The Cincinnati Reds will look to bounce back after getting their butts handed to them last night in a 9-1 loss to the Atlanta Braves. Cincinnati will send Tyler Mahle to the mound as he looks to continue his turn around over the last six weeks. Atlanta will counter with Spencer Strider, who will be making his 7th start of the season after beginning the year in the bullpen. First pitch is set for 4:10pm.

Tyler Mahle

Over the last month plus, spanning back six starts, Tyler Mahle has been outstanding. After a slow start to the year he’s posted a 2.45 ERA in his last 40.1 innings where he’s allowed just four home runs, walked nine, and struck out 47. Right-handed hitters are finding more singles, but walking significantly less than left-handed hitters against Mahle. Both groups are showing off similar power numbers.

Spencer Strider

The 23-year-old has split time between the rotation and the bullpen this season. Today will be his 7th start and his 18th appearance in 2022, but all of his starts have come since May 30th. As a starter he’s posted a 3.68 ERA in 29.1 innings with 11 walks and 42 strikeouts.

His splits this season show that he’s been outstanding against everyone, but that he’s really dominated lefties. Neither lefties or righties hit for average or power against him, but right-handed hitters have drawn walks at a high rate against him. That’s about the best thing you can say about hitters in any aspect against Strider in 2022.

News and Notes

Justin Dunn and Tyler Naquin updates

Last night was outstanding for rehabbing Justin Dunn and Tyler Naquin. Dunn fired 3.0 perfect innings with four strikeouts for Triple-A Louisville. Naquin led off the game with a home run, singled later, and also walked three times as the two of them helped the Bats win in a rout. Video of both guys is available to watch here.

Bell with Votto and Moustakas in the middle of the lineup. Farmer really needs to hit today. I still say he needs to swap Votto and Drury and see if Votto can hit with Pham behind him. But the Reds don’t need another game like last night. I think Votto stranded 5 and Bell gave away 7. hard to win that way.

    • TR

And Minor did his best to get the Reds through the 6th. inning, and they’re still in the game before bullpen disaster hits.

      • LDS

I’ve lost count of the so-called QSs given away in the last weeks. I mean the Reds can’t win a no-hitter.

  2. Mark Moore

Votto at DH is a plus move to me. 3M with a glove on his … uh … hand … not so much. Plus he hits like Lou Brown’s grandmother, so …

I have few duties left today. The trash run and yard mowing are complete. I’m grilling pork chops (if anyone wants to stop by) and I need to pack for the trip to Chicago. Oh, and I’ll watch the game on the TV screen instead of the laptop … unless the cursing and raised BP show up.

Almost time to Kick this Pig!!

    • Old-school

Pork chops as well Mark. Strong work.

Reds better get the W tonight with Charlie Morton, Tijuana Walker, Max Scherzer for Mets ,Shane McClahanan, Baez for the Rays and then Severino and Gerrit Cole on the horizon.

Could see the June swoon turn into a prolonged July drought.

Joe Musgrove Padres is very similar to Castillo in age and hits FA this winter as well. He’s having a Cy young type season. He turned down an $88 mil extension earlier and now talks are off.

Good starting pitchers pushing 30 in FA get >$110 mil and past their age 35 seasons.

  3. Bet on red

I really don’t know, earlier in the season out of said Mahle at home is an automatic over but not so much anymore

  4. Mark Moore

Pre-game over. Sadly, no Annie today (or for a couple weeks). Switched to WLW audio because … Sadak-itis.

Cowboy getting a bobblehead and talking with Day was fun.

  5. Mark Moore

Bell saying Garcia is banged up. That’s why he’s not starting of late. They just interviewed him on WLW.

Just as an aside, I’m not sure the guy could have a more bland voice/presence. He praised Pham (without ever getting enthusiastic) and basically said little else of value. Mind you, I don’t expect much from him, but the plain vanilla approach in a manilla wrapper … I really like witnessing a bit more passion in a manager. Then again, they guys all “love him” so that trumps everything … right?

    • VaRedsFan

I have to agree with the blandness. It doesn’t mean he can’t manage, but I like a manager with a little fire, and communication skills. Like Francona, or Showalter.

