The Cincinnati Reds have placed infielder Mike Moustakas on the injured list. Taking his place on the roster will be outfielder TJ Friedl.
Mike Moustakas was not given an injury designation, which means he’s on the COVID injury list. That does not mean that he has COVID. It could mean that he simply is showing symptoms that could be COVID. There is no time frame required for him to return as long as he is no longer showing symptoms and tests negative.
After a slow start to the season, Mike Moustakas caught fire for a three week stretch from April 28th through May 17th. IN 17 games he hit .328/.443/.569 with nine walks, 10 strikeouts, and he was hit by three pitches. Since then, though, he’s been in an absolutely brutal stretch where he’s gone 3-41 (.073) with no extra-base hits. He has continued to walk nearly as often as he’s struck out (eight walks, 10 strikeouts), but the hits simply haven’t come.
Cincinnati will replace his bat with another left-handed hitting option in TJ Friedl. He is an outfielder, so he won’t be stepping directly into any lineup for Moustakas. This will be the third time that Friedl has been recalled this season. In his 20 games with the Reds he’s struggled at the plate, hitting .179/.237/.254 with three doubles and a triple. He has found success on the bases, stealing four bags in as many attempts. Friedl is coming off of back-to-back 2-hit games for Louisville against Gwinnett over the last two days in Triple-A.
Interesting
Who has missed more time since 2020 began- Moose or Senzel? What a waste of money and a waste of a top draft pick those two players have been. It’s been one ailment after another.
Hindsight is 20-20.
Plenty of people argued against the Moose signing at the time (mainly just the 4th year), but absolutely no one was complaining about the Senzel draft pick.
You win some, you lose some. Senzel is not a lost cause yet, but I agree we’re all waiting for him to show something. Ultimately, I agree with PTBNL.
Senzel is in year four. His rookie year was 2019. I don’t understand the negative comments with this guy. He hustles, he has speed and he goes all out. Would you rather have a guy who jogs after the ball? His injuries too have been legit, he hurt a knee, and has had a shoulder issue, if I am not mistaken by hustling and diving for balls.
Curious. Maybe they’re sending Moose to a conditioning program. As for Friedl, don’t think he’s actually shown much thus far. They could have tried Dawson, who hasn’t yet proven that he can’t hit in the major leagues. And Dawson is listed on the 40 already so not a big deal. Who knows, maybe this time Friedl gets it going.
No one has mentioned yet that Senzel jammed his fingers in the dive back to the bag on that last play. He looked in pain
I saw that and commented yesterday. We’ll have to hope for the best. Looked like he jammed it just a bit.
Oops, must’ve missed your comment đŸ™‚
He’s in the lineup tonight, which is a good sign. But he’s the DH.
Good he’s getting his AB’s. Hoping the night off from fielding is to ensure any finger jam isn’t more than most of us have experienced over the course of time.
Then again, I once shot a 16-ga finish nail into my finger, so what do I know … đŸ™‚
ouch!
Almora has been outplaying him anyway so not a big kiss.
Interesting. Seems the flexibility of the COVID IL can server a lot of purposes. I’m also hoping this provides an opportunity for Mr. Moose to condition a bit more. I’m still hoping we don’t see him with a glove on his hand anymore at any position.
As for TJ … meh. I think he was the convenient option to choose.
I thought the Moustakas signing was bad but I have a feeling this is going to be Hosmer bad…..Thankfully there is only 1 more year to be straddled with this contract….. Someone should of told Bob to go to an alley hand him 30 million dollars let that guy kick him in the nuts……..It would of saved him 30 million and half the roster.
but not his nuts
It’s hardly Hosmer (8 years, $144MM) bad. It’s no even half bad, lol.
*not
Well there you go. Things just keep getting worse. Now who is going to popup to the infield? Nobody does it quite like Moose. This is really going to screw Bell up and his pre-planned lineups and scheduled days off.
+500
He is the pop-up king at the moment, isn’t he?
Raining in Northwest OH
Yeah. Not looking good for an on-time start. T-storms, wind, and small hail. All looks to be blowing through about now through game time. Then maybe a break followed by more chance of storms.
i thought friedl was already up here. lol. hard to keep track of all these injuries and transactions
He’s got a permanent seat on the shuttle at this point … with open travel either way depending on which way the wind blows.
So he’s injured? That lumpy toad injured my eyes and sensibilities. Don’t hurry back
The good ole “covid” list. Seems to come for players in the midst of a bad slump; Votto and Senzel stayed on it for 2 weeks, didn’t hear any info about symptoms, test results, etc. Time for Moose to take his turn, if I recall they were not too happy when he only stayed on the list a few days last time.
Votto has talked publicly about his symptoms and difficult recovery.
Missed that. I rely on reporters, team statements or David Bell. I don’t follow any player’s social media threads.
Yeah – Votto told the reporters that he didn’t leave his bed or the couch for 8 or 9 days.
I wish people would stop thinking everything is some wild conspiracy. There’s a highly contagious virus going around the world and has been for over two years now.
Couldn’t agree more Doug.
Idk Doug? I think his point stands. Didn’t Senzel make the trip to Canada or was he IL’d for covid then? Seems like he’s been on the covid list 4-5 times atleast in the last few years and if he went to Canada then he’s vaxxed. I think there is a minor conspiracy in there somewhere))
If he was on the IL for Toronto then why not vaxxed after the 2nd time you got it? Its either a conspiracy or someone’s iq is up for debate.
I couldn’t care less either way, but got vaxxed to get a job long enough to collect the $1500 signing bonus & overtime. I mean do these people know how many unknown vaxs we got in the military? I had 6 at once by 3 dime sized shots in each shoulder. I think Mahle would’ve survived somehow and kept the $100k to sit in the dugout and watch 3 games.
I’d deal Mahle away on principle.
No Senzel missed the Jays series. Already on Covid list I think? I swear if that kid ever plays a month straight I’ll do a Tik Tok of Village People’s YMCA
Reds pitching is last in the NL in HR allowed, walks, and hit batters. I can’t wait until 6:40 for Sadak and Larkin to tell me, so can someone give me a refresher on why Derek Johnson is a genius?
Because he is Sultan, just like all the kids in Lake Woebegone are above average đŸ˜‰
Moustakas and Votto 41,000.000.00 !!
How Many of the 50 games have they contributed big hits to win the game? Maybe 4 or 5 that I remember. Sure Votto is Starting to contribute, but too little too late. The train has already left the station for the Reds. Fortunately the new crop of pitches and the money to be freed up after these two are gone might help put together a winning team again.
Isn’t this Friedl’s last opportunity to be recalled due to new contract. I believe this is 5 ups and if he goes down again he can’t come back .
The 5-up-and-downs only started as of May 2nd. So Friedl, for the rules at play, has only been optioned twice this season.
