After an improbable come-from-behind win last night the Cincinnati Reds will look to extend their winning streak to six games tonight as they take on the New York Yankees. Cincinnati will turn to lefty Mike Minor tonight to try and keep the winning ways going. The Yankees will hand the ball to Luis Severino to try and stop the big red winning machine. First pitch is set for 7:05pm ET.

Mike Minor
It’s been a tough season for Mike Minor. After missing the first two months the lefty has returned and has only had one start out of his seven that would qualify as being a good one. His ERA sits at 6.63 and he’s given up 12 home runs – at least one in every start he’s made.
Teams have limited the number of left-handed hitters they’ve put in lineups against Mike Minor this year. The ones that did get the chance to play haven’t hit much, but when they have hit it’s been with plenty of power. Right-handed hitters, though, have just absolutely crushed the ball against Minor this season – slugging .660 while also hitting .310.

Luis Severino
Another outstanding pitcher on the Yankees roster, Luis Severino has a 3.11 ERA on the season and he’s pitched every bit as good as that number suggests. His splits are interesting – lefties and righties both struggle to hit for average or get on base against him. But left-handed hitters make tons more contact against him, and while that hasn’t resulted in many more hits finding their way into the box score, they are hitting for significantly more power than righties are against him.

News and Notes
Aristides Aquino, Jake Fraley to begin rehab stints
Earlier today the Reds sent outfielders Aristides Aquino (calf strain) and Jake Fraley (knee inflammation and then toe injury) on rehab assignment with the Triple-A Louisville Bats. They’ll join the team in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Aquino is starting in right field tonight, while Fraley is getting the start as the Bats designated hitter.
Can they get lucky twice? Despite the 5 game streak, I think they need to Votto out of the #4 slot and Moustakas out of the lineup.
I’d agree with that. Votto down in the order as DH. 3M as an emergency PH resource (and hope you don’t have an emergency).
I read the other day that the Yankees could be interested in someone like Minor as a back end of the rotation guy. They also could be interested in a Pham or Naquin for help in the outfield. Let’s hope for a good night out of all 3. Living here in NY I was proud of our boys last night. Shut the mouths of many here.
Kentucky derby winner was an 80-1 long shot.
Minor,Pham, Naquin, and Solano on a 2 week streak….you got this!
Moose on the other hand…..he ain’t going anywhere.
Back of the rotation for whom? The Gary Railcats?
Can Reds win number 6? Can Mike Minor pitch a gem. LOL
Again seeing competitive baseball is what matters. Win or lose.
Inquiring minds want to know … 😮
Not so sure about a gem but Mike is familiar with Yankee Stadium having pitched for the Rangers and Royals.
Senzel pulled and Fairchild in. Wonder what happened to Nick
I don’t like seeing that one bit. It wasn’t done for no reason or on a whim.
Mid-back stiffness
With the As break coming up, no reason to push things. Get ready for 2nd half with all young hands on deck. Looking forward to see Fairchild
Good. I like the way Senzel is playing but interested to see Fairchild. Hoping he does great because the Reds need future OFs.
Minor is going to get abused so bad that someone will have to report it to social services…
Mark!!!! Regretting the Clete now I see
I would not have made it to the end, so it was easier to watch just the top of the 9th this morning. Obviously very happy with the outcome.
OK, Tommy. That works.
Alright Joey, show that you can play in the #4 slot
Machado out indefinitely. Wonder if Drury gets tapped for the AS game. My guess is Austin Riley might get that spot
OK, that also works.
Heads-up by India!
First inning run, Without the shift that is a hit as well…. RBI Votto
Great baserunning by India.
I get it Votto is going to play. But should he be batting fourth? Yeah he hit a ground ball to score a run but can’t believe the analytics numbers say this is the best for the lineup.
I agree completely. I thought DB was an analytics guy but he has two guys hitting 3 & 4 that are in huge slumps.
