The Cincinnati Reds welcome in the new but not likely improved Chicago Cubs to Great American Ball Park on Monday to start up a new series. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10pm.

Starting Pitchers

Wade Miley

With a 3.00 ERA in 21 starts this season, Wade Miley has been the best starter the Cincinnati Reds have had this season. Tonight will be the 4th time that Miley has faced the Cubs. In his first two he allowed two runs in each, one that went 5.0 innings and the other that went 6.2, but on July 26th he allowed three while walking five batters and giving up seven hits in just 4.2 innings. That was against a very different Cubs lineup than the one he’ll face tonight.

Wade Miley doesn’t face many lefties and for good reason. The ones deemed good enough to remain in the lineup against him have hit .200/.255/.253 on the season in 103 plate appearances. Righties have found more success, though they still haven’t been good, posting a .251/.313/.392 line against him. From an ERA standpoint, Miley’s pitched better at home (2.56 to 3.39), but hitters have a higher OPS in Cincinnati against him (.690 to .643).

Justin Steele

The 26-year-old lefty will be making just his second big league start tonight. He’s made 11 appearances for the Cubs out of the bullpen this year and thrown just a total of 18.1 innings for Chicago. He’s posted a 2.95 ERA and struck out 22 batters with eight walks in that span. He has faced Cincinnati twice this year – both times out of the bullpen, and they’ve scored four runs against him in 3.0 innings. Both games came in the same series at the end of April/beginning of May.

Steele was injured and missed almost all of June before heading to Triple-A where he made four relief appearances and then moved into the rotation and made five starts before being called up last week to start against Milwaukee. It’s tough to put much into his splits because the sample size is so small, but lefties are just 2-22 against him this year with a home run. Righties are 10-45 (.222) but are slugging .467 against him with half of those 10 hits allowed being extra-base hits.

News and Notes

Jose Barrero called up, Jesse Winker to the IL

The Cincinnati Reds made a set of roster moves today. Jesse Winker’s been placed on the injured list with an intercostal strain. Shortstop Jose Barrero has been called up to take his spot on the 26-man roster. We’ve got quotes from David Bell on Barrero here, who apparently will be coming off of the bench.

Over at RedsMinorLeagues.com I did more of a deep dive on Jose Barrero’s 2021 season, the changes he’s made, and what we could expect *if* he were given enough playing time.

Curious why Barnhart, a lefty, is starting over Stephenson? Is Tucker Miley’s preferred catcher?

  2. Klugo

My goodness, I think the Cubs are looking worse that the Pirates now. Gotta make hay.

  3. scotly50

Suarez in the line-up. I think he has something on Bell. Only think I can come up with.

    • LDS

It’s the Bell way. And Farmer who has been acknowledged as “slumping” is batting cleanup. The Reds need to sweep the Cubs. Anything less is a failure.

    • Melvin

Batting 5th as well. lol Well let’s just win tonight regardless and have fun. I will say that Suarez reminds me of what we’ve all seen. A Little Leaguer playing nearly every game, playing sometimes in positions he has no business playing, batting higher in the order than he ought to, all because his dad is the coach. lol I don’t know what’s going on but it’s weird to me. Anyway, Let’s Go!

      • DataDumpster

An accurate dose of reality with a salty bite on the end. Love it and on point.

  4. Bet on Red

Left an anonymous tip to the FBI to a series of Murders that Is going to take place in Cincinnati this week. If Miley gets a good start in we should have this. This has the potential of being a 6 or 7 game win streak in the offing

  5. steven ross

Bell rolls out some head-scratching lineups sometimes. Maybe it’ll work out? He’s going to run with Suarez the rest of season even though it’s doubtful he gets the average over .180.

    • beelicker

his last 15 games = .179/.27o/.446 … which absorbs a .12o/.214/.32o slump of the last 7 of that dragging it down … supposedly he was making positive adjustments but just when you think he might be turning a corner, he finds another to walk into

    • beelicker

      He hasn’t much since 2o19 … .276/.343/.534

      last season in 5o PA .. .214/.298/.357

      2o21 in a measly 26 PA .. .o91/.25o/.136

1 for 18 total vs either side since the 3 hit debut vs Pirate batting practice pitching, plus the 2nd day when the rest of the team got 14 hits against the same, he walked twice with o hits … not found his stroke or eye yet, probably taking plenty of BP though … in his case right now, what you see currently is what you get …. until it isn’t

  6. Dennis Westrick

IT’S TIME! Yes, gents it’s time to focus on winning tonight and every game in the next 2 series. No more everybody needs to play, one RP per inning nonsense and no more participation trophies! It is essential that the Reds trim 1 or 2 games off of the Brewers lead in the NL Central before we play them next Tuesday! As much as it pains me will be rooting for the Dirty Birds in their series with the Brewers starting tomorrow. Losses at this point of the season are hard to make up. Go Reds! Put the Cubs into hibernation!

