The Cincinnati Reds will look to end a 2-game losing streak tonight as they take on the Atlanta Braves at Truist Park. First pitch is scheduled for 7:20pm.

Starting Lineups

Kyle Farmer – SS Ozzie Albies – 2B
Jesse Winker – LF Jorge Soler – RF
Nick Castellanos – RF Freddie Freeman – 1B
Joey Votto – 1B Austin Riley – 3B
Mike Moustakas – 2B Dansby Swanson – SS
Tyler Naquin – CF Adam Duvall – LF
Eugenio Suarez – 3B Travis d’Arnaud – C
Tucker Barnhart – C Guillermo Heredia – CF
Wade Miley – SP Touki Toussaint – SP

Starting Pitchers

Wade Miley

Cincinnati’s best pitcher this season, Wade Miley has a 2.75 ERA in 20 starts this season. He’s coming off a 7-inning, no run performance against Pittsburgh in his last outing.

As we type out every time it’s Miley’s turn to take the mound – teams don’t send too many lefties to the plate against him. The ones who are deemed good enough to get a chance to hit against him don’t do much – in 100 plate appearances this year lefties are hitting .196/.253/.250 against him. Righties are hitting .250/.310/.383 in 403 plate appearances this season.

Touki Toussaint

This season Touki Toussaint has only made four starts for Atlanta. He missed most of the season with a shoulder injury. He rehabbed for a month in the minors before returning to the Braves rotation in late July. The righty has been good in three of his four outings but Milwaukee scored seven runs against him in just 3.1 innings on July 30th.

Small sample size this year, but Toussaint has dominated lefties this year as he’d held them to a .179/.333/.214 line in 36 plate appearances. Righties have found more success against him, hitting .269/.291/.538. In his career his splits aren’t reverse like that – lefties have an .868 OPS against him, while righties had a .729 OPS against him.

News and Notes

Reds option Alex Blandino to Triple-A

Alex Blandino had been in Triple-A on a rehab assignment. Today he’s there, officially, as a member of the team. Blandino was activated by the Reds and then optioned to Triple-A. He had been on the 60-day injured list prior to that. To create a spot for him on the 40-man roster the team placed reliever Art Warren on the 60-day injured list.

Reds management doesnt seem to have the same sense of urgency as the fan base. Maybe that’s good. Maybe not. India probably does need a day off. It’s just a shame it’s Suarez that has to give it to him.

    • Votto4life

I had a sense of urgency with this team until recently. I am still hopeful the Reds make
The play offs, but it’s not the end of the world if they fall a little short. I think 2021 has been a preview of what’s to come.

I expect our window will be wide open next year. With players like India, Stephenson, Senzel, Barrero, Greene and Lodolo along with the veterans. I am more optimistic than I have been in a very long time.

As far as, 2021 is concerned, despite all of the injuries, it’s been a really fun season. The Reds are playing with house money at this point.

      • Slicc50

I’m with you. I am going to enjoy following this team. When they are hot, they are fun!when they are cold, they are cold. We are just a couple of pieces short on offense and in the bullpen. Next year should be really fun!

      • RojoB

That’s a really healthy perspective. I found it helpful

  2. Mark Moore

My daughter works for the Rome Braves (A ball) and Touki did at least one rehab stint with them. Nothing special happened from what I recall. Let’s hope we capitalize on any rust he still has and put up the crooked numbers.

Happy to see Moose playing, but I agree it’s a shame it comes at the expense of Geno over India. Then again, India probably needs a day off here so he can endure the upcoming stretch of games.

    • LDS

We knew it was going to happen. The question is how long does India rest? Because clearly the youngest guy on the team needs a break. Personally, I would have rested Farmer before India.

      • Mark Moore

Have to get Farmer a break sometime, but we’ll pay a heavy price on IF defense when we do.

      • Indy Red Man

Man you are the Hunter Greene of negativity. Why not throw a changeup once in a while. If I was negative about 100% of a product designed for entertainment then I wouldn’t watch it, but thats just me. There is this thing thats about 90 years old called the rookie wall. They don’t play 160 games in the minors

      • Klugo

I imagine Farmer probably won’t get a rest until Blandino or Senzel is back.

      • LDS

IRM, there you go again. So today’s is the defend Bell day? Yesterday, you wanted to string him up by his thumbs. Call it the “rookie wall” if you’d like but I call it bad management. BTW, the rookie wall, there’s not a lot of good statistical analysis supporting that (peer reviewed preferably). Who knows, maybe tonight will be Suarez’s home run night. Maybe you’ll cover your bet. If recent trends are any indication, I’d bet the under.

      • Indy Red Man

I’m not trying to fight. I’m justing giving you a little smack))
As far as defending Bell….I think he’s ok except for managing the pitching. If you were around for Dusty/Price then you’d know they weren’t a rookie out at leadoff all year. Bell isn’t slow to change things and maybe his hands are tied on Suarez? Idk, but I agree with you and everyone else on him. .173 in mid-August for a starter? Unheard of?

      • LDS

IRM, NP. I’m retired in Jan 2020 but admittedly ignored baseball most of the last 20 years. Not that I’m not working, I thought I’d pay more attention (started when Bell arrived unfortunately). I haven’t liked his management since the get go. And I tend to grade him harshly since as a former corporate manager, bad management is a hotspot for me. NBD, it’s just a game but I expect results. One makes a few million a year and producing seems to be a reasonable expectation. BTW, it’s starting to look like you should have taken the over.

