Doug, the lineup changed. Almora starting now in place of Reynolds

    • Tom Mitsoff

That’s good news. I was hoping Almora’s injury wasn’t serious.

    • Mark Moore

That makes more sense. Moves TJ to RF as well. Not a bad defensive OF at all with this line-up.

      • SteveO

I like glove side to foul line, so my preference would be Friedl in LF and Almora in RF. I guess it all depends on if you’re a glove side to foul line or glove side to OF gap person. I think fly balls down the lines cause the most problems for OFs. To me, if it’s backhand to the foul line, OFs don’t seem as confident getting to those balls.
        Any take?

      • Mark Moore

SteveO – that certainly makes sense. They all have the wheels to cover the turf since they can all play a decent CF as well.

  2. Mark Moore

Not a completely unexpected getaway day line-up after going late yesterday. A couple surprises by inclusion and exclusion. But we’ll see where it all leads. At least they get to come home to GABP later tonight.

  3. Bet on Red

understandf that Okay was subbed in last night which explains Garcia starting. See it is an off day for Pham. This game is for Fourth place, i think

    • Bet on Red

that is supposed to be Okey…. my bad

  4. Tom Mitsoff

Matt Reynolds batting third! Woo hoo! Who would have thought that? I’m not being critical. He’s hit much better than anyone could have expected.

    • Mark Moore

I don’t see him in the line-up. I just checked.

  5. LDS

Pham taking the day off? Anything to do the continuing fantasy sports debacle? And Farmer scratched sounds a bit concerning. Hopefully, nothing too serious since he seems to be hitting as well as anyone on the team – though I’d still like to see him back in a utility role and Barrero demonstrating whether he can play or not.

    • Mark Moore

OK, I didn’t see Farmer scratched. So Reynolds at SS for today.

Hope Farmer is just extra sore. Would be nice to win this one, but at least we took the first two out there in the desert.

      • LDS

At least, it’s a serious win. Haven’t been enough of them this year. If Castillo is “on”, then the Reds should be good.

      • LDS

Series not serious. Sometimes I hate IPhones

    • Jim Walker

The lineup situation pits credibility against dysfunction 😉 If it is really just a day off for Farmer, why was he in the originally posted lineup? If it was an error to list him in the original lineup, then apparently the left hand and right hand were not on the same page.

  6. RedsGettingBetter

The hottest hitter gets the day-off just one hour before game start, it is a little weird…additionally giving to Pham a day-off too, so with no depth in the bench Bell is sidelining two of the few better hitters available at the same time… wao

    • LDS

And Lopez added back to the taxi squad

      • Jim Walker

If form follows dysfunction, we will find out shortly before tomorrow’s game that somebody on a routine day off is head to the IL.

  7. Bet on Red

I mean, does he understand he is not supposed to hit our batters?

    • Daytonnati

Well, when you no longer have to bat, it isn’t quite as consequential … for you 🙂

    • Jim Walker

It almost looks like the DBacks are more interested in stirring something up than playing the game.

I am wondering if something happened on the field between the 2 teams after the end of the game last night or the during warmups today.

  8. Bet on Red

Like the agressiveness got the lead. This guy seems to be throwing it everywhere except where he needs too

    • Bet on Red

for the record I wrote this before Fredl was plunked

  9. Mark Moore

Well this is a fine way to start the afternoon. Keep up this actions, please.

  10. JB

Nice hit India. Sadak on the call has given me a headache. Calm down dude

    • Daytonnati

He just accelerates. He reminds me of the guy who called the Hindenberg disaster.

    • Mark Moore

I had just ended a meeting when I lit up the MLB.tv feed and hadn’t switched to the WLW audio yet. He was out of his freaking mind … which appears to be pretty typical for Sadak.

  11. Bet on Red

Thats alright, we are going to get those runs back off of some hit batters.

  12. JB

Wow! That Perdomo home run didn’t go as far as I thought it was. Totally killed it.

  13. Mark Moore

OK, it’s time for me to mow the back yard. I was going to wait until this half of the inning was over, but there’s nothing positive to watch right now. WLW booth is saying he’s leaving stuff in way to fat of an area. Let’s hope he corrects that and we pile on with our own crooked numbers.

He’s not pitching like Mahle did last evening. That much is certain.

  14. LDS

Ok, so Castillo isn’t on today. Way too many pitches

  15. Roger garrett

Just watched Castillo throw a run scoring double and a bomb on back to back pitches on mlb .Like I said a few weeks ago he never has took the next step to become an ace. When you give your guy an early 2 run lead then he gives it right back he is not a number 1 guy.Time to trade him and move on

    • Jonathan

I am not disagreeing with you but I also think we should reconsider what we are saying the qualifications are for an “ACE”. the League has change and adapted….its not the 70/80’s anymore. ERA under 3, over 200 strikeouts, and close to a 1.00 WHIP would do it for me….By your metric, there would probably be less than 15 Aces in both leagues.

