After how things went last night revolving around Tyler Stephenson and Luke Voit’s collision at the plate, and the words from several players after the game, this afternoon’s contest could get rather interesting – but it’s not going to involve Voit, who is not in the lineup. Cincinnati will send Vladimir Gutierrez to the mound and the Reds hitters will take on yet another left-handed pitcher in rookie MacKenzie Gore for the Padres.

Starting Lineups

And here are the lineups for this afternoon’s contest:

Cincinnati Reds

Aristides Aquino – RF Wil Myers – RF
Colin Moran – 3B Jorge Alfaro – C

Vladimir Gutierrez 8.1 5.40 1.92 12.2% 17.0%

Vladimir Gutierrez

If you’re an opposing manager you want to put as many lefties in the lineup as you can against Gutierrez. He doesn’t miss their bats and they hit for a ton of power against him. Or at least they did in 2021 (and this season there are hitting .35/.474/.571 against him with twice as many walks as strikeouts through two games). With that said, Gutierrez has also pitched significantly better on the road (3.80 ERA, .698 OPS against on the road vs 5.94 ERA at home with a .931 OPS against) last season.

MacKenzie Gore

The lefty will be making just his second big league start. In his debut he allowed two runs on three hits and two walks – including a home run – while striking out three batters. Gore, formerly a Top 10 prospect in all of baseball, fell out of many Top 100’s after he struggled in 2021 that saw the team send him all the way back to their spring training complex to work on his mechanics for two months.

2021 Splits

It doesn’t feel useful to cite his splits in the minors last year given that he pitched so little in games and when he did, nearly half of his innings were in rookie or A-ball.

News and Notes

Tyler Stephenson placed on the injured list

The Reds placed catcher Tyler Stephenson on the 7-day concussion injured list prior to the game this afternoon. That puts the number of players on the injured list for Cincinnati at 13. Mark Kolozsvary was called up from the taxi squad to replace Stephenson on the roster as the teams other catcher.

Tommy Pham is ready to fight

C. Trent Rosecrans’ game article from last night has some not-so-phamily friendly words from outfielder Tommy Pham about the slide from Luke Voit that led to what appears to be a concussion for Tyler Stephenson. Pham said after this to the media after the game:

The way his hands hit him in the face — it was dirty. If Luke wants to settle it, I get down really well. Anything — muay thai, whatever. Like I said, I’ve got an owner here who will let me use his (boxing) facility. So (eff) ’em.

He is a boob. Just like Reds ownership. Mountains, Aquinas and Moran have no business on this team. An embarrassing situation.

      • Klugo

Whoa! Don’t insult boobs like that.

  1. Luke J

I think you meant C.J. Abrams at short for the Padres. I had to double check that Cron was still on the Rockies since he’s one of my wife’s favorite players. lol

    • Doug Gray

      Whoopsies!

Fixed. Thanks for the heads up.

  2. Fanman

Pham may actually win in this contest. Sounds more interesting than Reds streaking to ninth in a row

  3. Votto4life

I don’t think Tyler Stephenson needs help from Tommy Pham. Pham is quickly becoming one of my least favorite Reds.

  4. LDS

My guess is that if Puig or even Garrett were still Reds, this issue would have been settled last night.

    • Rednat

wish we never got rid of Puig, or jose Iglesias for that matter

    • Mark Moore

With fines and suspensions handed out today …

I’m normally not one to go all-in on retaliation according to the “rules” of old-time baseball. But the cheap elbow to the noggin resulting in a 7-day concussion protocol needs some response other than just verbal.

Here’s hoping we salvage a W as we limp away from the West Coast.

  5. SultanofSwaff

Well, maybe Pham’s comments will wake the team up. Us vs. them kinda thing. No substitute for health and talent, but maybe enough to get you a win. Go Reds!

  6. Bet on Red

I strongly suspect that Voit is not in the lineup so we do not “fight tonight”

  7. JB

Let’s go Reds! Let’s turn it around today. Why not Us!!!

