Nick Lodolo

The splits below are from the 2021 season in the minors for Lodolo. In his first two games in the big leagues he’s only had the chance to face a lefty six times. They are 0-5 with a walk and a strikeout against him. Righties, though, have had tons of success as they’ve hit .371/.463/.657 against him in 41 trips to the plate.

From his first start to his second start he really altered his pitch usage, throwing less fastball and breaking ball while more than doubling the usage of his change up. His control was also better in his second outing.

Adam Wainwright

An ageless wonder, if you will, Adam Wainwright is in his 18th season in the big leagues (I’m counting his 2011 that he missed). He’ll turn 41-years-old at the end of August this year. Since the start of 2020 he’s posted a 3.06 ERA in 45 starts for the Cardinals.

Last season he pitched well against both lefties and righties, but lefties did hit for a little more power against him than right-handers did. This season – granted it’s just three games – lefties have a .917 OPS against him, while righties are sitting at .595.

News and Notes

Luis Castillo set to pitch in Dayton this afternoon

Castillo is scheduled to start for the Dragons this afternoon and will throw 50 pitches (give or take a few) in his first rehab start in the minors after missing all of spring training.

Rotation re-alignment

In today’s gamenotes the rotation has a bit of a change in it. After the off day tomorrow, the rotation will be Reiver Sanmartin, Vladimir Gutierrez, and then Tyler Mahle. There are no probables listed after that. Hunter Greene had followed Gutierrez and preceded Mahle to this point in the season, but it seems that he’s being pushed with the help of the off day.

Jonathan India progressing as expected

Please sir, may I have another?

  2. Bet on Red

The Reds historically have been able to handle Wainwright, that is the only hope here

    • Grand Salami

The only historical figure is Joey. Moran has faced him a lot and had success. Besides that the entire team has had the equivalent of one or two games against him.

  3. CFD3000

I am concerned about Hunter Greene. If his fastball velocity had dropped from his typical 94 to suddenly 88 mph, we’d all be screaming for a physical, MRI, divining rod – something. The fact that he was still at 96 on Friday shouldn’t obscure the fact that this is a sudden, 4 or 5 mph decrease. I hope he’s physically okay. I’m worried he’s not.

Also, less Colin Moran and more anybody else, please. I’m really looking forward to having Barrero back and healthy to see what he can do over the course of (most of) a full season. Good news on Castillo at least. Now how about a Reds win?

  4. Votto4life

Castillo struck out the side in the first inning.

    • Votto4life

Two sit out innings 4 strikes so far throwing in the mid-90s

      • Old-school

        You spoke to soon.
2 walks a hit and done after 48 pitchers in the 3rd inning.

  5. gusnwally

I’m a big fan of Nick Lodolo, so I am going to give the game a try. If it doesn’t work out I will go back to betting the races.

  6. Tom Mitsoff

John Sadak just said the Reds claimed Matt Reynolds on waivers and DFA’d Ryan Hendrix.

  7. Bet on Red

Well I guess Ryan Hendricks is not part of the future

  8. Old-school

This team is not good and flawed but very injured and why 2-13 instead of 6-7. The 2018 team was unwatchable with its SP.

    Homer Bailey 1-14 with a 6.09 ERA
Sal Romano was awful and got 25 starts.
    Matt Harvey got 24 starts.

    Grasping at straws.

    • Bet on Red

gosh, i almost forgot that Harvey was on the reds. He is sucking for the O’s now. Thank goodness we didnt get him long term

  9. MBS

Hendrix isn’t a big loss. I don’t get why we’d sign Reynalds? Is Solano not coming back?

  10. MBS

How is Votto the only one who took BP? Is Pham happy with his .133 BA or Senzel with his .107, etc. This team has no heart.

    • Tom Mitsoff

Did it rain this morning in Cincy? I have no idea.

    • J

If they’ve been taking batting practice all year, then not taking batting practice is probably a pretty good idea.

    • Bet on Red

Its sunday, instead of practicing they were praying for the bats lol

  11. Tom Mitsoff

Three very good at-bats in the first four hitters. Not sure we’ve seen any innings this season where three Reds batters had good at-bats.

    • Tom Mitsoff

Make that four good at-bats out of five. SF by Moran.

  12. magi210

For the first time in a while, the Reds lead at the bottom of an inning.

  13. kevinz

Nice SF Moran been rooting for you.
    Dang Senzel seems always something.
    Hope nothing big.