  7. Indy Red Man

SD is rolling out rookie Ryan Weathers again tonight. They’ve lost 7 of his last 8 starts and the last 3 have all been short of 5 innings with atleast 6+ er (11.2 innings total with 20 earned runs). They just signed Jake Arrieta with his 6.88 era and he’s supposed to start on Wednesday.

Maybe the Reds front office isn’t that crazy after all.

    • Roger Garrett

Nope cause SD is in a world of hurt as far as starting pitching depth is concerned and thats our strength. They just put Darvish on the IL and Snell has been just awful and they just need somebody or anybody to get them to the 5th and keep it close. We have 6 of those guys and 8 if you throw in Greene and Lodolo.Hope our front office realizes where SD is and thats it time to make a move? Don’t think so.Memo to Reds front office-SD still running out Weathers who hit the wall weeks ago and just picked up Arrieta who was released by the Cubs who have lost 11 in a row and got hammered most of those games yet didn’t keep him.

      • Scotly50

St Louis is just as close to us as we are to San Diego.

  8. Eddie Prindle

I love the young shortstop call up Barreor I believe you spell his last name young 22 old who played shortstop last year for us. I read senzel and reds could look a divorce this off season because he still in minors and was not in last night lineup while on a hitting streak. It be interesting to see what happens from this point to 2022 regular season.

    • RedAlert

Farmer no business batting cleanup – none

      • RedAlert

And Suarez no business in the lineup period – and Bell moved him back up to fifth …LOL what a complete joke

        Pathetic

      • beelicker

favor the righties before the lefties vs LHP is valid, Farmer is more valid than Saurez, who gets the veteran nod over Aquino … who else would you put there out of these guys? .. i guess you coulda put Farmer at #2 and moved lefty Vottto to cleanup, but that’s just shuffling deck chairs

      • DataDumpster

At least Bell hasn’t restarted the Suarez leadoff experiment even though it gave him probably his best 10 game stint (and no more) of this year.

      • Melvin

“At least Bell hasn’t restarted the Suarez leadoff experiment even though it gave him probably his best 10 game stint (and no more) of this year”.

That’s one of the many reasons I think, that if he is going to play (even though he shouldn’t) he should hit 9th.

  9. Indy Red Man

Farmer has 1 walk in August. He’s swinging at a ton of pitches out of the zone. He needs some time off!

    • DataDumpster

He and India deserve some time off, the two nutcrackers on this team who need to stay healthy. Love to see the 4-5X a week Farmer playing around the horn and a steady diet of Barerro time at short. There are now alternatives to the sunken cost infield in the purpose of winning!

    • Jefferson Green

And he just emphasized your point.

  10. Mark A Verticchio

This is not a good line up, Miley better be on.

  11. Bet on Red

Suarez looks at strike three straight down the middle. Cant use the soft-tossing lefty excuse, this is a hard-throwing lefty. Berros better be getting some of suarezs starts as well

  12. Mark A Verticchio

Barreros and Stephenson should be in the line up, I an sure Stephenson can catch Miley, need bats.

  13. bug

Nick and Suarez takes strikes right down the middle with men on base. And you wonder why we can’t beat southpaws. Pitiful!!! Both of them should be benched. Reds are going nowhere with players that are too afraid to swing. Nick swings at two in the dirt, then takes a perfect strike right down the heart of the plate. We need to bench some players.

    • jazzmanbbfan

So you’re going to bench the guy hitting.325 with an OPS over .900 and put in who?

  14. Roger Garrett

Reds will be ok.These guys bust their butts and play for each other. They know its them against the other team and their own leadership every game.

    • Mark Moore

That is very true. No way you can fault their dedication to each other. But there are certain elements that still leave room for a second guess or two.