    • Bet on Red

wrong cincinati team there… authough we are at the point of exploring signing Joe, Chase, higgings and boyd if the injuries continue

      • JB

I tried to be positive. Worked for the Bengals!

      • Bet on Red

Deage joey Votto 12 years to his 2010 year and then you have the Reds Joe Burrow

  8. Melvin

Here’s hoping Senzel can stay on the field. As for fighting today, haha, that’s all we need with all of the injuries already. We can’t afford suspensions either at this point.

      • Melvin

Yeah. Not much difference between him and Puig. 🙂

  9. redsfan4040

No 1st inning Machado homer today! Improvement!

    • Votto4life

I was watching the MLB network earlier today and they broke down Manny Machado’s swing. Man, it’s a thing of beauty.

  10. AllTheHype

Wow. AA goes 3-0 then swings and misses on two fat 93 mph FBs down the middle. If he can’t make contact with fat FBs in the zone, he needs to be DFA’d in favor of ANY MiL warm body.

Of course, Bell has him batting 6th in the lineup because 3 years ago he had one good month of baseball.

  11. Daytonnati

Okay, if my math is correct, Aquino will bat 1000 times and get 59 hits?

  12. Indy Red Man

Reds with 3 guys over .171 in the lineup
    2 guys over .200
    1 guy over .208

    Thats some soccer like excitement.

  13. Mark A Verticchio

Let’s pick him up, ha ha.

  14. LarkinPhillips

Senzel should wear every piece of protective equipment at the plate. Extra face protection on the helmet, elbow pad, hand protector, shin protector, and foot protector.

  15. Kevin H

Can’t wait till Naquin, India, Stephenson, and Moose are back. They are better than AA, Moran, and the two catchers the reds have now

  16. AllTheHype

Aquino has now tied a ML record. 20 Ks in first 30 ABs ties him with Rick Ankiel (2013) as the most by a non-pitcher to start a ML season.

If he Ks one more time today, he will break the record.

    Congrats AA!

    • AllTheHype

correction he now has 36 ABs so he will have to take solace in having the second most Ks by a non-pitcher to start a season.

  17. JB

That’s probably the game right there.

    • MBS

LOL, all hope is lost with this team. What happened to the comeback Reds? I’m feeling it today, we got this W.

      • Tom Mitsoff

Unfortunately, they have only a handful of major league position players currently on the roster. And the pitching staff is mostly young guys trying to get experience.

The current roster is similar to an expansion team, for those who remember what that is.

      • Tom Mitsoff

And Colin Moran is not among them. 😉

      • MBS

I’m fine with the pitching, but yes, the position players are subpar, I am typing this, and in mid sentence I see Moran drop the pop out. Sad.

      • TR

Expansion team is an excellent description of this version of the Reds.

  18. Kevin H

Curious to know, have the reds tried to sacrifice bunt this season, or hit and run?

    • RED THUNDER

Those type of plays aren’t in the reds playbook much anymore! Even less with the DH

    • Votto4life

I think advance analytics cautions against the sacrifice bunt, stolen base and the hit and run. I think that is why they are seldom used these days.

Those plays may not pay-off, but they sure made the games more entertaining.

      • greenmtred

Sacrifice bunts only make sense when there are runners on base in a close game. Both conditions exclude the 2022 Reds so far.

  19. Mark A Verticchio

That is a very good question, Bell’s only defense could be that with this horrible offense he is afraid to give up an out. However, I think I am over thinking that. I just wonder how long this can go before they have to make a move, Bell or Krall. I do think that they have to let Aquino go tomorrow and it doesn’t matter who they replace him with.

    • Josh G

yeah.. not sure why he is there and drury is DH’ing

    • Votto4life

Who is the better third baseman Moose or Colin Moran?