  3. Chris

Management, as well as David Bell really frustrate me. As mentioned above, the sense of urgency is just not there. No, I’m not upset about India getting a day off (He’s young, and I don’t think he needs one, but whatever). The bigger issue is with the players on this roster and their use. Naquin should be gone, and Lopez should be up (switch hitter who makes contact. Who wouldn’t have rather seen him last night instead of Moose?). Senzel should be up, and Garrett gone. We don’t need 14 relievers, especially if guys like Gray go 6 innings like he should have last night.

    • Indy Red Man

It was hot and Gray has been on the IL 3 times already. I don’t have a problem pulling him at 98 pitches, but its HH & AG that lost the game.

Its a new day and I’m cashing a nice dog with Miami $$. Lets get it back down to 3.5!
Alcantara pitching for Miami and dominating SD with 98-101 mph heaters and 92-93 mph changeups. Makes me eager to see Hunter Greene do his thing!

    • Doc

Have you talked with India, or examined him? Making a judgement just based on his age is hilarious in its ridiculousness.

      • Chris

I think we saw that India was JUST FINE. The assumption was that he was fine, and if he wasn’t, that’s another thing all together. I’m always amazed at how people are so willing to make excuses for other people’s bad decisions.

  4. Dennis Westrick

Marlins up 7-0 on the Padres in the 9th! Need a win tonight to pick up the game we lost yesterday in the WC race! Cubs are useless now that they gutted their team right after they played the Reds! Let’s score early AND often!

    • Mark Moore

Makes you wish we could play the Stupid Cubs and the Pie-Rats more often.

  5. Bet on Red

With miley on the mound, some bookie messed up today and sent the over-under at 9.5. Reds in a must-win game. India needed a break sooner or later. Guess today was the day

  6. Bet on Red

No the hitting last night was not the best. There is never an excuse for walking in a run

    • Indy Red Man

Yeah thats bs. Sometimes you have to win games 2-1 or 3-2 with meager offense. Actually thats common in the playoffs. You don’t put the back of your pen into tie games in a playoff drive unless you’re forced to in extras

  7. Mark A Verticchio

Castellanos looks more like last years version, I think he will be gone.

  8. Mark Moore

Rain looks pretty steady. Wonder if we run into any delays. I know it rained hard in Hotlanta earlier (daughter was there to see the Van Gogh exhibit and I have a team member there).

  9. Mark Moore

Nice play at the plate to keep it to one run. Not sure what I think about that Naquin play that made it all necessary.

    • Mark Moore

Soler ran through the stop sign!! Thanks for that.

    • Broseph

Eh. I was aggravated at first but he’s not a CF by trade. You’re supposed to assess the angle on hard drives and run back hard, then turn and relocate the ball.

He had that goofy watch the ball the whole time and messed with his stride a bit and timing. Great center fielders get that easily. Good make the play. The Tyler Naquins make it a toss up.

  10. Indy Red Man

Like I said last week, Enciarte was probably signed for a playoff run/playoffs in bigger parks. Wink/Naquin/Nick is not going to cut it. Shogo or AA probably get that ball

    • Bet on Red

Shogo has it all day. Aquino probably. Naquin clearly working his way into Option territory

    • Mark Moore

Doesn’t a player have to be called up by August 31 in order to be post-season eligible? Or did that rule change somewhere along the line.

      • Bet on Red

No I think you are right. But if we are considering the IL players they do not count as minor leaguers for that.

  11. Mark A Verticchio

That was an awful 2nd inning, team looks flat again. The ball should have been caught by Naquin. He is giving this team nothing, Senzel should be playing.

    • Mark Moore

      He is … in CF … for L’ville …

  12. Mark Moore

Don’t look now, but Freeman started at SS for L’ville and he’s already 2-for-2 with a homer.

  13. Bet on Red

If Miley doesn’t have it we are doomed.

    • Mark Moore

You could make your over in the first couple innings all courtesy of the Braves …

  14. Mark Moore

And then THAT happened … might be a long night. Or perhaps a short one if I Clete.

  15. Tom Mitsoff

Offense can’t be asleep again tonight or this is going to be a long one.

  16. Indy Red Man

They’re hitting rockets off of Miley. He’s been pulling a 3 era with a 1.50 whip for some time now and thats never going to last. We better wake up? They can put the NL east 2nd place team in the Wild Card race pretty quickly if SD falters.

  17. Dennis Westrick

At the risk of sounding like a stuck record, the latest HR was preceded by a walk!

  18. Indy Red Man

We’re not giving up solo HRs anymore? Thats not good. Sonny last night? He was rolling. He should’ve gone 6 scoreless, but hangs a 2 out cookie to Duvall with a guy half as dangerous on deck

  19. Bubba Woo

Anyone know why Greene was scratched in Louisville?

    • AllTheHype

“Irritation in right AC joint” but expected to make next start, per Rosecrans tweet.

      • Doc

Right after he threw those highly lauded 100+ mph fastballs in the futures game he ended up with arm surgery.

Right after he threw the highly lauded 37 100+ mph fastballs for Louisville he ends up scratched with shoulder soreness.

Once is a point, two is a trend.

  20. Mark A Verticchio

This season is slipping away. Oh well, almost made it to mid August.

  21. Indy Red Man

    Suarez = Sir Strandsalot

    Moose = Mike Moustrandus

Wink? He can hit, but it takes a triple to score him from 2nd. I can’t express how much I hate station to station/wait on a HR baseball!!!

