Interested to see if Santillan gets stretched out and throws 2 innings.

Thought lodolo was supposed to pitch today. Santillan instead or is he coming in after lodolo.

    • MK

Santillan seems to be so much more confident in the pen than he did as a starter and I hope that doesn’t get messed up by starting him. I’d leave him alone and just have a bullpen game. With the DH they should be able to get by with not changing pitcher due to pinch hitting for the pitcher.

    Santillan 2 scoreless innings

Pencil in mahle gutierrez and Santillan as SP the first 2 weeks with Castillo and Minor delayed

Interesting to see what happens with Lodolo and Ashcraft as both got to ST early and are ahead in their throwing programs.

Maybe Lodolo gets his first mlb start and Ashcraft gets a cup of coffee in the bullpen as long relief with bell saying probably 15 pitchers and 13 position guys

I’d rather make Santillan a late inning reliever and eventually the closer.

      1 – Mahle
      2 – Gutierrez
      3 – Greene
      4 – Lodolo
      5 – Sanmartin

Send Greene and Lodolo back down when Minor and Castillo come back and move Sanmartin to the bullpen when Dunn comes back

      • MBS

Is Minor going to miss opening day, I mean we haven’t seen him in game action. I thought I read he was on pace somewhere. If he’s not ready, I like your 5.

      • Old-school

Minor and Castillo wont be ready

      • RedsGettingBetter

This five is logical after the injuries of Castillo and Minor. Although I would switch Greene and Lodolo so the lefties aren’t back to back after 3 righties. It would be Mahle, Gutierrez, Lodolo, Greene, SanMartin. Also, It is possible Ashcraft could reach the 5th spot if he continues pitching pretty good.

      • MK

By the sound of it if they get 35 innings out of Dunn it will be a miracle.

On the Reds web page they are currently showing 41 persons on the 40-man roster and does not include Pham yet. I imagine Antone will go on the 60-day IL but any guesses on next couples DFA’s on the list?

    • AllTheHype

Hopefully Akiyama, but I’d guess they give him til July to prove (again) that his a not a MLB player. Big contracts on small market teams guarantee a roster spot and playing time regardless of performance. It’s an unfortunate reality in MLB.

Can anyone explain why there would ever be days with no game in a shortened spring training? What’s the purpose of a day off right now? There’s an odd number of teams in AZ, but they have enough guys to play split squads, so the number of teams shouldn’t make any difference.

Also, I just noticed there are teams with two days off, three days off, and no days off. How do they wind up with such different schedules in such a short period of time? Is there any logical rationale for any of this?

    • J

(The most common number of days off is one, which is what the Reds have.)

    • MK

Sometimes bodies and brains need a break. There are no world class athletes that don’t take a planned day off in their training.

      • J

But apparently not if they play for certain teams, because some teams have no days off. And which of the Reds players would need a break right now? Has anyone even played two days in a row? Sorry, but I don’t think the day off has anything to do with anyone needing a break from anything.

      • VaRedsFan

They have every other day off as nobody starts back to back games. No need for a team to have an off day.

    Bob Castellini

“We are outspending our market size of 29 th”

    There u have it

The goal is to finish higher than your market size and spend more than 2nd worst

    Job well done!!!!

With thinking like that , it’s amazing he is rich. He is one of those people that just walks into money without a clue on what he’s doing. I believe they call it “dumb luck”.

If (when) Castillo and Minor start the year on the IL, I kind of hope O’Brien is given a shot at starting at MLB level. He could slide into the 5th spot and start vs Cleveland.

At least until the staff is at full strength I really hope Santillan is part of the rotation. I understand why some want to see him in long relief or as a closer, but I’m still in the “give your best pitchers the most innings” camp. Here’s hoping Santillan is on track to start the season as a starter.

    • Redsvol

I agree. I’d like to see santillan starting the beginning of the season. Let’s see him fail at that before permanently making him a bullpen arm. He’s also much more valuable around the league as a starter.
