Starting Pitchers

Sonny Gray

After back-to-back rough starts in late July, Sonny Gray has allowed seven runs in his last three starts (3.94 ERA).

Sonny Gray has dominated left-handed hitters this season, holding them to a .198/.276/.329 line this season. Right-handed hitters have found a lot more success against him – hitting .308/.381/.485. The home and road splits for Gray have also been stark. On the road he has a 3.08 ERA (5.44 at home) and hitters have a .639 OPS away from Cincinnati against him (.809 at home).

Aaron Nola

With a 4.35 ERA this season, it’s the highest number in that column for Aaron Nola since the 2016 season and it’s not even close. He’s battled inconsistency all year. When he’s been on, he’s really been on. But when he hasn’t been on, it’s gotten ugly. The Reds scored three runs in 5.0 innings against him in a 17-3 Phillies win on June 1st.

Lefties have hit .243/.296/.444 against Nola this season. Righties haven’t been quite that good, hitting just .236/.280/.384 against him this season. He’s pitched significantly better at home than on the road. In Philadelphia he’s holding hitters to a .597 OPS (.787 on the road) and has a 2.97 ERA (5.56 on the road).

This is a big game. A 3-4 road trip and 9 over .500 is a lot better than a 2-5 road trip and 7 over. Phillies have a strong line up and pitcher.
Reds need to play a good base game today.

  2. ClevelandRedsFan

Doug, does that mean Senzel has completed his rehab assignment and staying in AAA or Reds want to give him a few more reps before bringing him up?

  3. docproc

Help me understand the Nick Senzel move. Does this mean his rehab is over but they don’t think he’s ready for MLB action?

    • Alan Horn

It probably means they are buying time until the rosters expand on Sept. 1 because they are still in the pennant race and don’t want to cut anyone from the roster. Likely means we won’t see Barreo until Sept. 1st either.

      • Alan Horn

Anyone we would likely cut would be lost cause we would have to release them. I agree with some who say that would be a good thing but Reds management is likely keeping them on hand for insurance until the end of the season.

    • Klugo

The club isn’t ready to bring him up for one reason or another, but his rehab time is expiring or has expired.

    • Old-school

There’s a limited time you can rehab. I would interpret this as an inevitable move to deal with the Reds roster crunch until September 1 created by the guaranteed huge contracts to Akiyama, Suarez, and Moose Those players cant be sent to AAA and wont be DFA’d. Senzel has options.
It also gets Senzel every day reps which he needs. Were Senzel to come up, he would not be playing every day.

  4. Klugo

We gotta catch the Brewers. If we slide into the Wildcard, then we’re staring at a one game playoff against either the Dodgers or Giants- and probably their best LH starter. Only to play the other, if we somehow win the play-in. That would be daunting, to say the least.

    • scotly50

I am of this opinion as well. Just making the playoffs just to get likely humiliated again. The Division is the only shot at a run in the playoffs.

  5. Dennis Westrick

44 games to go! EVERY GAME is important going forward! Good to see Winker back in the lineup as well as Moose!

  6. MBS

I’m hoping they bring up Barrero soon, so he’ll be eligible for the post season. Senzel I’m guessing will come up when his bat heats up, and they feel confident he can contribute on a regular basis.

  7. Mark Moore

If I understand it correctly, Naquin still has an option left and could be sent down Aside from that, any call-up right now will require a DFA of somebody. We’re loaded with pitchers at the moment and a little tighter on position players. Senzel likely takes Naquin’s spot, or at least that’s how I see it.

If Senzel is going to be post-season eligible, doesn’t he have to be back in Cincy no later than the 31st? So maybe this is all procedural compliance to get him a few more games in L’ville.

Barrero is a different situation entirely. But perhaps they bring him up right at the August 31 deadline as well.

    • Bet on Red

no senzel is already postseason eligible since he was up before he got injured. His IL time also counts as time in the majors. He qualifies for the postseason already.

      • Mark Moore

OK, thanks. I figured there were a few variations in the rules that played into the mix. So keep him playing daily in L’ville and getting stronger. Barrero remains the biggest tough decision for position players in that case. And if you hold off until August 31, you maximize his daily reps in L’ville.

  8. LDS

Come on get serious, a blind monkey with a dart board could find viable DFA candidates on the MLB roster. The Reds management from the FO to the field aren’t trying to field their best team.

    • Mark Moore

Not saying they couldn’t … just observing their past actions to that effect.

  9. Eddie

I hope for my bday today the reds have a good game. It would be nice to see Gray finally get some run support which he only gets 2 runs from offense mostly when he pitches.

    • Mark Moore

Happy birthday, Eddie. My dad would have been 93 today.

      • Eddie

Thanks for the bday wish. I’m sorry to hear that Mark. Today is my 28th

  10. Bet on Red

must win game for the reds. Got Lucky with the No No thrown in AZ last night. got to take the series. Don’t mind Senzel taking reps in Louisville a little longer.

