in the house tonight. Will be interesting to see the liar’s poker attendance number for the night.
No matter who’s pitching today, what the rest of the lineup looks like today, or who’s been hot or cold lately, Pham hits third. It’s hard to believe any serious person who’s actually giving any serious thought to the lineup would somehow wind up making this same decision each and every day.
Yep. A little depressing that we have to witness this for at least a few more days. You have to figure somebody will need him, so he’ll move. But the batting 3rd is baffling. And it’s not due to long-term loyalty like our #4 hitter.
Bell must be afraid of jinxing Senzel by moving him up.
I guess we won’t be facing Astudillo on the mound tonight. Loved that 40 MPH knuckle-ball.
11 pitches … not a bad way to start.
Let’s pick up right where we left off yesterday. I believe RoY needs a triple. He also needs the GS ball he hit, but that’s another story.
And he whacks ball 4 the other way for a bleeder of a single. Great focus!
Pham … (hard eye roll)
Maybe Pham threatened to slap DB if he didn’t hit third in the lineup?
+100 that would make sense
Nah, all he’d have to do is remind Bell that he’s 34 and unlikely to make any club’s Hall of Fame.
Just checking to see if the eyeroll characters work
😎
Seems to me Joey is racking up the backwards K’s lately. I hope I’m wrong. I really do.
I wouldn’t mind seeing a batting order of India, Senzel, Solano and Drury clean up.
That would make too much sense.
If Bell is locked in with Slappy and JV where they are,
I’d be happy with Senzel batting ninth.
Then it would be Senzel, India, Drury often enough.
Just like last night Pham and Joey strikeout with India on second base.Maybe we score 11 and they get a single each after we get up by 5 or 6.I will take a repeat of that again but its so hard to watch sometimes knowing neither one of them should be hitting 3 or 4.Guess we play on.Solano should DH.Dude should never set and watch.
My mistake Pham struck out with India on third.Never even made contact.
OK, definitely a wild pitch, but Pap looks like he did last night just waving at that one instead of trying to block it.
We know Pham and Joey will play and we know the reason why they will play but Bell surely doesn’t believe he is putting the team first by hitting them 3 and 4.He needs to get his best hitters, not used to be but right now today, the most at bats.He hit Naquin lead off the other night and now he hits 6th tonight. No sense to the order.
If I scratch my head anymore due to DTBell’s lineup decisions, I’ll probably break my fingernails. Or go bald.
Already there. Hahaha
If I hear Sadak talk about another 100 mph pitch I’m gonna scream. Shows he doesn’t realize there’s a difference between a thrower and pitcher. We all know that but Sadak doesn’t I guess.
Explain how Greene isn’t a pitcher and do it in detail that makes it very easy for us all to understand.
I did see that Greene did throw a changeup in there.
Went into the dirt but it is a noteworthy.
A legacy of great Reds’ changeup pitchers from Soto to Castillo…two of the best.
Would love to see Greene join that select club.
Watch the difference between Greene and Castillo or even Lodolo. Pretty obvious.
3M being 3M again … another hard eye roll
4 straight strike outs, come on boys.
Sorry, guys. Those all look to be strikes. I know we love to rank on the HP Chumpires, but so far tonight, he’s getting it right (at least as I see it).
Lopez throwing it..
Pham did actually bait that there nice work
Make that 5 straight and Farmer never swung.Lopez is good and his numbers say he is good so I would take a cut just for the heck off it.If they aren’t strikes then somebody get tossed for arguing.Do something other then watch.
Game day shows Greene using a change up? Is this accurate?
I’m pretty sure I saw one for a 3rd strike. 91 MPH at the top of the zone. Froze the hitter.
Excellent, hopefully he can master that pitch..
It only helps if they see another speed off the fastball other then the slider.Doesn’t even need to be a strike just down and at a different speed.Hunter is a work in process and all know he needs one more pitch as does Ashcraft.Promising future for both at 22 and 24 years old.
Pham definitely has a good arm. Somebody needs that for the chase.
Please somebody call the Reds and take him.
Settled in nicely that inning. He owes Pham dinner somewhere nice. Here’s hoping we can get 6+ out of Hunter tonight.
Time to get the bat off the shoulder and put the ball in play.
Aquino goes deep first time up tonight.Come on August 2nd.
But can he hit mlb pitching. That is biggest question
Hit consistently. We know he can sometimes. But more and more it appears that magical first month was a mirage.
Well we did put it in play that inning.
Senzel smacked it hard.
Another nice inning of work by young Jedi Greene
Pitching duel breaking out at the band box.
Glad the veterans in the 3 and 4 hole are taking a lot of pitches so Greene can rest.
Something going on with Senzel’s shoulder.
He’s hitting on the button lately.
Are you referring to his throwing?
Pitching duel is over but still like what Greene has done tonight.Work in process but its always baby steps with young pitchers.
Agree
Still….five innings and no walks for HG.
