The forecast for tonight’s game isn’t great with a decent chance of rain around the projected start time. But if the game gets started on time, the Cincinnati Reds will be sending Graham Ashcraft to the mound to try and make it five wins in a row. The New York Yankees will be sending their ace to the mound in Gerrit Cole. Scheduled first pitch is at 7:05pm tonight. Second Update: First pitch is now set for approximately 8:05pm ET.
Starting Lineups
Here are the lineups for this evening’s game:

Jonathan India – 2B | DJ LeMahieu – 1B |
Brandon Drury – 3B | Gleyber Torres – 2B |
Tommy Pham – LF | Anthony Rizzo – DH |
Joey Votto – 1B | Giancarlo Stanton – RF |
Tyler Stephenson – C | Josh Donaldson – 3B |

Mike Moustakas – DH | Isiah Kiner-Falefa – SS |
Nick Senzel – CF | Joey Gallo – LF |
Graham Ashcraft – SP | Gerrit Cole – SP |
Joey Votto is back in the lineup after missing the last week with back pain. Not exactly the best match up to return to, but being back and healthy enough to play is a good thing.

Graham Ashcraft
Left-handed hitters haven’t had much success at all this season against Graham Ashcraft. He’s held lefites to a sub .260 on-base percentage and a sub .270 slugging percentage this season. Righties, though, are lighting him up to the tune of a .337 average and a .516 slugging percentage. Part of that is likely due to the fact that his ground ball rate against righties is just 45.1%, while against lefties it’s 60.9%. One rate is only slightly higher than the league average, while the other one is an elite rate of ground balls and it’s difficult to turn ground balls into extra-base hits.

Gerrit Cole
One of the better pitchers in baseball, Gerrit Cole is good against lefties and righties and he’s good at home and on the road. With that said, he’s pitched better at home this season, posting a 2.31 ERA and holding hitters to a .196/.229/.326 line.
He’s been incredible against lefties this season, holding them to a .142 average, though they have hit nine home runs against him along the way. Righties have done a little better this season as they’ve hit .245 against him and as such are carrying a higher on-base percentage and slugging percentage.

News and Notes
Stuart Fairchild called up, Almora Jr. to the IL
Prior to the game today the Reds called up Stuart Fairchild from Triple-A Louisville and placed Albert Almora Jr. on the injured list. Fairchild was hitting .315/.354/.685 in 20 games with the Bats since he was picked up on waivers a month ago.
Reds lose Triple-A pitching coach
Seth Etherton, who had been the pitching coach in Triple-A Louisville, is leaving the organization to take over as the pitching coach at USC where he was an 3-time All-American pitcher and the 1998 NCAA Player of the Year.
Gonna be a tough series for sure. Could sweep the Yanks, could get swept. I will be satisfied with good baseball. 3-3 road trip would be a nice way to end the first half of the season.
Lets Go Reds!!
Also noted that Tyler Mahle threw today and is expected to start one of the first 3 games after the AS break. Castillo will get the last game of the Yankees series and then would be on 4 days rest for the AS game. Perfect time to throw an inning or 2 on the national stage and then give him another 4-5 days to make only 1start after the AS break before the trade deadline. Mahle can maybe get 2 after the AS break to reassure teams hes healthy. Of course, reds play all home games after the break until the deadline for Mahle.
Not optimistic about 5his series, especially with Votto and Moose both in the lineup
Why would anyone be optimistic about the 3rd worst record in baseball playing the team with far and away best record no matter who is playing? On the road for that matter.
^^^This^^^
Hanawi, you must not have received the memo. If it wasn’t for Joey Votto, the Reds would be darn near undefeated this season.
Not undefeated but likely better, marginally. Replace Bell, and they’d be better still. And get rid of Phil & Bob and they’d be a winning team.
Replace the entire roster with the New York Yankees and they would be 61-25.
Votto4Life – not with Bell managing.
All with the same players, LDS? Bartender, I’ll have whatever he’s drinking.
LOL greenmtred, it’s good stuff – observation with a shot of objectivity chaser. Bell isn’t a big league manager or a manager of any type.
It’s even better stuff than you realize, LDS: Completely erases objectivity.
History would suggest otherwise.
Booby Nightengale also has a good article up on Barrero and his struggles with lots of comments by Barrero. Reds feel he moves to much in the box so they are moving him off the plate and trying to quiet things ( Luke comment from prior) but say he’s playing great defense and say they are giving him time to work on things and confident he will figure it back out. Barrero says he’s grateful to play and he’s working hard.
Wow, so I was right that he is too far from the plate, but it’s intentional? Oof. His entire struggle is with the low and away slider. This is NOT going to help him.
Also said pitch recognition isnt there yet and not recognizing balls and so vulnerable. They said hes barreling the few good pitches. Sounds like he s not seeing pitches and plate discipline rusty.