  11. RedsGettingBetter

Finally Freeman was DFA… Is it not a release? I understand he has options so he is not in waivers or is he?
I think the FO is precautionary about Senzel and for the being time keeps him getting his optimal shape playing every day at AAA but the IL is over…

    • Bet on Red

The DFA is to open the 40 man roster spot. The reds will have 7 days to trade him, put him through waivers or release him.

  12. Mark Moore

That’s the way to break through a little slump, RoY!!

  13. Bet on Red

WOw, a Quick thumb there for Castillonos…. garbage zone for the umps there. Bell now gone.

    • Mark Moore

Good for Bell, even though it’s going to pinch us a bit today. AA to right and batting 3rd is what I’ll wager happens.

      • Bet on Red

strongly believe you are right…. replace the right-handed batter with another one.

      • RojoB

Looks like Freddy B. wanted to go with Shogo

      • Melvin

This is not a slam against David Bell, believe it or not, as obviously most if not all do it, but if I was a ML manager I’d get real tired of my opponent stacking his lineup against me like the Reds lineup is stacked today. I’d be real tempted, if I had at least two SP ready to go, to start one guy for three batters, and then bring in another starter. I’m sure the first guy would be able to go the next day or the one after. just to shake things up and make the opposing manager think twice.

      • RojoB

And looks like Freddy B had a premonition about Akiyama-san

    • RojoB

Not watching but game cast had that strike three solidly in the strike zone. Poor showing if Castellanos got run because he guessed breaking ball and got locked up by a fastball

Now they don’t have his bat and Nola was already getting hit hard. No bueno

      • Bet on Red

yea i dont know what is going on with gameday but that was outside…. now everyone is going to be making sure they get that outside corner now.

      • RojoB

Figures. I don’t doubt it. Umpshow is the WORST

  14. Mark Moore

Waiting to see the replay on Nick’s beef. Actually glad DB is getting the jack as well. With zero accountability proven over and over and over on a zone that is too often horrible, something has to be done.

OK, Freddie – it’s your team now. Take ’em home!

  15. JB

Umpires have stunk this whole series. Nick needed to walk away though. They need him today.

  16. RedAlert

Sick and tired of these umps !!! Be talking stile zone right there !!!! Dudes been bad all year !!!!! Bring on the robots !!!

  17. Votto4life

I used to think the umpires got calls right 95% of the time…the box has shown just how bad they really are…I didn’t want to see humans replaced by robot umps, but after this season I am all for the robots.

    • Mark Moore

The box may be inaccurate top to bottom, but side to side it is very accurate. Players do have different zones up and down, but the plate is and has always been a fixed width.

    • centerfield

Sean Barber gets it right 6% of the time.

  18. JB

I think the umpire is the clown that was on first and called Stephenson out and he was a step PAST first.

  19. Dennis Westrick

At least we don’t have to worry about the no-hitter being thrown against the Reds!

    • Mark Moore

+100 for that positive vibe. No-no and shutout off the table.

  20. Mark A Verticchio

Moose does not look good I think I would rather have Suarez, cant’ believe I said that.

    • LGR

How about Schrock or Lopez, or Farmer and 3rd and Barrero at SS, before you say Suarez lol

  21. Mark Moore

And that was as bad or worse as Castellanos’ blown call.

OK, I promise I’m done commenting on the incompetence of MLB umpires and the complete lack of oversight or accountability (for today).

  22. RedAlert

Ump behind plate is incompetent !! How is he allowed to umpire at this level !!!
    Ridiculous !!!!!

      • Bet on Red

Mark you may be Joking but you are right. Once an umpire makes it to the majors it is near impossible to fire them unless you find one of them fixing a game.

      • Mark Moore

        I know … it’s a classic Catch-22.

  23. JB

Ump gives one back to Gray. He must have a 3PM flight.

  24. DHud

Umpire accountability HAS to come up in CBA talks this offseason….right?

    • Mark Moore

I’m told it can’t. They are under an entirely different contract and union structure. So even if it comes up, it won’t amount to a hill of beans. Despite all that, this has to be something players and owners would be united on. It hurts them both to leave it alone to the status quo.

  25. Mark Moore

McCutcheon really is declining. I always liked him as a player even when he was a Pie-Rat. Just one of those guys – a ballplayer. It’s a little sad to see him fade this way, especially a failing glove in the easiest OF position.

    • dhmorgan

So true. I watched him play when he was with the Hickory Crawdads.
His smile just says that he loves playing the game.
I’ll always root for him to do well (except against the Reds).

  26. dhmorgan

Gray with 19 pitches in 2 innings.
    Keep it up.

  27. JB

I just checked umpire scorecard and this umpire ranked the worst in the last 5 days. He did a Mets game and his accuracy was 87%. Almost everybody is in the 90s.

