The Cincinnati Reds (29-54) continue their 11-game homestand tonight at 6:40 PM against the Tampa Bay Rays (45-37). The Rays enter play on Friday in second place in the AL East and hold the American League #1 wild card spot (there are 3 spots this year).

Tonight is one of the best pitching matchups you will ever see at Great American Ballpark. Luis Castillo will be making what is likely one of his final starts at GABP against the AL Cy Young front-runner in Shane McClanahan.

News and Notes

-Doug wrote about Alexis Diaz being activated today.

Joey Votto hopes to return to the lineup this weekend.

Tyler Stephenson is in the lineup tonight for Louisville in what could be his final rehab game.

Conclusion

Nine games against the Rays, Yankees and Cardinals to conclude the first half! It sounds like an easy 9 wins for the Redlegs to me! Go Reds!

Who is the guy watching Votto hit ( with batting gloves and huge and presumably getting ready to take some swings) in the mark Sheldon tweet vid? Fraley isnt that big.

    • Jim Walker

Colin Moran is not in the Bats Lineup tonight for what it is worth or not. He has had an .850 OPS at AAA the last 2 weeks or so. Maybe on Taxi for quick availability?

      • Old-school

Moran listed at 6’4. Thats a strong possibility.

      • JB

That isn’t Moran. Looks like Fraley though

      • Jim Walker

I also noticed as the guy in the tweet turned a little but that he appears to have a full reddish chops/ beard which works for Moran too.

      • JB

Jim, I just don’t think Moran is that muscular (bulky) . Maybe AAA food is better. Lol

      • Old-school

        Whoever it is is jacked

        Frakey is listed 5’11 195

        Votto is 6’2 220

        That guys shoulders are huge

      • Bet on Red

maybe Fraley found a weight room

  2. Reddawg2012

Anyone else’s Bally Sports reception being kind of glitchy?

    • Old-school

Had that the other night and new TV so similar issues

    • Mark Moore

No score in the first, bur two VASTLY different pitching performances.

I fear an early BP tonight.

    • Jim Walker

OK so far on stream via Spectrum and their website via Edge browser.

  3. SOQ

Friday Night baseball in Cincinnati. Hey Phil, Looks like a lot of fans found somewhere else to go!

    • Daytonnati

The Bronson Arroyo band is playing a free concert in downtown Mason tonight.

      • PTBNL

THAT’s where all of the Reds fans are tonight! That explains it. Phil C are you there in Mason tonight too?

      • SOQ

I bet there will more hits in Mason than @ GABP

  4. Daytonnati

Downtown Mason, of course, being a contradiction in terms.

    • Jim Walker

I worked in Mason right across I71 from Kings Island for about 6 months 20+ years ago. Back then every time I would get to my work via a different route, I would think maybe I had finally discovered downtown. 😉

      • Daytonnati

As Gertrude Stein once described Oakland, “there is no there, there.”

  5. VaRedsFan

Sat of the year posted on the broadcast.

McClanahan has 98 strikeouts, ZERO WALKS, when he gets ahead 0-1.
I’m going out on a limb and saying he doesn’t subscribe to the Derrick Johnson school of pitching.

    • Mark Moore

So strikes are a good thing then

      As opposed to nibbling

  6. Votto4life

Need a good outing by Castillo tonight… get that era under 3.00. No injuries!

  7. Mark Moore

Choi almost resembles Vogelbach from the shoulders to the knees

    • SOQ

I was making some wisecracks about Voglebach’s physique last night and my wife responded “didn’t Babe Ruth look like that” 🙂 She won

  8. Votto4life

I didn’t realize Wander Franco was having such a blah year. Has he been injured??

  9. Mark Moore

18th mash. Got to love this guy.

  10. Tom Mitsoff

Pitch counts very high for both starters. We’ll be in the bullpens by the sixth.

  11. SOQ

Man, Farmer’s getting some wood on the ball, but just not quite enough

  12. Randy in Chatt

All right Reds fans out there (real fans are watching right now), what playoff contenders out there will be looking for pitching (ala a possible site for LC to go to). I want to look at their prospects. Anyone out there care to venture which team needs pitching the most? (not that I want to see Luis go) :(.

    • Old-school

Nl east and nl west and AL east

Big markets who dont want competitors to win

Luis castillo to big market coast team

      Red sox have tristan Casas

Elite hitter lefty 1b AAA top 15 prospect

Red sox dont like the 60 win Yankees

    • 2020ball

Keep an eye out for injuries mostly, because literally every contender can use Castillo. The ones with great rotations wont be as interested since they can focus on other areas.

