Connor Overton

The right-handed pitcher made his big league debut in 2021 with the Blue Jays last August, pitching in relief. He would pitch in four games for the Blue Jays, all out of the bullpen and now allow a run in 6.2 innings. Despite that he was still placed on waivers in early September and claimed by the Pirates. He made three starts and two relief appearances with Pittsburgh and things didn’t quite go as well as they did in Toronto as he allowed eight runs in 8.2 innings while striking out 11.

This year in Triple-A, Overton has been quite good, posting a 2.84 ERA in 19.0 innings while walking just two batters and striking out 22. In his last outing with Louisville he struck out 9 batters over 7.0 innings while giving up just one run. In his Reds debut this past weekend he allowed a run over 5.1 innings against the Rockies.

Splits

It doesn’t seem too useful to have his splits since he faced less than 100 batters in Triple-A this year and only has one game in the big leagues this season.

JT Brubaker

Lefties have had plenty of success against JT Brubaker this season, particularly compared to righties. Against both, he’s struggled to throw strikes, but he’s limited the power output of right-handed batters while lefties have put up six extra-base hits against him and slugged .500.

News and Notes

Jared Solomon recalled for the doubleheader

When teams play a doubleheader they are allowed to expand the roster by one player. Today that player will be Jared Solomon. The reliever hasn’t allowed a run in 10.2 innings while allowing 3 hits and 3 walks this season between Double-A Chattanooga and Triple-A Louisville. He’s also struck out 11 batters.

Nick Lodolo not yet ready to return

After being expected to start today for the Reds, Nick Lodolo’s back soreness returned after throwing yesterday and he will remain on the injured list.

I would be surprised if Solano plays a game in a Reds uniform.

      I’m getting the same feeling.

Kinda like the Sean Marshall signing a few years ago. Although, I guess Marshall made a few appearances.

Anyone remember Donnie Ecker? The guy credited with salvaging Aristides Aquino’s fortunes in 2019. Looks to be a young man on the ascent. Lets’ keep an eye on him, perhaps he might be a great pick to replace David Bell at some point….

Well we sure need to improve our hitting to say the least. That’s for sure.

Overton pitching like he should stay in the rotation

He doesn’t have great stuff by any means but he has several pitches. Throws strikes and knows how to pitch.

Sounds like Larkin is carrying on a job interview.

He and Sadak are overly repulsive today. If poor play doesn’t get people to stop watching Sadak might.

I’d hire Larkin to be the new manager. I agree with most of what he says. He also won’t need a translator when he talks to his Spanish speaking players.

Doesn’t matter who the manager is

      • Redsfan4life

Larkin would be even worse than what they have now. Unless you enjoy watching players failing at Sac. Bunts. He would call for it nearly every time a runner reached first with less than two outs.

I’m not concerned about this season, but we are about to enter a new generation of this team. Next year will probably be the last of the Votto era. 2024 could easily have Farmer as the most expensive player on the roster, as I doubt they extend Castillo or Mahle.

Bell’s not to blame for this run, but I think a new manager would be good for a new era.

I know people on here don’t like freidl but I would like to see him play every game and see what he has got.

Just tuning in. Can someone tell me why Overton got pulled at only 77 pitches? Looks like he was having a decent outing.
Someone needs to remind David Bell it’s a doubleheader day.

He was starting to get hit. He started the 3rd time through the order and it wasn’t going well. Right call IMO.

Score two runs in first inning and haven’t done much since. This team just isn’t very good right now.

Sims sucks. Feels like the other guys walked him off like 4 times last year. I knew he was never going to be high leverage

I see the Pirates relievers are like the Reds Relievers. Walk the first batter you face. Mandatory.

Question, can the Reds activate Votto, and or Senzel for second game of a double header? Do they need to be activated before the start of DH?

    Reply
    • Bet on Red

No they can be activated in between games yes, with of course corresponding roster moves

No better guy to have at the plate with runners on than Ty Steve.

The Pirates are like a mirror image of the Reds. I wonder if both teams have noticed.

With all the struggles this season, I am glad to see this offensive burst. Yes it is the pirates, however who knows if this is type of game needed to run off some wins. Finally something to smile about!!

Watching a non-catcher catch makes you realize how much of an art and skill required to do it. It took away the in the dirt pitches from their pitchers. No framing either, because they had Stephenson struck out if JVM had framed it.

I’ve been doing a project, but my wife had the game on and was giving me some updates. I’ll admit, I wasn’t optimistic with the first couple. But then ALL THAT happened. Fun to watch TySteve go oppo again and tie up Gamel. Hard to believe we’re staring down a 9-2 win here.