  20. Bet on Red

9 in a row…. and dont even try to kid me into some “keep the hope” or “why not us”, that works when the Front Office sets up a team for success, not guts it. I cant even blame bell for this, although he isnt helping either

      • Bet on Red

Imma gonna believe that when Football starts up in September I ain’t watching the reds on Sunday no more

  21. Mark A Verticchio

This nightmare is just getting worse by the day. My question is when will they win another game. I could easily see the Cardinals sweeping them. I look for the next win to come sometime next week against the Pads. the losing streak could easily reach 12. The one caveat I will throw in is if Green has a solid performance Friday and they some how steal a run or 2. Boy it sure would be nice to beat St. Louis but I am not counting on it.

    • Tom Mitsoff

At the moment, they literally don’t have the collective offensive talent to put more than two or three batters on base in any inning. That won’t work when you’re down by three runs, as they are here in the sixth inning.

    • Votto4life

Losing may be the best thing that could happen to this team right now. If it means Nick Krall is fired then I’m ok with the losing streak continues a few more games.

  22. JB

Reds haven’t scored 3 or more runs since last Thursday. I’m thinking the curtain has dropped today.

  23. Kevin H

The worse thing to happend injuries to key guys and no plan in place. Heck bring up Allen or Hendrick, not sure they would do worse than AA. They had a solid team and say what you will about Barnhart Winker and Suarez but I gotta believe Reds would be at least 500 this early in season. We will never know of course. I didn’t add Nick as he wasn’t gonna resign. Just sad right now with this team.

    • Tom Mitsoff

One key problem is that they have no legit position player prospects at the Class AAA level. And it’s particularly a problem because there are no top-prospect outfielders.

  24. Bred

Would some one remind me why they gave up on Siri? He doing better than what the Reds are running out there.

  25. Deafmix3

With the pause for the pitching change on the way to a 9th loss in a row, I did a little math… It confirmed what I thought – the Moustakas signing is a crippling disaster, one of the worst in baseball history. The $64 m he signed for (after the Brewers let him walk) is guaranteed, and he clearly took to mean he didn’t have to ever do any conditioning again. As of now, he has 74 hits in 353 ABs for the Reds, for a .209 average. That works out to $864,865.00 per hit. Sure, he’ll come back at some point this year, get another dozen hits and then hurt himself again. Maybe when all is said and done, he’ll be worth, oh, $750,000 per hit.

So what I don’t get is why anyone calls him “Moose.” “Moose” is like an affectionate nickname. You give affectionate nicknames to people who try, not to people who steal from you. He should be called “Slug” or “Hog.” Or “Thief.”

    • Indy Red Man

Well if there was someone with the name Hogtakas then they might get called “Hog”. Lollllllllllllll. Sounds Greek? IDK? They should talk about things like that on the TV broadcast to distract the hundreds of viewers away from the Reds

  26. Old-school

Reds are a true 3 outcome offense

    Strikeout
    Groundout
    Popout

    • Bet on Red

Three true outcomes of a reds fan.

      Stand up
      Grab remote
      Turn off

      • RedsGettingBetter

And… Where are ya gonna go?…

  27. Bet on Red

White flag out only down by three…. would never have happend last year

  28. William

The Reds went from a good hitting club to one of the worst.

  29. JB

Out hitting the Padres 5-3 and losing. The offense is terrible.

  30. William

Moustakas has been one of worst signings in Reds history.

    • Daytonnati

Maybe a jpg of a Moose with braces is still available?

  31. William

Two and eleven is close to firing country.

    • LDS

Well past that time. At least as long ago as post season 2020. Bell, Zinter, DJ, Krall, Phil – time for a firing fest.

    • Votto4life

I hope Nick Krall is fired before the trading deadline before he trades Luis Castillo to the Mets for the rights to Bobby Bonilla.

