Graham Ashcraft
After an outstanding start to his big league career where he posted a 1.14 ERA through his first four starts, Graham Ashcraft has struggled in the last two outings as he’s given up 10 runs in 9.2 innings. The ground ball pitcher has given up a home run in each of his last two starts, and 17 hits overall in that stretch.
This season he’s pitched much better against lefties, holding them to a .570 OPS and just three extra-base hits in 74 plate appearances. Righties haven’t done a lot against him this season, either, but they have performed better – posting an OPS of .712 with six extra-base hits.

Alex Cobb
The right-handed start missed three weeks from the end of May until June 19th when he returned to face the Pirates. He threw just 60 pitches in 4.0 innings in that outing. Overall he’s posted a 5.62 ERA this season, but much of that came in back-to-back starts in mid-May when he allowed 13 earned runs in 11.1 innings. Those earned runs make up half of the runs he’s allowed this season in nine total starts.
His splits are quite different. Lefties have hit against him well this season, posting a .315 average, drawing plenty of walks, and showing some power. Righties are hitting for a solid .266 average against him, but they don’t walk much and with the lower average the slugging percentage is also lower even though the power numbers are about the same.

News and Notes
Trey Amburgey traded to Seattle
The Reds traded minor league outfielder Trey Amburgey to the Seattle Mariners on Friday afternoon. No word yet on the return. He was hitting .226 in Triple-A at the time of the trade.
Jeff Hoffman to the injured list
The Reds have called up Jared Solomon from Triple-A after placing Jeff Hoffman on the Covid injured list.