The great (or good) Reds teams over the years could run! Even the Rolen Reds could go 1st to 3rd and not embarrass themselves. This team sucks in that regard

    • Broseph

Referring to the Votto single Winker didn’t score on? That ball was smoked and a one hop right to Heredia who came up with a nice throw. Winker is slow but a lot of players are getting thrown out on that play

      • Indy Red Man

I agree on that ball. It was smoked pretty good. There are probably 10 guys batting 2nd that would’ve tried it, but idk how many make it?

    • Old-school

Winker is faster than the starting 3b faster than than starting 2b faster than the starting first baseman faster than the catcher faster than the pitcher and about the same as the SS RF and CF

Probably need to start at CF SS 2b for speed

      • Maloney63

Wow, when you put it THAT way we really Do have a slow, slower and slowest team out there tonight!!

  22. Dennis Westrick

Why do we make every opposing pitcher look like Cy Young?

  23. Mark Moore

OK, Joey. Time to find your wallet …

  24. Dennis Westrick

Somebody put out a APB! The offense is MIA!

  25. Dennis Westrick

Any IT folks out there? I can no longer access Redleg Nation on my Chromebook! Having to use my work laptop!

    • Mark Moore

Marginally one (in program management) …

Have you tried turning it off and back on again?

    • Mark Moore

Any chance the browser has done an update lately? I use Chrome as my only browser and never have any trouble with it, but I realize the Chrome-book might be a different version.

  26. AllTheHype

Matt Mclain made his debut in Dayton today (skipped Daytona), 4-5. double, HR, 5 RBIs.

  27. Indy Red Man

Hopefully next year they’ll have Barrero at SS and Senzel or somebody with some wheels in CF. India will have a year under his belt and run a little more aggressively. Who knows with Nick in RF? AA/Shogo on the bench. They’ll have maybe C- team speed atleast?

  28. beelicker

Need to put the Toussaint Twist on this pitcher

  29. Bet on Red

OK, so we did burn 30 odd pitches out of him in that inning making his outing no more than 6. But we need to score. Moose not looking like what he was before he was sat down.

    • Alan Horn

I don’t have much more confidence in Moose’s hitting than Suarez. The necessity of playing those 2 is killing us. I am also losing confidence in Naquin. He is fading pretty fast with the bat.

      • Bet on Red

I am already off Naquin. We should have sent him out at the deadline. He still has options. Needs to be considered for getting senzel back up here.

  30. JEFF MORRIS

Moose not seeing the ball well….wonder how long it will take him to get back, we might be out of the race by then?

    • Mark Moore

Perhaps the 2 days off after being kinda hot had some impact?

  31. Mark Moore

Gonna get overturned here. May be time to Clete after all.

  32. Indy Red Man

Moostrandus. Everyone wanted him back so badly. Thats 7 stranded in 3 at-bats.

He was safe. I’m out. This team? Every adjective time you feel good about this team they will prove you wrong.

Can we buyout Miley? He’s been putting a million people on for a long while now, but wiggling out. No wiggling today

    • Alan Horn

Now we have Suarez and Moose as lineup killers along with Naquin.

  33. VaRedsFan

I guess sitting Moose for 3 days cooled him off

    • Alan Horn

He was cool before he was injured.

  34. Indy Red Man

Moostrandus $18 mil next year and then $20 mil for a 35 yr old turtle. Completely average career .750 ops. Great signing.

    • AllTheHype

2019 off season; Moose and Akiyama bad signings, Miley and Castellanos great signings. 50/50 is typical return on free agency. Can’t fault the FO for spending money, but Moose did seem like an overpay at the time.

      • Alan Horn

Strop was also a bad signing that off season.

      • Bet on Red

if i remember correctly Strop was a minor league signing so there is never much cost lost in those

  35. Bet on Red

Miley obviously done. THIS is the situation that Amir and HH needed to be put in. Hoffman already used Monday so you can not be sure that he is fully recharged for a longer run. Bells mistakes yesterday spilling into today.

  36. dhmorgan

There were times this season that I believed the Reds could/would come back after 5-0 in three innings.
I no longer have that confidence.
We lived in Missouri for 13 years: they will now have to SHOW ME that they can mount a comeback.

  37. RedAlert

How long they gonna leave Senzek and Barreros at AAA

RIDICULOUS – ZERO SENSE OF URGENCY AS ALWAYS

      • RedAlert

        Better find some urgency !’nn

Brewers up 7-0 / bottom first . Cubs are an embarrassment

    • Alan Horn

Add Lopez and Schrock to the list. Bring someone up who is in the future and can get the bat on the ball. Our playoff hopes are fading fast. You can’t play folks for what they did in past years. It is like an automobile, you have to know when to replace it.

  38. Mark A Verticchio

I was just about to say the same thing 0 sense of urgency.

  39. RedAlert

And Geno with another K – lol

Keep him in that lineup every single day Bell !!!! Utter farce of a manager

    • Scotly50

This absolutely baffles me. How can Bell just keep putting him in the field game after game?

      • BatsLeftThrowsRight

The guy should look into seeing an eye doctor, there can be no other explanation for such futility day after day.

      • Alan Horn

It baffles everyone but Red’s management. It may not be Bell. It could be ordered from higher up. Whomever is putting him in the lineup is incompetent.