  14. Old-school

Senzel opposite field RBI hit…back to 2018 approach before the Turner Ward destruction of the Reds.

Hopefully his hand is ok. He tries too hard which is why he gets hurt. baseball is controlled aggression and he hasn’t mastered the control part.

  15. Old-school

Lopez just puts the bat on the ball and gives you a good at bat.

yes- India comes back Tuesday and Riddle goes down and Stephenson late week so Kolosvary goes down but what happens when Moose comes back later this week? You are really going to send down Lopez over Drury or Aquino? If they cant send down Drury because they need a backup SS, then cut Aquino and give Lopez an OF glove.

Lopez has elite bat to ball skills. That’s a major league talent.

    • MBS

Lopez can back up SS, I forget what offseason league he was in but he played SS for his team. If it’s more than an off day type of thing, that might be an issue until Barrero comes back from the IL.

    • Kevin H

Reds have Fraley as a 4th outfielder. Lopez has to stay in my opinion. Cut Aquino and move on. Remember too Farmer can play outfield as well. Not sure Farmer has anything to do with it as he is ss for now. lol

  16. Hanawi

Ready to see Lopez in the lineup for the foreseeable future. Makes contact which is desperately needed.

  17. J

I’ve mostly watched games this year with the sound off. Turned it up to see what it sounds like when the Reds are actually winning a game, just in time to hear Sadak use one of his favorite made-up phrases — “he makes the glove” — and quickly remembered why I usually have the sound off.

    • dhmorgan

I almost always push the mute button when I’m watching a game because I like to do other things (read, listen to music, etc.) so I’m ignorant of these verbal pearls from the commentators.
      But “he makes the glove?”
      What does that even mean?

      • J

It’s a cross between “he makes the play” (or perhaps “he makes the catch”) and “he gloves it.” It’s used anytime a fielder catches a ball or fields a grounder.

    • MBS

LOL, Either he’s being less of a Sadak this year or he’s growing on me. The 3rd, and more depressing reason could be, I am so annoyed by the play of the Reds that Sadak doesn’t even register on my annoyance meter.

      • dhmorgan

        “Less of a Sadak.”
        Hah!
Perfect way to keep the language clean.

  18. Bet on Red

They are trying to get people to the ballpark to….try the new food…. don’t think that I do not notice what is going on here

  19. Hanawi

Lodolo pitching well so far. Has improved each outing. Seems like he’s here to stay now. Not sure how many innings he’ll be able to pitch this year, but like what I’m seeing from him.

  20. Kevin H

So who goes down when Castillo comes back? Sanmartin, or Guiterrez? I feel Greene and Lodolo are here to stay.

    • Bet on Red

Sanmartin is my bet, unless Greene’s velocity reduction leads to a IL stint

    • MBS

If Greene is only pushing 95 mph in his next start, it might be him. Just to let his arm rest, but I’d guess Sanmartin is the most likely to get sent down.

    • VaRedsFan

To build strength pitchers need to throw MORE….not rest and then try to start back up again

      • MBS

I’m don’t think arm strength is the issue, maybe an injury of some sort. Rest can help heal injuries.

      • VaRedsFan

If he was injured he would definitely would not be pitching at all

      • Kevin H

His velocity was down from previous starts. You don’t want to keep pitching Greene if his Velocity continues downward.

  21. VaRedsFan

I love stolen bases, but don’t even attempt it if you are going to slide feet first

  22. Gpod

How bad of a jump did Nick S get in order to still be thrown out on such a horrific throw

  23. Old-school

Chris Sale looks pretty good so far.

  24. kevinz

Like being aggressive on the Bases.
But have to be smart about.
Team not built or smart enough to smartly run the bases imo.

  25. Old-school

Maybe Senzel just cant steal bases- but up 3-0 is exactly when you are aggressive and trying to tack on runs and get in scoring position.

    • kevinz

      Agree said liked being aggressive.
Just do not trust this team being smart about it.
Been Horrible so far making outs on the bases.

  26. JB

Wow!! I just turned the game on and the good guys(or bad guys) are winning. I see the Front Office is still grabbing guys off the garbage pile.

  27. Tom Mitsoff

It’s going to take more than three runs to win this game.

  28. Old-school

    Lodolo awesome
    5 2/3 innings 1 run

Greene and Lodolo are as advertised

  29. Mark A Verticchio

Why would you let him pitch to Arenado get the out and then pull him. I hope this move works out or Bell is going to have some explaining to do.

