His lefty/righty splits are just as drastic. Right-handed hitters are hitting .268/.344/.506 with 18 home runs against him while lefties are hitting just .186/.261/.286 against him with five home runs in just 46 fewer plate appearances.

    Do I bother?

Probably so. An addiction is an addiction.

    • SOQ

Beats “The Young and Restless” I guess

      • RedsMonk65

My mother would definitely opt for the soap! 🙂

  2. LDS

Insanity, doing the same thing repeatedly and expecting a different result. I guess since Naquin isn’t progressing well, they won’t make a roster move until Winker is recalled

    • realist

yeah and then all of a sudden Naquin will be on DL for the rest of the year. Isn’t that how it seems to go?

  3. realist

I am watching, I have morbid curiosity. I want to watch the ship sink all the way below the surface.

  4. Bet on Red

Unfortunate about Naquin. Unfortunately if he is truly unavailable then this is effectively the best lineup, (although, you could put anyone else in center and say the same thing). Mahle needs to live to his stat line. I really hate opposing BP days.

  5. Ghostrunner_onthird

Given the trend, Connor Overton will look like a Cy Young candidate by the 4th inning.

  6. Gpod

being swept by the pitiful pirates would just put a cherry on the the top of this epic meltdown….not to mention the dodgers heading to Cincinnati this weekend…yikes!

  7. Old-school

Tyler Mahle has had some huge starts this season when the season was on line

Beat max scherzer in may and beat cubs 5 days later when season in question. Hes been outstanding on the road

    Reds win today

    • Ghostrunner_onthird

I’d like to think so as well Old-school. Defining game; let’s see who steps up.

  8. Roger Garrett

Players played for themselves all year long despite the lack of help from the front office and from their manager. When Barrero was sent down to make room for Cabrera then that was the last straw.A 35 year old player that nobody wanted is acquired and given 15 and counting at bats to do nothing while a 23 year old athletic short stop is sent down.

  9. Klugo

I do wish you guys would include what hand pitchers throw with in your Game Thread thingy. I dont think anyone ever does.

    • Daytonnati

All you have to do is look at Bell’s lineup 🙂

      Moose facing Lefty
      Geno facing Righty

  10. Old-school

Shrock takes the high and away outside pitch and hits a line drive single LF

  11. Gpod

again Nick swinging at anything & everything….new day, same results

    • Mark A Verticchio

Remember the MVP chants for NC in June and July, oh how times have changed. Moose continues to do what Moose does, Bell is clueless.

      • Roger Garrett

He did foul one which is exactly what Votto did and one better then Nick who didn’t make contact.

    • Bet on Red

I always beleive it was a mistake for Nick not to take a rehab after the wrist. He never came back

  12. Old-school

Castellanos had the count 2-1 and swung at 2 balls diving out of the zone by a lot

Votto got same diet of 85 mpg nibbling and took the BB
Overton looks like poor mans kyle hendricks

Moose chases the 85 mph off the plate soft stuff

  13. Roger Garrett

Why would any big leaguer being suckered by a rookie making his first big league start that nibbles with soft stuff?Reds may not score in the Dodgers series when they face real pitchers.

    • Kevin H

They beat dodgers and “real pitchers ” in April 2 out of 3 games.

  14. Daytonnati

Okay, Mahle would have been out of the first with 11 pitches. Let’s see how this ends.

  15. Roger Garrett

Just a joke on offense and defense.Doesn’t somebody care enough to compete?

  16. Old-school

India had easy 4-3 out but tried to hurry and get 2 and got none

    Bad error
    Always get an out

  17. Bet on Red

Very nice turn by Mahle there… .

  18. dhmorgan

Good pickoff. He really fooled him.
You don’t see that too often.

  19. Bet on Red

India error defused. Now get some runs

  20. dhmorgan

I hope we’re not seeing the beginning of a new string of scoreless innings by the Reds’ hitters.
They need to shatter the Overton window before they get too deep into this game.

  21. Roger Garrett

Farmer never made contact on 3 straight soft ones.Shogo watches 2 more soft ones then doubles and Mahle swings on the first pitch.Forfiet now and get on the plane.Bring up the AAA team to finish the season and send everybody else home.