I was hoping they would get Francona way back when…but Dusty was in the way at the time. One year later Dusty was gone and Cleveland already had their paws on Tito.

      • Daytonnati

Agree. I always thought Tito would have been a good fit here.

    • LDS

If you actually believe that. I don’t

      • Mark Moore

I don’t. I think the guys are tired of losing and growing more tired of baseball by the game. A few of them are waiting to get the call that they are changing uniforms. More than a couple are just cashing their paychecks at this point.

  6. Bet on Red

well that bunt surely worked…… FOR US lol

    • Mark Moore

Kind of surprised it didn’t draw a challenge, but either the Braves want to save them or they saw an out anyway.

  7. Mark Moore

OK, full props to Moose for finishing that DP. We give him plenty of grief, so a kudos is warranted. Not sure Joey would get that one.

Nice job by Mahle having the presence to know he could nab Swanson.

  8. Old-school

Farmer shaky again at SS. That was a routine 1-6-3 easy BP and he butchered the throw.

  9. Mark Moore

Drury over Solano kind of makes you go “Hmmm” … I was thinking Solano was pretty hot of late plus has a better glove at 3B.

    • Old-school

Showcasing Drury bat at the deadline to build his value. Good strategy. If hes an AS that will elevate his value .

  10. Mark Moore

Aragorn mowing our guys down. Surprised we ran him up to 15 pitches.

  11. Fred

Strider is what you hope Greene can become. Funny because they are both rookies and Greene was the #2 overall pick.
Same with Harris, their development is just on another level.

  12. VaRedsFan

Riley somehow hit that fastball, up and in, out of the park, like knew it was coming.

    • Mark Moore

Riley and Wisdom fall into the same category for me. I really don’t like facing them. Not one bit.

  13. Indy Red Man

Mahle 30 pitches nobody out 2nd inning. Bases loaded nobody out and they’re about to end the game in the top of the 2nd. Time to cut bait. This is just ridiculous.
He’s got a mental block at home or something

    • Indy Red Man

Wow. I hate hackers and the fact that Arcia is a hacker saved us there. Should’ve been bases loaded walk with nobody out. Good job by Mahle though to take advantage

  14. Daytonnati

Mahle gives up that homer and turtles.

  15. DHud

We’ve got Hyde on the mound today apparently…

I’m all in on finding the first buyer for Dr. Jekyll

  16. Mark Moore

You certainly don’t see THAT happen very often. Major TOOTBLAN by Duvall.

  17. JB

Atlanta tootblan. Here I thought the Reds were the only ones to have them.

  18. Bet on Red

well that was an interesting out

    • dhmorgan

I wonder if the first base umpire didn’t make an audible call — or if the runner (was that Duvall?) didn’t hear him.
In any event, it was a great fake.

  19. VaRedsFan

That was as unique an out as you’ll ever see, getting Duvall there.

  20. JB

Mahle 42 pitches through 2. Reds better score about 15 runs because the Bullpen will be coming in sometime today.

  21. Mark Moore

A tiny bit of redemption for Mahle. Those 2 whiffs turned out to be very big. The box score for the inning will be ugly but it won’t tell half the story.

  22. VaRedsFan

The reason Mahle’s fastball gets pounded (as well as Hunter Greene) is their inability to throw the off speed for strikes. Automatic take…wait for the fastball. Pound it.

    • Mark Moore

Too fast. Too straight. Too far gone. Too often.

  23. Indy Red Man

Their guy throws 100 and works top of the zone…unhittable. Our guy throws 100 and center cuts balls every inning. Not top of the zone…not in or out….but center cut on a tee for you blast me to the moon

  24. Old-school

    Braves can hit
    Reds cant.
We got 2 lefties in the lineup and both overmatched with easy K’s.

Maybe Mahle can make it a bullpen game………

    Bullpen is due right?

    • JB

Bullpen is due to get me to mow the lawn earlier than I want.

  25. dhmorgan

I’m not sure I saw that.
The Manatee moved like a gazelle.

    • Mark Moore

Two surprising plays by 3M today.

  26. Mark A Verticchio

I really think this team needs a new pitching coach, batting coach, and manager. They are just so far behind other teams on certain parts of the game, basically everything. Does anybody really think Bell will ever get another job after he leaves the Reds, in 20 years. HA HA

    • Mark Moore

Don’t make me award -1,000 points!!!