    • Mark Moore

Yet he gets his turn like everybody else on his squad. That’s just plain sad.

  28. Mark Moore

Gray says, “This is one way to do it, guys. Anybody else care to back me up?”

    • Bet on Red

india says i got you, Winker just misses it

  29. Mark Moore

A little station-to-station stuff. That works.

C’mon, Jesse. Make Nola pay and take the umpire out of the equation.

  30. Mark Moore

Slap single or double here would work.

  31. Bet on Red

Shogo says “fine, Ill do it myself.” horrific strike zone leads to a two run triple

  32. Mark Moore

That’s some fine redemption and quiets the crowd. As much or more outside as the last two fiascos he let go by.

  33. JB

Amazing to me that opposing teams dont play their left fielder closer to the line when Shogo is up.

    • Mark Moore

Right. Let’s hope they don’t figure that out for at least another month or so.

  34. Indy Red Man

Not big on Shogo overall, but other guys have to step up to have a winning team. Picking up Nick was big there and nice hustle by India!

This is a big game! 2-5 road trip sucks, but you come home with a 3 out of 4 streak and put a game between us and Philly then thats huge!

  35. Dennis Westrick

Just watched Winker’s and Shogo’s at bats on the MLB Network live look-in! The HP umpire is atrocious! 2 of the called strikes to Shogo were nowhere close to being strikes! Bring on the robo umpire!

    • Bet on Red

it did however lead to Shogo swinging on what would have been called strike three leading to the double that scored two though

  36. MK

Did NQuin spit in his helmet then put it on before his at bat?

    • JB

He blows in it. He had been doing that all season

    • Mark Moore

      I see a 10-day IL stint coming.

  37. Indy Red Man

If they have to IL Wink then Barrero is an easy call-up and Farmer can play some LF
    He’s earned it over Senzel

    • LGR

Eh. I think the obvious call is just Senzel.

      • Indy Red Man

Thats what they’d probably do, but Barrero gives you more range at SS plus he’s outhit Senzel. I think they’d be ok though w/Senzel if Moose would contribute.

    • Mark Moore

It will be Senzel. More versatility than Farmer overall. And Barrero needs to play daily. DB would sit him way too much.

      • Indy Red Man

More versatile? More familiar with the trainers room maybe? Farmer catches and doesn’t live off IL welfare every year

    • Mark Moore

To add to my comment, only if Barrero actually starts 9 of 10 games (assuming a 10-day IL stint).

    • LGR

For them to bring up Barrero, which they should, they’d have to get rid of one the position players. I think Moose and Suarez are probably always safe, I think Naquin is probably safe, so it’s be between Akiyama and Aquino.

  38. centerfield

If Winker is going to be hour by hour, the Reds need to call up Senzel. Doolittle is the obvious candidate to “get hurt”

    • LGR

Or Hembree, either or is fine. Both will be gone soon anyway.

      • Melvin

I just think David Bell will be real hesitant to give up a lefty. I wouldn’t be surprised to see them all stay whether they should or not.

  39. kevinz

    Back nothing to play with.
Stinks for Winker and the Reds.
    Time for Senzel and Barrero.
Mayb not but could add a Jolt.

  40. Mark Moore

Mr. Suarez … take note of Mr. Votto on that play. He knew where he was going BEFORE he fielded it and stuck with that decision. Result was getting the lead-off runner and negating the bunt.

  41. Arthur

Right now is when Sonny needs to prove his mettle. Offense gave him a lead. Now he needs to shut the door on this team for 6 or even 7 innings, allow the offense to play add-on, and then maybe let Hembree pitch one last time before he turns in his uniform.

Everyone says Gray is a terrific competitor. Time to show it right now.

    • Mark Moore

+100 this is kind of a put up or shut up game for Sonny. Like the results so far.

  42. centerfield

Gray pitching to contact, so far.

  43. Mark Moore

OK, guys. Next man up approach looks like it’s working. Let’s get another crooked number here.

  44. Indy Red Man

Naquin is warming up again!! Have to run his numbers lately.

Nola 0-2 mistake after 0-2 mistake. He’s off his game. Lets bomb him out of there!!

  45. Mark Moore

But that was a strike, so Farmer shouldn’t advance since he was obviously standing in the zone … right?

    • Mark Moore

My apologies, friends. I said I was going to stop commenting on the wretched calls. But this guy just makes it too easy (and gets my BP up).

  46. dhmorgan

I see that Kyle “The Baseball Magnet” Farmer is back.

  47. JB

Dang Farmer got hit on the funny bone. That’s got to hurt like ….

    • Melvin

Good thing he’s durable. Still though getting hit on your throwing elbow is a recipe for an IL stint.