  15. Mark Moore

Pretty sure Barrero could have done something other than look at strike 3. But we don’t want to upset the “chemistry” so he’ll languish on the bench (or so Tinker says in so many words).

Beat the Stupid Cubs and much will be forgotten. Hoping Wade is really The Hulk tonight.

  16. Mark Moore

OK everybody, whenever Sadak says “symmetry” we each take a shot … who’s in?

    • Mark Moore

I figure we could all be plastered by the 4th or 5th inning.

    • DataDumpster

or when Sadak calls out “another shot to dee..eep center” and lowers his voice for inflection.

  17. Votto4life

I wonder if David Bell is even aware how many runners Suarez has left on base this season?

  18. Indy Red Man

This Steele kid has a live arm so just make him work. This Cubs lineup shouldn’t score much.

  19. Bet on Red

Looks like the Run on bunt contact there…. had to try something I suppose

  20. RedAlert

    “Blue Steele “

    Can somebody shut Sadak up
    Chatterbox man

    • Old-school

Ive had the Reds TV broadcast on mute for about a week. It’s not bad.

    • Beaufort Red

Most annoying play by play in along time. Can’t shut up . I think his stats drive all his color commentators crazy.

    • Benchedfan

Thank you, I’ve been muting Reds games for about a month now. I just can’t take all that chatter. It’s like he’s still on radio and has to fill every second of the game. Very annoying.

  21. Old-school

Joel Luckhaupt is a statistician and Reds informaticist and pretty objective guy.

Check out his twitter on Geno Suarez. He’s played 36 of the last 39 games. He’s not figuring it out. It’s the same historically awful broken record.

  22. beelicker

Barnhart actually doesn’t suck vs LHP .25o/.279/.375 in 47 PA before that double

    • Doug Gray

Are you trying to make the argument that a .654 OPS doesn’t suck?

      • beelicker

lol no … i mean, comparatively, for himself vs RHP .267/.343/.4o9

and he did just sock a double!

  23. Mark A Verticchio

Wasted inning, no idea what Miley was doing.

  24. Indy Red Man

I swear? Miley never inverted his bat to bunt it towards a base? Just drop it right in front of the pitcher isn’t going to work? He can swing it a little….just let him swing away!

  25. Roger Garrett

Yeah what happened?I would think Wade could put the ball in play.

  26. Mark A Verticchio

I agree let him hit, if you going to bunt= suicide

  27. Roger Garrett

I know Miley knows you can’t walk the 8 hole hitter who is at 188 but come on man.

  28. beelicker

Even Castellanos, against type, somewhat underperforms vs LHP

    .29o/.347/.516

    .324/.383/.579 vs LHP

the Red Kryptonite effect (Red causes Superman to have radical personality glitches)

    • beelicker

oops sorry, the second, better split is vs RHP

  29. Bet on Red

Nick with the Hustle, The bat dies a hero, Votto gets a hit…. we are in buisness

    • Mark Moore

Got to love Nick’s hustle. Got him to third as well.

  30. Mark Moore

He ripped that so hard even the second base bag couldn’t get out of his way.

  31. TyGuy88

There is absolutely zero reason for Farmer or Suarez (Farmer at 3rd) to be playing ahead of Barrero.

    • RedAlert

Except for in David Bell’s world …..

Totally agree … To magically think Suarez gonna do anything different than what he has already demonstrated is crazy

2 pitiful ABs by both of them back to back

      • RojoB

Magical thinking is what toddlers do

  32. dhmorgan

Three innings. Six men left on base.
    Come on guys!

  33. Slicc50

So far Geno up 2 times with chance to drive in run………..2 K’s

  34. Roger Garrett

How awful can a major league team be that can’t even put a ball in play to get a run home.

    • jazzmanbbfan

At last glance the score was 11-0. Guess they can after all.

  35. Indy Red Man

Sir Strandsalot…..worst season I’ve ever seen by anyone

    • RedAlert

      Yes indeed – BRUTAL

Wouldn’t be staring on any other MLB team managed by somebody with
      common sense

  36. Bet on Red

Unbelievable. Suarez caught looking again…. farmer chasing a foot out the zone. Aquino got it in play. The irony is that would have scored a run if there wasn’t 2 outs. The farmer cleanup experiment gets a pass as long as it isn’t repeated tomorrow, but Aquino should never bat below Suarez again.