Analytics, I’m told, don’t attach much importance to lineup construction.
Then put all of your best hitters at the bottom of the lineup.
Not true GMR. Best hitters get the most at bats and top of the order..Now debating 3v 4 or 2v3 no…but 3 v6 or 4v 7 yes
Reds were world beaters when India, Winker,Castellanos, Votto were 1-4 last year. Those were the best 4 hitters.
Dusty Baker lineup mandate always was CF lead off and vets top of the order
Fairchild
Farmer
Votto
Pham
Moose
Farmer
India
Stephenson
Drury
Old-School: I did say “not much importance.” My understanding is that what you way is correct: Best hitters at the top of the lineup. We–most of us–grew up when there was much talk and micromanaging of lineup construction top to bottom. Almost always, things fall apart after the first time through the order, so getting best hitters more at-bats–a few more, at best–gives some advantage.
Run up that pitch count on Severino!
Went to bed early last night before the end of game and missed the dramatic 9th inning comeback win by the Reds! Checked the ESPN site for final scores at 6:30 am and was pleasantly surprised at the outcome! Good job by Ashcraft to push thru and put in 5 innings of work! Even better job by the bullpen! Hoping beyond hope that Minor can deliver a quality star against a loaded Yankees lineup!
Mr. Stanton was NOT happy with himself
Farmer Homer
And then THAT happened …
431 foot launch
Moose back to back
And there goes 201 …
Severino is headed for an early shower tonight if this keeps up.
And I recant my earlier comment about 3M.
As Fairchild sneaks one over as well.
Back to Back to Back Jacks……
Good grief!
What just happened X3?
You hang ’em we bang ’em
The Reds really need Fairchild to do well. Not much in minors that are ready.
What was that all about?
Hopefully they can add on and make the Yankee brass a little nervous about their pitching. Castillo pitches great tomorrow they might have to sweeten that pot for him.
Well, friends, I’m in a power outage (exact opposite of what we’re seeing at Yankee Stadium) and need to preserve my hotspot data. Switching to just the mobile feed so I probably won’t be commenting much if at all.
This would really be a fun way to open up against the NYY’s.
Staking Minor to a four run lead is only setting up expectations that he can hold a four run lead.
Somehow the recent walk-offs and catch-up ball was easy on the digestion.
Steverino seemed to get his head sorted out after the barrage.
I’d be surprised if we see much more scoring from the Reds.
Time for Minor to earn his keep.
Reds own the AL East.
Rays and Yankees 85 games in and tired and thought they could just show up.
This will be an over game and double digits
Farmer would be a nice addition to the Yankees at short.
Wow…. dare I ask…. are the Yankees running up the white flag
Unlikely, it’s early and they know if they are patient, they can get to Minor
Yes the white flag of success.
what is the opposite of a Toolban
Keystone Reds
What was Drury doing? Never did a run down before?
It looked like none of them had done a run down before. (KF probably knows how). No run at the baserunner by Drury, India didn’t run at him in the baseline then fired a needless rocket and Votto was “holding” on the runner at first and not covering second and Minor never got involved either. Yikes.
But DB will probably defend them.
Glad I missed this zoo! 😉 Realized we did not have enough ice on hand to get through the night feeding the ice water circulating machine for my wife’s knee and went to the Circle K for ice. Great timing.
First of all….don’t cut that ball….but if you do…
Drury has to run right at Rizzo.
Utter failure on the defense this inning….starting with the India error
The throw from Pham was short. So the decision to cut it was the right one. However, your point about Drury is spot on. Run right at Rizzo.
I know this is not totally on Minor…. but….. SMH… Lost the lead
He walked 2 batters, fell behind on several batters… so yeah not totally on him, but on him too.
And yet, if India doesn’t screw up, they’re out of the inning with no runs scored. I was mostly–for the first time–pretty impressed by Minor, and Judge may well have been, too.