I agree with that. He is definitely barrelling the ball when the put it on the inside part of the plate. If he does end up recognizing the slider, watch out. Although I’m not sure moving him back off the plate is the solution.
Nice scouting Luke. It does seem that Barrero’s set up in the box is an area of focus by the Reds and Barrero.
Hopefully, more reps helps his pitch recognition. Senzel was left for dead a month ago and hes seeing things well now.
Just wait until Alan Zinter lays hands on him. He will straighten out I am sure.
Barrero 1-2 with and RBI and a punchout.
Oh ugh. I asked in a comment yesterday about this. So, he his recovering from the surgery AND they’re fiddling with his approach. Sure, you should be able to walk and chew gum simultaneously, but this? Doesn’t sound like fine tuning or a minor adjustment. We’ll see him whenever I guess.
The game will not begin on time due to a weather delay
Thanks Doug.
Gerrit Cole struggled against the Reds when he was at Pittsburgh despite being also a star in that time but the Reds is not the same team and have other kind of lineup… Let’s see what happens…
What is the Almora’s injury? To be honest, he is in a deep slump recently maybe was playing hurt…
This series seems another version of one Goliat vs David fight…
Almora is on the Covid list
Wow, double whammy with Votto and Moose in line up. Boone did his old team a favor by not playing Judge
Good for Votto that he is back. But bad for the Reds’ offense that Votto is back. Reds’ first basemen hit 40 points higher, and created runs at a 33% higher rate while Votto was out.
Never thought I’d see people arguing to play Moustakas more. Good lord.
Well, Drury was playing half of the AB’s at first base.
No he didn’t. He played two games there and didn’t even stay there the whole time in one of the games. At bats – Moose: 19, Drury: 8, Reynolds: 2
Both Joey and 3M in the same line-up … I suppose it could work out if they actually get to play tonight.
First pitch now scheduled for approximately 8:05pm ET
Gerrit Cole is absurd.
Anyone name a good pirates trade in 5 secs?
They are awful
November 22, 1954: Drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates from the Brooklyn Dodgers in the 1954 rule 5 draft.
Robert Clemente,
Roberto. I hate Auto Correct.
November 22, 1954. Pirates draft Roberto Clemente from LA Dodgers in Rule 5 draft.
Well done.. you win the internet.
One more. 1959.
Frank Thomas (not the HOF one) to Reds for Don Hoak (All-Star 3B), Smoky Burgess (All-Star C), and Harvey Haddix (12 inning perfect game). Reds got three throw-ins (Douglas, Pendleton, Powers) also.
Pham no chance and Joey swings at the first pitch he has seen in over a week.Cole is really good and we will see he will just blow the slower bats away.Yanks are really full of power bats and power arms and are no doubt the best team in baseball.Astros are right there and then the Dodgers but they are a distant 3rd.They need another good starter and I know where they may find one for the right price.
Don’t like the body language early on from Ashcraft. He didn’t look confident after getting ahead of LeMahieu with 2 strikes. Looks like he doesn’t have confidence in his out pitch tonight.
This will be over very quickly tonight cause the Yanks have a big league lineup.
245 million spent + 22 million in luxury tax.
You can buy a few good players.
No doubt.Needs fixed of course but it won’t be.Yanks may win 110 games or close to it.
NKU vs Alabama 🙁
This is looking like a Clete after an off -day. Uggh
I think Rays are done.
Lets see if the kid can just settle down a bit and get out of this inning.
Tough 6-game stretch ahead for our Reds! Hoping for at least 2 or 3 wins against the Yankees and the Dirty Birds prior to the ASG break! I view the Dirty Birds as the Yankees of the NL.
GA settled down. Gotta be a little nervous as a rookie starting in Yankee Stadium against that lineup.
Good bounce back by the kid.You right this is big time baseball like we once played many many years ago and in the biggest of stages.
Speaking as an overall Baseball fan, the Yankee uniform is so iconic. I feel it has been defiled by the Nike Swoosh
Most definitely.
Micheal Kay and Paul O’Neil in the booth on the Yankees broadcast..
Good content.
Yankees paying Joey Gallo 10.2 million to bat .166. 10 Bombs
Interesting some on here talk about “old guys” well Yankees have plenty guys over 30. Kinda blows the “old guy theory” out the window. LOL
Ummmmm…..selection bias Kevin..
They have the best of the best of the best of the over 30 guys.
It’s the Yankees who buy the cream of the crop
I agree they buy the cream of the crop. Yet all I hear on here is the old guys. Same concept and to me isn’t selection bias. Let’s face it if reds were winning no one would complain about the “old guys”
I don’t even think Yankess will win world series.
Josh Donaldson would be getting eaten up on here if he played for the Reds.