Seriously … not a chance as I see it. The overall approach is lacking. No, the roster isn’t great, but others have done more with thin rosters elsewhere. But not here. Not us. Not this season.

    • Votto4life

I think you are right, many associated with this team is going to have their careers stained. David Bell will probably get another job because of his last name and connections. I doubt he will ever manage again though. I doubt Nick Krall will work in the Sport again.

Truthfully, it’s been amateur hour for a long time, at least since 2015.

Castellini came in guns blazing and thought he was going to turn this franchise into St.Louis east. When that didn’t happen, he just seemed to give up. I think the Covid pandemic cost the team profits that it was accustomed to. The final straw was this latest CBA. Castellini became petulant when things didn’t go his way.

It would be best for the Team, City, Baseball and the Castellini family, if he would just sell the team. Hopefully, he has come to this conclusion and will make intentions known this off season. Because all he has done this season was to run off his customers with no hope of winning them back.

I’m sure Phil Castellini would rather wait until his father passes to get his greedy hands on the team. He couldn’t care less about keeping the team in Cincinnati.

My hope though is that the Reds will go on the block this winter and we can all start looking forward to the next chapter of this great franchise.

  27. VaRedsFan

Spencer Strider was in A-Ball last year…AA,AAA then MLB.

Let’s acquire the Braves pitcher development guy. That’s some money can be thrown around next year, since they aren’t competing. Make him an offer he can’t refuse.

    • Slicc50

That is exactly what I pray the Reds will do. Identify/hire a couple guys like that to develop the live young arms they draft!

  28. Old-school

Fair question- Moose with his 2nd nice play at 1b.

Who is better defensively at 1b – Votto or Moose?

I think its Moose if anyone watched that play.

    • Indy Red Man

I think you’re right, but its a battle for #29th or something. The fact they’ll make twice as many millions as HRs they’ll hit doesn’t help either.

      • Old-school

Moose and Votto will end this year at a combined age of 73. Both are still owed a combined $54 million in exit fees. Why you dont invest in 2023 and why you do sell all 2022 assets now. I’m watching McGarry in AA at first base. This guy can hit and might be 2024 Opening Day first baseman. Heck he might be there a year from now.

.302/.350/.640/.990 and he’s better in AA

Maybe Doug can shoot down my enthusiasm and hope.

    • Mark Moore

Better, yes. But it’s relative as Old-School noted. Neither are very good and we have others on the roster who would be better (and maybe hit a bit).

  29. VaRedsFan

Lucas Sims out for the year. Herniated Disc.

    • Mark Moore

Yep. Announced yesterday. Headed for surgery. Won’t see him or TJ Antone until 2023.

  30. Mark Moore

OK, Riley didn’t park it that time. Can we call that a small victory?

  31. Indy Red Man

Watching Mahle is like watching a neighbor cut 1.5 acres with a pushmower

    • Mark Moore

      +500

I used to do that way back in the day.

  32. Mark Moore

Pitch 85 and we’re not done yet, are we Mr. Nibbler?

  33. Daytonnati

And the Tomahawk chant breaks out in the friendly confines …

We know where the Braves fans are gonna go, Phil.

  34. JB

We are going to probably get 5 innings of bullpen. This could get ugly.

  35. Mark Moore

That ALMOST didn’t happen. I was thinking Drury was leaning toward 3rd and that would have been the easier play.

Making 3M work today, that’s for sure.

  36. Mark Moore

Drury in an oh-for-nine slump … but we’re showcasing him.

    • JB

Feel for Pham. All you can think of in that position is please ball don’t hit me in the face.

  37. Old-school

    Mets next
    1 day DH Pirates
    Rays
    Yankees
    Cards

This is a bad bad bad baseball team.

  38. VaRedsFan

Losing it in the sun is the most helpless feeling in the world. Happened to me twice in one game…still have nightmares. Pham got a little revenge there

    • dhmorgan

Right. Not to mention that you have that sun “spot” in your eyes for the next five minutes.

  39. Mark Moore

Riley almost got enough of that one. Nice play by Senzel.