    • bug

And all the brilliant Sadak could talk about was how much fire Suarez showed last night after his two walks! Have we been reduced to that? The most excitement Geno gets is when he walks, and Sadak thinks that’s great?? Wonder how excited he might get if Suarez actually got a base hit with a man in scoring position??? I’d say Sadak wouldn’t ne able to contain himself.

      • bug

Well, imagine that. Suarez actually did get a hit with a man on base,..and he got an RBI. Pigs do fly after all. Way to go, Geno.

  40. Joe P.

On today’s Jeff Ellis’ podcast, the guy that follows the Braves said the Braves can hit guys who don’t have high velocity. He was happy to be facing Gray and Miley as opposed to Castillo.

  41. Dennis Westrick

Where has the offense gone? 2 runs last night! No runs against the Braves version of Cy Young so far tonight!

    • RedsMonk65

Yes, I’m more concerned about that than anything else right now.

    • Maloney63

Shades of the playoffs last year! Why can’t we hit this team? Really strange.

  42. BatsLeftThrowsRight

TinkerBell had his team time primed, ready and ramped up for this important seven game road swing. Saving Castellini money on a hotel bill, his top priority. No urgency from a team with no fire. It’s hard to watch this predictable cratering unfold. Wonder who’s turn it is to pitch in the bullpen tonight.

  43. Mark A Verticchio

At least they won’t lose any ground to the Padres, Brewers winning again, the division is gone. The Brewers next 4 = Cubs and Pirates.

  44. Mark A Verticchio

This team needs to stay out of Atlanta.

  45. Old-school

Reds faced bad Indians pitcher and 2 mediocre pitchers and looking 0-3

They get a lefty tomorrow and Zach Wheeler friday

  46. Mark A Verticchio

No team with a manger like Bell, who fails to see the sense of urgency your team is in, can make a pennant run

    • Tom Mitsoff

How do you feel he is failing to sense the urgency?

      • Jon

For one, continuing to play Suarez every single game when it’s clear he’s lost. Put Farmer or Moustakas at third and bring up Barrero for SS! He’s done nothing but hit in AAA for the last month-plus.

Then look at last night. In a tie game, Bell uses arguably his two worst relievers (in a nine-man bullpen) to give up the lead. How many chances does Garrett get? It’s a repeat of JJ Hoover all over again.

      • Bet on Red

anything that involves a roster move is automatically not on Bell. Those are on Krall.

      • Tom Mitsoff

Jon, I understand that viewpoint, but in India you have a guy who hasn’t had a game off in forever, and has been in a bit of a slump. He needs an off-day every once in awhile.

I do agree with you on the continued reliance on Suarez. I don’t have the answer for that because he should be a platoon option against lefties, but his lefty splits are worse than his right splits. I frankly don’t know where he is best used other than off the bench, but Bell and the Reds clearly are hoping he will somehow regain his pre-shoulder-injury form.

      • Melvin

Moose is better than Suarez, much better. If you really want to put your best team on the field you bring up Barrero to play SS and Farmer to 3B. You either get down to 13 pitchers or you cut Akiyama. Only problem with that is it would be a pretty expensive bench especially if Akiyama stays. Still tough, if you really want to get down to it. That’s the best thing to do in my view. IF you REALLY want to do your best to WIN.

  47. Old-school

Hard to hit when your 3b is 0-13 with 6 K.

His 2nd half is as bad as his first half

  48. Bet on Red

BUT BUT BUT….. Not done yet,

(side note) lets hope this sparks something

  49. RedsMonk65

There it is! Bout time. Votto delivers 2-run shot. Now I feel a LITTLE bit better. Keep clawin’ Reds!

  50. dhmorgan

Nothing cheap about that home run.

  51. Bet on Red

Now moose powers one off of a glove

    • beelicker

37 YO reliever probably throws screwball, knuckle curve and split finger

    • Bet on Red

looks like he is trying to overpower people with the 91 MPH heater

  52. RedsMonk65

We got a rally goin! Don’t let us down Geno — PUH-LEEZE!

    • RedsMonk65

Well, at least he made contact. Barnhart needs a hit here. India on deck to hit for Miley, at least for now.

  53. Old-school

Geno is due for his once a week dinger

  54. Bet on Red

Down three and Bell turns to Cessa? This is a We are coming back move. Reds dugout evidently taking the win at any cost move here.

  55. MCT

Two baserunners with no outs and nothing to show for it. The division will be won by Milwaukee. Even if the Reds pull out a miracle and make it to the WC, they will be certainly outmatched. I’m looking forward to next year, though.

    • Indy Red Man

1 game format though? Anything could happen. I think even making the WC game and losing it would be great experience for the young guys.

      • MCT

I suppose you’re right. Either way, a WC appearance is better than what the Reds have achieved in the last 7 years (I don’t personally count the recent 60-game season).

I just hope the Reds don’t turn into one-and-dones like the Bengals were for so many years under Lewis. Some people will say it’s better than not going to the playoffs at all, but at what point are we as fans allowed to be fed up with only having the small successes because we crave to go all the way? I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that.

    • Tom Mitsoff

I, on the other hand, refuse to give up — both tonight and postseason hopes. This is the best Reds team in almost a decade, and they are absolutely not going to win every game. The Reds also refuse to give up, and I love that quality.

      • Melvin

Getting to the playoffs is better than not. I like having a chance at least and being the underdog. The 1990 team wasn’t the best on paper but we all know what happened. I’d much rather win the division though as I’m sure everyone else would too.