      • Indy Red Man

Barely behind SS…..that wasn’t scoring a run either. I’m losing my faith in AA

  37. Mark A Verticchio

That was awful, Farmer,Suarez and Aqiuno this game is looking like trouble. Bell’s line up construction was horrible and it is showing.

  38. Mark Moore

Sir Strandsalot in full swing tonight! 4 total so far and half way to adding to his collection of Golden Sombreros.

I found myself wishing he would argue with the HP ump and get ejected so we’d see Barrero or at least Moose.

    • Benchedfan

I was hoping Bell would get tossed early to help the pitching decisions later in the game.

  39. Mark A Verticchio

    Nice to hear Sam’s voice.

    • Mark Moore

Agreed. Plus it usually means Sadak talks a LOT less.

  40. Mark Moore

I’m thinking that was the absolute limit of Kyle Farmer’s throwing range.

  41. Jefferson Green

Wow. Great play by Farmer. Wow.

  42. Roger Garrett

I am with you Mark. How on earth can this guy even cash his check. Please please if Suarez has to play let him hit 8th or 9th.

  43. Mark A Verticchio

Nice play by Farmer, but did any body notice that Suarez never budged.

  44. Gonzo Reds

MM what inning and what number beer? I drink whenever Bell makes a boneheaded move.

    • Mark Moore

You’d be better off starting pre-emptively drunk at that point (most nights)

    • RojoB

Better call 911 now you’re going to have alcohol poisoning Bro

  45. Indy Red Man

They need to run Moose out there vs lefties too. See if he can get it going? Geno has had a million chances

    • RojoB

Cannot do worse and that is putting it lightly

    • Old-school

Moose needs to be optioned to Reds Fantasy Camp in Goodyear. He’s gained 25 pounds and looks like an ex player and runs like one. Maybe the Reds could have Goodyear Fantasy camp 40 weeks a year with Suarez and Moose managing both teams. I mean I’d sign up for that. Camp Moose?

  46. Mark Moore

Bottom third means Lefty, Lefty, Lefty … hoping something happens like last time around (but without the suicidal squeeze).

  47. Indy Red Man

The thing is with Geno too is that he never makes a productive out. Never shorten up with 2 strikes and try to make contact. Sac fly or groundball. Even with bases loaded nobody out its guaranteed to be a K or a popup

    • Mark Moore

We’re 75% through the season. The league knows what he’ll do with a high degree of accuracy. And they exploit it at every turn, usually to their advantage.

  48. Bet on Red

India says ENOUGH OF THE TOMFOLLERY

    • beelicker

lefty 94 mph 4-seam fastball on 2-2 right straight down the pike to a righty batter … somebody messed up there!

  49. Mark A Verticchio

Thank you India we needed that, bad.

  50. Mark Moore

    Upper Deck AGAIN!!!!

I will agree the decision to bat RoY India at the top certainly has paid huge dividends. His confidence continues to soar.

  51. AllTheHype

Geno has +32 lead in MLB on LOB, more than 10% in front of 2nd place. That’s more of a knock on Bell than it is Suarez. No other MLB manager would give such a pathetic offensive performer so many starts in the middle of a lineup.

  52. Indy Red Man

Naquin having a great August! Worked a leadoff walk to get to India there!

  53. JB

People are saying Winker ,Votto or Castellanos as team MVP , but where would this team be without India.

    • Votto4life

Was thinking the same thing…should have an exciting middle infield for years to come.

  54. Arthur

I know we all hope Aquino is gonna come around at some point, but honestly, how much difference is there between Aquino and Suarez?? Lefties eat them for lunch. In another day or two, Aquino is gonna be below .200 as well.

Yea, he’s younger, and he is better than average on defense, but …. offensively, he hasn’t been much help. He and Suarez together – just ain’t working.

    • Indy Red Man

Their SS make a great play to get Aquino on his first at-bat. Atleast he will hit the ball where its pitched unlike Geno. He’s being outplayed by Naquin and Shogo right now though.

    • Jefferson

Aquino wRC+ versus lefties is 124. Mimics his career number. He’s a much better option than Geno versus lefties.

    • Melvin

I’m very confident in saying that if you give AA the same amount of PA as Suarez has so far that he would have at least 30 HR and at least hitting .240 – .250. Very confident. He just needs to play and get confidence he’s going to play. Bell generally finds reasons to not play him rather than the other way around.