      • Roger garrett

Doug said he was the Reds ace and I just repeated it.Yes that term may be different now then in the past and yes there may just a few by any metric but my point is he isn’t one of theme. There guy after his team puts up 3 gets us in order.Again per Doug he is there best starter so he gets it and did it.Luis never has got it.

    • MBS

Castillo is not an ace, but that’s fine. He’s a 2 or 3 in a good rotation. When we had Bauer, Castillo, Gray and Mahle fit in perfectly behind him.

I’m just hoping Greene will be that Ace we need, so Lodolo, Ashcraft and others will fit in behind him.

      • Jonathan

Hi. I think Doug was saying he is the teams Ace. Right? Meaning teams best SP. Who are the NLs Aces then?

      • MBS

It’s a term for the best of the best. He’s our teams #1, but not an ace. All teams don’t get one. It would be like saying every team has an elite 1B. Every team has a starting 1B, but they are not all elite.

  16. Indy Red Man

I know Wins/Losses are pretty much outdated, but Castillo is 14-26 since 2019.

Reds score 2 and he gives up 3. They score 5 and he’ll give up atleast 3-4 and let the bullpen finish off the collapse. The stuff is obviously there, but the concentration isn’t. He just center cut a 2 run HR to their 9 hitter. He was throwing 98-99 the other day vs the Nats and got burned in the 1st inning.

Idk? I know I change my mind every other day on him and Mahle. Mahle will dominate on the road at times, but turn around and try to get by as a 92 mph power pitcher in Gabp which isn’t going to work. 95-96 mph Mahle shows up and you’re in trouble.

    • LDS

The current outlook that W/Ls don’t matter is pretty much delusional. Just like corporate America, it’ll take awhile, but the analytics scam will pass.

      • Indy Red Man

Well I get that W/L is much less important because everyone throws so hard that innings are limited and alot of guys down in the rotation are happy to get thru 5 without getting beat up. Still though…I’ve seen Castillo lose so many 2-1, 3-2 games and yet still blow 4-5 run leads several times a season. That shouldn’t happen with his arm talent

      • Jim Walker

My bias is that for starting pitchers there is often truth to be found in the team’s record in the games they started, regardless of the pitching decision.

Last year in 33 starts by Castillo, the team went 11-22. His decisions were 8-16; decisions by relievers behind him were in the very same 1:2 ratio, 3-6.

Think about that for a second or three. On a .500 team, the team lost 2/3 of the starts by a particular pitcher. Other starters working with the same relief corps obviously fared much better in terms of eventual team outcome.

IMO, Castillo is capable of obscuring inconsistency with brilliance.

      • LDS

Probably bring in more on trade than Mahle, if I had confidence in Krall and company making a good trade.

      • greenmtred

It might, because logic often doesn’t prevail over emotion or narrow opinion. W-L takes no account of an indisputable piece of logic: The pitcher has no control over his team’s hitting/fielding, and the outcome of the game is heavily dependent upon these factors. I see a theme emerging in your opinion on this issue and your oft-repeated contention that a manager has more power to affect the fortunes of a team than he actually could, historical evidence to the contrary be darned (being careful here, Doug). But it’s all cool, LDS; you’re perfecting classic curmudgeonliness at a faster rate than even I am managing.

    • Jim Walker

Too bad there isn’t a way for Castillo pitch without knowing if/ when his team is ahead since he seems to often have issues when pitching with a lead.

      • LDS

Yeah, I miss the old guys. I can’t see guys like Gibson, Seaver, and the rest letting up once they had a lead.

    • Roger garrett

Good point about his velocity and I am cluleless how some times he had 91/92 and then it’s 95/96 almost at times to the same hitter

  17. JB

Going to be interesting when everybody is back in and healthy. Somebody is going to get sent down or DFA’d. Reynolds is making a case to stay. Reynolds,Schrock,Solano,Moose for the final 3 spots. Bye Moose.

    • LDS

Moose is making too much, like Suarez last year, he’ll play

    • Hanawi

Agree that it will be interesting. Wonder if they could get a lottery ticket type for Reynolds or get someone to take on Moose by picking up half of what he is owed.

      • Mark Moore

Moose only moves if we get less than we should for Mahle or Castillo because he’s included.

DFA is way too expensive, though that’s what I would interpret as a “winning mindset” showing full faith in the young studs.

    • MBS

We only have 2 players who can get a pretty decent return, Castillo and Mahle. We have guys who could be sweeteners Pham, Farmer, Reynolds, Hoffman, and Cessa. All of those sweeteners could also be trade for cash kinda guys to.

If I were to guess, they’d trade Reynolds for cash when we get healthy. Moustakas, Solano, and Schrock will be part of the 26.