  56. Mark A Verticchio

If any one thinks Bell manages with a sense of urgency they are not watching. Bringing in HH last night was a great example and his constant playing of Suarez is the biggest example of all and their are many more. I wonder if his treatment of Suarez has hurt the moral of this team, surely they have to see what is obvious to all.

    • Indy Red Man

His batting average on breaking balls away has to be under .100. I’d just play Moose almost every day unless you have a guy that is really fastball heavy.

Senzel or Barrero? Farmer is coming back to Earth. I’d rather have Barrero personally although we could use Senzel too.

  57. Old-school

Reds cant score on the road and cant hit lefties

Throw in year long futility from suarez and garrett and Reds cant take that next step to a playoff team

    Too bad.

    • MBS

Suarez has been very disappointing, but the reason we miss the playoffs is the pitching.

    • Indy Red Man

30-26 on the road and the pen blew probably 5 of those atleast. Idk? I agree with you that this team is not constructed to play in bigger parks. They can’t reach the fences as easily and they have no speed. You can hit the ball out in Wrigley or Milw so it makes sense our record is good there.

Votto HOF baby. I had no idea he had this much left

      • Indy Red Man

2 run lead in SD in the 9th = Lost

Up 6-1 at KC after 7 = Lost

1 strike away (0-2) in Shea = Lost

        There has to be more?

  58. Old-school

Reds have 3 hitters with OPS over .940
    Hitting 2-4

  59. Joe P.

Chris Martin looks like Logan Ondrusek.

  60. JEFF MORRIS

I don’t know what is going on? Reds taking ALOT of called strikes tonight! Either they are not seeing the ball well, or their head is not in the game tonight, or something??

    • Joe P.

India’s at bat was stunning. Didn’t swing once. If I’m Bell, I asking him (sarcastically) why he didn’t just leave his bat in the dugout.

  61. Bet on Red

Votto is Hotto indeed right now. If the reds score, still playing comeback baseball, if not… I expect we will see the white flag bullpen

  62. RedsMonk65

At least Joey’ hitting tonight. Moose up with 2 on — but 2 outs already and LHP coming in. Not ideal …

  63. Melvin

No matter what happens the rest of this year it is a PLEASURE to watch Votto become one of the best players again. I suggest we remember it and take it in.

      • RedsMonk65

Now 5 hits away, I believe from the 2,000 career mark.

  64. JEFF MORRIS

Except for Votto, Reds not seeing the ball well tonight. Too many strikeouts tonight, Too many taking strikes! Too many swinging strikes!

  65. Indy Red Man

Moosestradus. Thats 7 stranded plus a doubleplay with 2 on. I don’t know how they score that. Not that I’m campaigning for Geno. He’s hopeless

  66. Mark A Verticchio

This is why Bell is a horrible manager, he should have pinch hit Aquino earlier and saved his only infielder for a possible pinch hitting situation later. He never looks ahead, he has no feel for the game, worst manger in baseball.

    • vared

Well, yeah, but he’s SO good at managing the bullpen.

  67. docproc

    Votto has done his part.
    Moose has not.
    The end.

    • Melvin

I know not all will agree with me but Moose is an example of why you don’t sit a “hot” hitter or at least semi hot. He had a really good game with three doubles and then walked twice the next game. After sitting out three games he looks out of sink again. We’re in a pennant race. Maybe it was necessary because his heel was hurting. If it was just being cautious then maybe too even overly cautious. What good is it to have him healthy if he’s not going to perform anyway. I know there are no guarantees either way. That’s just my opinion.

      • Indy Red Man

Pittsburgh Pirates! Moose was hitting at AAA then he faced the Pirates which is more AAA and now he’s facing pitchers w/some talent

But yeah….I wouldn’t sit him for Geno very often

      • Melvin

Well this is a serous question because I really don’t know the answer. How has Suarez hit the Pirates this year? Hitting is hitting no matter who you’re facing.

  68. Bet on Red

I still right now have Wilson in the good reliever category. Down by three with an offense that does not want to seem to put it together, it is a risky play by Bell to try to keep the lead where it is. I like it, but it backfires if the offense doesnt come through

    • Indy Red Man

Trying to win a game. People say he has no sense of urgency. He’s still got Lorenzen & Givens if we get the lead tomorrow, but the starter better go 6

    • Bet on Red

Yea i suppose. We just arent producing on the offense side

    • RedAlert

I’ll take Wilson over Garrett all day long …..

Dude ought to be ahead of him in pecking order .

  69. RedsMonk65

Geno comes through with RBI double!

  70. Bet on Red

Suarez on the other hand, gets a run in

  71. Indy Red Man

That ball is gone in Philly. We can play our regular game in Philly, but this park is huge. Geno can’t hit much, but if you give him a heater middle-in for some stupid reason then he might hurt you.

Lets tie this thing up or get the lead!

  72. dhmorgan

That hit by Naquin was beautiful to watch in slow motion.

  73. Bet on Red

so this is a hard no for Farmer in lead off position anymore

  74. Indy Red Man

Farmer 0-5. I think the heater is over. 31 yr olds don’t suddenly turn into ARod

    • Indy Red Man

I’d call up Barrero, Senzel, and Tony S.

DFanywhere but here : HH, AG, and Shogo

      • RedAlert

That makes too much common sense for the Reds front office to do …..
It’s too complicated for them .
Meanwhile, games dwindle away and they got pieces at AAA that might help .
        Inexcusable !