  55. VaRedsFan

    Chuck Norris wants India’s autograph

  56. Arthur

On a more positive note, Miley is being pretty pitch-efficient tonight. It would be good to see him throw 7 or maybe even 8 tonight. Give the bullpen a rest after they logged a lot of pitches yesterday.

    • Mark Moore

If it goes that long. Raining pretty hard at the moment based on that last camera view. Good thing Miley worked quickly and we’re an official game now.

  57. Jefferson Green

Wow. Farmer swinging at lots way out of the zone. Ouch.

  58. Indy Red Man

Thats why you can’t give up on the Punisher! He’s got every tool but average.

  59. Melvin

Thank you AA. As a big fan of yours I needed that. 🙂

  60. Mark Moore

That plays. And we’re up 4 zip and it’s an official game.

  61. Indy Red Man

I took Over 8.5. I figured the Cubs would scratch out atleast 2-3 runs. Maybe we really tear up their pen?

    • Bet on Red

took the under at 9.5, HRE at 28.5 Under. A hit every inning bet and a bet on Indias performance that he will meet with another single

      • Indy Red Man

I think you’re good. I have a Reds/Rockies parlay so it might work out pretty well? I think you could just RL the Cubs and O’s every night and win much more often then not

  62. JB

I’m not big on Aquino but I would like to see more of him. That was a great at bat. 0-2 count and the next pitch down and away and he fouls it off. He didnt take a big swing , just followed it off to stay alive. Next pitch down and away and he takes it. Next pitch fastball and gone. When he gets a fast ball, he knows what to do with it. He is adjusting. Not like Suarez.

    • Arthur

Yes, it was a good AB. And I hope you are correct that he continues to make adjustments, because the pitchers are sure gonna find ways to get him out. I am willing to cut him a little slack because of his prodigious power potential, and the fact that he isn’t a statue in the field.

But think how good he could be if he learned to shorten his swing with 2 strikes and just put the ball in play??? He’s strong enough to hit some balls out even doing that, and his average and RBI total would increase.

I’d rather see him hit 1/3 fewer HRs and hit .260 or .270 than down around the Mendoza line. And I bet he would drive in more runs that way as well. Because on this team, there are frequently guys on base.

      • Melvin

I would agree. I think if he got to play an entire season he would get more comfortable and learn to adjust more. As it is right now it seems every AB he has to prove something. Very hard to get comfortable that way.

  63. beelicker

Our own crafty soft tossing lefty junkerballer at an efficent 73 pitches to be facing the 4-5-6 in the 7th, drawing a bead on a bottom of the order 8th, giving the taxed from yesterday bullpen a nice break … Baseball Reference grades Miley a 5.3 WAR

    • beelicker

No such thing as a jinx here, right?

  64. Roger Garrett

AA hasn’t reached 400 at bats in the majors.Way way to early to say he can’t or that he can.Power, can run and can throw and as you said that was a really good at bat that he turned in to 2 runs.Only 27 I think so lets wait a little.

  65. Joey

    Sean Casey = Legend

Did you guys hear him on the broadcast? Talking about being traded for a.good pitcher Mike Williams aww no he’s terrible! Hahahaha I don’t know if The Mayor had a few to drink in him but that was awesome!

  66. Mark A Verticchio

Get the bull pen up asap.

  67. Mark A Verticchio

I am hoping can get through 7.

    • beelicker

at 94 pitches to be facing the #8 hitter now

  68. Indy Red Man

Heyward. He’s their Suarez/Moose. Makes too much to trade away

  69. Bet on Red

Great Job by Miley…. now assuming he is not coming out for the eighth just pick 2 from the good crowd. No HH Doolittle experiments.

    • Indy Red Man

Justin Wilson hasn’t pitched in 6 days I think. Thats my bet

  70. Indy Red Man

Nick NL batting title and India ROY!!

  71. Arthur

Miley probably didn’t have his best stuff, and he gave us 7 shutout innings. He’s a battler.

Management would be absolutely insane to not pick up his option for next season. You have to keep guys who do what Miley does every fifth day.

So, where do you think he’s gonna pitch next April??

    • Mark Moore

GABP for about half his games is my bet.

    • Indy Red Man

I would pay Miley and try to trade Gray.

      • Old-school

Gray has pitched 5 innings or less in12/18 starts

        Absolutely trade gray

  72. Mark Moore

I’m about to tear up … what a night for Joey. What a SEASON for Joey.