  22. Roger Garrett

We are facing a team that is 37 games under 500 and they stole a game last night and are swinging the bats today and stealing bases while we just go through the motions.Gone and Done. What a joke.

  23. Mark A Verticchio

Tired of announcers telling us how good a pitcher this guy is, tell the truth the Reds hitting is awful and most of these guys look disinterested.

    • Bob Purkey

Reds announcers(especially Larkin) said the same about Osich. My beer came out my nose with those comments.

  24. Ghostrunner_onthird

Either this guy is making us look really bad or we’re making this guy look really good. Too late to ask for a 7 inning game? Asking for a friend.

  25. Mark A Verticchio

Lets face the facts the last place Pirates look a lot better than the Reds.

  26. Gpod

i really don’t know why i keep watching this…..just add it to the list of Reds bad memories….if I can remember these correctly: up by 2 games for playoff spot with 3 games to play & lost the lead and had to play the Mets in a one game play in-of course, lost the game against Al Leiter……beat SF Giants in their home park the first 2 games of the 5 game playoff series, came home and got swept to be eliminated (had not been swept at home all season til that series)…..1st team ever to be no hit in a playoff game (vs Phillies)….last year, finally qualify for expanded playoffs, then proceed to score zero runs in 2 games and thus eliminated. Just add this year to the list. (unless a miracle takes place)

    • Mark A Verticchio

This is the worst because its been over a long period of time.

      • Gpod

One constant with the Reds since 1990…..failure

    • Luke J

Don Larsen would like a word concerning the 1st no hitter in a playoff game.

      • Bet on Red

I think that was a World Series game… a technicality to be sure

      • Luke J

Since when is a World Series not a playoff game?

      • Bet on Red

I think since its the Championship game(s), maybe he isnt counting it as playoffs. Your right, Larsen also threw a Perfecto. I think playoffs is just semantics

    • Daytonnati

Let’s not forget 2013 and Dusty’s lack of “urgency”. We end up getting “CUE-TOOOD” at PNC.

  27. Mark A Verticchio

Mahle has been dodging bullets all day, for gosh sake get him some runs……

  28. Mark A Verticchio

Bell and his right left ideas being out foxed again today, just play your best players.

  29. Bet on Red

Akiyama ensures howard will not be out for the next inning

  30. ryan

He was great for a while earlier this summer but what has .263 Joey done in the last two weeks?

    • old-school

The most under-reported story of the season is Joey Votto’s handed-ness splits. This is new for him.

The reality is Votto is very good and also very bad.
The game today put up a graphic and Votto has the 5th highest OPS against righties in all of baseball @ 1.024. Against righties Votto is Barry Bonds. Against lefties Votto is Jose Peraza

      Against RHP: .291/.394/.629/1.024 wRC+ 162
      Against LHP: .209/.301/.366/.666 wRC+ 79

Winker and Votto crush righties. That’s good for next year but also need big RH bat to pair at first base/DH with Votto. Stephenson and India wont be enough and Castellanos will be gone. Suarez was suppose to lead the brigade against lefties. Maybe you put him at DH some. Maybe Senzel comes back. Certainly, Farmer has done his share against lefties and Barrero has the potential.

  31. Mark A Verticchio

That is for sure. He looks lost at the plate and in the field.

    • Beaufort Red

I don’t see him flexing recently. He’s been as bad as Moose, Suarez, AA and the rest. I just see him ranting on the bench after every out. It’s like they’re saying “ sure Joey, whatever you say.”

  32. Indy Red Man

7 series losses in a row. You can’t get swept by a team starting a guy off Craigslist.

Where is our veteran leadership? Its not all on Bell. Goldschmidt, Arrenado, Molina, and Wainwright have righted their ship. What is going on with the Reds? This year was kind of fun, but this is all we’re going to remember.

    • Indy Red Man

For the record I would like to see Bell get canned. Cards are sweeping 190 mil Mets while we’re getting swept by dudes from Craiglist and the Guatamalan league. Most leagues have an All-Star break. They have a civil war break. Buy 1 machete get 1 free

  33. Bob Purkey

Are we going to get ANOTHER new batting coach next year? ? ? ?