I was at the Norm Charlton game. It was Sunday night baseball on ESPN, if my memory serves me correctly. Ex- Red Kal Daniels got the golden Sombero that night as well.
Does anyone know why max hasn’t been starting since being back. Solano been playing lately since being hurt so why not max. Almost they want to hold him back since we have team control of him
It’s infuriating. If Bell isn’t going to play him against a righty, he clearly has no intention to. And with Stephenson on the IL, Shrock is the single best pure hitter on the roster. It’s insane.
Solano is 7 years older and costs more money. So is Moose. They play.
Moustakas And Senzel’s OPS+ combined matches Pham. That’s a sad commentary on the Reds this year. Senzel is producing a 41. What happened to Schrock? He has a grand total of 5 ABs for the year.
Schrock not playing and Drury isn’t either.
Drury leads the Reds in RBI’s and HR, slugging and OPS. Yet….he sits, and Moustakas plays.
I love this game.
Showcasing Solano or holding Drury out to avoid injury due to deal cooking?
I think showcasing Solano. They had one deal today (Amburgey). That probably stressed out Nick Krall for the week.
Drury also hasn’t had a day off in forever. That might be it
I’m not sure moving a player for an unknown or unspecified return qualifies as a deal.
Actually, Farmer leads the team in RBI’s now. My bad.
I actually don’t have a problem with Solano playing at 3rd, because he HAS hit in his few games this year. Maybe somebody needs a Ute infielder and he actually has some trade value at the deadline. But Drury not playing and Moustakas as DH? Or Drury could play 1st and Votto could DH.
Maybe Drury needs a breather but what about Max?? At least Bell had the common sense to slot Farmer in between our “Money Men.”
If he didn’t, it would open up the possibility that Farmer would get the IBB in a crucial situation to get to the former, who are a lot more bark than bite this season.
I’ve come to the conclusion that guys like Schrock won’t play much from now until Aug 2nd. Reds need to showcase as many guys as they can and hope somebody will trade for them. I guess I can’t blame them because these guys won’t be on the team in 24 or even 25. Pham, Senzel,Moran,Almora,Naquin,Drury,Moustakas, Farmer,Reynolds, Garcia,Strickland, Warren,Cessa, Hoffman,Minor and Castillo and Mahle etc. Let’s hope they can get rid of at least 10 and start the rebuild right. Tear it down.
Well how about that Moose
Moose is 5-15 off of Cobb, so if he is going to play this would be the game.
Some quick thinking (diving) by Farmer.
And, whadda ya know, a Moose sighting.
and Senzel? what is going on here
A severe weather warning has been issued. Hades is freezing over.
I thought senzel was safe too…. must have had an angle I did not have
Giants broadcast booth…purely professional.
I’m not sure what Max Schrock has done to have such a devoted following in this group. He was a 28th round draft pick and is now 27 years old. He hit .288 last year in a little over 100 at bats but with little power and few walks. I just don’t see the attraction.
Well, he’s not Moose, and he might have a future on the team, while several others that are playing don’t.
I get that and I am OK with him starting over Moose. It just seem some are over valuing him. I thought there was something about him that I was missing. I guess saltine crackers look good to a starving man.
JB had a good point but it seems odd that the Reds are needing to “showcase” 6-8 players that they just acquired in the off season. As far as Schrock, I like a lot what I see but he still needs to prove that he is is part of the “core” since the sample size is small (similar to your point). The point of management is to build a team. How they are progressing toward that imperative is beyond me at this point. The money should be here after next year for meaningful acquisitions but you have to develop and keep some of the players…who are they at this point?
There is not much in terms of position players that I can identify. Obviously, Stephenson and India. I no longer have faith that Senzel is part of the “core”. Other than that, the jury is still out on Barrero, De La Cruz, McClain, Hendricks and McGarry. Probably no more than two from the latter group will make it.
It looks like the starting pitching could be solid but with injuries and regression who knows.
I was perplexed early in the year when the Red’s system was getting a lot of praise. I didn’t see it then and don’t see it now. I mean there is potential there I guess, but are there really more potential than any other organization? It seems the Reds system has taken a step back this year.
He would have been safe, but he had to slide wide, and missed the front edge of the plate.
It’s time to ask the question why aren’t the Reds developing Hunter Greene.
Hes got the frame
Hes got the poise and the make up
Hes got the arm
Yet, Ashcraft and Lodolo arent really much behind him.
Greene was the top high school pitcher on the planet
Why are the Reds not developing him? Ashcraft is ahead of him
Because they don’t know how? Green is up instead of in Louisville for the fan draw, nothing more. A little more time in AAA May have been beneficial.
Ashcraft a Lodolo pitched in College. Of course or at least in my opinion they will be ahead of Greene. Greene will be fine, dude could easily have 5 or 6 wins this season
Schrock = Lopez 2.0
Really you can’t play 13 position players. The thing is I don’t think Schrock is our 13th (MM), 12th (NS), or 11th (MR). I’m guessing 1 or 2 will be gone soon with the allstar break coming up soon.
Also nice hit by Votto, also nice Job getting Bally sports an FEC fine lol
Senzel turning Catchers interference into a cottage industry
Senzel def beat this one
Senzel again!!
BTW, any update on Stephenson?
not today, although I think he started baseball activities again
Now J Hoffman on the IL. Bell didn’t give a reason so must be covid related.
Correct
Ashcraft!!!!
Trying to limit bullpen innings
Graham Ashcraft can win this one.
Let’s see if Bell plays to win or not.
We are thru 7.
Bell likes Strickland to finish this one off…
It’s 4-2 Reds going into the bottom of the 9th.
with what is available and hunter’s familiarity with the park, i will give him that
He walks Longoria and the Reds let him go to second on indifference… it’s a 4-2 ballgame !
Then gets the strikeout with four pitches, and none of them were in the zone…
A long awaited win for the Reds !
I think Ashcraft gets until he puts a runner on for the Bullpen to start, and then he gets another runner until he is pulled
Through 8 not bad at all Ashcraft, not bad at all
The Reds have a pitching co-ace in the making.
Ashcraft! Nice job young man. Hopefully Lodolo will be joining you and Greene soon.
we win….20 game winning streak starts today!!!!
The Reds keep plugging away. Score 4 or more and we should be in the thick of it !