  40. Moon

Mahle already over 100 pitches. Reds pitchers are so inefficient and throw a lot of pitches. Mahle at 105 pitches with 2 outs in the 5th and has only allowed 2 runs. All these pitches mean you have to go to the bullpen early. And does anyone really want to see the Reds bullpen in a close game?

  41. VaRedsFan

Nice throw from Pappy from his knees… made it close, since our pitchers don’t hold runners on very well.

    • Mark Moore

Swanson had a great jump. It was pretty close given that.

  42. Mark Moore

That’s about the most animated I believe I’ve ever seen DTBell. I like it.

Take control, Freddie. It’s your game now.

    • SOQ

He was a tad bit more animated when he went after Clint Hurdle. At least he got a punch in then. Thought we might see another one

  43. Daytonnati

Bell going for the 3-day suspension … he hates watching this crap as much as we do.

  44. Indy Red Man

Can you still pick up a base and throw it or did they tie them down after Sweet Lou?
Bell should pick up a base and throw it in the crowd. Atleast be known for something after you get fired

  45. Mark Moore

    Is 3M still sitting on 199 HR’s?

  46. JB

Bell got his money’s worth. Maybe his offense will wake up.

  47. LDS

Just checked back in. Farmer pulled for a pinch runner. Injured?

      • Mark Moore

Sorry – I was outside lighting the grill and kept hearing “beaned” from the WLW booth.

    • VaRedsFan

HBP in the hand…didnt look good

    • Joe P.

Hit by 100 mph pitch – left hand.

    • LDS

There goes his trade value. But it opens the door for Barrero. Why do Reds pitchers never retaliate?

  48. VaRedsFan

It looked like the ejection was premature….But I give Bell a little credit, for getting his money’s worth afterwards

  49. Mark A Verticchio

I am not a big Bell supporter, but i admire his effort to try and wake his team up.

  50. Indy Red Man

Moose says I’m multi-dimensional baby! I can K up and away and I can K down and in

    • Mark Moore

      Oh yeah!

All for the bargain price of … 😮

  51. Mark Moore

Ah, 3M … should we have expected something else?

  52. Joe P.

Hard to believe that’s only the second time that Bell has been ejected this year.

  53. Indy Red Man

Wonder what Strider’s Over/Under on Ks was? He’s a machine!

    • Mark Moore

Thrall and Cowboy are saying this is more than his normal. His command is pretty impressive. And that high super-heater … we’ve seen what that does.

      • Indy Red Man

He had a no-no 2 starts ago thru 5 I think with double digit Ks….can’t remember who it was against. He’s talented

    • Indy Red Man

He’s been super pesky lately. Coming around a little bit

    • JB

Senzel has been their hottest hitter of late.

  54. Mark Moore

OK, Nick. You at least helped push one across.

  55. Indy Red Man

I wonder how Pham can even hit with his eye problems?

  56. JB

Warren 12 pitches. As bad as the bullpen is, you have to send him back out there.

    • Mark Moore

With 4 innings to cover and only down 1, you have to hope that’s what Freddie will do. With that DH coming up, you need to use guys who are being efficient when they are being efficient.

  57. Mark Moore

Time for RoY to catch one here.

    • Mark Moore

Nope. Strider found some control again. Was hoping he was getting sloppier.

  58. Mark Moore

It’s about time to grill my pork chops, so I’ll go silent for a bit. Game is still on for whatever that is worth. And please let Warren have a 2nd inning. Please … pretty please … with Skyline chili on top …

    • Joe P.

Doesn’t mean he has to have a clean inning, right?

  59. MK

So when does a Braves hitter get drilled? Time to retaliate and take out a rib.

  60. dhmorgan

It’s still early, but India looks like he’s caught in that “sophomore slump” that we hear so much about.
Maybe not, but he’s really shuffling a lot at the plate lately.

    • VaRedsFan

Yes…he’s pull happy at the moment. He did get an oppo hit last night.

    • Joe P.

      Do you mean scuffling?

Shuffling is what Nolan Arenado does at the plate.

  61. Old-school

    Varsity playing the jv

    Reds dont have a bullpen
    Offense is horrible.

They dont have 1b or 3b or SS or #1 OF hammer.

Votto and Moose arent legit hitters. They are awful.

