Starting Pitchers

Tyler Mahle

Coming off of a 1-run, 5.2 inning effort that included eight strikeouts, Tyler Mahle will take the mound on the road this afternoon against Miami.

Pitching on the road has been where Tyler Mahle has thrived this season. His OPS against is 321 points lower on the road (.557) and his ERA is 1.84 (6.00 at home). He’s been far more successful against lefties than righties, with lefties hitting just .183/.262/.279 against him, but righties posting a .273/.343/.518 line.

Jesús Luzardo

When the season began for Luzardo he was pitching for Oakland. But he was acquired in a trade at the deadline and headed off to Miami. When acquired, Luzardo had been pitching in Triple-A. His ERA was 6.52 in Las Vegas, so the obvious move for Miami was to bring him directly to the big league club. He’s made five starts for the Marlins since the deal and his ERA has been 9.67 as he’s allowed 31 hits, five homers, walked 17, and struck out 20 batters in 22.1 innings.

In 2021 he hasn’t shown any meaningful splits. Lefties have a .949 OPS against him. Righties have a .996 OPS against him. His home and road splits are a bit different, but both are terrible (7.24 ERA at home, 9.31 ERA on the road) and given that he’s spent time with two teams – it’s not too useful other than to say he’s pitched very poorly everywhere.

Anyone else think about how scary it is that the Reds “poached” Derek Johnson from the Brewers after 2018, yet now the Brewers have one of the best pitching staffs in baseball from top to bottom? And if I’m not mistaken, most of their pitching talent is home-grown.

Meanwhile, the Reds rely on a starting pitching staff that features a former Brewer, a former Yankee/A, and a former Marlin. Aside from the rookie Gutierrez, Mahle is the only starter developed by the Reds organization. Quite frankly, his home/road splits probably have the front office questioning whether he has a future with this team or whether he would be better utilized as trade bait this winter.

We have to hope that Greene and Lodolo pan out for the Reds next year.

    • Alan Horn

Mahle might be our best trade bait. But what do we want in return? A RF if Castellanous leaves. I feel comfortable with Naquin in CF. Maybe a 3b if we don’t move Farmer there. Of course we could use a couple of RP. I probably wouldn’t mess with our rotation unless Castellanous leaves. If he doesn’t leave, all we need is a RP or 2 . We have enough candidates for 3B. Farmer, Lopez and Schrock(if we sign him).

      • Alan Horn

Plus, we are probably stuck with Suarez and Moose.

      • CI3J

Any team that has 32-year old Farmer starting for them anywhere is hard to be taken seriously as a contender. He is, has been, and almost certainly always will be a below average hitter.

I would rather trade Castillo or Gray for OF help and keep Mahle, as he’s younger, cheaper, and has more years of control. Castillo especially might be able to bring a nice return as he’s also relatively young and still has electric stuff.

      • Alan Horn

The only unknown if we trade any of our starters is we don’t know if either Greene or Lodolo will be capable replacements at this point. You would be taking a gamble if you trade them before sometime during next season. They need to master AAA before they can be expected to master the major leagues.

      • CI3J

I would replace either Castillo or Gray with Santillan to begin with.

    • Alan Horn

That would leave yet another hole in the pen. Lorenzen, Givens, and Wilson are all free agents.
We are going to have our work cut out for us already with the pen.

      • CI3J

It’s much easier to replace ‘pen pieces than starting rotation pieces. All that’s required it to actually spend a few million on free agents and not go dumpster diving through other team’s rejects. Reds can start by re-signing their own free agents you listed.

Santillan’s place is in the rotation. Leaving him in the ‘pen would be criminal malfeasance.

  2. RedAlert

Only world where Naquin hits behind Suarez is David Bell’s ! This guy is unbelievable . Don’t know why I’m surprised though at ANYTHING he does …. then no hit Aquino back in left field

  3. DataDumpster

Bell’s lineup randomizer must have figured that it was Farmer’s turn to bat 5th for reasons unknown and Naquin has been too hot lately so he must be relegated to 7th. Suarez bats 6th (does it really matter anymore?) but if he gets the collar today he could slip back into the 160s. Sorry we didn’t get to know Barrero a little better and the guy that replaced him seems missing in action again.
I really like this team a lot but the only thing more irritating than trying to figure out David Bell’s decision process is the ubiquitous radio commercials of Suarez and the Moose that reminds me how pathetic their play has been over the last year or so.