  48. Bet on Red

Reds cooking in the 4th. Bases loaded no outs…. need Shogo the slugger right here. If Winker is going to the IL it will be Senzel coming up. When Senzel got optioned he is requred to stay in the minors for 10 days unless there is an injury.

  49. Mark Moore

A little nervous with Moose on 3rd and the thought of a bunt here.

  50. LGR

I’m sick of seeing Reds pitchers ground into double plays. Just don’t swing the bat.

  51. Mark A Verticchio

Bases loaded nobody out = zero runs, this one is on Barnhart.

    • Mark Moore

Yep. Bat taken our of Farmer’s hands. Tucker has to poke something deeper than that.

  52. JB

Bases loaded and no outs and they get nothing. Seen this before.

    • Slicc50

Yup, when you have a bad bullpen, those can come back to haunt you. You have to put teams away when you have the chance instead of letting them hang around!

  53. Votto4life

That was absolutely terrible..Tucker has to drive in a run in that situation. Just terrible.

  54. Indy Red Man

Stephenson homered in his last 2 starts. Let him play til he gets tired. I like Tucker, but he’s not half as good offensively.

  55. kevinz

Mayb I am recalling it wrong.
But lately this is when Gray fall apart.

    • kevinz

      Yup def recalling correctly.
Seems to lose it in the 4 or so.
      Come on Gray lets goo.
      Down Nick and Jesse.
      Need to Pitch,

Stephenson 1-2 with a walk off Nola

Tucker 0-9 vs Nola, but Bell can’t be bothered to look up what I can look up in 45 seconds

    • Old-school

How much of that is Bell vs Sonny Gray?

Bell pretty much said Miley wants barnhart catching him

  57. Votto4life

Didn’t think it was possible to walk Didi

  58. Mark A Verticchio

You are right Gray has been having problems in the 4th inning.

  59. Bet on Red

    Dear Sonny Gray,

the announcers have gotten to the ice cream convo. Get us out of the inning so we can talk about reds Raking.

    signed… a fan

  60. burtgummer01

They probably need to put Winker on the dl and bring up Senzel. The thought of AA seeing more playing time is nauseating

    • Votto4life

The other day someone mentioned AA replacing Castellanos next year. That’s a plan to cement your hold on fourth place.

      • JB

Agree. AA has done nothing yet to say he will bring what Castellanos has.

  61. Mark Moore

Nice bang-bang by Joey and Farmer

  62. Dennis Westrick

Hate to harp on it all the time but 2 walks in the inning by Sonny! He escaped but running up his pitch count in a game where we need him to go 7 innings!

  63. Dennis Westrick

In addition to the TOOTBLANs this Reds team has to be leading MLB in situations with the bases loaded, no outs and no runs scored!

  64. Reddawg2012

I let myself have the thought yesterday that it looked like India might be starting to slump a little bit. Clearly I am an idiot.

  65. LGR

And that’s why Sonny shouldn’t have ever swung the bat.

  66. Indy Red Man

They never bunt when they should and now they’re going to bunt the bat out of Joey’s hands? Cmon Bell?

    • Bet on Red

I think Shogo was thinking of Bunting for a hit there

      • Indy Red Man

Maybe so. Worked out the same way anyway.

Moose has to get 1 in somehow. Not expecting a gap shot or anything greedy. Just get 1 in and go from there

  67. Bet on Red

Forced our way into Phillys bullpen in the 5th. Good sign.

  68. Mark Moore

The temptation to PH Sir Strandsalot feels strong right here … hope Tinker can resist. A little worried about India at the moment.

  69. JB

Relief pitcher named Falter. Reds should trade for him. They need a guy in the bullpen with that name.

  70. Mark A Verticchio

I don’t like Moose against lefties but numbers don’t give Reds much of a choice, quit carrying so many pitchers.

  71. Tim

Falter isn’t a very good name for a reliever.

  72. Old-school

Moose hitting .095 against lefties this year. Suarez hitting .130

  73. Mark Moore

Really hoping this new pitcher will falter in a big way and let some crooked numbers blossom for the good guys.

  74. Indy Red Man

Lefties 7-25 (.280) off him so he isn’t that great. Lets go Moose!!

  75. Indy Red Man

MooStradus strikes again. Great at-bat….watched it just like I did

  76. Slicc50

Terrible Moustakas! Right down the middle!

  77. Mark Moore

Sure, just stand there Mr. Moose … SMH!!!

  78. JB

With Winker and India hurting and Farmer getting plunked on the elbow it’s time to bring up Senzel and Barrero and stop it with the 30 relief pitchers.

  79. Slicc50

Advice to Reds hitters. If it is close away, swing the bat!

  80. centerfield

I hope Senzel is in a cab on his way to Cincy right now.

  81. Bet on Red

Naquin patience pays off….4-1…. now farmer can end it here.

  82. Mark Moore

Really hope India can come back out, but sounds like that won’t happen.