    • Mark Moore

Very close. We’ll take the 2 bagger with no outs.

  73. RedsMonk65

    How does Farmer do it?

I know we all want to see Barrero, but still ….

    • dhmorgan

True. He isn’t mashing like he was last month, but he still manages to get at least one hit a game.

    • Melvin

We want to see Barrero @ SS and Farmer @ 3B. Nothing wrong with that wouldn’t you agree? 🙂

      • Mark Moore

+500 for that action. I’ll put in a call to Tinker and get it all set up.

  74. Mark Moore

Chance for Sir Strandsalot to add to his total or break the curse (for tonight).

  75. Indy Red Man

I think my Over hits this inning. Cubs leaving this guy in to take one for the team….hopefully

    • Melvin

Ever pitcher who walks Suarez ought to have to run at least 10 laps around the stadium….per walk. lol

      • Mark Moore

+100 and some bad gym class memories

    • Mark Moore

Anything less than a run on a nice Sac Fly is a complete failure here.

    • beelicker

      Colorado 3, Rocks 1 … bottom 3rd, 1 out man on 2nd

  76. Indy Red Man

3-1 Rockies. I got them at +117 tonite

  77. Mark Moore

    Oh, and BoR … regarding Joey’s 2,000th hit …

    But … but … but … but …

  78. JB

Rockies just went up 3-1 on Padres. Dont sleep on the Rockies at home . I think they are 38-21.

  79. JB

Walk in a run. I thought the Reds bullpen only did that.

  80. Melvin

That BB to AA was in respect to his last AB. There is an intimidation factor with Aquino as well.

    • Arthur

      He’s a big man.

My grandmother would say he must have gotten most of the meat with his taters when he was growing up.

  81. Bet on Red

Cubs bullpen out here collapsing faster than the Afghan National Army

  82. Mark Moore

I guess we all know who Jim Day interviews tonight.

  83. Bet on Red

Its just been announced. Reds cubs to play field of dream game in 2022

  84. Mark Moore

Sadak just asked a pretty awkward question of Larkin. Larkin answering pretty humbly. And then interrupted by the catcher getting hit.

    • Mark Moore

I want to go … and I was just in Iowa a little over a month ago and hated getting there and back from Raleigh.

    • Bet on Red

yea saw the cinci enquirer article

  85. VaRedsFan

Tucker is always whacking the catcher in the head

  86. Mark Moore

Welcome back to GABP Jose Barrero.

  87. Indy Red Man

Cmon Jose!!! We didn’t tag from 2nd to 3rd((( I need 1 more run

      • Indy Red Man

Taking unders with this Cubs staff is scary. They just gave up an 11 run 2nd inning to a bad team in a pitchers park

      • Bet on Red

yea I think this is the last time I do an under with the cubs.

    • Bet on Red

and leading by 8 we all know who is coming in to pitch

      • beelicker

Interesting AB … 1st pitch *barely* touched the top of the strike zone and called a strike. 2nd barely touched low & away and fouled off. Nothing else even came close and all curves and cutters, no fastballs … welcome to the bigs, rook lol

    • RedsMonk65

Nice at bat. Continues the onslaught.

  88. JB

That’s not the same guy who was here last year. Awesome at bat there.

  89. Melvin

I can say with confidence that Barrero will be good. I like him.

  90. Bet on Red

And there goes the under. Great Job India

    • Mark Moore

Silly man … you knew who was playing and where tonight 🙂

  91. MCT

Atta boy, Jose! I’m glad Bell let him play some.

  92. Melvin

India, Aquino, and Barrero in on that play. Three young stars of the future?

  93. JB

That might be enough runs to let Garrett,Hembree and Doolittle pitch.

  94. Mark Moore

This is beyond a murder BoR … it’s a MASSACRE!!!!

    • Bet on Red

The FBI showed up turned around and said it was nothing they could do.

      • Mark Moore

Figured they’d all in the CIA because it must have been an alien invasion to do that much damage.

  95. Indy Red Man

That was intense atbat by Jose, but he didn’t chase. Impressive and I don’t think we have anyone scoring that easily from 1st on that ball

    • Mark Moore

      +500

Thought the exact same thing. The Barrero we saw last season would have gone down on strikes without a battle.

    • JB

India. He graded out yesterday as an elite runner on the play he slid into home.