  4. Mark Moore

Time for Road Warrior Mahle to show up and lead us to a Fish Squish this afternoon.

Not impressed with the choice of Geno over the other options (Schrock or Cabrerra). But maybe he swats one over the fences, so I’ll look for the positive angles.

  5. Joe P.

I’m OK with today’s lineup. I like Stephenson in the 2 hole today. Need Votto and Farmer to rake to make the rest of the lineup go. Joey please get hot again. Naquin down in the lineup not ideal but maybe Suarez will get some pitches with Naquin behind him. We can only hope Suarez puts good wood on the ball and lays off bad pitches. And maybe today is Aquino’s day?

We’ll see how it plays out. Go Reds!

    • Mark Moore

Sir Strandsalot will get pitches … most of them low and away and about 8-12 inches out of the strike zone. Every MLB pitcher has seen what he’s doing and they continue to exploit that.

  6. LDS

I thought the whole rationale for signing Cabrera was that he hit LH’er? So why Suárez yeh on doesn’tm

    • Mark Moore

Tinker forgot he’s on the team, I guess …

Either that or he called Dusty and was told “You got to get him going …”

  7. Jim Walker

Bell’s statement about Moose’s status is so Reds. Moustakas has a .644 OPS/ 70 wRC (100 being league average) since his return and clearly cannot field his position up to snuff. A replacement for him in the person of Cabrera is on the roster. Barrero is on site to fill the roster opening. But the Reds have to get a report on Moose this morning before deciding whether to IL him (which they hope they don’t)??? In the not quite 2 months he out, did not the team play .550 or better winning baseball?

    • Mark Moore

If they IL him before they leave town, can they hold on to Barrero and activate him?

      • Jim Walker

Barrero is on option. I think he can be recalled at any time to replace someone placed on the IL. The team is coming back to Cincinnati anyway and Monday is (always) an off day for Louisville this year. So, I’d think Barrero would be riding back on the team charter anyway since the Bats are at home this week.

    • CI3J

But… But…. Moose is a veteran! In Bell’s world, that trumps everything else.

  8. Jim t

I’ll like the line up just fine if we win.

    • Mark Moore

As will I … the outcome is the goal.

    • Beaufort Red

Exactly! No bit__in. Just enjoy the ride.

    • Redsvol

this would have been a good game to give Joey a break and put Cabrera in at 1st. Joey’s cooled off substantially.

  9. DataDumpster

Did we really neglect to play our shortstop of the future so that we really don’t know if he really is the shortstop of the future? Did we let this youngster down by replacing him with a rather expensive 35 year old that is apparently only good at hitting LH pitching? Did we not put this player in the lineup when a LH pitcher is starting?

    • Mark Moore

I decline to answer any of your questions because doing so would only raise my BP and incite a riot within my own head.

  10. RedsGettingBetter

I thought Cabrera would start today at 3B so he is hitting LHPs well and Suarez is doing the opposite… Hopefully the Reds RH hitters figure Luzardo out without become him a Cy Luzardo… He has 7 + ERA , man…

  11. Bet on Red

Reds cant face the same pitcher two days in a row. Certainly think that this will be a better effort then yesterday. Lets go get this and win the series. Padres beaten by the Angels last night and Brewers lost to twins. No loss in standings

  12. Dennis Westrick

Time for Maalox Mahle to toe the rubber! The Maalox is for me, not for Mahle! As for Bell’s batting order today, baffling is one word that comes to mind! Naquin is hotter than a Hawaii volcano, so, let’s bat him behind Sir Strands Alot and in front of “You Want Me to Hit the Baseball? Aquino! Maybe Bell is brilliant and we are all idiots! Need this game for the series win!

    • Mark Moore

I’ll have to bring you a bottle if we get to see a game together next month.

    • RojoB

Full Count Mahle reporting for duty.