  18. Mark Moore

Back yard mowed. It appears LC has settled in a little bit. Not a terrible pitch count heading into the 5th and no more hits or runs.

Of course, we haven’t hit or scored either, so … 😮

  19. Mark Moore

Gonna take some tricky work to get out of this mess.

    • Mark Moore

Kind of like that. Less than perfect throw by the Moose/Manatee but it ended up working. Glad to see he made a clean pick on that one. Stuff comes at you fast when you’re pulled in a little bit.

  20. JB

Hopefully Hoffman or somebody is up and ready.

    • JohnnyTV

Putting in Hoffman with the bases loaded is a prescription for disaster.
Let him start off innings relaxed.

  21. Mark Moore

Dodged a hail of bullets. It’s a bit of a crap shoot as to LC’s ability to handle the 6th, but you have to figure with the BP working last night, he’ll get sent out there at least to start.

Need to back him up with some action here.

    • JohnnyTV

He got through the top of the order, likely as Bell was hoping.
Play the odds and let him pitch the 6th.

    • Bet on Red

The Irony that we had a SP that went 9 innings last night and still had bullpen usage

      • JohnnyTV

Four HBP? Sometimes I miss Amir Garrett.
No way he’d put up with that.

      • Bet on Red

oh we would have cleared benches by now

      • JB

Amir Garrett was a head case who couldn’t get the ball over the plate last year and when he did it was in the stands. Don’t miss him one bit. He should of focused more on pitching that fighting.

  22. Roger garrett

Two hits in 5 innings and 2 gift runs.Bags are packed and on the plane so can we just forfeit and take off.Same effort I have seen for years.Chance to sweep and not interested just happy with a series win.No Pham no Farmer today and off tomorrow.Old guys tired like me.Scripted lineup for sure

  23. Roger garrett

Get on the plane.Four guys hit and no response

    • LDS

It’s not Garrett the Reds need back, it’s Puig

  24. Mark Moore

Pretty nifty field and flip to LC to close out the 6th. I will give Moose full props for that. But please don’t put a 3B glove on his hoof/flipper/hand anymore … k?

  25. Old-school

Not to pick at scabs or jump into rabbit holes…..but the Pirates have lost 9 in a row. The Cubs have lost 8 in a row. The Brewers have lost 9/10.

Had Castellini just sucked it up and Said the budget is $145 million and told Krall get a big bat a big lefty bullpen arm and another righty arm and whatever else you need within that framework but also keep developing for 2024 and no crazy contracts over 30….. division was winnable.

    • Mark Moore

You had to pick that scab, didn’t you?

      • Old-school

I couldn’t help it. Sorry. Reds went 3-22 and they are still better than the Pirates and Cubs.

    • JB

With the pitching staff they have right now they could be winning the division. They could be having 30,000 fans in the stands every night but because they are cheap, they have 9000 and last place.

    • scotly50

Would not have been enough. The Cardinals are going to repeat as division champions.

  26. Mark Moore

Looks like LC is dealing pretty well this inning. I was figuring it was a game of “press your luck” (and not the one with Elizabeth Banks hosting). Just have to get through Varsho here and he can say he’s done all he can (aside from the cookies that led to runs).

    • JohnnyTV

Yeah, ‘trade him and move on….’ SMH.

  27. JB

Let’s get a run here. Pinch hit for Garcia with Farmer or Pham.

  28. Indy Red Man

Gutty performance by Luis and it feels like he’s bringing his 98-100 mph stuff to more starts this year.

6 outs left and you’re letting Garcia hit? He did crack one earlier that got ran down

    • Old-school

Who they gonna hit ? Big Dog Pham?

He ‘s in Vegas right now for his off day

What is up with Brandon Drury?

    • Mark Moore

Alternative is Okey at this point. Really don’t want to burn just a PH’er and then have to burn Okey anyway.

  29. Mark Moore

Brandon Drury! Atta boy … distance doesn’t matter once it clears the fence.

  30. LDS

Moose or Drury at third – really ceasing to be much of a debate

    • JB

Drury’s job period. Hopefully Bell doesn’t screw that up.

      • LDS

Dump Moose for some prospects. Extend Drury. Easy for us outsiders. Drury had a bad couple of years so who knows if he is real.

      • MBS

Hopefully Krall doesn’t screw it up, extend Drury for 2 or 3 years before he becomes our teams lone Allstar representative.

    • Mark Moore

I know I semi-offended somebody on the wrap-up thread by continuing the “manatee with a mitt on his flipper” thing, but at 3B that’s what he is anymore. He’s just not up to the task in multiple ways. Drury is and has proved it. End of story.

      • LDS

Yep, Drury could provide a bridge until one of the young guys is ready. I had high hopes for Moose but showing up overweight and out of shape is inexcusable.