Most world series teams have veterans with a small sprinkle of up and coming young guys.
So much for the Dayton Stampede. Elly off 2 days and rest of the guys done with college seasons.. Torres 0-4 with 3 K’s
McClain on the IL. These guys haven’t played a full season since 2019 and dont have experience.
Hard to interpret minor leagues post covid…..seems like a lot of guys heading down
Moose out here with an effort to silence the detractors
Pham no chance again with 2 runners on.Moose with a double but only gets to third on Drury’s single.
Senzel, who can go the other way, didn’t get Moose to 3rd by grounding out to SS. Might have manufactured a run otherwise.
Right as rain on that one.Had the slider to do it with too.
Frustrating to end that inning with a goose egg. I give 3M plenty of grief, but he hit a clean double (kind of rolled into 2nd) but his mates let him down. Should have had 1 run there. Going to make it very hard tonight.
Was kind of painful seeing him slog around 1st for that double. But, he made it. Perhaps the Keto diet is in order
Ahead on Rizzo and then lost him. Ashcraft is battling tonight. And with no run support, that’s not a good position to be in. Pitch count creeping up there.
Reds look tired
Maybe a little stage fright, too?
+1000
Ashcraft looked to me like he was Intimidated the 1st inning or was taken back on the big stage. His pitches were right over the heart of the plate. 2 runs in in the blink of an eye. Now Cole has found his stuff and looks unhittable.
Can’t walk hitters ahead of the bombers.Reds had the day off yesterday. If they look tired then its on them.Yanks played last night on the road.
Yanks were off yesterday
Well, I’m pretty tired. I’m thinking I’ve seen enough tonight. Maybe I’ll be pleasantly surprised come morning, but I kind of doubt it. Then again, the NYY’s have only lost 9 at home so far this season. I absolutely despise them, but you have to respect a stat like that one.
Night all!
Not when they have a $300,000,000 payroll or whatever it is. Good night Mark.
Unfortunate for Nick, slipping on the wet turf.
Bunch of ugly batting averages in that Yankee line-up.
But they are a “real” big league line up. LOL
Seems like .300 hitters are a thing of the past. Tyler Stephenson is the only one on the field hitting .300 tonight.
There is only 18 .300 or above hitters in the league. It was 12 about 2 weeks ago.
I was thinking the same thing. The Yankees might score big on us tonight, but it’s not like we’re facing a Murderer’s Row lineup.
Rizzo .228
Stanton .238
Donaldson .229
Hicks .236
How much are the Yankees paying for that mess?
You simply cannot start off an inning with 2 walks against a team as good as the Yankees! This Reds pitching staff, especially the BP arsonists, issues an obscene amount of walks at the ML level.
Bullpen night.
The Reds have no swagger. Nick C gave them swagger. You gotta have some swagger to play with the big boys
+1,000
Luck can only take you so far! Ashcraft avoided what could have been a disastrous inning but has now thrown 68 pitches in only 3 innings! A high pitch count is a result of the unnecessary walks! Hope he can pitch through the 5th inning before Bell has to pick his poison!
Miss bats Dennis! Soft contact not allowed.
Yankees are a different breed . They will make your starters throw pitches in order to get to your bullpen. They have done it for years.
If memory serves me the Reds had pretty good success against Cole when he pitched for the Pirates!
This ain’t the Pirates
Unfortunately true!
Ashcraft looked to me like he was Intimidated the 1st inning or was taken back on the big stage. His pitches were right over the heart of the plate. 2 runs in in the blink of an eye. Now Cole has found his stuff and looks unhittable.
Reds have a terrible bullpen. Last in the league by a mile. Yankees are 2nd. Even Wandy Peralta is having a good year. Reds have nobody even close to the Yankees King and their closer Holmes.
Our only chance is if they pitch Chapman…who’s been horrendous.
I know there’s not much hitting on the Reds front….Cole is really on his game. Sometimes you just have to tip the cap.
decient start by ashcraft, gotta think that this is a result of being at “yankee” stadium…. and it has affected their play
Sure glad Votto is back in the lineup. It’s time to retire. You have a lower batting average than Moose.
Tough watching Votto right now. Bell is doing neither the team nor the player any good by leaving him in the 4 slot. If he is going to play, drop him to 7 or 8 unless/ until he gets on a role.
This zone is suspect at best
Reds still in the game and send Ian Gibaut out to hold the fort.
Didn’t see that coming.
Amidst all the “Trade Castillo” hyperbole, it’s worth noting just what the Pirates received for Gerrit Cole.
A number of “prospects”, two who wound up on the Reds: Moran and Feliz, one who has dropped off the radar, Martin, and another, Musgrove, who only in the last couple years in the friendly (aka expansive) confines of Petco Park has developed into a solid pitcher.