That’s a trend worth continuing.
The two runs are my fault. I went for my evening walk (rain shortened).
Well gets us 3 this at bat and all is forgiven.I skipped mine this morning and was going this evening but well you know.
I did my morning routine. Saw the most beautiful rainbow as I started. I was heading West and soon found out the rising sun was reflecting of the rain curtain coming in. I finished my 2 miles and was soaking wet.
Nice AB by 3M to run it up to 9 pitches and them mash it over the fence.
Thats one so get us 2 more.Got to believe you can do it Mark.
Moose making moves
This AB should tell us how Senzel is really feeling.
Looked like he got a good swing at it. We shall see. That was some jam on his shoulder on that play.
I’ll be honest, I never liked the move of Senzel to CF.
Sure, he’s athletic and has good coverage, but he’s a brave bull out there, and the diving / wall or Pham or Naquin crashing is only going to shorten the man’s career.
His brief tenure at 2B a couple years ago also saw him very productive at the plate.
ESPN says he lined out to short
SS made a pretty good play to snag that. A couple inches higher and it goes into LF for a single.
I never dont watch the Reds
But if Pham votto and Moose are playing in august and september hitting 3/4/5… i will change
Hope is why you watch
Lets get Hunter through the 6th and call him done for today.Great point by JohnnyTV in that so far he hasn’t walked anybody.
Not a bad start so far by Greene, lets see if the bats can pick up
Guess I should have not said anything about the walks but 1 in 6 innings with 7 strikeouts and only 2 runs is a good day for him.Lets pick up a couple and get him a win.
Pap takes two strikes and swings on one out of the zone.Just not a good at bat at all.No Kolo since he homered Saturday, now 3 games ago.I don’t know why guess it doesn’t matter but Pap has struggled the last 2 nights on defense.
Reds have a pair of sub .150 hitting catchers that Bell platoons LH / RH.
That’s playing some razor thin odds.
The bitmining of baseball analytics.
I thought so too but the guy that pitched last night was lefty I believe.
That was not a good inning at all.
Lopez is hitting corners and edges with every pitch in his arsenal. Changing speeds….tough to barrel him up tonight.
Guy is tough and has the stats to prove it.Let hope he makes a mistake or two and we can get him.
Good point.
Lopez is locating.
Hunter Greene is spraying the ball right now.
Interesting comparison.
Greene’s slow growth this season has been highs and lows, but mostly very engaging to watch…particularly in such a dreadful summer.
Time for Bell to get out the hook.
But inheirited runners? The curse of this bullpen.
Lopez is mowing the entire Reds lineup down. But Papierski seems particularly overmatched.
Kind of surprised Greene was sent back out.Not up to me but was surprised.Like to see him go out on a high note and he may still.
Farmer is not my choice right here.So I will shut it down and go away.Bell knows what he is doing and well I hope it works.I just think you go with your best right here to keep it close and Farmer is again not my choice nor would I have sent Greene back out to start the 7th.
Thanks, Buck. That should help.
Now to chase Lopez and get into the Minnows’ bullpen.
Buck has been solid since the recall.
I just like to say, “Buck Farmer”.
Billy Hamilton sighting
Reds cant hit righties
Last year Winker All star and destroyed righties. Votto top 5 OPS in mlb against righties
Throw in naquin and india and stephenson and Castellanos and a tough lineup .
This year Winker Gone
Castellanos gone
Votto .730 against righties
Moose sub .650
Incomplete line up
For old time shake, good to see Billy steal a base, but let’s not go too far and steal your way to score, ok Billy? Keep it closed bullpen. Offense will come alive in the next 2 innings.
Barry larkin delusional with his arrogant lectures. Hes saying Billy Hamilton speed changes the game. Guys a step different on defense because of a pinch runner
No. Good starting pitching changes the game Barry . Marlins pitcher mvp of this game . Good hitters with plate discipline changes the game.
Strike throwing bullpen arms change the game Barry
Sadak and Larkin are worst announcers in team history
Not even close
Speed is important IF he was able to get on base at a reasonable clip. But it’s nothing if the SP isn’t dialed in. Lopez was dialed in tonight. One PR by BHam meant nothing … not even a score.
I loved Larkin as a player. As an announcer … I loved him as a player. Sadak is another matter entirely.
I will say that this game is competitive
That’s some good pitching by Farmer to strand Billy at 3rd.
Why would you bat Senzel 8th and Papierski 9th? Let’s get the slowest runner on the team between Senzel and India. Maybe Bell knows Papierski won’t get a hit anyways.
Shaping up to be a tough loss tonight. Too bad we couldn’t borrow a couple from last night’s beat-down.
One more AB after we sit them down in their half of the 9th.
You’re not going to win with 2 hits. To be down a run is incredible
Nope. You certainly aren’t.
shame Greene did not deserve that loss
Good game, just happened to be in losing end today. Go fry them fish tomorrow Reds.