    • Mark Moore

The RoY is back out. AT least it’s not his throwing arm.

  83. LGR

Lorenzon would be playing the outfield if that would have been a called 3rd strike to Naquin.

  84. Bet on Red

Suarez coming into the game it sounds like… India out…. I bet Moose to second… Suarez is at third. Might have pitchers playing the field by the end of this.

    • Bet on Red

Scratch this entire comment. I was wrong and India is a BOSS!!!!

      • Mark Moore

+5,000 (100 for you, the rest for India)

  85. Mark A Verticchio

Reds have 2 black holes at 3rd base, Suarez and Moose. If the are serious about winning bring up not one but two people. Might not have a choice now due to injuries.

  86. Indy Red Man

Senzel better get on the road. We’ll need him tomorrow

    • Mark Moore

Did not play today at all. That game is almost over. Just be careful what you ask for. It means one of Winker or India is heading to the IL.

      • Melvin

Barrero, but I think it would just about break Farmer’s hart to be taken off of SS now.

  87. deafmix3

Between Moustakis and Suarez, I have to think the Reds are getting less production from 3B this year than most, if not all, of baseball. Moustakis is useless. Maybe I’m old fashioned but I have a lot of trouble dealing w/ a guy making $16 million who can’t even bother to get in shape. He looks like a manatee.

    • Mark Moore

He is looking a little pudgy, especially compared to Geno (or even Joey).

    • TR

I’ve been disappointed with The Mouse since the Reds gave him the X-large contract.

  88. Votto4life

    Paging Nick Senzel..Paging Mr. Senzel

  89. Bet on Red

Talk about a slow game…. Bats game started 5 minutes later but is in the 8th inning…here we are in the 5th

  90. Mark Moore

I really thought Shogo was tracking to catch that ball. Then Naquin shows up and it drops. Probably wasn’t getting caught anyway.

I don’t like JT Realmuto at all. I just don’t.

  91. Mark A Verticchio

Time to get bull pen up.

    • Mark Moore

Afraid so. At least they are rested.

  92. Indy Red Man

Sonny doesn’t have his good stuff. I’d get ready to go get him before it falls apart.

  93. Indy Red Man

Whats wrong with Lorenzen here? Get a dp here or hold them to 1 and thats huge!
Then let him go 1 more against the bottom of the order

  94. Bet on Red

Sonny gets harper and gregarious and thats it i think

    • Mark Moore

Only 70 pitches so far too. Just not throwing the good stuff anymore today.

      • Bet on Red

Yep a shame…this is why it is a good thing we pitched Doolittle yesterday. Fully rested Bullpen

  95. Hanawi

Two years left on that Moustakas contract for 34 million plus a 4 million club buyout of 2024. That’s going to be a tough one to swallow. I’m not sure he has a role on the team right now since India took his position, but no way anyone is going to touch that deal in a trade.

  96. JB

Gray should have never pitched to Harper. Why he is in there still is beyond me.

  97. Old-school

Gray had 2 awful starts in july
Hit 2 batters in the first inning against the Brewers including Rowdy Tellez with the bases loaded

    Now he hits another batter

Maybe Gray is losing command not using his sticky grip stuff

    • RedAlert

Dude can’t ever give you more than 5 innings – awful

Not sure I want to see rocketman Simms in the game though at this point

  98. Mark Moore

And our men on base with 1 or no outs are coming back to haunt us here.

  99. Mark A Verticchio

Just another poor outing by Gray, he is your #5 starter now. SAD

    • Joe P.

If there is one reason to bring up Hunter Greene, Gray struggling is that reason.

      • BatsLeftThrowsRight

Shut down Gray with arm fatigue for next two weeks on IL and then give Hunter Greene his next three starts. Reevaluate at end of August before finalizing who is eligible for post season.

You can then bring Gray back if you wish and keep Greene as a reliever.

  100. Mark Moore

Sadak needs to mute himself. Gray was done, even if that only ended up netting one run there.

    • RedAlert

I agree – that guy would be a lot better off the less he said

    • JB

Totally agree. Gray doesnt have a put away pitch right now. Harper was just waiting him out and Didi just put it in the outfield to score a run. Something the Reds dont know how to do.

  101. LGR

Pitches to Harper, pitches to Didi, gets pulled vs the righty? Not sure I get it.

  102. Indy Red Man

Shogo’s arm there…..guy tags from 1st base on a flyball that wasn’t that deep.

Need Sims to rebound here. 4 clean outs please!

    • LGR

What, there’s nobody in baseball getting him at the plate lol. That was plenty deep.

      • Mark Moore

Yep. That’s what I saw as well. Plenty deep (unless I’m running).