And now here we go with the walks! Yes, the defense has been awful this inning but good pitchers bear down and find a way to pitch out of the inning! Case-in-point, Ashcraft striking out the last 2 batters to pitch out of a messy inning he created last night!
Except that he did get out of it: He induced a perfect inning-ending double play grounder. India butchered it. Minor persevered, and the infield let him down again with the botched run-down, leading to an over 40 pitch inning. Minor has not been good, but he gave the Yankees trouble last night. Too bad his infield gave him trouble.
GoshDarn Yankees 🙁
Too bad Mike Minor is in this rotation. He is probably going every fifth day in the second half.
I mean couldn’t they run someone out there every fifth day who was earning league minimum? I just don’t get what Mike Minor brings to this team.
I know the defense has let him down tonight, but there is no lead large enough for me to feel safe with Mike Minor on the mound.
And there goes the 4-run lead with both batters who walked scoring! Another early night for our $10 million dollar pitcher!
Minor has no business being in an MLB rotation
He has nothing and he knows he has nothing.
It’s over.
Someone from the media needs to ask Bull Krall directly what he was thinking when he signed him.
The same Bull in the same china shop who is evalutating talent to take in trade for the Reds current two best pitchers.
No need to ask the media, there are people here who still defend Krall for acquiring Mike Minor. Krall is lucky, the Moose signing is so bad, it far overshadows anything else.
Moose was on Williams, though … to be fair.
And there it is. Once again, Bell stuck with a guy until it blows up. Minor was staked to a 4-0 lead and blows it. DFA this guy, tonight before the end of the game. The error was the gateway but Minor has done nothing all year.
Agree 100%
“Stuck with a guy until it blows up…” ?
By simply allowing Minor to start a game you are setting that scenario in motion.
It is only a matter of time.
And whether he will squander a lead or set the Reds behind by an insurmountable deficit.
Minor has nothing and it amazes me that Bell and Johnson won’t accept that.
Chalk up another loss to a bad bad contract.
The Mike Minor trade seemed to be working out better for us when he was in the IL.
India blew it, mostly. The Reds–Minor is no exception–walk lots of guys. The problem with pulling him is that this leads to 5 or 6 innings for the pen: Out of the frying pan and into the fire, as we saw later in the game.
If Severino is injured, Castillo might look mighty tempting,
He should look pretty tempting either way, 29 years old, best change up in the league with a sub 3.00 era pitching n a bandbox.
Minor is not the problem tonight. Our defense gave the Yankees 6 outs. Bad teams find ways to loose.
Agree.
You’re playing the almighty yankees… need to be focused..
Any mistake against them, has a cost
Sure the Reds should be leading 4-0 or at least 4-2 if not for the poor defense, but Minor also walked 2 batters in that inning, including the lead-off batter in Gallo, and gave up 2 hits. Those are on Minor.
finally, some sense on this blog
That inning is an example of why we can’t consistently have nice things
Even as unpredictable as the Reds bullpen is I would be okay with Bell pulling any pitcher who walks 2 batters in an inning! In most cases these walks lead to runs that wipe out a lead (often prior to a HR which would otherwise be a solo HR) or result in growing a deficit that puts the game out of reach!
Reds blew this up like life expectancy in Better call saul
Minor stinks but the immediate goal is get to the trade deadline with castillo and mahle healthy and making as few starts as possible…If minor gives you a 6 man rotation for 2 weeks…so be it…
He also might be filler for Justin Dunn until hes ready.
minor wasnt signed to be a pitcher on a playoff team…he was added after the fact on a 1 year deal with no long term strings when the reds cut budget to 87 mil in October quitting on 2022 to give innings. Not defending him…but some people act like the Reds could have made the playoffs in march after Castellini cut payroll and roster in October.
But why not let someone earning league minimum eat those innings or several people earning league minimum?
Acquiring Mike Minor was a complete bozo move. There is nothing that can logically explain or justify it.