    • jazzmanbbfan

Fans have called for a new batting coach almost every year for the last 20 years. When a new one comes in, they start the same tired song all over again. It’s not the batting coach, it’s the hitters.

  34. Mark A Verticchio

This is sad they can’t even hit the ball hard let alone get a hit and score a run. What an epic collapse and everybody is to blame.

  35. Gpod

how does losing 7 straight series down the stretch, against mostly inferior teams, not get your fired as a manager?

    • Daytonnati

Well, in Cincinnati, if you’re willing to take a pay cut to stay 🙂

    • Mark A Verticchio

He should be gone after today. He has lost this team, if he ever had it?

  36. Indy Red Man

I had a kid in little league that developed a strikeout phobia so he would only try to touch the ball with the bat instead of swinging it. Thats who Shogo reminds me of except he still strikes out. No adjective way that swing hit 20 hrs in any league. He’s done. He’s been done. Pay him to go away

  37. Old Big Ed

    Man, are the Reds bad.

Every team they play is faster than the Reds, better defensively than the Reds, smarter baserunners than the Reds, and better at situational hitting than the Reds. (Most high school teams are better at situational hitting than the Reds.) And over the last few days, the Reds have begun to give the vibe of “I can’t wait until this is over.” They are unlikely to finish .500 at this point.

I see a wholesale housecleaning over the off-season. New GM; new manager; new hitting coach; new third baseman; faster and younger players at multiple positions. And no Nick Castellanos, because he wants to play for a winner.

To be honest, I’d can Krall, Bell and Alan Zinter this afternoon, and let Freddie Benavides finish the season.

    • Votto4life

Yeah I think the players have checked out already. To be honest, I have pretty much have as well.

I hope you are right about the house cleaning. I like the players/coaches involved involved but for whatever reason, it isn’t working.

Since the team obviously isn’t going anywhere. I wouldn’t mind seeing the front office bring in a small ball approach.

Move the fences back (if that is even allowed?) and focus on speed and defense. It would be fun to watch at least.

      • Old Big Ed

Moving the fences back would apparently be an expensive engineering and construction task. Can’t really move the plate back, either.

They perhaps could raise the outfield fences and take out the first few rows of seats there.

  38. Daytonnati

To your point, it looked like Castellanos could not wait to get to the dugout on that called strike 3.

    • Old Big Ed

Right; it was on the outside corner. The Reds as a team have virtually no ability to take an outside pitch to the opposite field. Maybe GABP rewards pull hitting so much, that they all overswing to the point where they are all Suarez now.

And then they lose game after game to guys who punch hits to the opposite field when the situation allows for it.

Stephenson, by the way, is the exception to this rule. Moustakas will hit it to left field, but he does it by getting jammed and lucking the ball into left.

  39. Mark A Verticchio

They are not going to score today and that is an embarrassment against these pitchers. I agree Bell should be let go following the game. His team is giving no effort, just watch how they play especially Votto and Castellanos, horrible and sad.

  40. realist

The Mighty Pirates holding the Reds offense at bay. No worries even though Mahle is at 90 pitches we still have the bull pen ready to come in and save the day!

  41. RedsGettingBetter

I don’t understand the players’ attitude of desinterest in a game 0-0 and 1,5 games behind 2nd NLWC spot and 10 games remaining against last-place teams yet… What a lack of leadership really…

    • Old Big Ed

Correct. The leadership on this team is India and Stephenson. The veterans are pretty much useless right now.

  42. old-school

    Mahle did a great job
    6 shutout innings 4 hits 1 BB 4 K
    Solid effort.

Mahle now with 30 starts 165 innings 192 k and ERA 3.59 for the year.

    • Mark Moore

If he can increase his efficiency factor, he’s a keeper. I think he gets into his own head and then starts with the “nibbling” that leads to high pitch counts, cookies, and walks.

      • 2020ball

he needs to figure out how to get righties out more consistently

      • RedsGettingBetter

And He should figure out how to low GABP ERA so if he does it and keep the road ERA at 2021 level, then could get near to 18 wins in a season …

  43. Mark Moore

Finally!! Nice oppo double TySteve. Let’s rally behind that.