      • Indy Red Man

I said guys tags from 1st base

You know the lead run into scoring position of a routine flyball

      • Indy Red Man

My bad…or actually Bally Sports bad. They showed yellow dots on 2nd/3rd for a second so I thought both guys tagged up til they fixed it

    • Mark Moore

Apologies … you are correct on that front. Just bad baseball. Period.

  103. Bet on Red

Dodging bullets like the Matrix that inning. Got to get some runs back. Need to see A team Bullpen only

  104. Mark Moore

What spot is Sims now due to hit? Limited bench options. I’m still hoping India can hold up through the end of this game.

  105. Dennis Westrick

Need a crooked number to get back those 2 runs we just gave the Phillies!

  106. Indy Red Man

Idk about Sonny? 1 hit thru 3 shutout innings then can’t finish 5 innings? Fastball kind of flat and only broke off a handful of big curves.

    • Mark Moore

Are we seeing the results of the “no sticky stuff” enforcement?

  107. Hanawi

Not sure Gray is going to be the same pitcher with the crackdown on foreign substances. He’s been pretty rough for a bit now. Hope he can turn it around, but he’s looking like a back end starter. Which is fine if he could go longer than five innings.

    • Mark Moore

Right. He’s definitely looking like a 4/5 for us at the moment.

  108. dhmorgan

Falter still in the game. I remember him from the last game.
He pretty much shut down the Reds. I hope for a different outcome this time.

  109. Vared

If you know you’re leaving your reliever in to bat and go another inning why not go with Lorenzen?

    • Indy Red Man

He gets the top of the order in the 7th

  110. Mark Moore

Not quite enough. Gave it a nice ride with the gimpy wing.

  111. Bet on Red

Got a Perfect game notification, anyone know who it is?

    • Indy Red Man

I cheated, but McKenzie on the Guardindians

      • JB

I hate that name. Cleveland cant get anything right.

      • Mark Moore

For the record, I get changing the name. I just don’t get the end result or the freakish logo.

  112. Mark Moore

What should be the heart of the order here … but we get what we get today.

  113. Indy Red Man

Going to a friends for dinner at 5:30. Can’t we get this 9 inning game that started at 1:05 in under 4 hours? I’m going to assume no extra innings

    • Mark Moore

No. Tell your friend this is WAY more important and you’ll have to delay.

  114. Mark Moore

Shogo slap and a Joey blast … if he swings at those outside the zone strikes.

    • RedAlert

Reds won’t score another run probabaly – be lucky to hold onto this game with what we got in the lineup right now

  115. Mark Moore

Anyone want to meet at Miami Valley Gaming after this?

  116. Old-school

Reds left scoring opportunities out there earlier in the game

Need to add on and give Lorenzen and Givens some insurance

Sonny gray and India have 4 hits

    Rest of the team 2

  117. Mark A Verticchio

To be honest this isn’t much of a line up the Reds have out there now. Votto, India, and maybe Farmer and Naquin.

    • JB

Yep and they arent giving Votto anything. This is why they need to drop a couple of pitchers and bring up some right handed bats.

      • Mark Moore

Too many pitchers used to be a necessity. Now it’s a luxury we can’t afford.

  118. Mark A Verticchio

    You guys are exactly right.

  119. Mark Moore

Tatis, Jr is back and starting in RF for the Friars.

    • RedAlert

      Walks walks walks -unbelievable

      Escaped ! Lucky

  120. Indy Red Man

Cmon Mike! Walks are why he can never start. Too many 20+ innings even when he puts up a zero.

  121. Old-school

    Lorenzen looking like 1 inning
    Cessa next
    Givens next

DJ pitching philosophy is miss bats- even if it means walks

Pitch to induce weak contact is out

Nibbling and walks and 25 pitch innings are going to continue to define this pitching staff x for Miley who knows who he is.

    • Mark Moore

Let’s just hope Mikey gets to take some swings. That would mean we produced something this inning.

    • Indy Red Man

Half they walk the leadoff guy and thats never anyone’s philosophy

  122. Mark Moore

If “wedged in there” is out of play and there was no doubt about that, then why does this require a replay challenge?

    • Mark Moore

Seems that would be Umpiring 101 – know the basic ground rules, etc.

      • Mark Moore

It’s almost laughable. We’re just happy here in our house that we got the benefit this time around.

  123. JB

How can the first base umpire not see the ball got wedged in there?

    • Mark Moore

Exactly … and neither did 2B or 3B. I’ll give the idiot at HP a pass on that. But they conferenced, explained it (giving Pickler enough time to get a clear challenge review) and still didn’t see it.

  124. Bet on Red

Barnhart got lucky on the missed 3rd strike…. and converted it. I think Joe might get tossed

    • JB

I’m not sure what a strike is after this game. It’s got to be tough as a pitcher. And a hitter.

    • Mark Moore

      He was chirping pretty good.

That HP umpire should be ashamed of himself if he actually does his “required” post-game review.