Nick Krall can’t help it if the owner says to cut payroll. Krall has to follow orders. But acquiring Minor, and to a lesser degree, Tommy Pham was complete malpractice.
If the owner had an inkling of how bad of a decision those were, Krall would have been fired by now. Good thing for him, Uncle Bob still doesn’t have a clue how to run a baseball franchise.
IDK VFL
Maybe Krall cut payroll to budget under orders in October and then was told by ownership dont only spend 68 million because we are getting hammered publicly and ownership underestimated public backlash and Derek Johnson said i coached this guy Minor at Vandy and Ill help him…. so get payroll back to middle ish budget of 105 mil but controlled for only a year so the optics look better and reds arent total cheapskates and not the A’s or Pirates. Castellini’s might have done that.

Well hopefully, it won’t happen again.
My theory is Uncle Bob gave Krall a number for the budget and said bring in whoever you want, but make sure you don’t exceed that amount. Krall wanting to make his mark on the team, cut payroll more than necessary so he could bring a couple of his own guys.
Either way those were terrible decisions. Minor, more so than Pham. But you are right at least he didn’t compound the problem by making it for multiple years. Now if he re-signs Minor I may need to take up drinking.
Pham was not a bad signing
Minor has not been god this year but, his defense most likely caused all 5 runs and 3 for sure every pitcher deserves better than that. Another note, India has struggled at 2nd this year.
Agree, Mark.
Goodness Sadak who cares about who was the tallest player to play CF.
Let’s see how long Bell rides this dead horse! My guess is after Minor has given up 6 or 7 runs!
India has had a tough year but so be it. He’s the future and needsreps.
Barry Larkin was awful in april hitting for years and horrific defensively on west coast road trips. No one remembers that and Barry wont remind you. Larkin literally couldn’t throw a ball to first base accurately at Dodger stadium for several years.
I, for one, remember those days Old-School
My only gripe with India is why is he struggling from the leadoff spot instead of lower in the order.
Oh my! Barrero just HBP in AAA game. looked like right lower arm/ wrist/ hand. Trainer came out but JB tried to ignore him and stayed in.
As I recall the prior hamate was left wrist.
Ouch!
And Votto once again, against a LH’er. Deliver, strikeout, or DP? Get your bets in.
And a ground rule But but but to tie the game
Wonder of wonders, he finally comes through – just like the old days. They should walk Stephenson to bet to Naquin
“Wonder of wonders, he finally comes through – just like the old days. ”
lol
This team doesnt quit and isnt afraid. Really like how they compete. They arent good. But some of them dont know that or care. Would really help the Reds trade situation if Yankees left this series like the Rays.
+1
So, how many of you on this site think the Reds bullpen can hold a one-run lead for 5 innings against the Yankees in Yankee Stadium?
I wouldn’t bet on it but the bullpen has not been all that bad recently.
You never know. Who expected them to win last night or score 6 so far tonight. Or for Moose to hit another HR? Black swans exist and sometimes you get to see a couple of them.
The Yankees will score more than 5 runs tonight, but the Reds may outscore them in the end.
My concern is with Strickland. After last night’s game, Bell hinted that he might use Stickland in place of Diaz tonight.
I dont have any reason to doubt they can until they dont. The bullpen isnt good so make your own judgement, but why any ML pen no matter how bad can hold a 1 run lead.
* -why
According to MLBTraderumors the Dodgers and Giants are interested in Brandon Drury.
Well…not only are we willing to trade you Brandon Drury, but we are also willing to throw in a versatile infielder, who has over 200 Career Home Runs!
I keep Moustakas at this point, why they’d dump him now is unfathomable even with their history.
I think there’s a greater chance that the Dodgers and Giants might pitch in to pay Moose’s salary on the condition that the Reds have to play him every day.
+1000
Maybe Toronto would be interested. Aren’t Moose native to Canada?