He did something amazing last start—104 pitches in 5 and 2/3 innings.

That is hard to do friends.

      • RojoB

        42 pitches after 2 innings…he’s consistent!

Full count HR surrendered to boot

He could be so much better than this

  13. Dennis Westrick

Also, a big Thanks to the Angels last night!

  14. Mark Moore

RoY starts it off … that’s out in pretty much any other park on the planet. This one is just a cavern.

My wife just noticed he’s flaps back up today.

  15. greenmtred

you guys are so right about Bell. Just think: If a committee of RLN commenters took over the team, they’d win lots of games and wouldn’t be languishing in last place, 20 games under .500.

  16. Dennis Westrick

I have an idea! Let’s trade for the Marlins’ Alcantra much like the trade where the Reds acquired Castillo from the Marlins in 2017! That way we won’t have 23 strikeouts in 2 games over the span of 5 days!

  17. Bet on Red

THat was not even close. that should be bases loaded

    • Mark Moore

Nope. And no explanation from the Cowboy makes that big of a blown call OK.

      • Mark Moore

He’s backtracking a bit now. Saying DTB legitimately went out to “reign the umpire in” before it hurts the Reds any further.

      • jazzmanbbfan

Chris and Tommy on radio not at all happy with the umpire.

  18. Mark Moore

So the HP ump is going to mess with heads again today. All I can say is we’d better get that call when it’s our turn.

If you can’t judge the pitches, step out from behind the plate. I know he’s setting up “where he should” but 6 inches outside is a HUGE miss.

  19. Mark Moore

Today’s children’s book is titled, “Mr. Mahle Fries from Fish”

  20. Dennis Westrick

Well, that was a disappointing end of the inning after a promising start! Mahle needs to take advantage of this big ball park and pitch to contact today!

  21. Joe P.

I didn’t think Farmer had a chance to throw out Rojas. Great play.

    • Dennis Westrick

Farmer, despite his age, HAS EXCEEDED ALL EXPECTIONS!

    • Mark Moore

Same here … surprised and happy with the result.

Followed by Nick C tracking one down.

  22. Dennis Westrick

Jeezy Pete! How many more games do The Dirty Birds have against the Pie Rats?

    • Mark Moore

Not enough to make a huge difference from what I understand.

      • Dennis Westrick

Plus they have 7 games remaining against the now more than hapless Cubs!

    • CI3J

Today is the last one for the rest of the season. Then the Cards schedule gets really tough.

  23. Mark Moore

So we get robbed and then give up a gopher ball. Not a good start, guys. Not a good start at all. Really can’t lose 2 of 3 to the Fish no matter where we play them.

    • Tom Mitsoff

I’m hoping that facing a guy with a 7-plus ERA will provide more than a few chances to score some runs.

      • Mark Moore

You have to think it will

How about you, Tom. You coming to the games on the 23rd or 24th?

      • Tom Mitsoff

Hadn’t seen anything about this. Please explain. 🙂

  24. Bet on Red

Not good. Cleared my 1st inning HRE though so there is that

  25. Joe P.

It’s all about location for Mahle. Why he can’t locate better after getting the count to 0-2 (and missing on 4 straight attempts) is beyond me.

  26. Tom Mitsoff

Three fantastic defensive plays kept that inning from being like yesterday’s first inning.

    • Mark Moore

That they did. Not sure which one was the “best” as they were all very unique.

  27. RedsGettingBetter

Mahle gets 2 outs on 4 pitches and after that suddenly fell down giving 2 runs up…

    • Mark Moore

Take that away and give Jazzy Jazz an error … too bad for Tyler.

  28. Mark Moore

Again with 6 inches outside for a strike.

  29. Dennis Westrick

Mahle is definitely the most frustrating of the Reds starters! He consistently gets ahead in the count 0-2 or 1-2 then starts NIBBLNG to run the count full and then throws up a meatball.

    • Mark Moore

So very true. Nibble, nibble, nibble … BOOOOOM!!!

    • Mark Moore

Not sure if you saw my message yesterday. I reached out via LinkedIn about the games.

