Connor Overton

The right-handed pitcher made his big league debut in 2021 with the Blue Jays last August, pitching in relief. He would pitch in four games for the Blue Jays, all out of the bullpen and now allow a run in 6.2 innings. Despite that he was still placed on waivers in early September and claimed by the Pirates. He made three starts and two relief appearances with Pittsburgh and things didn’t quite go as well as they did in Toronto as he allowed eight runs in 8.2 innings while striking out 11.

This year in Triple-A, Overton has been quite good, posting a 2.84 ERA in 19.0 innings while walking just two batters and striking out 22. In his last outing with Louisville he struck out 9 batters over 7.0 innings while giving up just one run.

Chad Kuhl

In his first season with the Rockies, Chad Kuhl is out to a fantastic start. He’s holding hitters to an average under .150 from both the left and right side, and his ERA is a minuscule 1.10. His peripherals don’t quite support that ERA – though it’s tough to imagine anyone’s peripherals supporting an ERA that low over the long haul. Kuhl has a walk rate that’s not great this season, and he’s striking out fewer batters than a league average pitcher, too. But he’s limited any and all power this season – giving up just one double with no homers or triples on the season.

News and Notes

Aristides Aquino is designated for assignment

Clearing a spot on the 40-man roster for tonight’s starter Connor Overton, the Reds designated outfielder Aristides Aquino for assignment. Outside of his incredible August back in 2019, Aquino hit just .173/.261/.356 with Cincinnati.

How many pitchers are on the roster now? What is David Bell going to do when the rosters go down to 26?

  2. Magnum 44

I haven’t paid attention to the Reds in 2 days due to the draft didn’t miss a beat Phil going tio watch the Ozarks tonight that is what I’m going do Phil. I just can’t stomach it anymore I will read the recap redsminorleagues.com but I can’t do it no more….Probably will still complain on here, but they think we are morons I just can’t contribute anymore to a franchise that treats their fan base like this

  3. Steve

Bell doesn’t know what he is doing with the pitching staff now, so it will just be more of the same. Changing pitchers every inning foolish and he always does. Of course if a pitcher is getting knocked all over the place, he is happy to leave him in until the game is out of reach. The Reds have lost more games because of Bell’s hopeless use of the bullpen than because of any player! He really should go!!

    • Mark A Verticchio

I agree Bell’s use of the bull pen has been ridiculous. The worse part is he has failed to ever develop any sort of plan or roles for his pitchers he just flies by the seat of his pants and it has failed miserably.

  4. Mark Moore

India okay? I mean, he had a decent game yesterday. Just eating him back into things?

    • SOQ

Officially a “Recovery” day. Had a hitch in his step crossing homeplate last night

    • LarkinPhillips

He will probably be off again tomorrow. Hopefully he is back in lineup Tuesday.

  5. Indy Red Man

Sadak is pumped up that the Reds have a lead..lollllllll. Every rare lead feels like when Akron goes up 3-0 on Ohio State 5 min into the game.

  6. Indy Red Man

Albert Almora is hitting .350 at Lville. He’s a massive improvement in RF over Fraley or AA. He’d be easily the best defensive OFer they have as well.

    • MBS

Almora could be a good platoon with Naquin in RF, if not him maybe Cedrola will get a shot.

    • Old-school

      Almora has GG defense

      Surprised hes not up

  7. Mark A Verticchio

Lead off Home Run and then 12 straight go down. Overton has to pitch a shut out. LOL

  8. Old-school

Joey votto in the month of April has been poor and very much part of this losing problem

  9. Bet on Red

THE END IS NIGH, Moose has a three-game hitting streak, cats are sleeping with dogs…. worlds peace…. lol

  10. Mark Moore

GIDP … but at least we had the bases juiced so we got a run in and left a man on 3rd for Fraley.

  11. Bet on Red

Thats making ESPN right there 4 to 1

  12. JB

I’ll take Overton right now over Sanmartin or Vlade. Just 55 pitches with one out in the 5th.

    • Bet on Red

just thought that… think it into exsistance

      • JB

Shouldn’t take much to out think the idiots in the front office.