Related species that diverged in the past. A Canadian moose tends to be leaner, more athletic, and a bit faster.
lol @LDS +1
Both species suffer tick infestations.
Wow. That was really really bad.
Three straight pickoff attempts and you don’t get it?
Bush league mistakes today for the Reds.
Wow how can they call him out?
Because he was?
he probably was out.
It was close so I cant say much, but I don’t see much consistency from the ancient umps in NY in regards to indisputable evidence.
The Yankees feed had some pretty clear slo-mo replays
ya Reds feed was meager in that regard
Didn’t look it. Cowboy didn’t think so either.
lol, thats a hilarious shift
Buck Farmer did a nice job. 6 batters up, 6 batters down.
Great job Buck Farmer.
I’ve been begging for letting an effective reliever pitch a 2nd inning.
It worked this time…might not the next time.
Great job Buck
100 MPH sinker. Mercy
nasty indeed.
Come on man, Peralta can’t pitch two days in a row. That breaks a Bell rule (except when he forgets who pitched the previous game).
If you dont think Bell has pitched guys two days in a row, thats just insane.
He may have to tonight.
Heaven help us if he runs Kuhnel out there.
I allowed that he forgot. But seriously, it’s not his tendency, though he made exceptions for guys like Doolittle.
Hey, JohnnyTV, your wish is his command.
If you think the only times he’s made exceptions to that are with Doolittle, thats just insane. Hate the manager if you want, but you should probably criticize the stuff he does wrong and not just everything he does especially if its not even true.
There’s way too much bullpen analysis. These teams are 85 games in to a late starting season and gassed and injuries galore.. They are trying to get to the all star break. Compressed season with Double headers. Part of the reason Reds are beating the elites- tired gassed injured rosters limping to the All star break with overworked bullpens and starters being pulled or replaced.
Players wanted 162 games despite Mid March CB agreement to get paid. Well.. depleted rosters are going to get worse in August with injuries. Proactive teams will be adding players at the deadline.
Is that Kuhnel’s first clean inning this season?
Aaron Boone in the Yanks dugout looking at the Reds dugout and doing his best Paul Newman as Butch Cassidy, “Who are those guys?!”
Love it!
Senzel. Baserunning blunder. Again.
Not even trying to steal that was just his secondary lead. Caught napping, not what you want to see from a guy just in the game.
I think what we would have said back in the day was Senzel was faked out of his (men’s athletic supporter device) by Chapman’s juking and jiving.
He just does not seem to learn from his mistakes?
Concerning but guys will make mistakes sometimes no matter what. Mental mistakes like that are ultimately on the player, but the coaching staff should shoulder a lot of blame as well.
Courtesy of Lance McAlister (@LanceMcAlister) on Twitter
“Senzel has been caught stealing twice, picked off three times and made outs on the bases four other times. This year.”
He’s scratched for mid back tightness, then brought in to pinch run? If my back hurts, it impacts me when I run.
It was probably mild, it didnt sound so concerning to me when I read a bout it. Sounded like they were just giving him some time off.
hmm…not good baserunning
Where is House? Deshields is 3rd base coach.
Noticed this last night too.
covid protocols
The logic of pinch running Senzel after pulling him with a stiff back, then sending him on a steal is, well to put it nicely, perplexing.
he wasnt stealing
Still find inserting him in the game odd? Kind of like a kind that’s too sick to go to school but wants to go outside and play. Well that was the old days. Who knows the modern equivalent.
I think it was just a late scratch for something very minor, I’m sure he couldve played. Yall gripe around here for Bell for not giving bench players time and then complain when he does, its frickin crazy. Senzel’s mistake wasnt physical.
Actually 2020, my complaint is he gives the bench too much time and isn’t willing to commit to a line. up, regardless of individual perforce or lack thereof.
You should report him to the principal, LDS.
Fans in NY: We went to a boxing match and a baseball game broke out.