  96. Mark Moore

Time for Joey to start the next chapter with #2,001

  97. Mark Moore

Got to feel some empathy for Jewell having to face Joey here.

  98. Roger Garrett

Just let the young guys play please.

  99. Votto4life

Reds and Cubs will play in the Field of Dream game next year.

  100. Roger Garrett

Indy and Mark warming in the Reds pen.

    • Mark Moore

I think I could manage 3 batters at this point.

      • Roger Garrett

Lefty or righty so we can match up in the 8th.Couldn’t help myself?

  101. RedsMonk65

Best inning the Reds have produced at the plate this year so far. Eight runs (and counting) this inning. And NO home runs!

  102. Indy Red Man

Cubs broadcast said this is the 5th time in 7 games they’ve given up a 5+ inning. They’re the worst team in mlb now.

    • Melvin

I truly believe we should shoot for sweeping them and the Pirates the rest of the year. I think we can.

  103. Mark Moore

My wife was asking about a mercy rule. I told her that wasn’t a thing here. I’m betting the Stupid Cubs would want it right about now.

    • RedsMonk65

Seven times, according to C. Trent (I didn’t know that — I just happened to look at his Twitter feed before seeing your post).

  104. Votto4life

Rockies are beating the Padres 5-1 after the 5th inning.

  105. Dennis Westrick

    Good News! It’s Doolittle Time!

  106. SOQ

This game’s going to go another 2 hours

  107. RedsMonk65

Is a 12-run lead safe with Hembree on the mound?

  108. Eddie

Wow hembree need to be cut three straight hits come on dude.

    • RedAlert

He can catch the same bus out of town as Doolittle …

  109. AllTheHype

This part of the roster (Hembree, et al) is better than Senzel, according to Bell.

    • beelicker

Bell isn’t the one pulling the personnel strings

      • AllTheHype

Right there, I meant Krall. That was his statement.

  110. Roger Garrett

Will we really have to use 3 or 4 guys out of the pen up 12-0 in the 8th?Good grief.

    • Eddie

How hembree pitching seems it unfortunately this is annoying. I wish we had let him and Doolittle bc both do very lil for this team. John and most broadcaster defend hembree and Doolittle which is annoying

  111. MCT

Get rid of Hembree and Doolittle, bring up Santillan and Senzel. I feel like the team is instantly better that way.

  112. Arthur

Everyone has a role to play.

Apparently, this guy’s role is to take a 12 run lead and make it interesting.

    • Dennis Westrick

I could do that and I have a torn rotator cuff!

    • Roger Garrett

Now thats funny but we had Big Sal for that and well I thought he did a good job in these type of games.

  113. Jonathan Linn

how did the 7th inning end with Stephenson at the plate?

    • Mark Moore

It didn’t in the version of the game I’m watching. Joey got another single and TySteve was put in to pinch run.

    • Eddie

It was a mess up on the app or ESPN if u following on those because he come on first base to run for votto since it was 12-0

      • Jonathan Linn

yeah. i was watching on the MLB app and the ending didn’t make sense. it showed Stephenson was at the plate.

  114. MCT

This bad Cubbies team is making Hembree look good.

    • beelicker

Hembree has no idea where his slider is going

  115. RedsMonk65

FWIW — Shogo, Barrero, and Stephenson all in the game right now.

  116. JB

After watching Rizzo’s and Baez’s crap and listening to the Cubs fans for the last few years, I’m going to enjoy them being terrible for hopefully the next 20 years.

    • Melvin

It’s getting back to the good ol days when we could beat up on the Pirates and Cubs all year and even Astros back then. I’m glad they’re gone. They’re too good now. 🙂

  117. Mark Moore

Umpire is suffering from blurred vision, but that’s fine.

If Hembree manages to hold that zero the Stupid Cubs are sporting …

In any case, it’s nearly time to pack it in. Great fun tonight all around. Hope we saved some for tomorrow and Wednesday.

    • Mark Moore

And we get a Hembree inning after all.

      Night everyone.

  118. Dennis Westrick

Well, there goes the shutout! Good grief Heath!

  119. RedAlert

Hembree is incapable of having a clean inning ….. why in the world is this guy
continuing to occupy a roster space !!!!

  120. Arthur

No reason in the world for Hembree to be taking up a roster spot. Absolutely none.