  13. Old-school

Jake fraley has been been part of the problem- not part of a Reds solution

Get better Jake from State Farm Seattle

You got big shoes to fill Jake from State Farm and you aint filling them

  14. Indy Red Man

I remember when John Lamb went 7 ip/1 run in Coors so I wouldn’t do any cartwheels over Overton just yet, but atleast he’s not nibbling and thats a start

    • Indy Red Man

6/1/2016. Lamb had a career 2-13 record, but that was one of his two wins..lolllll

  15. Joe P.

Overton’s delivery reminds me of Sam LeCure. He has a similar build and delivery out of the stretch.

  16. Maloney63

Overton, probably since he came from other organizations, appears to have a much better idea how to pitch than ANY of the Reds other starters this year.

    • JB

He is in the sixth inning. Has Any other starter for the Reds reached the sixth this year?

  17. VaRedsFan

Moose should only play the field in emergency situations. That was terrible. He’s had several plays like that, that aren’t called errors, that 95 percent of the league makes

    • Maloney63

He should be a DH period! He should never be in the field unless it’s an emergency like you said. We have PLENTY of 3Bmen on this team, all better fielders than him!

    • Indy Red Man

Its a solid combination of guys near the end and AAAA players. Low baseball IQ as well. Million guys on last few nights and they keep rolling over on outside pitches for double plays. Even India did it and he’s pretty talented. If they went the other way then it might sneak thru into RF or atleast move everyone up a base.

  18. Mark Moore

Anybody else feel like DB may have just lit a cigarette in the gasoline shack? Hope not, but with Art Warren you never know.

  19. Old-school

Suarez at .230 with OPS comfortably under .800 and K% getting back to his 30% comfort zone

Still slow and still bad defensively and guaranteed till 2025

  20. VaRedsFan

    Overton done. 75 pitches…cruising.
    Bell says nope.
This game has Hunter Strickland’s name all over it.

    • Maloney63

What is the chance the Red bullpen will hold this game for Overton. I would say somewhere between 0 and 10%!!

  21. RedsFanInFL

So I’m at a social gathering at a local pub in a Cincinnati suburb. There are 3 TV’s in our bar area. One has NFL draft coverage, 2nd has ESPN – UFC, 3rd has ESPN 2 – college baseball (Ole Miss vs Arkansas). They are actually showing a baseball game but it’s NOT the Reds and no one has asked the bartenders to change the channel to the Reds.

Apathy is worse than hate. At least when you hate something, you still have an emotional attachment to it.

  22. Mark A Verticchio

I can’t believe Bell is pulling him, over managing as usual. Should be 2 out, no thanks to Moose.

    • Indy Red Man

Reds are gonna Red. Warren has better stuff then Overton and he probably didn’t want the Rocks to see him for the 3rd time. Guys just don’t make plays or pitches they need to make.

Counting on Santillan and Warren and SanMartin when they have zero track record is crazy. On the back end of your staff would be something else

  23. Mark Moore

    And then that happens …

Lit cigs in the gas room. We’re tied with a man on 2nd and only 1 out. Warren tried to out-think him and failed miserably. And looking to walk Randy G.

  24. Old-school

Jake from state farm isnt getting it done. That was a terrible throw missing multiple cut off men leading to a run

  25. Mark A Verticchio

Who didn’t see this coming? Plain and simple Bell has to go.

    • JB

When a pitcher is getting rocked , Bell leaves him in because he has nobody up. When a pitcher is in control and doing well , Bell pulls him.

      • Indy Red Man

Well you have to leave them in for 3 batters. That means everyone on base is scoring and atleast one that the new pitcher faced

  26. Joe P.

Glad Art Warren spends so much time talking to himself. How about he just throw the ball to the catcher instead of it making it so darn difficult?

  27. Bet on Red

Yea, there was no reason to pull him. This one is truly on bell, I know warren is better than this but… these guys need to perform better

  28. Indy Red Man

Took Rockies +1.5 when it was 1-0. Took Colorado before the game to win the race to 4 runs. Bell will find a way to get me paid more often then not

    • LarkinPhillips

I have been betting against Reds consistently and winning as well. That’s the only consolation in this horrible season.

      • Indy Red Man

Just won $2200 on my Pacers after they picked up Haliburton. They were trying to tank unlike the Reds players.

    • Maloney63

Not a bad idea to make money off Bell’s ineptitude. Why is Moose playing 3rd? Why is Fraley in the lineup? Why is Joey still batting cleanup? Why take Overton out so early? Why use Warren so early when he usually pitches late in games? Why not go to Sims if he was going to be used anyway? Bell can’t make a decision that works to save his life! Sad.