    • Redsvol

Agreed. Dodger, Giants, Padres, Red Sox. I always think the Yankees prospects are over-valued. And for most part it becomes true. I also wouldn’t hang up on a Cleveland phone call. They have an excellent farm system and they may want to try to go for it this year – as long as we didn’t get too greedy. Their farm system is usually valued correctly and their pitchers usually become successful.

  13. Tom Mitsoff

    Castillo looks unhittable right now.

    • Redsvol

This would be the last start I would give Castillo before the trade deadline if I were Reds front office. Pitch Dugger in his spot the next couple outings. There is absolutely no reason to risk and injury to the player before you trade him. Keep him at 80 pitches max. I wouldn’t even expose him to the Yankees lineup next week.

Just like when New Orleans knew they had to trade Anthony Davis. They kept him on the bench for weeks until a trade was negotiated. That is what you have to do to ensure the talent stays at max trade value. Thank him for his service and tell him its a business decision. Buy him a first class ticket to Hawaii for the all-star break.

      • Redsvol

pick someone then. Anyone on the AAA roster besides Castillo. Heck Dunn should be back any day. Don’t pitch him again!

      • 2020ball

I keep pitching him, I dont think teams want a guy whos taken a forced break, they’d probably worry it threw off his routine. Plus thats what the clubhouse and himself would want. I see what youre saying, but why create a rift in the locker room over a “business decision”. That sounds easy to tell people but it would sound pretty ridiculous IMO.

  14. 2020ball

I like Pham. I’m actually surprised more people dont like him honestly.

    • Tom Mitsoff

He’s not a star, but he’s certainly not a liability.

    • JB

I like him and the way he plays the game. Ive always liked him on other teams.. Unfortunately he is 34.

      • 2020ball

I didnt say I wanted them to resign him, I just said I like him as a player. I certainly wouldnt complain if he were a Red next year.

      • JB

Oh I know that. I meant it’s to bad he wasn’t younger because I like watching guys play like Pham.

  15. PTBNL

BTW we have a Doug Gray dream pitching matchup going on between the Rangers and the Twins. You have Jon going against Sonny. 🙂

  16. Hanawi

Nice job Castillo. Time to take a seat, preserve that trade value and let the bullpen finish it out.

  17. Hanawi

Guess it is possible that Castillo is the Reds’ All Star rep, correct. Drury would be the other choice. So maybe one more start, then trade him after the AS game.

    • REdsvol

I wouldn’t pitch him again until he is traded if I were the Reds. He’s too valuable.

      • 2020ball

I think him pitching keeps his value higher

  18. Jim t

    EDLC and the Dragons postponed.

    Barrera is 0-2 with K.

  19. SOQ

Sad state of affairs that, once our players reach All Star caliber, it’s time to move on from them. Been this way for too long. Will it always be this way? I’m afraid it will under this ownership

    • Redsvol

SOQ – and I’m afraid it will be this way for any team not on the East or West Coast until MLB removes their head from their you know what and addresses the lack of competitive balance in the game. A Salary Cap is inevitable if they want the league to last much longer.

    • Jim t

SOQ unless the economics in baseball change I’m afraid that is our plight.

    • JB

Just irritates me that Castillo will be pitching for another team. Love watching him everytime.

    • Old-school

      Castillo is turning 30

Hes at his peak and the Reds arent winning this year or in 2023.

The pitching FA market- Robby Ray and Jose Berrios and kevin gausman all got $20 mil for 5-7 years thru age 35 + season

I love Castillo in 2022. Will you
Love him at 20 mil AAV in 2026/27/28?

      Thats the market

    • Hanawi

I don’t think that’s necessarily true. Problem is that the Reds’ development has been pretty poor so that they don’t have a team around him at the moment. No sense in extending Castillo unless they are competitive. This was particularly true with international position signings. That seems to have improved if one is looking at the guys in Rookie and Low A. Right now, they have like 2-3 guys that are part of a winning team in 3 years at the MLB level.

  20. Mark Moore

Nice outing by Castillo. We need to appreciate them while we can. Likely not many more wearing Red.

  21. dhmorgan

There’s a lot of speculation that the Reds will trade Castillo.
I don’t agree with that, but if they do trade him, please let it be to a team that can put some numbers on the scoreboard.
Castillo should file suit against the Reds for lack of run support.

  22. LDS

Just checked in on the score. Reds not doing much again. But Castillo? That’s what a real quality start looks like. If Krall can’t work out a serious game changing trade using Castillo, run him out of town.

  23. SOQ

I agree that the cards are stacked against us here in Cincy, but in St. Louis, those Cards seem to manage somehow 🙁

  24. Redsvol

Man, I know Nick showed it in the pre-game notes but has anyone looked closely at this Rays pitcher’s statistics. This guy is phenomenal! A WHIP of 0.81 this year, 133 K’s in 98 innings. Where do the Rays find them and how do they develop them??? Why aren’t all MLB teams throwing $ at their coaches and development staff to get them to come to their team?