  75. RedAlert

Farmer coming back to earth …fast

    • Joe P.

He’s getting himself out by swinging at bad pitches. He jammed himself twice into popups. And another time he grounded out on the first pitch which was low.

  76. Joe P.

The Reds inability to move a baserunner from 2nd to 3rd with nobody out is maddening. Over and over again. This game could easily be tied if they just worked to move runners up.

    • RedAlert

Gotta be worst in league with RISP less than 2 outs – THEY ARE PITIFUL !!!!

  77. Indy Red Man

Ok. Their closer is shaky and you’ve fought back from 5-3 so lets put HH in and make the 3 hours of effort null and void

    • Bet on Red

and then HH comes in and does that.

  78. Bet on Red

Actually like HH here, not wanting to burn Mike or Givens in a game that is effectivly over after a failed rally. Chance for HH to prove himself with Antone lurking

  79. Indy Red Man

Lets go!!! Will Smith actually has been pretty good. 18 of last 21 appearances he put up a zero. Just blew a game vs the Nats though.

This could be big if we could tie it up

  80. Indy Red Man

Get 1 man on and AA will bat 4th for Naquin

  81. Indy Red Man

SD got beat atleast, but now Philly/Atlanta will be in the wildcard mix too. Can’t get swept tomorrow

    • RedsMonk65

      Joey : I will carry y’all

      New ballgame

  82. dhmorgan

For crying out loud! We have a new game.

  83. Bet on Red

    BUT BUT BUT TIE GAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  84. Melvin

Are you kidding me?!!! He’s going to be MVP if he keeps this up. Not even close!

    • Melvin

I guess they better not hit Casy anymore. hahaha Automatic two runs. 🙂

  85. Rex

this Votto guy is pretty good

    extend him to his 50’s

  86. Indy Red Man

Phil Mickelson with the tee shot!!! Lets Go!!!

    Lorenzen time!!!

  87. Roger garrett

No issue with resting players such as India or anybody cause they need it but timing is everything.Reds had 2 games back to back against the Bucs where they scored 11 runs and India,Farmer and Moose played all those games.Braves with lefty starters and 2 lefties in the pen are a bad matchup for us and when you set first Wink and Moose last night and rest India tonight you are not putting your best lineup on the field.Reds needed their best against the Braves and well it’s not like we don’t know that we struggle against lefties. You get what you ask for and well could have Senzel or Lopez or both helped

    • beelicker

Winker .172 vs LHP Moose .111

Toussaint starter tonight was a total junkerballer and rookies like India usually struggle against those … vets too, like we just saw

  88. Indy Red Man

Naquin on 2nd to start the 10th. Sounds good to me. Just have to get there!

  89. Bet on Red

Must get this done quick. Assume Mikey can get through this pretty quickly…. maybe one more now the pitcher’s spot has been moved. Only have Givins after that. Coin flip on Doolittle

  90. MBS

Lorenzen needs to work out more. Those arms are only slightly larger than my thighs.

  91. Indy Red Man

13 hrs in 17 games and 32 rbis since July 19th. Omg….thats insane!!!

  92. Bet on Red

Some Cleters are going to regret it in the morning

  93. RedAlert

Never seen a freaking bullpen where dudes can’t throw strikes !!!! Sickening over and over and over !!!!

    • Tom Mitsoff

Believe it or not, St. Louis’ bullpen walks more people.

      • bug

Both of you are correct. And that’s why St. Louis is not worth a dime this year either. It’s pitiful that the Reds’ pitchers just flat out can not throw strikes.

  94. VaRedsFan

Mikey is overthrowing. Need a DP

  95. Scotly50

Holy Cow. What a bullpen the Reds have.

  96. Bet on Red

We should be in extra innings right now

    • Tom Mitsoff

REALLY glad Reds fans didn’t have to deal with that if a hit had followed.

  97. Indy Red Man

Strike 4. Grab some bench. Now lets get the 6th run in and go from there!!

  98. Indy Red Man

Geno? omg? 91 down the middle fouls it off. Then takes a fastball away 1-2. Then swings at a ball outside when he took a strike. I give up

    • Bet on Red

No, he should have been told to bunt there…

      • Indy Red Man

Totally agree, but he wouldn’t know how. Don’t know how old you are, but Bench used to bunt for hits atleast once a month. Situational hitting. He should’ve been looking away and he took a 1-1 fastball that got plenty of the plate away.

      • Bet on Red

I dont care if he made contact, just get him there trying to do something productive

      • Melvin

I forgot about Bench bunting. He sure did didn’t he?

    • Joe P.

How a guy who strikes out as much as Suarez does takes a 1-1 pitch for a strike is mind boggling. He needs to use all 3 strikes swinging the bat to have a chance to make any contact at all.

      • bug

You got that right. He needs 15 swings in order to make contact once.

  99. VaRedsFan

You have to IBB Freeman leading off here right?

  100. Bet on Red

Bad luck for Aquino there, Was scalded there, just right at someone. Lorenzen back out or Givins? even though we didnt run for him we can still keep him on the mound right?

    • Indy Red Man

Swanson snowconed it. That hurt. Albies on 2nd too? We’re in trouble

  101. Melvin

Come on now. Let’s hold em and get back to the top.

  102. Melvin

Didn’t he step off or did I miss it?

    • VaRedsFan

Broke his motion before the step off

    • Bet on Red

Tucker called time by himself without getting it from the ump. Givins seeing a hand motions from Barnhart stepped off getting the Balk

    • Melvin

Yeah. Breaking his motion is what would have been a balk. It’s always okay to step off if the wind up hasn’t started.