  30. Mark Moore

Cy Luzardo reporting to the mound

  31. RedAlert

Aquino is pitiful at the plate and Bell continues to run him out there ! No excuse for this – but Bell thinks he’s smarter than everybody else

  32. Mark Moore

    @Tom Mitsoff …

I’ve got a trip booked to go see games on the 23rd and 24th (air and hotel, haven’t bought seats yet). Dennis Westrick is also planning on the 23rd (at least).

I was thinking you were still in the area, not in Wisconsin. That’s why I asked about the games.

    • Tom Mitsoff

If I was still in the area, I’d definitely join you guys. Hope you have a great time and represent Redleg Nation well!

  33. RedAlert

Mahle won’t last 5 as usual – always pitching from behind . Man it is so frustrating watching him pitch . Throw the freaking ball over then plate man !!!!!!

  34. Mark Moore

So why isn’t that one a strike like it was on Joey or AA? It’s about the same spot.

I have to stop thinking about it and commenting … it just makes my brain hurt.

    • dhmorgan

Unless the umpire is biased toward Miami (unlikely), the Reds will be the beneficiary of some of those calls as well.
Besides, MLB has a strict anti-discrimination policy on umpires: even the legally blind are not excluded.

      • Mark Moore

So are you saying the blown calls against Joey and AA which were the same 4-6 inches off the plate and called for strikes are not bad when the same location there wasn’t called for a strike?

I’m not saying they are biased. I’m saying they are wretchedly inconsistent and not held to any accountability at all for getting better.

  35. RedAlert

Looks like he’s up there just throwing at times , not pitching

  36. Joe P.

Tyler Mahle doesn’t have an out pitch other than his rising fastball. I’d like see him develop a split-finger pitch. I think it could work for him.

    • Joe P.

I didn’t realize Mahle threw his change-up as a split-finger pitch. I’d rather he throw a split-finger sinker, something hard to make batters chase.

  37. RedAlert

This guy on mound can’t break a window payne or bust an egg – pathetic

    • RedAlert

Well after seeing him this 95/96 fastballs I take it back – but plus 9 era tells you something too

Shutup for just 30 seconds please Sadak !

      • Mark Moore

His in-depth biography of the one Fish player was beyond annoying. He’s a Reds broadcaster … why on Earth would he think we want to know that much about an opposing player?

        Just.Shut.Up.

  38. Joe P.

Luzardo is keeping the ball down and changing speeds. His movement is not great, but he’s changing speeds. We’ve got to keep trying to make him get the ball up and get the right pitch.

    • Mark Moore

Yep. We’re playing right into his hand so far.

      • Tom Mitsoff

At the moment, the hope is to at least get Luzardo’s pitch count up and get into the Miami bullpen.

  39. Mark Moore

So maybe we get 6 from Mahle today after all …

Still need Crooked Numbers to Squish the Fish. No time like the present.

  40. Jeffery Stroupe

    Need a Hal King moment…..soon

  41. Dennis Westrick

Mahle at 53 pitches thru 3 innings! Another 5 inning outing ahead, 6 if he’s lucky!

    • Mark Moore

That’s just what I was thinking

  42. Joe P.

Joey Votto has got to quit letting the count get to 2 strikes. He’s getting better pitches to hit on his first 2 strikes and then he is on his last strike. He’s putting himself behind the 8 ball.

  43. RedAlert

Suarez shouldn’t be playing at all – nice move Bell

  44. Dennis Westrick

Time to fire up the bats gentlemen! One (1) run last night and NO RUNS thru 3 innings today against another Cy Young candidate! Can’t keep relying on other teams in the NL Wild Card race to lose! Padres have a brutal schedule but the Cards have a schedule very similar to the Reds!

    • Mark Moore

And Geno obliges with yet another K

  45. Bet on Red

This guy is not pitching like a guy wit7 plus ERA. Reds pitching is keeping the deficit managable, but the hitters need to get on it with a purpose

  46. Dennis Westrick

Make that ZERO runs thru 4 innings! Pathetic! Where are you Jobu when we need you?

    • Mark Moore

Sunday afternoon nap … probably hung over from all the rum he drank last night trying to shake off that loss.