    • Dennis Westrick

How do you spell gone? H-e-m-b-r-e-e

  121. RedsMonk65

Not lethal tonight, obviously, but HH disappoints again. Good thing it was not a 3 or 4-run game.

  122. JB

If Hayward gets a hit off of you, you know you stink.

  123. LDS

It’s so hard to find a DFA candidate on the 26 man roster. Just no place to put Senzel. Looks like a good outcome tonight, SD is still trailing the Rockies.

  124. Dennis Westrick

Please Bell, try someone else! HH just gave up a run-scoring double on an 0-2 pitch!

  125. Roger Garrett

This nonsense has to stop.Get some of these guys off this team. Its bad enough the Cubs are little league and not to be outdone we bring in a little league pitcher of our own.I feel for HH but he needs to go.

  126. Arthur

Remarkable how a pitcher who throws a clean inning with 14 pitches MUST be removed from the game, but Hembree can be allowed to get knocked all over the park while facing 7 or more hitters and throw 30+ pitches.

  127. Dennis Westrick

I predict Howell will walk the first batter he faces, or worse! Prepare the DFA paperwork for HH now!

  128. dhmorgan

Jason Heyward is an interesting player. He was an average, or above average, hitter for Atlanta. He still has a lifetime average of .258.
Last year and this year he has been severely struggling at the plate.
He reminds me of someone on the Reds, but I can’t quite put my finger on who that might be.

    • DaveCT

One, he’s vern struggling for years.

Two. Hard to say. Maybe a little Dave Parker. Maybe some Bobby Tolan. Year, I feel
Some Bobby Tolan. If not for a torn achilles …

  129. Jason R Franklin

I don’t understand why Hembree is still a Red. Is his contract so expensive that we can’t cut him loose?

  130. Votto4life

Heath Hembree needs to be released tomorrow. If you can’t get thru an inning with your team up 12-0, you have no business being on a major league roster.

    • RedAlert

Hoffman – box of chocolates – geeze !
Only role he needs is mop up duty

  131. Dennis Westrick

We just can’t have an easy win can we?

  132. DaveCT

I am reflecting at this moment of a bullpen including Raisel Iglesias and Archie Bradley. Fun times.

    • Jason R Franklin

Reds need to change their mentality that bullpen arms can be anyone off the streets.

  133. Arthur

Apparently, the bullpen is going to do their level best to create a save situation this evening.

  134. Bet on Red

Hembree is the next to go… on Minumum salary, and even if you are around to be the slop guy you still need to at some point get outs. Dont mind the Cubs scoring runs as long as they dont score 12

  135. Roger Garrett

This is just terrible to see.Up 12-0 and its now 12-5 and we will end up having to use 3 or 4 guys to get 6 outs. What a joke. This is not on Bell this is on not getting these guys out of Cincy and getting some guys from Louisville up here.

    • Jason R Franklin

This mostly comes from not signing anyone worthwhile during the off season. The Reds are scared to spend money on quality RP’s.

  136. Dennis Westrick

I can’t watch this any longer! Will check the box score in the morning! Going to clean the cat litter box and then call it a night!

  137. Mark A Verticchio

Hembree has to be released tomorrow, can’t get through an inning with a 12 run lead. How can you ever trust him to pitch?

    • Arthur

You’re just saying that because he now has an ERA OF 6.38.

That’s not very good, is it??

  138. Melvin

That was an error? I don’t think so. Larkin agrees.

  139. Indy Red Man

Just release HH and do him a favor. They’re going to end up blowing his arm out or something. The poor guy just looks defeated when he comes out there.

  140. Chris Holbert

Is Hembree really worth more on the roster than Senzel?

  141. Bet on Red

Tucker not having any of this Cubs scoring without retrebution

  142. MCT

Tucker getting back some of those runs that Heath let go.

  143. Roger Garrett

Who gets the 9th with a 9 run lead and should we be nervous?

  144. beelicker

Jose fouled off the one pitch in the zone … the one he hit was outside only a little. They’re determined to automatically not give him anything much in the zone and he seems hip to that … a good sign

  145. Votto4life

Rockies up 5-2 over Padres in the 8th. Fingers crossed.

  146. Arthur

    Nice win. Huge offensive explosion.

But Geno did what he does best – a mind-numbing 7 runners left on base.

  147. Votto4life

CJ Cron hits a walk off home run. Rockies 6 Padres 5