And how did we let current Rays relievers Matt Wisler and Brooks Raley get away from us (shakes his head). Both phenomenal relief statistics and low salaries!

  25. Hanawi

Interesting that the Reds ran Castillo out for the 7th and the Rays did not with McClanahan. Both were basically at the same pitch count after 6. Difference in faith in bullpens or long-term outlook for the rest of the season?

  26. LDS

I know Solano has some fans here. But beyond being more expensive and 7 years older, I’m not sure what advantage he provides over Schrock?

    • 2020ball

The advantage of actually performing better?

      • LDS

Stats don’t bear that out. Schrock has a measly 25 PAs since his return, prior to being sent down. Solano has more than twice that and is delivering a bit less than average performance.

      • 2020ball

Schrock’s more useful as an OF and performed well last season, so I like the guy. The Solano signing confused me at the time and still does, but since he’s here and been around league average thats a plus for this team. I mean, are you suggesting they DFA Solano and ruin their infield depth? What are you suggesting I guess I dont really know. If they’re the same player why not keep both.

      • LDS

Trade him if he has value. Keep him the rest of the year if not. Quit pretending this isn’t a rebuild. Dump the old guys and play the younger guys. I realize that Votto, Moustakas, and Minor are eating almost half the payroll. But at some point, a mature organization says you know what, we screwed up and we’re going to cut our losses. Goodbye Moose. Goodbye Minor. Joey let’s make a deal so you quit eroding your history. But , no that’s not the Reds.

      • 2020ball

Well if you wanna trade those kinds of guys, then you need to play them.

      • LDS

If you go with the “proven” argument then , of course play all the old guys. Who needs a draft, just sign guys off the waiver wire.

  27. Old-school

    Pretty good baseball game tonight

    2 elite pitchers

Pretty clear elite SP is still the foundation and Reds need to plan for that in 2024… why the payroll needs to be cleared of moose and votto so 2024 can fill bullpen holes and SP and hitting shopping . Reds are going to need to sign multiple players … just not in 2023.

    • JB

This is why you don’t give 64 million dollar contracts to average players. They prevent you from signing your best players and having to trade them.

  28. Mark Moore

Senzel continues to impress. Too bad we couldn’t score.

    • JB

Not sure why we didn’t pinch hit for Papierski there with a lefty.

      • Redsvol

        that was some inferior baseball by our Reds in 7th inning;
        – 2 men on 1 out.
        – we are not a good hitting team.
        – rays are very good pitching team.
        – Almora can handle the bat, why not hit and run. Move the runners , put pressure on the defense. Take a chance at a mistake!
        – Or, Almora needs to focus on hitting to the right side of the infield. Instead he hits it to left side of infield.

  29. Old-school

Castillo and Diaz pitching at elite levels

What a pitching performance through 8 against a perennially good NL East team

      • Old-school

Hate to lose Castillo as SP is still #1

But a great game through8 .. looking bullpen vulnerable after diaz but we we all know that already

Like the Rays- reds are going to need to find a way to turn over rosters every few years with drafting developing and trading and acquiring young talent

        Rays do it

  30. GreatRedLegsFan

Playoff type of game, long time. Almora Jr. back to his old self.

  31. SteveO

Watching the Rays reliever reminded me of Jimmy Herget. He’s doing well with the Angels

  32. Bet on Red

The Rays have a good pitching staff there…. this is looking like extra-inning teritory

  33. Tom Mitsoff

I might walk Paredes here to face a .196-hitting catcher.

  34. Votto4life

Great outing by Castillo. He is doing his part to thank the Reds after many fine years of service. It scares me every time he takes the mound that he is going to be injured though. Find the best deal and take it. No need to fool around.

If the Red’s front office is really trying to determined if we can be competitive next season, we are truly hopelessly lost.

    • JB

Reds would have to spend alot of money to be competitive next year.

      • Votto4life

I agree. They would have to spend a lot of money AND the right players would have to agree to the play here.

The Reds could sign Carlos Correa, Aaron Judge, Edwin Diaz and extend Castillo and Mahle. I suppose they could be competitive next season. Somehow, I don’t see ownership choosing that path.

I’m afraid the Reds are going to have a difficult time attracting free agents, even if they would be willing to spend the money.

  35. JB

Adam pitches like he should be in the Reds bullpen.

  36. Old-school

Anyone who had Nick Senzel June 1 as the Reds third highest average hitter on July 8 raise their hand?

  37. Mark A Verticchio

Solano , Pham and Almora are doing nothing. I would rather see younger guys. Throw Moose in that group as well.

    • Tom Mitsoff

Moustakas just struck out on three pitches nowhere near the strike zone.