What do you expect from the armpit of NY.
Must have been a huge fight to hold up the games like that
Moose seems stuck at .210
Senzel base running isnt good. He also hasn’t played regular baseball in 3 years. 2020 was a shutdown season x for 60 games which he mostly missed having bad covid. He didnt really play in 2021 at the mLb level at all because of injuries.
He missed the first 2 months this year with Covid.
Bad baserunning for sure, but a guy who hasn’t played MLb baseball with regularity since 2019 isnt that surprising. Hes played more games in 2022 than he played combined since 2019. keep running him out there….they arent missing a playoff spot because of him. Moose and votto surely arent better.
who was this guy again….. why is he in…. where is DIaz….. where is Hoffman?
Gibault is an odd choice here
Gibaut again tonight… and Stanton hits it out… Game tied at 6 in the bottom of the 8th.
Putting Chapman out there in the 8th means that the Yanks want this one…
And then Boone runs out Holmes for the second straight night… and Walks the leadoff batter !
India’s strike three swing means what ? He’s clueless…
Chapman is not their closer and has been horrible lately
Pham flies to right, and leaves it up to Joey…
India got fooled on a slider, it wasn’t close but he read FB.
Thanks for the update on Chapman. He can still bring it.
With 2 on and 1 out the Reds don’t get any more… it’s on to the bottom of the 9th.
Just going to have to win it in the 9th again.
It hurts to love the Reds.
then strikes out the side, lol. The pitch to Stanton was up, but short porch is mostly why that was out. I haven’t seen him pitch yet so hard for me to judge.
Yankees broadcast: That was a HR in 1 of 32 parks
Just said Hr was only in Yankee stadium and no other park would have been a homer.
Gibault looked good
Just beat the Dang yankees. Doug, can we say Da*n Yankees?
Tough break for Gibaut – that ball just barely over the wall. Gibaut pitched well despite that one cheap HR.
Tough luck
Holmes got alot of benefit of the doubt for that 3 1 pitch
Alright Joey, one more for the good times
Their catcher isn’t even attempting to block balls in the dirt….just luck-scooping everything
Pham at the 3 spot is hurting this team a lot.
He swung at the only pitch that was hittable in that AB, and it was when he had 2 strikes. He probably shouldve been handed a walk, that 3-1 pitch was barely in the zone if it was at all.
Haven’t been able to follow much. From looks of box score and stuff a great game
Exciting
Its been great since I started watching.
And we get a favor right back
I hate make-up calls with a passion. Robo-umps please.
This ump might be the worst all year….even worse than Angel
Cubs getting done in by the O’s….. we win this we are tied for 4th place
Interesting choice by Bell of Gibaut and Strickland for the 8th and 9th innings instead of Strickland and Diaz. We’ll see if that strategy pays off. On to extra innings.
time for a new balk
1st and 3rd with Stehpenson’s single. Reynold’s to pinch hit for Senzel… What ?
evidently Senzels issue prevents him hitting
Ah, to what might have been… Reds get none in the top of the 10th.
Come on Kyle!
Man, 1st and 3rd with no outs.
Reynolds can’t take strike 1 right down the middle with the infield back
oh well…. overall its more of a fight then I expected from them
I don’t think they will want to play the Reds again… and there’s one more to go…
And the game ends on a wild pitch… Too bad for Diaz and the Reds…
The Reds did not play a good game tonight, to many mistakes to recap.
“too many bad mistakes”, Yogi Berra would say…
First WP was on TY….2nd one on Diaz
I despise the ghost runner rule. It eliminates the entire concept of earning the extra inning victory.
A rare point of agreement.
Be careful with that or confusion will reign. But, at least it’s as rare as the Reds winning 5 in a row. So that’s something.
Good fight tonight, I had fun watching regardless of the outcome. This team needs to clean up its mistakes if it wants to take that next step the players think they can make.