  125. dhmorgan

Good for Farmer and Barnhart. Reds needed an insurance run.
A couple more would be even better.

  126. DaveCT

Nice call, HP. Just cost the Phils a run. If I’m Girardi, I’m changing the pitcher then getting thrown out.

  127. Indy Red Man

Bad umps are one thing, but usually you figure out what their zone is by the middle of the game, but this guy is totally unpredictable

    • Mark Moore

Right … he’s all over the place.

    • JB

Needed that because I dont trust the ump.

  128. Mark Moore

Girardi just told the ump “That’s on you”

    • Mark Moore

A little surprised he didn’t get jacked for that.

Welsh says fans are beginning to exit.

      • Joe P.

Headed out to the parking lot like they’re handing out bags of twenties.

  129. Bet on Red

and ty stephenson breaks the back

  130. kevinz

TS starting to show his Power.
    India as well.
    Need Both Healthy.

    • kevinz

      Learning to turn On Pitches.
      Very awesome to see.

  131. Joe P.

I hated this umpire’s strike zone, until he gave Barnhart 4 strikes. Barnhart doubles, Stephenson homers. Good stuff.

  132. Reddawg2012

If Winker is going to miss extended time, Stephenson needs to play 4 out of every 5 games. We need his bat in the lineup.

    • Joe P.

Just need to get another right handed bat on the bench… and I hope India’s shoulder is going to be OK

  133. Indy Red Man

Tyler 3 in a row. Look out Joey!!! Lefty tomorrow so Tyler will be back at it! They need to get Senzel in there too

    • LGR

Doesn’t Miley pitch tomorrow? If so it’ll be Tucker.

      • Mark Moore

Really time to break that little thing. This isn’t Steve Carlton and Tim McGarver.

      • LGR

I mean I agree, but I’m sure it’ll still be Tucker.

  134. Tim

Ump is consistent in his inconsistency.

    • Mark Moore

His only consistency is to keep them guessing as to what he’ll call. Except for Shogo. Shogo should know a ball waist high 2-8 inches off the plate is a strike. Every.Single.Time.

  135. dhmorgan

There may be a better all around catching duo in the league than Barnhart and Stephenson.
I’m just not aware of any.

    • Mark Moore

There isn’t. Only catching crew with zero errors so far this season.

  136. TR

Stephenson is a meet the ball, natural hitter. Bring up Senzel and Barrero and let the young core take the Reds to the playoffs.

  137. Bet on Red

Took the Moneyline on the Reds and the under on a HRE of 26.5… Need a quiet rest of the game

  138. Indy Red Man

We’re going 4 hours. So much for speeding up the games

  139. kevinz

    Man always drama.
    Need to finish this one.

  140. Indy Red Man

If Moose doesn’t go down to a knee then he tags him out easily.

    • Mark Moore

Likely. He reduced his reach by a couple of inches and that’s all it would have taken. Inning.Over.

  141. Mark Moore

Come on guys!!! Knuckle down and get the out!!

  142. Indy Red Man

Sadak praises the runner for jogging to 2nd on a 2 out line drive then deciding to run

  143. Reddawg2012

I cringed when Sadak said it looked like this was going to be a pitch efficient inning for Cessa.

  144. Mark Moore

Wid Whiz or Widout? I’m taking a poll …

    • Mark Moore

And when I was working downtown in 2019/2020 I found a great one in the concourse shops beneath City Hall/Market Street heading for the trains.

      And I prefer sliced provolone.

      • Mark Moore

I have a Blackstone flat top griddle. I can make you one if you drop by … 🙂

  145. Indy Red Man

Thats our closer! Givens is 31 and a FA that makes $4 mil. Lorenzen is 29 FA making $4.4 mil

We need both of them….what would it cost? Lorenzen might get a 3 year deal somewhere since he’s younger, but idk? Baseball financials are not my specialty

    • Mark Moore

Mikey was a question mark for a while, but I’m thinking he’s back. I say try and keep them both.

  146. Bet on Red

HAs Shogo been on three times today… with 2 RBIs? That’s a good fill-in for Nick.

    • Doc

Shogo has raised his average about 30 points over the past several weeks as he has gotten more playing time. Wish that could be said for someone else whose name starts with S, and I don’t mean Superman!

  147. LGR

Aquino just looks overmatched against anyone who actually throws strikes at him.

  148. Jimt

Can we please recall Senzel and send AA down

  149. LGR

Think Moose forgot how to play the game today.

  150. Mark Moore

Mr. Moose looks at 2 called strikes … not the redemption we were hoping for. Geno can look at strikes and walk back to the dugout.

  151. RedAlert

Moustakas is completely lost at the plate – completely !