  29. Mark Moore

Travel day tomorrow. I’ve seen enough. I’ll head for bed with a sliver of hope and wake up to check the results and come back to reality.

    Night all!

  30. Joe P.

2 of those 4 runs came via the walk. Typical Reds.

  31. Indy Red Man

100 losses is a lock now. Might lose 110 like Baltimore recently

      • Joe P.

        Colorado Red

You are correct. 15% win percentage = a record of 24-138

  32. Votto4life

Aye aye aye…looks like we are witnessing history tonight. Bell will be fired on Monday.

    • Mark Moore

I wouldn’t bet on that. The FO is still in love with the guy.

      • Votto4life

Yeah I know they love him, they make make him special assistant to his father so something but I am guessing he will be fired on Monday. The first step they should do is fire Nick Krall, but I bet they start with Bell.

If heads don’t roll before the Reds next home stand, their attendance will be approaching the Oakland A’s numbers.

    • LuciusRuber

Big Bob is a fan of Buddy-I wouldn’t count on it

      • Votto4life

Then they will deserve to play in an empty stadium.

I get Big Bob likes the David and Buddy Bell, but I doubt he likes them enough to put his business in jeopardy.

I hope he has learned a lesson from all of this, never hire someone you can’t fire.

  33. Old-school

Low inside slider to a lefty?

You dont throw lefties that pitch past 12 years old

    4 run inning

    • VaRedsFan

      Preaching to the choir.
#1 pet peave of mine. Reds do it all the time.

  34. Mark A Verticchio

My Lord, when is enough enough with Bell? It actually looks like Bell is trying to lose. Pulling a guy with 75 pitches throwing a 2 hitter is beyond stupid.

  35. VaRedsFan

To the people that say it’s not really Bell’s fault because the roster is so bad. They must not watch the real games and just look at box scores.

Bell has no feel for the game.

How could he not see that Overton was perfectly in control. No Rockie had reached 2nd base the WHOLE night. And he pulls the guy at 75 pitches….just because he feels the need to get involved.

    • Indy Red Man

I get his reasoning, but you’re right. Just no feel for what everyone else is watching

    • Bet on Red

I am not a lover of bell i will make that clear, however, he was given a trash roster this season. However, tonight’s loss is directly on his shoulders

    • Jim

The roster is bad. But you throw in Bell, and you have a disaster.

  36. Joe P.

Bell was grinning from ear-to-ear when he took Overton out of the game. Overton was pitching a great game. Bell refused to let that kind of success continue.

  37. Pat Conrad

At least Aquino could hit the cutoff man. Fraley is pathetic. David Bell is hopeless.

  38. Indy Red Man

Joey is done. I don’t think he’s rebounding this time after a lousy April. He’s seen Kuhl twice already and takes strike 3 right down the middle?

Joey might hit like .240 with 16 HRs or something. Which when you combine that with his running and fielding makes him one of the worst 1B in the game. I would bet he doesn’t crack .720 ops. Everyone gets old

    • Old-school

Votto and Moose are both done

$84 million still to be paid out to those old slow ancient dudes entering baseball assisted living on 22/23 awful Reds teams

  39. LDS

The number one obstacle to a competitive team isn’t the roster. It’s Bell and his coaches. Lots of guys on the roster are embarrassing themselves.

  40. Old-school

Joey votto hitting .130 takes strike 3 right down broadway

What a mental mess he is at $25 million.

    • Maloney63

And Bell will never remove him from the cleanup spot. Joey is now 179th out of the 179 players who have enough ABs to qualify for slugging pct. As pathetic as it gets!

    • LDS

It’s the Reds system. Votto knew how to hit. All the so-called “analytics” are ruining players’ careers. Forget the HRs, the launch angle, etc. Just hit the ball. Take the HR when it comes. Some guys will never be sluggers regardless of their launch angle.

      • Jim

Bell needs to take him completely out of the batting order. Its hard to do when you have a 30 man bullpen. You have to send out an APB to find anybody on the bench.

      • Votto4life

It’s definitely ruining the game. Baseball in the 1980s was so darn fun to watch. Stolen bases, hit and run, sacrifice bunts. Now it is either a home run, a strike out or a ground out into a shift manned by defenders.

It is certainly not the game I fell in love with as a kid. No wonder young people don’t watch it. Every year there is another stupid acronym to learn.