  30. Mark A Verticchio

That was a big out, but I also don’t think 3 runs will win this game. I would have left Lodolo in, this is about the future and he needs t learn to get out of tough situations..

    • Tom Mitsoff

Not in recent appearances. He’s been very shaky. Bell is going to have to get through the final three innings with Santillan, Wilson, Warren and Sims (if Sims is available today).

  31. JB

Moran is growing on me here. Only as a DH though . I close my eyes on pop-ups to him. There are worse guys on this team to let go.

    • Tom Mitsoff

He’s 4-for-15 against righties. Not world-beating, but way above average for this team at the moment. He certainly fits in the current roster alignment as the DH against righties.

      • JB

Lol I know. We have to lower the bar for this team. I would keep him over Moose easily.

  32. Kevin H

Senzel has 3 hits in last 6 ab’s small sample size, however a start.

  33. gusnwally

Great job Nick. I really believe he has star power. I think he will be the ace of the staff in the coming years.

  34. Bet on Red

They still doing the 11 k free pizza deal?

    • Tom Mitsoff

For people who have tickets, I believe. But I’m not 100 percent sure.

  35. JB

Where is Fraley? Did I miss something? Did Bell finally figure out him and Aquino don’t need to play anymore?

    • Tom Mitsoff

Bell said before the game he’s been injured. Back in a couple of days.

  36. Old-school

The Wainwright, Molina, Pujols reunion tour isnt going to wear well over the big 162

They are old and not good.

Reds are the better team so far and its not close.

Great Sp, good hitting. Need the BP to finish

  37. Vitto4life

Dayton Dragins stay in a roll beating Western Michigan 9-2

Elly De La Cruz with his 3 home run of the year today.

Castillo 2.1 innings 2 hits 3 walks and 4 strike outs. Fastball in the mid-90s

    In Louisville
    Bats los

Almora Jr. 4 for 5 now hitting .429

    • Votto4life

      *Dragons

      Enjoying MiLB.TV so far

  38. Eddie

What a good game for lodolo very interesting interview with Jim day pregame. This was fun to see take the lead first inning add in the 2nd and good young pitching and bullpen doing their part finally something click.

  39. Votto4life

Cowboy mentioned the Mets are without Conforto for the rest of the year. I know he is injured, but he is a free agent right?

    • Tom Mitsoff

He just had surgery on his shoulder this past week. Out for the year. Injured himself while working out during the lockout.

    • Tom Mitsoff

And yes, he is a free agent, not with the Mets.

  40. Kevin H

Any word in a couple reds prospects. Ivan Johnson and Tyler Callihan? I noticed both are extended spring training. Callihan got hurt last year, however Johnson made it to triple A.

  41. Bet on Red

Votto’s BA may not be going up, but his OPS surely is

  42. Old-school

Farmer now 0-14 and hitting .236 with wRC+ of less than 80

September of 2021 was concentrated against 3 teams who quit- Cubs/Pirates/marlins.

April of 2022 joins August/June/May/April of 2021 as well as 2020/2019/2018/2017.

Farmer is not an every day SS.Hes a utility player who cant hit righties

    • Kevin H

He passes the eye test. He is a solid ball player. I don’t buy into the analytics or war stuff. Farmer to me is a solid ball player.

      • SOQ

Agree about the eye test. He was batting over .300 before his 4 game slump. Plus he’s thrown out 3 runners at the plate and leads the team in RBI’s (prior to today). He’ll bounce back

    • Hanawi

Reds have two full-time players for their next good team (Stephenson and India) right now. Rest of the team is utility players or guys that should be DFA’d.

    • Tom Mitsoff

He is as reliable as they come defensively. On a team with a strong offense, he would fit nicely. A team that hits as poorly as this one should put a better hitter wherever possible if the defense is decent.

  43. Bet on Red

WHat is this thing called…. when the game ends and we have more runs then the other team… i forgot the name

    • TR

A well played game. Congrats to Lodolo. Just win as many series as possible and avoid last place.

  44. Votto4life

Our long national nightmare in over.

  45. Dayton Ducks

I’ll never forget where I was when the 2022 Reds snapped their 11-game losing streak.

  46. Eddie

I wonder if Jake Fraley will be cut he hasn’t been in a lineup for awhile now and Moran might be cut with reds trade today from Mets design assignment player who utility player but hasn’t done well in big league and his age is 31. Riddle did very good love the 2 defense plays in the 9th mostly. Finally broke the losing streak. Reds cut hendrix today to make room