Astros fans will recall that Colin Moran was a highly touted ‘prospect’ in the trade.
Let the seller beware.
I still think of that trade the Pirates made for Chris Archer: Shane Baz, Austin Meadows. and Tyler Glasnow … wow.
Exactly. Not too many prospects are can’t miss guys. And if they are, teams don’t let them go anymore.
Maybe the Pirates have a bad FO that cant evaluate talent
I dont think the fact the Pirates butchered trades for Chris Archer and Gerrit Cole lends any credibility to pumping the brakes on the Reds trading Luis Castillo in 2022.
True and true and unrelated.
That Archer trade was an all time lopsided deal.
It’s a risk but gotta take the chance. You know what happens if they don’t trade Castillo? They will be lousy again next year with a lot of old position players and very little hope for 2024-2025.
Cole,Severino and Cortes. The Reds might not score this series.
You might be right
Pinch hit Fairchild for Votto. Some times an old guy needs a push
Votto is struggling but that didnt age well.
no it did not
He obviously needed my encouragement But as I’ve said repeatedly, Votto probably has some life left if he’d give swinging for the fences and just put the ball in play.
I seem to recall that last year Votto attributed his good season to committing himself to hitting the ball as hard as he could.
no mercy. Holmes has a .48 ERA and he is getting boo’d
Welcome to NY
Holmes is struggling here. Come on Reds take advantage.
Another late rally?
How about Reynolds for Moose here?
Should be. Peralta is a lefty.
Solano….instead
this is why new york was giving information on what to do in a nuclear incident. There is a meltdown in NY
Wow…that turned bad for the Reds quickly
Give Aaron Boone credit….he pulled his great closer out of the game just like that
Atta boy India
Poor Mark with the premature Clete 🙂
They need to drop India to bottom of order.lol
Why though does Bell pull the Team’s highest average hitter when the prospect of extra innings looms? And Strickland or Diaz?
Probably because he knows things you don’t. They won. Against the odds and all expectations, they won.
This is incredible… India was swinging at everything, and Wandy gave him a pitch up to hit. Nice job Indy
Indy protecting the plate with 2 strikes. Something Pham and Farmer didn’t do on called 3rd strikes
Diaz, we hope.
Holmes had given up 2 runs in 38 innings….and the mighty Reds tagged him for 4
So much for that amazing ERA he had. They should have brought in Champman if they wanted to win. The guy would want to stick it to the Reds for trading him even after all these years.
Someone is going to massively overpay for Aaron Judge this winter.
Wow. Flipped it back and 3-2 bases loaded nobody out. Where is their closer?
So he melted down….wow?
Ugh, if you want to be a closer you have to through strikes son.
TOBTT Reds
OUT…game over
Diaz the closer moving forward! Don’t look back, Bell
WOW!!!!! 5 IN A ROW!!!!! LETS BE BUYERS!!!!
lolllllllll
Maybe we can pry Judge from the Yankees will probably go into full re-build mode after
Tonight. Of course, our top 75 prospects are untouchable.
Good job Men in Red!
YOU GOTTA BELIEVE! LOL
Wow, there’s going to be some embarrassed Yankees in the locker room tonight. The best record in baseball losing to the Reds has to be humiliating. Funny but humiliating.
Great DP turned by Farmer and India.
Yes, India with a great exchange, Farmer in rhythm.
Didn’t see that one coming, glad I didn’t go to bed.
Way to go Reds! What a game. Even my wife couldn’t believe it!!
5 wins in a row! Let’s keep winning boys.
That has to be the best win of the year, good luck to Mr. Minor tomorrow. Big game for the Reds.
Expect a blow out …
I’m sorry.
Wow- Reds baseball still entertains.
Yankees Dr. has medicine for them tomorrow….Mike Minor
Pick up the phone, Alexis! Edwin is calling to congratulate you!
Nightingale posted that the Yankees were 49-0 when leading after 8, prior to tonight. This is a black swan.
only 1.5 back of the Cubs
correction, only a game back, we are playing for 4th place tomorrow
AL East just cant compete with the Reds???
They are probably underestimating them. Could be a small part of the Reds success.
Very likely for those who look at the Red’s record and don’t follow them.
Well that is not the ninth inning I expected. That was fun!
Win 1 game in this series was the big goal I think… Mission accomplished… Good for India to finish the Yankees… Alexis Díaz giving the scoreless ninth sealing the victory.
Great come from behind W… A reverse-walk-off practicly…
Our bullpen is not as bad as what we’ve experienced this year, when (1) the team they are facing doesn’t know them, and (2) when they don’t walk batters.
And as the Great Yogi Berra said, “When it comes to baseball, you don’t know nothin’ “. The Reds score 4 in the top of the ninth and win 4-3…
About the Swagger, I agree. Will that happen this year ?