    • dhmorgan

Pardon my ignorance, just what’s a Jobu?

      • Mark Moore

From the movie “Major League” … here’s a sample:

  47. LDS

Just checking in and I see they are choking another one. And good ole Geno is hitless yet again. But then, so is everyone else except India. I’ll check back in later but watching a lousy pitcher with a 7.00+ ERA shutout the Reds, just isn’t a fun way to spend an afternoon.

  48. RedsGettingBetter

This game makes me remember the Philly Matt Moore and the last series against The Cubs…Why is that?

  49. RedAlert

Can do nothing against this bum … this is flat out pitiful !!!!

  50. Bet on Red

Going out on a limb here but I am sure jim day is not a surfer

  51. Mark Moore

I didn’t think you were allowed to bunt for a hit at this level?

  52. Mark Moore

That’s a real TOOTBLAN for him. Just a little too eager. Spoiled a good Sac Bunt.

  53. Mark Moore

The window is closing today … Mahle may have settled in, but our offense apparently caught an earlier flight out of Miami.

  54. Joe P.

Watching this offense is making me sad.

  55. RedAlert

Embarrassment in progress – getting worked by a bum with an ERA of almost 10.00 coming in

    • Tom Mitsoff

Luzardo had allowed 16 homers in 60 innings before today. I get the feeling that what’s happening is a combination of Luzardo pitching well and the Reds batters for some reason looking desperate and chasing. We’re also seeing that with a lineup full of righthanded batters, only the top three in the order are real threats to do any damage at the moment.

      • Mark Moore

A whole LOT of chasing from what I’m seeing

  56. kevinz

Playing how have played this week.
Cards will Pass up the Reds.
    Need to wake up.
Offense for most of August have been Ugly.

  57. Jeffery Stroupe

Average Reds team going through the motions. Go Reds 2022!

  58. Mark Moore

Mahle really efficient here. Maybe he at least starts the 7th. Still, we need our own Crooked Numbers.

  59. Gpod

Kind of knew Votto was gonna come back to earth …..his slump was pretty expected

    • Tom Mitsoff

And unfortunately put Farmer in the same boat.

  60. Mark Moore

And he’s nibbled his way back to yet another full count.

  61. RedAlert

Can’t lose series to sorry teams like this with so few to go …. just can’t do it

I’ll give credit to Mahle – bounced back and pitched well – getting absolutely zero help from this pathetic offense

    • Mark Moore

We’re not seeing the “next man up” today

  62. Mark Moore

And we benefit from the cavern that is LoadDepot Park (finally)

  63. Tom Mitsoff

Nice to see a pitching change — let’s see if the bullpen can do as well as Luzardo over the final three innings.

  64. Tom Mitsoff

I’m looking for Schrock to hit this inning for Farmer or Suarez.

  65. Jeffery Stroupe

Kinda like over analysis of the 1971 Reds

  66. Indy Red Man

Yeah we have to get Farmer in there so he can never walk and hit into a doubleplay every single day as well.

  67. Mark Moore

Maybe … but hey, at least there’s nobody for Sir Strandsalot to leave on base.

Losing hope here, friends. We can’t even catch a break on a close play at 1st.

  68. RedAlert

Farmer back to earth – struggling

  69. Old Big Ed

Farmer is older and slower today than he was yesterday. Gonna be true tomorrow, too.

    • Tom Mitsoff

I have no interest in watching Farmer pop up and ground out all the time, even though he is playing good defense. Barrero passes the eye test as a better athlete and defender. If Farmer is going to be an automatic out, see if Barrero can do better.

      • RedAlert

Totally agree with this Tom ! Spot on !

  70. Mark Moore

Toss Bell now and get the boys fired up!

  71. Bet on Red

Suarez ejected. HP umps feelings hurt. David bell might not last the break

  72. LGR

Get Suarez out of here. Sick of seeing him and Aquino hit.

    • Arthur

One should not use the word “hit” in the same sentence with Suarez or Aquino.

      • Maloney63

Exactly! ATTEMPT to hit would be better! If Aquino comes to ST next year and still can’t make contact it’ll be time to cut him loose! Not sure what to heck to do with Suarez. Cut him loose and eat all that contract money???