  103. Bet on Red

NO, there should not be time calls there.

  104. Melvin

The ump can’t do that. He was in his delivery.

    • Joe P.

Umpire looks tired. Must be past his bedtime.

  105. Indy Red Man

We better get 2 or more. Sims or Doolittle

    • Bet on Red

or givens again if he doesnt come up to bat

  106. Indy Red Man

Fun game win or lose, but I have low criteria for the Reds. Just keep my interest to football)))

  107. Melvin

Yes. Our surprise player of the year comes through again.

  108. RedsMonk65

Farmer! Reds take 11th inning lead.

  109. VaRedsFan

    Farmer says….I’m not done yet.

    • Arthur

Compare the ABs of Suarez and Farmer. Did the results surprise anyone??

Suarez hasn’t made a productive out since 2018. Farmer went the other way and put the ball into RF to drive in the run.

Those two outcomes illustrate the difference between those two players.

  110. JEFF MORRIS

Now come on Bell! Bring Givens back in the bottom of the 11th to save this thing, don’t take a chance. He can pitch one more inning. Do not fool around, do not bring in Doolittle, and do not bring in Garrett.

    • bug

Had you been the manager, we would have won this game. You were right. Bell was wrong,..for the 20th time, according to my estimates. I would bet Givens would have shut them down for a second inning. Course there’s no way to be sure, after Bell pulled his regular bonehead move and took him out. Only thing you can be sure of now is that we LOST,..and Bell made the call.

  111. Indy Red Man

Its amazing to me that Wink is leading mlb in extra basehits because he’s not even driving it the other way like he can. If Wink at 85% can lead mlb in extra basehits then look out!

    • Indy Red Man

Thats not right? Maybe the NL because Ohtani is way ahead? I thought I heard that tonite?

  112. Bet on Red

Farmer went from a very bad day to a hero real quick

  113. Bet on Red

If it was me. Get Givins out there for another inning burn him for tomorrow. Sims is still in the Bullpen.

  114. Brian Rutherford

Just checking in to see how many of the people jumping off the bandwagon so quickly are going to just as quickly jump on. I just don’t know what this team and it’s manager have to do to earn some faith from the fans. I thought we were past the “Tinkerbell” type comments with the team in a pennant race and playing well. Farmer has the 4th best ave in all of MLB since the break, but get him out of here…he’s done.

Geez. I love the fight in these guys. They never quit. Win or lose they have my thanks for a fun summer.

    • Bet on Red

true true…. many cleters tonight missing a good one

  115. VaRedsFan

He hung 1 slider, but got away with it

  116. Indy Red Man

Its not just Geno. I’ve never had mlb package before so I was watching games nonstop April-May and nobody bunts in extra innings or tries to advance the runner.
I mean nobody!! Maybe 20% of the time if a weak hitter was up and thats about it.

Kind of sad the game has gone that way

    • VaRedsFan

You definitely should as the home team, if visitors don’t score. It’s probably that today’s players don’t have the skill….which is ridiculous.

  117. Arthur

Givens threw 13 pitches tonight. That’s it. But, according to the Eleventh Commandment (Thou shalt never allow a relief pitcher throw more than 1 inning lest his arm be smitten from his body) he had to come out of the game.

It’s hard to get upset any more by this – it’s the same dumb decisions over and over again. Night after night.

    • Indy Red Man

I looked up game logs. Givens is a 1 inning guy. If Bell is crazy then so is everyone else thats ever managed Givens.

      • Brian Rutherford

Be careful, don’t let facts get in the way of the narrative that DB isn’t very smart.

      • J

If nobody ever uses him for 2 innings, how does anyone know he can’t pitch two innings?

      • Arthur

How’d that “only 1 inning for Givens” thing work out for us tonight???

Tell me again that a professional baseball pitcher is incapable of throwing more than 13 pitches in a game.

      • bug

        >>>How’d that “only 1 inning for Givens” thing work out for us tonight???

I heard that! Yep. If he had thrown 14 pitches his arm would have fallen off. No doubt about it.

    • RedAlert

Here we go again THROW STRIKES !!!

  118. Bet on Red

ok, the walk creates a force at any base…. should get him here. Must get him on the Pitchers spot or no later.

  119. Indy Red Man

Just walk him rather then give him a cookie. Nobody pinch hitter on deck

    • Indy Red Man

Just hit send when he grooved it. Sims sucks

High fastballs behind in the count are not going to play in gabp. He sucks

  120. RED THUNDER

Pitchers spot next walk him! never mind

  121. kevinz

    Killer man.
    Walks will always Haunt.

    • west larry

Thatc was a tough loss , but I liked the way they came from 5 down to take the lead. They looked much better today, let’s take four straight.

    • Indy Red Man

2 adjective games now….down to the last maternal adjective strike

  122. RedsMonk65

    Fudge.

Almost a great comeback by the Reds. That stinks.

Albies is my new least favorite Brave.

    • RedsMonk65

Great effort, though, to come back from 5-0 to take a 6-5 lead in extra innings (mostly due to Votto and Farmer). Bullpen did its job up until that last pitch. So close.

  123. Joe P.

    Hahahahahahaha.

He walked Pederson to get to Albies. It’s San Diego all over again.

  124. J

At least Givens might be available to pitch an inning tomorrow. That’s the most important thing.