  38. Bet on Red

Moose looked like straight trash there…. I was right, Extras it is

    • VaRedsFan

And he has to be the ghost runner in the bottom half

      • Doc

They may call Moose a ghost runner but I doubt he’ll be invisible to anyone!

  39. Old-school

    After 9.

    Reds Rays both 1-4-0

    Good pitching duel.

  40. JA

    You need one run only
    Play small ball !!!!!!
Bunt to move the runner ro 2nd w 1 out!!
But have a double play instead

    • Gpod

put someone up that can bunt & move the guy over & have 2 shots to knock him in
That used to be what happened in that situation….now managers like Bell are to “smart” for that kind of strategy

  41. Joe P.

Moustakas down swinging on 3 pitches – none of which were close to being a strike. That may be the single worst at bat I’ve seen all season.

  42. Doc

And then you send Moose up to PH with 2 outs. No you start the 10th with him on second base where it takes three singles to get him home!

  43. Old-school

Tyler Stephenson is one of my fav guys….but hes like 1-9 with 7 K’s the last 2 nights. Maybe this baseball hitting thing is hard and needs hundreds of at bats in a row to get in a rhythm and so the real decision is who gets those 200 at bats in a row?

    • VaRedsFan

Hard to really dig in and concentrate when you know you will be called up tomorrow….grasping at straws theory

  44. Bet on Red

if it holds that is a game winner by farmer

  45. VaRedsFan

He clearly blocked the plate….and he looked safe.

    • 2020ball

Yes to both. I thought they’d overturn it for sure.

    • 2020ball

There really wasnt an angle for both his knee and his foot, so I guess it came down to their interpretation of the rule.

  46. Joe P.

You just know they’re going to give the Rays a run here. Farmer couldn’t get enough on that throw.

  47. Bet on Red

lost internet connection for a minute, i see it was upheld?

  48. Old-school

I think it was a solid baseball play and the replay review got it right.

    Good game getting better.

  49. SOQ

Farmer gets a free steak dinner @ Ruby’s for that inning

    • Tom Mitsoff

The Reds escape that situation with no runs scoring about 1 percent of the time. Now how about a hit? 🙂

  50. Joe P.

We caught a break on that replay review and I’m glad because a game this tight shouldn’t be decided by overturning a call on a play like that.

  51. Indy Red Man

Will you guys walk this thing off so I can get paid $$

Both starters 6+ Ks apiece and Under 9.5

  52. Tom Mitsoff

There is no way in you know what that I bunt Senzel here.

    • Tom Mitsoff

Now you have to hope for Almora, Papierski or Votto (pinch-hitting) to deliver.

    • Old-school

He did his job and if Almora does his…reds win a great game agasint a good team

      • Tom Mitsoff

Almora has been swinging wildly at everything all game.

    • 2020ball

I wouldnt bunt there either, it worked I guess

  53. VaRedsFan

I like the bunt when you need exactly 1 run.

  54. JA

    Wow.
What a paradox. Stellar pitching along the game, decided bu a balk at the end!!

  55. LDS

Well, it worked out but when was the last time before this that a Reds player laid down a sacrifice in extra innings? And why with the team’s hottest hitter at the moment?

  56. SOQ

Had tickets in the nosebleeds. Gave them to my son. He saw a great game

  57. Joe P.

    A walk-off by balk.

A balk by the former Red Wisler, who was traded (along with Lucas Sims and Preston Tucker) to the Reds back in 2018 by the Braves in that Adam Duvall trade.

  58. Daytonnati

I’ll take it, but this game deserved a more fitting end.

  59. Dennis Westrick

One of the 13 ways to score a runner from 3rd base! We’ll take a win any way we can get it!

  60. TR

I would have preferred at least a flyball to end it all, but that was a good baseball game.

  61. Beaufort Red

Man, Reds lose people complain. They win a crazy game people complain the way it was won. There’s no way to satisfy some.

    • Votto4life

It’s hard to give the team the benefit of the doubt this season.

    • Joe P.

You want to win fair and square. That call was ticky-tack.

      • TR

Not in my book. A win is a win; and a balk is a part of baseball.

  62. Roger garrett

Old guys 0-11.Drury homers again and Senzel 2-3 with a bunt to get winning run to third who was a catcher who pinch run for Moose which I find just hilarious. No way you would ever or should ever win a game like that.Top of inning was just as strange and game ends on ball which is rarely called at all.

  63. Kevin H

Really some complain about how they won this game? Good grief, a darn good game and a Reds team while not good, aren’t as bad as some on here suggests.

Oh and thank goodness for the ss Farmer who apparently is old. Great defense..

    • TR

Farmer is getting to the ‘old side’ of baseball but certainly not to the ‘long side’ of life.