  62. Indy Red Man

Jolene Jolene Jooooolene. Whats over faster? The song or the K

  63. JB

1 hit and 12 K’s. Says it all right there.

  64. Mark Moore

2-1 was still a game. 3-1 was a stretch. 4-1 is out of reach barring some kind of miracle in the next 2 innings. Multiple miracles actually – the BP has to keep them at 4 and the offense has to show up.

Anybody heard anything about Farmer yet?

  65. Mark Moore

Am I seeing that our relievers have trouble working in more than one inning? Not working over an inning, but working across multiple innings. We just seem to see such variance batter over batter. Or we just see an implosion.

I know 2022 is a complete lost cause. But it’s still frustrating to see this race to the bottom almost every game.

    • Indy Red Man

I suggest if you must watch then drink and gamble. Or atleast gamble.

I had a huge bet on Braves Over 5.5 last night with Minor pitching. 2 outs nobody on 7th inning and I still needed 4 runs, but the Reds pen are truly talented arsonists

    • Joe P.

I wish I had a $100 for every 4 pitch walk Reds pitchers have given up. I wonder if anybody can give me that stat? How many 4 pitch walks have the Reds issued this year and where do they stand in that stat compared to other teams in the league?

  66. JB

Reds are about to lose 10 in a row at home. Who would pay good money to go watch them?

      • JB

Lol I’ve noticed. Wouldn’t you? A guarantee win and great seats.

    • Mark Moore

What else are you going to do?

I believe our own MBE answered that question.

  67. dhmorgan

Leaving this snoozefest for a few minutes, I switched over to the Oakland/Mariners game.
And who was at bat? Geno Suarez.
Then they displayed a graphic: who has the most home runs in MLB since 2018?
    Suarez.
    I would never have guessed…

    • Mark Moore

I talked to a Mariners fan this morning at the park before my walk (petted his Golden as well). I was wearing my Red hat. I told him Geno was a 3-true-outcome guy and Winker was more of a pure hitter.

  68. JB

    15 k’s out of a possible 24 outs. Horrendous

  69. Mark A Verticchio

This will be 10 home losses in a row, it’s going to be a long month of July. I really hope Bell doesn’t survive for his own sake. Whether you like him as a manager isn’t important he is a good man and nobody deserves this kind of punishment. Bell gave it his all to fire this team up today and these clowns have responded with 1 run on 1 cheap hit. I have been as hard on Bell as anybody but, at some time the players have to be held accountable and these last few games it looks to me like a majority of them are just going through the motions. The 3 I think are giving the most are Pham, Senzel and Drury. Notice I didn’t say India, I am just not seeing it from him. I am sure it’s hard playing for this team right now but have some pride boys.

    • JB

There better be alot of trades on or before August 2nd.

    • Mark Moore

And Drury is in a mini-slump at the moment.

  70. JB

Bell- “Strickland is my closer “.
Strickland-” So I’m never going to pitch again?”

  71. Mark Moore

Well, the pork chops were excellent. Nothing quite like charcoal. I’ve switched completely away from propane except for my flat-top (which I used for breakfast this morning).

  72. Mark Moore

Do you run for Joey? Do we even have anyone to do that?

    • Mark Moore

Now we see Solano. M3 is denied another shot at breaking the 199 curse. I’m not disappointed about this choice.

      • Mark Moore

In the olden days, we’d have Mikey Biceps 🙂

  73. Mark Moore

Actually a little lucky to get that HBP. I think it was going to the wall.

    • Mark Moore

Just by a couple degrees. No wind today to help it either.

  74. Mark Moore

    Nope, nope, nopity-nope-nope.

I’m out for a while. We head to Chicago tomorrow and I’m not taking the laptop. I may or may not watch a little bit on my phone, but that makes commenting difficult.

Nowhere to go but up, right?

  75. Mark A Verticchio

One hit and if the center fielder had read it right it would have been caught. I will give Almora credit he just missed a game winning grand slam.

    • LDS

Almora isn’t a big power hitter. Just put the ball in play. When you’re always swinging for the fence, sometimes the team doesn’t get many hits and strikes out a bunch. The strategy needs to change along with a hundred other things. Otherwise, the rest of the year will simply be more of the same and the highlight of the season will be the trade deadline fire sale.