    • RedAlert

Bell is unbelievably lost !!!! How many times does this have to happen !!! He has cost this team double digit losses with his Idiotic bullpen mandates !!! Dude is on another planet .

  125. Brian Rutherford

Great comeback, great effort. Go get em tomorrow.

    • beelicker

Another LHP … I checked Casty vs lefties and even he ‘only’ splits .293/.337/.522

  126. Bet on Red

heartbreaker. had a chance to change the narrative of the road trip. Heck of a fight though.

  127. B-town fan

Isn’t that nice, the bullpen blows another!

  128. BUCK

ANOTHER BELL BLUNDER! WHY NOT a lefty brought in to face Albies?
I wonder if Votto or another member of the team feels the same way?

      • J

But if they fire him they might end up with a manager who lets relief pitchers go more than one inning, and then everyone’s arm will fall off.

    • Indy Red Man

Albies .943 vs lefties, but dont let me stop a good vent)))

    • RojoB

Who they got? Doolittle? Garrett? Cessa just threw a bunch of pitches

this is one game that was just a loss. Not so much on Bell. But there are many other losses I lay at his feet.

AND, this is why we pull our hair out when they lose winnable games–winning those instead of giving them away would insulate against days like this when Miley, for instance, has a clinker.

      • Indy Red Man

They do have a point about the 1 innning thing that Bell seems to live by.
I looked it up last week. Cessa has 8 appearances of 2 inning or more with a 1.04 era with the Yankees this year. If he goes 2 tonite then problem solved. Givens gets the save

  129. Indy Red Man

Geno, Castillo, AG, and Sims are the 4 biggest disappointments to me this season. Bell too. I know he’s had a tough hand to play. Like tonight….he did a good job. One strike away but Sims can’t put Pederson away…..who just entered the game cold.

Thats not on Bell. I guess he could’ve turned Albies around with Doolittle. Jeez

    • Indy Red Man

I will say Bell never comes out when the game is on the line. I complain about it 5 times a week. Come out there and tell Sims to nibble and if he walks then he walks. Nobody decent on deck. Instead he grooves one right down the middle

      • RojoB

that is kind of strange…especially since every player loves the guy (so we are told)

    • J

It’s on Bell that he replaced a better pitcher with a worse pitcher when the better pitcher had thrown 13 pitches. I’ve lost track of how many times he’s given games away in almost exactly this same way.

      • bug

Yes. You are correct. But I guess if Givens had pitched 14 pitches his arm would have fallen off. Must be the case.

    • RojoB

Pitch #1 to Joc could have easily been a strike. Some say it was a strike

  130. JEFF MORRIS

    1. Bell just doesn’t know how to use the bullpen, again he should have had Givens come in to pitch another inning, he was there best chance and best odds. Sims has just been called up, and is getting back to normal. 2. Reds not having a “true” closer is hurting them, in losing these late inning games.

    • Indy Red Man

I’m going to type this again. Givens is a 1 inning guy. Has been for 3 seasons atleast. Sims has to do the job there. Now Bell could’ve used Cessa for 2 and that pushes everyone else back, but Givens just goes 100% or something. Has to be a reason nobody every pushes him past 1 inning.

      • J

I’m going to type this again: If nobody has used him for more than one inning, how does anyone know he can’t pitch two? This is like saying a guy can’t possibly be a closer because he’s only been a setup guy for the last three years and there must be a good reason for it.

      • Indy Red Man

Some guys are max effort. Idk? 13 to 20-25 pitches is alot for a closer type or high leverage guy. They usually go 1 inning. He’s probably done 1 inning his whole career. We were 1 strike away and dummy couldn’t close the door or even pitch around Albies.

    • bug

Bingo! Bell forgot that twice last week he let the good pitcher (who retired the side in order) pitch two innings. He defaulted back to his one pitcher, one inning philosophy,..even if you lose the game because of it. Like you say,…Givens should have pitched two innings. Same with Lorenzen. Then nail down the win, and give them tomorrow night off. Tinkerbell does not think like that. Wins or losses don’t mean a thing to him. Just overly protecting his relief pitchers is all that matters. That’s why he’s lost so many games like this one this year. I suspect he’s given away maybe 15 or 20 wins by doing this. I’m talking games we had won if he had just pitched the previous pitcher one more inning. But he’s sure protected those arms. They’ll even have more time to rest those arms when we don’t make the post season because of his bonehead decisions. Jmo.

  131. RED THUNDER

Ok reds fans how many of you would have walk Albies with the pitchers spot up next and nobody but pitchers left on the bench to hit? I would have rather had the bases loaded and the pitcher batting instead of that. Maybe I’m the only one but I’m taking that chance.

      • Indy Red Man

Vogt who was 3 for 32 or something

      • RED THUNDER

Not according to gameday! Guess I missed it. Who was the bat?

  132. RedAlert

WILL NEVER WIN JACK SQUAT WITH THIS GUY MANAGING

  133. Indy Red Man

I will say Bell failed in that Sims goes 2-0 on one of their best hitters. Go out or send the pitching coach out there and tell him Albies will chase so give him an unintentional intentional walk. They have nothing left on deck. Another fail. Low baseball IQ all the way around. Sims high fastball is not going to work in gabp. They need to move on from him

    • VaRedsFan

Johnson already went out for a visit….if he goes again, they have to pull him

  134. Jeffery Stroupe

Need one closer and 2 setup men. Period. Every game