  32. Indy Red Man

    Milw -1 cashed
    Phils/Rocks Over 11.5 cashed
    Vlad Under 3.5 Ks cashed

Pham Over 1.5 bases? IDK? One to go

    • Old-school

I might need some tutoring on this to stay interested past the 4 th inning the next few months

    • Indy Red Man

Ouch. I rarely bet those, but Pham has been cranking the ball in this series

      • Bet on Red

i would have taken a player bet on Pham but after the comments, i think his mojo was out due to the slide. Wait until he gets hot again, then he will become a good bet again

  33. William

It is just not justice that the General Manager keeps his job, while so many good Reds were kicked out door. Winker should have been extended, not traded.

  34. William

Go Reds! Somebody has to root for you.

  35. Gpod

The day Bell gave away the game against Cleveland & I said you can’t throw away a game you had a legitimate chance to win ….since that game the Reds obviously haven’t won a game or really been close to winning a game….please tell me what David Bell has done to warrant him as a major league managers? I can say, without question, when he finally gets canned….he will never again sniff a major league manager position

  36. Votto4life

What was the record of the 1962 New Mets?

If they lose today, the Reds are on pace to finish something like 36-126.

Where are you going to go?

    • Votto4life

Sorry, it’s more like 28-134. Didn’t mean to get everyone’s hopes up.

  37. Old-school

The irony is reds and Jim Day and Sajack already moving on to the cavalry is coming in Lucas Sims and Castillo… except what do they do when those 2 guys pitch well in may june july?
    Trade them

    • Gpod

      Not to mention…..THEY DON’T HIT!!

    • Indy Red Man

I don’t know those guys could hit?

  38. Bet on Red

And now balley sports just piles on with a Miami Valley Gaming commercial…. Make it stop

      • Nick in NKY

The guy who does that line is the most Ohio guy to ever Ohio. Can’t change my mind.

  39. Gpod

The only joy coming out of a 26 win season…..maybe, just maybe…there would be a chance Bell would be gone

  40. Daytonnati

The alternative history of the Reds not signing Moose is interesting. Senzel probably still at second base. India might have been blocked at third by Geno, but maybe he moves to short? With the extra $16 mil a year, you could see Winker extended and maybe Castellanos retained? Reds Meta-verse might be a fun exercise 🙂

  41. Bet on Red

once the bullpen settles itself out after the injured pitchers return…hunter Strickland better be gone

  42. Old-school

Hunter badenhop-hembree-bedrosian- fulmer-strop- storen strickland another nice bullpen pickup

    • Joe P.

you forgot Ohlendorf and Jumbo and Delabar

  43. RedsMonk65

This team is simply no fun in any way, shape, or form. None. Nada.

  44. Mark A Verticchio

This team right now resembles the 62 Mets they are a joke and it is very sad. They may have to fire Bell just to do something even though Krall should be the first to go.

    • Moon

I was watching the game free on a mlb66 streaming feed. They have a running chat function that includes all fans so you see comments from the fans from all the teams in MLB. I can tell you right now the Reds are a laughing stock across the league….

    • TR

Firings usually mean someone has to be in charge.

  45. Mark Moore

I dropped out to finish fixing dinner (did a nice cheese steak on my flat top griddle). Just checked and saw we’re getting shut out through 8. Would be nice if we got at least a run across to avoid the goose egg, but I suppose that doesn’t really matter.

Frustrating beyond belief. I’m at a loss for words.

  46. Indy Red Man

Drury is hitting .192 with 2 HRs. As a veteran big time producer he can lay down the law with all the guys that aren’t hitting.

  47. Magnum 44

I am going to leave the nicest comment on on this club I knew it was going to be bad but WOOF! reallocating more like relocating the money in Bob’s pockets. #get the pitching #get the hitting

  48. Joe P.

The Reds have scored only 13 runs in the last 8 games and 37 runs total in the first 13 games.

The # of runs by inning for the first 13 games:

    1st: 2
    2nd: 1
    3rd: 7
    4th: Zero
    5th: 3
    6th: 13
    7th: 1
    8th: 3
    9th: 7

    • Mark Moore

Second and third times through appear to be killing us. And that “7” in the 9th is really rough, especially when you consider we’ve not played the 9th in many games.