  44. realist

I heard Brantley on the Radio say the Reds are in a good spot because all of the other teams in the wild card hunt play good teams and when the reds come out of this funk hey will be in good shape cause they have a good offense. Also, he said it is good the Reds are playing a good team like the Dodgers cause they do better against good pitching. They sound like used car salesmen.

    • Mark Moore

Just a bit … it’s pressing things in an attempt to fill air space when the club is struggling like this.

    • Old Big Ed

Yeah, you can count on this bunch to rough up Walker Buehler.

    • Votto4life

I actually do think the Reds will play well against the Dodgers this weekend. I’m not sure they will win any of the games, but the Reds have a knack of playing up to or down to their competition.

Plus, they have played so poorly of late, they almost have to play better.

      • TR

The non-easy weekend schedule could be a positive.

    • Broseph

Playoffs usually amount to teams getting hot at the right time. Get Winker back, and start playing better this weekend and get hot right before the playoffs.

If this was the last game of the season and the Reds had that second wild card spot, I’d be really concerned, but they might just hit their stride at the right time.

  45. Bob Purkey

Seems like Farmer and Stevenson are the only two that can work the count for God’s sake!

    • Mark Moore

Shogo did it earlier. 11 pitches, I believe.

  46. Mark Moore

That worked … now we have to capitalize on it

Shogo looked like he’s done that before … just not in a Reds uniform 🙂

  47. Old Big Ed

Asdrubal as PH. Bell has the under.

      • Old Big Ed

Helps the under; Bell couldn’t risk a couple of rounds of extra innings, where they each score two runs/inning off the dregs of the bullpen.

  48. Mark Moore

Y’all know I’m not a big Tinker Bell fan by any stretch. I will say he’s very willing to ignore the old “save your 2nd catcher” from what I’ve observed. That, at least, is refreshing. Dangerous at times, but refreshing.

    • Luke J

Except why in the world do you take out Stephenson, who can actually hit, in order to pinch run for him. Then proceed to bunt his pinch runner over leading to a sac fly that an old lady with a walker could have scored on? Taking out your catcher in that instance was stupid if you ask me.

      • Old Big Ed

I agree. Even Moustakas could have taken third on the bunt and scored on the fly ball.

  49. Mark A Verticchio

He does have Farmer as insurance.

    • Mark Moore

That would be more of a dire emergency plan, I’d say.

  50. Gpod

it worked out perfectly…Asdrubal got to keep his batting avg perfect with the reds .000 and still got the run in….good job

  51. dhmorgan

Votto throws home on the third out.
    Take no chances.

  52. Mark A Verticchio

Pinch hit Suarez for Moose If nothing else a better defender. If he bats.

  53. Mark A Verticchio

Why is Aquino still on this team?

    • LT

Because he changed his stance and hit a couple home runs a while back. Same with Votto when he hit a couple HRs and baseball experts attributing to his stance change. I still have those articles. You sense my sarcasm right? Lol

  54. LT

I just looked at the game and saw this: Indian, Votto, Castellano, Moose combined 0 for 16. Just wow. Every game is do or die and this is the performance, just wow

  55. Mark A Verticchio

Castellanos could not look any worse, as mentioned earlier it seems obvious he doesn’t want to be here.

    • Luke J

If he doesn’t want to be here he had better start hitting. Going into free agency in a slump is usually not wise.

  56. Bob Purkey

Here goes the RH vs LH again, and guess what, Aquino whiffs. Give Schrock a chance(at least he can hit a bit) and then add Aquino afterwards for D.

    • RojoB

Except when Moustakas is up, then lefty left doesn’t matter…somehow

  57. Luke J

Sure glad Aquino pinch hit for Schrock. I’d hate to have our .329 hitter up there against a lefty. Better bring in that .179 hitter.

  58. RojoB

So Bell PH for Schrock against a LHP but no Suárez for Moustakas?

The guy is adrift in his own mind…either you love the matchup game or you don’t.

    • Chris Holbert

Young player versus $$ contract and veteran player…same ol…same ol

  59. Gpod

someone explain to me why he let moustakes hit there?????????