  73. DataDumpster

I don’t know if any other team can catch the Reds for the WC but it has escaped my notice that almost all the “gains” in the Reds position has been due to a complete collapse of the Padres (winning just 3 of the last 13). The Reds are 6-6 in the last 12 with an average 3.33 runs per game.
Suarez got tossed, the only good thing to happen this game. Hopefully, Bell’s arguing will get him tossed also.

    • DataDumpster

Max replaces Suarez. I guess Bell had no other choice than to bring in a better player.

      • Joe P.

I’m not sure why he didn’t put Cabrera in at 3rd and save Schrock to pinch-hit in the pitcher’s spot.

    • Mark Moore

Right. But the way we’re playing right now tells the tale of how we’d do in Game 163 for a ticket to a post-season series. And the tale I’m seeing doesn’t inspire a lot of confidence knowing it would be in SF or Chavez Ravine.

      • Maloney63

True that! ANY lefty ANY team throws out there right now automatically shuts the Reds down. If it’s in LA or SF it’s probably a no-hitter. Heck, it’s darn close to a no-hitter today against probably the worst starting pitcher in MLB!

  74. Joe P.

What Suarez did was no worse than a few of the other batters on both teams. I guess the ump finally had enough.

And Suarez almost picked off Aquino with the throw of the bat.

    • Mark Moore

I agree. The difference between him jawing about it and Joey in the first inning is that Sir Strandsalot hasn’t hit much at all this season. To that extent, maybe he hasn’t earned the right to jaw at the ump about the zone.

    • Alan Horn

Good way to get someone on the IL to clear a roster space.

  75. RedAlert

Never really gave Barrero chance – but then again they never do .

These dudes look like they could care less today . Started with the screwed up lineup ……

  76. vared

Really missing a healthy Winker about now.

  77. Mark Moore

That was nice of Mahle to issue a lead-off walk so Sims doesn’t have to do it.

  78. RedAlert

Aquino should be nothing but a piece off the bench – guy can’t hit at all , just like Shogo

    • Alan Horn

Not sure either should be even that. They both have been given plenty of chances.

  79. Tim

Aquino’s MLB hot start is becoming a distant memory. Not a very good swing. Too many empty ABs. Need Winker asap.

    • Joe P.

With the way Aquino stands at the plate, he can’t hit the pitch away. His stance is too open and he never closes up enough. That front foot needs to go more towards first base than it does.

  80. RedAlert

Ain’t happening today …. shut out by sorry Marlins

    Pitiful effort , just pitiful

  81. LGR

Like.. they were giving Barrero reps in the outfield right? As much as I hate that, he should be playing on this team with Winker our SOMEWHERE.

  82. Joe P.

Not sure why Cabrera didn’t go into the game for Suarez instead if Schrock. That way Schrock is the pinch-hitter for the pitcher and not Cabrera. Now (absent a Reds rally), Schrock won’t get an at bat.

    • J

My hunch is it has something (by which I mean everything) to do with Cabrera being a switch-hitter. Bell can’t seem to think about anything other than what hand a guy throws or hits with. He’s not really into the whole “stats” thing.

  83. Old Big Ed

    Release Asdrubal Cabrera.

    Quit playing old, slow guys.

    • Alan Horn

I agree. We should be going with young guys. Almost guaranteed better offense and defense plus we get a read on next season. If Suarez, Moose and Cabrera(all season) aren’t performing by now then their fire has flickered almost out. They appear to be done. Don’t tell me we are in a pennant race. You have to think better offense and defense would be better for the pennant race. Suarez made a great play today. It is his hitting that is a zero. Our problem isn’t in the drafting and development. It is somewhere from the manager to ownership. It may be multiple places in that range. Our hitting and pitching coaches also appear productive. The pen’s problems all season was due to a lack of talent and injuries. Not coaching. Our problem seems to be getting the right people on the field in the right positions, which is a major part of coaching/managing in any sport.

  84. Mark Moore

Last call, friends … and we have to get through the Fish 8 before that even.