  152. Indy Red Man

Geno aint looking that bad now)))))))))

He is a thoughtful guy that will air condition the fans with one of his huge uppercuts. He’s not a peeper like Moose that watches everything

  153. Slicc50

Moose just not seeing the ball right now I guess? Just watching strike 3 down the middle 2 times today

    • bug

That’s embarrassing, and cowardly!!! Afraid to take his bat off his shoulders, I guess. Frozen in fear.

  154. Indy Red Man

Steele and Hendricks are the 2 best the Cubs have. We better be ready to play! They’ll ruin your party if you’re flat

  155. Mark Moore

94 with that funky arm slot looks pretty good.

    • Mark Moore

And at 96 and 97 (even off the plate) it’s got to be hard to hit.

  156. Joe P.

Right now, Mr. Moose couldn’t hit a ping pong ball in a room full of raining ping pong balls.

    • Mark Moore

+2,500 for a hearty laugh from my childhood

    • bug

He refuses to even swing at perfect strikes. I’d rather see Geno swing and miss it a foot than to see Moose never take his bat off his shoulders.

  157. kevinz

Wish got that other run in.
    Feel more calm if did.

  158. bug

The Reds don’t need a shortstop. They need a third baseman!!! Moose is as bad as Suarez. Geno can’t put a bat on the ball, and Moose refuses to swing. How pitiful!!!!! Moose take a perfect third strike for the second time and does not take his bat off his shoulder,…i.e. he’s too afraid to swing. That’s embarrassing!!!

  159. Mark Moore

I’m not completely miffed at the pitch around to Harper (formerly of the ESPN Washington Harpers). Now time to nail down the save.

  160. Mark Moore

Today’s children’s book is titled “Mr. Barber Can’t Find a Strike Zone With Both Hands and a Map”

    • RedAlert

Lol Mark ! Spot on – he might be the absolute worst I’ve seen all year (for both sides ) – just Brutal !

  161. Indy Red Man

Givens has been a 1 inning guy his whole career. Glad he Kd Didi because he doesn’t go past 25 pitches

  162. Mark Moore

Didn’t we all clamor to get Gregorious in the off season?

    • JB

Not me. I wanted Semien. But Bob couldnt get his wallet out of his pocket.

  163. Bet on Red

Great win by the reds there. Got it done… now time to turn GABP into a crime scene next week

    • Mark Moore

A major crime scene. For several days. So bad the FBI puts all our guys on the 10 most wanted list and looks for serial murders of the Stupid Cubs and Fishies.

    • Doc

2/3 from the then first place Phillies in their ball park. Pretty good job by the Reds, and they beat the team that has Gregorius twice. Just a fact or two to toss in the mix.

  164. Mark Moore

Lost the one we should have won, won the two more difficult ones. Feeling pretty good at this moment.

Back at it tomorrow at GABP. Bring on the Stupid Cubs.

  165. kevinz

Nice took a series In Philly.
    Rare for sure.
    Nice bounce back Reds.
    Goo Reds.
    Onto Next Series.

  166. Jim t

Nice winning 2 of 3 in philly. Would have been a good road trip if we hadn’t gave away the second game in Atlanta

    • BatsLeftThrowsRight

Or the first game in Atlanta, both were thrown away. You can even make a case for casting aside yesterday’s game with the poor late game relief.

  167. Dennis Westrick

Nice win! 3-4 road trip better than 2-5! 43 games to go!

  168. Dennis Westrick

Of those 43 remaining games 7 against the Marlins, 3 with Detroit and 9 against the Pirates! 3 games against the Dodgers but at GABP! And a weird 2 game series against the White Sox in Chicago!

    • bug

That, coupled with the Padres’ rather difficult schedule, could make for an exciting finish. How about those rookies? And how about Joey Votto?? Who woulda thunk he would have had a year like this, after his last few years??? That’s what he gets when he stands up there like a man and uses the whole bat, instead of the extreme choking up and taking those half swings like in the past. Go Reds!!!

      • BatsLeftThrowsRight

You people talk like it’s down to two teams for that final wildcard spot. Look around… the Phillies, Braves and Cardinals are right there along with the Reds and currently fading Mets. Five teams basically within two-three games of each other all chasing the Padres and the NL east division title.

Six teams left alive for remaining two playoff spots in NL. Who you rooting for this week, Brewers or Cardinals?

      • bug

You have a good point there, BatsLeftThrowsRight. One game at a time, and keep winning. Reds needs a third baseman that can hit the ball. Of course, we need a manager too. Freddy did a good job today,..made the right calls. But you are right. Reds are one of six teams after that last spot. Had Bell not given away 15 or 20 games this year by making the same mistakes over and over, that would not be the case. Jmo.

      • LGR

I’d say the Reds have by far the easiest schedule of all the competing teams. The Cardinals have a easy week after this Brewers series, but then have a brutal September. Phillies are relatively easy, but I expect them to win the division. Braves have a TON of west coast games I doubt they make it out alive from. Padres also have it tough.