Analytics may be smarter baseball, but it sure isn’t entertaining baseball.

  41. Mark A Verticchio

After this disaster I refuse to comprehend how any true Red’s fan can support Bell as manager. What he did to Overton tonight was sad and almost mean. I think if he hadn’t lost control of this team he has now. I wish one player or announcer for that matter would speak up about that move tonight. I hold out hope that Sam might say something in the post game.

    • Indy Red Man

Who would take the Reds job as a manager? We need someone with some fire. If they hit into 8 doubleplays in like 4 days by rolling over on outside pitches then Larkin would lose his cool. He always went the other way.

      • Mark A Verticchio

There is always someone out there who would love to mange in the major leagues, even if it is the Reds.

      • JB

Absolutely. Any coach who hasn’t managed would take the job in a heartbeat.

    • LDS

Maybe Indy is the only one trying to cover the spread. Either Bell is just that bad, has ulterior motives, or who knows. But, no he isn’t the guy to turn the Reds around regardless of the roster.

  42. Indy Red Man

Jake Fraley K Daily at your service!

    • Joe P.

He sure likes swinging at the ball that’s down at his feet!

  43. Old-school

This entire team is either a mental mess or quit mentally and collecting a pay check

Reds arent firing david bell but this team isnt showing up to play baseball games

  44. SOQ

Bob C dismantled a team that was on the verge of competing. I don’t fault the guys on the field. They’re just overmatched.

  45. Hanawi

In previous Aprils when Votto was struggling, he was still hitting the ball. The amount of Ks is piling up and his GB% is really high. Basically no line drives at all. Not really sure we can expect him to come back from this one.

    • Gpod

I have never ever seen Votto look this bad….he is not even committed to the swings he does take

  46. LDS

11.5 out of first and have tied the 2018’s 3-18 record. And still the FO does nothing.

  47. Ryah

Does I’ll retire when I can no longer compete Votto have a buyout next year?

  48. Mark A Verticchio

3 and 18, I really believe there is a good chance they will come home next Friday 3 and 22. If that happens and Bell is still the manager It will show that winning means nothing to this organization. How many managers could survive this start? I doubt very many unless they had won a lot in the past and that is not David, look how smart I am, Bell.

  49. Doc

Votto is inching his way to Aquino numbers.

In reading The Baseball 100, it is surprising how many of the game’s best had their skills just fall away so suddenly. Only difference is that most of them played before guaranteed contracts and knew it was time to step away.

    • Mark A Verticchio

I agree, if things don’t turn around for Votto he needs to step away from the last year of his contract. For those that say he always turns it around, if you watch this April seems different, less contact, more strike outs, he simply looks old.

      • William

OWNERS: HAVE YOU MADE ENOUGH MONEY IN APRIL? PLEASE CONSIDER THE FANS NOW.

  50. William

VOTTO WILL HIT. I HAVE BEEN ENJOYING THE DODGERS AND ANGELS (TROUT). TROUT IS ONE OF THE GREATEST HITTERS THIS GAME HAS SEEN. HEY, BASEBALL IS STILL GOOD.

  51. Eddie

Overton was cruising and 75 pitches his first game don’t think was right time to be pulled had 1 on base with 1 out with lead. He seem wiser choice to stay in the game. Bell management sucks why he smile bc he knew he was going to hand the rockies a series win tonight smh. Poor franchise sadly to say n witness. We have talent players but poor leaders from owner and minority to staff.

  52. Gpod

The Reds just matched the worst start in franchise history & they are just going to let the manager (who has never done a dang thing as a major league manager) keep his job…..I give up

  53. William

The Reds will have to fire someone to even begin to be taken seriously. No one has a 3 and 18 record and keeps their leadership. I would keep Bell, and fire the General Manager. I think they might fire both. They gave Bell a lemon and said drive it.

    • Gpod

No…the Reds fans were given a lemon (Bell) & asked to support it

    • Votto4life

William I am glad we agree. Most people don’t think it’s going to happen but I truly believe someone will be fired on Monday.

I would fire Nick Krall and let his replacement make the call on David Bell. But someone is going to get the axe.

  54. TR

From competitive team to season over in April. Total house cleaning needed.

  55. William

I believe Votto will make a come back and have a good year. However, if I am wrong, I think you are seeing his last year. He will retire.

  56. Gpod

I wonder what Marty B would be saying about this team right now if he was still calling games