  85. Tim

This day in history…Sims didn’t issue a leadoff walk.

    • Mark Moore

I was thinking that exact same thing

  86. Doc4uk

Aquino needs to be cut He has had three seasons to show something. Play Barrero at SS and platoon Shreck and Farmer at third. Bring up Inciarte until Winker returns

    • RedAlert

That makes too much common sense for this manager and front office Doc – but I
      totally agree with you !

  87. Redsgettingbetter

Cabrera pinchhitting against RHP… What a he…is this? And… Where is Shrock? Or Barnhart just in case? I do not understand anything

    • Mark Moore

Schrock already in the game I believe.

  88. Mark Moore

And he eats it rather than throw it away.

At least that’s a productive AB for Nick. Time for Joey to wake up Jobu and find his wallet.

  89. Bet on Red

    alright, things are getting interesting

  90. Mark Moore

Well, the shut-out is gone … need somebody to hit green here.

  91. Mark Moore

A few innings to late for DTB to get fired up and get tossed.

    • RedAlert

And these umps have sucked all year long Behind the plate – zero accountability !

  92. RedAlert

Got what they deserved – Farmer going backwards

Glad they gave Barrero such a great opportunity

  93. Old Big Ed

    The Gritty Farmer fans.

There being no possibility of another double play.

  94. LDS

Hard to take the Reds seriously following this weekends performance. At the rate things are going, St. Louis is going to catch them.

    • TR

A key to the playoffs. 6 games left with St. L.

  95. Slicc50

man….this offense is sooo top heavy. If a few guys aren’t carrying the offense, there is NO offense. Shame to lose this one

  96. LGR

Woulda been nice to have Schrock pinch hit there for Farmer, but alas. Tucker would have also been cool.

  97. Joe P.

Bell mismanaged the substitution for Suarez. That should have been Cabrera at 3B. Schrock should have been held back to pinch-hit for Mahle. Schrock didn’t even get an at bat and he’s clearly a better hitter than Cabrera right now.

Also, where’s all the people who wanted to play the Marlins every game?

  98. LGR

Oh well. 5-2 against the Marlins is still.. good. The bigger series starts tomorrow against the Cardinals. Gotta get it done there. Not sure why Berrero gets sent down with 3 straight lefty starters due up, but you know, the Reds organization is pretty questionable.

  99. RedAlert

Bell still has no clue how to put his best lineup in the field – HE NEVER DOES !!!!

Aquino , Suarez don’t need to start period ; neither does Shogo; get Schrock in the lineup somewhere; get Stephenson’s bat in the lineup more

I that so hard Bell !!! Stop it with the Little League participation rules !!!! You ain’t got time for that crap any more !!!!

    • RedAlert

I’ll add that Barrero needs to be at shortstop as well … front office was stupid to have sent him down

  100. DataDumpster

Ball of confusion. Listening to the radio, all I heard the last two innings was that most every Reds hitter and Bell of course getting irate about the B&S. This seems to be a hallmark of this team since Bell arrived. Are the umps really that bad? Are they maybe a little biased against the Reds because of the team’s past behavior?
Whatever happened to the Little League lessons like “protect the plate”, “be aggressive”, “the bat is not made to rest on your shoulder”, etc. I didn’t see this game on TV so I can’t evaluate how bad the calls were but I would guess it is more about attitude and lack of leadership than anything else. The announcers didn’t have any opinion about the quality of the calls after the game but noted that it becomes an unwanted distraction that never helps the cause.

  101. RedAlert

Cards just got walked off bottom 9 on a 3 run homer ! LOL couldn’t happen to a nicer bunch !

Led 3-1 going into bottom 9 – Thank you
    Pirates !

  102. BatsLeftThrowsRight

Aquino and Garrett need to be released, neither do anything productive for this team. Stop the lefty right bs and just play guys capable of hitting over .200.

Aquino is becoming worse than Suarez, his pitiful plate coverage and inability to make any adjustments is glaring. He had one great month in the majors, pitchers have adjusted now and Aquino refuses to adjust. Stop running this guy out there, it’s beyond ridiculous at this point, it’s embarrassing. .