    • LT

Because Moose has a bigger mouth than Suarez. Moose talked about players wanting to win and stuff like that

    • Luke J

Suarez has actually been hitting lately. Bell can’t allow that. Putting the team in the best position to succeed is against the rules.

      • Gpod

will someone in the postgame interview ask Bell why he didn’t pinch hit for Moustakes in that spot?

      • Beaufort Red

Not a chance. Day only asks softball questions. This ain’t NY where reporters ( even if they’re jerks) hold personnel accountable.

  60. TR

The Moose doesn’t come through again.

  61. RedsGettingBetter

this game scoring 1-0 does not smell good…

  62. LT

Any news if Winker joins team tomorrow?

  63. LT

Castellano misses his OF all star partner

  64. Mark A Verticchio

I am with you all, I can’t believe he let Moose hit he goes against his own beliefs, let alone the defensive side where Suarez is much better than Moose. I would let Mickey go the 9th but he won’t. Good luck Givens. I hope they can catch today.

  65. Beaufort Red

Is Sadak trying to jinx this game. Bring up a loss to the Cubs in May. What a dope.

    • Votto4life

There was a post about Sadak’s birthday yesterday on the Cincinnati Reds FB page.

People were debating his skills as an announcer. Anyway, I was about to comment about what I liked/l and disliked about his broadcasting techniques, when I noticed his cute little daughter had posted “Happy Birthday Daddy! “.

Needless to say, I ended up just complimenting him 🙂

  66. Mark A Verticchio

How can you give back to back walks in that situation?

  67. LDS

Why exactly did he pull Lorenzen with only 13 pitches? Givens hasn’t been doing well for the last few outings. The first two batters were LH’ers. More of Bell’s unfathomable substitutions.

    • Dennis Westrick

Again, Bell is cluless and this team wins in spite of him! Personally, I wish he would get tossed in the 1st inning of every game for arguing balls & strikes!

  68. LDS

Wow that was close. I’m not looking forward to the weekend after this performance against the Pirates.

  69. LT

Beyond torture lol. But it’s W for the hood guys. A weekend series against LA in mid September with playoff hope alive, there will be more torture.

  70. 2020ball

nice to see Cabrera finally contribute. Big win we needed it.

  71. dhmorgan

A win is a win, lackluster though it may have been.
But the hitting/scoring lethargy doesn’t give me much hope going forward that the Reds are going to make it to the wild card.
I’ll be happy if they prove me wrong.

  72. 2020ball

scrolling up and you’d think the Reds werent winning today. Ah well everyone, “enjoy” the win ?

      • TR

But the 7th. lost series in a row ends with a win on travel day.

  73. RedsGettingBetter

very very dramatic win… What a lot of suffering… really pathetic… Now go home and wait for the almighty Dodgers to try taking one game at least from the series, while STL plays SD… 1-0 Jeeess…

  74. Gpod

i saw the pitchers for the dodgers this weekend: Buehler, Scherzer, Kershaw……can we all have a moment of prayer

  75. Bob Purkey

Let’s see. . .Buehler on Friday, Scherzer on Saturday, and Kershaw on Sunday!

The good news is(if you can call it that) is league leader in W’s, LHP Urias, is not pitching!

    • RedsGettingBetter

Well… going back to april when th Reds faced LAD at LA everybody believed the Reds went to be swept by Dodgers because that was a very tough time for them as now it is…But Cincy won 2 of 3 from the series… It is just baseball…

  76. Dennis Westrick

Yes, a win is a Win! Need the Giants to win which would move the Reds ahead of the Padres! Then, need the Padres to take at least 3 of 4 against the Dirty Birds and hope by some miracle that the Reds can win 2 of 3 against the Dodgers! Laugh if you want but stanger things have happened! Just look at the last 2 weeks of last season!

    • TR

The Reds took the series from the Dodgers at the end of April in LA. Could it happen at GABP this weekend?

  77. Mark A Verticchio

The best thing I can say is that despite everything that has gone wrong, a lot, on September 17th the Reds will wake up one game out of the wild card. I think on opening day most of us would have taken that. Now the bad, they should be in a much better situation. But it is what it is.