      • greenmtred

I don’t think anybody was offended. As for the manatees, they probably enjoy being evoked in healthy banter.

  31. Mark Moore

Singles won’t kill us. Warren got a clean start and, if I recall, is normally pretty good in that situation.

Trying to remember that both BP’s saw action last night.

Really need a GIDP right here, right now.

  32. MK

Don’t get the love affair Bell has with Warren. He must have naked pictures of someone’s wife.

  33. Bet on Red

Warren is regressing from last year. I do not know if he is hurt or if it is BJ doing BJ things but

    • Reddawg2012

I don’t understand why people are blaming David Bell. There’s only one better option down there (Diaz) and he can’t cover every inning out of the bullpen.

      • JB

Everybody is better than Warren right now. If anything bring in Sanmartin to face all the lefties in a row.

      • greenmtred

Exactly: Any of the guys there can have a good inning and any of them, including Diaz, can walk guys and get us in trouble. Warren has been okay in his recent appearances–mostly–so the play-the-hot-hand folks should applaud this move.

  34. JB

I guess Bell is going to leave Warren in and white flag it.

  35. Eddie

Why wasn’t Garcia ready for the throw as a catcher who played in high school you have to always be ready for throw at home from anytime

  36. Votto4life

Why does Bell continue to put Warren n high leverage situations? It makes no sense.

    • LDS

Yes it does. But the humor is how all the optimism and pro-Bell sentiments from last night’s recap is evaporating. We’ve watched the same thing every year Bell has been here

    • Stoney

No it doesn’t but it will continue. Bell has been doing this for 4 years.

  37. Mark Moore

That’s not how we want this to play out.

I’m thinking we’re in trouble now.

  38. Bet on Red

India bobbled that, I suppose at this point I am fine with taking the series.

    • Eddie

I guess but the fight and what we had going last few games we should won this one. Garcia sucks

  39. Daytonnati

2 out of 3 seems good enough for the organization.

  40. Old-school

I gave up on Aquino but if hes in RF the guy is out by 5 feet.
Friedl doesnt have a good arm and a 26th man at best.

Reds need pitching, they need OF and they need a replacement at first base. WE can debate catching too but trading Castillo can fill 2 of those needs.

    • Eddie

Friedl had the throw at home plate but Garcia wasn’t ready for the throw you can tell his stance he was relaxed and was not expecting it so I put that on Garcia

      • Jim Walker

Just another situation similar to Farmer play at the plate last night. Since the rules changed, catchers won’t go into a runner even if they have the ball (which the rules as I understand them make it OK to do).

In the days of my playing, guys like Bench or Yeager would have been set up on the plate just behind it to the ball side and not in front of it. They would have wanted the ball coming right over the plate so they could catch it as they moved across the plate into runner to make the tag.

  41. Votto4life

Bringing SanMartin in should just about do it.

  42. Old-school

This is sorting. It’s not game 2 of the World Series.
Warren has not been very good but he needs to pitch in a tie game in the 8th inning between 2 last place MLB teams when your bullpen is limited to figure out if he has a roster spot and can be counted on in 2023. It’s not looking that way but there’s only one way to find out.

  43. Bet on Red

its a one run game at GABP with Senzels at bat

  44. Jeff Morris

Reds WILL never be any good at all, until they address their bullpen. You can have good starting pitching, and pitchers that pitch well like Mahle and Castillo have the last two days, and if you don’t have a decent bullpen, you are going to blow leads! This is the same thing that happened last year with the Reds. I was talking to a friend at work, and we both agreed if we were building a new team, we would concentrate on building a reliable bullpen. Not perfect, but at least decent and reliable. Look at the 1990 World Series Reds, they had Charlton, Dibble, and Myers. You have to be consistent with your pitching, you cannot have a decent starting pitching and a crappy bullpen. Until the Reds owner and management understand this, and start spending money to upgrade their bullpen, they will always be a bad team! I just don’t think the Reds owner grasps this, so the Reds will be what they are….a bad team.

  45. Jeff Morris

Alot of these players on the Reds, especially the bullpen do not belong on a MLB team, they belong at AA or AAA level to pitch for their career until they get too old to play or get another job somewhere else. Reds ownership never understands this and is satisfied with a mediocre team, they only want to save money and make money. They want to make profit, they could care less about winning!

  46. SteveO

Detwiler hasn’t pitched in about a week. We’ve had many different situations for him to pitch. I’m wondering what type of situation does Bell believe he should be used in? Right now, 8th and 9th inning appearances have to go to the quartet of Detwiler, Hoffman, Kuhnel and Diaz. With a day off tomorrow, only Cessa and Diaz should have been kept out of the game tonight. Drury HR took the L away from Castillo and with Detwiler, Hoffman and Kuhnel available, they should’ve been pitching those last 2 innings.

  47. Gpod

Warren should be sent down….he does not belong in the majors
